T

his time of year, you can find Fr. Ralph roaming the hallways of Chaminade.

While the weather is chilly, it’s always warm when he is around. The entire Chaminade community can attest to Fr. Ralph’s caring, witty, and loving personality. Whether you’ve been to his Mass, spent time with him at one of Chaminade’s events, or seen him around campus taking pictures, you know that he is a man of many gifts and talents. In an effort to get to know him even better, I had the opportunity to sit down and catch-up with Fr. Ralph.

I started our interview with the traditional, “Where did you go to school?” question. I didn’t quite know what I was getting myself into by asking that question. His impeccable educational accomplishments include: • • • • • • •

St. Mary’s High School in south St. Louis Bachelor’s Degree from St. Mary’s University in Texas Master’s Degree in English from Northwestern University Master’s Degree in Moral Theology from Saint Louis University Doctor of Ministry Degree in Pastoral Counseling from Andover Newton Theological School Certificate in Theological Studies from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley Master’s Degree in Educational Administration through the University of San Francisco

It quickly became clear to me that Fr. Ralph was a student for life. “I like going to school, it’s a lot of fun. I just love learning and

there are so many interesting things to learn.

The world is a fascinating place. I am truly intrigued by everything,” he explained.

I came to learn that Fr. Ralph is not a creature of habit, from his love of learning to his love of traveling, he never stays in one place for long (except for the twenty-seven years at Chaminade, of course). He rarely visits the same restaurant twice, or cooks the same meal twice. He is constantly searching for something new to experience. So it shouldn’t surprise you that over the course of his lifetime, Fr. Ralph has traveled the world. His list of favorite places traveled include Bali, Bruges (Belgium), Salzburg (Austria), Thailand, and Paris (France). He has plans to travel to Scandinavia this summer.

With his vast knowledge of education and travel, Fr. Ralph can truly speak to the importance of the Global Reach Program at Chaminade. “It’s a big world out there; we need to be preparing our students to interact with that world,” he revealed as his personal conviction.

The Global Reach program has truly flourished over the past year. It is just another one of the accomplishments that Fr. Ralph can add to his Chaminade resume. In addition, he believes that his biggest accomplishment has come by acquiring the finest faculty and staff. He noted, “Along with that, we have enrolled the best students. Everything else that we’ve done has been to support the kids, to allow them to have the best experience. But the people, that’s what’s the most important.”

With an ever-growing population of students at Chaminade, Fr. Ralph’s vision for the school “isn’t complicated.” It includes, “Being

the best possible school that we can be for the young men whom we educate. We want them to develop into well-rounded, holistic, good human beings. That’s what Chaminade is all about, so it’s just not complicated.”

With a strong, clear vision, Chaminade is charging forward to strengthen the academic programs and implementing many other enhancements over the years. “The expansion of the Advanced College Credit Program has been just a small part of the solid development of the academic program. The House System has truly brought the school’s sense of family spirit to the forefront of who the school is,” he says.

Fr. Ralph spoke highly of the evolution of the school as a whole, but also had a twinkle in his eye as he described his dreams for the future.

In the end, it was clear that Fr. Ralph has a true affinity for education, travel, and so much more. I believe the entire Chaminade Community can agree that Fr. Ralph Siefert has transformed Chaminade for good. I know we are all excited to see what else he has in store for our beloved school!

Characteristics of Marianist Education - Peter Vlahutin, Associate Principal

I

t is not without coincidence that in times of great crisis in the life of the Church, God raises up men and women of sanctity to provide leadership and witness. It is with great pride and humility (pride in his willingness to seek holiness and humility in our attempts to follow likewise) that we are the first school in the world to be named in honor of one such saint: Blessed William Joseph Chaminade.

Blsd. Chaminade’s story is one consistently marked by seeking the will of God, even in the midst of great trial. Upon the outbreak of the French Revolution, he left the school at which he was teaching and moved to Bordeaux to serve the people of that diocese. When required to sign the oath of the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, he refused and went into hiding.

He ministered to the Church secretly and so successfully that the government later refused to believe that he had not fled France. As a result of various government changes, he was later exiled to Spain where he found himself in Saragosa.

It was there, while praying at the shrine of Our Lady of the Pillar, that Fr. Chaminade envisioned a community of lay people and religious working together to re-Christianize France, under the mission of the Mother of God: to bring Christ into the world. Upon his repatriation, Chaminade gathered lay people into sodalities for the strengthening of their faith. Characteristic of these sodalities was their diversity. They gathered men and women, lay people and clergy, wealthy and impoverished, professionals and members of the working class, all on equal terms. The renewal of faith led to many desiring a more formal commitment to the sodalities, and later to a more committed form of consecrated life, resulting in the formation of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate for women and the Society of Mary for men.

Since schools were a significant need in post-Revolutionary France, and Fr. Chaminade saw education as a means of evangelizing students in a life of faith, the Marianist communities developed teaching and running schools as a primary apostolate of the order. What started in France in 1816, spread to Switzerland in 1839 and to the United States in 1849, where our own Chaminade College was eventually established in 1910.

In 2000, when Pope St. John Paul II beatified Fr. Chaminade, he referred to him as the ‘saint of the laity.’ This was, in large part, because of Chaminade’s work with hundreds of lay people in his sodalities. The sodalities came

first; the consecrated religious life came second, flowing from the lay communities Fr. Chaminade had established.

