Zoe Kennedy is a dedicated interior design student in the CIDA accredited program at Washington State University who will be graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design in the spring of 2023. Zoe was born and raised in Austin, Texas, and enjoys seeing the city grow both culturally and artistically. The Prologue Hotel Adaptive Reuse Design
Design Concept The Prologue Hotel will provide an environment that uses the theory of affect and nostalgia to impose and uncover emotion within its guests. The theory of affect is described as emotions or experienced feelings that are categorized by physiological, social, interpersonal, and internalized manifestations. Affect can be put into action through music, colors, smells, the presence of natural elements, form, shared experiences, and more. Feelings can be an indicator of an individual’s memories or personal bookmarks of experiences. A person can hear an old song and remember a time in their life they associate with that song. The same thing can happen when a person sees a color or smells a pronounced fragrance. One quote shared by Melissa Greg “Affect is what sticks, or what sustains or preserves the connection between ideas, values, and objects.” Meaning that the key factor for a memory is how it made a person feel while they lived and how they feel when looking back on it. Nostalgic experiences form comfort and trust with an individual, but not only that, but feeling of nostalgia is also a memory the individual longs to live through again. Some aspects of nostalgia are ornamentation, having a relationship with nature, and being in an environment that aids relaxation and relief of stress. With what we know about the theory of affect and pairing it with nostalgia, the Prologue Hotel will supply a feeling of trust, comfort, and self-discovery for guests.

Design Intent Manhattan Art By: Hedda Sterne 1958, Oil, Spray Paint on Canvas In the 1950’s while living in New York, Sterne expressed that there was always continuous movement that created lines and curves making it seem like a ballet of reflections and sounds.
Rebar Hall is in lower Manhattan within the Tribeca district with the historical cobblestone streets and quiet nightlife. The inspiration behind the dorm was by Hedda Sterne’s painting, Manhattan which incorporates fluidity of lines and curves with pops of blue and yellow. My idea was to embrace elements in the painting and integrate them throughout the building. Shape, line, and contrast were just a few of the principles/elements of design I chose. The circulation of the floorplan was designed to separate spaces into their areas which allow occupants to be in a more intimate environment. The lobby is enclosed by walls on either side stirring visitors in limited directions to the other main level spaces like the music and lecture area or the dining and lounge areas. The material and color schemes have an industrial style aesthetic that is warm and inviting. Rebar was a focal point in my design and can be seen through the mezzanine, lecture space, and the dividing wall between the lounge and dining. The architecture of the building reflects linear characteristics that tie back to the fluidity of Sterne’s painting as well as colors within the artwork. Natural materials like wood, concrete, and brick were used in the design to emphasize a warm feeling. Furniture was carefully picked out to match the industrial style so in the lounge areas chesterfield designed sofas and chairs are shown and leather dining chairs in the dining area.

For this wall design I recreated my sketch into a screen that can be intersctive the screen was a big influence for my rebar in my dorm design.

Design Intent The intention of this project was to design a hallway drawing inspiration from a collection of design precedent images which were then transformed into hallway models in sketchup. Then using knowledge of the color wheel I created samples from a selection of the hallway models. From there I selected the final design and added color, texture, and materiality.

The hallway was designed to make the occupant feel warm and cozy with the use of natural materials. The skylights help cast shadows onto the acrchitecture thus displaying unique patterns on the walls and floor.
