On 9th December 2023, Prof. Leonie Baldacchino, daughter of Prince High Patron Prof. Alfred Josef Baldacchino, was officially and solemnly Installed as Grand Master of OBSS, with all the rights, privileges and duties pertaining to the Grand Magisterium. In her Inaugural Address (see next page), Grand Master Baldacchino spoke about empathy, creativity and integrity as crucial qualities in steering the Order towards the pursuit of its aims, particularly the promotion of humanitarian and philanthropic activities. She pledged to bring new ideas into the Order so as to blend centuries-old traditions with modernday social innovations, and looks forward to working with the Order’s many members to help make the world a better place

Grand MASTER’S INAUGURAL ADDRESS

1. Empathy will help us tune in to the struggles and challenges that are faced by members of our communities, thereby identifying worthy causes that we might wish to address;

2. Creativity will help us come up with solutions to their problems, which we could develop and implement as social innovations; and

3. Integrity will help us ensure that we always select the most appropriate course of action, in the interest of those we are aiming to support.

Dear Knights, Dames, family, and friends,

I am honoured and humbled to stand before you today, formally addressing you for the first time as Grand Master of OBSS.

This day has been hailed as a historic event, because never before has a woman been entrusted with this role. While this may be factually true, being a woman is a non-issue to me in this context, because what matters are the competences and qualities that I bring to the table in this leadership position.

A few weeks ago I was invited to take part in a panel discussion for MBA students at University of Malta on the topic of leadership, and one of the students asked me what the most important skills of a good leader are. There is a long list of skills and qualities that a good leader should have but, to me, three of the most crucial ones are:

1. Empathy - putting yourselves in the shoes of others to truly feel and understand what they are going through;

2. Creativity – coming up with new ideas and solutions that can add value and solve problems; and

3. Integrity – doing the right thing, even when nobody is looking.

These, my dear Confreres and Consoeurs, are among the qualities that I pledge to bring to OBSS, and I encourage all of you to do the same. Those of you who are familiar with the Statute of the Order will know the aims of OBSS, the first of which is the promotion of humanitarian and philanthropic activities. I believe that the three above-mentioned qualities (among others) will help us in the pursuit of these aims. For example:

I have many ideas, but I shall not elaborate now. There will be more appropriate times to share my thoughts and – more importantly – listen to yours, because without you, the Order is nothing. In the past, the Knights’ tools were their weapons and shields; today, our tools include our ideas and expertise, and the goodwill to apply them for the benefit of others. Therefore during the first year of my Magisterium, I will be reaching out to all our Grand Priories to get to know you better, and together we will draw up suitable strategies to fulfil the Order’s aims, focusing first and foremost on the needs of our respective communities.

I would like to end by thanking – also on your behalf – my father, now the Prince High Patron of OBSS, for his 37 years of tireless work and commitment to this Order. He has been and will continue to be an inspiration to many, most of all myself. In turn, I also thank you all on behalf of my family for the support and dedication you have shown towards my father and the Order in your various roles over the years. You are all our extended family.

I look forward to working with you to make this world a better place.

Cari Cavalieri, Dame, parenti, e amici,

Sono onorata di trovarmi davanti a voi oggi, rivolgendomi formalmente a voi per la prima volta come Gran Maestro dell’OBSS.

Questo giorno è stato segnalato come un evento storico, perché mai prima d’ora a una donna era stato affidato questo ruolo. Anche se questo può essere di fatto vero, essere donna non importa affatto per me in questo contesto, perché ciò che conta sono le competenze e le qualità che metto in campo in questa posizione.

Qualche settimana fa, sono stata invitata a partecipare in una discussione per studenti della ‘MBA’ (Master in Gestione Aziendale) presso l’Università di Malta sul tema del leadership, e uno degli studenti mi ha chiesto quali siano le competenze più importanti di un buon leader. C’è una lunga lista di abilità e qualità che un buon leader dovrebbe avere ma, per me, tre delle più cruciali sono:

1. Empatia - mettersi nei panni degli altri per sentire e capire veramente cosa stanno attraversando;

2. Creatività – trovare nuove idee e soluzioni che possano aggiungere valore e risolvere problemi; e

3. Integrità – fare la cosa giusta anche quando non guarda nessuno.

4.

