T

he Esto Vir Journey is alive and well!

Esto Vir, Chaminade’s motto, has been incorporated into the Chaminade crest since its inception in 1910. The Chaminade experience has always focused on the journey from boyhood to manhood, and the significant steps along that journey. “Being a Man” involves receiving the call to serve our community and our world, and our school motto challenges each of our young men to develop all of the gifts that were bestowed upon him and become the best version of himself. Each student’s Esto Vir Journey enables him to develop his academic, leadership, athletic, and artistic talents along with an opportunity to deepen his faith and serve the community.

It’s so gratifying to see Chaminade alumni succeeding on the national and international athletic stage. This past school year began with an all-school assembly featuring a surprise visit from alumni Chris Butler ’05 and Paul Stastny ’04. They walked into the Skip wearing Chaminade hockey jerseys and were then presented with their St. Louis Blues jerseys as new players.

Paul said later that day, “This is a top notch school, and the seven years I was here, starting in the sixth grade, was the biggest factor away from hockey that helped me with my maturity, becoming a man. The motto, ‘Esto Vir’ was important and is still something I always hold close to my heart.”

Only a few weeks prior, the Chaminade Family celebrated Brad Davis ’00 playing on the U.S. World Cup team that advanced to

the quarterfinals last July and Bradley Beal ’11 hosted his annual basketball camp at Chaminade. The local media also took note of the recent role of two Chaminade alumni in their ultimate pursuit for the highest honors in their respective sports – Ben Bishop ’05 with Tampa Bay Lightning’s run for the Stanley Cup and David Lee ’01 with the Golden State Warriors’ capturing the NBA Championship.

Bradley Beal helped the Washington Wizards make their deepest run into the NBA playoffs, as well. We’re proud to add Austin Allen ’12 to our list of professional athletes after his recent selection in the fourth round of the MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres.

It takes discipline, hard work and commitment to compete at this level. These athletes demonstrate the meaning of Esto Vir on a world stage. They persevered through injuries and reduced playing time; they supported their teammates in victory and defeat; they dedicated themselves to using their God-given talents to the best of their abilities and continue to represent Chaminade well!

And while it is amazing to see that a small school like Chaminade continually has world-class athletes competing at the highest level on the national and international stage, it’s also incredible to see how many of our alumni achieve at high levels in their careers, as fathers guiding their families, and as stewards of social justice throughout the community.

Many alumni find time to return to Chaminade to give back their time and resources. This past year we welcomed

Steve Smith ’74, Kevin Haar ’75, Bill Corrigan ’77, and Chris Chivetta ’80 as panelists for our Chaminade Business Network and twenty-five alumni returned for our annual Ethics in the Workplace and Career Day for our seniors. Ten Chaminade alumni along with the members of the 2001 State and National Champion Soccer Team, were inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in April, and many spoke of the importance of Esto Vir in their lives.

Fr. Chris Martin ’97 was our Commencement Speaker and eloquently shared his advice with the graduates and their families. His familiar words echoed in the Skip once again as he urged the young men of the Class of 2015 to “not become the men the world wants you to be, but rather become the men that the world needs you to be.” Fr. Chris summed up the essence of Esto Vir in this quote and it’s a great reminder of what we do here at Chaminade every day. This is a very special place where boys become young men, acquaintances become brothers, students become Marianist servant leaders and our graduates become Chaminade gentlemen.

T

his spring was very busy at the Skip Viragh Center for the Arts. We hosted two Winter Opera St. Louis events, L’Amico Fritz and Otello, two St. Louis Wind Symphony concerts, the first NEXUS Regional Pro-Life Convention, a four-day music festival, the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame Legends of Golf event and a St. Louis Philharmonic concert. On top of that we managed multiple school events including the students’ house Show, the NHS induction ceremony, the Chaminade Sports Hall of Fame, and several band concerts and art shows, to name a few.

As we wrap up our fourth year, we reflect on what a blessing this building is to the school and community, and remind ourselves of a few of our core values: we believe in the power of the arts and we bring together our school and our community and how we try to live them every day.

Viragh-Palooza was again a huge hit! Art and math students in all divisions spent two days decorating the driveway with a myriad of colorful, chalk-drawn radial designs that set the stage for this fun-filled day of celebration.

The many creative talents of our students were on display through musical performances, live wheel throwing clay demonstrations, short films, live drama scenes, an art show, and a pottery sale. A visiting ice sculptor from L’Ecole Culinare, customizable Frisbees, barbeque and sno-cones added to the festival atmosphere.

