Communities are sometimes based on where you live or where you work. But communities can also form in other ways — around a common goal or a set of values. And while the Chaminade community may have first centered on our Kaimuki campus, it’s grown much bigger than that. These days, its members congregate not around a shared place — though we love our university grounds — but around a shared mission. The members of our tight-knit community are scattered across the globe. But wherever they live, they believe in Chaminade’s central aim — to educate tomorrow’s ethical leaders, preparing them to seek out ways to change the world for the better. The strength of our community is nowhere more evident than in the annual Honor Roll of Donors — a testament to not only the generosity of so many individuals, families, foundations and businesses, but a showcase of the unwavering support for our institution. And there is much to be supportive of. Over the last year, we’ve made significant progress at Chaminade, kicking off the construction of new facilities, incubating and celebrating innovation, seeking out new avenues for growth and welcoming new faces — along with familiar faces into new roles. Our work would not be possible without the gifts of all sizes that you see in the pages of this issue. It is the generosity of our community that endows scholarships, funds research, supports student athletics and ensures Chaminade can continue to meet its mission. Indeed, our donors are to be thanked for helping to ensure Chaminade continues to provide students with an excellent private education. Hawaii’s Best-Kept Secret As a child, Terry Walsh ’93 was fascinated with surfing. Magazines, videos, photos—he couldn’t get enough. The sport called to him. There was only one small problem: he lived in landlocked Michigan. But problems are meant to be overcome.

“My grandparents had a cabin on Lake Michigan,” says the president and CEO of Catholic Charities Hawai‘i and Chaminade Board of Regents member. “I remember boogie boarding on the choppy, storm-produced waves as an eight-year-old.” When it became time to start thinking about colleges, he was drawn to Chaminade University. He already knew he liked the location: he had grown up with magazine covers featuring Pipeline and had traveled to Hawaii on family vacations. Chaminade also offered a behavioral sciences program that blended well with his interests. And he had grown up in Catholic schools, so the Marianist values felt like a natural fit. Some of his fondest recollections of being a Silversword are of the hands-on learning opportunities. “My favorite memory is of going on an extended field trip with Dr. Richard Bordner,” he says. “We spent a weekend at a heiau, the site of a sacred temple on the Big Island, and learned about Hawaiian culture. It was the type of unique, hands-on experience you can only find at Chaminade.” He also recalls joining Dr. Bryan Man on field trips to Waikiki to observe and learn about different subcultures of society and taking marine biology field trips to the tide pools around Sandy Beach. In recent years, these memories offer him something even more special — they provide him with a special connection to his daughter, Malia. She’s a junior at Chaminade and a behavioral science major just like her father. She’s enjoyed learning from both Dr. Bordner and Dr. Man. Malia’s decision to attend Chaminade took both Terry and his wife by surprise — Chaminade hadn’t been discussed much as an option before she announced it was where she wanted to go. At the time, they were living in Michigan and weren’t planning on moving back to Hawaii. But he supported her the same way his parents supported him. A n island homecoming

Terry has always had a passion for serving others. It’s a love he inherited from his mother, a social worker. “Giving someone hope brings me joy,” he says. “Working in social service

is something of a selfish pursuit because I experience happiness from helping others. You never know when helping someone may turn in to something bigger. Even just a simple smile could save someone’s life.” He credits his time at Chaminade for helping him turn that passion into a career. Studying with diverse students, learning about different cultures and having professors from all over the world provided him with a backdrop and a blank palette that he has been able to fill in with his own experiences. After graduating from Chaminade, he was a reading teacher at Washington Intermediate School in Honolulu and a counselor for runaway youth at Hale Kipa. But the high cost of living drove him and his wife back to Michigan when their son was born. His first job in Michigan was with the refugee programs at Catholic Charities in Lansing. “My degree from Chaminade taught me about people of different cultures and backgrounds and really opened my eyes to working with refugees. As soon as I walked into the refugee office in Lansing, I knew it was a good fit.” That was the beginning of his twenty-year and counting career working with refugees and immigrants. His early career sent him around the world with the United Nations refugee programs. His family has lived in Africa, New Jersey and Michigan, working with refugees and immigrants. They had settled back in Michigan, where Terry was the president and CEO of Catholic Charities West Michigan, and were very comfortable there, so he never thought they would move again. When his current position became available, he was hesitant to apply because he didn’t want to put his family through another move. But it was a unique opportunity, and his family had strong ties to Hawai‘i. His wife is from Hawai‘i and they were excited by the idea of coming back to be with friends and family. His daughter, Malia, had just started as a student at Chaminade. She was a bit apprehensive about her family’s move at first. “Part of her really wanted to be independent and be 4,000 miles away from us,” says Terry. “But now I think she appreciates having her parents close by.”

