MESSAGE from THE PRESIDENT Congratulations, graduates! It is an honor to gather with you and your loved ones today to celebrate the ending of one journey and the beginning of another. Today you are a graduate! For a moment, think of everything you have accomplished and everything you have overcome to earn that impressive title. Think of the many obligations you juggled and the challenges you faced, not to mention the long nights you spent studying, while pursuing your degree. None of these deterred you from achieving your academic goals. We are proud of you! You are embarking on a new chapter in your life at a critical time for the world. As we continue to emerge from the pandemic and look ahead to developing challenges and opportunities. There is so much promise ahead—and we must go out and embrace it. As we move forward, we must also remember the lessons of the pandemic. The COVID-19 crisis underscored the power of human kindness, of community building and care, of kuleana and our shared responsibility to one another. Throughout the pandemic, as you modeled these important values every day, you also demonstrated remarkable resilience, understanding, flexibility and grit. Reflecting on all you have achieved over the course of your degree and all the promise and accomplishments that lie before you, I am reminded of a quote from our University’s namesake. Father Chaminade once wrote that we must not become discouraged if we encounter some obstacle in the way of necessary and positive change. “Never has change been done and never will it be done without difficulty,” he wrote. Put another way, change is never easy—but it is very much worth it. During your time at Chaminade, you grew into a change-maker and a leader. And in service to those roles, in the years ahead, you will undoubtedly face challenges as you seek to have a positive impact on the world. My advice to you, just like Father Chaminade’s wise words, is to persevere. Know that pursuing social justice and peace AND building a better community are critical to the world today, but may not always be easy to accomplish. And know that every step of the way, your Chaminade 'ohana will be behind you—cheering you on and celebrating your accomplishments. At every moment in your career and every milestone in your life, I hope you also feel our aloha as a member of the global Chaminade family—thousands strong and growing every year. The Silversword 'ohana is diverse, and each member is unique, but we all share a passion for Chaminade’s mission of service and of the common good. It is in that spirit that we are also so excited today to honor esteemed community members Kitty Sullivan Wo and Vaughn Vasconcellos with Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degrees for their generous and continued support of our University. Their belief in Chaminade is a belief in you, in your classmates, and in the graduates who came before you and the ones who will come after. HISTORY of CHAMINADE In 1955, the Marianists founded Saint Louis Junior College. Two years later, the college became a fouryear coeducational institution and got a new name. Its fitting namesake: Father William Chaminade (1761–1850), the founder of the Society of Mary and a social reformer who saw education as a way of transforming society for the better. In 1977, Chaminade added its first graduate programs—and received a final name change to reflect the expansion: Chaminade University of Honolulu. Since its founding, Chaminade has undergone significant growth. The only Catholic university in the islands, Chaminade boasts world-class academic programs, a faculty of widely recognized scholars and a student body of innovators—tomorrow’s ethical leaders in a diversity of fields. We prepare students for success with 27 undergraduate and seven graduate degree programs, mentorship, career development opportunities and a network of academic advising and other supports. While we’ve grown as an institution, adding state-of-the-art facilities and incorporating modern educational practices along the way, we remain driven by our founding values: to educate the whole student—mind and spirit—and help them seek out ways to make positive change in the world.

MISSION Chaminade, guided by its Catholic, Marianist and liberal arts traditions, prides itself on its robust academic offerings, thriving campus community and rich development opportunities for students. But what makes Chaminade unique is its service-oriented mission: a commitment to create an environment that drives students, faculty members, administrators and staff to build a more just, peaceful society. Through hands-on learning and service projects, we prepare our students for success in careers.

CHARACTERISTICS of A MARIANIST EDUCATION A Marianist education considers the whole student, valuing critical academic inquiry, personal growth and service to others. Educational practice in the Marianist tradition has five distinctive characteristics: • We educate for formation in faith, helping students with the search for meaning in their lives. • We provide an integral quality education, feeding educational passions and creating lifelong learners. • We educate in family spirit, forming a warm, welcoming 'ohana on campus that supports all students. • We educate for service, justice and peace, committing ourselves every day to the common good. • We educate for adaptation and change, recognizing that “new times call for new methods.”