Chaminade Bands shined once again this year with student concerts being the “proof in the pudding.” Guest artists and educators included Wycliffe Gordon, one of the most recognized and heralded jazz artists in the world, Garry Andeers, a beloved Missouri music educator, teacher Eric Warren’s jazz quartet, and Matt McAllister ’09 and his jazz quartet.

The Theatre Department wrapped up a busy and successful season featuring the all-school musical of Man of LaMancha, the middle school’s production of Battledrum, and The 39 Steps performed by the high school.

High school students also performed scenes from the comedy All in the Timing. The future looks bright for theatre at Chaminade with increased involvement from the middle school level and developing talent overall allowing for an expansion of next year’s theatre season with a fourth show.

The 2015-16 season includes Shrek the Musical, the Middle School show, Into the Woods Jr., the High School show, The Boys Next Door and the all-school show, The Bully Plays.

Principals’ Corner Our Culture of Kindness

A

s we focus on guiding our students along their Esto Vir Journey, we are constantly looking at the systems we have in place that allow for deep, meaningful relationships to be built among our students and faculty. We continually develop our expertise in understanding the key elements of a healthy learning environment for boys, the enhancement of these systems and the relationships built within them remain top priorities for us as a school. We know that providing a nurturing environment for students to connect with one another and with their teachers can result in higher academic achievement, more fruitful social interactions, higher levels of extra-curricular involvement, and a stronger sense of belonging and selfworth.

As a school, we have made a commitment to creating a culture that hinges upon the acceptance of students for who they are; a place where passions and interests can be cultivated. While implementing and sustaining a culture in any organization is complex, the core of the environment we desire is quite simple: the interactions our students have with one another. We consistently challenge ourselves to

reflect on the nature of the peer relationships of our students and how we can ensure that they are healthy and life-giving. The question for us remains: how can we create a culture of kindness among our students?

Over the past few years, the administration and counseling department have come together to develop strategies that give students the skills to best interact with one another. Last year we introduced our anonymous reporting hotline. The hotline allows students to anonymously text trusted adults about experiences students have had, often as an observer, that they know are contrary to the culture that is desired here at CCP. This allows for counselors to engage in conversations with students about the potential effects their actions may have on others. It also allows for engagement of students who are struggling with their relationships with other students.

These teachable moments promote growth and understanding, and they minimize the fear that students often have about being honest with adults regarding the social struggles they face in their lives.

This year we were fortunate enough to have Stu Cabe visit Chaminade to share his reflections of being a positive role-model for others. His time with our students in grades six through nine was energetic, impactful, and humorous. His message encouraged the students to build one another up, and to clearly be a community that supports one another. Stu conducted an all-day workshop with our seventh grade students, as well. The workshop gave students an opportunity to better understand the skills necessary for healthy and positive relationships. We are excited to announce Stu will return to the middle school this coming fall.

Next year, the drama department will put on a production of The Bully Plays. The show consists of several short plays that address the issues of bullying in adolescent environments. We anticipate the show will be viewed by a majority of the student body. This will give our students yet another opportunity to see the experiences of negative interactions from several key

perspectives. Additionally, the middle school students’ summer reading book is Wonder,

by R.J. Palacio. The novel follows a fifth grade student named Auggie who has characteristics that make him an easy target for bullying. The author beautifully offers Auggie’s experience through the eyes of the different parties involved. It is a powerful story of perseverance, resilience, brotherhood, forgiveness, and acceptance. Our middle school teachers are eager to incorporate the lessons of the novel into their curriculum. The drama teachers and eighth grade English instructor Lindsey Hill are planning cross-curricular lessons that incorporate the drama production with the summer reading book, as well.

Posters designed by our art department fill the hallways of campus. An image of a high school student and a middle school student giving each other a fist bump with the phrase, “It’s cool to be kind” expresses a simple, yet profound message: that all students are welcome, and that kindness is the mode in which we operate. The signs also emphasize the importance of building the Family Spirit that we’ve come to appreciate so much as a Chaminade Family.

Our Marianist tradition challenges us to treat all people with dignity and respect, within a spirit of openness and hospitality; a spirit which has helped to define our school community. As we strive to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment for our students, the culture we continue to create is one of kindness, respect, and love of others.

Junior Leadership

C

haminade College Preparatory School’s understanding of Marianist education includes a strong commitment to student leadership. Through the House System, Chaminade offers several opportunities for students, and particularly seniors, to develop their leadership skills. Whether they are leading underclassmen in a mentor group or in a House Competition, senior leaders are encouraged to model “Esto Vir” for underclassmen and are expected to embody the five Characteristics of Marianist Education.