In many ways, the Marianist charism has come full circle. There are more intentional lay Marianists worldwide, including three among our faculty, than professed Marianists. In 1996, recognizing the need to more intentionally articulate the Marianist approach to education, and to entrust it to the increasing number of lay teachers in their schools, the Society of Mary collaborated on an international document entitled Characteristics of Marianist Education,

The rotation of the symbols centers around the cross, which symbolizes Mary’s strong faith and focus and is a testimony to her life. It demonstrates how, as Mary formed her son, Jesus, Marianist educators strive to foster in their students the same mutual love and respect. Behind Mary is a bright corona which radiates around her. It gives Mary a privileged position as Jesus’ mother and ours, too. Finally, behind this corona is a larger white cross.

known as the CMEs. Chaminade responded initially by establishing a LIT Team, now the Mission Integration (MIT) Team, whose initial focus was the formal incorporation of the CMEs into all aspects of school life. The school’s mission statement was changed in 1999 to include the CMEs as the means by which we achieve our mission. In 2001, the CMEs were integrated into the ISACS accreditation and self-study process, whereby every identified plan or priority reflected one of the five CMEs.

The process of connecting our growth as a school directly with the CMEs has continued for two subsequent self-studies, including our most recently completed last school year. The MIT Team oversees our annual Marianist Educators Gathering that provides professional development to our faculty in the Marianist charism.

The MIT Team also coordinates a process of growth in the CMEs that provides feedback to the Society of Mary’s Office of Sponsorship on how we are maintaining our identity as a Marianist school – part of the process of maintaining our relationship with the Marianists.

Blsd. Chaminade’s vision of using education as a means of elevating the spiritual life of the community is why there is a faith dimension to every class and every activity at Chaminade.

His process of gathering young people in sodalities is why there is such a strong emphasis on community building and Family Spirit at Chaminade. His openness to men and women of all backgrounds is why we offer so many different academic and extra-curricular opportunities to our students, encouraging them to explore and develop their God-given talents. Blsd. Chaminade’s commitment to rebuilding the Church after the injustices of the French Revolution is why we emphasize service, working directly with those being served, and have such a strong commitment to the men at Fr. Dempsey’s. Blsd.

Chaminade’s mantra of ‘new times, new methods’ is why we strive to form young men who are prepared for the technological and societal challenges of the twenty-first century.

Just as there was something uniquely holy and special about William Joseph Chaminade, we believe that there is something holy and special about a Marianist Education.

Skip Viragh Center

H

alfway through our fifth year, the Skip Viragh Center for the Arts is going strong. We continue to support Chaminade in house events, liturgies, assemblies, drama and band productions, as well as host our regular partners such as Focus 11, Winter Opera St. Louis, Dances of India, St. Louis Wind Symphony and St. Louis Philharmonic. Every year we continue to book new and unique events that support our core values to bring together our school and our community.

This spring we hosted John O’Leary as he launched his new book, On Fire; the Theatre Circle Awards, which honors professional St. Louis Theatre; and David Kauffman ’78, who performed a concert for the community and provided the music for an all-school Mass.

As we continue to grow, we are always looking for new and exciting events to bring to the Chaminade and St. Louis communities.

On May 7, we will host the 17th Annual St. Louis Dance Festival, a dazzling array of the best dance in St. Louis, from ballet to hip-hop, Middle Eastern to modern, Indian to tap, and everything in between and on June 18, we welcome back Italian singer and songwriter Giada Valenti for a concert promoting her PBS special, From Venice with Love.

T

The auction is the school’s premier fundraising event. Fund-A-Need

P

roceeds from the Fund-A-Need project for the 2016 Auction will be used to purchase two new full-size vans. The goal is to provide a safe mode of transportation that will represent Chaminade in an exciting way. Our current fleet of vans is over ten years old and has a total of 350,000 miles, so replacing them is well overdue. These vans will benefit the entire Chaminade community and their uses will include the transportation of resident students, band members, small sports teams, PE classes, service projects, and so much more. A special thank you to the 115 families listed below who contributed to this project. Your continued support of our mission of educating our Chaminade Gentlemen is greatly appreciated.

Alumni Awards Honorary Alumnus Award Joseph C. Nettemeyer (McBride ’69)

T

he Chaminade Honorary Alumnus award is presented to someone who is not an alumnus of our school, but who has served Chaminade in an exemplary fashion. The candidate’s life should reflect that he embraces and lives the mission of Chaminade, and has manifested a long-term loyalty to Chaminade.

This year’s honoree, Joseph C. Nettemeyer, encompasses all of these. Joe is a living example of what Chaminade and the Marianist mission are all about. Now he can add “Chaminade alumnus” to his resume.

It’s been quite a year for Joe, as he was named 2015 Businessman of the Year by the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Joe is the President and CEO of Valin Corporation in San Jose, California, a 100% employee-owned company and a leading provider of technology solutions in the western United States. Under Joe’s leadership, Valin has grown from a $25 million to $150+ million company and was named as one of Inc.’s 500|5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies.

Prior to joining Valin, Joe worked for Emerson Electric for twenty-one years, where he held senior management positions in several divisions.

Joe is a 1969 graduate of McBride High School, which closed in 1971 due to shrinking enrollment. As a fellow Marianist institution, Chaminade reached out to McBride alumni and adopted them into the Chaminade Family nearly twenty-five years ago.

Joe’s life certainly reflects that he has embraced and lives the Marianist missions of both McBride and Chaminade. He believes that education is the great opportunity provider for all people.

He and his wife, Jane, personally fund twenty-two schools in Bangladesh, and Valin funds another ten schools with their business partners, providing opportunities for children to escape the tyranny of illiteracy. His commitment to

education by his company led to the creation of Valin University, which provides his employees with ongoing education to advance their skills.

He believes that a well-educated workforce creates a competitive advantage.

