Aloha, Over the summer, the nation celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

It’s hard to believe that it was a half-century ago—on July 20, 1969—when Americans of all ages gathered around their television sets to watch a grainy live feed of astronaut Neil Armstrong taking that improbable “giant leap for mankind” to become the first man to set foot on the moon.

All these years later, Apollo 11 continues to show us what’s possible when many work together toward a shared goal—however impossible it may seem at the outset. Apollo 11 reminds us what we are capable of despite the odds. And it makes the case for always thinking big.

Those are lessons we take to heart at Chaminade, where our Marianist values drive a strong social service mission and commitment to individualizing our educational experience for each student. That is what defines us as we strive to remain a university of excellence and innovation.

And earlier this year, Chaminade accomplished a moon landing of its own: the successful completion of the university’s ambitious, 10-year Bridges to the Future fundraising campaign.

Over the course of the campaign, Chaminade exceeded its goal to raise $100 million—raising $118 million in the single most successful fundraising campaign in the university’s history.

Bridges to the Future went directly to programs aimed at ensuring student success, including: • The doubling of our endowment, and the creation of 46 new privately funded scholarships.

• The renovation of all major buildings on Chaminade’s campus.

• The establishment of 70 clinical partners for our School of Nursing.

• Intensive advising efforts to support the only four-year graduation guarantee in Hawai‘i.

Bridges to the Future was only possible because of your incredible support of our mission.

We couldn’t do what we do without you—and the scope of your generosity is truly moving.

In this issue, we are so proud to recognize this year’s extensive list of Honor Roll donors.

We are also elated to introduce two talented new members of our leadership team: Dr. Lance Askildson, provost, who comes to Chaminade from Kennesaw State University in Georgia; and Dr. Rhoberta Haley, dean of the School of Nursing and Health Professions.

We are looking forward to what they bring to our already robust learning community, where innovative opportunities for student success abound—opportunities like the data science institute, highlighted in this issue, in which students explore issues facing Hawai‘i using complex datasets.

Indeed, everywhere you look on campus, you’ll find members of our Chaminade ‘ohana— administrators, professors, staff and students—setting their sights on big goals and then setting out on journeys to achieve them. Those dreams for tomorrow are how we fulfill our mission today.

Building Bridges to the Future IN JULY 2008, BROTHER BERNARD PLOEGER, THEN EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND PROVOST OF CHAMINADE AND SOON-TO-BE PRESIDENT, ORCHESTRATED A UNIVERSITY-WIDE STRATEGIC PLAN THAT FOCUSED ON GROWTH AND RENEWAL. WITH IT CAME BRIDGES TO THE FUTURE, THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN IN CHAMINADE’S HISTORY. THE GOAL: $100 MILLION TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS.

Fast-forward to a beautiful on-campus capping reception on April 23rd of 2019. Amidst the perfectly manicured landscapes, Spanish Missioninspired buildings, laughter of old friends and clinking of toasting glasses, hung a banner: $118 million raised.

We had done it. And not only had we met the goal, we surpassed it. The campaign raised $118 million through private gifts, grants and public funding.

The atmosphere at the Bridges to the Future end-of-campaign reception was euphoric.

The hard work, dedication and incredible support of our donors had made history. The entirety of the Chaminade ‘ohana had come together for one purpose: to support our students.

And our students can tell. They feel the impacts of the campaign every day, all around campus.

Through the Bridges to the Future campaign, we were able to double our endowment to create even more scholarships for students and build robust retention programs to ensure our students are successful once they arrive on campus.

Brittney-Ann Eugenio Mendoza, a senior and business administration major, was born and raised in Honolulu. She knew she wanted to come to Chaminade—the small class sizes and one-on-one attention from professors spoke to her. But it was expensive and she was nervous about the cost.

Then Chaminade offered her a scholarship, and everything changed.

“I applied to University of Hawai‘i and Chaminade,” says Mendoza. “When I found out about the grant from Chaminade, I was like okay, maybe Chaminade is saying that we want you. It was the best decision I made, coming to Chaminade.”

Mendoza has always been shy, but Chaminade helped her come out of her shell. Through Campus Ministry, she was able to build more relationships and be more open to people. “Now I can say I have friends in all the majors here at Chaminade.”

The Hogan Entrepreneurial Program also helped her break out of her comfort zone. She learned how to network and build business connections. Now, she feels like she has the tools to be successful.

