Chaminade Magazine Founders’ Week Celebrates Community and Service

Aloha, Silverswords have always drawn pride from the resilience, strength and diversity of our 'ohana—our students and graduates, our faculty and staff, our administrators, donors and many supporters near and far. But the COVID-19 crisis has put into sharper focus the importance of this shared support network. While the pandemic has forced us to maintain distance physically, we have been able to come together virtually, emotionally—and even in spirit to ensure we all move forward as one.

True to Chaminade’s mission of public service, the world’s struggle with COVID-19 has also inspired members of our university family to bring their talents to bear to make positive change. In this issue of Chaminade Magazine, you’ll read about a host of Silverswords—students, alumni, and faculty among them—doing what they do best: giving to others to make the world a better place for everyone.

One especially uplifting story ( page 15 ) features aspiring doctor Chloe Talana ‘20, who secured a post-baccalaureate position at the Vaccine Research Center. The facility, led by Dr. Anthony Fauci, is at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and has been on the front lines of the COVID-19 fight.

Chloe deserves the highest praise for securing this prestigious opportunity, but remained incredibly humble when reached by our writer. Asked about her accomplishments, she made sure to thank those who have helped her to get where she is. “I’m grateful for everyone at Chaminade,” she said, “and for Chaminade itself. Without them, I would not have been able to get to where I am today.”

Chloe is one of a number of Chaminade students poised to join the ranks of America’s healthcare workers—whose contributions during this pandemic have moved a nation. In fact, you won’t want to miss the story on page 22 of this issue about a group of recent graduates now seeking advanced degrees to become doctors, pharmacists, dentists or other healthcare professionals.

Four of these students are taking advantage of our articulation agreements with programs at 11 competitive graduate schools, including Boston University, George Washington University and Tufts.

Speaking of students in action, head to page 7 of this issue for a look at an extremely timely class project. Chaminade Biology Professor Michael Dohm wanted to give his genomics students a chance to put their theoretical knowledge to the test on a very real-world problem, so he challenged them to study COVID-19 genome sequences as they became available and then test their hypotheses about the virus.

While the work was challenging—and even more so because students were learning remotely— Dohm said he was there for his students every step of the way to make sure they didn’t get stuck.

Indeed, Chaminade’s commitment to delivering a student-centered education has remained steadfast.

We’ve also worked to let students know our support for them remains unwavering. That was why members of our staff assembled “We Care” packages stuffed with goodies near the end of the spring term and distributed them to students. We’ve got a write-up about this drive-thru event on page 24.

While COVID-19 has certainly dominated the headlines—and our lives—for several months, our strong mission and values continue to guide us. It is in that spirit that the university community gathers annually for Founders’ Week. On page 4, you’ll find a piece detailing how Chaminade faculty, staff and students marked this year’s Founders’ Week with a series of events, punctuated by fellowship and prayer, to honor the Marianist founders Father Chaminade, Mother Adèle and Marie Thérèse.

Shared traditions like these bring our community closer together and underscore our strong commitment to building a better world, one student at a time. Imagine just how much positive change those students—alumni across the state, nation and the world—have made since our own founding.

With one graduate, you don’t have to imagine. Head to page 11 for an engrossing profile on gaming industry executive Holly Gagnon ‘91, a CEO with a reputation for corporate turnarounds, big projects and growth—and who credits her success to engaging her employees and making sure they’re happy.

Gagnon, who has a Master of Business Administration from Chaminade, is the president and CEO of Seneca Gaming Corp. In New York, where she oversees casino properties and a golf course. She’s also become a leading voice in the industry, is a founding member of Global Gaming Women, and was recently named executive of the year by the Native American Finance Officers Association.

The story of her journey to the C-suite, and her strong belief in empowering others, is one you won’t want to miss and a lesson to us all: that the best successes, especially in these uncertain times, are the ones you can share — as a team at work, as a family at home, and for the community as a whole.

Founders’ Week Celebrates Community and Service “LET US THEN COURAGEOUSLY PUT OURSELVES TO WORK, NOT LETTING OURSELVES BE FRIGHTENED

It is in this spirit that once a year, the Chaminade 'ohana comes together to celebrate and honor the three Marianist founders — Father Chaminade, Mother Adèle and Marie Thérèse. The week-long winter celebration incorporates moments of fun, fellowship and prayer — and of course, moments where we “put ourselves to work” to serve our community.

[ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 ] “There’s a strong service component linked to Founders’ Week because of the sense of service that Fr. Chaminade, Mother Adele and Marie Therese had,” says Bro. Edward Brink, vice president for mission and rector at Chaminade University. “After the French Revolution, the main effort was to rekindle the Catholic faith in the lives of people. But for our three founders, faith and service to others are profoundly connected. We can’t be good followers of Christ if we neglect the needs of others.”

This year’s celebration began on Monday, January 20, with Chaminade’s participation in the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March in Honolulu. On Tuesday, Chaminade students gathered to make lei in the Vi and Paul Loo Student Center. That afternoon, Chaminade and St. Louis School joined together for a lei-draping ceremony at the Father Chaminade statue at the entrance to campus.

On Wednesday, Chaminade faculty, staff and students came together at a special Founders’ Day Mass where the Heritage Awards were presented to three outstanding members of the Chaminade community who exemplify Marianist values. The Mass and ceremony were followed by a community celebration lunch in the Mystical Rose Garden Courtyard.

On Thursday, Chaminade volunteers served meals at the Next Steps Shelter in Kaka'ako, and on Friday, students enjoyed lunch while playing Marianist Bingo in the student center.

The week culminated on Saturday at the Founders’ Day of Service, where nearly 30 volunteers from the Chaminade community joined together to work at the He'eia Fishpond in Kaneohe.

Since 2005, Chaminade has helped the nonprofit, Paepae o He'eia, restore the He'eia Fishpond to its original ecological and cultural function.

The partnership brings to light the overlapping values of Marianist heritage and Native Hawaiian culture, and it provides our students with a handson opportunity to learn about spirituality, culture, and the union of the two.

“Community is an important aspect of our Marianist charism, where all have a role in the building and functioning of the community,” says Maimoa Fineisaloi, campus minister at Chaminade. “He'eia Fishpond can teach us how a community works, and how it requires every member to participate.”

The environmental focus is also central to Catholic social teaching and how we care for our communities.

The fishpond is part of an ahupua'a, a Native Hawaiian agricultural land division that ensured communities had access to their entire watershed—from the mountains to the sea. The land they lived on, the mountains they used to grow produce on and the sea they fished in were all interconnected and required cohesive management efforts.

In Catholicism, care of God’s creation is an essential part of Pope Francis’ teachings. “Care for the environment and care for the poor go hand in hand,” says Fr. Marty Solma, the Chaminade University chaplain.

“What harms one harms the other. Our Catholic view is one that keeps the ‘common good’ front and center, both ecologically and economically.”

“Going to He'eia provides students with the sense of working together on a project that benefits others,” adds Bro. Brink. “And it has the added benefit of being rooted in Hawaiian culture.”

2020 Heritage Awardees THREE MEMBERS OF THE CHAMINADE 'OHANA WERE HONORED AT A SPECIAL MASS AS PART OF THE ANNUAL HERITAGE AWARDS. EACH YEAR, CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY RECOGNIZES THREE INDIVIDUALS WHO EXEMPLIFY THE MARIANIST TRADITION ON CAMPUS AND LIVE AND SHARE MARIANIST VALUES. THIS YEAR’S AWARD WINNERS WERE DR. HELEN TURNER, JULIEANN TUPUOLA AND ANDREW TRAPSI ‘20.

The Chaminade Award is given each year to a faculty or staff member who has exhibited a strong commitment to the Characteristics of Marianist Universities and to serving as a champion for justice, love and the dignity and rights of all people in our community. This year’s recipient, Dr. Helen Turner, vice president for strategy and innovation, began her career at Chaminade as the dean of the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Since Dr. Turner’s arrival at Chaminade, she has made tremendous contributions to the university, from updating the “I am a Scientist” curriculum to introducing new degree programs like data science, an MBA in healthcare administration and an MBA in science and technology.

She has also led the way for the Ho'oulu Scholarship program in partnership with Kamehameha Schools. Dr. Turner has an uncanny ability to respond to the needs of our community and does so with great success.

Julieann Tupuola, Chaminade’s facilities coordinator, received the Marianist Award. The award celebrates her tireless and extraordinary efforts to build a collaborative, open and loving community, all while seeking to forward the university’s vision and mission. Julie first came to Chaminade as a student in 2012.

She completed her bachelor’s degree in English

in 2016, then completed her Master of Education degree last May. Julie is known for going above and beyond for the people that surround her. Besides her responsibilities as facilities coordinator, Julie serves as an advisor for the Samoan Club on campus. A student member of the club says, “Julie makes sure we are following our customs of respect and taking care of each other.”

