From the President

It is truly amazing to think about how quickly this school year has gone. It feels like just yesterday that the hallways were buzzing with all of our Chaminade Gentlemen preparing for a new school year. As summer approaches the hallways become quiet. Luckily for me, I have the ghosts of Chaminade to keep me company.

Alas, there will be some noise this summer between our various summer camps, facility improvements and the installation of our new synthetic turf athletic field. This is a truly exciting time to be a part of the Chaminade community. Chaminade students, faculty, staff, alumni, current parents, past parents, and friends continually help push our beloved school to be better. We all truly take the mission of Chaminade to heart.

While it is easy to look back over the year and share the amazing achievements of our Chaminade Family, I would like to challenge you to reflect on the difficult times as well. Who did you turn to when you needed guidance? Hopefully, your Marianist education played an integral role during those difficult times. Those core values at Chaminade truly help create a kinship with one another and as we all know, the bonds of Chaminade are never broken. The brotherhood, camaraderie, and true sense of family will echo in our mighty hallways for many years to come.

I wish you all a wonderful and safe summer break and we cannot wait to see you all again very soon!

Principal’s Corner A Moving Experience

I

recently accompanied nearly ninety eighth grade students on the annual spring experiential education trip to Washington, D.C. A highlight of the trip, and most memorable for many, is the time spent at Arlington National Cemetery. As I am sure is the case with most of the visitors to Arlington, upon entering the cemetery our students immediately understood the sacredness of the space, and their demeanor and attitude reflected as much. The steady deluge of rain throughout our visit made this strong sense of respect even more impressive.

The visit to Arlington traditionally includes a visit to the burial site of John F. Kennedy, a view of Robert E. Lee’s mansion, an observance of monuments and memorials, and, of course, witnessing the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Without fail, students are taken aback by the respect of those that guard the tomb and are in awe of the ritual, the precision, and the unwavering honor rightfully given to those who rest there. This year was no exception. Silent, still, and captivated, Chaminade students once again stood in admiration of the changing of the guard ceremony, and they did so in what can be described as miserable, cold, and rainy conditions.

Following the changing of the guard, we made our way – under the still heavy rain – to the Memorial Amphitheatre to regather, get a few minutes of dry time, and to take in the impressive space often used for ceremonies to honor veterans. On our way to Kennedy’s tomb, we noticed a procession of military men and women to our right, many with musical instruments, and a full color guard. To our left, we noticed seven soldiers standing at attention with rifles. As we looked to the middle, and in the distance, we saw a horse-drawn caisson bearing a flag-covered coffin. Some students were viewing different memorials and monuments, and some were talking quietly. As it became clear that a military funeral service was beginning, they began to assemble as a group to observe. I assumed it would be only for a moment, given the weather. When I offered them the option to move on and get back to

the comforts of the bus, they refused. They wanted to stay, watch, and experience. Once again they rose to the occasion; understood the significance of what they were witnessing; and, for twenty minutes, stood in the rain to experience something they may very well never experience again. They experienced the presentation of the colors, “Taps” on the bugle, the twenty-one-gun salute, and the presentation of the flag to the family of the deceased. They recognized something as special, unique, and worthy of the inconveniences that inundated the circumstances of the day.

The teachers on the trip could very well have told them about full military funeral honors in the classroom; could have probably even found a video of a ceremony – much as the teachers could have found a video of the changing of the guard. Instead our students had a profound experience of the ceremonies, and their understanding and appreciation of both are much deeper as a result. Most likely, the impression made on them is indelible.

On the same Thursday and Friday in April, over 2000 miles separated the sixth graders in the Grand Tetons of Wyoming and the eighth

graders in Washington, D.C., and all while eleventh graders were in rural Missouri for Junior Leadership Training. Hundreds of Chaminade students were off-campus, in very different environments throughout the country, learning.

Learning to lead and support one another; to appreciate history and understand the past; to care for God’s great creation and the complex ecosystem that has been left in our care.

The learning experiences offered through our Global Reach Program to our students are real and profound. In the course of seven years at Chaminade, our students have opportunities to experience the world around them in ways that are typically unheard of for students their age. We remain committed to providing these experiences because we know boys, and we know that hands-on learning is imperative in boys’ education. We are committed because we know that experiencing the world is far better than hearing about it.

AG: What is your most memorable experience this year?

RG: Two things from this year really stand out – one would be the volunteer work our cast of “The Boys Next Door” did at St. Louis ARC. It was really an eye opening, yet fun experience for so many of our students, and personally very gratifying. Secondly, would be sitting back and watching the final song of “Shrek” on closing night. I was in the balcony so was able to take in the whole stage full of performers exuding such enthusiasm while also observing the audience clapping and swaying along in their seats enjoying every minute of it.

The whole theatre was just a great big party at that moment and it’s one of the things I love about theatre. It made me very proud to be a part of that production with such a great group of students.

2016-2017 Drama Season

F

or the first time in many years, the drama department will be performing Shakespeare next season. Macbeth will open in October. To help students prepare, and as part of our Summer Camp programming, we will be offering an Acting: Shakespearean Style camp, June 20-24. This camp is available to all boys and girls entering grades 7-12. It will help prepare them for the upcoming production, if they’re in it, or generally improve their skills in tackling this challenging material.

pon graduating from Chaminade in 1982, Mark earned his BSBA in Economics from University of Missouri-Columbia in 1986, and his MBA in Finance from Saint Louis University in 1991. Currently serving clients as their Family CFO, Mark has been with Moneta since 2003. Prior to Moneta, Mark gained many years of industry experience with Price Waterhouse and A.G. Edwards in St. Louis.

Outside of his work at Moneta, Mark is heavily involved in the St. Louis community.

He has served on many boards, including time as a member of the board for the Mary Ryder Home, a member of the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation Planned Giving Committee and treasurer of Moneta Group Charitable Foundation.