But her favorite part of Chaminade comes every January, during the lei making and draping ceremony of Founder’s Week.

“Making a lei representing the entire community is really nice. It’s a way to thank Father Chaminade for giving us this close-knit community,” says Mendoza. “Even though we’re a small school, Chaminade has a big impact on the students that come here, and for that I am forever grateful.”

Funds from the Bridges to the Future campaign supported faculty development—like the newly rejuvenated Center for Teaching and Learning, which ensures our professors have the tools, training and support they need to guide and mentor a new generation of leaders.

The most life-changing experience that Nicole Sagapolutele ’19, double-major English and psychology, had at Chaminade came from the undergraduate research program.

The program gave her the opportunity to explore her passions, build connections with professors and travel across the nation to present at conferences.

In her senior year, Sagapolutele partnered with professor Justin Wyble to explore how Hawaiian history is often inaccurately depicted in American history textbooks.

Wyble and Sagapolutele quickly developed a strong bond. Sagapolutele was struck by how Wyble gave her the freedom to explore her own interests.

“He taught me that you can do research on anything you want even though it’s something that not everyone knows. You shouldn’t be afraid to do a research topic that interests you just because you’re not sure how it will be received.”

The mentorship impacted Sagapolutele so much, she nominated Wyble for the 2019 President Mackey Prize, an award given each year to a professor who goes above and beyond for their students. He won.

While her goal has always been to become a high-school teacher, her mentorship with professor Wyble now has her considering a doctorate degree and teaching at the university level. Sagapolutele started Chaminade’s Master of Arts in Teaching program this fall.

With one in 10 students participating in Chaminade’s NCAA Division II athletic teams, funds from the Bridges to the Future campaign went a long way to ensure our athletes could perform their best both on and off the field.

April 23, 2019 was a big day at Chaminade. Not only did it bring our ‘ohana together for the Bridges to the Future capping reception, but it also marked the grand opening and dedication ceremony of the new

Silversword Athletics Training Center and Locker Rooms.

Participating in athletics as a student is no small feat. Our student-athletes wake up before sunrise for practice. They spend hours upon hours in the gym or on the court. They miss vacations and weekends. And they do it all while staying up to date on lectures, working on group projects, writing papers and studying for exams.

The Silversword Athletics Training Center and Locker Rooms, a product of the Bridges to the Future campaign, goes a long way toward not only keeping our student-athletes safe, but letting them know they are an important, wellrespected part of our community.

“The athletics community has changed,” says senior Isabella Tessitore, business administration major and volleyball player.

“With these new locker rooms there’s a lot more attention and focus on athletics, which is really nice to have.”

Tessitore is one of 87 Chaminade athletes who made the Academic All-PacWest team in 2019 for having a GPA of 3.0 or higher. In fact, 12 of her 15 women’s volleyball teammates also made the list. And they did it right after having a record-breaking season in 2018, making the program’s first NCAA West Regional appearance since 2004.

Grabowsky has also benefited from the scholarship opportunities offered by the center, including research stipends and fellowships. “I published a paper with a group of faculty about experiential learning, and that was the result of a fellowship from the center.”

“It is a wonderful place that I can’t imagine not having,” says Grabowsky. “It is such a help to us professors—and that, of course, affects the quality of our teaching.”

Bridges to the Future allowed us to renovate nearly every major building on campus, and design state-of-the-art facilities like the new Center for Teaching and Learning to support faculty professional development.

Anyone who has taken a class with Dr. Gail Grabowsky, Chaminade professor and director of the environmental program, can tell you just how dedicated she is to her students.

“Dr. Gail can really make learning fun,” says Hoano Rosario, a senior and environmental studies major. “She doesn’t just teach it— she lives it.”

For Grabowsky, a big part of teaching is being able to connect with colleagues through places like the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Through the center’s meetings and workshops, she has learned a tremendous amount about what her colleagues were doing in their classrooms.

Recently, she participated in two threeday summer workshops. “Both were aimed at teaching professors the best practices for engaging and successfully teaching Pacific Island students,” says Grabowsky. “Both resulted in me changing some assignments and some approaches to my courses.”

The Bridges to the Future campaign helped support community service opportunities for students, like the tax clinic that our accounting students offer to low-income community members.

Tyler Cartaino ’19 came to Chaminade as an undecided major from California. He ultimately declared his major in accounting.

