The Chandler Chamber Community Awards Are Back! (Page 18) May 2026

TerriKimble President | CEO
As we welcome the month of May, we are also celebrating one of the most vital pillars of our local economy our small businesses
Small Business Month is a time to recognize the entrepreneurs, family-owned companies, and innovative startups that bring energy, character, and resilience to our community. These businesses are more than storefronts and service providers — they are job creators, community supporters, and the foundation of our local economy
Every day, small business owners embrace risk, juggle multiple responsibilities, and approach challenges with creativity and determination. Whether it’s a neighborhood café that knows your order by heart, a local manufacturer driving innovation, or a professional service firm helping other businesses grow, each one plays an essential role in the strength and identity of our region.
This May, we invite you to join us in celebrating the entrepreneurs who make our community vibrant and strong. Take time to shop local, refer a small business, or simply say thank you to a business owner who has made a difference.

For 114 years, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce has stood as a cornerstone of business advocacy, economic growth, and community connection in Chandler. This milestone is more than a celebration of longevity; it is a reflection of sustained commitment to supporting local businesses and shaping a thriving, forward-looking community.
Since its founding, the Chamber has evolved alongside Chandler itself, growing from a small agricultural town int one of Arizona’s most dynamic economic hubs. Through every stage of that transformation, the Chamber has remained focused on its core purpose: championing th success of local businesses while fostering an environ where innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaboration flourish.
Reaching 114 years is a testament to the strength of t Chamber’s network, its members, partners, and leade who continue to invest in Chandler’s future. Programs, events, and initiatives are designed not only to suppor individual business success, but to elevate the broade economic vitality of the region.

As Chandler continues to grow, so too does the responsibility for the Chamber to lead. Looking ahead, the focus remains clear: strengthening business resources, advocating for policies that support economic development, and creating meaningful connections that drive long-term impact.
Celebrating 114 years is not simply about honoring the past. It is about reaffirming a commitment to the future, onebuilt on partnership, progress, and a shared vision for continued success in Chandler’s business community.
Internships are no longer defined by entry-level tasks they’ve become a strategic investment in the future of both businesses and students. That shift was the focus of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce’s Education and Workforce Series event, Internships That Work: Building Your Talent Pipeline.
The panel brought together leaders from industry and education, including Ferryn Palmer of PacSci EMC, Tia Baldwin Barnes of Saras Micro Devices, Martine Garcia of Arizona State University, and Karl Ernsberger of Skipcourse. Together, they highlighted how internship programs are helping shape Chandler’s workforce pipeline
A central theme was the mutual value internships create. For businesses, interns offer fresh perspectives while serving as a pipeline for future talent—individuals who can grow into full-time roles with a strong understanding of company culture. For students, internships provide hands-on, real-world experience that builds skills, confidence, and professional direction

Each May, Small Business Month highlights the entrepreneurs and local businesses that shape Chandler’s identity and drive its economic vitality. Behind that momentum is the Chandler Chamber of Commerce, a consistent partner dedicated to helping small businesses grow, connect, and succeed.
At its core, the Chamber exists to create opportunity. It brings business owners together, fostering relationships that lead to collaboration, visibility, and growth. It amplifies their voice through advocacy, ensuring small businesses are
represented in the policies that impact their future And it equips them with the insights and resources needed to navigate an ever-changing business landscape.
But beyond programs and initiatives, the Chamber’s impact is rooted in its commitment to community. Small businesses are more than economic drivers, they are the foundation of Chandler’s character and quality of life. By supporting them, the Chamber helps strengthen the entire community
For many small businesses, success is shaped not just by what they know, but by who they’re connected to and how they’re positioned within the broader community. The Chandler Chamber of Commerce plays a quiet but meaningful role in that equation, creating spaces where relationships take root, opportunities surface, and businesses gain traction in ways that aren’t always immediate, but are consistently impactful over time.
Small Business Month is not just a celebration, it’s a reminder that when small businesses thrive, Chandler thrives.

