Receber 131 artistas e suas maravilhosas obras de arte é uma formidável e exclusiva realização da qual muito nos orgulhamos, e que reafirma nossa Fé na Educação e na arte, parceira essencial no cumprimento de nossa missão. É inspirador constatar que ano após ano, o Chapel Art Show recebe mais destaque no concorrido calendário cultural da cidade de São Paulo, pois mostra que estamos atendendo de forma primorosa ao projeto educativo da Chapel School, que segue sendo o propósito central de realizar a exposição no campus. Opening the doors of Chapel School for the 47th Chapel Art Show is, once again, a great source of joy and satisfaction! We are proud to be receiving 131 artists and their remarkable works of art. This formidable and unique accomplishment reaffirms our Faith in Education and in the arts, an essential partnership in completing our mission.

It is inspiring to note that, year after year, the Chapel Art Show becomes more and more prominent on the cultural calendar of São Paulo, while exquisitely upholding the educational aspect of the event, which remains the central purpose of the exhibit. to support the Escola Social Santo Eugênio, inaugurated in February 2019 by the Oblate Fathers of Mary Immaculate. At this new school, one hundred children from the Americanópolis community are already being educated, benefiting from full-time academic instruction and receiving educational supplies, uniforms, and meals throughout the day – all with art and the Chapel standard of excellence!

O ARTISTA PENSADOR POR ADRIANA REDE,CURADORA Sergio Fingermann é um artista que pensa demais. E repensa, reflete. Ele pensa além da conta. Às vezes sua cabeça, dignamente adornada por óculos vermelhos, parece que vai explodir. É minha visão, claro.

Mas, sim, ele me recorda alguém que está sempre indagando a psique humana.

Possui inúmeras referências; é um dos maiores intelectuais/artistas de sua geração. O que dizer de um artista com formação em arquitetura, que estuda desenho e pintura em Veneza, na juventude, e com grandes mestres no Brasil, como Yolanda Mohalyi e Renina Katz? Teve influência também de ninguém menos que Tarsila do Amaral, que conheceu desde criança e de quem se tornou amigo. Virtuose tanto na pintura figurativa quanto na abstrata, no desenho e na gravura. E ainda escreve, muito.

THE THINKING ARTIST

BY CURATOR, ADRIANA REDE Sergio Fingermann is an artist who thinks way too much. And then rethinks, reflects. If there were a limit, he’d have already crossed it. Sometimes his head, adorned by red glasses in a dignified manner, looks about to explode. That is my point of view, of course, but, yes, he seems like someone who is always questioning the human psyche.

He has infinite references and is one of the greatest intellectuals/artists of his generation. What else can be said of an artist who graduated in architecture, who studied drawing and painting in Venice in his youth and later under great masters in Brazil, such as Yolanda Mohalyi and Renina Katz? Fingermann was also influenced by none other than Tarsila do Amaral, whom he met when he was still a child, later becoming her friend. His virtuosity shows in figurative as well as in abstract painting, drawing, and printmaking. And he also writes – a lot.

Falando em referências, sua série Sem título, como as recentes pinturas de 2019, sobre papel ou sobre tela, remetem a uma mistura de Pablo Picasso com a paleta de cores de Georges Braque, criadores do cubismo, no recente século 20. Uma polifonia, como se ouvisse múltiplas vozes e as fosse traduzindo para a tela.

Talvez sejam fragmentos de memórias…

As regards his references, his Untitled series, such as the recent paintings in 2019 (on paper or canvas), evoke a blend of Pablo Picasso with the Georges Braque’s color palette, both creators of cubism, in the recent 20th century.

Fingermann’s works are a polyphony, as if he were listening to multiple voices and translating them to the canvas. Maybe they are fragments of his memories…

AtravĂŠs dos trabalhos de Fingermann, chegamos a outros lugares. Por vezes locais no futuro; outras, no passado. Parece ter um duplo olhar.

Through Fingermann’s works, we are teleported to different places. Sometimes to the future, sometimes to the past; he seems to have a double gaze.

Óleo sobre tela 2013 230 x 180 cm

O traço do arquiteto está presente nas pinturas Se Noite Fosse Água; muito organizadas e pensadas, parecem querer nos levar a um ponto de fuga. Ou ao infinito, quem sabe ao futuro? Como as de números 39 e 38, esta quase geométrica, mas, mesmo com essa disciplina, uma certa liberdade convém.

Na pintura monumental Se Noite Fosse Água nº 41, tríptico de 2014, com 4,5 metros de largura, parece sacramentar, consagrar, homenagear a arte tradicional. Nessa série, para mim, alguns trabalhos evocam os tons terrosos usados pelos maiores pintores da era do ouro holandesa, no século 17, Johannes Vermeer e Rembrandt.