“One thing I think a lot of people don’t realize about Chaminade is how involved they are in the community,” says Cartaino.

Throughout his time at Chaminade, he had ample opportunities to participate in our numerous service-learning projects.

“In just about every course I took, Chaminade offered a service-learning opportunity,” says Cartaino. “It’s a way for you to go into the community and apply what you’ve learned in class through volunteer work.”

One project he became intimately involved with was the Hawai‘i VITA program.

Once a week on Monday evenings, he’d join his professors and classmates to offer a free tax clinic to low-income individuals in the community.

“We filed federal and state income taxes for free,” says Cartaino. “It’s really cool to see people come in. You’re doing them a service and it really helps people.”

But perhaps the most unusual project Cartaino became involved with was Caring Crocheters. For the six-foot-six-inch basketball star, crocheting was a bit outside of his playbook.

“I never once thought I’d be crocheting a baby blanket for a military family,” Cartaino says with a smile. “But I found myself going

to my room after class and crocheting for an hour or two. I’d also bring my crocheting on flights when traveling to games.”

Cartaino’s ability to balance his academic accomplishments, extracurricular activities and athletic victories paid off. He was named the Pacific West Conference’s scholar-athlete of the year for men’s basketball for the 2018–19 academic year, and returned to Chaminade in fall 2019 as an MBA student to play his last year of eligibility.

Meet Our New Provost LANCE ASKILDSON WAS VICE-PROVOST AND CHIEF INTERNATIONAL OFFICER AT ONE OF GEORGIA’S LARGEST UNIVERSITIES WHEN HE WENT LOOKING FOR A NEW OPPORTUNITY. HE HAD ONE MAJOR CRITERION: HE WANTED TO WORK AT AN INSTITUTION THAT LIVED A STRONG SOCIAL JUSTICE MISSION— AND DIDN’T JUST PAY LIP SERVICE TO IT.

He found that institution at Chaminade University of Honolulu.

On July 1, Askildson officially started as Chaminade’s new provost—and was quickly buried under a tower of lei. In a recent interview, he joked that the showering of aloha made it tough to stand up straight.

“I had so many lei on,” he said, “I feared I would fall over if I bent down to pick something up.”

Askildson said he’s been touched by the warm welcome, but also recognizes change is never easy. His predecessor—Dr. Helen Whippy—retired after holding the position for just under six years.

“Although no one has truly voiced this to me directly,” Askildson told Chaminade Quarterly, “I suspect there is some trepidation with the change in leadership in the Provost’s Office.”

That’s why a major focus of what he’ll be doing during his first six months as Chaminade’s chief academic officer is what he calls “active listening,” speaking to just about everyone he can—from students to professors and staff to community members —to better understand the university’s unique opportunities and potential challenges.

“I am trying to be very accessible and open so everyone can get to know me a bit better and see that my values and vision align very well with the values and vision of the Chaminade ‘ohana,” he said.

Above all, he added, he feels honored to be a part of a “transformative institutional mission.”

Askildson comes to Chaminade from Kennesaw State University, a public institution with two metro Atlanta campuses and 35,000 students. In addition to serving as vice-provost, he held a tenured faculty position in applied linguistics, and made certain to teach at least one course a semester.

Over 15 years in higher education, Askildson has also held leadership and academic roles at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Arizona. At Notre Dame, he was an assistant provost in addition to founding and heading up the institution’s Center for the Study of Languages & Cultures.

“I am ‘all in’ with Chaminade and I want people to know that I will be working right alongside them…”

Askildson has also published extensively in academic journals as an interdisciplinary scholar of second-language acquisition, served as principal investigator for a long list of funded research projects, and is active in the field’s professional organizations, including the International Association for Language Learning Technology.

Askildson’s applied linguistics lens has come in handy since moving to the islands as he seeks to learn more about Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander culture and language.

Askildson’s wife, Virginie, also has an extensive academic background in linguistics (and the couple speak French at home with their eightyear-old son).

While Askildson officially started in his position in July, he began dropping by campus shortly after arriving on island to meet with leadership, professors, students and others.

On one occasion, he had the chance to swing by a ceremony for those who completed the university’s certified nurse aide training institute.

The program included Chaminade students, those from other universities and healthcare workers seeking additional credentials.

What Askildson was struck by was what they all—independently—agreed on.