Every day in Chandler, transportation infrastructure quietly powers our economy and quality of life. It’s the commute along the Loop 202, the steady flow of goods moving through the I-10 corridor, and the reliable access that allows employees to reach major job centers like Intel and the Price Road Corridor. For our small businesses, it means shipments arriving on time and customers getting through the door. For first responders, it means reaching emergencies without delay. These are not abstract systems. They are the backbone of how our community functions. When infrastructure works, Chandler works.
That’s why the upcoming federal surface transportation reauthorization, set to expire on September 30, 2026, is so important Reauthorization is more than a policy exercise in Washington. It provides the long-term certainty our state and local partners need to plan, fund, and deliver major infrastructure projects. Without a reliable federal partnership, communities like Chandler face delays, rising costs, and missed opportunities. Predictable investment allows Arizona to stay competitive, keep projects on track, and ensure our infrastructure keeps pace with rapid growth.
Here in Chandler and across the Southeast Valley, we’ve seen first-hand how strategic infrastructure investment delivers real returns. Improvements along Loop 202 and key arterial corridors have enhanced freight mobility, reduced congestion, and expanded access to jobs. These investments support thousands of workers and enable businesses to grow and compete. Reliable transportation networks also strengthen supply chains, something our business community knows is essential in today’s economy. When infrastructure is efficient, businesses can operate with confidence, and communities benefit from safer, more connected roadways.
At the Chandler Chamber of Commerce, we consistently hear from businesses that transportation is a top priority. Whether it’s reducing delays, improving safety, or ensuring efficient movement of goods, the need is clear. These challenges are not unique to Chandler. They are shared across Arizona and the nation. Addressing them requires coordination between the public and private sectors, as well as strong partnerships at the local, state, and federal levels.
Infrastructure investment is not just about roads. It is about keeping our economy moving and our communities connected.
We also want to recognize the leadership of Congressman Greg Stanton on this issue. His continued focus on strengthening federal transportation investment and advocating for Arizona’s infrastructure needs has been instrumental. We appreciate his participation in our recent infrastructure roundtable and his engagement with the business community on the importance of long-term, reliable funding solutions.
As Congress works toward reauthorization, it is critical that they deliver a bipartisan, forward looking package that reflects the needs of fast-growing communities like Chandler Continued federal partnership will ensure we can build on our progress, support our workforce, and keep our economy moving forward.
The Chandler Chamber of Commerce program
Chandler Works, a workforce development ecosystem designed to connect employers with a comprehensive network of education and training resources. This initiative helps businesses build, prepare, and engage the talent needed to sustain Chandler’s thriving economy.
Chandler Works focuses on three strategic pillars:

Talent Pipeline: Connect with future employees through the Chandler Job Board, internships, apprenticeships, and job shadowing to identify skilled candidates early.
Workforce Readiness: Support students and job seekers through resume workshops, mock interviews, and skill-building activities to ensure they are prepared for the professional world.
Career Exploration: Showcase real-world pathways by hosting facility tours, classroom presentations, and career exploration events.
"Chandler Works is more than a program it is an ecosystem built to ensure local talent is ready to meet the demands of our business community," said Terri Kimble, President & CEO of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce.

Members of the Chandler Chamber Leadership Institute Class 42 recently completed a high-impact visit to the Arizona State Capitol and the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), gaining firsthand insight into the legislative and regional planning processes that shape the East Valley.

Inside the Legislative Process
The visit provided participants with a unique "behind-the-scenes" look at state government:
Mock Floor Session: Representative
Jeff Weninger and Representative Patty Contreras led the class through a realistic mock floor session, allowing members to experience the mechanics of debate and lawmaking firsthand.

Executive Briefing: The team transitioned to the Governor’s office’s conference room for a surprise briefing from key advisors, discussing the executive branch’s role in state policy.

