he sun glints off the swollen Mekong River as colorful boats race down its waters. The festive aroma of fresh flowers, incense, and grilled food whirls through the air alongside the uproarious percussion of drums, the chants of rowers, and the applause of the crowd. This is what you can experience at the boat racing festival in Vientiane, one of the most exciting and colorful events in the Lao calendar.

This dazzling and exhilarating spectacle marks the end of the Buddhist Lent and the start of the dry season. Held around the full moon in October (this year on October 30th), the Mekong is full of water and the weather is sunny and warm. The festival draws thousands of enthusiastic fans and competitors from all corners of the country, who flock to the riverbank to watch the adrenaline-filled races and soak up the festive vibe.

The boat racing festival is more than just a sports contest, it is also a sacred and cultural tradition. The boats are adorned with colorful flowers, flags, and banners, and each one symbolizes a village, a temple,

or an organization. The rowers wear coordinated outfits and chant rhythmic songs to motivate each other and display their team spirit. Men's, women's, and mixed teams compete for prizes, trophies, and bragging rights of winning Laos’ most prestigious boat race.

The festival also features other activities, such as a large riverside street market, concerts, food stalls, and a carnival. The concerts feature local and regional artists, who perform traditional and modern music. The food stalls offer a variety of mouthwatering dishes, such as grilled fish, papaya salad, and coconut desserts. But the most popular dishes that festival-goers look forward to are grilled chicken and khao lam, a sticky rice dessert steamed in tubes of bamboo.

In the evening, after the races have finished, fireworks light up the night sky and create a spectacular finale for the festival. The boat racing festival in Vientiane is a wonderful way to experience the rich and vibrant culture of Laos and join the locals in celebrating their national pride and unity.

TIPS FOR ATTENDING THE BOAT RACING FESTIVAL IN VIENTIANE Don’t go too early: Races don’t begin until the afternoon, so you can take time to explore the excitement and food in the market before and after.

Bring a hat and sunscreen: The weather in Vientiane can be hot and sunny, so it is important to bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the elements.

There is no shade on the riverbank.

Wear comfortable shoes: Roads are closed to traffic, so you will be doing a lot of walking at the festival, so it is important to wear comfortable shoes.

Bring a camera: The Boat Racing Festival is a beautiful event, so you will want to bring a camera to capture these memories.

aos is home to a number of festivals, but the Fireboat Festival in Luang Prabang is one of the most unique and memorable. It's a riot of color and noise, and the atmosphere is electric.

The entire town is lit with colorful lanterns and candles.

Temples, homes, and businesses hang candlelit lanterns instead of electric lights, giving the city a magical glow.

Each village works together to construct and decorate large boats with bamboo frames covered in colored paper and candles, ranging from simpler designs to very elaborate structures featuring mythical creatures.

At dusk, the festival stirs to life with a parade of heua fai, or fireboats, down the main street. Villagers beat drums and sing and dance alongside their floats. It's a truly magical sight, and it's hard not to be swept up in the excitement.

After the parade, the fireboats are launched into the Mekong River, casting a magical glow on the water. The lanterns reflect off the surface, and the flames dance in the darkness. It's an unforgettable sight, and it's easy to see why the Lao people believe that fireboats bring good luck.

The festival is also a religious ceremony. The Lao people believe that the fireboats are a way of thanking the river for its bounty. And as you watch the boats float down the river, it's hard not to feel a sense of gratitude for the beauty of nature and the bounty of the Mekong.

This year, the festival is on October 30th, so plan to be in Luang Prabang during the Fireboat Festival and revel in this truly unique and unforgettable experience.

特且令人难忘的。 节日期间整个琅勃拉 邦色彩斑斓，人潮攒动，气氛非常热烈。节 日期间，整个古城都被五彩缤纷的灯笼和

蜡烛照亮。寺庙、店铺、各家各户都不会使用电灯，而是挂 起灯笼，瞬间这座古城就笼罩上了神奇的光芒。每个村庄 会建造和装饰自己村庄的火船，火船由竹做结构，彩纸覆

盖，上面摆满各种蜡烛。设计有简单的，也有复杂的，甚至 还有神话动物造型的火船。

黄昏时分，街上开始“火船”游行。村民们敲锣打鼓，

载歌载舞，展示自己村落的火船。 气氛异常热烈，观看的 人群很难不被节日的氛围打动。

游行结束后，火船会驶入湄公河，河面立刻被点亮。

灯笼的光亮映射在河面，火焰在黑暗中舞动。此刻的景象

真的非常震撼，我也很自然理解了为什么老挝人民相信 火船会带来好运。

D

eep in the heart of Central Laos, a valley of unparalleled beauty waits to be discovered. This region, the Natane Valley, was shaped by the Hinboun River, surrounded by breathtaking limestone landscapes, and hidden within are some of the hidden wonders of Khammouane Province. Guarded by Konglor Cave on one end and the Nakai Reservoir on the other, travel through this captivating and remote land relies heavily on community-based tourism, which empowers local communities.