Almost exactly two years ago, his family returned to O‘ahu and he started his position as CEO on November 1, 2016. “I feel so blessed to be here,” says Terry. H awaii ’ s best- kept secret

In many ways, his goals for Catholic Charities Hawai‘i are similar to Dr. Babington’s goals for Chaminade — to bring awareness to the many programs that serve local residents and find new, innovative ways to tackle growing social issues.

He sees Catholic Charities as Hawai‘i’s best-kept secret. They have nearly 40 different programs that serve tens of thousands of people every year across Hawai‘i’s major islands. “A lot of people are aware of our programs — like the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center or the Mary Jane Home for pregnant women in need of safe, affordable housing — but they don’t always realize they are programs of Catholic Charities.” He sees a huge opportunity to bring awareness about the incredible work they do across the islands. He’s also excited to expand their programs on neighbor islands. There is a lot of need, and that, combined with the fact that there are untapped resources, means it’s a prime time to serve our neighbors. They will soon break ground on a new housing complex in Maui to provide affordable apartments for senior citizens. They’re also looking for new ways to care for Hawai‘i’s older residents. There’s a lot of “brain drain” in Hawai‘i, where young people leave Hawai‘i in pursuit of higher salaries and lower living costs. That means there are fewer young people and more older adults. “We’re looking to expand our services so seniors can age in place with dignity,” says Terry. “Providing social activities and helping

their parents during the four-day New Student Orientation. The event started on August 16 when new students moved into their new homes on campus. The liveliness of the day included an opportunity for students to meet their faculty while parents mingled nearby, a trolley tour of Kaimuki, lunch with our Marianist Brothers and a campus office open house. The busy day concluded with a nice dinner at Silversword Cafe, where students and their parents met with the director and resident advisors of Residential Life. The excitement continued on Friday and Saturday with more campus explorations, a presidential welcome and prayer service, a resource fair, Convocation, a new student luau and various day trips around the island to Ka’au Crater, Maunawili Falls, Waimanalo and Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck in Kahuku. The event concluded on Sunday with a Diamond Head hike in the morning, morning mass and brunch. Congratulations to our new Chaminade students–we’re excited to see where these next few years take them and support them on this new, exciting journey!

“As an alum, I have a lot of positive memories of Chaminade and partially because my daughter is a student here, I’m really invested in maintaining the high quality of education.” “I also think that since I work for a sister Catholic agency, there’s a lot of opportunity for collaboration.” In October, he attended the Hogan Entrepreneurial Program kickoff and had a chance to interact with several of the program’s students. “When they found out where I worked, they were very excited. A lot of young people are interested in business and giving back to the community. The blending of social work and business administration is a growing field and it’s important and critical for a position like mine where you have to balance both.” He thinks there’s a lot of potential to capitalize upon that momentum and build a strong partnership between Catholic Charities and Chaminade. He is excited to create new internship opportunities for Chaminade students. During his daughter’s first year at Chaminade, she participated in a service-learning project and volunteered at a homeless shelter and an immigration nonprofit. Catholic Charities also offers those programs, and Terry sees it as a natural fit for Chaminade’s service-learning component. Terry credits Chaminade with giving him the tools he needed to turn his passion for community service into a career and he’s excited to help provide those same opportunities to current students. “What brings me joy is to bring hope to another person,” he says. “It is gratifying to be able to work for an organization where you never have to compromise your values, and at the end of the day, you are fulfilled by the good work that has been accomplished. My hope is to share that experience with others so they too, can find the joy in helping others help themselves.”

Leaders of Tomorrow “You are very welcome here.” The Ho‘oulu Scholars Welcome Dinner on September 7, 2018 began with a very welcoming message from Dr. Helen Turner, dean of natural sciences and mathematics and vice president of innovation at Chaminade University. “We are delighted that you are here. Many applied but few were chosen—the Ho‘oulu Scholarship represents an investment in the future of our community here in Hawai‘i.” Chaminade faculty and staff gathered on campus with families from across the state to celebrate the new class of scholars and officially welcome them to the Chaminade ‘ohana. The dinner began with a traditional oli led by returning scholars and Kahoali‘i Keahi-Wood, cultural engagement specialist at Chaminade University. President Lynn Babington motivated the students to make an impact. “We are counting on you to lead us into a better world,” she said. “You have an entire ‘ohana here, and we are so invested in your success.” Thirty-six students received this year’s scholarship, joining a cohort of 89 Ho‘oulu Scholarship students on campus. But the evening also brought an exciting announcement from Dr. Helen Turner. Earlier that week, Chaminade University received a prestigious $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to offer an additional 15 scholarships next year. The Ho‘oulu Scholarship is a partnership between Chaminade University and Kamehameha Schools to build a new generation of Hawaiian scientists, health practitioners, forensic specialists, environmental professionals, data scientists and business leaders. Students who are accepted into the program receive full tuition assistance, consideration for a housing stipend and wraparound academic support. Livingston “Jack” Wong, CEO of Kamehameha Schools, inspired the students to work hard and compete. “If you work hard and compete,” he said, “you can do anything.” LEARN MORE