Inspired by, and truly grateful for his Marianist education, Joe helped lead the charge to raise more than $1 million for the McBride Educational Foundation, which funds scholarships for Chaminade students with family ties to McBride alumni. Currently, there are fifty-five Chaminade students who are McBride legacies and receive aid from the fund.

Having already made a significant $100,000 gift to the campaign, he gave an inspirational presentation last year at a gathering of more than 200 McBride alumni stating his desire to also recognize those McBride and Chaminade alumni who served their country.

He announced that he would match up to an additional $125,000 to help reach the $1 million goal. This transformational gift to the McBride Educational Foundation ensures that the McBride legacy endures for years to come in the lives of our Chaminade students. In recognition of his generosity and that of his fellow McBride alumni, their gifts also served to rechristen the middle school wing as McBride Alumni Hall.

T

he Alumni Association Board of Directors has the honor of proposing and reviewing candidates for the Chaminade Alumnus of the Year Award. To achieve this most distinguished honor, the honoree must have given his time, skills and/or resources to his alma mater; he must have been involved in school and/or alumni activities; he must have given of himself to his community outside of Chaminade; and he must have exemplified the spirit of Esto Vir in his daily life.

This year’s recipient is Brig. Gen. David G. Bellon, class of 1983.

After Chaminade, Dave attended the University of Kansas and graduated in 1987 with a degree in Business Administration. He is also a 1990 graduate of the University of Missouri Law School. He was then commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Gen. Bellon served seven years on active duty before joining the Reserves in 1997 and beginning a law career in Los Angeles.

Between 2003 and 2007, Dave was deployed three times to Iraq. In 2009, he was deployed to Afghanistan and served as the Chief of Operations for southern Afghanistan during NATO’s 2010 surge of forces to secure the vital areas around Kandahar City. Gen. Bellon’s service career has been outstanding and his personal decorations include the Combat Action Ribbon, four Bronze Stars as well as the Legion of Merit.

In 2013, then-Col. Bellon was elevated to Brigadier General Bellon in a ceremony held in the Skip Viragh Center at Chaminade.

With a huge American flag flying high above the campus, and surrounded by fellow Marines, family

and friends, Dave was confirmed by the United States Congress and became a one-star general.

During the ceremony, he talked about his time at Chaminade and how “Esto Vir” has helped him when facing difficult times.

Prior to his last tour in Afghanistan, Dave moved his family back to St. Louis to be closer to family and to give his son, Jack ’16, a chance to attend Chaminade. Dave continues to serve in the Marine Corps Reserve in a variety of capacities. In his civilian life, Dave is a partner at St. Louis based QRS Recycling where he facilitates the use of renewable resources.

Dave has not only demonstrated undaunted loyalty and commitment to his country, he also continues to serve his alma mater. He is an active member of the Board of Trustees and has led the Senior Leadership sessions for the past several years. He is a proud football dad and can be seen “moving the chains” after every play at varsity games.

Dave’s dedication and spirit of Esto Vir challenge all of us in the Chaminade Family to become the best we can be. His deep sense of loyalty to Chaminade, his community, and our country is to be commended and celebrated. He truly lives our Chaminade mission to the fullest

and continues paying it forward to the benefit of others in the Chaminade community.

Dave said it best himself… “If I can offer anything to the boys it would be to acknowledge the responsibility to live a life of service in some capacity… I keep doing it because it forces me to be better than I am willing to be on my own… Success for Chaminade is to have the boys acknowledge it (even though they may not know how they will serve yet) and then stay connected with each other throughout their lives, so they can hold each other to their obligations to serve and lead.”

Father-Son Banquet

he 77th Annual Father-Son Banquet was held on February 11 at the Frontenac Hilton. More than 500 fathers and sons enjoyed the time-honored Chaminade tradition of spending an unforgettable evening together at the banquet.

Attendees enjoyed the Chaminade Jazz Band and Contemporary Music Group, photographs with family and friends, and inspirational speakers. Senior Brendan Robert gave a heartfelt speech with a reflection on his relationship with his father and the significant

role John Lawrence played not only in his life, but many lives at Chaminade. The keynote speakers, broadcasting legend Jay Randolph, Sr., and golf and radio personality Jay Randolph, Jr., reflected on the importance of the father-son relationship. Fr. Ralph noted that Jay Randolph, Sr. gave the speech at the first Father-Son Banquet he attended as a teacher at Chaminade in 1968. Joe Lordo ’75 mentioned that he was also in attendance at that banquet, as a sixth grade student with his father.

Fr. Ralph presented the Bro. Fred Weisbruch, S.M. Award to Peter Sheahan ’82 for his

ongoing service and contributions to Chaminade. Bro. Weisbruch served as principal of Chaminade from 1969-75 and won the respect and admiration of faculty, students and parents for his superb leadership and the outstanding contributions he made to the development of the school. Each year, the Fathers’ Club gives an award in his name to the father of a Chaminade student who has, to an outstanding degree, emulated Bro. Weisbruch in his service and dedication to Chaminade College Preparatory School.

ill Edwards ’43 came to Chaminade in 1936 as an energetic sixth grader. He truly enjoyed his Chaminade experience and did it all – sports, student leadership, public speaking, and sodality. He never forgot those days and remained loyal to CCP, and friends with his classmates until his passing in early 2016.

Not only was Bill a proud alumnus, he was also a Chaminade parent and grandparent. In 2003, he was presented the Alumni Humanitarian Award. This prestigious award reads in part that the honor is “presented to an alumnus who has given exceptional service to his community. He further provides undaunted support through his time, skills and/or resources to a charitable or non-profit organization.”