The Founders’ Award is presented each year to a student who has exhibited a spirit of faith, demonstrated a commitment to Marianist values and served as a role model for the Chaminade community. Andrew Trapsi, a biochemistry major who graduated this spring, was the well-deserved recipient this year. Originally from the Bay Area in California, Andrew is active at Chaminade, participating in Campus Ministry and Residence Life. One of his nominators says, “As an R.A., Andrew genuinely cares for his residents. On any given day, whether he is on duty or not, he can be found hanging out with his residents. He takes the time to really communicate with his residents and other students around campus.”

COVID-19 Data Provides

LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS WHEN COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS) FIRST GRABBED BIG HEADLINES IN THE US AND BEGAN TO SHUT DOWN AMERICAN CITIES, CHAMINADE BIOLOGY PROFESSOR MICHAEL DOHM WANTED TO GIVE HIS GENOMICS STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PUT THEIR THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE TO THE TEST ON A VERY REAL-WORLD PROBLEM. HE DREW UP A SERIES OF LESSONS THAT WOULD HAVE THEM STUDYING COVID-19 GENOME SEQUENCES AS THEY BECAME AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE.

Dohm’s students spent the beginning of the term honing their skills in bioinformatics; the process of searching and retrieving sequences from databases, looking for similarities, and then building algorithms to represent evolutionary relationships. The point of all that work? To test hypotheses about diseases.

Because his students were studying virus genomes, Dohm decided to have them apply what they’d learned to the novel coronavirus. Peer into the origins of COVID-19, he told them, and try to sleuth out how the virus that triggered a global pandemic is related to other coronaviruses common to humans.

Dohm said the hands-on work wasn’t just relevant to the moment.

It was exactly what genomic scientists around the world were doing.

“The objective is to provide our students a glimpse into a small part of what Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other experts are doing right now as the spread of the virus continues,” he said.

He kicked off the project after spring break.

At that point, students were learning fully online and regularly communicating with Dohm remotely to talk through their findings.

To unpack COVID-19, his students used bioinformatics software, grabbing sequences from publicly available databases. They also used evolutionary models to estimate rates of mutation in the sequences and then followed the rapid spread of coronavirus worldwide.

COVID-19 genome sequences are being collected around the world, as labs collect patient data, and thousands of samples are now publicly available in databases maintained around the world. “The basic idea of the project,” Dohm said, “is that we are utilizing the rapidly growing number of genetic sequences … to explore how experts can use the sequences to trace the virus’s origins.”

But he also wanted students to consider how the virus was evolving.

Tracking the travel of COVID-19 has been compared to looking at passport stamps.

While the work is challenging, Dohm was there with his students every step of the way, creating worksheets to help his students if they became stuck as they pored over the data. He also had them keep their work for a portfolio to represent not only what they found—but the steps they took to get there.

There are No Boundaries When

PURSUING YOUR PASSION JODI CLARK KNEW BY THE TIME SHE WAS 10 THAT SHE WANTED TO BE A WRITER. “I WROTE A 400-PAGE MANUSCRIPT THAT HAS NEVER SEEN THE LIGHT OF DAY,” SAID THE ENGLISH MAJOR, WHO’S MINORING IN HISTORY AND POLITICAL STUDIES. “I FELL IN LOVE WITH WRITING DIALOGUE AND COMPLEX CHARACTERS.”

Fast-forward a decade and change and Clark is still as inspired by words as she was back then.

The difference? They’re central to her job now, and not just a hobby. In addition to seeking her undergraduate degree at Chaminade online, Clark is a content editor for a small publishing house and a social media manager.

She says that being able to attend class remotely — she lives in Oregon — has allowed her to feel connected to her Chaminade professors and to the university while completing her coursework on her own schedule. “The online program at Chaminade is fantastic because despite weekly deadlines, there are no strict requirements for when and where you have to ‘show up’ for class,” Clark said.

She added the flexibility allows her to arrange her schedule in a way that makes sense for her.

Clark enrolled at Chaminade in winter 2018, after doing research about universities nationwide. She knew that she wanted to opt for an online program because she wished to remain near her family. She was also looking for an institution that honored her religious values and belief in giving back to others.

“After much thought, we decided on Chaminade because of its religious values and because of its location, since the Hawaiian Islands are very dear to my family and me,” Clark said, adding that what’s surprised her the most is how warm and welcoming the university community is — even from afar.

“Even from a distance, the family spirit of the school puts me at ease,” she said, adding that she’s planning to spend her senior year on campus. “My time at Chaminade feels so well spent, and I am looking forward to the day I can visit … the people who have helped me pursue my education.”

These people include Dr. Brooke Carlson, one of her English professors, who has helped Clark learn the “technicalities of writing” and challenged her to think more critically.

Professor Justin Wyble encouraged Clark to take more risks in her writing and Professor Karla Brundage worked with Clark on poetry.

Clark has also brought her own contributions to courses as a “beta reader.”

She works for MaileKai Publishing, where she’s helped fellow Chaminade student Sami Eastwood publish her debut young adult novel, Blackstone Asylum, on Amazon and is in the revisions process for a sequel.

“Sami Eastwood came to me with the idea for Blackstone Asylum as she wrote it,” Clark said. “I provided ideas and advice when and if she needed them. I started providing content editing for the book in about 2018, and by 2019, I helped plot and point out issues in large-scale revisions.”

She said working as a content editor, she enjoys “untangling knots in stories in their earliest stages.”

And her time at Chaminade has helped her become even more adept at that untangling, providing inspiration and feeding her creativity as she works to develop her confidence in editing and writing. “When I was younger, my work ended up being either very formulaic or very scattered,” Clark said. “Thanks to my time in Chaminade’s online program, I feel that I have the tools … to take creative risks and see them through. My degree will be helpful for pursuing a variety of jobs in the writing world.”

Data Science National Competition CHAMINADE’S DATA SCIENCE PROGRAM MADE ANOTHER STRONG SHOWING RECENTLY AT A NATIONAL COMPETITION AIMED AT CHALLENGING YOUNG PEOPLE TO USE COMPUTING FOR POSITIVE SOCIAL CHANGE. STUDENTS AND FACULTY MEMBERS SAY THEY’RE ALREADY GEARING UP FOR THE NEXT CHALLENGE.

Three Chaminade students were among 25 undergraduates from around the country to participate in the most recent Computing4Change challenge in Denver. Over three days in November, participants worked in small teams to use data analysis, computational thinking, and the latest data science tools to see how computing can be a driver for social good.

In this case, they sought to better understand the causes of infant mortality.

Dr. Rylan Chong, a data scientist and postdoctoral researcher at Chaminade, accompanied students to the challenge and a connected data science conference. He said Chaminade has actually sent three separate cohorts of students to the competition since the university launched its data science program in fall 2018 as a first-of-its-kind offering in Hawai'i.

He said the gatherings not only help students apply their learning, but offer them vital opportunities beyond the classroom, from internships to networking that could lead to jobs.

“From a curriculum standpoint, participating in these events, students experience an exciting hands-on opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary team with mentors to make an impact on a real-world problem, interact with a supercomputer and big datasets, and get exposed to and apply the latest data science technologies and approaches,” Chong said in an email.

The challenges, which are sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on High Performance Computing, also give students the chance to stretch their leadership muscles. Chong said Chaminade students frequently serve as leaders in their teams.

Chenoa Faletoi was one of the students who participated in this past year’s cohort. She said the challenge was high pressure — and a great test of her skills. “I would say the biggest takeaway was knowing the difference between data and information,” she said, adding that the competition also solidified her choice to switch to the data science major.

“Data science is everywhere and can be applied in all fields,” Faletoi said. “In my perspective, I have opened up more opportunities. I am not limited to a specific area of work because data science involves technology, and technology is evolving and being incorporated in all fields.”

Student Maria Fratinardo also competed in the challenge.

She said at the end of the three days, she was “super proud” about what she’d accomplished.

“It’s made me realize that I want to be able to use my skills to help people,” Fratinardo said, adding that she’s interested in focusing on applying data science in healthcare. “I’m learning how to find raw data in order to answer questions to problems that we are currently facing.”

Alumnus Takes “Students First” Mentality to the White House SINCE RYAN TAURIAINEN GRADUATED FROM CHAMINADE IN 2010, HE’S RACKED UP A LONG LIST OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS. AT 26, HE BECAME ONE OF THE YOUNGEST PRINCIPALS IN THE COUNTRY. IN 2016, THE WASHINGTON POST NAMED HIM THE “PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR.” AND AS A CHARTER SCHOOL LEADER IN THE NATION’S CAPITAL, HIS STRATEGIES HELPED PRODUCE THE HIGHEST-PERFORMING EARLY CHILDHOOD CLASSROOMS IN THE DISTRICT.