Chaminade’s social service mission is more than just words, they told him; it’s lived— through the curriculum, through the university’s programs, through the students themselves.

Askildson said that commitment to service—and to building better communities— not only drew him to Chaminade, but continues to excite him about what the future holds.

“I moved myself and my family halfway across the world—sold all of our major possessions, purchased a home and started a new life in Honolulu—because I believe in this institution, its people and its leadership,” Askildson said.

“I am ‘all in’ with Chaminade and I want people to see and know that I will be working right alongside them as we move this university forward into a bright future.”

Askildson said his priorities as provost include bolstering recruitment and retention programs, encouraging innovation across the institution and looking for ways to ensure faculty members and others have opportunities for professional development and research.

He said he sees a number of opportunities for “strategic enrollment growth”—or growth in areas that meet university and community needs.

For example, with the right outreach he believes Chaminade could strongly appeal to more non-traditional undergraduate students. And he said the university is in an excellent position to expand its graduate programs, international program and non-degree offerings.

“We need to be looking at alternative educational credentials (badges, certificates and stackable credentials toward a degree) as well as adult learners and non-traditional student populations (at least for Chaminade) such as international students, early-career professionals,” Askildson said.

He added that demographics locally and nationally make clear that Chaminade should broaden recruitment efforts to more than recent high school graduates to “thrive in this increasingly competitive environment.”

Askildson takes on Chaminade’s provost role at a time of significant flux for U.S. universities. Institutions of higher learning across the country are facing increasing pressure to make their “value proposition” clear, convincing students (and parents) that the degree is worth the money and the time.

But Chaminade is on solid footing when it comes to making that argument, Askildson said, thanks to the university’s strong liberal arts tradition, Marianist mission and comprehensive suite of supports aimed at ensuring student success.

Also on his priority list: in the coming months and years, Askildson wants to work with alumni and others to raise Chaminade’s profile locally and nationally—and promote its strong social justice mission.

But in the meantime, Askildson is embracing his new role and learning a lot along the way.

In a memo to the university community on his first official day on the job, he wrote that while he understands that he comes to Chaminade with a wealth of experience and expertise, he also sees himself as a lifelong learner “and one who is eager to grow and cultivate my skills.”

That means he intends to approach new opportunities for innovation and advancement “with a deliberate mindfulness” of Chaminade’s history and values—and how they inform day-to-day operations at the university.

“We have many opportunities and challenges before us,” he said, “and it is my intention that we will navigate these with careful discernment and a collaborative spirit.”

You Can Never Have Enough Data KOBE YOUNG NEVER REALLY UNDERSTOOD DATA SCIENCE. “I HAD NO IDEA WHAT DATA SCIENCE WAS,” SAYS THE SECOND-YEAR BIOCHEMISTRY MAJOR FROM MO‘ILI‘ILI. “I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST THE UTILIZATION OF NUMBERS AND DATASETS.” As he realized at the Summer Institute in Data Science Program at Chaminade, he was partially correct. But there’s so much more to it than that.

“After doing this program, I’m able to see the real details in programs and visualizations and really big data sets—I didn’t understand the size and power of it before. Numbers really can show a lot of things and trends over time.”

Young was one of 21 Chaminade students and one visiting student from Guam who participated in a month-long partnership program between Chaminade University and the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC).

Together with his classmates, Young spent four weeks researching a topic of his choice by collecting data, analyzing the data, translating it into usable and meaningful information and then presenting it to the group.

The program was fully funded by the National Science Foundation’s INCLUDES grant called Supporting Pacific Indigenous Computing Excellence (SPICE). The grant was jointly awarded to Chaminade and TACC, and provided students with generous one-month stipends to cover housing, travel and expenses.

“Data is power,” says the program’s leader and dean of the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Chaminade, Dr. Helen Turner. “This program is about putting complex data, and the skills to handle it, in the hands and heads of young people from the Pacific.

With these skills they can contribute solutions to regional problems such as climate change and health disparities, and promote new economic development to fight poverty.”

Young knew he wanted to research a topic that related back to his Hawaiian culture.

“Coming from Kamehameha Schools, I wanted to incorporate these native Hawaiian values that I have and taking care of the land and our responsibility.” He already knew a bit about carbon emissions and fossil fuels, so he decided to investigate how renewable energy sources could reduce fossil fuel emissions in ground transportation in Hawai‘i.

