Congratulations, graduates!

On behalf of our Boards of Regents and Governors, our faculty, our distinguished alumni, our families and our many friends of Chaminade University, it is my great pleasure to welcome all of you gathered here today.

A commencement represents both a celebration of a milestone achievement and a new beginning. It marks the moment you cross the threshold between students and alumni, between one phase of your lives and the next. It’s where we stand together, in that liminal space between what lies behind and what waits ahead— between the familiar past and the unpredictable future.

As a university community, you have made all of us extremely proud. When you joined our Kalaepōhaku community, you could not have foreseen that you would be completing your degree requirements in the throes of a global pandemic. And yet—despite the many adversities and restrictions—you adapted. Amid the uncertainty, you persevered. And through it all, you showed an exceptional capacity for resilience.

Throughout your academic journey, I have been inspired by your unwavering dedication to excellence and the Marianist values. You have shown it in the midst of great angst and in periods of calm. The disciplinary expertise you have acquired as a result will serve you well in all of your future endeavors. When you combine that expertise with the resilience you have developed, truly, no challenge is too great. You are well equipped to solve pressing problems; contribute to a more just, more equitable society; and make a profound impact on our world.

I truly believe that the power to shape the future is in each of you. I also believe that, to succeed in this quest, humility must be your constant companion. With your education as your guide and humility as your beacon, I have every confidence that you will have the capacity to confront the most complex issues of our day.

Throughout Chaminade’s 68-year history, our commitment to implementing our ideas and our innovations for the greater good has remained a unifying constant. Class of 2023, thank you for embracing that narrative in your pursuit of social justice and service to our communities.

As you prepare for the next stage in your life, I am reminded of these words from our University’s namesake: “By educating the mind and the heart,” Father Chaminade once said, “the school can form people who in turn can work at changing the very structures of their society to ensure a community of justice and reconciliation.” Those are high standards, but I know you can meet the challenge.

In closing, if we are fulfilling our mission at Chaminade, you now possess the transformational knowledge, wisdom and modesty to positively impact the globe. We look forward to seeing all that you accomplish in your next chapter. And know, at Chaminade, you have a support network for life. You are a member of a strong and tight-knit 'ohana—a family of proud Silverswords. As you cross the stage to accept your degree, I encourage you to think of all those who offered the support and guidance you needed to get to where you are right now—at this moment—loved ones and friends, mentors and professors, advisors and counselors.

Graduates, I applaud you!

4 SPRING 2023 COMMENCEMENT
MESSAGE from the PRESIDENT

HISTORY of CHAMINADE

In 1955, the Marianists founded Saint Louis Junior College. Two years later, the college became a fouryear coeducational institution and got a new name. Its fitting namesake: Father William Chaminade (1761–1850), the founder of the Society of Mary and a social reformer who saw education as a way of transforming society for the better. In 1977, Chaminade added its first graduate programs—and received a final name change to reflect the expansion: Chaminade University of Honolulu.

Since its founding, Chaminade has undergone significant growth. The only Catholic university in the islands, Chaminade boasts world-class academic programs, a faculty of widely recognized scholars and a student body of innovators—tomorrow’s ethical leaders in a diversity of fields. We prepare students for success with 27 undergraduate and seven graduate degree programs, mentorship, career development opportunities and a network of academic advising and other support.

While we’ve grown as an institution, adding state-of-the-art facilities and incorporating modern educational practices along the way, we remain driven by our founding values: to educate the whole student—mind and spirit—and help each of them seek out ways to make positive change in the world.

MISSION

Guided by its Catholic, Marianist and liberal arts traditions, Chaminade prides itself on its robust academic offerings, thriving campus community and rich development opportunities for students. But what makes Chaminade unique is its service-oriented mission: a commitment to create an environment that drives students, faculty members, administrators and staff to build a more just, peaceful society. Through hands-on learning and service projects, we prepare our students for success in their careers.

CHARACTERISTICS of A MARIANIST EDUCATION

A Marianist education considers the whole student, valuing critical academic inquiry, personal growth and service to others. Educational practice in the Marianist tradition has five distinctive characteristics:

• We educate for formation in faith, helping students with the search for meaning in their lives.

