Letter from the President

E

ach year, as we celebrate the close of another successful school year, I find myself reflecting upon the graduating class. I have been fortunate to see many leaders develop over the years at Chaminade. Our students go forward and excel in college, courageously protect our country, start families of their own, and become thoughtful leaders in corporate America. They grow into a broader leadership role and live the motto of becoming "the men the world needs them to be." And so much of that growth began here at Chaminade.

Leadership is evident in every class at Chaminade. After all, it is part of our commitment to our young men. Often being a leader at Chaminade is very visible and presents itself in a very public way. We see it in our House Captains as they lead their houses, our athletic team captains who lead their team on and off the field, our retreat leaders who lead the spiritual sharing and growth of their group.

However, leadership takes on many forms and never has that been more evident than with the Class of 2018.

Each of the young men of the Class of 2018 has taken on his own very personal form of leadership. Many of them have silently left their positive marks on Chaminade. I have seen members of the Class of 2018 step up and take ownership of our CSPN broadcasts while mentoring younger students to take over next year. A number of our outgoing seniors kick-started our Mission Week activities and their efforts resulted in record-breaking donation results. This class in a very special way regularly included the memory of Cole Owens, their classmate who succumbed to cancer in the summer of 2015. The members of this class individually, yet almost unanimously, selected Carl Schmittgens to receive the coveted Esto Vir award (never before has the selection been virtually unanimous).

They fully embraced and supported Jonathan Struckhoff's decision to discern a religious vocation by entering the seminary next year.

The examples of their impact and leadership are plentiful!

I am very proud of the Class of 2018. They have made their own personal mark on Chaminade. They have acted as examples for our younger students to take the lead next year, and I look forward to witnessing the impact that they will most certainly make on Chaminade. I believe this quote sums up how the leadership illustrated by the Class of 2018 can hold a lesson for each of us to reflect upon.

"Leading is not the same as being the leader. Being the leader means you hold the highest rank, either by earning it, good fortune, or navigating internal politics. Leading, however, means that others willingly follow you—not because they have to, not because they are paid to, but because they want to." Simon Sinek

In closing, please know that I am very grateful for the support of the entire Chaminade Family. It is only with your support that we are able to continue our mission of building a strong community of faith. Thank you for your support in guiding our young men on their Esto Vir Journey. I pray that you have a very restful and rejuvenating summer!

Principal's Corner Pathway to Access College Early

PACE Program - Pathway to Access College Early NEW TIMES, NEW METHODS!

F

irmly grounded in the Catholic Marianist tradition, Blessed William Joseph Chaminade invites his educational communities to engage and envision "New Times, New Methods." Chaminade College Preparatory School has always encouraged intellectual discourse and creative imagination in facing new times while relying on our faithfilled view. Our school remains dedicated to the mission of preparing our young men for college and life and making them men the world needs them to be. From the Pre-AP initiatives that begin in middle school through Advanced College Credit, Advanced Placement, CISCO, and STEM PLTW (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Project Lead the Way) college-level coursework offered in high school, intentional collegiate instruction prepares students for college readiness skills and career pathways.

The PACE Program is a bridge to escalate the college education of a Chaminade student to a university. PACE allows our students, simultaneously, to receive robust and rigorous college-level coursework for both high school and college-level course credits, and transfer these credits toward a degree program at a university. Highly credentialed and qualified Chaminade faculty are authorized CISCO, SLU, STEM PLTW, and UMSL Adjunct University Instructors who commit to enhanced learning and who deliver academic customized instruction to our students for a smooth transition to the college experience.

PACE allows and promotes a head start on an undergraduate bachelor's degree, a double major program of studies and a transition into a graduate degree all within a traditional four-year university program. A Chaminade graduate recently reported that a "gap" year was another unique benefit for him due to PACE.

With changing demographics, changing economics and rising college costs, PACE provides an affordable opportunity for

our Chaminade students to continue their education in a university of their choosing. The PACE Program has fostered a transformative education for the Chaminade student, inspiring him to think critically, plan wisely and pursue the future.

PACE maps provide a glimpse of many, but not all, available college-level courses that equate to one to two years of college credit completed on Chaminade's campus.

We are currently raising the visibility of PACE, in our school and beyond, building relationships with our university constituencies and remaining proactive and responsive to the emerging needs of our Chaminade young men.

The ESTO VIR Journey Office of Enrollment Management

W

ith the school year now over, students and teachers depart for their summer breaks, but one office that remains open and busy is the Enrollment Management Office. The Enrollment Management Office will be on summer hours, but will still have much to do, including planning for fall recruiting activities. These include events such as Archdiocesan High School Nights, High School Highlight Night, Open House, Secondary School Night, daily shadow visits, international travel, and family meetings that will all make up a busy fall.

The summer is also a time for the Enrollment Management Office to reflect on the year from an enrollment standpoint and begin the process of evaluating all recruitment efforts to see where Chaminade, as a whole,

Enrollment numbers continue to be strong at Chaminade. For this upcoming year, Chaminade's high school will open in the fall at its largest enrollment since the 2003-2004 school year. The freshman Class of 2022 is currently on a waiting list – as Chaminade is committed to ensuring that class sizes remain small and students receive the individual attention they need to be successful in a rigorous college preparatory environment.

