Winter Carnival Kidtivities

By Michael Levesque ith the turn of weather, from frigid to balmy, folks feel the urge to get active.

Getting active is what we hope young people will do this Winter Carnival. We have

organized numerous activities to complement that wish. This is the first of two articles on carnival kidtivities.

The Chapleau Curling Club is not only organizing the annual adult bonspiel but also a Little Curlers afternoon on Wednesday, February 12th.

Participation is open to any interested Grades 5 and 6 students.

On Thursday, February 13th, Grades

5 to 8 students from all four schools will compete in the Broomball Tournament. Competition is divided into male and female leagues. Play is from 9:30AM to 3:00PM. For those with a taste for the outdoors, we offer Snowshoe Fun in the municipal ballfield. This is for fun not competition.

Several courses of varying lengths will be outlined to match individual skills and interest. Bring your

own snowshoes if you want. Snowshoes are supplied to those without. We encourage parents to accompany the very young.

Snowshoe Fun is scheduled on Friday, February 14th and Saturday, February 15th, from 3:30PM to 5:00PM. This year's Saturday Children's Activities is slightly different from previous.

This year we have an air-filled bouncy castle, a fish pond, face painting and a

selection of games.

For those ages 2 to 14.

Participation is free with a carnival badge.

What to do with a cardboard box and a roll of duct tape? We pondered this question for hours. Finally, a eureka moment struck our Leisure D i r e c t o r. H e s u ggested a Cardboard Box Race. This race takes place on Sunday, February 16th, at 1:00PM on the Chapleau Public Schools hill. The race is open to all elemen-

tary school students.

The racing box consists of a cardboard box and duct tape, nothing else.

Prizes are given - two for the race and one for the best decorated.

Who knows, perhaps a future Olympian will emerge.

A pamphlet outlining and detailing all youth activities will be distributed to all Chapleau students.

Meals of Hope says Thanks!

n the last two months of 2013 there was just over 2,200 pounds of grocery items delivered to the Local Food bank called Meals of Hope.

Thanks to all in the community who contributed to the Holiday Train (933 lbs) as well as all who gave through the Child Care Centre (448 lbs).

Chapleau Moments by Michael J. Morris

When Philias (Felix) Fortin and his wife Arthamise, along with their growing family arrived in Chapleau on May 16, 1909, there were few places to rent so their first home was in an old Canadian Pacific Railway boxcar by the river near the old pumphouse.

Writing about her family to mark the centennial of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Parish, their daughter Jeanne (Fortin) Morin said the boxcar had no running water or electricity, but they fixed it up and it became a comfortable place to live until they built a house at 25 Grey St, North a bit later.

Mr. Fortin was born on August 17, 1874 in St, Fabien, Quebec, while Arthamise Courturier, who was to become his wife was born on August 9, 1879.

At an early age Arthamise left home to work in a cotton factory in Fall River, Massachusetts, United States. Mrs. Morin wrote that "Mom and Dad were sweethearts before Mom decided to leave home for the States so he was not going to stay in the province of Quebec without her". He went to the United States and they were married on April 28, 1898.

Several children were born there including Emile (the oldest), Amanda (Mrs. Zenon

Philias (Felix) Fortin family lived in old Canadian Pacific Railway boxcar after arriving in Chapleau in 1909 Rioux), Alfred (Tarzan), Eugene (Froggie), Emma (Mrs. J. E. Michaud). They decided to return to Bic, Quebec where two more children Willie and Rosanna (Mrs. Tom Butler) were born.

As Mr. Fortin could not find steady work they decided to move to Ontario and on May 16,1909, he was hired by the Canadian Pacific Railway Bridge and Building department at Chapleau. Later he became a brakeman.

Mrs. Morin also noted that they wanted their children to be fluent in French and English.