However, Mark’s passion is Chaminade College Preparatory School. Since 2001 Mark has served as a member of the Alumni Board of Directors, and as their president for three years. Due to his continued dedication and enthusiasm for his alma mater, Mark was elevated to the Board of Trustees and has served as a member for four years, vice chair for one year and has completed his fifth year as the board chair. Working closely with Fr. Ralph and fellow trustees, Mark has been instrumental in improving the academic, athletic, and co-curricular programs offered at Chaminade over the past ten years. He has guided Chaminade in many ways that will impact the lives of our students for years to come.

Chaminade recognizes and extends its gratitude to Mark for his long hours of service and passion for his Marianist education. Mark enjoys playing golf and tennis. He and his wife, Cindy, have three children, Ellie, Michael ’13 and Matthew ’17.

Fine Arts Ryan Hoffman ’16, graduates on to bigger things with his guitar

haminade prides itself on fostering the gifts and talents of the young men who enter, challenging them to “Be A Man,” and then sending them off to college, ready for success at the next levels of education.

Ryan Hoffman ’16 has clearly taken his four years at Chaminade seriously, and has taken full advantage of the opportunities and challenges Chaminade presented to him. He has been an important part of the band program throughout high school (Band President as a senior), was a Grey House Captain this year, has been an active part of MLC, the NHS, Campus Ministry, Yearbook Club (Editor as a senior), played tennis for two years, and has completed a very challenging academic course of study.

Band director John Hahn took an opportunity to sit down with Ryan and asked him about his time at Chaminade, how he got interested in music, and what his plans are for the future.

Q. How long have you played music, how did you get started and who influenced you?

A. I started on the alto sax in fifth grade at my grade school, Immaculate Conception, in Columbia, Illinois. My older brother had played the sax, so I thought I would play the sax as well. About a year later, I added the guitar.

Q. When did you first realize your interest in music went beyond being a member of the grade school band?

A. The summer before eighth grade I attended a camp, hosted by Villa Duchesne, called Camp Jam. It was there I met Jim Peterik, a co-writer of the tune “Eye of the Tiger.” This camp

really got me enthused about music. The next summer I auditioned for the Jazz U program, and was accepted as a saxophonist.

Q. What brought you to Chaminade for high school?

A. I was looking for a school that would challenge me and take me out of my comfort zone. I shadowed here and really liked the Skip Viragh Center for the Arts!

Q. You have been an important part of the band program, playing in the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Combo I, Contemporary Music Group, Pep Band and Holiday Cheer Ensemble.

You have taken private lessons, played district and state level solos and ensembles, and was the guitarist in the Missouri All-State Jazz Band this year. What experiences in the CCP Bands have been most meaningful to you?

A. Most important to me have been the friendships I developed in the band. I did not feel really comfortable at Chaminade until the middle of sophomore year. I have really enjoyed the band trips, as they promote camaraderie and friendships among the band members.

In the bands, I also learned that everyone is important, that I have responsibility to others in the group and that it is important to honor the commitments I have.

Q. What are some of the musical things you have been involved with outside school?

A. I have been in the Jazz U program at Jazz St. Louis for four years, two on tenor sax, and two as guitarist. I played in the band Lunar Levitation, and founded and led the group Static Life.

We played around St. Louis, appeared on FOX2 News, and recorded a CD which can be found on iTunes. I have taken private lessons and have attended summer jazz camps here in St. Louis, in Wisconsin at Birch Creek and at NYU last summer in New York City.

Q. How would you describe your growth as a musician these past four years?

A. The first three years I lacked the maturity to really dig in. After talking to my teachers at CCP and at Jazz U about what it takes to be a pro musician, I really worked

hard this past year. I put music ahead of my social life and spent much more practice time developing my jazz guitar skills. My four weeks of jazz camps, spending time in NY City, and being involved with MLC helped me realize money is not the most important thing. This year I have done a lot of thinking. John Clayton, the director of the Missouri All-State Jazz Band, provided the members of the group with some great advice which helped me understand what I wanted to do, and how to approach being successful.

Q. Who are your favorite and most influential artists?

A. I will be playing guitar in a touring band, free-lancing and teaching guitar. I am also interested in film scoring, songwriting and music production.

We are proud of the man Ryan is, and of his accomplishments. Ryan will attend Belmont University in Nashville, where he has accepted a full, four year scholarship to study Commercial Guitar Performance.

An Old Way to Make New Art – David Buback ’17

T

his past winter, my advanced drawing/ printmaking class started a project that would later result in two field trips to Old North St. Louis to visit Firecracker Press.

Each student made one or two 18x12 blocks to use at the old fashioned press. All of our blocks revolved around one event: Viragh-Palooza. Viragh-Palooza is an event that occurs in early May and celebrates the artwork that different students have created throughout the year.

We designed our blocks with the intention of making posters to advertise Viragh-Palooza.

One student made a rocket flying to the moon, another carved out a group of dinosaurs walking in a line. All in all, there were ten prints made, each with a different style and theme.

As I mentioned earlier, we took two trips to Firecracker Press. The first trip was to have a tour of the press and see what machines we would be using to print our blocks. The next visit, after we finished carving our blocks about a month or so later, was to use the 19th century presses to print our blocks.

Firecracker provided us with different colors of ink and rollers to transfer the ink onto our blocks. The next step was to utilize one of three different printing presses to use pressure to transfer the ink from our blocks to paper. Some students finished their first block early and carved a second one to fit with their first so they could layer another color and fill in some of the empty spaces of their first print.

The final product was a mirror image of what we had carved earlier.

In the end, each student produced two or three prints with different colors and some with multiple layers. Overall, it was a really interesting experience to see all the different machines used to print, learn about how prints are made and how time consuming it is to do something that seems so simple.