Although Chaminade has robust numbers going into the fall, the Enrollment Management Office recognizes that maintaining this momentum will be a challenge in the upcoming years. The biggest barrier to attending a private school is the rising cost. Dianne continues, "Our biggest challenge is the affordability of independent education. The costs of attracting and maintaining high-level faculty, offering college preparatory curriculum, and global-focused experiences all continue to rise.

We are focused on enrolling highperforming students

from all socio-economic areas. The demands for financial aid grows as tuition does, and financial support is a key in maintaining our enrollment."

The Enrollment Management Office understands that a Chaminade education is a gift for a young man, and that families sacrifice much for their son to attend. Benjamin Franklin once said, "An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest." From this investment, we see well-prepared, polished young men graduate each year. By the time, each student walks across the stage, his personal confidence and moral character have grown to the point where he has become a leader within the school and the community. He has been challenged along the way by many teachers, coaches, mentors, and classmates. He has developed the skills necessary to be successful in college and life and has established his own meaning of 'Esto Vir.'

Fine Arts Chaminade Drama's production of How to Succeed in Business‌ Nominated for Five Awards!

I

n early May, the 2018 St. Louis High School Musical Theatre Awards nominations were announced and Chaminade's production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying was honored to receive five nominations. Recognition included two nominees in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category: senior Emma Resek (Marquette High School) for her portrayal of Smitty and sophomore Grace Costello (Homeschool) for her portrayal of Hedy LaRue. Also honored with a nomination was Chaminade's Director of Drama Rob Grumich for Outstanding Direction. The production

also received recognition in the areas of Outstanding Ensemble and Scenic Design & Execution.

The St. Louis High School Musical Theatre Awards, sponsored by The Muny, The Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation, and The Fabulous Fox is designed to celebrate outstanding achievement in high school musical theatre. This year thirty-two schools from throughout the St. Louis metro area participated by having their productions evaluated by a panel of theatre professionals. The process culminates with

an award ceremony show on June 10 at The Fabulous Fox.

Band Travels Lead to Successes

T

he Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, and Percussion Ensemble traveled to Northern Illinois University in DeKalb and to Chicago for their annual performance trip in April. At NIU, the students enjoyed a performance by the NIU Jazz Orchestra featuring renowned guitarist Fareed Haque, and played in clinics with NIU jazz, percussion, and band professors. We were privileged to re-connect with Mr. Reggie Thomas at NIU, where he is coordinator of the jazz studies program, conducts the Jazz

Orchestra, and teaches jazz piano. He is one of the most esteemed jazz educators in the U.S., and has previously appeared here at Chaminade as a clinician and an artist at the MLK Jazz Workshops and Celebration.

In Chicago, the Wind Ensemble earned a "Superior" rating, and the Symphonic Band an "Excellent" rating at the Dixie Classic Festival.

Groups from Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, and New York performed at this festival. This followed the "I" Exemplary Rating earned by the Wind Ensemble at the MSHSAA State Band event on February 28.

Jack Ponder '20, a member of the Symphonic Band, was presented an award for his clarinet solo at the Dixie Classic Festival.

Band trips allow band members to perform for esteemed music educators from around the country, be evaluated on a national scale, and hear other school groups from around the country, in addition to building family spirit within the band and visiting culturally significant locations at each destination. Past trips have taken the bands to such locations as New Orleans, Washington, DC, and in 2006, to Australia.

s a girl, Violet was wounded in a tragic accident that left her face dramatically scarred and her sense of self-worth even moreso. With enough money finally saved, she's traveling across the Deep South in 1964 towards a miracle – the healing touch of a TV evangelist who will make her beautiful.

Although she may not succeed in having the scar on her face healed, Violet is able to repair those scars that are lying deeper than her skin.

On the way, she meets a young, African-soldier whose love for her reaches past her physical "imperfections."

Red Devil Athletics Varsity Baseball

T

he Red Devils started off slow as we participated in the Troy tournament to kick off the season. We opened our new stadium with three home games vs Marquette, Liberty, and Ladue then hosted our first MCC school, SLUH, after Easter. We had several experienced players returning from last year's squad, including Henry Gladson '18 on the mound, Hunter Shaheen '19 catching, Tyler Fogarty '19 playing second base, first baseman Teddy Phelan '19, pitcher Luke Gilliam '19, outfielder Cam Allen '18, and pitcher/catcher Geoffrey Camfield '19. We relied heavily on their leadership as they brought our younger players into the fold.

Varsity Baseball finished with a record of 17-12, falling to DeSmet in the finals of the District Championship.

Keyyaun Batchman '19, and Harrison Vickers '20 were honorable mention selections.

During the season, we won the championship in our holiday tournament as well as the Belleville East Tournament. We were able to win our fourth consecutive District Championship, as well as advancing to our fourth consecutive Final-Four appearance. We finished as state-runner up in MSHSAA Class 5.

he 2018 season was truly memorable – for a number of reasons. In what will probably become a yearly trip, the upperclassmen went south to seek warmer weather. The first match of the season took

his was an exciting season for the Chaminade Varsity Basketball team.

We finished 7-1 in the MCC. We had numerous all-conference selections: Jericole Hellems '18 was the conference player of the year, Jadis White '18 was first-team allconference and Luke Kasubke '20 was secondteam all-conference. Henry Gladson '18,

place along the Gulf Coast with a win against Gulf Shores High School. That victory was followed by a loss against Alabama powerhouse McGill-Toolen Catholic High School. After returning to St. Louis, the rest of the matches found the varsity squad with a 5-5 record.