A retired Lt. Col. Marine Corps helicopter and fixed-wing pilot, Shizuru’s military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with two Gold Stars, Air Medal 2nd award, NMC Commendation Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal 2nd award. In addition to his bachelor’s degree from Chaminade, Shizuru holds a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Argosy University and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration degree. He is a graduate of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College and a Commandant of the Marine Corps National Fellow.

After seeing the Chaminade banner at Kapiolani Park, alumnus Peter Carocci joined faculty and staff at the first annual Chaminade Employee Picnic. He was excited to reconnect with the Chaminade ‘ohana and share stories of his time on campus. Carocci and his wife, Sheree, live in Syracuse, New York, and were in Hawaii for vacation.

Anthony M. Mira John D. Field, Jr. Master of Business Administration ’84

John Field, Jr. is Chaminade’s new Board of Regents Chair, and is the University’s first lay chair who is a Chaminade alumnus. He has served on the Board of Regents since 2012. Field is the vice president and treasurer of Punahou School. Field received a B.S. in business administration from the University of New Hampshire, a master’s degree from Chaminade University and has completed advanced coursework at the Pacific Coast Banking School, the University of Hawaii and Harvard University’s Advanced Management Programs. Field’s daughter Sara is also an alumna, earning a Master of Education in 2006.

Henry J. “Jamie” Holcombe Master of Business Administration ’89

Jamie Holcombe was named chief executive officer of Virginia-based Visium Technologies, Inc., a cybersecurity company. Previously, Holcombe served as vice president and general manager for Harris IT Services and Caprock Government Solutions; vice president of information systems for the Federal Communications Commission Universal Service Administrative Company; chief technology officer and senior vice president of operations for Globix, and as chief information officer for Cambrian Communications. In addition to receiving his MBA from Chaminade, Holcombe graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a bachelor of science degree, finishing first in his class in computer science, and a Master of Science degree in computer science from George Washington University.

B.S. Criminal Justice ’86

Anthony Mira is the deputy federal security director at San Francisco International Airport, where he carries out Transportation Security Administration (TSA) programs. Mira leads and advises the assistant federal security directors, collaborates with senior airport/air carrier and stakeholder partners and advances the goals of TSA. Previously, Mira was the TSA representative at the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines. His TSA career began in 2007 as the federal security director covering Maui, Molokai and Lanai. A thirty-year U.S. Air Force veteran, Mira spent the majority of his military career as a forwarddeployed security force specialist. Twenty of those years were at overseas locations in the western Pacific. While completing these assignments, he managed to complete his undergraduate and graduate studies in the areas of criminal justice and management. Mira and his wife and two sons live in Colorado.

Richard N. Shizuru B.A. Political Science ’86

This fall, Richard Shizura was asked to be the guest speaker at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s worldwide campuses commencement ceremony. The ceremony included undergraduate and graduate degree candidates from the university’s three Hawai‘i-based campuses — Marine Corps Base, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and Schofield Barracks. Shizuru administers the Plans and Operations Branch, which advises and assists the Marine Corps Forces, Pacific Commanding General on manpower issues. It also is the principal source of continuity for all matters related to plans and operations involving Marine Corps personnel, commands and installations throughout the Pacific theater.

Ronna White (née Birkenhagen) recently relocated to Nashville, Tennessee to become a manager for Pharmacy Strategic Sourcing at HealthTrust. Her work involves negotiating fair pricing agreements for over 1,600 facilities and additional clinics. HealthTrust represents half of the largest health systems in the U.S. for purchasing and supply chain. White is continuing her volunteer work with NHL charities through the Nashville Predators Foundation. NHL charities support local community organizations and youth hockey programs, and sponsor Paralympic hockey teams. A recent fundraiser was held for families impacted by Hurricane Florence.