Queste, miei cari Confratelli e Consorelle, sono tra le qualità che mi impegno a portare all’OBSS, e invito tutti voi a fare lo stesso. Chi di voi conosce lo Statuto dell’Ordine conosce gli scopi dell’OBSS, la prima delle quali è la promozione delle attività umanitarie e filantropiche. Credo che le tre qualità sopraindicate (tra le altre) ci aiuteranno nel perseguimento di questi scopi. Per esempio:

1. L’empatia ci aiuterà a sintonizzarci con le lotte e le sfide che devono affrontare i membri delle nostre comunità, identificando così cause meritevoli che potremmo voler affrontare;

2. La creatività ci aiuterà a trovare soluzioni ai loro problemi, che potremmo sviluppare e implementare come innovazioni sociali; e

3. L’Integrità ci aiuterà a garantire che scegliamo sempre la linea d’azione più appropriata, nell’interesse di coloro che intendiamo sostenere.

Ho molte idee, ma non le elaborerò ora. Ci saranno momenti più opportuni per condividere i miei pensieri e – cosa ancora più importante – ascoltare i vostri, perché senza di voi l’Ordine non è niente. Nel passato, gli strumenti dei Cavalieri erano le loro armi e i loro scudi; oggi, i nostri strumenti includono le nostre idee, la nostra esperienza e la buona volontà di applicarle a beneficio degli altri. Pertanto, durante il primo anno del mio Magistero, mi rivolgerò a tutti i nostri Gran Priorati per conoscervi meglio, e insieme elaboreremo strategie adeguate per realizzare gli scopi dell’Ordine, concentrandoci innanzitutto sulle esigenze delle nostre rispettive comunità.

Vorrei concludere ringraziando – anche a nome vostro – mio padre, ora Principe Alto Patrono dell’OBSS, per i suoi 37 anni di instancabile lavoro e impegno a favore di questo Ordine. È stato e continuerà ad essere fonte di ispirazione per molti, soprattutto per me. A mia volta ringrazio tutti voi anche a nome della mia famiglia per il sostegno e la dedizione che avete dimostrato nei confronti di mio padre e dell’Ordine nei vari ruoli che avete ricoperto nel corso degli anni. Siete tutti la nostra famiglia allargata.

Rimango in attesa di lavorare con voi per rendere questo mondo un posto migliore.

37 th Anniversary of Prince Grand Master Prof. Alfred Josef Baldacchino’s Grand Magisterium

Onthe 5th December 2023, our beloved Prince Grand Master Prof. Alfred Josef Baldacchino celebrated the 37th Anniversary of his Grand Magisterium. Under his leadership, OBSS has grown from around 300 members in a handful of countries to a multi-national Order of thousands of Knights and Dames around the world. As announced on his 86th birthday last June, the Prince Grand Master renounced his Title and Rank on this day to assume those of Prince High Patron of the Order. His successor is the current Vicar Grand Master, his daughter Prof. Leonie Baldacchino, who was officially installed during an international ceremony in Valletta on Saturday 9th December. On behalf of all Knights and Dames of the Order, we express our profound thanks to our Prince Grand Master for his long years of dedicated leadership. To the incoming Grand Master, we extend our full support and loyalty.

Il5 dicembre 2023, il nostro amato Principe Gran Maestro Prof. Alfred Josef Baldacchino ha celebrato il 37º anniversario del suo Gran Magistero. Sotto la sua guida, l’OBSS è cresciuta da circa 300 membri in po paesi a un Ordine multinazionale di migliaia di Cavalieri e Dame in tutto il mondo. Come annunciato lo scorso giugno in occasione del suo 86º compleanno, il Principe Gran Maestro ha rinunciato al suo Titolo e Rango in questo giorno per assumere quelli di Principe Alto Patrono dell’Ordine. Il suo successore è l’attuale Gran Maestro Vicario, sua figlia Prof. Leonie Baldacchino, che è stata ufficialmente insediata durante una cerimonia internazionale a Valletta sabato 9 dicembre. A nome di tutti i Cavalieri e Dame dell’Ordine, esprimiamo il nostro profondo ringraziamento al nostro Principe Gran Maestro per i lunghi anni di dedizione e leadership. All’neo Gran Maestro, estendiamo il nostro pieno sostegno e lealtà.