Since 2009, Tetraktys, a French NGO, with the support of the the Agence Française de Développement and Chauvet Cave, has worked diligently with the communities and authorities in this area to enhance this unique sightseeing opportunity. Their goal is to develop an effective community ecotourism association that will manage the natural treasures of the region while simultaneously alleviating poverty, promoting local empowerment, boosting gender equality, and curbing outward migration to cities in Laos and Thailand.

To promote tourism in this region, Tétraktys organized a three-day familiarization trip from Nakai to Konglor to allow participants the opportunity to experience this unique and unseen route several months ago.

FROM NAKAI TO MEUANG LUANG As the sun began to sink in the afternoon sky, representatives from various tourism organizations gathered in Nakai at the Tourism Office. Excitement filled the air as they embarked on the first leg of their adventure. A short two-hour drive took them to Meuang Luang, a village nestled in the heart of the valley, where they were warmly welcomed by local villagers.

At Meuang Luang, guests were debriefed on the objectives of this trip, their itinerary, and the myriad of unique experiences that awaited them. The day concluded with a delightful dinner, during which the participants engaged in lively conversations with the villagers, setting the tone for the days ahead.

Day 2

FROM MEUANG LUANG TO NATANE The following morning, after a hearty breakfast at their hosts’ homes, the group set out to explore Meuang Luang. They marveled at the Chao Anouvong Pagoda, built in honor of the former King of Laos who is alleged to have found refuge here, and took a leisurely walk along the ancient track to Gnommalath, which is only passable in some seasons when road conditions allow.

The journey continued to Ban Kouan Sam, where they relished a delicious lunch prepared by the locals. The group then ventured to Phagna Meuangvanh Cave, named for a local chieftain, and another cave sheltering a Buddhist stupa, which is highly revered by the people here.

The group passed through nature's bounty in Ban Nathone and Ban Nabone, where there are charming homestays available and even a fascinating day trek to Tat Sao E. Folktales say this waterfall is a popular place to bring your lover for a romantic escape away from the prying eyes of neighbors.

The day concluded with their arrival in Ban Natane. They explored the village on bikes, appreciating the beauty of the karst landscape and the warmth of the locals. The night was spent in cozy homestays, immersing themselves in the authentic culture and traditions of the region.

NATANE TO KONGLOR AND BACK TO VIENTIANE As the morning sun bathed the valley in golden hues, the group relished in a delightful breakfast with their hosts in Ban Natane. Next, a short tractor ride to the boat pier, where they embarked on an unforgettable cruise through the legendary Konglor Cave on one of the new electric boats in use. These boats help preserve the cave ecosystem, as diesel-powered boats emit fumes that harm the cave’s natural development.

The guide shared fascinating tales and legends as the boats glided through the enchanting cave formation room, marveling at the delicate stalagmites, flowstones, and stalactites. Travelers learned about the ongoing improvements in the cave and even ventured into a newly upgraded room of intriguing cave formations, with a new pathway and lighting.

The journey back to Vientiane began, but not before a coffee break at The Rock Viewpoint at Phou Pha Marn, where they savored the panoramic beauty of the rocky peaks in the Phou Hin Boun National Park.

As they bid farewell to the valley, they carried with them cherished memories and a commitment to promote responsible tourism and support the preservation of this remarkable natural legacy.

The journey was an eye-opening experience, revealing that the heart of Laos had much more to offer than just passing through on Route 13. It was an invitation to share this hidden gem with the world, to raise awareness of its unique natural heritage, and to empower the local communities through sustainable tourism.

angkok sums up images in your mind of the exotic, the mysterious, visions of pearls and silk, graceful dancers in sweet-smelling jasmine garlands and gold pointed headdresses, like in the film “The King and I”. As one of the world’s major transportation hubs Bangkok is a great place to spend a weekend if passing through or moving onto the beaches of southern Thailand.

One of its major attractions is its value for money.