Ryan is also the author of five children’s books and is now a 2019-‘20 White House fellow. But he says despite all the acknowledgment and titles, he still sees himself as a “teacher first.”

And that’s due in part to the approach he started to build at Chaminade that helped him see that improving school culture, building a positive and happy work environment — infused with aloha — and putting people above everything else always produces the best results.

“I definitely believe that I brought a servant’s heart and the aloha spirit back with me to D.C. from Hawai'i,” Tauriainen said, in a recent interview. “Having roots in Hawai'i was a benefit for my education career. Every day, my main inspiration lies in the children I have served and will serve.”

Tauriainen enrolled in the Master of Education program at Chaminade while serving as a Teach for America educator.

During the day, he taught language arts to seventh-graders at Wheeler Middle in Wahiawā. And at Chaminade, he sought to expand his knowledge of secondary education, working alongside professors and his fellow graduate students for insight and support as he worked to sharpen his classroom skills.

His mentors and peers helped him grow as an educator.

And, he said, they provided vital emotional and academic support.

“I appreciated how flexible Chaminade was for graduate students,” Tauriainen added. “I was a full-time teacher while being a full-time student. Being able to do both and manage both was a blessing.”

Tauriainen’s White House fellowship began in August 2019. He works at the U.S. Department of Education, where he reports to Frank Brogan, the assistant secretary of education for Elementary and Secondary Education. And he said among the projects he oversees is $26 million in grant money set aside for Native Hawaiian education programs — an area that he said he’s passionate about. The Oregon native also remains committed to improving opportunities for education — “the great equalizer” — across the United States. “I have seen the benefits of providing an excellent education and I have seen the detriments of failing our students,” he said. “Ensuring an excellent education for every child, no matter their zip code, is the surest way to our more perfect union.”

Employees First HOLLY GAGNON ‘91 HAS A REPUTATION IN THE GAMING INDUSTRY AS BEING AN EXECUTIVE WHO DELIVERS. BIG PROJECTS, GROWTH, TURNAROUNDS. THEY’RE HER SPECIALTIES. BUT WHAT SHE’S MOST PROUD OF AS A CEO ISN’T HER OWN RESUME, IT’S HER COMMITMENT TO ENGAGING EMPLOYEES, HELPING THEM GROW SO THE COMPANY SHE LEADS CAN DO THE SAME.

“I fundamentally believe in the service-profit chain,” Gagnon said during an interview on a recent Sunday—pretty much the only day during any given week when she has a chance to take a breath. “If your team members are engaged and feel included and are part of the solution, it’s an infinitely more profitable organization.”

Gagnon, who has a Master of Business Administration from Chaminade, is the president and CEO of Seneca Gaming Corp. It’s a job she’s held since 2017, and the latest in a successful career as a visionary leader that’s taken her around the country and propelled her to the C-suite in an industry dominated by male executives.

She’s also become a leading voice in the industry, advocating for a personnel-centered governance style that understands the greatest capital a company has is its human capital.

Gagnon has served as the keynote speaker at the Global Gaming Expo, one of the industry’s landmark events; was named executive of the year by the Native American Finance Officers Association in 2016; and is a founding member of Global Gaming Women.

Speaking to Chaminade Magazine, Gagnon said she’s proud of all she’s accomplished as a CEO. But she’s also proud of the other hats she wears: as a mentor, a lifelong learner, and a mom.

All of those roles, Gagnon said, have informed her leadership style—and helped her weather the not-so-good days as well as celebrate the great ones. “I believe it’s been tougher for me,” said Gagnon, talking about her trajectory as a CEO. “But it’s served my benefit. I’ve kind of done the zig zag. I have worked in multiple jurisdictions … the more challenging gigs.”

Today, she runs one of the largest privatesector employers in Western New York, overseeing some 3,600 employees who work at three casino properties and a golf course and attract more than 15 million guests annually.

A C O L L A B O R AT I V E A P P R O A C H TO LEADERSHIP

Gagnon grew up on a farm in rural Massachusetts and made the first big move of her life to go to college. She headed off to Boston to attend Bentley University, where she graduated with a degree in Accounting.

Before too long she’d met her future husband, who was in the military and was picking up to move to Hawai'i.

They’ve since separated, but Gagnon says she’s still grateful for her time in the Islands.

While here, she took a job in health insurance and decided to go back to school for her MBA. Gagnon looked around for a program that would allow her to work full-time while attending classes.

She found Chaminade, enrolling in her first course when she was also a few months from expecting the birth of her first child.

Gagnon juggled it all — and was happy to be in a program that accommodated her busy life.

“I was able to do Chaminade in the evenings and they had a really great program,” she said, adding that she especially enjoyed rich discussions with her professors and peers.

“They had a nice core of students from all over.”

Gagnon said the MBA coursework that resonated with her most was the ethics-centered curriculum. At the time, ethics was rarely an area

of consideration in business schools around the country. But it was central to the curriculum in Chaminade’s MBA program—and still is— and Gagnon still recalls those lessons.

After nearly wrapping up her MBA coursework—she would finish her final credit later—Gagnon moved to Connecticut and started applying to a variety of openings.

That’s when she joined the gaming industry, landing a job as the head of internal audit at Foxwoods Resort Casino. When she was hired, the casino was ramping up to open and she was working 60- to 70-hour weeks. She was told things would slow down once the opening happened.

It didn’t. Those long, grueling weeks continued.

And she loved every minute of it.

Over a period of eight years, the company went from about 2,000 employees to about 10,000.

From Foxwoods, where Gagnon says she got her sea legs in the industry, she went on to hold key executive positions at some of the biggest names in gaming, including Harrah’s/ Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts.

In 2015, she was named president and CEO of Pearl River Resort in Mississippi, where she managed a large-scale rebranding effort and multimillion-dollar renovation. It was a turning point in her career as she became

one of very few women CEOs in the industry.

From there, Gagnon was named CEO for Chumash Casino and Resort Enterprise, where she was named Executive of the Year by the Native American Finance Officers Association.

Seneca Gaming named her president and CEO in 2017. At the company, she’s overseen a $40 million renovation that she’s described as changing “the entire gateway” to Niagara Falls.

It’s a revitalization that Gagnon is proud to say she helped bring to fruition. But when you ask her how she did it, she talks about her team.

She said that she understands that her role requires her to “own her decisions” and make changes quickly if needed. But she relies on her employees, she said, to help her turn ideas into reality, to find the data that will help inform her decisions and, perhaps most importantly, to tell her if they think she needs to make a change.

One recent article in Native Business labeled Gagnon a “calculated risk taker.”

It’s a title she approves of, with a caveat.

“I can have all the great vision in the world.

If I don’t have a team that can execute it, it’s all ideas,” Gagnon said, adding an environment of collaboration, shared accountability and employer empowerment “breeds a more successful outcome.” She quipped, “If you think we’re going in the wrong direction, I expect you to yell.”

SEEKING OUT OPPORTUNITIES

Though Gagnon loves her work, she told Chaminade Magazine it isn’t for everyone.

For one, seeking out executive positions where they arise has required her to move around the country, sometimes venturing into more challenging jobs. “The people who ultimately get the glory jobs tended not to be women back then,” Gagnon said. “I think that there are things that you give up to have the title.”

Every move, Gagnon said, meant hitting a “reset button” in life. New neighborhoods — and neighbors. New doctors. And when her two daughters were younger, new schools. “I feel very fortunate to have these experiences, but I don’t have a forever home,” she said.

“That’s a level of disruption that some people may not be game for.”

She also said that stepping in as a CEO, especially at a struggling company, presents its own challenges.

She has to gain the trust of her employees first, she says, before she takes on big initiatives. That oftentimes means being upfront with them about how things might change while also creating a workplace from the outset that values their opinions. Her message to all her employees: the expectation is “continuous improvement.”

At the companies she’s overseen, she’s instituted special retreats designed to get all kinds of staff members working together to solve problems—and understand the talents each of them bring to the table. “I absolutely believe I am fortunate. I’m even more fortunate to have some amazingly talented people work for me,” she said.

At all stages of her career, Gagnon has also sought to give back with her expertise— and her mentorship.

In fact, Gagnon is the co-chair of the Mentoring Committee for Global Gaming Women.

The organization seeks to help women in the industry network and tap into educational and leadership opportunities. With her committee, Gagnon has worked to bring women from across the industry and across the country together to help them “lean in” and take their careers to the next level.

She’s also volunteered her time to much younger leaders-to-be, helping launch a mentoring program for girls at the Choctaw Tribal Schools.

