pportunities await at Chaminade.

Chaminade prides itself on being a small, focused liberal arts institution. But our educational offerings are anything but tiny. In fact, students have a buffet of exciting choices as they pursue a bachelor’s degree, from study abroad opportunities to international internships. Just ask Matthew Southard. an International Trade major who recently graduated. As a student, he traveled to China as part of the Hogan Entrepreneurial Program, a premier experience for Chaminade students aimed at equipping them with new business skills and extensive connections. “Chaminade is a wonderful opportunity for students,” says Southard. He adds that the trip, his first outside the country, was eye-opening. “I realized there’s a lot of competition out there. You’re not only competing with people here in Hawaii and the U.S., but you’re competing against people internationally. That motivated me to better myself and to make sure my skills are on par with everybody in the world.” Chaminade students have been taking Hogan trips to China for more than 13 years, and have been going to India for eight years. The China trips feature internships, and

both experiences include networking opportunities, company visits and tours of cultural sites. Southard now dreams of moving to Hong Kong. His international aspirations, he says, are all thanks to the opportunities he was able to take advantage of at Chaminade.

“ What Chaminade offers that is unique is the diversity of its enrollment. Having the ability to rub elbows with people from all over the world is critical in the field of International Trade. This is something that many mainland universities cannot offer.” Matthew Southard, International Trade

If Hyo Park was charged with writing a slogan for Chaminade, he would keep it simple. “Chaminade cares.” That’s why he’d recommend the school to prospective students. And it’s why he’s grateful he chose Chaminade when he was interested in pursuing a degree in biochemistry. “The professors take the time to know you and offer support beyond the walls of the classroom,” Park said, when asked why he’d encourage others to consider Chaminade as they figure out which school is right for them. “People say it is due to small class sizes, but I think Chaminade has cultivated this environment where people are supportive of each other.” At Chaminade, Park adds, he was able to grow into his own. Early on, he found a mentor who challenged him to think critically and “stimulated my curiosity.” Park went on to serve as a lab assistant, a role in which he built on his scientific skills and his leadership ones. From there, the opportunities just kept coming.

Park spent a summer helping underserved populations through a UCLA School of Medicine program. He received a grant from Chaminade to attend a conference, where he met with members of the admissions committees from medical schools around the country. And he spent a summer studying zebrafish embryo at the University of Maryland, and then received a Chaminade travel grant to present his award-winning research at a conference. Park’s work at Chaminade landed him a spot at the George Washington University School of Medicine. He applied to the program through Chaminade’s early admissions program, available to students pursuing health professions. When he was accepted, he realized just how far he’d come. “Chaminade,” he said, “has given me the confidence to succeed in the real world.”

And that’s regardless of which sport you’re playing — or cheering for. Basketball and soccer. Cross country and volleyball. There are 10 sports offered at Chaminade, and they all compete in the NCAA Division II Pacific West Conference, squaring off against 14 schools in California, Hawaii and Utah. Ever seen a silversword? They’re a breathtaking — and rare — Native Hawaiian plant that can live to be more than 90 years old. In their lifetimes, they flower just once, sending up a spectacular stalk before scattering their seeds to the wind. At Chaminade, Silverswords stand for good sportsmanship, for personal responsibility and for valuing each other’s unique attributes and strengths. We know the actions of each student-athlete, each staff member, each fan reflects on the whole, and so we’re committed to building a supportive community for intellectual, spiritual and personal growth. We’re proud to wear the blue and white. We’re proud to be Silverswords.

To students, that means hands-on, community projects aimed at improving people’s lives. It means making a difference — and learning along the way. It means getting experiences — life experiences, educational experiences — that offer opportunities for growth and reflection. Our students serve as mentors in neighborhood

They offer free tax preparation assistance to low-income families. They learn, not only by doing — but by helping.

Our professors are leaders in their fields. They’re pioneers. They’re innovators. And they’re here to help you find your academic spark, whatever your educational and career goals are. At Chaminade, you’ll learn from people like Dr. Helen Turner, an internationally-regarded researcher in molecular immunology. From people like Yukio Ozaki, MFA, whose works in ceramic and wood are on display in museums locally and internationally. And from people like Dr. Katelynn Perrault, a forensic scientist known for her work analyzing the chemistry behind the odors that scent detection canines target. The best part: unlike those big schools where it’s so easy to get lost, Chaminade ensures small classroom sizes — and stresses mentorship, collaboration and project-based learning. Our student-faculty ratio is just 11-to-1. And our faculty members believe strongly in the power of personal experience. In other words, they want you to learn by doing, whether you’re in the lab, in the studio or interning at a company.

Madison Choi at University of Virginia for the Leadership Alliance summer research program.

For writer Madison Choi , there’s nothing quite like seeing your byline on a published article. Choi, who graduated from Chaminade in spring 2018 with a double major degree in Communications and English, was selected by the Society of Professional Journalists for a 10-week internship at Honolulu Civil Beat. While there, she’s written stories about everything from disaster preparation on Oahu to a new homeless shelter to bicycle safety. The opportunity would have never been possible, she said, without Chaminade. Choi initially enrolled in Chaminade’s nursing program, but then switched to English and Communications after a lot of thinking about what she really wanted to pursue in life. After making the change, she was grateful for the relationships she’d already built with professors — professors who helped connect her with key leadership and academic opportunities.

2 3   C H AM I N A D E U N I V ERSITY OF HONOLULU

One such opportunity: The summer before her senior year, Choi was recommended for a Leadership Alliance summer research program at the University of Virginia. It included prep talk about graduate school, mentored research projects and conference presentations. In a word, Choi said, it was “transformative.” And it was all thanks to Chaminade faculty who believed in her and helped get her there. “Looking back, I wouldn’t have had half the opportunities if it weren’t for being surrounded by professors and staff who were rooting for me and really knew my academic goals,” she said. Choi has sought to pay that support forward by living Chaminade’s strong commitment to public service — first as a student and now as a graduate. “The Chaminade community knows,” she said, “you can only make a difference when you put others before yourself.”