Ron Connovich was recently named president of Fort Hamilton Hospital in Ohio. He has over 30 years of health care experience in finance and operations. Connovich joined Kettering Health Network in 2012 as chief operating officer and chief financial officer for Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia and Soin Medical Center in Beavercreek.

Elizabeth Ahana was promoted to senior consultant for public relations strategy at Kamehameha Schools. She is responsible for external communications strategy as well as serving as media spokesperson for the organization. “I am grateful for the opportunity to do this work for Kamehameha Schools; however, I don’t believe I would’ve realized my love for communications and public relations had it not been for two of my professors at Chaminade. Rylan Chong is one of the newest faculty members in the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Chaminade. Originally from Maui, Chong earned his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and a Hogan Entrepreneur Certificate from Chaminade. He has a master’s degree from Purdue University in information security, where he specialized in biometric systems and human factors. Chong completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree in information security and a graduate certificate in information security policy at Purdue University. He was an Alfred Sloan Foundation indigenous graduate scholar and a fellow of the Bilsland Strategic Initiative Fellowship. The Bilsland Fellowship is for outstanding Ph.D. students that demonstrate superior academic abilities and scholarly achievements. Chong’s current research areas of interest at Chaminade are data science, cybersecurity, health, the Pacific Islander social environment and the career development of STEM students. He says, “I am very blessed — and feel so humbled — to be given an opportunity to be part of Chaminade’s ‘ohana and for allowing me to help Chaminade move toward its goals, mission and vision. From the Hawaiian culture, we want to give back. And that is what I want to do.”

Newly elected, Heidi Tsuneyoshi won her primary race, becoming the first woman of Hawaiian ancestry to serve on the council of the City and County of Honolulu. She follows another Chaminade alumni member on the council, Brandon Elefante, MBA ’11.

Joseph “Keahi” Carrero recently joined Chaminade’s Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs as an academic advisor. Returning to Chaminade, Carrero says, “is an honor, and a blessing.” He served as the spring 2018 undergraduate commencement speaker, sharing his experience as a non-traditional student born and raised in Wai‘anae. Carrero is currently enrolled in Chaminade’s Masters of Education program.

David Dinh is an instructor within the business division at the University of Hawai‘iWest Oahu where he teaches courses covering marketing, global management and business ethics. Dinh has been teaching at the university since the fall 2016 semester. Dinh values the success of his students, creating relationships with local businesses and making a positive impact in the community. He is also a strong supporter of student veterans continuing their education and has helped many achieve their educational goals. Prior to teaching at the University of Hawai‘iWest Oahu, Dinh was a graduate admissions counselor at Chaminade. He is also a veteran, having served nine years with the Army National Guard as a non-commissioned officer with the 487th “Hiki No” Field Artillery Battalion.

Anthony Lamorena, a past Chaminade Student Government Association president, is moving to Washington D.C. to work at a tech start-up company called Quorum Analytics. The company, a software platform that offers “solutions in stakeholder engagement, legislative tracking, and grassroots

Chardonnay Hi‘ilawe Pao says that Chaminade is her educational home base and is a place she returns to frequently for support and advice. After graduating from Chaminade, Pao found herself drawn to the music scene and farm-to-table food service industry. Today, as an entrepreneur, her business ventures include Chardonnay Music, Kapakahi Grindz and Jay’s Hog Farm. Continuing her connection to Chaminade, Pao’s Kapakahi Grindz food truck has been featured at the alumni reunions. She says, “What makes Chaminade special are the people and relationships built on this hill. This isn’t just a network, it is an ‘ohana. A place where you can return and feel welcomed, respected and cared for.”

“I was working three part-time jobs before I received a scholarship because I was scared I wouldn’t be able to afford college. I came to Chaminade right away after receiving my scholarship letter, and there have been a lot of opportunities here. I want to go into the medical field because of the story of my birth. My parents had trouble getting pregnant—they went to doctor after doctor and no one would help them until they met Dr. Theresa, whom I’m named after. I’m their miracle child. Announcing Our Newest Major A hot new major in data science, analytics and visualization is coming to Chaminade University in fall of 2019.