• We provide an integral quality education, feeding educational passions and creating lifelong learners.

• We educate in family spirit, forming a warm, welcoming 'ohana on campus that supports all students.

• We educate for service, justice and peace, committing ourselves every day to the common good.

• We educate for adaptation and change, recognizing that “new times call for new methods.”

PRESIDENTIAL INSIGNIA

The insignia of the Office of the President at Chaminade University honors Chaminade’s past while valuing its present and looking forward to the future. The insignia depicts a special medallion, worn by the president on occasions of note, which is suspended from four woven strands of Ni ‘ihau shells.

The medallion comprises six polished kukui nut shells, each with a symbolic relief: water, to represent the original home of the Marianist community in Honolulu; the rare lokelani rose, to honor Mary, mother of Jesus; the crest of the Society of Mary impressed on three crescents, which is the symbol for Bordeaux where the Society of Mary was founded; cherubs on mountains, representing the University’s home; a dove to symbolize the Holy Spirit; and the flaming sword or silversword.

SPRING 2023 COMMENCEMENT 5

CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY MACE

The tradition of the academic mace, or ceremonial staff, dates back to medieval Europe. Today, ceremonial maces are carried at the head of processions, including at the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.K. Parliament. In Chaminade’s academic tradition, the mace-bearer is the Faculty Senate president.

Chaminade’s mace includes a depiction of shooting flames symbolic of a flaming sword. Engraved into ‘ōhi ‘a lehua wood medallions on each side of the mace is the University’s motto: Vita in Verbo (Life in the Word). Both the head and handle of the mace are made of curly koa, a rare native wood.

The mace was designed by Robb Young ’75 as a gift to Chaminade from Mary Civille.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

Why do graduates, professors and administrators wear gowns, hoods and caps at commencement? The origins of formal academic garb date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when the ordinary dress of the scholar was similar to that of the cleric or the priest. While modern professors and students no longer wear gowns to class, the tradition of academic regalia continues at special ceremonies.

Gowns: At Chaminade’s commencement, gowns are all blue. Gowns for those being conferred bachelor’s degrees have pointed sleeves and a fairly elaborate yoke. The gowns for those receiving master’s degrees have oblong sleeves, open at the wrists. The gown for the doctoral degree can be distinguished by velvet panels on the front and three bars on the bell-shaped sleeves.

Caps: There are several theories on the origin of how the mortarboard became a part of the academic costume. One explanation is that it evolved from the square biretta of Renaissance clergy. Velvet is reserved for those with doctoral degrees. During commencement, the tassel on the cap is switched from right to left when the degree is awarded.

Hoods: The hoods worn during commencement are packed with meaning. They signify the highest degree a person has attained, a scholar’s field of study and the granting institution. They vary in shape, color and length. The colors found on hoods can be used to quickly identify the wearer’s discipline.

GRADUATES with HONORS

Bachelor’s degree candidates who have excelled academically and who have completed at least 60 semester hours with letter grades at Chaminade may be awarded honors at graduation. Chaminade University confers the following honors: cum laude (cumulative grade-point average of 3.51); magna cum laude (3.76); and summa cum laude (3.96). Students who have completed at least 30 but fewer than 60 semester hours at Chaminade with letter grades and who have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.51 or higher may be awarded “with distinction” [honors].

This list contains graduation honors at Chaminade University as of March 23, 2023 Graduate students are not awarded honors In the American higher education system, cum laude , magna cum laude , summa cum laude and “with distinction” awards are unique to undergraduate education .

A ’95 Kaua'i High School alumnus, the 11th mayor of the Garden Island attended Kaua'i Community College, and graduated from Chaminade University of Honolulu in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He is also a Credentialed Cooperative Director from the National Rural Electric Association in Arlington, Virginia.

The third Kawakami to occupy a seat in the State House representing Kaua'i, the avid surfer and Brazilian Jujitsu practioner’s legislative service began as a member of the Kaua'i County Council from 2008 to 2011, and again from 2016 to 2018. During his tenure as a Kaua'i County Council member, he chaired the Intergovernmental Relations Committee and vice chaired the Committee of the Whole.