Gagnon also has taught at the university level, and has kept in touch with many of her former students.

From 2008 to 2010, Gagnon actually took a break from the gaming industry to lecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Isenberg School of Management. She loved teaching casino curriculum so much that her students asked her, “Why don’t you go back?”

She took their advice—and says she’s happy she did.

She said the gaming industry isn’t just dynamic and fast-paced, it’s analytical — like her.

Her advice to young executives is to understand that good leadership isn’t one size fits all, but does share characteristics. “Define the kind of leader you want to be and try to be that every day,” she told Native Business.

Gagnon added that she wouldn’t have gotten as far as she has without lots of support. She’s grateful to her colleagues, her friends and her family. She said they’ve helped her get through tough times and emerge successful.

“I think the one thing I would absolutely tell people is: you may have tough times, but the resilience that it builds in an individual really tees you up for success,” she said.

“Those people who push through adversity, those are skills employers want. You really appreciate what it takes, and you do have more empathy as a leader.”

Student Named to Most Promising Multicultural Class of 2020 CHAMINADE COMMUNICATION SENIOR SOFIA VELA JETTED OFF TO NEW YORK IN FEBRUARY FOR A FOUR-DAY CONFERENCE OF THE AMERICAN ADVERTISING FEDERATION’S MOST PROMISING MULTICULTURAL CLASS OF 2020.

Vela was among just 50 students from around the country selected for the class, a prestigious honor that recognized her portfolio of work and academic accomplishments. A panel of industry representatives from across a host of big-name companies selected the honorees.

The federation launched the Most Promising Multicultural Student program in 1997 to link the advertising industry with top multicultural students from around the country, setting up sit-downs with mentors and recruiters in a bid to create a more inclusive and diverse workforce.

Those selected this year traveled to New York from February 10 to 13 for a packed agenda—with workshops, “industry immersion” opportunities, and the Building Bridges for our Future luncheon.

The students were also treated to a Broadway show: “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.”

Vela said she couldn’t contain her excitement when she’d found out she was selected for the honor.

And the New York City conference didn’t disappoint. “I had no idea that this trip would be so life-changing,” Vela said. “Each MPM student was hard-working and driven. Together, we lifted each other up and created an energy that continues to motivate me, even after returning home.”

All the honorees in the class are minorities and 43 are women. The diversity left Vela inspired. “We were all there for a similar, unspoken reason: to redefine the norm,” she said. “The time to increase populations of multicultural men and women in the workplace is now.”

Vela said she’s now ready to take on just about anything after college.

Whatever her next steps, she knows she’ll have some new peers to share them with. “I made some lifelong friends on the trip,” Vela said. “The students on this trip were all absolutely wonderful.”

Psychology Meets Design INTERIOR DESIGN IS ABOUT SPACE PLANNING, LIGHTING, ARCHITECTURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT. BUT ULTIMATELY, DR. JUNGHWA SUH LIKES TO TELL HER STUDENTS, IT’S ABOUT PEOPLE — HOW PEOPLE LIVE, WORK AND PLAY.

And this year, the associate professor of Environmental + Interior Design (E+ID) at Chaminade took that lesson to new lengths with an innovative collaboration that weaved in key principles of psychology.

For the project, Suh partnered with Dr. Blendine Hawkins, assistant professor of psychology.

Together, they tasked PSY 321: Psychology of Personality students and EID 200: Fundamentals of Interior Design students with working side by side to analyze the character and personality traits of their clients to envision a truly personcentered home — complete with a unique design feature.

And the project had a fun twist: the so-called “clients” were actually characters from “The Office.”

So one group of psychology and E+ID students designed a home for Angela Martin (played by Angela Kinsley), head of accounting on the show and known for more than a few eccentricities, including treating her four cats like her children.

Another designed a living space for Michael Scott (played by Steve Carell), the boss of the paper distribution branch featured in the show who — rather oddly — fancies himself a skilled performer.

The two professors came up with the idea for the project while Suh was visiting Hawkins’ class for a peer teaching observation. Afterwards, the two were chatting and Suh mentioned just how relevant psychology is to the field of interior design, especially when thinking about living spaces.

“Together we came up with the idea that it would be interesting to have psychology and design students collaborate,” Hawkins said, “by bringing the learning from their respective field into a culminating project” and having students from each field serve as experts to their peer counterparts.

The professors launched the project in the fall, both classes coming together frequently to build a foundation of knowledge in psychology and interior design, then to apply what they’d learned and finally to present

their final projects — those client-centered living spaces—at the end of the term.

The psychology students were tasked with “developing a deep understanding” of their “Office” character and communicating that analysis to their design colleagues.

The design students then used the analysis from their peers to develop a living space that truly incorporates their character’s traits.

The professors said the project was a hit with students, who appreciated the chance to learn about another field of study, apply it to their own — and, of course, watch some episodes of “The Office.”

Environmental Science student Noah Lorenzo ‘21 was among the psychology students and said he enjoyed working closely with students from different majors and applying the theories he learned in a concrete way — to a home designed for a client. “My biggest takeaway from this project is seeing that it is possible for two different majors to collaborate on a single project,” Lorenzo said.

He added he’d love to see more interdisciplinary collaboration in other classes.

“It was interesting because I took the class to learn why people act a certain way,” Lorenzo said. “This project was fun because we did just that and applied it to a realistic setting.”

Suh said the interdisciplinary project had its challenges, especially as students sought to better understand their counterparts’ fields of study and incorporate them into their own.

“We were able to witness the benefits of this collaboration,” she said, adding that she and Hawkins also learned a lot along the way— and are already thinking about how to bring their students together again.

Bethesda Bound LIKE MOST SOON-TO-BE COLLEGE GRADUATES, THE

Recognized in Their Field and Awarded Scholarships:

CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND CRIMINOLOGY TWO CHAMINADE STUDENTS WERE RECOGNIZED RECENTLY AT THE “TOP COP” LAW ENFORCEMENT AND SECURITY AWARDS, AN ANNUAL EVENT AIMED AT CELEBRATING THOSE WHO WORK TO MAKE THEIR COMMUNITIES SAFER.

Jesus Moreno, a Chaminade graduate student, was awarded the Anton Financial Scholarship after outlining his studies in criminal justice and detailing what he plans to do after graduation.

Undergraduate student Andres Victoria, meanwhile, took home the ASIS Hawai'i Chapter award. Victoria is seeking his bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Chaminade online.

Both students received $1,000 cash scholarships.

The “Top Cop” awards banquet was held last October at the Ala Moana Hotel. The event is held annually to “promote, encourage and recognize excellence in the field of law enforcement and security in Hawai'i.”

To be selected for the scholarships, Moreno and Victoria also had to submit letters of recommendation and be actively enrolled in a criminal justice program.

Worth noting: Chaminade’s Criminology and Criminal Justice program is the largest and oldest in Hawai'i, and the university offers several degree options for those interested in pursuing careers in the field.

In addition to on-campus programs, students can seek Criminology and Criminal Justice undergraduate and graduate degrees entirely online.

Whether on campus or online, the degree programs prepare students to pursue careers in law enforcement, public safety, criminal justice or graduate studies in law or criminology research.

WORLD OUTSIDE OF CHAMINADE WAS A BIT INTIMIDATING FOR CHLOE TALANA. THE ASPIRING DOCTOR KNEW SHE WANTED TO GAIN MORE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE THROUGH A POST-BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM, BUT THEY CAN BE HARD TO COME BY.

She tried several times, unsuccessfully, to find the right research position and was beginning to feel uneasy. “You put so much into those applications,” says Talana. “And then if you end up not getting in ... to me that’s just not cool.”

Just as she was starting to come up with a backup plan, she got an email from the Vaccine Research Center at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

Led by Dr. Tony Fauci, NIAID has been thrust into the limelight lately as they diligently work to address the spread of COVID-19. Talana’s heart lies in finding a cure to another global pandemic, though — HIV. And it was the HIV vaccine lab that reached out.

“I was just so happy because at least someone noticed me,” beams Talana. “They noticed that I might be of help — and that, to me, is just so rewarding.”

One of Talana’s first research opportunities was through a summer program at Johns Hopkins University, where she studied blood samples from HIV-infected individuals to document how their immune cells function.

After her project, she was one of eight students selected out of a group of 103 to be awarded best poster presentation at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students. She also received the President Sue Wesselkamper Prize for being an outstanding student at Na Liko Na'auao, Chaminade’s annual undergraduate research conference.

“HIV is my favorite virus to study because it’s just so clever in tricking the body so it can use the important components it needs to stay alive,” says Talana. “HIV is just so fascinating to me.”

There’s currently no cure or vaccine for HIV. But the lab at NIAID is studying ways to stimulate a body’s natural ability to produce antibodies to combat HIV, known as broadly neutralizing antibodies.