PRESIDENTIAL INSIGNIA The insignia of the Office of the President at Chaminade University honors Chaminade’s past while valuing its present and looking forward to the future. The insignia depicts a special medallion, worn by the president on occasions of note, which is suspended from four woven strands of Ni‘ihau shells. The medallion comprises six polished kukui nut shells, each with a symbolic relief: water, to represent the original home of the Marianist community in Honolulu; the rare lokelani rose, to honor Mary, mother of Jesus; the crest of the Society of Mary impressed on three crescents, which is the symbol for Bordeaux where the Society of Mary was founded; cherubs on mountains, representing the University’s home; a dove to symbolize the Holy Spirit; and the flaming sword or silversword.

CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY MACE The tradition of the academic mace, or ceremonial staff, dates back to medieval Europe. Today, ceremonial maces are carried at the head of processions, including at the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.K. Parliament. In Chaminade’s academic tradition, the mace-bearer is the Faculty Senate president. Chaminade’s mace includes a depiction of shooting flames symbolic of a flaming sword. Engraved into ‘ōhi‘a lehua wood medallions on each side of the mace is the University’s motto: Vita in Verbo (Life in the Word). Both the head and handle of the mace are made of curly koa, a rare native wood. The mace was designed by Robb Young ’75 as a gift to Chaminade from Mary Civille.

ACADEMIC REGALIA Why do graduates, professors and administrators wear gowns, hoods and caps at commencement? The origins of formal academic garb date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when the ordinary dress of the scholar was similar to that of the cleric or the priest. While modern professors and students no longer wear gowns to class, the tradition of academic regalia continues at special ceremonies. Gowns: At Chaminade’s commencement, gowns are all blue. Gowns for those being conferred bachelor’s degrees have pointed sleeves and a fairly elaborate yoke. The gowns for those receiving master’s degrees have oblong sleeves, open at the wrists. The gown for the doctoral degree can be distinguished by velvet panels on the front and three bars on the bell-shaped sleeves. Caps: There are several theories on the origin of how the mortarboard became a part of the academic costume. One explanation is that it evolved from the square biretta of Renaissance clergy. Velvet is reserved for those with doctoral degrees. During commencement, the tassel on the cap is switched from right to left when the degree is awarded.

Hoods: The hoods worn during commencement are packed with meaning. They signify the highest degree a person has attained, a scholar’s field of study and the granting institution. They vary in shape, color and length. The colors found on hoods can be used to quickly identify the wearer’s discipline. White . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . GRADUATES with HONORS Bachelor’s degree candidates who have excelled academically and who have completed at least 60 semester hours with letter grades at Chaminade may be awarded honors at graduation. Chaminade University confers the following honors: cum laude (cumulative grade-point average of 3.51); magna cum laude (3.76); and summa cum laude (3.96). Students who have completed at least 30 but fewer than 60 semester hours at Chaminade with letter grades and who have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.51 or higher may be awarded “with distinction” [honors]. This list contains graduation honors at Chaminade University as of March 23, 2022. Graduate students are not awarded honors. In the American higher education system, cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude and “with distinction” awards are unique to undergraduate education.

Vaughn Garner Akimeka Vasconcellos Doctor of Humane Letters

Vaughn G. A. Vasconcellos was born in Honolulu and raised in Ho'olehua, Moloka'i and Papakōlea, O'ahu. He attended Kamehameha Schools and the United States Military Academy at West Point where he earned a B.S. in Engineering. Vasconcellos later went on to earn a M.S. in Personnel Management from Troy University and an Executive MBA from Northeastern University. He founded Akimeka, LLC in January 1997 and served as its president and chief executive officer. He also co-founded the Alaka'ina Foundation in 2012, a not-for-profit Native Hawaiian Organization that focuses on building leadership programs for native Hawaiian youth in rural areas and Hawaiian Homestead communities. The Foundation supports programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics ( STEAM ) across the United States. Vasconcellos served on the Maui Economic Development Board, Mālama Nā Keiki Foundation, the Pacific American Foundation and the Hawai'i Chamber of Commerce. In 2000, Vasconcellos was selected as Entrepreneur of the Year by the Small Business Administration (SBA) for the State of Hawai'i; and in 2009 he was named SBA's Small Business Person of the Year for Hawai'i. He committed his time and expertise to Chaminade University serving as chair for the Board of Regents from 2014 – 2018 and is currently a member of the Board of Governors. In 2016 Vasconcellos was named to the Silversword Hall of Fame. He currently serves on the Advisory Board for the Hogan Entrepreneurial Program and was honored in 2019 with a Lifetime Achievement Award. He and the Alaka'ina Foundation support student education through two major scholarships at Chaminade University for student athletes and Native Hawaiian scholars. Vasconcellos and his wife Suzie recently funded an endowed Leadership Institute within the Hogan Entrepreneurial Program.