At Chaminade every senior student is tasked with duties of leadership, and every student is given leadership training throughout the course of their Chaminade education. This year, as in years past, eleventh grade students attended Junior Leadership Training at the Adventure Ranch in Steelville, Missouri. The training offers students several opportunities to work collaboratively with fellow juniors and housemates in order to develop crucial leadership skills. These skills are developed through a series of challenging activities which require teamwork, communication, perseverance, and trust.

Students spend two days not only honing their leadership skills, but also learning to identify their own leadership style. Whether they are working their way through a “highropes” or a “low-ropes” course, are practicing orienteering or traversing a mud-course, students learn that success in a team stems from the trust and selflessness that builds strong relationships.

“This overnight leadership trip provides an opportunity for the juniors to interact and rely on each other outside of the normal classroom environment.”

The Junior Leadership experience is an important stage in each student’s Esto Vir Journey – a journey which asks students to discover and to become the best version of themselves.

As senior-leaders, Chaminade’s upperclassmen are given pastoral responsibilities with and for their younger classmates, with the goal of creating true community and awakening Marianist Family Spirit amongst the student body. The Junior Leadership experience seeks to help students come to a greater understanding of how they can make a positive difference in the lives of others – thus integrating every student into the Catholic, Marianist mission of the school.

A

nnual Giving through the Chaminade Fund is an essential element of our financial well-being. Gifts to the Chaminade Fund directly impact the lives of all of our 810 current students. The fund covers all areas of the Chaminade experience and your generous support will help make it possible for us to educate and inspire the next generation of CCP alumni.

Chaminade has undergone some major structural changes in recent years, but at the same time the proud tradition of our Marianist mission has not changed. Our parents and alumni are very supportive of our mission and dedicated to making the Chaminade experience a positive one for the students of today and tomorrow. We realize how fortunate CCP is to have the unwavering support of parents, faculty, alumni, and friends, and we will continue working hard every day to maintain that trust.

In recent years, all alumni gifts have been earmarked specifically for financial aid, which is awarded, based on need, to more than 30% of our student body. The parent and friend portions of the Chaminade Fund provide enhancements for classroom learning, outdoor education and our impressive retreat program.

Also included are faculty/staff professional development opportunities and the costly maintenance of our 55+ acre campus. Tuition and fees cover about 94% of the actual cost of educating a Chaminade student and we rely on our donors to bridge that gap.

Ethics in the Workplace Senior Career Seminar

T

he Alumni office hosted the 20th Annual Ethics in the Workplace/Career Seminar for the senior class. The purpose of the Ethics and Career Day seminar is for alumni to share ethical dilemmas from real-world situations and facilitate discussion with senior students as well as to expose them to various career paths.

haminade’s second annual ViraghPalooza, held on May 1, was another huge success! Founded by our very own artistic dynamic duo of teachers Julie and Mark Laury, the day’s events are a culmination and celebration of the many talents of our Chaminade gentlemen.

Mark said, “The idea of Viragh-Palooza came about as an extension of the annual student pottery sale. Many people attended the sale and it automatically had a mini-festival feel. We went with that initial idea and tried to build on it, being deliberate about keeping it student-centered and student-run. “Because many of the events are student initiated, they are given an opportunity to plan, coordinate and execute their event to the degree that they want. Viragh-Palooza is a festival which celebrates the value of our arts. It is intended to make the arts accessible and relatable to all. It highlights and shares many of the gifts that our students have been given and developed.”

The spring weather was perfect for Chaminade students to showcase their varying,

and always amazing, creative talents. The Skip Viragh Center for the Arts was teeming with activity both inside and out. At the end of the day, students poured out of their classrooms and could be seen enjoying snow cones, watching an ice carving in the making and throwing Frisbees in the quad as music played in the background.

Attendees were able to view and participate in a multitude of activities – pottery sales, student film premiers, improv, raku-firing, chalk drawing, barbecue club fare, spring art show, live musical performances by both students and faculty. Local St. Louis festivals are heralded as some of the finest in the Midwest, but they’ve got nothing on us. The Laury’s have truly demonstrated their love for the arts by putting so much time and effort into the day’s events and it shows.

For the first time, Chaminade’s Advancement Office added Donor-Palooza to the mix by inviting donors to attend the festival of creativity and then enjoy cocktails, appetizers and an update from our president, Fr. Ralph Siefert. All agreed that it was a nice change from the previous Donor Appreciation Dinners and that seeing their dollars at work through the students was really impactful. The group included alumni, current, and past parents, all of whom welcomed the idea of being on campus and seeing long-time Chaminade friends again.