Coach of the Year

The Life and Legacy of Coach Frank Bennett ’01 – Michael Lewis II ’16

C

haminade has had a lot of success over the years when it comes to sports, but in recent years, the basketball program has become the most prolific and talked-about sport on campus. The basketball program has had two players drafted into the NBA in the last decade, and we have had a number of guys sign to go to Division I colleges. And through it all, one constant has been our current coach, Frank Bennett.

Frank Bennett was promoted to head basketball coach in 2013 after spending time as a varsity assistant coach under Kelvin Lee and as the head coach of Chaminade’s JV team. Lee was Bennett’s coach when he was a player at Chaminade in the ’90s and ’00s. Coach Bennett has always praised his mentor. “I love Coach Lee to death,” Bennett said. “I was prepared to coach under him for however long he would have me, and whenever he chose to take off I would seriously consider it. But it’s not something I saw coming like this.”

Shortly after being hired, Coach Bennett realized that he had taken over arguably the most talented team that has ever come through Chaminade. Mr. Bennett was a guy who played under Coach Lee and got to play beside David Lee ’01, who now plays for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. During his time as a player at Chaminade, he came to understand the value of teamwork and the meaning of Chaminade brotherhood.

Bennett wasn’t able to win a state championship as a player, even with a legend like David on the team, but he always held his head up and he kept competing in life. He went on to win the Esto Vir Award, which is the most prestigious award you can get at this school.

Coach Bennett then went on to play four years at Drury University, a DII school in Springfield, Missouri.

Even as a player, he always knew he wanted to coach. He was thrilled to have gotten the head coaching job at CCP, especially with the talent that was already in place. As you might remember, there was a lot of speculation that Tatum – who had come off of a great freshman year – would transfer to CBC at the end of the school year to play for his dad. I was coming

into my first year of varsity entering my sophomore year, and it was an interesting summer because I didn’t know who was even going to be playing with my first year, and had no idea what to expect with a new crew of assistant coaches and a first-year head coach. We knew we were going to be talented, but didn’t know if we would have the leadership for it to all come together.

One thing I remember from that summer was Coach Bennett pulling me aside and telling

me what was going on with the Jayson situation. Coach was completely honest with me, and told me that no matter what happened, he wanted me to make sure I always treated Jayson like family and to not let that affect the way we handled things at our school.

I realized right then and there what kind of person Coach Bennett is. He convinced me that no matter what happens on the court, he would always treat people with the ultimate respect.

Once family, always family.

When Coach Bennett was named head varsity basketball coach, some people outside of the school were saying he wasn’t qualified enough for the job. But none of the talk ever bothered him, and therefore it never got to us. Coach didn’t back down. He showed us why he won the Esto Vir Award, and used the phrase “Be a Man” perfectly by accepting this tough position, stepping into it and building a basketball family here at Chaminade.

After being our coach for the past three years, Mr. Bennett has put us in a position as the frontrunner in the state, and has set up the program for future success. I think it’s safe to say that it was a great move, and think that people should get used to seeing him on the sideline for many years to come.

The Characteristics of Marianist Education How they Articulate What We’ve Always Done - Matt Dailey, Director of Campus Ministry

T

he Characteristics of Marianist Education, or the CMEs as we call them, have become important to Chaminade’s culture since they were introduced in 1996.

From the intense study that the students give the CMEs in their sixth and ninth grade Esto Vir Leadership classes, to the way that the CMEs were used by the entire Chaminade Family in our ISACS school accreditation process last year, they have become a way for us to articulate our school’s mission. It helps us to know what we stand for and how we choose to live out Esto Vir. But why did Chaminade start talking about the CMEs in the 90s? And how did they become so important in defining who we are as a Marianist school?

As a Marianist school, Chaminade has always been blessed to have vowed brothers and priests from the Society of Mary on our faculty and staff, but while they made up the entirety of the faculty and staff at our inception, the ratio of vowed Marianists to lay faculty has dramatically decreased over the last fifty years.

The increase in lay faculty has, of course, been a significant trend in all of our nation’s Catholic schools, and we Catholic schools have had to challenge ourselves to learn how to maintain our schools’ Catholic identities with lay faculties.

During the international General Chapter meeting of the Society of Mary in 1991, the Marianists decided that they needed to articulate the elements of the Marianist education charism so that they could form lay people to continue the Marianist educational tradition and maintain the Marianist spirit of the schools.

So began a five-year process of prayer, discussion and introspection through which members of the Society studied and articulated what makes Marianist schools unique.

In 1996, The Characteristics of Marianist Education was published, and it outlined the five goals that every Marianist school strives to accomplish. They are: • • • • •

To educate for formation in faith To educate in family spirit To provide an integral, quality education To educate for service, justice and peace To educate for adaptation and change

The publication of the CMEs helped Marianist educators to articulate what we had been doing for so many years. The CMEs did not create a new way for us to educate, but instead helped us express how we always have run our schools. Marianist educators now had a common language that helped us to

discuss both our values and a direction for our professional and spiritual growth. Because the CMEs are such a good expression of our spirit, they enjoy a privileged focus in every Marianist school in the world, from Chaminade College Preparatory School in St. Louis, to the University of Dayton, to Our Lady of Nazareth Primary School in Nairobi, Kenya, and all of the others globally. The administrations, faculties and staffs of all of these schools measure themselves by the CMEs.

Here at Chaminade, Fr. Ralph describes the CMEs as “the guidelines by which we operate.”

They have become a part of Chaminade’s vision documents, to the point at which every one of our nearly 300 plans and priorities in our ISACS report corresponds with a CME. Chaminade educators would not commit to changing our praxis or to taking on a new challenge if it did not correspond to the CMEs. In this way, the CMEs, in Fr. Ralph’s words, “shape how we practically live out our mission on a day-to-day basis” guiding the administration and faculty in all decisions that we make. The five characteristics have always animated Chaminade College Preparatory School, and having them as guidelines helps all student and adult leaders to intentionally live out Esto Vir within our Catholic, Marianist tradition.

