A Message from our Head of School

Connie Dantagnan Dear alumnae, parents and friends of Chapelle, It is an honor and a privilege that I will serve as the Head of School at Archbishop Chapelle High School.

Words cannot express how excited I am that God has called me to lead my alma mater. It truly has been my dream to become Head of School since my term as Student Council President in 1987-88. Chapelle is truly a family! It is my home away from home and I invite all stakeholders to come back and be a part of the family once again. Our alumnae, parents of alumnae, current parents and friends of Chapelle are what make this school a special place. We all believe in our motto, Deus Providebit…. God Will Provide. It is during this time that I believe this more now than ever. God continues to bless Chapelle in so many ways and you will see this throughout our Provider.

At present, our enrollment is the highest it has been in the past 5 years and that is due to so many people working countless amounts of hours to make Chapelle spiritually, academically and socially excel. Mrs. Susan Panzavecchia ’90 has assembled a strong academic team and tasked Mrs. Danielle Rohli and Ms. Shannon Spafford to evaluate the academic program and to increase the number of Advanced Placement offerings. I am proud to say that the 2019-2020 school year produced some of the highest AP scores in the history of Chapelle.

I would also like to thank all of teachers who have worked diligently to adjust to virtual learning. Our students were engaged in full learning when the pandemic began. This engagement was certainly challenging at times, but our teachers continued to motivate their students to grow academically. We were even able to offer club meetings over zoom so our students could have social interaction with their classmates.

While the 2020-2021 school year will certainly look different in many ways, my prayer is for each one of you who receive this correspondence. COVID 19 has affected all in different capacities but my pledge is to keep things as “normal” as possible.

Now more than ever we need the support and prayers of all!

A Message from our President/Principal

Leila Benoit Dear Chapelle Family, As I write this letter it is the end of June 2020 and with mixed emotions, I’m packing up my office getting ready to move on to the next phase of the journey where God is calling me. When I announced that I was leaving back in January I could have never imagined what the next six months would hold. I don’t think I would have believed you if you would have told me back then that an unprecedented pandemic was about to sweep over the world like wildfire and that we would be sending our teachers and students home for remote teaching and learning for the entire 4th quarter, and that our daily lives would be drastically altered. These past few months have held tremendous challenges for our school community, and I know each of us has been affected in some way by these circumstances.

Despite this time of chaos, disappointment, and countless unknowns, I have been amazed at the abundant blessings and have constantly been reminded of Chapelle’s motto – Deus Providebit…God will provide. Through an abundance of God’s grace and many prayers, our teachers didn’t skip a beat in making the transition to a virtual platform in a matter of 48 hours and did so without complaint, our students exhibited admirable strength and resiliency as they were separated from their second home, and our parents were incredibly supportive as we all came to terms with this temporary new normal. Although we all have many questions about what the future holds, there is one thing that is certain – God will continue to provide for each of us in ways that we likely never thought possible. It’s my prayer that we all can have the eyes to see the gifts and blessings in front of us amid the uncertainty.

I would like to thank each of you for your unwavering support throughout these past several years, particularly in these last few months. In the words of our school prayer, you have made “Chapelle not only a school, but also a home” for me and I could not be more grateful. As I move on to further pursue my first career in the counseling/social work field, I am confident that Chapelle will be in great hands. I could not think of anyone more fitting to step in as Chapelle’s next leader than Connie Dantagnan. Her dynamic faith, her love for everything Chapelle, and her vast experience working in many positions at the school make her the perfect woman to lead Chapelle into the future. I can’t wait to hear about all the great things to come!

2020 Deus Providebit Winners Ray & Judy Golemi Spadafora ‘66 The 2020 Deus Providebit Award is presented to a couple, Ray and Judy Golemi Spadafora ’66, for the continuous outpouring of outstanding service, generosity and love towards everyone in the Chapelle community.

After graduating from St. Christopher grammar school in 1962, Judy became a member of the charter class of Archbishop Chapelle High School. It was the duty and privilege of the charter class to help in the formation of so many aspects of what is Chapelle today. It included choosing the school colors, original skirt, mascot, writing the alma mater and the naming of many things relating to Chapelle. That is where her love and nurturing of Chapelle began and continues today.