The first two tournaments of the season were cancelled due to storms, but on April 9, the squad tied for first place at the Bulldog Battle at Winghaven Country Club. Junior Zach Walsh led all golfers with a 69 (-2) and the team finished tied for first place (306). The final tournament before districts was the Webster Cup, where the players battled 31 degrees and snow. They were able to finish in the top ten.

At the District tournament, the squad played against several of the best teams in the area. They shot a solid 300, with sophomore Josh Heidenry leading the charge with a 71 (E).

At the Sectional tournament, the team fired a 303, which earned them a spot in the state tournament. Senior captain Colin Stolze was medalist for the team with a 73 (+1).

The State tournament was played at Swope Memorial Golf Course in Kansas City.

After the first day, the Chaminade linksters found themselves in third place, only one point behind second place Rockhurst (and 15 strokes behind eventual state champions Rock Bridge).

title with a blistering 67 (-5). The team rose to the challenge on the second day, with several players improving their day one scores by 10 strokes. With a team score of 298, the squad moved past Rockhurst to claim second place. he rugby team had a great second year after being reestablished last year. The returning players built upon their knowledge and passion for the game and led the team to an undefeated regular season in league matches. Senior captain Peter Wohlstadter, as well as Cole Sepac '18 and Riku Kasuga '19, were the major offensive Try scorers for the team. Carl Schmittgens '18 and Fisher Vrabely '18 led our defensive line and the team in tackling. Other notable contributors were juniors Cory O'Dell and Lukas Dompeling who called the plays and distributed the ball to our runners.

These players led a great crew of returning sophomores and the new freshmen throughout the season. The season itself started slow with narrow wins against the first few opponents but after the Rugger Fest tournament, the game started to click for the new players this season and the games leading up to post-season play were dominant wins.

In the state semi-final, Chaminade came back from a fifteen-point deficit at half to beat last year's finalists, Winnetonka, but unfortunately fell short in the state final to the Liberty City Jays. The returning players next year will undoubtedly build upon this year's success and help Chaminade build a very strong rugby program.

arsity water polo ended their season with a loss to Lindbergh in the district tournament. The team finished with a record of 10-10-1 after playing a challenging schedule. Senior and Co-captain Jonathan Struckoff finished the season leading the team with 111 goals and 28 assists. Jonathan was awarded the Connor Keefe Varsity Player of the Year Award. He also earned First Team AllConference honors and Third Team All-District Honors. Senior Brennan Boyette also earned First Team All-Conference Honors and received the team award for Most Improved Player.

Brennan finished the season with 33 goals and nine assists. Senior goalkeeper and co-captain Jimmy Schneithorst was the team's defensive player of the year. Jimmy played every minute (554) of the season in goal. Chaminade's JV team also had a good year. The team was comprised of ten freshman and sophomores, who all played water polo for the first time.

he 2017-18 Red Devils wrestling team had a great season. The highlight of the year was senior captain Danny Conley winning his second consecutive state championship. Danny moved up to the 285pound weight class after winning state last year at 220. He finished the season with a 46-1, and had 169 career victories while wrestling at Chaminade. For the second year in a row he was named Academic All-State by the Missouri Wrestling Association.

Sophomore Sam Schultz qualified for the state tournament for the second year in row, entering that competition as the #5-ranked wrestler in the state at 113 pounds.

He compiled a 31-12 record on the year, and eclipsed 70 career wins. Sam finished in the top-4 at five tournaments, including placing first at the Chaminade and MICDS Tournaments.

Senior captain Brad Sanchez ended his career as a Red Devil with a terrific season.

Brad had a 28-12 record, and won 79 matches in his four-years at Chaminade. He also placed in the top-10 in four tournaments in 2017-18

Junior Alex Hart performed well in all the tournaments he competed in, including a championship at the Chaminade Tournament.

Sophomore Braden Luectefeld made huge strides this season, including an exciting victory at the district tournament to finish the year.

Six first-year wrestlers were great additions to the Red Devil lineup. R.J. Jackson, Anthony Bradford, Ricardo Champion, Jack Mattingly, Mitch Gamma and Mark Shapiro all have a bright future ahead of them on the mat at Chaminade.

Consecrating Ourselves to Jesus Through Mary

A

s Catholics, we always strive to better love and follow Jesus Christ, and as Marianists, we hold up Mary as our role model in this endeavor, so that we can go "Through the Mother to the Son." Chaminade's Mission Integration Team has taken this Marianist motto to heart as we have designed a plan for how we can best integrate the Marianist charism into the school's identity over the next four years. Our goal is to help all members of the Chaminade Family go "Through the Mother to the Son" by bringing Marian spirituality more to the forefront of the school's religious devotion.