Given the rate at which HIV replicates and mutates, this type of treatment is widely considered to have the most potential.

When the email came that Talana had been offered the position at NIAID, her initial excitement was immediately followed by fear.

“At first, I actually didn’t want to accept it because my inner saboteur was telling me I wouldn’t be good enough,” confesses Talana.

“But with the help of the Chaminade faculty, I was able to clear my mind. They kept reminding me that the reason I had been accepted was because I could do this.”

For the Farrington High School graduate, this will be her first time living off-island for more than two months — though she knew an eventual move to the Mainland was inevitable with her career goals.

Talana has her eyes set on dual M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. Her time at Johns Hopkins opened her eyes to the powerful work that can be done when research and medicine go hand-in-hand. She got to shadow the principal investigator of her lab, and saw how he would bring blood samples from his patients straight back into the lab.

“I found it so amazing and eye-opening. I want to do that—I don’t want to just be able to care for my patients and treat their symptoms; I want to help them alleviate their pain and suffering by actually finding a cure.”

In between preparing for her move and researching her new home in Bethesda, Maryland, Chloe reminisces about her time at Chaminade.

With COVID-19, her time on campus came to an abrupt halt and her graduation ceremony was postponed to December. Now, she’s not sure when she’ll be able to see her professors again—who to her are more like mentors and friends—and she won’t be able to say goodbye in person.

“I’m grateful for everyone at Chaminade and for Chaminade itself,” shares Talana. “I’ve said this many times before, but without them, I would not have been able to get to where I am today and I’m very grateful for that.”

Among those recognized at the inaugural International Interior Design Association (IIDA)Hawai'i Ho'ohuli Awards: Chaminade University student Jacqueline Harbin.

Harbin is in Chaminade’s Environmental + Interior Design program, the only accredited and degree-granting program of its kind in Hawai'i.

And at the event, she took home the Student Scholastic Award, which recognizes a design student who exhibits a strong work ethic, team leadership and is a strong advocate for the International Interior Design Association.

Harbin was awarded $2,000—and showered with no small amount of praise from her mentors.

To apply for the honor, Harbin wrote an essay about her craft. She also had to be nominated by a faculty member and underwent an interview with an awards committee.

Organizers from the IIDA Hawai'i Pacific Chapter say the awards gala, held at the Prince Waikiki, was an evening dedicated to celebrating “outstanding and original commercial interior design in Hawai'i.”

Three notable awards carry on the legacy of individuals who have provided exemplary service to the Chaminade 'ohana — Bro. Joseph Becker, Rev. David Schuyler and Fr. Stephen Tutas. These awards recognize individuals and organizations who continue to go above and beyond to serve their campus community and carry on the spirit of its namesake.

Bro. Joseph Becker was one of the founders of Chaminade University of Honolulu and was highly regarded as the chairman of the English department. He was known for his humor and bringing the fun to campus. The Bro. Joseph Becker Awards of Excellence are presented each year to Chaminade students who display exceptional leadership through involvement in co-curricular activities. These students embody the characteristics of leadership: initiative, motivation, character, integrity, service and scholarship. They are actively involved in the campus community and contribute their time and energy to the improvement of student and campus life. This year brought two freshman recipients of the award: Jacqueline Martinez and Eri Leong. The sophomore recipient was Josephine Iose, Melissa De La Cruz was the junior recipient, and Cami Naomi Keli'inui received the award as a senior.

Rev. David Schuyler became the fifth president of Chaminade University, after serving the institution as dean and vice president. His career was spent in service to Marianist educational institutions as a teacher, mentor and advisor. The Rev. David Schuyler Advisor of the Year Award is awarded each year to a staff member, faculty member or administrator who advises a student organization and consistently helps identify, encourage and support students in their campus involvement and leadership opportunities.

This person expands the horizons, skills and value systems of Chaminade students through their support and guidance. The 2020 award was presented to professor Hans Chun for his work advising the Korean Club.

Fr. Tutas was a teacher and administrator at Chaminade in the 1950s, and served as the director of the Marianist community in Honolulu. He spent 16 years serving communities in Hawai'i. The Fr. Stephen Tutas Program Award for Excellence recognizes a student program that has demonstrated exceptional creativity, planning and execution and has significantly contributed to the quality of life at Chaminade. This year’s award was presented to Tales & Treats, a service-learning program where students from Luminai O Samoa, Micronesian Club and Marianas Club work with the Hawai'i Literacy Program to teach disadvantaged students the skills of literacy.

Following True Passion to Chaminade and Beyond JENNIFER LAI HIPP BECAME A FORENSIC SCIENCES BUFF IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT SHE NEVER SAW IT AS A CAREER PATH. THAT IS, UNTIL THE COLLEGE PROGRAM SHE WAS IN — STUDYING AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE — WAS PUT ON HOLD.

Hipp, who graduated from Chaminade in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in forensic science, is now pursuing a master’s degree in human biology at the University of Indianapolis and has her sights set on a future in forensic anthropology. She said she’s even considering getting a doctoral degree.

“I took it as a sign I should follow my true passion and knew that Chaminade had one of the best forensic science programs in the country,” she said. “I decided to apply and luckily I got in.”

Hipp said she’s thankful for the strong educational foundation she built at Chaminade, where she thrived with small class sizes and engaging learning opportunities.

“The lab courses at Chaminade are built to give us hands-on experience that we can take into the real world,” she said. “I learned crime scene investigation techniques, including crime scene mapping and photography, latent fingerprint processing, and bloodstain pattern analysis.”

Along the way, she was able to build strong relationships with her professors and her peers.

One of those mentors was Dr. David Carter, director of the Forensic Sciences program at Chaminade.

Hipp said Carter was “integral” to her success at Chaminade — and beyond.

“He helped me with everything from registering for classes and planning out my academic year to giving me advice about careers and applying for graduate school,” she said.

“I was nervous about attending college, but Dr. Carter was always positive and supporting. He was also great to talk to when I needed a break from studying.”

Hipp said that Chaminade’s Dr. Robert Mann also helped her immensely in the program, including by serving as a “source of inspiration” and advice about jobs in the field.

She said Mann even helped her secure internship opportunities and encouraged her to pursue her dream of becoming a forensic anthropologist.

“The faculty of the Forensic Sciences program at Chaminade integrated their work experience in the field into the classroom, which I believe was an important part of my education. They were able to relate the material in the textbooks to the real world,” Hipp said.

“They also worked closely with all the forensic sciences students to create a résumé, critique scientific journal articles, and practice giving professional presentations.”

All that preparation proved key to Hipp’s next steps: seeking a graduate degree in pursuit of a career.

“Being a non-traditional student, I did not have the typical college experience,” Hipp said.

“But I found my professors very easy to relate to and had a wealth of knowledge about both college and the working world.”

For our nine soon-to-be-alumni heading into graduate healthcare programs this fall, these images are shaping their vision of who they want to become. They know there’s never been a more important time to become a healthcare provider.

We’re proud and honored to help them answer this call, and to support them in their dreams of becoming doctors, dentists, therapists, nurses, pharmacists and more. It’s why we recently launched a new MBA track in Healthcare Administration. It’s why we’re launching a new B.S. in Community and Public Health this fall. And it’s why we’ve set up partnership agreements with medical schools around the country.

We currently have articulation agreements with 11 different healthcare graduate schools across the nation, including A.T. Still University, Boston University, George Washington University, Pacific University, Samuel Merritt University, Tufts University, University of Dayton and Western University.

Through these agreements, our students are eligible for early admission provided they meet certain criteria and take certain classes.

These agreements range across the spectrum of healthcare, from medical to dental to pharmacy. Through A.T. Still University, for example, students can choose between osteopathic medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, audiology or dental medicine.

With Boston University and George Washington University, our students participate in their early selection programs designed to be a direct pipeline into their medical schools. Some time in their sophomore or junior year, they enter into

an agreement with the university. As long as they meet all academic requirements, they are provisionally accepted into the university’s medical school upon graduation.

Four of our students are taking advantage of these programs this fall, and 19 of our graduates are currently enrolled in one of the programs.

We’re also a member of The Leadership Alliance, a consortium of 32 academic institutions dedicated to addressing the shortage of diversity in graduate schools and academia. Through the program, we’ve built partnerships with universities that want to admit our students into summer research programs. Our students have participated in programs at Harvard, Yale, Purdue and UCLA– to name just a few. This early exposure to research greatly enhances a student’s graduate school application, particularly for medical schools.

It’s no surprise that Hawai'i ranks No. 1 in healthcare. It takes a certain kind of person to become a health provider. Someone with compassion, heart and patience–all values that go hand in hand with our island culture.