What began as a promise to secure a single airplane to deliver supplies and medical help to nomadic people in Africa, evolved to the establishment of Wings of Hope. Bill was the co-founder of the international humanitarian organization, which was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1967. Bill served as executive vice-president and COO for more

than twenty years. The organization flourished and continues to meet the needs of forgotten and suffering people around the world. They will also help transport ill patients across our own country for medical treatment.

Part of Bill’s legacy is his continued support of Chaminade through a charitable gift annuity he established in 2002. Upon Bill’s passing, Chaminade received the balance of his annuity and designated it to a scholarship he felt passionate about. Bill’s gilft will provide support for Chaminade students into the future.

State Championship Football Game Brings Generations of Players Together

I

t’s not every year that we celebrate our Red Devils playing in the state championship football game. If fact, it was forty-three years ago that Chaminade made its only other appearance when they took the field at Chillicothe High with the 3A state championship on the line.

That changed on November 28, 2015, when the Red Devils (13-1) returned to the title game to face Fort Osage (13-1) for the Class 5 title at the Edward Jones Dome.

No one was more excited for the current band of Devils than the 1972 team.

Ray Ruzicka ’73 and Craig Palubiak ’73 presented more than twenty-five notes of encouragement and best wishes from the 1972 players to the 2015 team before their walkthrough practice.

It was a special time for both generations of Red Devil players.

Speaking about contacting his 1972 teammates, Ray said, “You reach out to them forty years later and it’s like it was just yesterday.

They start sending emails about how special that time was. It’s pretty cool. Maybe it was the loss that bonded us together even more because it was a tough one.

“We wanted [the team] to know that we were really rooting for them. Everyone seemed very appreciative, thanking us afterwards,” he continued.

The 2015 Red Devils gave a valiant effort, but could not overcome Fort Osage quarterback and Kansas State-recruit Skylar Thompson, who had a record-setting 455yard offensive performance with four passing touchdowns and three more on the ground in the 63-28 Fort Osage victory.

The future looks extremely bright for Chaminade as the team says goodbye to only four seniors going into next year. Red Devil fans are certainly excited for what the 2016 season will bring. With any luck, we’ll be tailgating before the big game again before you know it!

Chaminade Sports Baseball Preview

– Chris Chiburis, head coach

There’s a lot of excitement in the air, even if it is wet air, for the 2016 baseball season.

The baseball program welcomes back 2010 graduate Mason Hutson as an assistant varsity coach. We also had over eighty players try out for baseball this year.

The varsity will have a nice blend of experience and youth. On the youth side, freshmen Hunter Shaheen, Teddy Phelan, and Tyler Fogarty will be making their debuts. Teddy and Hunter will be battery mates behind the dish as catchers and Tyler will be patrolling up the middle as an infielder. The experience comes from seniors Peter Zimmermann (Tulane recruit) and outfielder Andrew Goneck both three-year players. In between those two groups comes a group of veteran juniors who started last year as sophomores – pitcher/IF Hunter Becker, pitcher/OF Bennett Hacala, pitcher/OF Mike Hellmann, and outfielders Drew Signorelli and Jack Sudekum. Senior pitcher Isaac Olson (Cincinnati recruit) will anchor the pitching staff. Seniors JP Winkler, Dylan Chrismer, and Ryan Fogarty will provide positive leadership for all to follow. Also on the team are seniors Kyle Schultes and Michael Roarty who look to contribute, along with new Juniors Michael Grigone, Jack Komlos, Matthew Proskey, Eric Renner, Henry Thomasson, Michael Wilson, and John Yeager.

Camfield will contribute right away in B-team games. Henry Gladson is returning after starting games last year as a freshman on the B-team at first and as a pitcher. Henry also will provide the big bat in the line-up showcasing much power and pop. Newcomers include Cam Allen, Ryan Cavanaugh, Dominic Davis, Jack Fogerty, Nolan Geis, Taiga Higuchi, Will Kaiser, Cole Sepac, Alex Stewart, Adam Trunko, Fischer Vrabely, Will Winkler, Sam Wolkey, Peter Wohlstadter, and Nathan Wunderlich.

Finally we get to the newest Red Devils to wear CCP on the hat and Chaminade across the chest. There is a lot of skill and talent in the freshmen class, so competition will be intense.

Freshman Basketball – C Team – Joel Timmerman, coach

This year the freshman C team made immense progress. Every player worked to their best ability and showed their best effort during both practices and games. It was because of their attention to detail that we were able to make strides with our abilities throughout the season. Each player was an irreplaceable asset to the team. It is because of their hard work throughout the season that each player was able to be utilized in every game and in any situation. Everyone knew their role and how to step in and be productive for our team.

By the end of the season, we were winning against teams who had previously beaten us and we were able to be competitive in any game, against any opponent. The best memory from this season was beating SLUH on their home court after being down nine points going into the fourth quarter. We held SLUH to zero points in the fourth, forcing the game to overtime. The game changed leads multiple times during overtime, ultimately leaving us up two with less than a second left and the other team on the free throw line. After they made their first free throw, we called timeout and put our best rebounders in the game. Our game plan was to get a hand on the ball and tip it as far away from the basket as possible so time would expire, as there was only 0.6 seconds left in the game. Chris Handy sealed out his man on the box and sent the ball into the stands as the final

buzzer sounded. We had defeated a conference team during an away game that had previously beaten us. It was a great feeling for everyone involved.

Freshman Basketball – D Team – Lamar Colvin, coach

Chaminade freshmen D team ended its season with a 17-7 record. It’s been a good year, thanks to the talent and effort of our team. I am extremely proud of the team’s hard work and the discipline. It is a direct reflection of their parents’s support and our partnering for a common goal of not only success in regards to wins, but being poised and encouraged with our losses. Each and every team member developed a greater sense of urgency and maturity that I hope will become a standard for them now and throughout their lives. We had our struggles, but those difficulties have created a solid foundation and platform for them all and, more importantly, will assist in their growth as they step into manhood.