By accessing open-source datasets, he was able to look at the number of cars that passed through certain intersections in Hawai‘i and pinpoint the areas with the most traffic and congestion. He then created a complex matrix to compare that information with datasets about air quality, temperatures, gas prices and the number of cars leased as rentals versus those registered to Hawai‘i residents.

He wasn’t very surprised to find that there was a correlation between the population of O‘ahu and gas prices.

“Over the course of time, more people means more demand, so prices increase,” he says. “Fossil fuels are limited and aren’t renewable; I think that’s why the world is looking more at renewable energy sources.”

There was one thing that did surprise him about his results, though. “The correlation with the rental population and the permanent population was really surprising,” says Young.

“The tourists contributed to air quality in a negative way, which was interesting to know.”

While Young was drawn to his cultural connection to the ‘aina, Chenoa Faletoi chose to focus on the health of her community back LEARN MORE

in American Samoa. The third-year biology major explored key factors that contribute to diabetes in the Samoan population.

“Being that the diabetes rate in American Samoa is much higher than in the U.S., I wanted to see what key factors contributed to that,” says Faletoi.

Ultimately, she discovered that although hypertension, obesity and fast food don’t cause diabetes, they definitely contribute to the high rates of diabetes in American Samoa, and can make the disease even more severe.

For Faletoi, the institute sparked an interest that she’s eager to continue. “As I was looking more at my research after I had finished my presentation, there are other aspects of my data that I would like to pursue. I want to look more into life expectancies and access to healthcare for Native cultures,” she says.

As Dr. Turner points out, “The institute doesn’t end here—several students will start as majors or minors in Chaminade’s new data science degree program, the only one of its kind in the Pacific, in fall 2019.”

Faletoi is a testament to that. After the institute, she signed up for another four-day data science program in Chicago, and she was offered an internship with the Texas Advanced Computing Center to continue her research on healthcare access for Pacific Islanders. She’s also considering adding a minor in data science.

Faletoi sees endless opportunity in the field of data science. “Research is indefinite,” says Faletoi. “You’ll never have enough data.

There’s still more out there.”

“My time at Chaminade was wonderful, and laid the basis of a satisfying educational experience,” says Rick Zirzow. In 1967, Zirzow left Chaminade to finish his undergraduate degree from George Mason College at the University of Virginia in 1969. He entered the Navy as a Naval Air Cadet, reporting to Pensacola, FL in May of 1970. After an early discharge (Honorable) he completed his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1978 at Virginia Tech. Zirzow worked at the National Institutes of Health, first in medical neurology and then in neurological and developmental diseases and stroke, completing 35 years in 2008. Currently he is enjoying spending time with his three adult daughters and seven grandchildren, living in Northern Virginia.

Current Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard surprised Retired Chief Lee Donohue during the 200 Club awards ceremony by inducting him into the department’s Hall of Fame on May 15, 2019. Donohue spent 40 years at the Honolulu Police Department, seven of those as chief of police. He retired from the department in 2004 and now serves as President of the Honolulu Police Community Foundation.

Haskin is keeping busy and is on the board of Mountain Shadows Support Group, a nonprofit in San Marcos, California that provides homes and services for the intellectually disabled. She and her husband have five children and nine grandchildren.

Roy Randall Haskin B.A. CHEMISTRY ’69

Haskin is the founder and CEO of the organization Nanobiologics Research Corporation. He developed a proprietary IP nanosizing technology that allows for multiple applications within the hemp industry.

Haskin founded the first ISO-certified testing laboratory for cannabis in the United States, Cannasafe Analytics, LLC, in 2012. Haskin and his wife Carol (Kendrick) Haskin ’69 live in Murrieta, California.

Elise Johnson B.S. CRIMINAL JUSTICE ‘85

Elise Busch Johnson has owned and operated Busch Investigations Inc., a full-service private investigation firm, for twenty-two years.

Since earning her B.S. in Criminal Justice in 1985, she went on to become one of the first female licensed investigators in the State of Hawai‘i. She’s featured in the June 2019 issue of Hawai‘i Business Magazine. Her highlight cases include locating missing children, counterfeit merchandise seizures, undercover surveillance and most recently, she assisted federal counsel with a high-profile public corruption trial. She resides in Hawai‘i Kai with her Chaminade college sweetheart, Joe, and her two children, Paris and Spencer.