Several Chaminade faculty members have led the way in this undertaking. Carla Struckhoff, Brett Desnoyer, and Margie Korb all felt a tugging on their hearts to come closer

and closer to Mary. After discussing their mutual callings, they planned a faculty retreat in February followed by a several-month-long formation program that many of the faculty and staff joined. The program is based on a doit-yourself retreat called 33 Days to Morning Glory by Fr. Michael E. Gaitley, MIC, and it culminates in consecrating oneself through our Blessed Mother. Doing three of the thirtythree lessons per week, the faculty retreatants followed the 33 Days program from midFebruary through May 14, the day after the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima. Noel Pretila was one of the retreatants, and he said that "this step of consecrating myself to Jesus through Mary was a natural one given my return to Catholicism six years ago. The focus on Mary was very beneficial."

Another group intends to work their way through the consecration program during the summer, and over time the Chaminade faculty and staff will continue to form ourselves closer to Mary's heart through prayer and retreat opportunities. Now that the faculty have experienced this initial formation process, we plan next year to lead the Chaminade Family (with a focus on the students) closer to Mary by presenting celebrations and catechesis around various Marian feasts throughout the year while also focusing on multiple Marian images and apparitions from around the world.

Please keep us in your prayers as we pursue this, and please continue checking Chaminade communications to see where our Marian spiritual focus will take the Chaminade Family.

Brian Askren '18 and Whole Kids Outreach

E

verybody on campus recognizes recent graduate Brian Askren as a staple in the Skip Viragh Center where he has helped to keep the lights (and sound) on since he was a middle schooler. He has put in over a thousand hours at the Skip and is the longesttenured member of staff. He is such a beacon of hard work and service at Chaminade that when it was time for seniors to self-nominate for the Archbishop John L. May Service Award – Chaminade's highest service honor – many seniors with outstanding service records didn't even apply because they thought that Brian deserved the award, and they wanted him to receive it. But, Brian's work at the

Skip is not even the most impressive service that he has done for the Chaminade Family.

In the fall of 2015, Brian approached Chaminade's service coordinator, Kevin Becvar.

Kevin relates, "he told me about his summer service project at Whole Kids Outreach in Ellington, Missouri, a summer camp for rural poor kids ages 4-12, that provides them with fun, community-building opportunities to make them whole, like swimming, arts and crafts, and horseback riding." Brian saw WKO's program as being so valuable, that he wanted to see how Chaminade could join the effort. Fast-forward three years, and Chaminade sent a group of seven students to WKO in June for a week of service immersion work for the third summer in a row. Junior Luke Branson has gone twice, and he said that "I had never known that there were such poor people so close to home. Whole Kids changed my perspective on poverty and helped me to build a stronger sense of empathy

for the poor."

Because of Brian's initiative, dozens of Red Devils have experienced this eye-opening program, and Chaminade has gained a great new partnering service agency.

As a true man of Esto Vir, Brian Askren says that his favorite parts of his service at WKO are the fun that he has and the community that he builds while he is working at the camp and interacting with the children.

Brian relates that one of his favorite quotes about service is from Sr. Anne Francioni, SSND, who runs WKO. "She says that 'it's not them and us when it comes to service. It's just us. It is all of us on this Earth, and we figure it out together." Brian has done an excellent job of figuring out Christ's call to care for the poor and of recognizing that we are all children of God. He is a model of service to the Chaminade Family!

The Jazz Combo I group appeared on FOX2 News in January to promote Chaminade's Martin Luther King Jazz Concert.

Members include Christopher Schaeffler '18, Kenneth Damper '20, Jesse Mose '20, Josh Pryor '20, Roman Mellado-Forte '20, Quin Rizer '21, and Akash Nandakumar '21.

The HOSA Future Health Professionals Association Chaminade Chapter was chartered this fall by Blake Chrismer '19 and Sam Signorelli '19. The leadership team of Sam, Blake, Ben Reimler '19, and Bryce Bolden '19 recruited about fifteen members for the inaugural year. At the start of Holy Week eleven members traveled to the Missouri State HOSA conference, where six members took part in tests of knowledge and skill.

Students tested in one of four areas: Behavioral Health, Medical Terminology, Sports Medicine, and Medical Law and Ethics.

In their first year as a HOSA Chapter and at their first competition, Rhys Prosser '19, scored second in the state of Missouri for Medical Law and Ethics. He is eligible to attend and compete at the HOSA International conference hosted in Dallas this summer.

Tyler Fogarty '19 was named St. Luke's Urgent Care Athlete of the Week for the first week of May. Tyler's four home runs and seven RBIs in the week was just a part of why he has received this honor!

Jack Bick '62 published a book, Be Mission Critical: Own Your Dream Career, for people who want to elevate their career.

"I'm in charge of a team of about thirty people.

We create the environments for the film – so if it doesn't talk, it's probably our responsibility.

John Doerr '69 recently published a book titled Measure What Matters: How Google, Bono, and the Gates Foundation Rock the World with OKRs.

Dr. Dan Hoernschemeyer '90 traveled to South America for a two-week international fellowship sponsored by the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA). Dan traveled to Santiago, Chile; Buenos Aries, Argentina; and Sao Paulo, Brazil to collaborate with other pediatric orthopaedic surgeons.

t is with great pleasure and pride that I write my first letter as President of the Alumni Association. I'd be remiss if I didn't begin by thanking those who have served in this position before me and from whom I've learned a great deal. Peter Sheahan '82 and Mike Schlueter '91 are great examples of Esto Vir spirit. They have both done a fantastic job in growing alumni participation and improving overall quality of our events. Thank you for your guidance, friendship, and leadership, gentlemen.