Carol and Kin Watkins, parents of graduates Chris ’09 & Tim ’12, summed up the event this way: “Viragh-Palooza 2015 was a beautiful

sunny May day, with tons of wonderful student art to view and buy! [...] It looked like a typical college campus in spring!! This fun afternoon was followed by a casual cocktail party for donors in the atrium, where we had a great time mingling with parents and grandparents of boys from a cross-section of class years. What a nice way to end the gorgeous day!”

Ellen Ruzicka, who came from Chicago to attend the event with her parents, Ray and Ginny, expressed similar sentiments, “I loved everything about it!”

Plans are already in the works to continue with the third annual Viragh-Palooza next year on May 6, 2016 and Donor-Palooza will continue as well. Mark your calendar and plan to join us!

Don’t Miss the 6th Grade

C

haminade is an exciting place to live and to learn during a boy’s formative years.

For many of the students at Chaminade, the Esto Vir journey begins in sixth grade. Why is this an important year to begin? Since the founding of the school in 1910, the school has ranged from grades four through twelve. Over the years the entry point has changed, but the philosophy that an all-male, Marianist middle school education is essential has remained an integral part of the school.

When a student enters the hallowed halls of Chaminade, they are no longer treated like boys, but rather young men. Simply put, the expectations of a young man at Chaminade are high. They are expected to carry themselves in a manner that reflects positively on themselves and the institution they represent.

At school, there will now be more homework to complete on time, papers to write, tests to study for, teachers’ expectations to manage, buildings to navigate and new friends to make.

As a sixth grader this can seem overwhelming, but the team of sixth grade educators makes the transition as seamless as possible by creating an atmosphere which is both nurturing and encouraging, an atmosphere that is built on respect for both the educator and the learner.

Many seeds are planted during this magical entry year which is a perfect time developmentally for a young man to start his Esto Vir journey since sixth grade boys are incredibly capable, curious and cooperative.

Sixth grade is the only time when all of the boys start in the same place. They are coming from different learning environments, teaching

styles, homework expectations, classroom protocols, and fine arts education, all with varying levels of experience. Chaminade’s teachers excel at cohesively bringing these differences together. They build significant relationships with their students. In addition, upperclassmen provide daily mentoring through the House System, and a sixth grade student will begin to develop the maturity necessary to be successful in his academics and take his gifts and talents to the next level.

outdoor education trip to the Teton Science School in Jackson, Wyoming, where the boys get the chance to explore one of the most majestic places in America. The trip has three goals: fostering independence, education, and exploration. These are important components to the journey which are hidden in the fun, excitement, and camaraderie that preteens revel in. For many, it is the first time they are away from their parents and expected to take care of themselves – they make their own lunch, pack their own day packs with the necessary hiking essentials, and even do the dishes. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is their classroom for a week where they see wildlife up close, perform water ecology studies and begin to form relationships that will last a lifetime. Physically taxing, the teachers are always proud of the students’ perseverance and stamina.

For many Chaminade graduates, the sixth grade year is truly a memorable experience and it is the beginning of a world filled with opportunities. It is the launching point for what will become the best years of their life.

From waking up early to make it to mentor group for ‘shinny hockey’, studying hard for that first Biological Explorations test, getting excited about putting on the Chaminade jersey for the game after school to spotting a wolf track in the mountains of the Grand Tetons National Park on the class trip, the sixth grade will become the foundation for the many great

things accomplished by the young men who walk through these halls.

“As we all leave Chaminade and enter into the next phase of our lives, I have no doubt that the men in the Class of 2015 will continue living Esto Vir in everything that they do,” said Tommy Rudawsky ’15 in his senior reflection.

Tommy has said many times that these were years well spent with classmates who are now considered brothers, teachers who he will never forget and life lessons that he will carry on forever… all beginning in sixth grade.

A Successful Golf Tournament!

T

he 33rd annual Chaminade Golf Tournament hosted by the Fathers’ Club was held May 29 at the Missouri Bluffs. Over 150 golfers participated in the tournament to benefit our extraordinary soccer program and field. Proceeds from the tournament will be earmarked for such improvements as the stadium fencing, additional seating, and equipment.

The tournament featured a fun day filled with Red Devil camaraderie with alumni, current students and parents, past parents and grandparents enjoying wonderful food and beverages on and off the course. The tournament committee partnered with Dixon Golf to provide unique contests and prizes for all of the golfers. The highlight of the tournament is the annual drawing for the fabulous Pebble Beach raffle ticket, won this year by Michael Burns.