Some notable highlights: Our team went 12-2 in our last fourteen games. We won the Chaminade Tournament by beating a really good Borgia team. Three players (Xavier Stevens, Grant Pfister, and Teddy Phelan) scored twenty or more points in a game. Jimmy Mullen hit two back-to-back three pointers against Ladue to tie the game and take us to overtime.

Teddy Phelan hit a game winning three pointer to beat SLUH in our own tournament. Lastly, we beat Ladue in double overtime. Ladue was 16-0 at the time. They ended their season with one loss.

I am proud to have served as the coach of this team and look forward to each player’s continued success on and off the court.

Golf Preview

- Jack Wilson, coach

The 2016 golf team is looking to build on its successful 2015 season. Chaminade finished in the top three in every tournament in which it participated in (Bantle Memorial, Webster Cup, Bulldog Battle, Columbia Invitational, District and Sectional). Falling just a few strokes short of competing as a team in the state tournament, the golf squad plans to go to Silo Ridge this May in search of another team state victory.

From the 2015 five-man tournament squad, Coach Wilson has four returning players. Senior Matt Sacchettini, Juniors Andrew Horner and Joe Terschluse, and Sophomore

Colin Stolze played in multiple local, state, and national tournaments in preparation for the upcoming season. This year’s twelve-man varsity team is filled with talent, and the junior varsity squad and new batch of freshmen are eager to move up the ranks to compete for a shot at making the varsity team.

Tennis Preview

– Chris Salaveria, head coach

The 2016 varsity tennis team returns eight of the ten players from last year’s team that won the 2015 MCC Conference Team Tournament for the first time since 2007. This year’s team is led by returning seniors Nate Geraty, O’Connor Richardson, and Jack Waters. All three players will play a vital role in maintaining the high standard of TEAM dual match records in 2014 (14-8) and 2015 (14-9). Juniors Ben Hasara and Jack Marchant, and sophomore Thomas Waters are other returning varsity tennis players who are looking to always improve upon past results and keep the positive energy flowing within our team. Eric Schmitt ’17 and Tommy Joe Richardson ’18 round out the varsity roster, and will be positive contributors in our dual match lineup.

Track Preview

– Jim Chrismer ’85, coach

The track & field squad began practice on February 29 with a roster that includes both new recruits and returning veterans. Returning athletes to watch include pole vaulter Mike Barlow ’16, Andre Whitely ’17 and Damon Bonds ’17. Mike opened up the first practice with an amazing 13’ vault and looks to reach close to 15’ or better by the end of the season.

Andre Whitely broke both sprinting and jump records last year and most likely will garner quite a few points for the team this year.

Damon Bonds is a returning state qualifier in the long jump and is hoping to compete for the championship this year.

The schedule this year includes some of the top meets in the area including the very competitive Ladue Invitational and the Clayton Invitational, which draws some of the best teams from the bi-state area. Of course, the highlight of the season prior to the state series of meets will be the Metro Catholic Conference Championship, held here at Chaminade on May 5. The Chaminade team will try to improve on their third place finish last year and use that success as a springboard to state competition at the end of the month.

Water Polo Preview – Keith Mug, head coach

The Chaminade Water Polo program enters the 2016 season coming off a quarterfinal loss in the state tournament and a #8 ranking in the end of the season state coaches’ poll. The team will have a new look this year having to replace four of seven starters last year. They will look to generate offense through 2m center Patrick Riegel ’17 and utility players Joe Roach ’16, Jack Brown ’16, and Dominic Bernardi ’16.

Coach Mug, entering his fifth year as coach, is excited about the energy and strong numbers in the program.

The JV team, led by Beth Dunlap, looks to continue to build on the success of last year’s fifth place finish in the JV championship tournament. The team is led by a solid core of sophomore players that have all shown great improvement over the last year.

Our middle school wrestling team is a source of strength each year for our high school squad, which benefits from experienced wrestlers who can compete immediately at both the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels.

Wrestling Wrap Up – Todd Schumacher, coach

The 2015-16 season was a success for the Red Devil wrestling team. The year was highlighted by sophomore captain Danny Conley’s sixth place finish at the state tournament.

Danny finished the year 39-7, and became the youngest wrestler in Chaminade’s history to place at the state tournament. (He also qualified for state last year as a freshman.) Captain Matt Proskey ’17 posted twenty-one wins this season and made considerable progress competing at 138-pound weight class. At 106 lbs, Cory O’Dell ’19 provided a spark for the team, finishing 16-12. Brad Sanchez ’18, at 113 lbs, came within one match of qualifying for the state tournament. He had one of the strongest performances for the squad at districts, and will certainly be a big contributor during next year’s campaign. The other Red Devils who showed a lot of promise competing at the varsity level were Nick Mollet ’18, Alex Hart ’19 and Simon Slinkard ’18. Head coach Todd Schumacher was pleased with the strong work ethic his team possessed, and is confident there will be multiple Red Devil state qualifiers next season.

McDonald’s All-American

Congratulations to basketball forward Jayson Tatum ’16 who has been named a McDonald’s All-American.

McDonald’s came to Chaminade on February 29 to present Jayson with his jersey for the game. The contest will feature twenty-four of the top high school basketball players in the nation and will be played on March 30 in Chicago. ESPN will televise it nationally.

Jayson is a three-time MCC Player of the year, two-time Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year and has three gold medals with Team USA (2015 FIBA U19 World Championship, 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship and 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship).