After settling in Chapleau the family continued to grow with the births of Edgar (Mick), Romeo (the cook), Jeanne (Mrs, Tony Morin), Bernadette (Mrs. Dome Brillant), Delia (Mrs. Harvey Fortunato), Cecile, (Mrs. R. Martin), Lydia and Zita (Mrs. R. Mackay) During the Great Depression of the 1930s, Mr. Fortin was laid off from the CPR, so he decided to go into the cord wood business and his three eldest sons worked with him in the beginning. They built a sawing machine to cut the wood.

"They managed but it was hard work," Mrs. Morin wrote.

"Mother had her share of courage with a big family," Mrs. Morin noted but the older daughters helped. "Mom was a good cook. She kept us clean, healthy and happy even though we did not have money."

Mrs. Fortin died on November 23, 1953, and her husband on July 17, 1956.

Brillant). least it seemed real big to me). My grandmother, Edythe Hunt did the cooking on it, and it was also used to heat the water for washing and baths on a Saturday night.

Each Fall for several years Mr. Fortin and his sons would bring us a load of cordwood that was piled in the backyard, and was about six feet high -- a great place to play with my friends.

Then they would come with the sawing machine and saw it into stove wood lengths, which my grandfather George Hunt and I, often assisted by my mother, Muriel (Hunt) Morris, into the "back shed" where it was neatly piled before Winter set in.

In 1961, after my first year at university I was working for the Department of Lands and Forests at Missanabaie, and on a Friday it was common to catch a ride on a freight train into Chapleau for the weekend. On one occasion, Eugene (Froggie) Fortin was the

conductor on one, and I approached him and asked if i could get a ride on his train.

He glared at me and sternly said, "Why should I give you a ride on my train?" I turned to leave, but before I could, Mr. Fortin said, "You are Jim Morris' son," and I nodded that I was.

"You can have a ride on my train any time you want," he smiled, and proceeded to tell me a story I have never forgotten.

During the depression, Mr. Fortin had caught a freight out of Chapleau, heading for the Prairies in the hope of finding work helping with the wheat harvest.

My father was a CPR Police Officer at Fort William, now Thunder Bay, and part of his job was to remove transients from freight trains. On that day he saw Mr. Fortin who of course he knew, and gave him a one train head start on the others, by removing them and as Mr. Fortin told me, giving him "my private train west."

Un élan de générosité

Par Kathie Cummings Quelle belle façon de commencer le temps des Fêtes pour le personnel et les élèves de l'école Sacré-Cœur que de faire preuve de générosité et de partage! C'est pourquoi nous avons lancé une campagne de

collecte de denrées non-périssables pour les familles en besoin de la communauté de Chapleau. Le personnel de l'école avait pour but d'encourager la participation des élèves. De leur côté, les élèves avaient pour but de faire relever des

défis au personnel de l'école.

Lorsque nous avons amassé la somme de 100 denrées non périssables, Mme Lucienne Turcotte, partisane des Canadiens de Montréal, a été mise au défi de venir à l'école et de passer la journée habillée en partisane des Bruins de Boston. À la somme de 200 denrées, Mme Mireille Larocque et Mme Lorraine Fortin ont dégusté une «gibelotte» concoctée par Mme Marlyne Fortin qui a fait un joyeux mélange d'ingrédients absurdes. À 300 denrées, Mme Carole Gauthier a accueilli les élèves et les visiteurs de l'école habillée en mémère. De plus, Mme France s'est prêtée au jeu en

laissant quelques é l è v e s l a c o i f f e r.

Finalement, à 400 denrées recueillies, Mme Julie Leduc a porté une jolie robe, s'est coiffée et maquillée digne d'un top modèle. De son côté, Mme Mireille

Lelièvre a courageusement accepté de se faire couper les cheveux par les élèves.

Grâce à la générosité des familles de notre école et au courage de ces enseignantes, nous avons amassé un total de 472

denrées non périssables qui ont été remises à un organisme responsable de la distribution. Pour les membres du personnel qui n'ont pu relever leur défi, ce n'est que partie remise à l'an prochain!

Local Rotary Club donates to Philippines The Rotary Club of Chapleau is part of a global network of volunteers with the power to make a significant humanitarian difference in the world.