A special thanks to the Father’s Club, the Golf Committee, sponsors, and the players for a highly successful event benefitting Chaminade and its mission. Watch for details for the 34th annual tournament in 2016.

CORRECTION: In the winter issue, we announced Conner ’06 and Emily Keefe were married on January 23, 2015. Conner and Emily’s wedding is planned for January 2016.

Tom O’Donnell ’65 is now retired and splits his time between Rothbury, England and Morgantown, West Virginia. He’s working on a second career as a folksinger.

AJ Chivetta ’76 and his business partners recently launched Selequity, the first-ever commercial real estate crowdfunding company chosen to compete at the highly-coveted TechCrunch Disrupt technology and startup conference in New York City. Selequity is an online marketplace that provides property owners (sponsors) access to a much wider audience of investors.

Joe McGauley ’77 and his team at Gershman Commercial Real Estate recently formed Gershman Commercial Equities, LLC, with the goal to acquire and reposition office, industrial, retail and mixed-use properties in the St. Louis metropolitan region.

Mike Rapp ’87 has been serving in the Navy since leaving Chaminade. He’s returning to St. Louis for an assignment at Scott Air Force Base.

David Guest ’94 recently received the Crystal Apple Award from the Los Angeles County Office of Education which “honors teachers who innovate with technology projects and display creative teaching practices to make an engaging environment for their students.” David was one of ten teachers to receive the award in LA County.

David graduated from Washington University, then received a Master of Fine Arts in Film Production from USC and a Master of Education from Pepperdine. For the past twelve years, he has taught film production classes in the Los Angeles Unified School District. He is completing his third year as Director of the Grant Film Academy Magnet High School.

Max Lummis ’01 was named one of the 2015 40 Under Forty honorees by the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts and the Consultants’ Training Institute. Max and his fellow honorees will be feted at the Annual Consultants’ Conference in New Orleans in June.

In February, John Wright ’01, a captain in the United States Air Force, was awarded one of ten Mike Mansfield Fellowships for 2015-2016. The program was established

by Congress in 1994 to build a corps of U.S. government officials with substantial Japanese expertise.

John will gain an in-depth understanding of the Japanese government and policymaking process during the one-year Fellowship Program, which includes a seven-week intensive Japanese language program and ten months of placements in the government of Japan and nongovernmental entities.

Chris Wideman ’08 of the Binghamton Senators was voted the winner of the Eddie Shore Award as the American Hockey League’s outstanding defenseman for the 2014-15 season. The award is voted on by coaches, players and members of the media in each of the league’s 30 cities.

Jimmy Winkelmann ’09 was recently awarded the National Science Foundation Fellowship for his outstanding research in cancer diagnostics at Mizzou, MIT and now Northwestern University, where he is pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering.

Jimmy was one of only three students in his program to receive this award and one of 2,000 in the nation. This fellowship provides sufficient funding for Jimmy to pursue his important research for the next four years while he is working toward his Ph.D.

Patrick Kesterson ’11 was part of a four-man team from Canisius College who won the “Serious Game Design Competition” by designing a video game that teaches kids about career paths and making good life choices. The digital multimedia arts students edged out a team of software programmers from Libram Games, a gaming company, winning the $5,000 grand prize.

The city of Buffalo, NY created the competition to encourage entrepreneurship and the growth of technological industries, such as computer game development.

Austin Allen ’12 was recently selected in the 4th round of the MLB Draft. The San Diego Padres selected him as the 117th pick from Florida Tech. Austin is a catcher and was the first NCAA Division II position player selected in the draft, the first Sunshine State Conference player and the first from Florida Tech since 2013. He was named to the ABCA/Rawlings Second Team All-American after claiming the SSC batting title (.421 average) and breaking the school’s single-season record with 25 doubles along with 11 home runs.

Hunter Sansone ’12 was recently featured in a national Verizon commercial as the unfortunate guy whose lost connection lost him a girlfriend.

As part of their Co-Op program, Robert Kidwell ’13 will be working full time for GE Transportation in the upcoming fall semester.

His time will be spent furthering his study of materials science and engineering, potentially in the field of solar energy, a topic in which he is a published researcher.

Over the summer, he is working with Camp Kesem, a charity run by college students to support kids whose parents have cancer.

Robert is helping the branch located on the campus of Case Western Reserve, his university.

Mason Campbell ’14 is taking time off from higher education to pursue his dream of playing Junior A Hockey. He plans to play European pro hockey in Germany or Switzerland, followed by an education in either medicine or law.

that you thought were a waste of time...you may realize that they weren’t.