The Red Inklings

Chaminade’s Talented Authors

I

n the 1930s and 1940s, in Oxford, England, a group of literary enthusiasts, called the Inklings, met informally for regular discussions. They praised the value of the narrative in fiction and encouraged the writing of fantasy stories. Members included C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Owen Barfield, and Hugo Dyson, among many others.

Modeled after the original Inklings, Chaminade’s version call themselves the Red Inklings. Our group of talented writers includes Clifton Ellis, Janice Fleming, Steve Murphy ’85, Ashley Ortiz, Ryan Slattery, and Jack Wilson.

The Inklings are a fairly informal group, who meet once a month during the school year and a few times over the summer. They gather to talk about their latest works, give and get

feedback and, as is often the case, conversations wander along to various topics.

Started by Steve Murphy and Jack Wilson, the Red Inklings have been gathering for almost three years. In addition to helping each other with creative ventures, they also work together in the business of submissions, publishing and promotions. Several book signings have been hosted by the group, and the most recent was held at the Pat Connelly Tavern in Dogtown.

Chaminade Sports Baseball - Chris Chiburis, Head Coach

Varsity baseball entered district play with a 12-8 record. With key victories over MCC rivals CBC, SLUH, and DeSmet, the Red Devils finished tied for second in the league, one game out of first.

The season started out slow with the team hovering around the .500 mark, but once the young Red Devils gained experience, things took off. Starting three freshmen took a little while to gel with the experienced senior leaders and the returning junior core that started as sophomores last year.

The future looks bright for next year even though this year’s team lost to DeSmet in the district semifinals 2-1 on a cold, rainy day.

Golf - Jack Wilson, Head Coach

The Chaminade golf team headed back to the state tournament! Despite a sluggish start to the season, the CCP golfers have played very well in the last few weeks with a second place and two first place finishes in the last three tournaments. The pinnacle of the season came on May 9 with a 28-stroke victory at the sectional tournament. Joe Terschluse ’17 (71) was medalist for the tournament, followed by Andrew Horner ’17 (74) in second place, and Colin Stolze ’18 (77) came in fourth. Patrick Mooney ’17 and Matt Sacchettini ’16 round out the tournament squad heading to Silo Ridge in Bolivar.

Thirty-three golfers participated in the program this year. A freshman squad competed against a number of local schools, and they are eager to play in some summer tournaments to get ready for next season. The JV team had a decent season, finishing 5-4, and they too will be playing throughout the summer. The Varsity golfers capped a 7-3 season with a massive “senior day” victory over Barat Academy before heading into district play.

The state tournament netted a third place trophy.

Tennis - Chris Salaveria, Head Coach

The 2016 varsity tennis season was a true test of belief, positive team spirit and growth.

The team finished with a 6-16-1 dual match record. Although the record appears lopsided,

many close individual matches were played at each dual, where the Chaminade tennis players put forth maximum effort to make their teammates and school proud. Brothers Jack ’16 and Thomas ’18 Waters finished the season with ten doubles victories as a doubles team. The final tally for individual match victories for each player is as follows:

• O’Connor Richardson ’16: 13 wins

• Nate Geraty ’16: 10 wins

• Eric Schmitt ’17: 12 wins

• Ben Hasara ’17: 14 wins

• Jack Marchant ’17: 5 wins

• Tommy Joe Richardson ’18: 12 wins

The individual district tournament followed the conclusion of the team season, where the Waters brothers were one win away from qualifying for the sectional round of the state tournament.

Eric Schmitt was able to navigate through the district and sectional singles bracket and make it to round of sixteen State Tournament, where his season ended.

Track - Jim Chrismer ’85, Head Coach

The track team has had a very good spring meet season this year, competing well in nearly every competition throughout April and early May including the prestigious Clayton Invitational and the always difficult Metro Catholic Conference Championship. At the MCC the varsity squad edged out DeSmet for third place and CJ Boone ’19 broke the JV 400 meter record with a time of 51.9 seconds while Damon Bonds ’17 broke the varsity long jump record that has stood since 1977 with a jump of 21’11”.

Michael Barlow ’16 has continued to excel in the vault, reaching 13’6” with the hope of going over 14’ in the state meet. Other top performers this year include the 4x100 relay team of Andre Whitley ’17, Nate McGhee ’17, Roderick Campbell ’16 and Damon Bonds who have run to a near record-breaking time of 43.6; CJ Boone in the 200 meter dash, who is only a few tenths away from breaking the school record in that event with a time of 22.9; and Reggie Crawford ’17, who joined the team for the first time this year and high jumped 5’8”.

The team competed in the District Meet on May 14 at Ladue and several students advanced to the Sectional and the State Meets.

At the State Meet over Memorial Day, Bryce Johnson, Nate McGhee, Roderick Campbell and Damon Bonds finished fourteenth in the 4x100 relay; Michael Barlow placed eighth in pole vault; and Damon Bonds set a new school record in the long jump (22’8”) to finish second.

Volleyball - Eric Burdge ’89, Head Coach

Our volleyball team played in districts on May 14 in a pool hosted by Affton, the top seed. Other teams in the bracket included O’Fallon Christian, Fort Zumwalt South, and Fort Zumwalt East. The top two teams advanced to play on May 17.