T

he Chaminade basketball program has recently been elevated to new heights by world-class players and inspirational coaches, but all of those involved would agree that our recent success is larger than just a few individuals. Every single member of a team must bring something to the table in order for the whole team to be successful. Only so many people can be dead-eye shooters or high-flying dunkers, so what about those other guys? How do they contribute?

During a recent exercise in journalism class, I posed this question to senior David Hermeling, one of my teammates on the basketball team and a pioneer of the Chaminade Bench Mob. He, along with a few other teammates, figured out exactly what they could bring to that table – and they’ve been bringing it all season.

“I really like to cheer on my teammates.”

Dave said in my interview with him. “I just gotta contribute in any way I can.” Dave is quick to give credit where it’s due, admitting that Chaminade was not the first team to have a Bench Mob. “The first time we saw it was on the Monmouth bench.”

The Monmouth Basketball Bench Mob is a small group of about four players from Monmouth College who, for one reason or another, don’t get the minutes that some of their teammates. So like Dave, they had to find their thing. The Monmouth bench celebrations have since gone viral, landed them on ESPN and Sports Center numerous times, and inspired others like them to carry on the team spirit through the celebrations.

I asked Dave what his favorite celebrations were. “I always like ‘The Bird’ actually,” Dave said. “It’s definitely one of my favorites. I also like doing ‘The Bernie.’ You just stand up and shake around.”

The life of the Chaminade Bench Mob was brief. The athletic director and basketball coaches concluded that the methods that Dave and the rest of the gang were using to support the team were becoming a distraction. “It was really hard for us to take in.” Dave said. “That was what we brought to the team. That kinda shut us down.”

Faced with this disappointment, the shortlived Chaminade Bench Mob had to refocus their energy, and Dave and the guys haven’t

On Being a Twin

Some call me lucky, others say I’m cursed, but being a twin is quite possibly the best thing that has ever happened to me in my life. I never have to do anything alone. I always have someone to hang out with, so I never get bored.

Most importantly, I always have someone to blame when things go wrong in the house: “As a matter of fact, it was Max who took the car without your permission, Dad.”

Moreover, being a twin helps me, personally. I have someone similar to myself to learn from and develop with, year after year. Plus, having a twin is like having a full-time friend, 24/7/365. It never gets boring!

The worst thing that comes with being a twin is that we are constantly compared or confused: “As a matter of fact, I am Alex and that is Max over there, Dad.”

Overall, the benefits of being a twin greatly outweigh the drawbacks. I encourage everybody to get one of his own. But, you can’t have Max. He’s mine!

“Yeah it kind of stinks that we can’t do it anymore,” Dave admitted, “but it hasn’t really changed us. We still try to bring what we can to the team.”

Although they aren’t getting much playing time and can no longer make a scene on the bench, the contributions of Dave and the rest of the Bench Mob are undeniable. They come to practice every day, work hard, and make everyone better. Even the little things they do, like giving everyone five when they come out of the game, and clapping when a teammate does something good, show that they are still committed to the success of their teammates and Chaminade basketball. And if we are to reach our goals this season, it will be because of every member of our program – from the coaches, to the stars, to the last man on the bench.

ELCOME TO THE CHAMINADE FAMILY!! The Enrollment Management Office was busy again this year welcoming students to our Chaminade community. We have accepted over sixty new freshman, ten new eighth graders, thirty new seventh graders and sixty-five sixth graders.

With over 165 new students in our Chaminade Family, we have much to celebrate! We anticipate enrollment to be at 825 students, and are grateful to be able to reach more families.

So why do young men choose Chaminade? One of our new incoming freshmen from St. Catherine Labore, Nathan Gawrych, explains why he came to Chaminade:

Q. What are you most excited about in high school?

A. I am mostly excited about meeting new friends. I am excited about being faced with new challenges and experiences.

Q. How does your dad, an alumnus, feel about you also attending Chaminade?

A. My dad said he feels honored that I am going to the same high school as him. He added that he is proud of me and blessed to have such a great and talented son. He is very happy for me that I am now a part of the Chaminade Family.

Q. What events helped in your decision to pick Chaminade (high school nights, shadow visit, open house, coming to sporting events on campus, etc.)?

A. I had always heard good things about Chaminade. I had already known some students attending Chaminade as middle schoolers, and they also persuaded me to attend Chaminade. My soccer coach, Erik Carretero, also works at Chaminade, and

A. I, of course, would love to be a part of the soccer team. I would have to look into the different clubs and extracurricular activities that Chaminade offers to the freshmen to get a better idea of what other activities I would like to participate in.

Q. What was the first thing you did when you found out you were accepted to Chaminade?

A. The first thing I did was tell my family members and they all congratulated me and told me that they were proud of me. I was also proud of myself. I was very happy when I found out that I had been accepted into Chaminade and couldn’t be more excited about being an incoming student in August.

Canning Candids Resident Life in Action

Over Thanksgiving the Proost Family welcomed eighth grade resident students Andres Quintero and Martin Herrera into their home. The boys used the leftovers, and phone calls with their parents back in Mexico, to treat family and friends to a traditional taco feast.

They shredded the turkey, diced fresh garlic, made guacamole and salsa, and used corn tortillas. Martin texted his mother pictures of the ingredients as they worked to make sure they did everything correctly.

Giving Back Chaminade Fund

T

he Chaminade Fund is vital to our success. Each fiscal year, we ask Chaminade parents, alumni and friends to contribute at whatever level they are most comfortable.

These gifts go into our operating budget and you may indicate your preference as to how your tax deductible gift may be used – greatest need, academics, athletics, financial assistance, fine arts, retreat programs, or professional development for faculty and staff.