The group also met with Audra Koester Thomas at the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG). As the regional planning agency for the Phoenix metropolitan area, MAG provided a comprehensive update on critical "happenings" across Arizona, including transportation, environment, and human services
The day concluded back at Chandler City Hall, where the class engaged in a candid Q&A session with Chandler City Council members and City employees. This session bridged the gap between state-level policy and local implementation, highlighting how municipal leadership manages the daily needs of the community.
Through this immersive experience, Class 42 continues to develop the advocacy skills and civic knowledge necessary to lead Chandler’s thriving business community into the future.

The U S Supreme Court’s decision striking down the tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) has opened the door for many U S small businesses and importers to seek refunds However, determining whether your business qualifies and understanding what steps to take next can be challenging Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is preparing to launch its widely anticipated online portal to process refunds for the tariffs imposed under IEEPA As the refund process is constructed, this guide provides information to help businesses identify whether they paid IEEPA based tariffs, understand what types of duties may be eligible for refunds, and prepare for the emerging refund process
In this article:
The latest updates on the IEEPA refund process
Step-by-step guide for importers to receive refunds and what to do right now
Questions to discuss with your customs broker or trade counsel
On April 20, CBP launched phase one of the tariff refund process The new portal will refund duties to importers through CBP’s Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) system, which is well known to importers CBP is calling this new ACE functionality the Consolidated Administration and Processing of Entries (CAPE) system
More details about the refund process on the IEEPA Duty Refunds website The site contains instructions on how importers will be able to file for refunds through an electronic system
The following steps may be helpful for importers as the refund process begins
On April 13, CBP introduced a new, detailed IEEPA tariff refunds landing page that the agency will keep updated, including a visual guide on how to upload your refund entries spreadsheet Companies may wish to consult their customs broker or trade counsel as they examine this information and consider next steps, including those below
Bottom Line: Your customs broker can help you evaluate the liquidation status of your entries and whether any of your entries fall into these categories
Here are four things importers can do now to prepare for tariff refunds when they are made available
Make sure your CBP importer record (Form 5106) for your company is up-to-date and includes an email address that is not your broker’s email (required for authentication). Note: Licensed custom brokers have access to the ACE Secure Data Portal and can update Form 5106.
2.
Create an account in CBP’s Automated Commercial Environment Secure Data Portal (ACE Portal). This will enable your company to run reports and download entry data to show IEEPA tariff payments for which your company may seek refunds.
Note: Some importers have reported new ACE account setup takes 3-4 weeks.
Sign up for Automated Clearinghouse (ACH) Refund. CBP requires ACH enrollment to receive duty refunds electronically. After enrolling for ACH refunds, any refund you receive will automatically be deposited directly into your bank account. Companies may wish to consult with their customs broker or trade counsel.
Determine whether all of your IEEPA entries will be covered in the system's initial rollout, or whether you have entries that are within the two exceptions identified below. If you have entries that fall within the two exceptions, you should consult with your customs broker and lawyer to evaluate whether further action is needed to preserve your right to a refund. The system will not immediately apply to all IEEPA entries. There are two exceptions:
1.Liquidated
When the system first launches, it will only apply to unliquidated entries and entries within the 90-day voluntary reliquidation period. CBP plans to expand the system to cover entries for which liquidation has become final, but it has not specified a date by which it will do so.
2.Other
CBP has stated that the following categories of entries subject to IEEPA duties will not be processed through this system, at least initially:
Entries that have been flagged for reconciliation, as well as Entry Type 09;
Entries designated on a drawback claim;
Entries covered by an open protest;
Entries not filed in ACE, and entries without a liquidation status is ACE; and Entries subject to AD/CVD, for which DOC has issued liquidation instructions, that are pending liquidation.
After the Supreme Court’s Feb. 20 decision on IEEPA, the U.S. Court of International Trade (CIT) ordered the government to take immediate action on refunds.
On March 6, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) submitted a plan for an expedited and simplified tariff refund system to the CIT. CBP indicated it would be able to create and launch the tariff refund system within 45 days (by around April 20). The U.S. Chamber welcomed the CBP proposal.
On March 12, CBP released new details of a 4-step refund system. Those steps are detailed above. On April 13, CBP released more detailed guidance, with visual guides, on a new website.
Throughout the past month, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce once again demonstrated its role as a convener, connector, and catalyst for the local business community. Through a diverse lineup of events, the Chamber brought together leaders from across industries to engage in meaningful dialogue, share insight, and strengthen the foundation of Chandler’s economic future.
From our monthly networking mixers, where relationships are formed and opportunities take shape, to timely conversations on the economic impact of tourism in Arizona, each gathering was designed with intention: to inform, connect, and elevate
Civic engagement also took center stage, as the Chamber hosted forum debates for local elected candidates, providing a platform for thoughtful discussion and empowering the community to stay informed on the issues shaping Chandler’s future.
Industry-specific roundtables created space for deeper conversation, bringing together leaders in healthcare and the nonprofit sector to address challenges, share best practices, and explore collaborative solutions. These discussions reinforced the importance of cross-sector partnerships in building a resilient and thriving community
At the policy level, the Chamber welcomed Congressman Greg Stanton and US Chamber Representative Trey McKenzie for a public policy event focused on federal priorities and their local impact, offering members direct access to the voices shaping business policy.
Looking ahead, workforce development remained a key priority, highlighted through an education-focused roundtable centered on internships. This conversation underscored the importance of building strong talent pipelines and preparing the next generation of professionals to meet the evolving needs of Chandler’s business community
Together, these events reflect more than a busy calendar; they represent a strategic approach to strengthening Chandler’s business ecosystem. By creating space for connection, collaboration, and informed dialogue, the Chamber continues to deliver on its mission: supporting businesses, fostering leadership, and driving sustainable growth across the region.
In late May 2026, ArmorWorks Enterprises Inc. and Fox Valley Metal Tech will unite under a new name: Ravelin Defense.
This transition is more than a rebrand. It represents the natural progression of a strategic partnership, one built on shared expertise, complementary capabilities, and a collective vision for the future of defense manufacturing. By aligning under a single identity, Ravelin Defense reflects not only the integration of operations, but the expansion of what these organizations can deliver together
For partners and suppliers, the message is clear: while the name is changing, the relationships and day-to-day operations remain consistent. The teams, processes, and commitments that have defined these companies continue uninterrupted. Existing agreements, procurement practices, and points of contact will remain in place, ensuring a seamless transition for those who have been integral to their success.
Rooted in strength and strategic defense, the name “Ravelin” represents resilience and forward momentum. As the company steps into this next chapter, its commitment to quality, partnership, and innovation remains at the forefront.