That is one of those unavoidable facts of life...you are going to get older and you are going to start that career. I can tell you one thing with certainty...adulthood isn’t exactly as advertised. I also realize how right my grandfather was when he said, “Don’t worry ’cause nothing is gonna be OK!” He was a cynic, no doubt, and it seemed like a half-humored resignation to doom and disappointment. I now see it differently – as a wise acknowledgment that things never really go according to plan.

Timing isn’t everything – “rolling with it” is.

I believe Chaminade has made sure that you are prepared to roll with it – to be open to change, to be open to hard work, to get through school and start that life for which you have been anxiously preparing.

I’ve been on the Alumni Board for ten years. At the start, we were lucky enough to hire a Director of Alumni Relations. Since then, we have funded an Alumni Scholarship, continue to have our Alumni Golf Tournament, we started an annual Trivia Night, and we are now working hard to make sure each

began my career at Chaminade in 1986 in the seventh grade.

There was no Skip, we wore ties in the winter, we couldn’t wear tennis shoes, shirts were tucked in, belts on and smoking was permitted but only in designated areas. Times have certainly changed.

I sound like an old man when I say it goes by very quickly. For many of you, your years at Chaminade will have been some of the best of your life. Perhaps others have been counting the days until you get out. Either way, I hope you will look back at these days with great fondness and memories of growth, friendships and that teacher you’ll be telling stories about for years. I hope that you will realize that high school is about figuring yourself out. Things

graduating class stays in touch. This has been accomplished with the help of several energetic and devoted Alumni Board members as this year we launched a Class Captain program.

With the dawn of social media, it has become amazingly easy to keep track of old friends. We want to make sure each alumnus is aware of the FUN events and is invited to watch a ballgame or attend a dinner or happy hour with former classmates.

I urge each of you to please stay in touch with each other. I promise that as the years pass, you will realize how close this school has made you to each other.

I am incredibly proud to be an alumnus of Chaminade, even more proud to be the Alumni Board President, and so greatly honored to welcome you all into our Alumni Association.

haminade has distinguished itself as a school focused on the development of each young man’s character. Our emphasis on the values and behaviors of the Christ-like man is the core of our institution’s motto – ESTO VIR. It follows that the Admissions Office looks for students who demonstrate strong character, leadership, and empathy for others. So how could a school measure these qualities?

For decades, the admissions department has used a student’s application, essay, academic records and teacher recommendations along with a personal interview and/or visit to Chaminade, to best assess his ability to be successful. A traditional focus on grades, test scores and other data can’t tell us about WHO the young man is – what are his values? What type of leader can he be? What will he contribute to our community? Can he fully live ESTO VIR?

We are proud to share that Chaminade joined thirty-one other hand-picked, independent schools from across the country to develop an assessment test that will help measure these ESTO VIR traits – such as grit, empathy, conscientiousness, and adaptability. This pilot project is being developed with the Secondary School Assessment Testing Board and the Educational Testing Service and will assist independent schools in identifying traits that truly demonstrate an applicant’s character AND ability. This will be a significant step forward in measuring success, not just through traditional academic standards, but by also measuring ESTO VIR qualities.

Chaminade participants include faculty members Jason Kertz, Bob Murphy, Tim Sartori ’98, and Andrew Siewert helping write testing scenarios, and select middle school students taking the first online version this past spring. The Character Assessment Test will continue to be developed over the next year, in hopes of having this tool in place in the fall of 2016.

Theology teacher Dan Stout has been selected as one of seven local educators invited to form the Teaching St. Louis Educator Collaborative. The collaborative will have representatives from seven critical areas/ levels: early childhood, elementary, math, science, social studies, language arts, and theology. This group of educators will develop additional lessons and curriculum for teachers based on the ideas found in the original vision of the Teaching St. Louis Series.

Each educator in the collaborative was nominated by Saint Louis University faculty in the Urban Education Learning Community because of their expertise in critical pedagogy and their advocacy for social justice in the classroom. The group met several times to develop lessons for events which will be publicly available on the Teaching St. Louis website.

Quinn Duncan ’15 and Dominic Vella ’15 were honored at the American Society of Civil Engineers event in St. Louis for competing in the West Point Bridge Design civil engineering contest. Quinn was awarded 1st place with a cash prize of $300 and Dominic was awarded 2nd place with a cash prize of $200.

Bobby Hogan ’15 was selected for the cast for the 2015 Muny season as part of the Muny Teen Touring Troupe, as well as for the main stage productions of Hairspray and Into the Woods.