The architect’s touch is present in the paintings Se Noite Fosse Água [If Night Were Water]. Very well organized and thought out, they seem to lead us to a vanishing point. Or to infinity, who knows, maybe to the future? Like, for example, numbers 39 and 38—the latter, almost geometric. But together with the discipline there is a welcome admixture of freedom.

In the monumental painting Se Noite Fosse Água no 41 [If Night Were Water #41], a 2014 triptych, 4.5 meters wide, the artist seems to consecrate and honor traditional art. In this series, some works evoke the earthy tones of the greatest Dutch painters of the golden age of Dutch painting, in the 17th century: Johannes Vermeer and Rembrandt.

(DA SÉRIE INTERFERÊNCIAS) Pintura sobre interferência fotográfica 2014 56 x 76 cm

Nos trabalhos Sem título da série Interferências, o artista também nos remete ao passado, com suas intervenções em manuscritos anônimos antiquíssimos, raridades dos séculos 18 e 19, encontradas em sebos de Buenos Aires e Paris.

Assim como “interfere” em fotografias ampliadas de gravuras contendo os retratos de autores de diversas publicações antigas. É seu lado escritor, poeta, sobrepondo-se ao artista visual.

In the works Untitled from the Interferências [Interferences] series, the artist also takes us to the past, through his interventions on ancient anonymous manuscripts, including rarities from the 18th and 19th centuries, found in used-book stores in Buenos Aires and Paris. Just as he also intervenes in enlarged photographs of engravings portraying authors of old publications. It is his literary side, the poet, intermingled with the visual artist.

Já com seus, diríamos, “arquétipos” – que, aqui, consideraremos como figuras comuns em nosso imaginário, principalmente presentes nas gravuras, mas não só nelas, como cadeiras, escadas, silhuetas de casas, luas, palcos de teatro, gatos, peixes, além de árvores diversas –, percebemos um sentido de dessacralização da arte. Um intuito de que perca o caráter sagrado ou místico.

In what can be called his “archetypes” – considered here as common figures of our imaginary, present mostly in his engravings, but in other media as well, and which include chairs, stairs, silhouettes of houses, moons, theater stages, cats, fish, in addition to a diversity of trees – we notice a sort of art desecration, as if aiming to lose the sacred or mystical aspect.

Os álbuns de gravuras, minuciosamente trabalhados, como se fossem joias, já no título nos mostram o caminho a ser percorrido. Nominados O Teatro do Mundo, A Fábula e a Verdade e Elogio ao Silêncio, revelam o grande gravador e suas sutilezas.

Aquareladas as imagens, uma a uma, tornam-se peças únicas.

Fingermann carefully crafted albums of engravings, as if they were jewels. Their titles already announce the path to be taken.

Entitled O Teatro do Mundo [The Theater of the World], A Fábula e a Verdade [The Fable and the Truth], and Elogio ao Silêncio [In Praise of Silence], they reveal the great engraver and his subtleties. The individually watercolored images are unique pieces.

The trees in his work deserve special mention; they are stunning!

As árvores em seu trabalho são um capítulo à parte, lindíssimas.

Ele as apresenta sempre de forma forte e doce, como no trecho de uma das primeiras publicações de Clarice Lispector, O Lustre, que Sergio colocou em um de seus inúmeros livros editados: “… Na manhã seguinte uma folha despregou-se de uma árvore alta e durante enormes minutos planou no ar até repousar na terra. Você não compreendia donde vinha a doçura. O chão era negro e coberto de folhas secas, donde então vinha a doçura?…”

He portrays them always strongly and sweetly, as in one of the first publications by Clarice Lispector, O Lustre [The Chandelier], which Sergio has quoted in one of his many published books: “… The next morning, a leaf detached itself from a tall tree, and for many minutes it glided in the air until coming to rest on the ground. You did not understand where that sweetness came from. The ground was black and covered with dry leaves, where did the sweetness come from?…”

Apesar de seu lado poeta, Sergio não acredita em epifanias artísticas, em momentos de iluminação em torno de algo a ser retratado. Acredita, sim, na prática, na labuta, no planejamento do trabalho e no estudo sobre o tema.

Despite his poet’s side, Sergio does not believe in artistic epiphanies, in moments of enlightenment around anything to be portrayed. He believes in practice, hard work, planning, and studying the subject.

No intervalo de tempo entre o fazer artístico, ele pensa.

In the time between works, he thinks a lot.

O resultado de tanto pensar é que tanto o conjunto de sua obra como cada uma, individualmente, nos fazem conversar com nós mesmos.

The result of thinking so much is that the whole of his work and each one of them individually make us look inside ourselves.

Os trabalhos de Fingermann nos provocam, diríamos, uma sinestesia, uma fusão de sentimentos, eles nos põem os sentidos aguçados para tentar entender o mundo. E sua beleza.

Fingermann’s works provoke in us synesthesia, a fusion of feelings; they sharpen and spur our senses to try to understand the world. Along with its beauty.