As the year comes to an end, I hope that you have had the chance to visit campus. The improvements are truly stunning. From the Skip to the new baseball stadium, Chaminade has transformed from aging buildings to a stateof-the-art campus with more improvements on the horizon. If you've ever considered attending a school or alumni event, I'd highly recommend you give it a shot. There is no better day than to today to reengage with the school.

As always, the young men of Chaminade continue to impress. I recently had the opportunity to attend the Ethics and Career Day for the senior class. This was my eighth year serving as a table moderator. Every year I come away more impressed than the last by the quality of Esto Vir gentlemen whom

our administration, teachers, and families are producing. As society as a whole seems more divisive, negative and hostile, I take comfort in spending time with these future leaders. The Class of 2018 will do great things. They have and will continue to make us proud!

On a personal note, I've looked forward to this opportunity for several years – to thank the men who enriched my Chaminade experience and served as examples of Esto Vir in my life. Chris Chiburis was the first person I met at Chaminade and to this day continues to be a friend. He made a clumsy seventh grader with braces feel welcome. To the late Fr. Robert Osborne – our talks about life, family, and faith stick with and guide me to this day.

To Jim Chrismer '85, who taught this doughy freshman that sometimes you have to leave some skin from your shin on the plyometric boxes to get to where you want to be. And to the countless other teachers, counselors and coaches that took an interest in me. I can never thank you enough!

In closing, Chaminade is a family. I recently had a dear friend pass away. She had sons who graduated from Chaminade several years back and, not surprisingly, multiple teachers took time out of their day to attend the funeral. When my wife, Kathleen, and I

had our first child (Robert Francis Marischen…Class of 2035), the first piece of mail we opened when we returned from the hospital was a package from the advancement office with an "Esto Vir Baby" bib congratulating us.

Chaminade will be there for you in your best hours and your worst. You just have to be willing to allow them the opportunity.

Our alumni base is full of dynamic and charismatic men and families who have so much to offer. Please consider sharing your time and talents with the school! If you'd like to become involved with Chaminade, I'd strongly urge you to reach out to me or to David Nolda, Chaminade's Director of Alumni and Constituent Relations. Matt Ross '92 retired from the Army and currently works as a government contractor in Omaha, Nebraska. Matt and his wife, Ann, have four children.

Bill Barnes '95 and his wife, Darby, welcomed a daughter to the family in January.

Major Mike Hayek '98 is the Director of Operations, 7th Air Support Operations Squadron, Fort Bliss, Texas, for the United States Air Force. He is currently serving as the Squadron Director of Operations and Division Air Liaison Officer at the Army installation.

Cody Stokes '03 has written and directed an independent feature film, "The Ghost Who Walks." Cody filmed in St. Louis during the 2017-18 holiday season. The film is one of eight to be selected for the 2018 US IN PROGRESS program at the Champs-ÉlysÊes Film Festival, held in June.

Antione Lawrence '04 was recently recognized at the St. Louis American Foundation's Salute to Young Leaders event.

The event recognizes the achievements and service of twenty African-Americans under the age of forty.

Jacob Stokes '05 serves as a legislative assistant (Foreign Policy and Defense) in the office of U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar.

Steve Della Camera '06 and his wife, Alyssa, welcomed twin daughters, Eve and Rose, in March. Steve's twin brother is John '06.

Eric Senseman '07 etched his name among the elite runners in the 55th annual JFK 50 Mile, the nation's oldest and largest ultramarathon, in November.

Eric led wire-towire as he convincingly captured his first JFK victory on his third try, completing the historic 50.2-mile race in 5 hours, 46 minutes and 54 seconds in cold, rainy conditions.

Christopher Abel '08 works for his family's company, Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate. He is living in Glendale with his wife and two sons.

Tyler Stokes '10 is a musician/songwriter and is the front man of Delta Sol Revival.

Bradley Beal '11 was the fastest player in NBA history to reach 800 career 3-pointers during a game against the New York Knicks.

He also received his first NBA All-Star selection this year.

Scott Meiners '11 has joined the Army and is currently stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Scott will start ranger school once he finishes basic training.

Ian Miller '11 is currently touring and playing keyboards with country music artist, Brett Eldredge.

Andy Koeger '12 works in Los Angeles as a commercial and music video director. Last fall, he directed a 90-second regional Super Bowl commercial that aired at halftime statewide in Georgia.

Philip Mannino '14 will be pursuing his PhD at Yale University in the Department of Cell Biology. He is interested in the molecular biology of cell signaling that is involved in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimers.

Mitch Weller '14 is a senior at Westminster College majoring in Security Studies and Philosophy. Mitch was recently selected to represent his school at the American Bar Association's 27th Annual Review of the Field of Law and National Security CLE Conference in Washington, D.C.

Jayson Tatum '16 played a big part of the Boston Celtics' post-season run. He became the youngest player to ever score at least twenty points in four straight playoff games.

In Game 3, he became the first Celtics rookie to score twenty points in five straight playoff games (Larry Bird had held the record with four games). At the end of his playoff run, he joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the only rookies in playoff history to record ten games of twenty or more points scored during their first playoff runs. In May he was named to the NBA AllRookie First Team.

On June 1, several Chaminade staff travelled to Springfield, Missouri, to see the San Antonio Missions play the Springfield Cardinals.