Healthcare is the perfect complement to Chaminade University’s mission. As a Marianist institution, we educate our students to embrace adaptation and change, family values and community service–core components of our healthcare system. And as a liberal arts school, we ensure our graduates have a wide breadth of knowledge and are able to think critically across a range of disciplines.

Alumna Travels to Samoa for Humanitarian Mission IN LATE 2019, A TEAM OF MORE THAN 60 HAWAI'I HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS TRAVELED TO SAMOA WITH LT. GOV. JOSH GREEN TO ASSIST WITH A MEASLES CRISIS THAT HAD KILLED DOZENS OF PEOPLE, MOSTLY CHILDREN.

Chelsea McKee ‘14 was among the 55 nurses who volunteered for the humanitarian mission, putting their own lives on hold to help with the massive vaccination and public health effort.

“I felt this was an opportunity to help others in need,” said the Chaminade Nursing graduate, an oncology nurse at the Queen’s Medical Center and clinical adjunct at the University.

McKee said while she traveled to Samoa to give her time and medical expertise, what she didn’t expect is just how much she’d gain in return.

“On our daily vaccination visits, people welcomed us with hugs, laughter and a lot of food,” she said.

The group from Hawai'i was charged with vaccinating tens of thousands of Samoa residents in hopes of stopping the spread of the preventable disease.

McKee said doctors and nurses hit the ground running.

They started their days early in the morning, heading out to neighborhoods with vaccines and supplies. “A local nurse, a co-worker and I vaccinated over 360 people on our first day there,” said McKee. “The nurses made an assembly line in the van to prepare the syringes and gauze, draw up the vaccination, and ... administer. Just as fast as you could imagine vaccinating 10 people we would go onto the next house and the next until the evening.”

McKee is no stranger to public health nursing.

In fact, she had her first experiences serving the community with healthcare needs as a student at Chaminade. When she was seeking her degree at the university, she was able to travel to the Philippines and the Big Island on public health missions.

“In the Philippines I had the opportunity to work in the hospital setting, live with a family in a rural mountain community where we performed health screenings, learned about alternative medicine and much more,” McKee said.

“These experiences I gained from the nursing program exposed me to public health.

By volunteering, I gain so much more than I can give.”

McKee was on the Samoa trip with another Chaminade Nursing graduate: Chandler Arce ‘16, a psychiatric nurse at the Queen’s Medical Center.

Speaking recently, McKee said she’d jump at the chance to help more families in Samoa.

“I still remember on the drive back to the airport thinking, I only hope we made a difference,” she said. “We hope we made an impact and prevented more deaths.”

Students who pulled up to the Chaminade campus were greeted by a group of Chaminade staff and faculty members cheering them on and giving words of encouragement. They were directed to pull up to the distribution table, where they were handed a care package full of hot meals, breakfast foods, fresh fruits, baked goods, snacks and more through their passenger-side window.

“With COVID-19, we have to be creative and find new ways to show our students that we care about them, and we miss them,” says Allison Jerome, Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students at Chaminade University.

For some students, this was the last time they got to see Chaminade faculty and staff before graduating the following week. “I’m so grateful that they took the time to put on this event for us,” says Theresa Dao, a soon-to-be-Chaminade-graduate and biology major. “It’s been really hard having to finish out my senior year without seeing my Chaminade 'ohana, so it was nice having a chance to say goodbye, even though I could only wave from my car. I’m really going to miss them.”

Chaminade plans to reopen campus in the fall, and their official graduation ceremony has been postponed to December 14, 2020.

Mahalo Scholarship Luncheon THE MOST REWARDING PART ABOUT GIVING IS SEEING YOUR DONATION IN ACTION. AS MORE THAN 70 DONORS WITNESSED ON FEBRUARY 20, A DONATION TO CHAMINADE HAS TANGIBLE BENEFITS AND CHANGES THE LIVES OF OUR STUDENTS.

Each year, the Mahalo Scholarship Luncheon brings together donors who have supported our scholarship fund with students who have received a scholarship. It’s an opportunity for the students to thank their scholarship donors personally, and let them know just how much their support has made a difference in their educational journey.

“When someone gives to our scholarship fund, they’re not just making a donation,” says president Lynn Babington. “They’re transforming a student’s life, and often the entire course of a family.

Many of the recipients are first-generation students and they depend on these scholarships.”

The event started with an oli from the students to the donors.

Following, the students draped lei on the donors in gratitude, and then sought out the individuals who created the scholarship they received to join them for lunch.

Leslie Blount attends the event each year representing the Richard T. and Leslie N. Blount Scholarship for military students and dependents.

The scholarship was established by her late husband, Richard, right before he fell ill. “This event is one of my major highlights,” says Leslie. “I just love interacting with the students. They never cease to impress me with all of their accomplishments and I’m just so grateful that they are living my husband’s dream. It gives me such joy to know that his wish to help students connected to the military is being fulfilled.”

Chaminade University has more than 100 scholarships that have been generously established by individual donors and foundations.

Many of them are endowed, and several are renewable investments that are replenished each year. This year alone, our students received nearly $2.3 million in donor-funded scholarships.

Ke'alohi Canady, a fourth-year business administration major and first-generation college student from Honolulu, spoke firsthand about how much her scholarship has impacted her time as a student.

“I am beyond grateful and so fortunate to have been awarded a scholarship,” said Ke'alohi. “I’m really lucky that I don’t have to struggle or work crazy hours just to finance my education. It allows me to have a sustainable work-study-life balance, meaning that I can devote my time to soaking up all the information in my studies. I was able to have this opportunity because of you all.”

Edward Adachi, a third-year environmental science major, spoke to the individual transformation he has undertaken while at Chaminade.

He was raised on the island of O'ahu by his maternal grandmother, and he has always sought to become a person who would make her proud.

“I came to college thinking I had life all figured out,” he began his address to the room. “I had made a list in high school of what college I wanted to go to, what degree I wanted to pursue, how I would obtain my career and what I would do in retirement—at the age of 18, I had 50 years planned out. My friend once told me, if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans. Well, God must have been rolling on the floor when he heard mine.”

Edward entered Chaminade as a business administration major.

Within the first year and a half, after rethinking that decision several times, he finally landed on environmental science. He’s now planning a graduate degree in public health, and looks forward to a career educating communities across the Pacific on how to be healthy.

His time at Chaminade has introduced him to a world full of possibilities and opportunities. He has met friends from all over the world, from all walks of life, and he’s traveled to the Mainland and throughout the Pacific. He also discovered his faith at Chaminade, and now identifies proudly as a Roman Catholic.

“To be at a school that is so dynamic motivates me to be just as dynamic,” said Edward. “To live is to change. Thank you for changing my life, and the lives of all of our students.”

Chaminade Magazine sat down with Dr. Burton to learn more about her background, teaching and experiences, and about her heartfelt decision to leave a legacy to Chaminade.

Dr. Burton, please tell me about your professional background, and about your education as a clinical psychologist.

I am a clinical psychologist with a three-year post-doctoral training in systems theories and family therapy. As I began my career in the early 1980s, my great interest was in the burgeoning field of whole systems thinking.

My interest was guided by the idea that everything is interconnected as part of a greater whole. This led me on a decadelong journey to discover how this thinking applied to individuals, families, communities, organizations, societies and to the planet as a whole. On this journey, I gained an understanding of the relationships between the new physics, psychology and the world’s great spiritual and religious philosophies, which seemed to provide a new way of thinking about the emerging issues facing humanity and the planet as a whole. It was a time of great enlightenment when many leadingedge thinkers were finding a language that could give voice to this new paradigm and its application to the field of psychology.

Can you say more about what you discovered on your search?

If I may, I would like to answer this by mentioning some of the new paradigm solutions I participated in with the hope that they might serve as a springboard for others in their own search for answers.

How does your background on the new paradigm relate to some of the experiences we are facing now?

In the early 1980s, I encountered many leading edge ideas through my professional career. I taught at Antioch University in Seattle; I trained with Bill Mollison, the founder of permaculture, at the Chinook Learning Community (now the Whidbey Institute) and I studied cooperative economic systems at The Schumacher Institute.

Out of these experiences, I began researching and editing an EarthBank economic newsletter which became the EarthBank Guide to Sustainable Economics and included one of the earliest directories for socially responsible investing. As a result, I was asked to become part of a group to convene the first North American Bioregional Congress (NABC) with the goal of launching a non-political Green Movement. I was trained by a Native American elder and Quaker in consensus decision making to help facilitate the 200 attendees in coming to consensus on the principles and values of this movement.

As my thinking expanded to finding solutions for planetary governance, my interest began to shift toward peace-making, and this led to my participating in a search for common ground intensive between those who wanted peace through armament and those who wanted peace through disarmament. The common ground that came out of that dialogue was the need for security and communication.