For such a city, it’s incredibly affordable. New York used to be the place to go shopping, but Bangkok can hold its own. You can find everything from high-end electronics to top-quality gems for sometimes a fraction of the price you might pay in Europe or North America.

A good way to spend the day and escape the heat is to head to one of Bangkok’s many malls for some airconditioned relief. A new player in Bangkok’s prolific shopping scene is ICONSIAM. Ultra-fancy stores such as Louis Vuitton and Chanel can be found if you have cash to burn along with more affordable stores such as H&M. There is a rooftop terrace with a view of the skyline of Bangkok across the river. Look out for the spectacular multimedia waterfall upstairs,

which has images and designs actually created in the falling cascade of water. The whole basement is devoted to food. You can find vendors cooking up everything from Pad Thai to mango and sticky rice on the spot.

More traditional handicrafts such as wood carvings and embroidered purses can be found here too. For just a casual look around, Central World mall is hard to beat for a browse. Malls have great food courts too so don’t forget to stop for lunch.

If shopping malls are not your thing there are still some interesting traditional markets around. For an authentic and local experience, you can visit Khlong Toey Market. Open 24/7 this bustling spot supplies the majority of fresh produce for Bangkok’s restaurants. I wanted a more old-fashioned market feel so I headed over to the Pak Khlong Talat flower market close to the palace to see the old-style market traders. There is nothing glorious about this market, it gives you a feeling of stepping back in time and is quite dark and dingy in places. The smell of jasmine and the selection of fresh flowers, particularly orchids are interesting to see as well as flower sellers busy making garlands and votives from an assortment of different blossoms.

Golden-spired temples with opulent decorations are a Thai signature. Especially prolific around the Grand Palace, some of the most important temples in Thailand can be found here. This time we decided to explore Wat Pho where you can see a massive reclining Buddha and the largest collection of Buddha images in the country. The temple compound is quite extensive and there are lots of hidden nooks and crannies to explore. Due to its proximity to the Chao Praya River and Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn) heading down

to the river at sunset gives you a chance to catch the temple in its splendor as the sun goes down. A pictureperfect spot for a beautiful sunset snap!

All that shopping and walking around temples can make you hungry but fear not, Bangkok is famous for its street food. Come evening, smoke wafts off grills, huge woks go on the burners and carts appear from out of nowhere peddling everything from fresh fruit to grilled river prawns. The food is cooked in front of you and could not be any fresher. Prices are cheap.

You should eat a little and move on to the next stall and then try that one! With many exotic and delicious items to sample, Bangkok is a foodie's paradise, with Chinatown especially famous for its variety of choices.

Bangkok is a city that never sleeps and sampling the nightlife is a must. You can go home as late or early as you want. Gone are the days of tacky bars, Bangkok now has rooftop bars with spectacular views. There are plenty of themed bars such as ones selling only gin or decorated like a train’s dining car from the 1920s. Also popular is Tep Bar, which specializes in cocktails and nibbles based on Thai whiskey and local ingredients.

If it’s more off-the-wall drinking spots you are after, the backstreets of Thonglor are worth exploring and contain some of the hippest bars in town. Bangkok, of course, has an extensive transport network. Trains run till around midnight. After that Grab is a popular app for arranging a ride back to your hotel.

ust outside Vientiane’s bustling downtown lies the newly-opened DFICT Mastery Institute of Tourism and Hospitality (DMITH), currently in a soft opening phase until the end of October.

Established by the acclaimed hospitality training provider, DFICT, this institute is set to become a transformative force, empowering individuals with the skills and knowledge to excel in the hospitality industry. Offering 15day focused courses to 6-month comprehensive programs, the institute will develop generations of aspiring professionals, opening doors to a world of opportunities and personal growth.

estled in picturesque valleys and rolling hillsides, Laos’ Oudomxay Province is drawing attention for its eco-fiber bags made from a vine called piet. Handcrafted and used by Khmu artisans for centuries, piet vine bags are enjoying a newfound popularity among fashionistas, ecofiber enthusiasts, and contemporary designers.

Here’s everything you need to know about Laos’ most sustainable handicraft!

Stroll the historic lanes of UNESCO Luang Prabang or the town’s iconic night market, and you’ve no doubt seen a piet jungle vine bag.

Handcrafted by Khmu women living in remote villages in northern Laos’ Oudomxay Province, piet bags are traditionally used to make straps for baskets and bags for foraging and carrying tools. Design collaborations and increased market access have helped piet bags make the leap from rustic, functional village craft to modern, musthave accessories.