The game was truly a Chaminade affair as the Chaminade group visited with former Red Devil Austin Allen '12, a catcher for the AA San Diego Padres affiliate, and Nate Lucas '08, a radio announcer for the Cardinals.

The Chaminade faction was also fortunate enough to be in the booth when Nate called Austin's 6th inning home run to put the Missions ahead. We couldn't have scripted the experience better!

Adam Glassl '13 is participating in the Engineers in Leadership rotational program with Emerson. Adam spent his first year in the program in Atlanta, Georgia, working with the company's Commercial and Residential Solutions business. This summer Adam will head to Shanghai, China, to spend a year working in Emerson's high growth AsianPacific Automation Solutions business platform.

Tom Barlow '14 was recently drafted by the New York Red Bulls in the second round of the MLS Super Draft.

Hampus was named Mid-States hockey player of the week and was treated to a Blues hockey game with teammate and classmate Jonathan Struckoff '18. Seeing Hampus in the CCP hockey jersey, now former St. Louis Blue and Chaminade alumnus Paul Stastny '04 skated over during the game and handed Hampus his hockey stick.

Chaminade opened as a boarding school back in 1910 and that boarding tradition continues today with students from all over the United States (six states) and the world (ten countries). The resident program offers a unique way for the faculty and staff to further implement Chaminade's mission globally and, conversely, allows for rich cultural diversity within our own classrooms.

A Chaminade Pillar Kevin Brennan '71 Retires - Dan Karcher, CCP Teacher

I

n late August of 1964, a mop-headed kid first walked through the doors of Chaminade. He had on a tie which was part of the dress code back then, took his first shower in the locker room, and had no idea that he would spend his life at Chaminade. His name was Kevin Brennan.

KB, as he is affectionately known, graduated from Chaminade in 1971 and began college as a pre-med student. Though things did not go exactly according to plan, he did pick up certification to teach science prior to graduating. Pursuing a degree in education, KB did his student teaching at Chaminade.

That spring, he landed a full time job teaching middle school science at his alma mater for the fall of 1975. The starting teaching salary in 1975 was $8,300. This included coaching freshmen football. For a new teacher starting a family, money was tight. He lived paycheck to paycheck. His first year of teaching, he wore a suit to school every day and was not allowed to take off his coat. There was one nice perk: free lunch was provided for all the teachers. That first year, he helped with swimming and track.

The next year, he received an extra $300 to continue with those two sports.

After three years in the science department, KB moved to the Physical Education Department and the rest is history.

Gray House's annual cardboard boat regatta has been rechristened the Kevin Brennan Regatta in KB's honor. Each Mentor Group builds a sea-worthy vessel and oars using only cardboard and duct tape, which must ferry two students two lengths of the pool.

Since that time, he has become a fixture in the department and a pillar of Chaminade.

One does not become a pillar of a community simply by virtue of longevity.

There are positive contributions made through nurturing and cultivating personal relationships with students, parents, and peers. Guiding a team whether it be in success or defeat demands a commitment to both individuals and the team. By dedicating one's life to a single profession and school, you cannot help but serve as a model of Marianist education in all that you do.

KB is a true Marianist educator but he points to his own mentor as the ideal role model for anyone to follow. Much of his success today he attributes to his favorite teacher and mentor. Coach Don Ohlms '53, took KB under his wing early on in his career.

Like KB, Don had a long career at Chaminade.

He worked as physical education teacher, varsity football coach, athletic director, and admissions director. From Don, KB learned the value of building personal relationships with each individual. Don was a model of Marianist education before the five characteristic we know so well today were even formally articulated by the Marianists. Like Don, KB is a man of faith. In the classroom, on the field, or in the pool, KB believes in providing an integral quality education. Emphasis on team spirit and being able to adapt to any situation are hallmarks of KB as a coach and teacher. Finally, KB offers his service to anyone in need. One of the most valuable things he learned from Don was scouting. As the freshmen football coach, he was the only one on the freshmen level to scout. By scouting the competition, he could read the opponents. One particularly memorably game against Clayton, when they put their back in motion, his team knew exactly what to do. Success was theirs. Perhaps his favorite memory of coaching was in 1986 when he was asked to help coach varsity football with his mentor Don Ohlms.

KB has had a long storied career at Chaminade. In addition to teaching for fortythree years, he has coached football and track for twenty-five years, swimming for forty-one, and even had a stint as seventh grade soccer coach for two years. As a teacher he has taught at every level. He has been the assistant athletic director for the past twenty years as well as the PE Department's chair for that length of time.

In his time here, KB has lived through eight principals and five athletic directors.

The goal of every coach is to take an athlete and make him better: help an average guy become good, a good guy become great, a great guy an all-American, and to do the same in the classroom. Many years ago, students were required to wear a tie until May 1. On April 30, many students would cut their ties.

In the early 70s during the energy crisis, the president decided that to save energy, school would drop every other Monday and Friday creating four day weeks. To compensate for the lost time, 30 minutes were added to each day. This only lasted one semester.

Electric benches in the big gym were a major improvement. Prior to this the coaches had to pull the bleachers out and push them in every day.

KB has worn out two stationary bikes while watching countless television shows from the 70s and 80s.

They have better training and are more knowledgeable.