Earlier this spring, Chaminade students participated in the American Mathematics Competition, sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. The contests are designed to engage students in problem solving and to prepare them for future mathematical success. There was a contest for students in grades 9-10 and another for students in grades 11-12.

Congratulations to our top three upperclassmen – Zhongtian Dong ’16 (88th percentile), Jeremy Schneider ’15 (84th percentile), and Jacob Bai ’16 (73rd percentile) and the top three scores for the underclassmen – Patrick Quirk ’17 (95th percentile), Justin Remelius ’17 (87th percentile), and Alec Pfeffer ’17 (80th percentile) who finished with impressive scores against the top math students across the country!

Chaminade is proud to announce that Trevor Trout ’18 was one of only forty-four players nationwide selected to participate in the inaugural NFL Prep Academy.

The Academy recognizes the most elite upcoming sophomore student-athletes in the country and will be held June 17-20 in Philadelphia, PA.

Student-athletes are invited based upon academics, athletics, leadership, and coach and teacher recommendations. All activities are hosted at The Wharton College of Business and the Philadelphia Eagles facility.

Brady Tkachuk ’18 was selected to USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program for the 2015-16 season.

He joins nine other players recently named to compete as members of the U.S. National Under-17 Team.

Adam Munich ’16 received Great Circle’s 2015 Youth Spirit Award.

The Youth Spirit Award is given to those rare young people who wholeheartedly dedicate their time and efforts volunteering with Great Circle.

According to Vincent Hillyer, President and CEO of Great Circle, “Adam has spent the last three years on our St. Louis campus, assisting with a myriad of projects from landscaping and painting to assisting at our flagship fundraising events. Adam is always ready to help with a smile on his face. As in your mission statement, Chaminade believes in educating young men for service, justice and peace.

Freshman got off to a slow start but finished strong against the toughest part of their schedule with a key 8-0 victory over CBC.

The sophomore team had an up and down year dealing with cancellations due to both weather and a shortage of umpires. They had two key victories over SLUH and a big victory over DeSmet. They made it to the Championship game of the Troy Buchannan tourney against Eureka. The team shined even with four sophomores promoted to the varsity team.

Varsity started out hot, but then ran into tough times. They finished the season 13-12 with a heart-breaking loss in the district semi-final to eventual state champion CBC 2-1.

Matt Mimlitz ’15 carried a no-hitter into the fifth before surrendering his first hit. They gave their all throughout the season and played well as a team. Every single player showed great character in understanding their role. We say goodbye to twelve seniors and it will be a challegne to replace the leadership they brought.

We ended the season with five sophomores playing up. The future is bright for the Baseball Red Devils.

Congratulations to Tommy Rudawsky ’15, Matthew Sacchettini ’16, and Joe Terschluse ’17 (pictured, below left) for qualifying for the state golf tournament at Sedalia Country Club. Joe’s score of 74 earned him a second place finish in the 50 player sectional tournament. The golfers finished the state tournament with scores of 159, 165, and 155 respectively.

Tommy Rudawsky was also named to the Golf All-Metro 3rd Team.

Lacrosse Wrap-Up - Rachael Rudanovich

Congratulations to the JV Lacrosse (pictured below) team for winning the 2015 Missouri State Championship. They defeated SLUH in the semifinals and CBC in the title game. The team played with a lot of heart in the championship game. After being down by two goals in second half they played hard and never gave up. The team had a combined 37 goals in four games including tournament leading scorers included Ben Jackson ’17 (16 goals, 8 assists), Jack Hathaway ’17 (9 goals, 6 assists), and Simon Slinkard ’18 (4 goals, 1 assist).

Griffin Jasin ’17 was excellent in goal and had eighteen saves for the tournament.

Golf Team Updates

- Jack Wilson, Head Coach

The Chaminade Golf Team captured second place in the Bulldog Battle held at Winghaven Country Club. The twenty-team field included some of the area’s best golf teams. The team score was only 5 strokes behind the winner, Lafayette. Matt Sacchettini ’16 and Joe Terschluse ’17 led the charge with 77s, followed by Tommy Rudawsky ’15 (79) and Andrew Horner ’17 (79).

A second varsity squad took on Westminster at Whitmoor and came away with a victory. Colin Stolze ’18 was a medalist with a 40, followed by Drew Keeven ’16 and Matt Johnson ’15 with 43s. The freshmen played Priory at Four Seasons and lost by a few strokes. Louis Aquino ’18 was a medalist with a 38.

The 2015 Varsity Tennis Team finished the season with a 14-9 dual match record, building on the strong campaign from 2014. Individual and team goals were set at the beginning of the season, and many were accomplished. The first dual match set the tone for the remainder of the season with a victory over CBC. Jeong Woo Choi ’16 was the man of the match as he won both of his doubles and singles matches.