Kathleen “Kitty” Sullivan Wo Doctor of Humane Letters

Kitty Sullivan Wo was born in Hong Kong and raised in Honolulu, Hawai'i, where she graduated from Punahou School and earned a B.S. Business Administration degree from the University of the Pacific. She later joined her family’s business as an owner and director of the Sullivan Family of Companies, which includes Foodland Super Market, Ltd. Sullivan Wo has been a volunteer and philanthropist involved in many community organizations including chairing the Punahou School Board of Trustees, the St. Francis Healthcare System Board and currently the Honolulu Museum of Art Board. Sullivan Wo was honored in 2009 by the Girl Scouts of Hawai'i as a Woman of Distinction, and was named an Outstanding Volunteer by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Aloha Chapter in 2013 for her long-standing contributions to Chaminade and Punahou. In 2018, Kitty received the St. Francis of Assisi Spirit Award and in 2021 received the “O” in Life Award from Punahou School. Sullivan Wo was named to the Chaminade University Board of Governors and in 2005 was named chair. In 2009, she joined the Board of Regents as chair. She has committed her time and expertise to supporting Chaminade University. During her time as a governor and regent, Sullivan Wo led a major fundraising campaign, dedicated the Sullivan Family Library, recruited new regents, served on the Presidential search committee and chaired the inauguration committee. She was named to the Silversword Hall of Fame in 2014 and continues to support Chaminade students’ education through philanthropy.

Suzanne Puanani Vares-Lum President, East-West Center

Suzanne (Suzy) Puanani Vares-Lum was named president of the East-West Center in January 2022. She is the first woman, Native Hawaiian and Hawai'i resident to be chosen for this role. As a retired major general with 34 years of service, Vares-Lum has held key roles addressing priority national security challenges in the region. After retirement, she formed Vares-Lum Indo-Pacific Consulting, LLC to provide consulting and advising on regional issues. As a community leader, Vares-Lum serves on a variety of nonprofit boards, including the American Red Cross Pacific Islands Region. She also serves as a strategic advisor to the Hawai'i Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Council. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism in 1989 and her Master of Education in Teaching in 1996 from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. As a graduate of the US Army War College, she earned a Master of Strategic Studies degree in 2011. In 2019, she became a National Security Fellow of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. She is also an alumna of the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies. Vares-Lum received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2017. Additionally, the State of Hawai'i House of Representatives, Governor of the State of Hawai'i, and Hawai'i Congressional Delegation presented her with certificates of recognition for outstanding service to the State of Hawai'i in 2021.

Albert Benjamin Respicio B.A. Communication

Albert Benjamin Respicio was born and raised on the west side of O'ahu and is the eldest child of Alberto and Buenafe Respicio. At Chaminade University, he has been heavily involved in the Communication department within the School of Business and Communication, was a writer for the Chaminade student newspaper, and interned on the Sugilanon television series. After graduating, he hopes to take the lessons and experiences he has gathered at Chaminade to continue to be a better friend, brother and son as he journeys onto the next chapter of his life.

Kianna Miel P. Dizon Master of Science in Counseling Psychology

Originally from Washington State, Kianna Dizon has always valued family and community. As a result, she has pursued a career that embodies these morals. After transplanting to the Island of O'ahu, she earned a B.A. in Organizational Communications at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, where she was a Core Team Leader in the campus ministry called Cru ( formerly known as Campus Crusades for Christ ). As a woman of faith, Dizon felt a calling to pursue the Marriage and Family Therapy concentration in the Master of Science in Counseling Psychology program at Chaminade University to serve local families and the community. In doing so, she hopes to partner with local churches to provide spiritual-based counseling and educate others on emotional and mental health, and to deepen their connection and interpersonal relationships with one another. Dizon is a member of the Psi Chi Honors SocietyChaminade Chapter and is an advocate for higher education and the AAPI community. Upon the completion of her master's degree, Dizon hopes to use her experience in youth development programs to create opportunities and resources for low-income and at-risk youth to pursue college-level degrees.