INVESTITURE in Malta

On Saturday 9th December 2023, OBSS held a solemn Investiture Ceremony of Knights and Dames at St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral in Valletta, Malta. The first part of the Ceremony was presided by the Prince High Patron Alfred Josef Baldacchino, who conferred the Title of Hereditary Count on Baron Vitor Bettencourt Da Silva and on Baron Mario Dingli, and the Title of Hereditary Marchioness on Countess Annamaria Pozzi. He also raised 5 Knights and Dames from the Grand Priory of Malta and 9 from the Grand Priory of Italy to a higher of Grade: Count Mario Dingli was raised to Knight Grand Cross of Justice; Countess Grace Coleiro was raised to Dame Grand Officer of Justice; Marchesino Anthony F. Ventura and Antonio De Finis were raised to Knight Commander of Justice; Angelo De Martino was raised to Knight Grand Cross of Magistral Grace; Luigi Coriglio and Francesco Sulas were raised to Knight Grand Officer of Magistral Grace; Lorenzo Albergo, Stefano Marrone, Luigi Minafra and Salvatore Pitirollo were raised to Knight Commander of Magistral Grace; and Ella Campione, Helen Stockwell and Giulia Vazzoler were raised to Dame Commander of Magistral Grace.

The Prince High Patron then performed the Installation of the new Grand Master, his daughter Prof. Leonie Baldacchino, who presided the second part of the Ceremony, wherein the following Postulants from the Grand Priories of Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Macedonia received their Investiture: Ignazio di Blasi, Andreas Dragone, Sasko Jovev, Franz Samuel, Dmitry Shlosberg and Urs Wirths were admitted as Knights Officer of Magistral Grace; and Raffaella Pugliese and Angela Ram were admitted as Dames Officer of Magistral Grace.

The Prince High Patron and Grand Master were assisted by various Dignitaries including the Grand Prior of Malta H.E. Gr. Cr. Baron Duncan Brincat and the Grand Prior of Italy H.E. Marquis Gr. Gr. Cosimo Mario Stefanelli. The religious rites were celebrated by the National Prelate of the Grand Priory of Malta Fr. Brian Gialanzè, while musical services were provided by organist John Aquilina. The Investiture Ceremony was followed by a Gala Dinner at the Palace Hotel in Sliema, where guests were treated to a live performance by renowned pianist Dame Comm. Giulia Vazzoler.

Sabato 9 dicembre 2023 l’OBSS ha tenuto una solenne Cerimonia di Investitura di Cavalieri e Dame presso la Pro-Cattedrale di San Paolo a La Valletta, Malta. La prima parte della Cerimonia è stata presieduta dal Principe Alto Patrono Alfred Josef Baldacchino, che ha conferito il Titolo di Conte Ereditario al Barone Vitor Bettencourt Da Silva e al Barone Mario Dingli, e il Titolo di Marchesa Ereditaria alla Contessa Annamaria Pozzi. Ventura e Antonio De Finis sono stati elevati a Commendatore di Giustizia; Angelo De Martino è stato elevato a Gran Croce di Grazia Magistrale; Luigi Coriglio e Francesco Sulas sono stati elevati a Grand’Ufficiale di Grazia Magistrale; Lorenzo Albergo, Stefano Marrone, Luigi Minafra e Salvatore Pitirollo soo stati elevati a Commendatore di Grazia Magistrale; e Ella Campione, Helen Stockwell e Giulia Vazzoler sono state elevate a Dama di Commenda di Grazia Magistrale.

Il Principe Alto Patrono ha poi eseguito l’Insediamento del nuovo Gran Maestro, sua figlia Prof.ssa Leonie Baldacchino, che ha presieduto la seconda parte della Cerimonia, nella quale hanno ricevuto l’Investitura i seguenti Postulanti dei Gran Priorati d’Italia, Germania, Svizzera e Macedonia: Ignazio di Blasi, Andreas Dragone, Sasko Jovev, Franz Samuel, Dmitry Shlosberg e Urs Wirths sono stati ammessi come Cavalieri Ufficiale di Grazia Magistrale; e Raffaella Pugliese e Angela Ram sono stati ammesse come Dame Ufficiale di Grazia Magistrale.