In 2011, then-Gov. Neil Abercrombie appointed the Kaua'i councilman to the State House of Representatives District 14, where he served as the assistant majority leader; chaired the Committee on Economic Development and Business; and vice chaired the Committee on Energy and Environmental Protection, as well as the Committee on Commerce and Consumer Protection. In the 2012 and 2014 elections, the Kaua'i legislator ran and was elected to serve as the representative for District 14 East and North Kaua'i.

Since 2004, Mayor Kawakami has volunteered his time, service and experience to support community organizations, which include the Kaua'i Economic Development Board, Kaua'i Police Activities League, Līhu'e Business Association and the Kiwanis Club. Previously, he served on the Catholic Charities Advisory Committee, and held different roles with the Kaua'i Island Utility Cooperative, including second vice chair, Committee chair for Strategic Planning and chair for the Nominating Committee.

His experiences in the private sector range from his humble start as a paperboy and fast-food employee, to an operations manager for Menehune Food Mart, Inc. and president of three corporations.

On November 6, 2018, Kawakami was elected as mayor of the County of Kaua'i and Ni'ihau, and was re-elected for a second term that began on December 1, 2022.

STUDENT SPEAKERS

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT SPEAKER

Eri Elsa Leong is a proud Uchinaanchu, a person of Okinawan descent, who was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. While attaining her Bachelor of Arts in Communication, she served two semesters as a staff writer for the Chaminade student newspaper The Silversword, and as a Peer Mentor, Orientation Leader, and Student Coordinator for the Office of Student Activities and Leadership during her junior and senior academic years. A student-athlete with the women's cross country team, Leong was named Most Inspirational on her team and was a member of NCAA Academic AllPacWest for both the 2019–2020 and 2021–2022 seasons. Additionally, Leong served as the Student Ambassador for the Marianist Leadership Center from her freshman through junior years. She was awarded the 2020 Brother Joseph Becker Award of Excellence Freshman of the Year for the Chaminade University Co-Curricular Awards. In 2020, Leong was accepted to the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP), where she spent two years exploring a career in higher education, and received a nomination for the NASPA Asian Pacific Islander Knowledge Community.

GRADUATE STUDENT SPEAKER

Todd Michael Sibley was born and raised in Torrance, California. He has always been fascinated with history and cultures and following his graduation from Loyola Marymount University in 2008, he worked as a social worker in Los Angeles for two years before leaving to teach English in Japan in 2010.

Todd taught English (among various other jobs) in Japan between 2010 –2019. He taught at language schools, preschools, Teikyo University and an all-girls junior and senior high school, Otsuma Nakano. In December of 2019, he followed his heart and fulfilled a lifelong dream to move to Hawai'i.

It was at Loyola Marymount where he was introduced to other students from all over the United States, but he immediately gravitated to and was accepted by students from Hawai'i. They took him under their wings and introduced him to Hawaiian history and culture. After working for a while as a social worker in Honolulu, his job fell victim to the pandemic at the end of the year. He decided to pursue his Master of Arts in Teaching Social Studies in Secondary (6-12) and is currently student teaching to fulfill his requirements.

A natural leader, Todd attended the National Youth Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. in October 2001, one month after the devastating attacks on 9/11. Todd was also voted Most Inspirational Player all four years on his high school baseball team by his teammates. Using that innate ability to connect to others, Todd has embraced living in Hawai'i and hopes to inspire his students to follow their dreams, as he believes they are the future and an invaluable resource.

SPRING 2023 COMMENCEMENT 33

CHAMINADE, ALMA MATER, HAIL!

Light of truth by tropic sea, Guide of youth, you keep us free. Your colors: white as curling foam, Your royal blue our island home.

Lift our loyal spirits high, With a sword of inspiration

Lead to battle with the cry, “Life in the Word”— and victory For love of God and nation.

Rendezvous of West and East Home of evening star, a gleam, And morning star, pure silver beam, Hail, splendor, echo of the sun.

Lift our loyal spirits high, With the sword of inspiration

Lead to battle with the cry, “Life in the Word”— and victory For love of God and nation.

Chaminade, Alma Mater, Hail!

NATIONAL ANTHEM

O say can you see, By the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed At the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, Through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched Were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets’ red glare, The bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night That our flag was still there.

O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free And the home of the brave?