Judy holds several college degrees from Southeastern Louisiana University including a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education Home Economics, a Masters in Administration and Supervision and a Masters in Counseling. It was always her plan to return to Chapelle to share her talents and gifts. That dream began with her teaching Home Economics and later as a school counselor on Chapelle’s faculty. Judy was the chair of both departments, junior class sponsor, moderator of student awards and hostess of the school for many years to name a few of her duties. At present she is a member of the alumnae board. Former President/Principal Beth Johnson said that if you ask Judy to do anything, “it will be accomplished far beyond your expectations.” Judy believes that working beyond what is asked of her is important, especially when it comes to Chapelle. Many students and faculty members have touched her life. She hopes she has done the same for them and can continue to do so. She is grateful to have shared her gifts and talents through the years with Chapelle. She was deeply honored to be named Alumna of the Year in 2004 and feels overwhelmed and humbled to have the Valedictorian Award named after her in 2014, the year she retired from Chapelle after 40 years of service.

Ray graduated from Incarnate Word Grammar School, De La Salle High School and Southeastern Louisiana University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.

After graduation he worked for a local public accounting firm before going into private accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), past Treasurer of Archbishop Chapelle Parent’s Club, past President of St. Ann Men’s

Club, past Co-Chairman of St. Ann’s Fair and was a volunteer organist for St. Ann Church for over 30 years.

Ray retired in December, 2017 from HRI Properties as their Chief Financial Officer and continues to do tax work for various clients. He is also a certified recreational and technical cave scuba diver and instructor. He was recently certified to teach scuba diving to the disabled. Ray feels blessed that Judy has been able to fulfill her dream of making a difference at Chapelle and the opportunities it has presented for him to be involved and support such a remarkable school. He will always be grateful for the opportunities that Chapelle presented for him to be involved with his daughters while they attended Chapelle.

God has provided many memories for him that he will always cherish. He is a member of the AICPA, LCPA, NSS-CDS, IANTD and NACD. He is a recipient of the Order of St. Louis Award.

Although they attended different grammar schools, Judy and Ray were taught by some of the same nuns. Ray met Judy the first hour of her freshman year at Southeastern.

Possibly, it was meant to be as he had actually been introduced to her on two seperate occasions before college.

Ray and Judy Spadafora celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2019.

Ray and Judy have two married daughters, Laura and Elizabeth, and three grandchildren – Noah, Maya and Cecily. Both of their daughters attended Archbishop Chapelle High School, one a Hi-Stepper and the other a Chapellette. Both daughters graduated with honors.

Laura ‘88, married to Sami Rahman, is a Partner in Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Decker LLP, a national law firm, and is living in Houston. Elizabeth ‘97, married to Kenneth Kupar, is a Doctor of Chiropractics and co-owner of Superior Healthcare LLC in Metairie. Maya and Cecily regularly attend Chapelle Camps.

Ray and Judy have resided in Kenner for the past 45 years.

They are parishioners at Divine Mercy Church where Judy is a weekly adorer in the adoration chapel. She taught CCD at St. Ann Parish for many years.

To share the Deus Providebit award as a couple, for their commitment and love of Chapelle, is heartwarming. They are proud to be a part of a school that continues to grow and strive for excellence for the betterment of their students, the community and beyond. The alma mater says it all from “we pledge our love to you, to God will provide”. Judy and Ray always feel there is more they can do to enlighten the students of Chapelle, put a smile on their faces and enhance the school for future chipmunks.

2020 Alumna of the Year Katherine “Kay” Quigley Dussouy ‘99 Archbishop Chapelle is proud to announce that the 2020 Alumna of the Year is Katherine “Kay” Quigley Dussouy.

Kay graduated from Archbishop Chapelle High School in 1999. She received a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Louisiana State University in May of 2003. While at LSU, she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She served the chapter as Vice President of Finance from 2002-2003.

After college, Kay started her sales career as a sales trainee with Coca Cola Bottling Company in Harahan, Louisiana. After her time there, she was recruited to join King Pharmaceuticals as a sales representative in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her time with King Pharmaceuticals resulted in several promotions and she earned the 2008 President’s Club award for excellence in sales. In 2010, Pfizer, Inc. acquired King Pharmaceuticals, and Kay has since continued her career goals with Pfizer. At Pfizer, Kay serves as the South Central Region Operations Expert, a South Central Region’s Leadership Lab member, as well as a contributor to the Woman’s Field Network.