La Cerimonia di Investitura è stata seguita da una Cena di Gala presso il Palace Hotel a Sliema, dove gli ospiti hanno assistito ad un’esibizione dal vivo della famosa pianista Dama Comm. On Friday 8th December 2023, Universitas Sancti Cyrilli A.D.1669 – the cultural branch of OBSS – held an Academic Convocation at the Palace Hotel in Sliema, Malta. This began with the inauguration of an art exhibition featuring sculptures by Prof. Raymond Cortis and paintings by Mr. Glenn Gerada, followed by presentations on architectural and artistic restoration works in Malta by Dr. Lorenzo Albergo, the evolution of confrontation and conflict in the East and West by Dr. Stefano Marrone, and a glimpse into the rich history of OBSS by Prof. Francesco Frezzato.

The 24th October 2023 marked the 53rd Anniversary from the Foundation of the Grand Priory of Malta, through a notarial deed enrolled in the acts of Notary Paul Pullicino in the year 1970. Commemorating this anniversary provides a recurring moment of memory and inspiration. This important day serves as recognition of historical episodes, present realities and imaginative considerations about our future. It is an occasion which calls us to reflect on our origins, whilst acknowledging, scrutinizing and celebrating what we are. Today’s anniversary prompts us to conceptualize and creatively envision a future that represents fidelity to our heritage, whilst at the same instance seeking to achieve balance as we grasp emerging new insights, possibilities and technologies that will help us to care for what we strive. it should serve us as an occasion to remember, acknowledge our own juncture in history, and envision the future with hope and fidelity. acknowledging our past serves us in further enhancing our endeavours to sustain our values, beliefs and sense of duty.

Il24 ottobre 2023 ha segnato il 53º anniversario della fondazione del Gran Priorato di Malta, attraverso un atto notarile iscritto negli atti del notaio Paul Pullicino nell’anno 1970. Commemorare questo anniversario offre un momento ricorrente di memoria e ispirazione. Questa giornata importante rappresenta il riconoscimento di episodi storici, realtà attuali e considerazioni immaginative sul nostro futuro. È un’occasione che ci invita a riflettere sulle nostre origini, mentre riconosciamo, esaminiamo e celebramo ciò che siamo. L’anniversario di oggi ci spinge a concepire e immaginare creativamente un futuro che rappresenti fedeltà al nostro patrimonio, cercando allo stesso tempo di raggiungere un equilibrio mentre cogliamo nuove intuizioni, possibilità e tecnologie emergenti che ci aiuteranno a prendersi cura di ciò che ci sforziamo di realizzare. Dovrebbe servirci come occasione per ricordare, riconoscere il nostro punto di svolta nella storia e immaginare il futuro con speranza e fedeltà. Riconoscere il nostro passato ci aiuta a potenziare ulteriormente i nostri sforzi per sostenere i nostri valori, le nostre convinzioni e il senso del dovere.

Following my Installation as Grand Master last December, I issued a Magistral Decree on 02 January 2024 revoking all Ranks which had formerly been conferred, to allow some reorganisation of the international, national and diplomatic structures of OBSS. This was followed by a series of Decrees re-establishing the various Ranks, Councils and Committees, the first of which were the Executive Council and the Magistral Council. In accordance with the Statute of OBSS, in my role as Grand Master I preside both these Councils. The Lieutenant Grand Master H.E. Marquis Gr. Cr. Anthony Ventura is the Vice President of the Executive Council, and the Vicar Grand Master H.E. Marquis Gr. Cr. Francesco Guardavaccaro is the Vice President of the Magistral Council.

Facendo seguito al mio Insediamento come Gran Maestro lo scorso dicembre, ho emesso un Decreto Magistrale il 02 gennaio 2024 revocando tutti i Ranghi gia’ conferiti, per poter effettuare qualche riorganizzazione della struttura internazionale, nazionale e diplomatica dell’OBSS. Seguirono una serie di Decreti che ricostituirono i vari Ranghi, Consigli e Comitati, i primi dei quali erano il Consiglio Esecutivo e il Consiglio Magistrale. In conformità allo Statuto dell’OBSS, nel mio ruolo di Gran Maestro, io presiedo entrambi questi Consigli. Il Luogotenente Gran Maestro S.E. Marchese Gr. Cr. Anthony Ventura è il Vice Presidente del Consiglio Esecutivo, e il Gran Maestro Vicario S.E. Marchese Gr. Cr. Francesco Guardavaccaro è Vice Presidente del Consiglio Magistrale.