We were anchored by our libero, Clayton Trentham ’17. He’s one of the best in the area and was recently named First Team All-Conference, which is a huge accomplishment considering the powerful teams in the MCC. Clayton is in the top three in digs and top ten in serves received in the area. He was also named to the all-tournament team for the St. Louis Classic, a twenty-eight team tournament, to kick off the year. His defense along with great blocking from our middle hitters, Michael Ji ’17 and Tim Steele ’16 have helped our team be competitive in almost all of our matches. Our hitters are Michael Gauvain ’17, Jacob Dreher ’17, and Eric Maassen ’17, and our back row defenders are Joe Guehring ’17, Christian Mitchell ’17, and Frank Huang ’17, all of whom have contributed throughout the year. Freshmen Jimmy Mullen and Owen Thomasson have been instrumental as well, both as setters and back row defenders.

Tim Steele and Cam Cavlovich are our lone seniors on the team, both deciding to play for the first time. Thank you to both of them for the efforts and to the entire team for keeping a positive attitude throughout our season.

Water Polo - Keith Mug, Head Coach

Varsity water polo ended their season with a loss to Clayton in the play-in round of the district tournament. The team finished with a record of 4-17 after playing a challenging schedule. Junior Patrick Riegel finished the season leading the team with forty-four

goals. He was awarded the Connor Keefe Varsity Player of the Year Award and also earned Second Team All-Conference honors.

Sophomore Andrew Glickert, Varsity Offensive Player of the Year, finished second on the team with thirty-one goals and led the team with

twenty-nine assists. Joe Roach ’16 received the Varsity Defensive Player of the Year Award and represented Chaminade at the Missouri Water Polo Senior All-Star Game.

The JV squad posted a record of 9-10 and an eighth place finish in the JV Championship

tournament. The team was led offensively by sophomore lefty Jonathan Struckhoff who accounted for more than half of the team’s goals. The JV team boasts a talented squad of sophomores that look to help Chaminade at the varsity level next year.

Gatorade Player of the Year

J

ayson Tatum’s mouth fell open.

The Chaminade senior basketball star didn’t believe who was in front of him and what he held in his hands.

Tatum sat on a dais as four-time NBA all-star Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway walked toward him with the Gatorade National Player of the Year trophy cradled in his arms.

The 6-foot-9, Duke-bound standout took the podium in front of friends, family, teammates and assembled media under the guise of a press conference to wrap up Chaminade’s championship season and discuss his appearance in Wednesday night’s McDonald’s All-American Game. He was left in the dark until Hardaway stepped forward with hardware in hand.

Tatum was left speechless.

“It means the world. Just to have this moment with my friends, family, my teammates.

They surprised me good,” Tatum said. “I really can’t describe it. This is right up there with winning a state championship.”

Tatum averaged an area-high 29.5 points per game and 9 rebounds, three assists, two

steals and more than one block per game as he led the Red Devils to the Class 5 state championship. He is the second player from Missouri to win the award since its inception in 1987.

The other was Chaminade graduate and current Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal, who won after his senior season in 2011. Tatum attended Beal’s assembly. He was a seventh grader in Chaminade’s middle school. Tatum aspired to be like Beal, but knew the odds were long.

“I remember the day Bradley Beal won his,” Tatum said. “Never in a million years did I think I’d actually win. It’s a dream of mine. I’m so glad it came to reality.”

Other notable honorees include Dwight Howard (2004), LeBron James (2002, 2003) and Kobe Bryant (1996). Ben Simmons was the reigning award winner.

It was a whirlwind few days for Tatum. He spent Sunday through Wednesday in Chicago for the McDonald’s All-American Game and its festivities. He scored 18 points to lead the East all-star team in Wednesday night’s game.

On Tuesday he and two other competitors took part in and won the Legends and Stars Shootout at the historic Chicago Theater.

“It’s been busy to say the least. I just had a wonderful time,” Tatum said. “Being able to compete in the McDonald’s All-American Game and come back to school and have my friends surprise me with this. I just can’t explain it.”

He left Chicago around 5 a.m. Thursday.

He said his mother, Brandy Cole, was persistent that he made it back to Chaminade.

“I’m glad I came to school,” Tatum said, drawing a laugh from the assembled crowd.

Having Hardaway present the award was also meaningful. The former Orlando Magic star point guard coached against Tatum’s eighth grade AAU team. It was then he noticed the ability that oozed from the youngster.

“I just noticed the talent and thought this kid was going to be special,” Hardaway said. “I just tried to mentor him and give him advice on what to do in certain situations. It’s become a deeper relationship.”

Added Tatum, “He’s been a great mentor for a long time now. He had a lot to do with much of my success. I’m truly thankful.”

The Student Perspective

A Captain’s Look Back on the House System – Anthony Novelly ’16

A

s a Chaminade student, the most common question I faced from people outside of our school was always, “What’s the deal with the House System?” I understand their confusion; Chaminade is one of the few schools in the St. Louis area that offers a House System, and it isn’t very obvious to many people why we do it or how it helps students grow.

I’ve now spent seven years within the Gray House, served as an Eighth Grade House Captain, and just finished my senior year as the Gray House Captain with Ryan Hoffman. Just a few short weeks ago, the Gray House officially clinched the House Cup championship after having swept nearly every individual competition since December. When Fr. Ralph handed the Marianist Cup to Ryan and me, it was one of the proudest moments of my seven-year Chaminade career. All that work we put in finally paid off. And now that my official house duties have ended, I’ve had a little time to think about my involvement in the house system, and how it has changed me.

My first memory of the Chaminade House System was one of confusion. When I first arrived in sixth grade, I was told that I was going to be a member of the Gray House, and I had so many questions. What’s the purpose of the House System? What’s a Red Devil Relay?

Will I ever make friends outside of the Gray House? When do I get my wand? And where is Dumbledore? But before long, all my questions were answered, and I quickly came to love the House System.

The cornerstone of my early experiences in the House System was my mentor group.

Middle school mentor group was incredible.