If you think your gift won’t make a difference - a gift of just $85 to $350 will cover the costs for a student involved in one of our many retreat programs; $250 can buy textbooks for a deserving middle school student; $1,662 will buy the over two tons of clay used in art classes each year, $2,500 can provide much-needed support for one of our dedicated faculty earning their masters or doctorate degrees; $5,000 is the average amount of financial assistance awarded to 40% of CCP students. Cumulatively, these gifts directly impact the life of every Chaminade gentleman.

early $100,000 was earmarked by our donors specifically for the endowed scholarship program during December and we are most grateful for that growth.

We are proud to announce the establishment of three scholarships: The Richard Boyles ’56 Scholarship in Support of Incarnate Word Parish and Chaminade’s Resident Program

Incredibly, this is Dick’s fourth scholarship at CCP. The focus of this scholarship is to encourage young students from his parish of Incarnate Word to attend Chaminade and experience some of the same things he enjoyed.

Dick also has an understanding of the importance of our resident program and its beneficial effect on the overall experience of all of our students. With this in mind, he has agreed that if a student from Incarnate Word is not identified that the recipient for that year will be a qualified resident student entering his senior year.

The Groneck Family Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Carol and Jack ’54 Groneck to honor Jack’s father, who enrolled his son at Chaminade as a fourth grade resident student after the death of Jack’s mother. Chaminade became his family, and to this day he credits the Marianist brothers and priests with his spiritual growth and the foundation of his strong Catholic faith. Jack and Carol created a family tradition by enrolling their sons, John ’80 and Dan ’82, at Chaminade.

Dan’s son, Andrew ’16, continued the tradition when he enrolled for his freshman year. The Gronecks have indicated that the scholarship should be awarded to a bi-state resident student, with preference given to a student who has suffered the death of a parent.

The John Lawrence Memorial Scholarship

The untimely death of dynamic teacher and caring mentor John Lawrence this fall impacted all who knew him. As families do, we came together to support his family and each other. The Marianist Community along with John’s family and friends vowed to have a lasting memorial to his dedication to our students.

This scholarship will provide financial support for a high school student who demonstrates the characteristics that John exemplified: a well-rounded student who is in good standing academically, involved in co-curricular activities, displays potential and talent in CSPN, STEM or broadcasting courses, and who lives Esto Vir.

For the 2015-16 academic year there are seventy-one Endowed Scholarships ranging from $600 to full tuition, and this year’s total of $348,714.

You can support these scholarships by making an outright gift of any amount to the individual funds. Various scholarships benefit from the proceeds of Middle School Mixers, the Esto Vir Auction, the Chaminade Golf Tournament, the Alumni Golf Classic, and Chaminade Trivia Night. Additionally, sending a mass card from Chaminade, purchasing a Chaminade belt or supporting the E Pluribus Unum Scholarship’s student-run activities all support a scholarship.

These scholarships are awarded annually and all students are considered. There is no application process. Awardees are determined based upon specific scholarship guidelines, using faculty and counselor recommendations, and finally approved by the principals. ince 2003, Chaminade’s house system has followed Blessed Chaminade’s sodality model of nurturing faith within small communities. This year campus ministry and the house system created the House Service Program (HSP), which has further advanced the faith component of the house system in an exciting, hands-on way.

The HSP pairs each of Chaminade’s five houses with a partnering community service agency for the course of the year. The house is challenged to perform both charitable and service works for the agency, and the agency gives the house members an active service-learning experience.

In August, the HSP began when the faculty and staff performed a day of service at these partnering agencies. Each faculty member belongs to a house, and they all went to work with their house’s partnering agency so that they themselves could build up their faith community and so then share their service experience with their students. Biology teacher Alpha Bangura went with other Meyer House members to Bethesda Nursing Homes, Meyer’s partnering agency. After his experience, Alpha says that he has encouraged his Meyer students to spend at least an hour at Bethesda visiting with the residents and learning about their lives. He also reports that this is the first year his mentor group has seemed really inspired in their charitable efforts, which go to Bethesda.

The HSP was introduced to the entire student body in mid-September when a representative of each partnering agency spoke to the house members about the agencies’ missions. They also outlined some needs that the agencies had. For example, Gray House’s partner, Team Activities for Special Kids (TASK), told the students that they could benefit from

having extra money to buy new soccer equipment for their developmentally disabled clients. Hearing their need, MS 14, a middle school mentor group, held a putting contest to earn money for TASK. Peter Herrmann ’20, who helped organize the event, said that “because the TASK clients are kids our age who don’t have as many blessings as we do, I wanted to show them that we care about them by helping them have a little fun.”

There are eight mission collection days throughout the year through which the mentor groups raise funds for various causes, and this year it was decided that all the mission collections for each Brian Randa ’16, Orville Burkemper ’49, and Matt Isaac ’17 at St. Agnes Home house will go to their partner agency.

Alumni News

Col. Joseph Teiber, Jr. ’60 retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1999. Last summer he retired again, this time from the Round Rock, Texas Police Department where he was a program manager. He now volunteers for the police in their community outreach programs.

David Kauffman ’78 performed a concert at Chaminade’s Skip Viragh Center for the Arts on March 31. David is the founder and creative director of Good For The Soul Music, based in San Antonio, Texas.

Rafael San Miguel ’81 is a R&D scientist, flavorist, sweetener expert, and consultant for Boston-area food incubator start-up CHEW. To commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as the thirty-fifth anniversary of the American Chemical Society’s Committee on Chemists with Disabilities, Chemical & Engineering News asked Rafael and several other chemists with disabilities to reflect on their experiences in the workplace:

“I am a deaf flavor chemist. When you lose a sense, all of your other senses are far more acute. So, as a result of my disability, my sense of taste is profoundly more acute than most people’s. This is a huge competitive advantage. I can taste flavor changes and modifications far more sensitively than others, and this allows me to figure out problems and solutions on a much faster timeline. I think the biggest change or adaptation of all that has enabled me to succeed in my field is the transformation of how others who are not disabled are beginning to view those with disabilities for their ability.”