What makes Chaminade so special that you would spend your entire professional career here? "Chaminade is a special place. And what makes it the special place that it is, is the people. Chaminade is filled with good people.

I have had great working relationships and true friendships here. You don't spend so much time at a place and not develop long-lasting connections to the people."

Tom Fernandez, the fifth athletic director KB has worked with, offered these thoughts on KB. "KB endears himself to the kids. Having them call him KB helps form a relationship with them. He gets down to their level. KB knows the pool and the program inside and out. He has run the pool for the last ten years. KB is an

old-school guy. By virtue of his longevity, he has connections and contacts with generations of athletes and alumni. He helps to keep traditions alive and yet is open to new things.

His experience and connections with the kids will be missed."

Mike Derkits gave the following reflection when asked about his fellow teacher and coach. "KB is a true example of our motto Esto Vir. His dedication and commitment to Chaminade is second to none. He is a master teacher and coach who has a unique ability to develop genuine and lasting relationships with our students. He has impacted our school and community more than he will ever know. It was such a great pleasure to learn from him and he will be sorely missed."

KB is retiring. But don't be surprised to see him here with great regularity. He plans to

help Keith Mug with the swim team next year.

He will also continue with Forest Hills Country Club offering summer employment to all Chaminade students from his life-saving classes.

Then there will be some time on the farm, the occasional work in his son's restaurant, and every retiree's dream: perfecting the golf game.

At the end of the school year, KB will leave with a lot less hair. The tie has been replaced with a baseball cap and a Hawaiian shirt. He has taken over 15,000 showers at Chaminade with a few more in the future. And he leaves knowing he has touched the lives of thousands of young men, been a master teacher and coach, a good friend and mentor, and has truly established his place in Chaminade history as a giant.

Thank you, KB, for all you have given to Chaminade, your very life!

The Impact of Endowed Scholarships

W

hen the endowed scholarship program began in 2001, only a handful of students were receiving just over $10,000 in scholarship support.

Seventeen years later, the program has grown to seventy-six endowed scholarships producing more than $480,000 awarded to 146 students for the 2018-2019 school year. Scholarship awards range from $700 to full tuition (excluding books and fees).

Endowed Scholarships have been started by alumni, parents, families, and reunion classes. Some were created to honor or memorialize loved ones. The motivation behind the creation of each of our endowed scholarships is very different but all are living tributes to their overall Chaminade experience.

The Annual Scholarship Luncheon is a beautiful day where generosity meets gratitude.

Conor Driscoll '18, the recipient of the Father Norbert G. Moellering, S.M. Scholarship, shared these thoughts at this year's luncheon: "Having this scholarship has allowed me to ease some of the financial pressure that education puts on our parents. I'm sure all of the parents here

today can understand just how much relief this brings, and how great it feels to have this opportunity. Thank you once again to the Moellering family, for making this education more attainable not only for myself, but for students of the past and future to come. Your generosity is not only a gift to the student and his family, but a priceless gift to the world: a good citizen."

Conor will be attending the University of California at Los Angeles in the fall.

Throughout his time at Chaminade, he has served as a house captain in eighth grade and once more as a senior, one of the chief editors of the yearbook, and the captain of the swim and dive team. Conor is an example of just one of the 132 outstanding scholarship recipients in 2017-2018.

he Alumni Association Board of Directors has the responsibility of reviewing candidates for Chaminade's Alumnus of the Year Award.

To achieve this most distinguished honor, the honoree must have given his time, skills and/or resources to his alma mater; he must have been involved in school and/or alumni activities; he must have given of himself to his community outside of Chaminade; and he must have exemplified the spirit of Esto Vir in his daily life.

Honoree Highlights: • Scott has served on our Alumni Board of Directors for ten years, including several years as President. He began a new term this year.

• Scott and his wife, Victoria, are regular attendees at Chaminade events, including the Esto Vir Auction, Alumni Golf Classic, and the annual Trivia Night. At the Auction, Scott and Victoria have spearheaded the Wine Cork Pull for many years.

• He is a member of the Fathers' Club, and has been involved with the Christmas Tree Lot and been the Grill Master for the Family Spirit BBQ at our annual Open House, feeding hundreds of potential Red Devils and their families.

• Scott's commitment to Chaminade is evidenced in his two sons, Richard '07 and David '15, who are third generation Chaminade alumni from the Bader Family.

• The Fathers' Club recognized Scott with the Bro. Fred Weisbruch Award in 2015, when his son, David, was a senior, in appreciation of his service and dedication to Chaminade.

• Scott is a generous and consistent donor since 1986, contributing to numerous scholarships and the Chaminade Fund. He and Victoria established the Richard J. Bader '51 Memorial Scholarship in 2004, in honor of his late father.

• Off Chaminade's campus, Scott was presented with the 2017 Mel Lowenstein Award in recognition of his many years of dedicated service to Fair St. Louis serving in a variety of roles.

he Chaminade Honorary Alumnus award is presented to someone who is not an alumnus of our school, but who has served Chaminade in an exemplary fashion; the candidate's life should reflect that he has embraced and lived the mission of Chaminade; and the candidate should have manifested a long-term loyalty to Chaminade.