My mentor was Mrs. Kerr. The energy is immediately contagious, the games are fun, and everything is loud. Mentor group is where I made my first friends. I remember walking into MS14 on my first day of school as a sixth grader; after everyone was introduced we instantly got into a shinny hockey tournament. I remember thinking as a sixth grader how cool it was that I got to hang out with all these older guys in my mentor group, and that they actually knew my name and would say hi to me in the hallways. It was nice to have someone to go to if I needed anything; help with homework, directions to my next class, you name it.

It wasn’t long before my Gray House mentors, leaders, and mentor group buddies made me feel like part of a family. Everything that Chaminade had preached about a family environment and brotherhood was coming true. At the end of my sixth grade year, the Gray House won the House Championship; and although I didn’t really understand much about how or why we won, I clearly remember Fr. Ralph handing those captains the cup and thinking to myself, “I want that to be me my senior year.”

When the opportunity arose to run for middle school Gray House Captain in eighth grade, I leapt at it. I won the election and had my first position of leadership in the house.

There wasn’t a whole lot for me to do, but I did what I could. More than anything else I remember simply observing the senior House Captains. As a Middle School Captain, I was given some insight as to what they did, and the problems they faced. I started to strategize what kind of leader I was going to be if I got elected to be a Senior Captain.

Once in high school, I made it a point to befriend every Gray House kid I could. I figured, “If I’m friends with all these guys, it will be easy to get them to do things for the house if I get elected.” It seemed as though Ryan Hoffman was living out his high school career in the same fashion. So, junior year, when the time came for an election, Ryan and I were voted to be the 2015-2016 Gray House Captains. Once it was announced, Ryan and I immediately set our sights on winning the House Cup. Little did we know just how much work that would take.

Our first job was to decide if we were to lead the Middle or High School mentor groups. I was assigned to oversee the Middle School, and I loved being back. It gave me the opportunity to meet new teachers and try to shape some lives. I thought back to my middle school years, looking up to the senior captain, and hanging on every word he said. I hoped that these kids would feel the same way about me and for the most part they did. I was a role model to them, whether I deserved to be or not. I made it a point to check up on every kid.

I talked with them about their grades, their friends and their families, and I offered help and advice. I didn’t view myself as superior, and I treated them as friends and equals. It was just easier that way.

As the year went on, I became close with every middle school Gray House member, and it was clear that Ryan was doing the same with the high school guys. Whenever we needed volunteers for anything, or help with the House Show, Red Devil Relay or Food Drives, we never had a problem. As a House Captain, you must work all year to rally the other members of your house, convince seniors to buy in and coordinate house meetings and competitions – all while balancing school work, sports, and other extra-curriculars. To do all this, I made it a point to be a servant leader, and very quickly, everyone else in the Gray House began to do the same. People were always willing and able to help, making our jobs very easy. There was even a point where the Gray House swept close to five straight house events. Once all of our guys bought in, I had no doubts that we would take home the Cup.

In the end, the Gray House took the 20152016 Marianist Cup by storm, and it was incredibly gratifying. My time as the Gray House Captain was one of my favorite experiences at Chaminade. I loved every second of it.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Gray House members. Thank you for always volunteering and for being there when Ryan and I needed you most. You guys deserved to win the cup! Keep up the great work next year. I may be graduating, but I’ll always bleed Gray.

wo years ago, the Admissions Office formally created a group of student leaders to assist with various Admissions events. The ESTO VIR Ambassadors were born, and it has been a fantastic army of Chaminade students!

The ESTO VIR Ambassador Program fosters leadership skills in high school students who assist the Admissions Office to promote the mission of the school to prospective students and their families. The Ambassadors are nominated by their teachers based on their effort and conduct in the classroom, participation in extra-curricular activities, and overall good standing in the Chaminade community.

These select students represent Chaminade at a variety of events including Archdiocese High School Nights, Open House, High School Highlight Night, Middle School Night, and New Family Night. Many of the Ambassadors have also hosted prospective students who shadow the school. Every year Chaminade is told by countless attendees at our Open House how impressive the student tour guides are – those are our ESTO VIR Ambassadors!

R

eflecting on my time as a CCP board member is not an easy task because of the many accomplishments that I have witnessed over the years, both on and off campus. I think it is easier for me to break them down by the five Marianist Characteristics that help drive our mission and are clearly present on every board meeting agenda.

Educating for Formation in Faith

Our Mission Integration Committee demonstrates to the board the impact of faith on our Chaminade Family. I’m impressed by the religious programs within the school and the reach that Marianist faith has on and off campus. Board members are asked to pray, reflect, and at times discuss religious readings.

In addition, we meet with Marianist Integration Teams from the province to discuss our role and mission. However, what I’m impressed by most is the students. We have had many meetings where students attend and discuss their faith, their participation in Campus Ministry, various service programs and the Marianist Life Community (MLC). The Marianist Spirit is “ALIVE” and well.

Providing an Integral, Quality Education

I am proud to have witnessed the increased attention on academics over these past several years. I can reflect on the education when I was running the halls as a seventh and eighth grader, and feel blessed to have graduated from such a great school. To this day I still enjoy being on campus and sharing memories with some of my teachers, like Mr. Francis and Bro. Eppy. The focus on education is extremely important to the school and the board. Family Spirit is very easily witnessed each time I’m on campus or at a Chaminade event.

I encourage all to attend a campus tour, Trivia Night, Celebrate Chaminade, the Esto Vir Auction, a theatre or band performance, or sporting event. You too will catch the vibe.

Educating for Service, Justice and Peace

ESTO VIR – Chaminade educates boys and develops them into men of character. The school offers countless opportunities for our school community to give back through service and/or monetarily. Personally, I feel a real sense of peace when I do service work alongside my two sons. The Alumni/Fathers’ Club Service Day has helped me accomplish this in the past.