Kay’s dream as a young girl was to be in the pharmaceutical industry and in her 16 year career, she has seen her dreams come true. Kay has said, “Helping others thrive with diverse and quality pharmaceuticals inspires me everyday. Having the

ability to leave a positive impression on each customer is something I am very proud of.”

Outside of her career with Pfizer, Kay is an Archbishop Chapelle Alumnae Board Member, and served as Secretary of the board from 2017-2019. Kay has devoted countless hours of service to her Alma Mater, and looks forward to contributing many more.

Kay’s proudest accomplishment is being the mother to her 3 beautiful girls, Kate Whitney (10), Abby Rose (7), and Ruby Ann (3), who are all future Chipmunks. She is equally proud that she has been happily married for 15 years to her high school sweetheart, David Dussouy.

She noted, “I am super excited and extremely humbled to be chosen as Archbishop Chapelle’s 2020 Alumna of the year. My years at Chapelle were some of the most memorable and cherished times in my life. I still think there is more that I can contribute as an Alumna, because my Chapelle family has given so much to me over the years. The things I learned throughout my time at Chapelle have shaped me into the woman I am today.”

Much Anticipated Celebration for the

Class of 2020

The diplomas of the Class of 2020 are signed and sealed with the graduation date of May 19, 2020. This year in the interest of safety, and in accordance with the restrictions in place surrounding gatherings, the Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation ceremony were delayed until July 29, 2020.

Valeditorian Amanda Darda addressed her class in these words, “As a class, we overcame challenges that no class has ever faced before. After walking out of those halls for the last time, we buckled down in our homes for months dedicating ourselves to finding innovative ways to adjust to the new norm. This will be the class of 2020’s legacy, determination and innovation.”

Diplomas were presented to 109 graduates of the Class of 2020. Seven graduates were presented with the Judy Golemi Spadafora Valedictorian Award, Amanda Darda, Bailey Gossett, Brenna Macaluso, Emma Mathes, Lauren Nash, Alyssa Schiaffino, and Abigail Southworth.

During the ceremony, Principal Leila Benoit presented Emerald Awards to students who exhibited superior academic achievement in particular subject areas.

Emerald Gala 2020 On Thursday, March 12, 2020, the Administrators of Archbishop Chapelle and the Emerald Gala Committee made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Emerald Gala which was to be held two days later at Copeland Tower and Suites in Metairie. It was handled in true Chapelle fashion. Planning for the online Gala began within minutes of making the decision. Word spread quickly that online bidding would continue and prizes won would be distributed at Chapelle on Saturday night. Chapelle’s amazing Marketing and Communications Director, Shelly Melton ‘95, and full of life, multitalented Admissions Director, Emily Radcliffe ‘11, went live on Facebook the evening of March 14, 2020, showing off the prizes available for bid and thanking the wonderful sponsors. Overall, the evening was not what was originally planned, but it turned out to be a blessing for Chapelle and a true picture of the resilience of the Chapelle family.

The Gala proved a virtual platform event was not only possible, but a very positive experience for Archbishop Chapelle. It was a model of success for our students and families to follow for the online learning which occurred in the fourth quarter of the school year.

Thank you to all of the Gala committee members who worked tirelessly for the months leading up to March 14, 2020. Finally, thank you to all who tuned in to the virtual Gala and to the more than 250 individuals who participated in the fun to make Emerald Gala 2020 a success!

Through the generosity of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, Inc., Archbishop Chapelle High School was the recipient of a $3,500 Community Partnership Grant for In-School Education Programs in Music. This grant enabled Chapelle to purchase numerous musical instruments and supplies, and helped our band program to develop talented young musicians during the 2019-2020 school year and beyond.

To our wonderful alumnae, parents, grandparents and friends, It is a beautiful time to be part of the Chapelle family. Our student body is filled with wonderful young women who are growing spiritually, academically and socially each day. Two amazing alumnae, Mrs. Connie L. Dantagnan ’88 and Mrs. Susan C. Panzavecchia ’90, are tireless in their efforts as the leaders of the school to continuously improve upon the already wonderful place that so many call home. Despite the obstacles that 2020 has presented, our campus is exceptional, the Academic program is thriving, our faith offerings are plentiful, and the club and extracurricular offerings for our students remain very enriching. Fortunately, the future is also very bright as we continue to grow through the amazing innovative spirit of our Admissions Department.