John Lawrence began teaching at Chaminade in 2002 when his son, Tyler '07, was in eighth grade. Prior to Chaminade, John worked as an engineer at Boeing. But in 1999, John felt God calling him to another profession: teaching. So, at forty years old, John left a prominent position at Boeing to begin a career in education. He taught in the Valley Park School District for three years before Mike Loyet, his close friend and former Chaminade associate principal, told him about an opening for a job teaching technology at Chaminade.

To say that John left a legacy during his time at Chaminade is an understatement. In August 2009, John was inspired while he and his wife, Carol, were streaming one of their daughter, Jacey's, Dominican University volleyball games live online. Using his passion for technology, John founded CSPN in January 2010 with a group of students and quickly turned it into one of the most popular clubs at Chaminade.

The greatest legacy that John left at Chaminade, however, was his love for his students and all whom he met. John never missed an opportunity to brighten someone's day with his contagious sense of joy, always offering a smile, a friendly ear to listen, and one of his famous "Man Lessons of the Day."

On November 5, 2015, the Chaminade community was shaken by the news that John had suffered a heart attack and passed away early that morning. What started as a day like any other, quickly turned into a day of remembrance for a man who meant so much to so many people on this campus and beyond.

Tyler Stokes '10, who helped found CSPN with John, put it best after John's passing: "Mr. Lawrence didn't do CSPN for the numbers, he did it for families.

He used his talents and interests to better our community and world. He was one of the most kindhearted and selfless men I have met."

Greatest Show on Turf - Danny Sheehan '19

T

here are no unimportant games in the MCC, but this particular game was even more significant than most. This was a must-win for Chaminade. CBC had already beaten Chaminade earlier in the season, and with CBC in Chaminade's district, the outcome of this game would likely determine the final seeding for the district tournament.

It was the bottom of the seventh inning, and the game was tied 1-1. Tyler Fogarty '19 slowly stepped up to the plate to face CBC's closer, Josh Plohr. Chaminade's lineup had already knocked out CBC's starter, freshman phenom and Vanderbilt commit Christian Little, and with one out in the bottom of the last inning, the Red Devils were hoping that Tyler could just find a way to start a rally. Instead, Fogarty ended the game with a single swing, sending the ball sailing over the outfield wall.

As Tyler rounded the bases and his teammates ran out of the dugout to mob him at home, CSPN announcer Christian Piccioni '19 cemented this moment in Chaminade history with a memorable call, "GET OUT BALL! GET OUT!" It was one of my favorite moments in my baseball career, and hopefully the first of many in Chaminade's beautiful new baseball stadium.

The new baseball stadium was completed in mid-March in time for the home opener, and will now serve as the foundation of the Chaminade baseball program. The decision to build a new field came two years ago by Tom Fernandez, Chaminade's Athletic Director,

Fr. Ralph, and members of the Board of Trustees, and is part of a much larger campus improvement initiative. The decision to move it next to the football field was made because it was the only spot on campus that had room for it, and the hill on the eastern edge made it possible to elevate the stands and give the complex a stadium-like atmosphere.

When it was decided that the new field would be made, the first step was deciding upon a contractor to plan and build the stadium. The answer was an easy one. Byrne and Jones Construction had done most of the recent sport improvement projects. They built the old practice turf field in 2010, they resurfaced the track in 2015, and turfed the football field in 2016. Byrne and Jones had done a great job with those projects, so they won the chance to build the new stadium. The stadium was completed just in time for the home opener against Liberty High School, and everyone agrees that they outdid themselves.

Fittingly, Chaminade's new field was completed in the 100th year of the Chaminade Baseball program, making it just the latest in a century of achievements. Undoubtedly, the biggest moments are our two state championships in 1992 and 1998. Varsity Head Coach Chris Chiburis said, "My best moment as a coach was in my first year of coaching in 1998. Being a part of the state championship team, making it to Columbia and just being able to experience and see the amount of work and effort that those guys went through, it was pretty cool."

The 1992 and 1998 championship teams were invited back to Chaminade on April 6 of this year for a reunion, and the players were joined by many of their former mentors and coaches, including Coach Chiburis, Coach Massa, Coach Francis, and Coach Wibbenmeyer. The players took batting practice on the field, and

then had some barbeque and reminisced about old times. While this was going on, the alumni spent time talking with a number of current varsity players, and we were all impressed by the significance of their achievements and the level of their commitment. Watching them laugh and joke with their buddies and talk about their championship made us want to win the state title even more.

One thing that the state champion teams continually mentioned was the new field.

Obviously the new field is beautiful, but more importantly, they told us that it would provide us with a unique opportunity to elevate the way we play, and to help us build the culture of the program. As Coach Chiburis said, "It's a pride thing. The new field gives the players a reason to play their best."

The first step in establishing a culture of excellence is to improve our play on the field, and the new complex gives us a unique chance to develop and refine our skills. The turf means we don't have rainouts for practices or games, which will allow for more hours of practice and therefore more reps. The square batting cages beyond the right field fence allow the players to practice hitting to all fields, to see exactly where the ball goes, and to practice making in-game adjustments.

As a baseball player who has played on many youth, high school, college, and even one professional field in my life, I can say with absolute certainty that the new stadium is second to none. The playing surface provides no bad hops and makes the game smoother, and the stadium atmosphere makes playing so much more enjoyable. The new stadium is an indicator as to how far the program has come in its hundred-year history, and I am extremely proud to be a part of that history.
