Internet of Things Internet of Things and Digital Revolution: how the future is going to be like and how schools will adapt to this scenario?

“We shape our tools and thereafter our tools shape us”. Marshall McLuhan wrote this sentence in 1964, but it couldn’t be more updated. Therefore, it was what Martha Gabriel, consultant and digital marketing, innovation and education writer, talked about at her lecture Digital Revolution and Internet of Things, at Chapel School on September 10th.

“Os homens criam as ferramentas e, então, as ferramentas recriam os homens”. A frase, de Marshall McLuhan, foi escrita em 1964, mas não poderia ser mais atual. Não à toa, foi tema da fala de Martha Gabriel, consultora e escritora de marketing digital, inovação e educação que palestrou sobre a Revolução Digital e Internet das Coisas na Chapel no dia 10 de setembro.

Beginning with McLuhan’s quote, Martha explained that every technology that we produce shape us, after developed. The difference, now a days, is this transformation speed, today much faster, so fast that makes us change completely every 18 months.

A partir dessa máxima de McLuhan, Martha explicou que toda tecnologia que colocamos no mundo nos transforma depois. A diferença, nos tempos de hoje, é que essa transformação é bem mais rápida, nos fazendo mudar completamente a cada 18 meses.

This acceleration started, according to Martha, partially due to broadband Internet. People

But we can incorporate a lot of those functionalities in our daily life. “The secret is to learn how to deal with technology”, insisted Martha. “Those who know how to use technology are more powerful and achieve best results”, explained, exemplifying her thought with a sportive episode: “Do you know why we lost for Germany from 7 to 1?

Mas, sem dúvida, conseguimos incorporar um sem-número dessas funcionalidades no nosso cotidiano. “O segredo é aprender a lidar com essa tecnologia”, insistiu Martha.

“Quem sabe usar a tecnologia tem mais poder e gera melhores resultados”, explicou, exemplificando a competência com um episódio esportivo: “Sabem por que perdemos de 7x1 para a Alemanha? Porque eles estudaram muito mais o nosso time com base em dados. Hoje, num jogo de futebol, 50% é talento e 50% é aplicação de tecnologia sobre dados”, afirmou.

The World turned out to be more complex due to our connectivity and we had to learn how to collaborate with each other – not because we became philanthropists, but because, otherwise, we wouldn’t survive. “With more complexity people need to be more sophisticated.

Our solution is to use technology. There is no way out of it”.

Esse novo zeitgeist de nosso tempo gerou problemas inéditos, em uma velocidade estonteante. O mundo ficou mais complexo por causa da conectividade e tivemos que aprender a colaborar uns com os outros – não por filantropia, mas por uma questão de sobrevivência.”Quando temos mais complexidade as pessoas têm que ser mais sofisticadas. Nossa saída é usarmos a tecnologia. Não há caminho fora disso”.

For that matter, we have to learn to adapt ourselves to the market, which tend to exclude repetition-functioning jobs and safeguard creative ones. “In 140 years, technology created much more jobs than destroyed it. But even so, it will wipe out a lot of old occupations. This is the moment where we have to invest in education”, advices.

Nesse sentido, teremos que aprender a nos adaptar ao novo mercado de trabalho, que tende a excluir profissões que operam por repetição e salvaguardar os ofícios criativos. “Em 140 anos a tecnologia criou muito mais empregos do que destruiu. Mas mesmo assim ela irá acabar com várias profissões antigas. Esse é o momento em que devemos investir em educação”, aconselha.

Beyond education, Martha explained that shall be successful those who acquire multi and interdisciplinary abilities; who work with collaboration; and, mainly, those who know how to work with vision, resources and technology.

Além da educação, Martha explicou que irá ser bem sucedido aquele que desenvolver habilidades multi e interdisciplinares; quem praticar colaboração; e, principalmente, quem souber trabalhar a visão, recursos e tecnologia.

In the passed centuries, we used to have the first two items from this triad. “Today we have the whole 3, but we are losing our vision, what can be very dangerous. In all the former civilizations, the only ones who survived were the visionaries. And a visionary is a person who observes the young people”. Based on these ideas, Martha exposed what she thinks the future will be like.

Nos séculos passados tínhamos os dois primeiros itens dessa tríade. “Hoje temos os 3, mas estamos perdendo a visão, o que é muito perigoso. Em todas as civilizações antigas, só sobrevivia quem conseguia prever o futuro. E entende o futuro aquele quem observa o jovem”. Com base nisso, Martha expôs as suas previsões do que será o futuro.

Para ela, serão seis os pilares que sustentarão a lógica do futuro:

sustain our future’s logic: • the mobile version of everything and all it offers, like video, search, augmented reality, etc; • big data and data economy • real time services • social collaboration development and crowdsourcing potentialities • sustainability (we will have less affection with material things, stimulating a sharing economy and its four trends, already in usage among manufacturers, which are: cleaner, lighter, smaller and faster products; and • the internet of things: everything will be programed to respond to the users demands

How do you foresee the big corporation’s vigilance with the Internet of Things usage? Will we be able to avoid it?

I think that we have to understand one thing first: privacy is not transparency. Privacy is the capacity that we have to reveal informations in a given context.

I choose what I want to show, and that’s privacy.

With technology is hard to have such a control.

Today I don’t know who is recording me, so, if I say something politically incorrect, I might be doomed.

We have to be much more careful. In my opinion, the greatest instrument to protect ourselves is education. It isn’t tech knowledge, but to know what you can or can’t do in each environment. You have to read the terms of services from all the platforms you use. People today can enter in your house network.