Congratulations to Harry Soria on the 40th anniversary of Territorial Airwaves. The voice of Hawai‘i’s longest running radio show, Soria has kept the music of Hawai‘i’s past alive for current and future generations. His weekly show preserves and shares vintage Hawaiian, or hapa-haole, music recorded between 1915 and 1959. On June 4, 2019, Soria was on Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox, where he talked about the rare recordings he has saved.

2000s Dr. Anton Shufutinsky B.S. BIOLOGY ’00

Anton Shufutinsky, a health scientist, earned his second doctorate, a Ph.D. in Organizational Development, from Cabrini University in Radnor, Pennsylvania. His doctoral research was focused on wounded warriors and their transition and integration into post-military corporate positions.

Prior to this, Anton had earned a doctorate in health science, and a master’s degree in public health. He spent over 20 years on active duty and has since worked in corporate positions and has been writing independently.

Welcome Dr. Rhoberta Haley DR. HALEY JOINED THE CHAMINADE ‘OHANA AS DEAN OF THE SCHOOL OF NURSING AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS IN MAY 2019.

When Dr. Rhoberta Haley came across the job posting for dean of the School of Nursing and Health Professions at Chaminade University, she knew instantly it was the right fit.

“It felt like it was a blessing,” says Haley. “I think Chaminade is a great university.”

What first attracted her was the Chaminade mission and its commitment toward advancing and serving underrepresented communities and populations.

“I love the emphasis on social justice and serving vulnerable populations. Chaminade has a wonderful mission, and nursing is a really good fit for that mission. It’s just a very nice synergy.”

Throughout her career, Haley has seen firsthand how nursing can transform communities. “A degree in nursing can be lifechanging, especially if you are the first person in your family to go to college. When you become a nurse you have that healthcare knowledge, and that benefits your family, neighbors, friends and communities. You serve people everywhere you go.”

She was also drawn to the fact that Chaminade has an incredibly diverse student body. Just last year, Chaminade was listed as having the highest percentage of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students in the nation, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. Haley believes nurses should represent the people they take care of, and starting with a diverse group of students is essential. “We need men and women, people from all kinds of ethnic and racial backgrounds to inform how we care for patients.”

Haley brings with her 40 years of experience in nursing and nursing education, including from academic leadership positions in California, Nevada, Illinois, Indiana and Arizona.

She sees a lot of potential at Chaminade. Amongst her highest priorities: partnering with community healthcare groups to see where Chaminade can add value, and growing the program offerings within the School of Nursing and Health Professions. She also sees an opportunity to grow the current simulation center and develop even more experiential learning opportunities for students.

“Luckily, we have a really strong faculty. They’ve been here; they’re experienced nurses and educators.” To Haley, that’s critical.

“You want to have a core group of faculty that understand the university and the mission and are really dedicated to our students.”

She’s excited to work with the faculty this fall to build a comprehensive plan and vision for the school driven by research, community and regional needs, employer demands and partner support.

“We’re positioned in a really nice way. We’ve already started a really good nursing school and it’s been successful,” says Haley. “This is the time to start adding programs and growing, and offering more to our region.”

The Gift that Keeps on Giving When Leslie Blount and her late husband Richard Blount sat down to discuss the future of their estate, Richard had one request: he wanted to set up a scholarship fund for people affiliated with the military. They had no children of their own, and Richard attributed his extensive life experiences to his education and his time in the service.

Richard first realized the importance of education when he joined the military. Without a college education, he wouldn’t have become an officer.

If he hadn’t become an officer, he wouldn’t have become a fighter pilot.

As a veteran of Vietnam, he knew that path had saved his life.

When they told their financial advisor and friend about the scholarship idea, she encouraged them to consider Chaminade and invited them to a donor luncheon.

“At the luncheon, they started talking about the small student-toteacher ratio at Chaminade. I turned to my husband and said, ‘Did you hear that? Your money is going to do the best here,’” says Leslie.

That was the beginning of the Richard T. and Leslie N. Blount Scholarship for military students and dependents at Chaminade University.

When Richard got sick, Chaminade worked quickly. “I can’t say enough good things about the team,” says Leslie. “They set this whole scholarship up in record time so that when Richard passed away he knew there was going to be a scholarship in his name.”

Leslie is grateful that their gift has helped some incredible students, like recent graduate Antonio Bonnetty.