Educating for Adaptation and Change

I am proud of the changes that have taken place over the past few years. The entire landscape is forever transformed by the amazing addition of the Skip Viragh Center. In addition, we’ve seen other property updates like the new turf field, new bleachers, and a redesigned cafeteria. Other areas of improvement include an increase in dorm residency, additional college credit opportunities for students, and a new logo. Finally, the board oversaw the creation of a surplus in finances and a substantial increase in our endowment. Chaminade is never idle and is currently striving to develop sustainability and global programs for students. All these updates, adaptions, changes, help keep our students on the cutting edge of learning with the best resources available to them.

Spirit Store

he Chaminade Spirit Store is getting ready for the upcoming school year and is excited about the new merchandise and programs that will be unveiled for the fall.

The Spirit Store is located on the first floor of Chaminade Hall and is open on school days from 11:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. We are also open for many events throughout the year to serve our alumni, grandparents, and friends. All proceeds fund student services, facilities and educational programming!

House Quarter Zips

We are excited to announce that the Spirit Store will debut House Quarter Zip Jackets for each of the five Chaminade Houses. These will be available for online purchase in youth, men’s and women’s sizes. Orders placed by early August will be available for pickup by the end of September. These are approved outerwear and can be worn over the student’s house shirts on day that those are required. Watch your email and the Chaminade website for ordering details.

Fall Sports Spirit Wear

For the first time, the store will offer online flash stores for all of the fall sports teams – cross country, football, soccer, and swimming and diving. Last year, the online flash stores

for the winter and spring sports proved to be very popular with coaches, parents, players, and their families. The first orders will be due mid-August for delivery later that month.

We’re also planning a second offering for those who miss out on the first order. Students, parents, grandparents, alumni and all fans of Chaminade athletics are encouraged to order!

Annual Back-To-School Sale

Make plans to stop by the annual Back-toSchool Sale, which will take place in the atrium August 4 to August 8. Jerome Zimmer ’39, a radio pioneer, has been chosen as a 2016 posthumous inductee to the Missouri Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame. Zimmer, founder of Zimmer Broadcasting, will be inducted along with longtime St. Louis Cardinals radio broadcaster Mike Shannon and Ken and Jane Meyer, founders of Meyer Communications in southwest Missouri.

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency plans to build its new western headquarters in St. Louis, keeping a decades-long relationship with the city.

Paul McKee ’63 owns about 40% of the land in the NGA footprint, and significant land surrounding the development.

St. Louis mayoral aides said McKee’s ownership helped the city pinpoint a large enough swath of land to showcase to the NGA.

Ted Leibig ’64 was recently featured as one of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Stories of Honor. Ted’s son, Ted III, is also a Chaminade graduate from the class of 1991. Ted was featured for his role with the U.S. Air Force’s Ravens, a clandestine operation made up of elite fighter pilots during the Vietnam War.

The Ravens lived in Laos, wore civilian clothes and had cover stories. If anybody asked, Liebig was a consultant for navigable waterways. In reality, he and his Raven counterparts flew mission after mission supporting ground forces and working with CIA along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, which was a network of roads used to transport personnel and supplies between North and South Vietnam.

Chris Isaak ’84 was recently hired by Centene Corp as their senior vice president, corporate controller and chief accounting officer. Chris previously worked at Viasystems Group, Inc.

Midfielder Brad Davis ’00 scored a 70th minute goal for Sporting KC, securing a 1-0 victory over Toronto FC at Children’s Mercy Park on March 20, 2016. It was his first goal for the team.

Jack Hathaway ’17 and Henry Stromberg ’17 met Mike Gabrawy ’87 on the set of the movie Mike is producing for Arclight Films called “Nest.”

They met while Henry and Jack were participating in our Australian Exchange at St. Joseph College, Gregory Terrace in Brisbane for five weeks.

Scott Swindler ’03 received the Young Alumni Achievement Award in April on the Westminster College campus in Fulton, Missouri. He is a Brand Manager at 72 and Sunny, a full-service advertising company recognized as one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies of 2015 and a twotime “Agency of the Year Award” winner for Advertising Age and Adweek.

Craig Renshaw ’88 is a senior staff instructor with The Legacy Golf Performance Center in Phoenix, Arizona, and owner of Craig Renshaw Golf.

He has been teaching golf professionally for more than twenty-five years and is a twotime nominee for New England Section PGA Teacher of the Year and Southwest Section PGA Teacher of the Year. He is also a Golf Channel Academy Lead Coach.

Patrick Hyde ’04 was recently ordained as priest in the Dominican order. He celebrated his first Mass on May 15 at St. Clement of Rome parish in St. Louis.

David Otto ’89 recently accepted a position teaching Anatomy and Physiology, and Microbiology Professorship for Surgical Technician Program at Fortis College in Orange Park, Florida.

Teacher Joe Morgan was recently promoted to the rank of grandpa. His daughter and son-inlaw welcomed their son, Graham, in May.

Congratulations to seniors Anthony Aegerter, A.J. Anthon, Ryan Matteo and Tim Steele who have been selected to play in the annual North-South Senior All-Star soccer game. These Chaminade gentlemen were selected by the coaches of the St. Louis Metropolitan area. The game will be played in June 17, at St. Louis Park.

Percussionist Edward Garner ’18 earned second place in the state for his snare drum solo in the A Level Contest at the annual Day of Percussion held by the Missouri Percussive Arts Society.

Congratulations to the All-Metro First Team football players: seniors Rod Campbell, DB, Brandon Haberstroh, DL, and Luke Hanley, LB. All-Metro players are chosen from a pool of all five classes, making a run of three players very unique!

Beth Brasel Named as The Peggy Clinton Memorial Service Award Winner

Peggy Clinton epitomized the role of the true admission professional. Some of those qualities include being detail-focused and caring for the well-being of the students with whom she worked; she had a sense of humor and style. She was respected, admired and loved by all.