Recently, given the huge typhoon disaster in the Philippines, the local club stepped up to assist families in need by donating a Shelter Box. This tent provides emergency shelter to a family of

10 and is fully equipped with lifesaving supplies. The Shelter Box includes such things as fleece blankets, insulating ground sheet, tool box with tools, a cooking stove, pots & pans and an activity box for children. In addition, the donation from the Rotary Club, qualities for a matching grant from the Canadian Government so it doubles the impact of

the original donation.

Rotary is 1.2 million members strong with 32,000 clubs in over 200 countries. The members are dedicated individuals who believe in giving back to communities, both locally and internationally. Rail must be made safer for communities

By Carol Hughes Among the defining issues of the Conservative’s time in government is the constant march toward self-regulation for industry. In the past Canada relied on strong public regulation and oversight to ensure risks are managed to protect the public. The move away from that timetested method has been incremental and deliberate. We have seen it with food inspection, environment monitoring and safeguards, and have been reminded again that this is how our railways operate.

The recent

derailment and tanker fire in Plaster rock, New Brunswick that evacuated homes in that tiny community is the second event involving crude oil in Canada over the last six months. Most will recall the horrific Lac Megantic derailment that decimated the tiny Quebec town this summer is the other. In addition to these, an explosive derailment happened near Gainford, Alberta in October forcing nearly 100 people to leave their homes. Closer to home, people in White River won’t forget the derailment and spill of crude oil in early April.

Clearly something isn’t working with self-regulated railways but the government is refusing to acknowledge this. When New Democrats suggested that the House of Commons transport Committee should hold emergency meetings last summer to look into the tragedy in Lac Megantic, we were told it was too soon. Six months later with tankers still burning in New Brunswick it seems that delay comes with a price.

As Tom Mulcair said, it is only by the grace of God that nobody was injured in Plaster Rock and we cannot

continue hoping to be lucky. Surely the time has come for us to move the odds a little toward the public good and away from the method that isn’t working as well as it should.

In addition to that, it is time to move to a system that informs communities when dangerous goods are being transported through their town. We know that transportation of crude oil by rail and pipeline can be done safely but it needs to be done right. Canada is also falling behind on tanker car technology and the new generation being used in the United

States would help mitigate the effects of derailments, just like upgraded braking systems would help limit these occurrences.

These are things to keep in mind as the discussion to build the Northern Gateway Pipeline heats up this winter. There have already been warnings from the government that failing to build a pipeline will only increase the use of rail to move crude oil.

What they are missing is the opportunity to tell Canadians that tougher safety measures and public oversight could increase the safety of that significantly. This is what the government should be doing, but are so ideologically opposed to because of their belief

that public safety amounts some kind of big brother-type frustration for business.

Let’s not take this as an opportunity to demonize rail. It is an inexpensive, environmentally positive, and safe way to move freight and people. We do need to assert our right to oversee safety and give regulators enough teeth to ensure that rail companies will listen and comply. It will cost rail companies a bit, but when the CEO of CP can haul in almost $50 million in salary and bonuses it is an indication that that there is enough money to ensure that things are done more safely for the country and the communities that they operate in.

The contest is open to all Chapleau residents. Each participant may submit up to three recent photos. The contest theme is local winter scenery or local winter activities. All photos must be taken by participants. Photos must be 8x10 in size.

We have a Toll Free Crisis Line which is staffed 24 hours a day. We can arrange for free transportation to the Centre for women who live in the Algoma/Chapleau area. We also offer support to women who live in the communities of Chapleau, White River, Dubreuilville, and Hornepayne through our Outreach Program.

Our Outreach Worker travels to those communities to meet with women who need emotional support as well as information about their rights and options. If you need to speak with the Outreach Worker when she is in your community, you can call the Centre at any time to set up an appointment. You do not need to be a resident of the Centre in order to use our services. If you need someone to talk to or if you just need someone to listen, call our Toll Free Crisis line at 1-800461-2242 or you can drop in at the Centre. We are here for you.