Congratulations! Livability com has unveiled its highly anticipated 2026 Top 100 Best Places to Live list, and Chandler has earned a spot among the nation’s most vibrant and livable small to mid-sized cities
Now in its 13th year, Livability's annual ranking is unique in its focus on cities with populations between 75,000 and 500,000 – the "sweet spot" size that offers big opportunities while remaining small enough to feel like home In a time of shifting economic tides, Chandler's inclusion underscores its commitment to maintaining a community where residents can truly thrive
"Our 'Top 100' is an annual data-driven collection of what we consider to be the best small to mid-size cities," says Amanda Ellis, Livability com Editor-in-Chief "As Americans face consistently evolving work dynamics and a desire for the best quality of life possible amidst inflation and uncertainty, our list celebrates places where people can more realistically build families, launch businesses and lead meaningful lives "
To build this list, Livability partnered with the data experts at Applied Geographic Solutions (AGS) to analyze nearly 100 data points across eight essential categories: Economy & Housing: We prioritize affordability by comparing average rents and home prices to local incomes
Amenities & Environment: We measure the “fun factor” alongside air quality and green space Safety, Health & Education: We evaluate the vital infrastructure that keeps your family safe and supported
Transportation: We look for places where you spend less time in traffic and more time living Because Americans face a higher cost of living than ever before, this year's proprietary algorithm gave extra weight to the Housing and Cost of Living category. To ensure the 2026 list remains attainable and affordable, Livability only includes cities with a median home value under $500,000.
Chandler stands out for its exceptional performance in the health, economy and education categories, proving it is a place where people can actually afford to live, work and play. Additionally, Chandler has the highest overall LivScore of any Arizona city featured on this year's ranking.
This recognition is a testament to the hard work of your city's leaders, residents and businesses. Chandler’s progress has always pointed to stories about people who choose to invest their time, talent and resources here This spirit is found in classrooms, storefronts, industrial parks and nonprofit organizations. And it will come into sharp focus at the 39th Annual Chandler Chamber Community Awards this month.
This event reflects what makes Chandler special. It brings together
pe our future workforce, small business owners who pursue opportunities, nonprofit and community leaders who strengthen our safety net and public servants who keep this city safe
Many of Chandler’s most memorable successes started with a single person, or a family, who have taken a risk on an idea. They sign a lease, hire their first employees and put their name on the door. They help define the character of our community and show future entrepreneurs that Chandler is a place where dreams can become viable enterprises. Recognitions like Small Business of the Year are a statement about the kind of city we want to continue to be.
This month also is a time to reflect on service and sacrifice in a different way During National Police Week, our community honors police officers who have given their lives in the line of duty. Our Fallen Officers Memorial stands as a solemn reminder that the safety we often take for granted has been secured at a profound cost. The businesses that open their doors each day, and the families that call Chandler home, do so in no small part because of that commitment.
When viewed together, the Community Awards through the recognition of educators, small business owners and public safety professionals tell a powerful story about Chandler’s values We value learning and preparing for the future We celebrate innovation and entrepreneurship. We honor service and courage. And we understand that Chandler’s story is built by people from every sector who are willing to step forward for something larger than themselves.
As the Community Awards spotlight this year’s honorees, I hope we all see it as more than a single evening. It is an invitation to stay engaged in the work of keeping Chandler a safe, thriving and welcoming community for everyone.

