he Chicks h o c k e y season is well underway and the girls are playing some fast paced exciting hockey. Currently we have 3 teams registered with the Ontario Women Hockey

Association, Peewee/Atom mix, Bantam, and Midget for a total enrollment of 37 girls. The girls have been very busy playing exhibition games against teams from Blind River, Timmins, and

Thessalon. They have also participated in two tournaments one in North Bay and the other in Sault Ste. Marie over the last few months. They have done remarkably well winning a few and losing a few, always learning and improving their skills. Over the next few months they will be attending a tournament in Sudbury on February 17th. They will also be involved with exhibition games here in Chapleau so keep your ear to the ground for upcoming game times and dates. Plans are also in the works to host our first annual Girls Hockey tournament which is tentatively scheduled for March 9th to 11th. For upcoming CGHA news

about games and tournament listen to your local JJAM FM and read your local Chapleau Express. Chapleau Girls Hockey Association would like to

thank the people of Chapleau for the great donation during their last bottle drive. Also a big thank you to our many sponsors, Ron Martel, Collins

he upcoming Northern Pike fish derby is a p e r f e c t opportunity for a family outing. The derby is an ideal occasion for parents to introduce fishing to youngsters in a perfectly safe environment that is close to home. Aside from having a chance to win large amounts of money, spending quality time with family and friends is worth its' weight in gold. A p l a c e where beans and wieners reheated on

a coleman stove and hot dogs become gourmet food. The anticipation of catching a fish will keep your youngsters on their toes all day. Plan ahead and make this event one that you and your family will remember forever. Entries are available at Pit's Place Bait & Tackle,

Northern Growth Plan an insult to Northern Ontario say Bisson and Mantha

T

immins James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson and AlgomaManitoulin MPP Michael Mantha say the Northern Growth Plan has failed to address the real needs of northern Ontario. The plan calls for the creation of “hubs” to promote

development, but Sudbury and Thunder Bay are the only cities designated as such. “The fact is that there is no money tied to the Northern Growth Plan. We’re not even sure what these two ‘hubs’ in Sudbury and Thunder Bay are

meant to do. What money is being allocated to make these projects work?” said Bisson. “I’m not only concerned for the cities like Timmins and Sault Ste Marie that are left out but I’m also concerned for Sudbury and Thunder Bay

because without a clear vision and funds attached to it these centers are not likely to succeed,” said Bisson. “The Northern Growth Plan is essentially a plan to make a plan that took 7 years to come together and in the end produced noth-

ing,” said AlgomaManitoulin MPP Michael Mantha. “The government is refusing to deal with the real issues, like the infrastructure that is necessary to support the communities both on the physical side and the social infrastructure,” added