grand Priory of Malta’s Lenten REtreat

The Grand Priory of Malta’s Lenten Retreat was this year held on Sunday 17th March in the beautiful Chapel of Our Saviour in Kalkara. The warm sunny weather matched perfectly with the Congregation’s intention to gather and share prayers and significant moments with one another. The Retreat began

with a celebration of Holy Mass, followed by the Eucharistic Adoration and Spiritual Talk, all led by the National Prelate Fr. Brian Gialanzè. Spontaneous prayers and thoughts were also shared by those present.

Ritiro Quaresimale del Gran Priorato di Malta

IlRitiro Quaresimale del Gran Priorato di Malta si è tenuto quest’anno domenica 17 marzo nella bellissima Cappella del Nostro Salvatore a Kalkara. Il clima caldo e soleggiato si è abbinato perfettamente con l’intenzione della Congregazione di riunirsi e condividere tra loro preghiere e momenti significativi. Il ritiro è iniziato con la celebrazione della Santa Messa, seguita dall’Adorazione Eucaristica e dal Colloquio Spirituale, tutto guidato dal Prelato Nazionale Rev. Brian Gialanzè. Preghiere e pensieri spontanei sono stati condivisi anche dai presenti.

Meeting between the Grand Master and the Vicar Grand Master in Pisa

On Friday 15th March 2024, the Vicar Grand Master Marquis Dr. Francesco Guardavaccaro hosted the Grand Master Prof. Leonie Baldacchino at his law firm in Pisa, Italy. They shared memories of the Order’s past initiatives and discussed future plans and endeavours, in line with their vision to blend chivalric traditions with social innovations. Grand Master Baldacchino shared her reaction to the meeting on the OBSS Facebook page: “What a great pleasure it was to spend time and share ideas with this true gentleman!”, she said.

Avv. Francesco Guardavaccaro ha ospitato il Gran Maestro Prof.ssa Leonie Baldacchino presso il suo studio legale a Pisa. Hanno condiviso ricordi delle passate iniziative dell’Ordine e discusso futuri piani e progetti, in conformità con la loro visione di fondere le tradizioni cavalleresche con le innovazioni sociali. Il Gran Maestro Baldacchino ha condiviso la sua reazione all’incontro sulla pagina Facebook dell’OBSS: “Che grande piacere è stato trascorrere un po’ di tempo e condividere idee con il nostro Gran Maestro Vicario - un vero gentiluomo!”, ha detto.

Good Friday Procession

Since 2006, the Grand Priory of Malta has been invited by Qormi’s San Ġorg Parish Church to participate in the annual Good Friday Procession, accompanying the statue of The Burial of Christ (known locally as Il-Monument). This is a position of honour which, in the past, used to be assigned to the parish priests. Qormi, also known as Città Pinto, is Malta’s fifth-largest city, and the Procession attracts large crowds of devotees from all over the Island. This year, on 29th March, OBSS was represented by the Grand Master Prof. Leonie Baldacchino, the Grand Chancellor Count Gr. Cr. Anthony Coleiro, Count Gr. Cr. Mario Dingli, Gr. Off. Carmel Bianchi, and Comm. Lorenzo Albergo.

La Processione del Venerdì Santo

Dal2006, il Gran Priorato di Malta è stato invitato dalla Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Ġorg di Qormi a partecipare alla Processione annuale del Venerdì Santo, accompagnando la statua del Sepolcro di Cristo (conosciuta localmente come Il-Monument). Questo è un posto d’onore che, in passato, veniva assegnato ai Parroci. Qormi, conosciuta anche come Città Pinto, è la quinta città più grande di Malta e la Processione attira grandi folle di devoti da tutta l’Isola. Quest’anno, il 29 marzo, l’OBSS era rappresentato dal Gran Maestro Prof. Leonie Baldacchino, il Gran Cancelliere Conte Gr. Cr. Anthony Coleiro, Conte Gr. Cr. Mario Dingli, Gr. Uff. Carmel Bianchi, e Comm. Lorenzo Albergo.