There are mobile chargers that copies all our data.

To be connected at home is one thing, at the airport is another one. So the first thing we got to have, to protect ourselves, is education. The second is public policies and social contracts, meaning that we have to have ethics. You can’t stalk people or intrude in your fellows life. We need to change our culture and acquire consciousness to learn and live with this new bunch of technology in the World.

Como você enxerga a vigilância das grandes corporações com o uso da Internet das Coisas? Há como combatê-la?

Acho que temos que entender que privacidade é diferente de transparência. Privacidade é a capacidade de revelarmos a informação em dado contexto. Eu escolho o que mostrar. Isso é privacidade, com um objetivo em mente. Na tecnologia, é difícil ter esse controle. Hoje não sei se alguem está me filmando, portanto, se eu falar algo politicamente incorreto, estou perdido. Temos que tomar o dobro do cuidado.

Na minha opinião, o maior instrumento para nos protegermos disso é a educação. Não é saber usar a ferramenta, mas saber em qual ambiente você pode fazer determinadas coisas. Temos que ler o contrato de uso de todas as ferramentas que usamos. As pessoas hoje conseguem entrar na rede da sua casa. Existe carregador de celular que parece tomadinha, mas ele copia todos os dados de celulares. Estar conectado em casa, é um cenário, no aeroporto é outro. A primeira arma para nos protegermos disso, então, é a educação.

A segunda tem que ser políticas públicas e contratos sociais, isto é, termos ética. Não é porque você pode, que você vai ver os dados do seu colega. Precisamos mudar essa cultura e adquirir essa consciência para aprendermos a viver no mundo da tecnologia.

People know that they need to pay for physical stuff, like, let’s say, the newspaper, but they don’t thing they need to pay for virtual things. How can we change this logic?

People want to pay for what they see value in it.

Just watch what Apple did with the music market. If you download a music in any website, you might get it with a bad quality. An Apple mp3, now very cheap, comes with great quality and, for that matter, people want to buy it. Today a lot of professionals are afraid about Internet destroying their crafts. Journalists, librarians and teachers are good examples of those professionals. But they will always be needed – although, they do need to know how to reinvent themselves. Content teaching or publishing, as we used to know, is surpassed, and only professionals that know how to work their creativity shall survive.

Among journalism, I think it will prevail those who write conjuncture analyses, and not only informative content.

As pessoas querem pagar por aquilo que acham que tem valor. É só avaliar o que a Apple fez com a musica, por exemplo. Se você baixa uma música é comum ela vir com uma qualidade ruim. Já uma mp3 da Apple, que hoje é barato, vem com uma qualidade boa e, por isso, as pessoas querem comprar. Hoje em dia várias profissões estão com medo da Internet acabar com seus ofícios.

Jornalistas, bibliotecários e professores são exemplos desses profissionais. Mas eles sempre serão necessários – só terão que saber se reinventar. O conteúdismo acabou e sobreviverão aqueles que souberem trabalhar com a criatividade. No caso do jornalismo, acho que prevalecerá aquele que souber fazer ótimas análises de conjunturas, e não só um conteúdo informativo.

You said that gadgets and the Internet are provoking some harm: besides dependency, there are also physical problems. How shall we prevent ourselves?

I think we have to work it in two areas: the first one is health. A lot of doctors are studying it. Because Internet provokes not only a sedentary lifestyle, but also a mental one. Of course users have to be aware about it. To find out if that is hurting themselves, people need to know how to differentiate addiction from habit. Habit usually doesn’t hurt you, but addiction does. One of the things that we need to try and detect on our kids, for example, is if technology is affecting their daily life. And, sometimes, we have to ask for professional help.

Você comentou que dispositivos e a Internet estão causando alguns malefícios: além da dependência, há também os problemas físicos. Qual o modo de prevenção?

Acho que devemos trabalhar isso em duas áreas: a primeira é a da saúde. Muitos médicos têm estudado isso. Porque a Internet não provoca só o sedentarismo fisco, mas também o mental. E claro que os usuários têm que ficar atentos. Para saber se aquilo está lhe fazendo mal, as pessoas têm que saber diferenciar vício de hábito. Hábito normalmente não faz mal, mas vício faz. Uma das coisas que temos que tentar detectar nos filhos, por exemplo, é se a tecnologia está afetando a rotina daquela pessoa de maneira boa ou ruim. E as vezes é o caso sim de pedir ajuda profissional.

How would you tell teachers to adapt technology in their daily teaching?

Teachers have to use both things. Technology has to be an instrument to develop other abilities, offline ones. Real life experience is usually more interesting, and students have to develop interpersonal abilities, creating argumentation, reflection process, critic argument. If a student has more real life experience, he connects things. We have to think about the physical world. And, in this case, the school role is really important because it differentiates and teaches the interaction between the on and off line worlds.

Como você diria para os professores adaptarem a tecnologia no dia a dia do ensino?

Professores têm que usar as duas coisas. A tecnologia tem que ser um instrumento para você desenvolver habilidades junto com as outras habilidades, off line. As experiências que são interessantes usam corpo a corpo, é preciso desenvolver habilidades interpessoais, criando argumentação, processo de reflexão, argumento crítico.

Quanto mais referências um aluno tem, mais ele conecta coisas. Cada vez mais temos que usar o presencial. E nesse caso, o papel da escola é muito importante para ensinar a interação entre o on e o off line.
