Administration The director of the Secretariat of the Laity, Brother Javier Espinosa is concluding his nine-day workshop in Brasilia, Brazil, this week on Friday, May 5. General councillor Brother Víctor Preciado travelled to Mexico Occidental province on April 26 for a visit which will end on May 29.

Eighteen brothers and laity arrived to the General House to take part in the second Lavalla200> (International Communities for a New Beginning) formation programme, which started April 30 and finishes on July 3. After one week’s orientation in the General House, the participants will then head off to San Martino a Monte, Italy, where the formation will take place. A pilgrimage to L’Hermitage in France has been organised for the end of June, during which Marists will be commissioned by Superior General Brother Emili Turú to be members of Lavalla200> communities. From May 2 to 6, superior general Brother Emili Turú and econome general Brother Libardo Garzón are participating in a meeting with SEDOS on mission and finances in Nemi, Italy. On Tuesday, May 2, two groups taking part in the ‘Senderos’ programme – the English speakers in Manziana, Italy, and the Spanish/ Portuguese speakers in El Escorial, Spain – are meeting together in L’Hermitage, France, for a pilgrimage that will end on May 12. On Wednesday, May 3, Brother Evaristus Kasambwe of FMSI, is taking part in a session of the Universal Periodic Review in Geneva, Switzerland, until May 17. On Friday and Saturday, May 5 and 6, general councillor Brother Michael De Waas and Brother Carlos Alberto Rojas Carvajal, director of the Secretariat of Mission, will participate in the Marist Asia Conference gather in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Process of coordination among Marist entities Encounter of the Marist NGO’s in Rome

This encounter of the representatives of the Marist NGO’s was held in Rome from April 26 to 28, at the General House of the Marist Brothers, and was coordinated by FMSI. Two delegates from each continent came: from America Coco Álvarez and Jimena Grignani, from Europe Javier Salazar and Antonio Tejedor, from Asia-Oceania Manuel De Leon and Allen Sherry; lastly, to represent the voice of Africa, the Marist Religious Henry Uzor (Nigeria) and Fortune Chakasara (Zimbawe) were invited. For FMSI the following participated: Marzia Ventimiglia, Manel Mendoza, Mario Meuti and Álvaro Sepúlveda. The starting point of the work was the plan or project of the activities and responsibilities the idea of which was already mentioned on previous occasions. The objective of the encounter: to place the bases for the creation of a network of Marist NGO’s The program of the meeting foresaw: • the presentation of the preliminary meetings; • the definition of the plan of

activities and responsibilities at local level and of that of the Marist Institute; • the definition of a plan of action for a brief period. The encounter carried on a process of coordination among Marist entities of solidarity and protection of children, promoted by FMSI in 2015 with the meeting of the NGO’s of the Amercan continent in the City

of Guatemala. On that occasion the first draft of the plan of activities and responsibilities was written. That document was developed in the meeting of the European Marist entities which was held in Rome at the end of 2015, and was completed with the contributions or suggestions of the meetings of the Marist NGO’s of Asia and Oceania in 2016 (Brisbane, Australia).

Marist News 475 Brazilian Marist Union (UMBRASIL), addressed the issue during the first day. Using dynamics, he guided the group on how to make the accompaniment model of Jesus of Nazareth their own. Excouncillor and econome general Br Ezequiel Vaquerín Fernández passes away Brother Ezequiel Vaquerín Fernández, of the Compostela province, passed away on April 16, at the age of 92. He had been general councillor from 1976 – 1985, and then econome general until 1993. He was born in Fontihoyuelo de Campos (Valladolid) in Spain. He entered the novitiate in Argentina where he was also provincial of the former Cordoba province. He died in the Residencia Champagnat in Valladolid, Spain.

Final vows: Br. Paul Won, Seoul Br. Paul Won, from the East Asia Province, professed his final vows as a Marist Brother on April 22, 2017 at the Korea-Japan Sector House in Seoul, Korea. The Liturgy was presided over by Fr. Noel Shin, with 2 other priests concelebrating. This very important day in the life of Br. Paul was made more memorable by the presence of his parents, as well as the Korean brothers from the different communities (Sector House, Marist Education Center, Formation House, Chungju, Jecheon and Kobe), friends, benefactors and family members. Incidentally, the Provincial Council of

East Asia had the meeting in Seoul on April 20-21; so all the members of the Council, led by the Provincial Br. Robert Teoh, were also present to witness Br. Paul's perpetual consecration. The occasion became an opportunity for the people in attendance to realize the international nature of the Institute as 6 teachers and 1 student from the Philippines, brothers from Hong Kong (Br. Anthony Tan), from the Philippines (Br. Edgar Ceriales), and from Japan (Br. Yohan Oh), were also around. Fr. Noel gave a very inspiring homily. He challenged Br. Paul to be a candle-

light wherever he goes and whatever he does, and bring the light of Christ to the the world. On the other hand, Br. Robert, in his message just before the final blessing, reminded Br. Paul by quoting the advice of Pope Francis, “First cultivate your interior life and then cultivate the hearts of the young people who come to you.” As a remembrance, Br. Paul presented the attendants an apron and invited them to live like Mary. He said Mary's way is the way of renewal especially as we are celebrating the 200th anniversary of our foundation. The apron is a very appropriate symbol of the Marian face of the Church, he said, and those who receive it would join us to build the Marian face of the Church as MARISTS. After the Mass, the congregation gathered at Marist Education Center next door for a simple fellowship meal. Before joining the Marist Brothers in 2007, Br. Paul worked at a construction company in line with his professional training.

much love.

Walking together towards the 22nd General Chapter Marist educational communities of Rosario Sixty members of the two Marist educational communities of Rosario, Argentina, (School of Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Marcellin Champagnat School) gathered to experience walking together towards the 22nd General Chapter. The meeting took place in a climate of depth, interiority and joy, living moments of great communion inspired especially by the Holy Spirit, in relation to the meetings proposed by the Preparatory Commission. After the three years of preparation for the celebration of the 200 years of the Institute, illuminated by the letters of Brother Emili inviting us to a New Beginning, we began the first stage of the Pre-chapter Process creating new conversations oriented to live indepth the La Valla experience today and contemplating with empathy and merciful eyes the world that surrounds us and

its emerging realities, especially the ones of those less favoured, focusing especially on children, adolescents and young people. Once this first stage culminated, the participants' commitment was to continue with enthusiasm the process in the second pre-chapter stage, entering into the territory of the new, through immersion encounters in the peripheries previously identified. It is about meeting someone or a specific situation of pain to accompany them with discretion, closeness and, above all, with much love. There will eventually be a moment to talk about the immersion meetings culminating in the harvest of the fruits together with brothers and lay Marists of nearby communities and Chapter delegates.