College Counselor Beth Brasel has worked tirelessly, always putting the needs of others first. She understands the importance of higher education, its purpose, and the steps needed to achieve one’s goal. Beth has served on the National Association of College Admissions Counseling’s PD Committee as well as the being the St. Louis National College Fair Co-Chair, PDC Co-Chair and President.

Project Lead The Way Certified Chaminade announced at the end of March that it has received national certification for its Project Lead The Way (PLTW) program, which began in 2013. PLTW is a nonprofit organization that provides a transformative learning experience for K-12 students and teachers. PLTW Engineering empowers students to step into the role of an engineer, adopt a problem-solving mindset, and make the leap from dreamers to doers.

The national PLTW recognition distinguishes schools for successfully demonstrating a commitment to PLTW’s national standards.

“We’ve seen how the PLTW program draws more students to engineering, math and science and gets them thinking about college and their careers,” Philip Rone, principal of Chaminade said. “We are extremely proud to be PLTW certified and ecstatic that our students are eligible for college-level recognition, which may include college credit, scholarships and admissions preference.”

Brett Desnoyer Celebrated as Finalist for the M. Cathlin Casey Award for Teaching Excellence

Congratulations to English teacher Brett Desnoyer for his recognition as a finalist for the M. Cathlin Casey Award for Teaching Excellence.

Sr. M. Cathlin Casey, BVM, the namesake of this award, epitomized the philosophy of the 1818 Advanced College Credit Program.

Sr. Casey taught English at two 1818 ACC Program charter high schools, Xavier High School and St. Louis University High. Sr. Casey is remembered fondly for her commitment to academic excellence, rigorous expectations of her students, and contagious sense of joy.

Athletic Field Renovations

Chaminade recently announced plans to install synthetic turf on the Don Ohlms ’53 athletic field during the summer of 2016.

Chaminade’s Board of Trustees approved the beginning of construction on the new turf field in order to be ready for the upcoming fall athletic season. This is one of the many projects the board has evaluated as part of its long term strategic plans. The board, as good Marianist stewards, has committed to initiate this project because of opportune pricing and timing.

Chaminade Athletic Director Tom Fernandez said, “We are committed to providing our players, coaches and fans an enhanced playing field. This needed renovation to the field will ensure that the game-day experience provides an enjoyable playing surface for players and opponents.”

Giving Back Scholarship Honors Cole Owens ’18

H

enry Gladson ’18 was recently selected as the first recipient of the Chaminade Middle School Student Leader Scholarship in Honor of Cole Owens. Funding for this award is derived from proceeds of events hosted by Chaminade’s Middle School.

Henry will receive a renewable partial scholarship towards his tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year. According to the scholarship guidelines, “This award is designed to recognize students who possess the qualities that made Cole such a special part of Chaminade Family, and who also exemplify great potential and leadership skills. The student will be active in the school community, a friend to all, and possess curiosity and compassion. The chosen student will be a positive role model to his peers, finding the good in every situation and making the most of this precious life we are given in both his actions and his dreams.”

It was determined that in the first year the scholarship would be awarded to a member of Cole’s 2018 class. After Henry graduates the new student awardee will be an incoming seventh or eighth grader and his scholarship will also be renewable.

It is Dr. Guidry’s and Ms. Owens’s hope that the scholarship will continue to grow through both Middle School events and private gifts, and will eventually be awarded as a full tuition scholarship.

Tax deductible donations of any amount may be made to this and all scholarship funds at any time.

Endowed Scholarship Program Continues to Flourish

hanks to our many loyal alumni, parents and friends of Chaminade, the Endowed Scholarship program continues to grow, providing support for so many of our students.

These scholarship awards truly make a difference for many of our families who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the Esto Vir journey.

For the 2016-17 academic year, there are seventy-two endowed scholarships awarded to 147 deserving recipients totaling over $384,000. There are three new scholarships for

2016-2017: The Groneck Family Scholarship, Dick Boyles ’56 Scholarship (his fifth!), unnamed at the time of publication, and The Middle School Student Leader Scholarship in Honor of Cole Owens.

Nowhere was the impact of these scholarship gifts more evident than at the Sixteenth Annual Scholarship Luncheon held on April 22.

The program continues to outgrow space utilized for the luncheon, and this year we moved to Our Lady of the Pillar’s Parish Life Center.

Almost 240 student recipients and their many benefactors shared lunch and listened to our seniors proved heartfelt words of thanks.

All agreed it was a beautiful day!

Chaminade Fund

T

he Chaminade Fund is key to our overall success, going directly into our operations budget and impacting every one of our 836 students. To date, we have achieved over 81% of our overall budgeted goal and have until June 30 to meet or exceed that goal. We need your help!

Our loyal donors may indicate how their tax deductible gifts may be used – Greatest Need, Fine Arts, Academics, Athletics, Financial Assistance, Retreat Programs or Professional Development for Faculty and Staff – all have a direct impact on the experience of our young students.

Gifts of any amount are greatly appreciated. All levels provide support for our Chaminade gentlemen. For example: • $85 can provide funding for a young man participating in our retreat programs • $250 can buy textbooks for a middle school student • $1,672 can buy the over two tons of clay used in art classes • $2,500 can provide much-needed support for one of our dedicated faculty

working towards their master’s or doctorate degree • $6,000 can offset the average amount of financial aid awarded to over 40% of our students Your gift is critical, ensuring that CCP maintains the same high level of academic excellence while providing an affordable Marianist education for our young men.

n Tuesday, May 3, Chaminade partnered with hundreds of non-profits in the St. Louis area for the region’s largest one-day, online giving event.

We took advantage of the local advertising on radio and TV and put together our own email campaign. An appeal was sent to our loyal constituents focusing on the many accomplishments in the Chaminade Family this academic year.

The result was thirty-nine gifts to the Chaminade Fund totaling $5,140. These dollars go directly into our operating budget and will be put to work immediately, impacting each and every one of our 836 students.