This took place just before the birth of the telecommunications revolution. This intensive was part of the training I received to become part of one of the first citizen diplomacy trips to the Soviet Union in the mid-1980s.

This trip became an extraordinary experience of recognizing our common humanity. Like many others at that time, I was becoming a global citizen learning to think globally and act locally, and experiencing and helping to birth a new world that was coming into existence.

When did you start teaching at Chaminade?

After living in Seattle and in the Bay Area, I moved back to Hawai'i. It was in the early ‘90s when I became part of the adjunct faculty at Chaminade focused on teaching graduate psychology courses in the Master of Science in Counseling Psychology program.

Why did teaching at Chaminade interest you?

From the very start, I could feel a sense of graciousness and community at Chaminade.

I loved teaching at Chaminade, the smaller classes, the students who were—and are—so interested in what they were learning. I realized that this sense of community came from deeply felt values that informed both the educational programs and the Chaminade community itself.

attending Catholic church, I was seeing intact, healthier families. Having searched for answers to family problems as a psychologist for 40 years, it was like coming into the promised land. Through studying the history of the Catholic Church, the lives of the Saints and the progress of civilization divinely inspired by those following a Catholic path, I realized that here were answers I wanted to support, and here was a direction that made sense to me and that could provide answers for society in the future.

How did you decide to become a member of the Legacy Society and participate in the Planned Giving program at Chaminade?

Tell me about your experience with the Chaminade values.

The values have been palpable in my experience at Chaminade. The five values include educating for formation in faith as the complement to reason and intellectual rigor; providing an excellent education of the whole person that also embraces cultural diversity; education that fosters the development of community that is felt as a “family spirit”; education that serves the common good with its applications to peace and justice in the larger world; and education for adaptation and change that acknowledges Father Chaminade’s wisdom that “new times call for new methods.”

These values really do encapsulate the Chaminade experience.

Yes, they really do. The five values of Chaminade inform the way we teach. They are, in a very real way, an expression of the “new paradigm” that I have always wanted to experience and that led to my own transformation over the last few decades.

How has your experience with the five values transformed your life?

To actually be a part of a fully developed spiritual and educational community with students so eager to learn, with a sense of the family spirit in the psychology department, with the welcoming Marianist Brothers and their programs, all contributed to enriching my life and deepening my own development. Yet an even greater transformation occurred as a result of my connection to Chaminade.

It started with my attending a lecture in 2015 at the Mystical Rose Chapel on a Montessori-based Sunday school program called the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

Attending the lecture inspired me to take the 90 hours of training in order to learn and experience this Montessori method.

This experience further led to my attending Catholic Church and Mass and, along with my deeply meaningful experiences in the Chaminade community, led to my becoming Catholic. I was becoming whole, as the word Catholic signifies, and my life was becoming more sacred, more connected to the Divine, to the Christ, and to my desire to be of service to God. Yet, it was when I began reading and studying the Catholic social teachings that I found answers to society’s problems that made sense to me at a larger level. In

When I first started thinking about planned giving, I was given some good advice, which guided me to answer the question, “who do you want to thank?”

That led me to ask a second question: “whose work and vision do you feel in alignment with and want to support? As a psychologist, my own journey to find solutions to the problems of individuals and society has included becoming familiar with the primary teachings, philosophies and practices of the world’s major religions.

The life lesson I learned from this search was that without some kind of moral or ethical or spiritual or higher philosophy, the mind can gradually become more and more outer driven in a way that affects human behavior and which, in turn, can create systemic problems. Yet when reconnected to our whole selves and its deeper wisdom and compassion, we can find solutions to problems and live in greater health and wholeness.

To me, Chaminade represents this kind of solution that is grounded in both the higher moral values of the Marianist community and that offers an education of the whole person.

The evidence-based, best-practice graduate programs at Chaminade serve real human needs and are helping to create a positive future for individuals, families and society.

Giving to Chaminade became a major way I could help build a better world. This was how I came to my decision to include Chaminade University in my estate plans and to leave a planned gift to Chaminade.

I want to offer my deep and heartfelt thanks to Chaminade University’s divinely inspired community and for the many ways it has enriched my life and the lives of all those it touches. Virtual Hogan Entrepreneurial Graduation OVER 50 STUDENTS, PARENTS, MENTORS AND FRIENDS ATTENDED THE HOGAN ENTREPRENEURIAL PROGRAM GRADUATION CEREMONY ON APRIL 29. TYPICALLY HELD ON CAMPUS IN THE MYSTICAL ROSE ORATORY, THIS YEAR’S CEREMONY TOOK PLACE ONLINE VIA ZOOM DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS.

The ceremony celebrated the accomplishments of Chaminade students who have spent the past one to two years participating in the community service projects, academic coursework, mentorship activities, networking events and weekly lectures that are hosted by the Hogan Entrepreneurial Program. Funded by the Hogan Family Foundation, the Hogan Entrepreneurial Program provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to become successful entrepreneurs, with an emphasis on community service. The program’s motto is “doing business things that make social sense and doing social things that make business sense.”

“As we do every April, we look to this celebration as a time to recognize the most important players in this program, and that’s you, our students,” said Dr. Webster. “You’ve heard me say before, our aim is simple: it’s to give you, some of Chaminade’s best students, the knowledge, skills and motivation to start new things.”

The celebration began with a prayer from Brother Edward Brink, Chaminade’s rector and vice president for mission. Next, Dr. Lynn Babington, president of Chaminade University, welcomed all in attendance and offered well wishes for the graduates who were moving on to the next leg of their journey.

The ceremony continued by awarding students from each class year with the Outstanding Student Awards, including juniors Elijah Abramo and Yoshlinda Note, and seniors Isabella Tessitore and Natalie Burton.

Charlie Clausner took home the Outstanding

Graduate Student Award, and Esther Patterson took home the overall Outstanding Hogan Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Charlie Clausner was also one of two student speakers who shared spoken-word poems they had written to inspire and uplift, joining fellow graduate Fabian Patterson.

Dr. Babington also had the pleasure of introducing the next director of the Hogan Entrepreneurial Program, as Dr. John Webster will be retiring in June following 18 years of service to Chaminade University.

Dr. Roy Panzarella will begin his role as director of the Hogan Entrepreneurial Program on July 1, 2020. Dr. Panzarella most recently served as the vice president of operations at Alaka'ina Foundation Family of Companies.

He is the former general manager of Lockheed Martin in the United Arab Emirates and retired from the Army as a Colonel after 33 years of service. He will be stepping down from his role as vice chair of the Board of Regents at Chaminade University to join the Hogan program.

“I’ve known Roy Panzarella for a number of years, and have long been convinced that he would provide the leadership that you would expect from the Hogan program,” said Dr. Webster. “He has the values and the heart to make you, and Chaminade, proud of your program.”

Congratulations to the 2020 Hogan Entrepreneurial Program graduates. As Dr. Babington said, “You are our future, and we have great hope and high expectations for all of you.”

Serving Science THROUGH SOMETIMES, PLANS CHANGE. SOMETIMES, YOU

ENTER COLLEGE KNOWING EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT

TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP—AND THEN YOU LEAVE ON A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TRACK.

At least that’s what happened to Jerlisa Arizala ‘04.

The Saipan native had always had her eyes on becoming a pediatrician.

Her first step was to get into a good university. But Saipan is fairly isolated, and her parents didn’t want her to travel too far.

Chaminade offered the perfect balance — a high-quality education that was relatively close to home, and an island lifestyle similar to the one she was used to. When she visited, she fell in love with the atmosphere.

She felt the academic presence, but knew it would be a place where the community would support her and offer help if she needed it. She also really liked the diversity she saw on campus.

And her experience did not disappoint.

“My college experience was one of the best experiences of my life,” says Arizala. “I think Chaminade was the perfect place to feel comfortable being yourself because it was such a big melting pot.

Everyone was so different and had an interesting background. It felt like everyone was accepted.”

One of the things that struck her right away was the diversity.

For the first time, she realized just how many ways there were to be an American.

“It stood out so much to me that there were a lot of students from other U.S. Territories who were also American,” she remembers. “It was really nice to see all of the different definitions of American in one place.

It wasn’t what a typical mainland experience would have been like.“ She started Chaminade as a biology major on the pre-med track.

That’s how she met biology professor Ron Iwamoto. Not only was he her advisor, but he also taught a few of her classes. He noticed right away that she had a talent for writing.

“As my professor, he was able to look at my strengths and communicate what those were to me,” recalls Arizala. “He told me I was a good writer, and I should pursue some sort of writing career. And he told me I could do that within academia.”

It was through his guidance that she was inspired to pursue research instead of medical school. She also decided to add on an English minor.