“Antonio once wrote me a letter about how the scholarship has affected his life, and that was just amazing to me,” says Leslie. “It made me realize that this kid is living the dream that Richard had.”

Bonnetty graduated in 2019 with a double major in environmental studies and criminology and criminal justice. He never considered himself much of a student, but Chaminade helped him realize his potential was so much more than athletics. He started at Duquesne University’s School of Law this fall and has aspirations of being elected into office.

“Richard would be absolutely over the moon to see someone like Antonio go on to law school,” says Leslie. “If Antonio goes to The White House one day, you can bet he’ll have my vote.”

But perhaps the biggest takeaway for Leslie is the relationships she’s made.

“The biggest bonus of all is that I got to meet so many wonderful people and I got to be friends with them,” says Leslie. “Richard’s scholarship gives me a gift, too.”

PULSE Program WE RECENTLY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO CHECK IN WITH TWO CHAMINADE GRADUATES WHO SPENT THE LAST YEAR IN DAYTON, OHIO WITH THE MARIANIST PARTNERS IN URBAN LEADERSHIP, SERVICE AND EDUCATION (PULSE) PROGRAM. CHARLENE ROCIMO ’18 AND PONO RIDDLE ’18 SPENT ONE YEAR VOLUNTEERING FULL TIME AT A LOCAL NONPROFIT AND LIVING IN COMMUNITY WITH OTHER RECENT GRADUATES FROM MARIANIST UNIVERSITIES IN A LOW-INCOME NEIGHBORHOOD IN DAYTON.

Where did you work and how did it prepare you for the future?

Charlene: I was given the position as volunteer coordinator at Brigid’s Path, a local nonprofit that worked with drug-exposed newborns and their mothers. I had an opportunity to shadow one of the doctors and one of the nurse practitioners and they asked me a lot of questions about what I wanted to do. When I was applying to medical school, they also helped me write my personal statement and prepare for my interview.

They made me feel like whatever happens, there were a lot of people supporting me. I was accepted into medical school at A.T. Still University in Arizona for fall 2019, and Brigid’s said they want me to go back when I do my residency. They said they would be able to give me a spot at Dayton Children’s Hospital.

It was very humbling.

Pono: I worked at Empowering Children with Hope and Opportunity (ECHO), a faith-based organization that works in local schools and provides social emotional services for students and their families, and empowers them with skills for life, violence prevention, emotional management, family advocacy and crisis case management. As a psychology major, I wanted to eventually be a school counselor or

mental health counselor. I realize now that it’s important for the education system to have agents of change, so I recently changed my focus to education. In October, I’ll be starting a Masters in Education with an emphasis in educational leadership at Chaminade.

How did this program help you grow as a person?

C: This was the longest I’ve been away from Hawai‘i. It definitely helped me become more independent. I practically didn’t know anyone in the beginning. Learning about different cultures from my housemates made me grow a lot. I’ve met so many Marianist brothers and sisters in that area, and I commend them for their compassionate sense of helping people.

They really made me feel like I was at home.

P: It was my first time living outside of Hawai‘i. It was quite a change. I had to figure out, okay, where can I go get my hair cut?

How far is work going to be from home?

Am I going to encounter traffic? Just kind of navigating and driving on the mainland kind of freaked me out a little bit, especially in winter. I really grew up a little bit more. I had to totally embrace a whole new environment and really develop into my own. It was all about: how can I take what I’ve learned and

apply it and influence others with that aloha spirit? I feel like I was really able to flourish.

I really made Dayton like my second home.

Would you recommend the PULSE program to others?

P: Oh definitely, yes. Absolutely. Just the sense that you are part of a collective group working toward the same thing and making an impact in the community, you really live out the Marianist charism. All you’ve been taught in your four years at Chaminade, now you get to live it out in the real world and apply it to those on the margins. Everyone I worked with was very supportive and wanted to learn more about Hawaiian culture and where I’m from. I didn’t have to explain the aloha spirit; the aloha spirit was present in Dayton and I definitely felt that. It was definitely an experience that I would not trade for anything.

C: If you’re open-minded about it, yes. Staying true to yourself is a big factor you have to keep in mind. I don’t regret doing a service year. It gave me the ability to be more confident in myself, and more confident in networking. The Marianist PULSE program is a program based on faith, and that’s one thing that I truly value.

It has really helped me prepare for any next steps I have to go through in my life.