Data science is dominating discussions on a daily basis — big data is saturating every sector of the economy and not enough people know how to analyze and communicate it. According to a recent LinkedIn article, data scientist is the fastest growing and one of the best-paid jobs in the U.S. The National Science Foundation, which funded Chaminade to start this program, identified “harnessing the data revolution” as one of its 10 big ideas for the future of U.S. science and technology. “The world is drowning in data,” says Dr. Lynn Babington, president of Chaminade University. “We need more people who can convert data into meaning, into knowledge that will guide our decisions. This program supports Hawaii’s innovation economy and brings a much-needed skill set to our workforce.” She adds,

“Why place this program at Chaminade? It’s because we link science with values — our new program places a strong emphasis on data integrity and ethics because that’s the kind of data scientist our world needs right now.” This is the first data science major in the state. Students will partner directly with industry partners to gain real-world experience and build networks. They’ll work with businesses and organizations for a semester-long capstone project and engage in a variety of

hands-on internships. Students will learn using new fully-equipped cyberinfrastructure created specifically for this new program, including a new data science center and virtual reality classrooms. The new program was a direct response to industry and stakeholder requests. “Data analytics is critical,” says Robbie Melton, executive director and CEO of Hawaii Technology Development Corporation. “It is integral to our state and our economy. We’re excited Chaminade is offering this program because it keeps students current with the most advanced technologies. It also provides them with high paying jobs which is what we want for our young people.” “Our students will get a tremendous grounding in the technical aspects of data science,” says Dr. Helen Turner, vice president of innovation and dean of the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Chaminade University. “They will get the training to be great coders, communicators and visualization specialists.” Turner also noted the flexibility of the new major: “Students can specialize in tracks for healthcare analytics, business analytics, environmental analytics and analytics for the science and technology industries. With our four-year graduation guarantee, we will soon be serving every sector of the economy with our graduates.” Applications to begin the new data science major in fall 2019 are open now. Fiscal year 2018 was a year of transition for the University. Our new President, Lynn Babington, joined the team on August 1, and brought innovative ideas and plans to ensure that Chaminade is in a position to address the future changes in the ever-changing atmosphere of higher education. Financially, Chaminade had a moderate year — despite the continued challenges in enrollment. Net tuition revenue had a slight increase over FY 2017 due in large part to pricing increases and the success of our online program in Micronesia. Total revenues increased slightly from FY 2017 due to continued success in receiving new federal and private grants. Overall, the University had a positive change in net assets for the year of $3.8 million.

We are very proud of our completed renovation of Hale Hoaloha. It was once owned by Chaminade and used as a residence hall, then was given to Saint Louis School in 2003 in exchange for a portion of Clarence T.C. Ching Hall. In January 2016, Chaminade had the opportunity to purchase back the building from Saint Louis School at a cost of $3.5 million. In 2017, the University began renovation of the 12,000 square foot, three-story building. The newly renovated building, which includes active learning classrooms, collaborative space and offices, opened in January 2018. In April 2018 the University held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new 4,300 square foot Silversword Athletics Training Center and Locker Room. The project is expected to be completed in Spring 2019, at a total cost of $4.2 million.

Yukio Ozaki was invited to the Commitment to Excellence Art Exhibition organized by Japanese Chamber of Commerce and received the Best in Show award for his ceramic sculpture titled “Union Cerebrated.” Throughout August, the sculpture was on display at Linekona Art Center and was then at Neiman Marcus at Ala Moana Center.

While academics are at the core of a university education, this initiative will help enhance our student experience in the classroom and in athletics.

Dr. Elizabeth Lockard received her National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) Certification, which demonstrations a specific set of core competencies and proves her expertise in understanding and applying current interior design codes established to protect public health, safety and welfare.

Chaminade’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program received a 10-year full accreditation renewal from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), extending the program’s accreditation into 2028. “This renewal is a great accomplishment,” said Dr. Helen Whippy, Provost. “It not only validates the incredible job done by all those associated with our nursing program, but it also lets prospective nursing students know they can choose our program with confidence, and that we will help take their career to wherever it is they want to go.”

Over the course of only two years, I have met so many different mentors who have helped mold me into the strong and driven woman I am today. Without the help of Chaminade University’s resources and financial aid, my exposure to growth would be limited. Today, I am in various leadership positions, continuously sharing God’s love through the talents he has so graciously blessed me with. Thank you for playing a huge role in my success!”

Dr. Elizabeth Park received three grants from the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation — one for collaboration with the St. Francis Intergenerational Center, one to implement an emotional intelligence program at the L. Robert Allen Montessori Lab School and another for a statewide survey assessing preschool teacher attitudes regarding digital media and technology.

Dr. Katelynn Perrault received a prestigious grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The five-year grant from NSF’s Faculty Early Career Development Program and Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research is expected to total $633,668. The funding will support Dr. Perrault’s research into new analytical technologies in the health and forensic science fields and will also be used to create innovative teaching approaches.