It provided a nice balance to the heavy biology classes, and it helped her develop her writing skills.

When she graduated in 2004, she went on to earn an M.S. in Biological Science from California State University Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. in molecular biology and virology from City of Hope.

Sometimes she still thinks about becoming a pediatrician, but she never follows through because she really likes where her path has led her.

She’s found that her ultimate goal was always to help people, and she can do that through research.

“I’ve learned so much about how to help people,” she says. “I have no regrets about the track I took. I know there are groups that need help, and I can help them through science.”

Arizala is a cell biologist at Kite Pharma, a subsidiary company of Gilead Sciences, Inc., and couldn’t be happier. The research coming out of Gilead represents everything she stands for — she loves how they want to give to the community and make sure everyone has access to drugs they need. Gilead Sciences is known for its antiviral drugs used to treat HIV. They have also made the news for their promising COVID-19 treatment that is currently undergoing clinical trials, Remdesivir.

Arizala’s expertise lies in reengineering T cells, a type of lymphocyte, or white blood cell, to attack and kill cancer cells. It’s a developing treatment for certain types of lymphomas and leukemias, and her company was responsible for the first T cell lymphoma treatment product to be approved and released on the market.

Her work is something she holds very dear to her heart. It’s a source of pride, and she finds it very rewarding. “Working for Kite Pharma is a great way to make a direct impact on a cancer patient’s life,” she says. “I help them have a better quality of life by allowing them to live longer and eradicate their cancer.”

Arizala credits both Iwamoto and Chaminade for the impact she’s had on others. If it weren’t for Iwamoto’s guidance, her educational path would have been very different.

In fact, their relationship came full circle right around 2012 or 2013.

She was finishing up her Ph.D. at City of Hope, a world-class cancer hospital in Los Angeles. He was there as a lymphoma patient, receiving a transplant.

“We had dinner together and he met my husband,” she recalls. “It was the last time I saw him in person.”

Though they are in different states now, she still keeps in touch with her professor—he sends her updates of his grandchildren, and she sends him updates about her children. He’s also served as a reference, and helped her get into graduate school and get her first job.

Her time at Chaminade not only fostered her passion for science, but it also taught her to recognize her strengths and embrace who she is.

“Going to a school that was very warm and friendly taught me to be that way with others,” says Arizala. “It taught me to be genuine and to keep my morals.”

As a female and as a minority in the sciences, that has come in handy. She recognizes the responsibility she has in paving the way for others and has been able to stay true to herself and always represent where she is from.

“Chaminade prepared me to be a role model,” says Arizala. “Not only in building my passion in science, but also by building my character.”

WORKING ON THE

FRONT LINES It’s Monday, and Ann-Janin Bacani arrives at work around 8:15 AM She covers herself head to toe in personal protective equipment (PPE), and heads into the lab.

The Chaminade alumna checks each coronavirus testing swab that arrives—it’s essential to enter them into their database before proceeding. She ensures they each have proper approval from the state epidemiologist, and then she gets to work.

Each coronavirus test swab is analyzed for the virus through a lengthy process.

First, the RNA is extracted from the virus.

Then, it is converted to DNA. Finally, using a real-time, reverse transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) machine, the DNA is copied and amplified to identify the presence of 2019-nCoV genes. If the genes are present, the test is considered positive.

Bacani is a microbiologist in the Biological Response Section of the Hawai'i State Department of Health’s Laboratory and Preparedness Response Branch.

Initially, she worked with the Food and Drug Administration to test food samples for salmonella and listeria. But when COVID-19 hit in January, Bacani’s lab was the first in the state of Hawai'i to be approved to analyze test results.

At first, it was nerve-racking. There was a lot of initial uncertainty and risks. So much about the disease was unknown. But the department was quick to react.

“I was fully trained by highly trained microbiologists in my section and we were

provided with the proper PPE to work the virus,” says Bacani. “That put my mind at ease while working in the laboratory.”

As part of the Biological Response Section, Bacani is part of a team of epidemiologists, physicians, microbiologists and officials from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration tasked with providing rapid response to bioterrorism, infectious disease outbreaks or any other public health emergency.

Their COVID testing lab serves all of Hawai'i and many of the outer Pacific Islands as well. Bacani sees it as a chance to serve her community.

“It has always been my vision and goal to be able to give back to my community,” says Bacani. “From my early years at Chaminade University, I have wanted to provide and bring quality care to underserved populations.”

Bacani graduated from Chaminade University in 2018 as a biochemistry major with a minor in psychology.

She attributes a lot of what she does now to her time at Chaminade. It was through a Chaminade classmate that she initially found the position at the Department of Health— Alexis Young, another Chaminade alumna, is also a microbiologist at the department.

A graduate of Waipahu High School, Bacani was introduced to Chaminade University at a college fair field trip.

Her dream was to become a pharmacist, so she chose Chaminade for the highly regarded STEM program.

Her next four years were filled with leadership roles, clubs, research opportunities, premedical summer programs, travel to conferences and more. And while she didn’t always recognize it at the time, everything she learned was preparing her for her role today.

“Turns out, a lot of the things we all thought we wouldn’t need to know were things we later found to be very helpful,” she admits.

Perhaps her biggest lesson was understanding just how important it is to follow precise laboratory techniques and best practices—for a patient relying on a diagnosis, it can be life-changing.

“The human aspect of a clinical sample is more than just the volume in a tube,” says Bacani. “It’s the impact that the sample has that is important, which makes all of what I do as a microbiologist worthwhile.”

And the impact of what she does every day is not lost on her.

“Our job is so meaningful right now, as it is an essential task that allows people to know whether or not they have contracted the coronavirus,” explains Bacani. “It is so important to understand the precise laboratory techniques, tests and best medicinal approaches that allow for a patient’s lifechanging diagnosis.”

While she has been honored to serve her community on the front lines of this pandemic, Bacani’s ultimate goal is still to become a Doctor of Pharmacy. She’s humbled by the power drug interactions can have on a patient’s life, and wants to become a clinical or hospital pharmacist. She plans to start at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy at University of Hawai'i at Hilo in the fall.

Dr. Choy received the Pat DeLeon Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hawai'i Psychological Association. Choy specializes in the identification, assessment, treatment and prevention of child maltreatment. He was the founder and director of the Child Protection Center at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children for over 30 years before his retirement and appointment to the Hawai'i School of Professional Psychology.

Dr. Magpantay-Monroe was presented the 2020 Weingarten Leader of Leaders Award by the National Student Nurses Association. The award is given to a dean, faculty member or state consultant who goes above and beyond to support nursing students.

Magpantay-Monroe was nominated for the award by her Chaminade student.

Dr. Allison Paynter | PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH Dr. Allison Paynter wrote a short play consisting of no more than 150 words about the novel coronavirus that was accepted for inclusion in The Coronavirus Plays: A Project Created by the One-Minute Play Festival, America’s largest and longest-running grassroots theater company.

Dr. Grabowsky was interviewed by KITV News regarding the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and how the shelter-in-place order, due to COVID-19, for to reduced humanity’s impact on the earth.

Dr. Perrault was featured as a thought leader for News-Medical and Life Sciences discussing her research into using Multidimensional Gas Chromatography to achieve odor profiling of postmortem microbes. Perrault also wrote a blog article for chemistry magazine LCGC North America discussing her experience of teaching online in her field during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Hill co-authored the article “From Braemar to Hollywood: The American Appropriation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Pirates”, an exploration of how today’s popular culture pirate tropes can be traced back to Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel Treasure Island. The article was published in the journal Humanities.

Dr. Philhower received the Professor of the Year Award from the Hawai'i Psychological Association.

Philhower has a diverse professional background that includes working in public health environments, outpatient community mental health programs, private practice, school consultation, and education.

Dr. Kandel was selected for the 2020 Ronald M. Iwamoto Teaching Fellowship. Kandel will hold the title of Iwamoto Fellow for two years. The funds from the fellowship support professional development, including attendance at conferences, workshops, innovative curriculum development or leadership in education training.

Dr. Suh received the 2019-2020 Father John F. Bolin Excellence in Scholarship award, which recognizes full-time faculty who have made notable academic and professional contributions to Chaminade University. Suh challenges her students to see the relationships between architecture and the urbanscape with sustainable, interdisciplinary and techdriven design strategies.

Dr. McNally was interviewed by Hawaii News Now regarding the effects COVID-19 has on tourism in Hawai'i. McNally was also featured on Hawaii Public Radio to discuss the effects COVID-19 has had on the global economy as well as Hawai'i’s economy.

Dr. Trevorrow was interviewed by KITV4 regarding a bill that would require public high schools to start no earlier than 8:30 AM. Trevorrow previously published a paper that supported an increase in hours of sleep can promote student health and well-being and academic performance.