On networking, connection, and why the difference matters
By Eric O. Ledermann
I have a complicated relationship with networking.
I show up. I try to connect. I bury my anxiety and introduce myself with a practiced façade of ease that probably looks like confidence (or so I'm told) and is mostly just muscle memory from decades of meeting people where showing up and being present was a big part of the job. I collect business cards or try to get the phone tappy thing to work with mixed results. I try to follow up because that's what you're supposed to do. And somewhere in the middle of all that, I feel a low-grade exhaustion that has nothing to do with being tired.
It's the ambient sense that every conversation is a negotiation in disguise. Each of us sizing up the other to decide whether or not this connection will help, hurt, or make no difference at all
I've attended BNI meetings, chamber gatherings, and other networking events long enough now to recognize the choreography. Someone asks what you do, but they're really asking whether you can do something for them. The follow-up coffee isn't curiosity, it's prospecting. The referral isn't generosity, it's reciprocity accounting (and, in the case of groups like BNI, stats building). I scratched your back last month. My turn. None of this is malicious, of course. Most of it seems not even conscious. It's just the water we swim in, and after a while you stop noticing you're wet.
Except, I notice I've always noticed Even in the nonprofit world in which I swam for two decades, the part that spent years sitting with people in hospital rooms, funeral parlors, and messy kitchen tables, learning the difference between presence and performance. Genuine human connection has a texture to it. I can feel it when it's missing.
And yet, I keep going back—to the chamber meetings, the networking mixers, the coffee appointments.
I've made peace with the fact that there are parts of networking that I love, when it's working the way I think it's supposed to Not the transactional version, but the real one The conversation that starts as an elevator pitch and somehow wanders into what the other actually believes and loves, what they're afraid of, what made them leave one career to build another they really wanted. Those conversations happen at chamber mixers too, if we're willing to wait for them, willing to be the one who risks being vulnerable first.
The handshake is just the beginning. What comes after is up to you.