The highlight of the 2015 season, was finishing in first place as a team in the MCC

Tournament. First place medalists included Trevor Allen ’15, Thomas Waters ’18, Tommy Joe Richardson ’18, and Eric Schmitt ’17. As district play concluded, Trevor Allen was able to finish in first place in singles district play, and qualify for the state finals in Springfield.

He sufferd a loss in the semi-finals, and finished third in state. He was nemed to the Tennis All-Metro 2nd Team.

The JV Tennis Team’s season had a chilly beginning, with a tournament in Illinois in which the players had the opportunity to play three different teams and had their first win, sweeping Westminster. The JV team as a whole ended with a record of 9-5-1. Some of the more seasoned players met the challenges of the season admirably, with highlights including Matt Isaak ’17, who went undefeated in the opening tournament, and Tommy Joe Richardson and Eric Schmitt, who took first place at the MCC tournament for third doubles at the varsity level.

Track Wrap-up

- Jim Chrismer ’85, Head Coach

The Varsity Track Team had a great season in 2015. They opened the year with two early wins in the Marianist Invitational and the Chaminade Tri Meet, which featured Lutheran North and Priory. As the season kicked into high gear, several school records were broken including the 4x200, 4x100 and the triple jump.

Despite lacking depth, the squad featured above average competitors in nearly every event. Specifically, Mike Barlow ’16 consistently medaled in every meet as did Patrick Ganninger ’15 in the high jump, Bryce Johnson ’17 in the hurdles and the 4x100 relay team of Andre Whitley ’17, Nate McGhee ’17, Darius Daies ’17 and Damon Bonds ’17. The regular season ended with exceptional results in the Ladue and Clayton Invitationals, two of the top meets in

the region, as well as a third place finish in the Metro Catholic Conference meet.

As the post season began, expectations were high that the team would have a successful run to the State Meet in Jefferson City, but stormy weather and injuries dashed their hopes as only Damon Bonds (long jump) and Bryce Johnson (110 hurdles) advanced to the sectional meet. Expectations will be high next season as nearly the entire squad returns in 2015-2016.

Volleyball Wrap-Up

- Eric Burdge ’89, Head Coach

The Varsity Volleyball Team had a successful season. Anchored by strong senior play by outside hitter Jack Gerker ’15 and setter Jack Kellett ’15, the team was able to compete well in many of the matches. The team had a five match win streak, which included a huge win at CBC. The addition of Gage Mize ’18 allowed the team to attack in various ways. Gerker and Mize led the team with both average 3.5 kills. Michael Ji ’17 was in the top ten in blocks and Clayton Trentham ’17 was a superb libero throughout the year. The team had a chance to win districts, but fell just short against St. Mary’s in the second game of the match 25 23. It was a good season with a bright future ahead.

Special congratulations to Jack Gerker and Gage Mize who were named to the Missouri Boys High School All-State Volleyball Team.

Jack has been named as a Class 3 All-State 2nd Team and Gage as a Class 3 Honorable Mention.

Water Polo Wrap-up - Keith Mug, Head Coach

Varsity Water Polo finished the season 9-10 (4-1 in conference) with a loss to Lafayette in the State Quartefinals. It was Chaminade’s first time advancing to the quarterfinals since 2009. Highlights of the season included a trip to Chicago and several one-goal games.

The team was led by Ellis Burgett ’15, Eriq Byrne ’15, Stephen Mayo ’15 (co-captain), Zachary Pogue ’15 (co-captain), and Jack Riegel ’15.

Zachary Pogue was named an all-conference second team goalie selection. Ellis was a first team conference selection and third team all-state selection. Ellis led the team with 56 goals and 13 assists. Varsity’s strong finish was coupled by fifth place state finish for the JV Red Devil water polo team. The team impressed while being comprised mostly of freshman. The future looks promising for Chaminade Water Polo.

Scholar-Athlete

Zach Wilhelm ’15 was named a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete for 2015. Zach was one of thirteen athletes from over 140 schools in the St. Louis area to receive this award. The foundation presents each recipient with a financial scholarship for college.

Additionally, Zach was named Chaminade’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete.

Each year the Post recognizes one senior from each area high school who excels in both the classroom and athletics. Zach was a member of the National Honor Society, a Gray House Captain and has been a member of the Football Team and Wrestling Team since his seventh grade at Chaminade.

Zach will attend the University of Texas at Austin and plans to major in business.