Piet (scientific name: Pueraria phaseoloides) is a forage and cover crop that is also known as puero or tropical kudzu. The plant grows particularly well in the northern highlands of Laos, as well as in northern Thailand and southern China. Its creeping or coiling vines grow up to 10m long.

Because its roots harness water and stem soil erosion, piet is tolerated and even encouraged by farmers.

Ban Mang, a small mountain village tucked in a narrow valley in northern Laos’ Oudomxay Province, is the epicenter of piet weaving in Laos.

Here, the majority of women still make piet bags and accessories for personal use and for sale.

The journey to Ban Mang is not for the fainthearted. Situated 300 kilometers northwest of Luang Prabang, Ban Mang village is home to

roughly 150 Khmu families, most of whom are farmers and piet artisans. Prior to the arrival of the Laos-China Railway (LCR), the drive from Luang Prabang took at least six hours, most of it on dirt roads that twisted and turned through narrow, picturesque mountain villages and valleys. Now, it’s possible to go via the LCR from Luang Prabang to Meuang Xay, Oudomxay in 45 minutes. From Meuang Xay, it is another 2 hours by road to Ban Mang.

Piet is harvested during the rainy season. “At the beginning of the rainy season, villagers go to their upland rice paddies to plant rice,” explains Soulinda Philiminda, Head of Production and Design at Ock Pop Tok, a handicrafts center and boutique in Luang Prabang. After planting, men and women usually stay a few days near their paddies to safeguard their newly planted fields. During this time, women will harvest jungle vines growing near the rice paddies or in nearby forests.

After harvesting, the vine is dried in sunlight, then soaked in the river to remove the bark. The piet is taken back to the village. Khmu women work collectively, pulling apart the fiber into strands and then rolling them along their calves. The ends of the fibers are rolled together to make a longer yarn.

After the yarn-making is complete, it’s time to start knotting! The process is similar to crochet, and the knots are similar to those used in making fishing nets.

Historically, Khmu communities traded bags with Tai Lue, Akha, and Lanten communities, among others, for rice, cloth, and tools. It’s still possible to see the bags in use across northern Laos. Increasing demand for agricultural products such as tea, bananas, and corn, and pressure to migrate to cities have led to a general decline in piet production.

In spite of the rising demand for contemporary piet bags, there remain challenges. Changing climate conditions disrupt the growth and availability of piet vines. Additionally, the pressure to cultivate agricultural products such as bananas, corn, and tea for the Chinese market, has resulted in a general shift away from piet making.

“Opportunities for income are limited in these communities,” states Thongkhoun Soutthivilay, codirector of the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre (TAEC). “Piet bags can help women to earn income, while still leaving time for farming and domestic work.”

For the past three years, Ock Pop Tok has partnered with Geneva-based Enhanced Integrated Fund (EIF) to assist piet producers with design and marketing.

New piet products made through this collaboration can be seen at OPT’s boutiques in Luang Prabang and on their website.

LFHC has twelve departments, including a 42-bed in-patient department, an out-patient department that sees 150 children per day, a state-of-the-art neonatal unit that provides care to babies as small as 700 grams, a unique outreach department that travels thousands of kilometers each year to ensure patients who are too sick to travel or can’t afford to journey to LFHC receive the healthcare they need, and a High-Acuity-Unit (HAU) that provides free treatment to the very sickest children in Northern Laos.

Malnutrition is linked to nearly half of the deaths of children under five in Laos.

33% of children in Laos suffer from stunted growth, which causes underdeveloped brains and growth. These impacts affect not just families but the entire country's future.

This year Lao Friends Hospital for Children was picked as the best provider of malnutrition management and care in the entire country. UNICEF and the Ministry of Health asked the team at LFHC to share their knowledge and expertise with all of the 18 provincial hospitals in Laos. This training was a resounding success, and it is already beginning to show results. In just eight years since LFHC opened, it has gone from a dream to a leading provider of free healthcare. None of this would be possible without the backing and support of donors who are vicariously saving young lives with their kindness.

One quote is engraved above the entrance to Lao Friends Hospital for Children.

It reads, “Treat every child as if they were your own.” These are the words of Japanese photographer Kenro Izu who first had the

idea for the hospital when he saw a father lose his son because he could not afford the $2 cost of his healthcare. The LFHC staff embody this quote daily by providing compassionate healthcare to any child who needs it.