Mike Gabrawy ’87 has been living and working in Los Angeles since graduating from film school in 1992. Mike currently serves as the Chief Creative Officer for Arclight Films. His latest projects include “Lights Out” which will be directed by Brian de Palma and “Nest,” starring Kellan Lutz and Kelsey Grammar.

Felipe Orellana ’92 was named one of the Top Ten Hospitalists in the nation for 2015 by ACP Hospitalist, a publication of the American College of Physicians.

Felipe has been with IPC Healthcare for nearly twelve years and practices at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital in the St. Louis area. In addition to serving as IPC’s Practice Group Leader, he is the Chief Medical Officer for the hospital. Previous positions he held in the hospital were the Chief of Medicine and the Chief of Staff. He also plays key roles, including chairperson, for numerous committees and appointments in the medical staff.

Sam Cabbabe ’94 was elected and installed as president of the Saint Louis Metropolitan Medical Society on January 9. He is a plastic surgeon in private practice in St. Louis.

Chris Hamm ’02 graduated from the University of Missouri – St. Louis with a Masters of Social Work in December.

Ben Bishop ’05, goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightning, was named as a 2016 NHL All-Star for the first time. Congratulations, Ben! At press time, Ben had a 92.8% save percentage in fifty-one games played this season.

Jacob Stokes ’05 began the new year with a new job in the U.S. government serving as Senior Advisor in the Office of the Vice President, and reporting to Mr. Biden’s National Security Advisor, Colin Kahl. Jacob

Previously, Jacob worked at the Center for a New American Security, where his work focused on U.S. foreign policy and national security strategy as well as U.S.-China relations.

In that position, he travelled to Afghanistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bulgaria, Belgium, and Germany.

Tim Schweiss ’13 is in his third year at Mizzou and has made the Dean’s List for a fifth time, in addition to being accepted into the five-year BSAcc/MAcc accountancy program.

Recently Tim was awarded a Challenge Coin from the Columbia, Missouri police department for his participation in an investigation that ultimately cleared a student’s name.

Bradley Beal ’11 was among thirty players announced as finalists for the 2016 U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team. The final twelve-man roster will be announced by USA Basketball later this year.

“It’s awesome. That’s a blessing in itself. It’s a great group of names,” Beal said.

“For me, being one of the youngest in the group, being a part of an elite group, it’s an awesome feeling I cherish.”

Peter Hull ’12 will represent the Colorado State University Rams as a captain and defensive stalwart in lacrosse this season. Peter, a 2015 first team all-conference selection and honorable mention All-American, joins three additional captains looking to lead the Rams to a rebound season after missing the MCLA National Tournament for the first time in more than ten years.

David Bader ’15, a freshman at Mizzou, has been accepted into the American Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C. for this summer. While in D.C., David will also take classes at George Mason University.

Buddy Conley ’15 came in third place in his wrestling match for his first podium of his collegiate career and was one of the highlights of the day for the Indiana University wrestling team. He battled his way to a 4-1 tournament record and a third place finish as an unattached contestant. Conley won 3-2, 11-6, and 4-2 decisions on his way to the semifinals, where he lost to Myles Martin (Ohio State).

his is my last president’s letter and I would feel bad if I didn’t start out by thanking all the people who have helped me during my board tenure: Bill Potthoff ’86, who nominated me for the board more than ten years ago; Jim Pudlowski ’82, our Director of Alumni Relations when I started; David Nolda, who joined the Chaminade Family as our new Director of Alumni and Constituent Relations; and certainly my predecessor, Scott Bader ’76, and our vice-president, Peter Sheehan ’82, who both continue to work tirelessly for the school.

What a great year we have had at CCP! As alumni, we have all enjoyed reading and hearing the news talking up our Red Devil football and basketball programs. In addition to these most recent sporting success stories, we continue to have amazing music, art, and theatre programs and possibly the best (and ever-improving) academic program in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

I had the pleasure of (prematurely) taking my fourth grader to the Open House this year.

It would take a catastrophic event to prevent him from attending Chaminade. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him more excited about anything in his short nine years of life. I think this is a testament to not only an amazing CCP staff who put on a great display of what our alma-mater has to offer, but also the beauty of the campus, the strength of the student body, and a faculty who clearly love this institution.

I am approaching my twenty-fifth reunion, which seems surreal when I think about it. So many years since I fought my way through

But during those ups and downs, I was being taught not only the tools that would make me a better college student and a better law student, but a better person – a better man. I learned to be bold and considerate. To be strong and nice. To be aggressive, but not abusive. These are hard things for teenagers to learn and we are fortunate that CCP teaches these lessons very, very well.

Friends, family and clients continue to tell me that the “world is falling apart.” It’s easy to believe that if we simply watch the news or glance at Facebook. But when I look to my kids, and I look to the kids I meet at Chaminade, I have to say, at least from my seat, the world isn’t falling apart. We are raising and educating amazing kids. Kids with the ability to solve problems. Kids with the ability to see pain and suffering and unfairness and with the strength and compassion to do something about it. This is not a sign of the world “falling apart,” but of change. The same change each generation instigates and the same change each former generation thinks is our reckoning. I thank Chaminade for producing generation after generation of leaders.

As I move into the immediate past president role, I would like to send a special “thank you” to all those on the Alumni Board, past, present and future. Today our board is younger and more energetic than it has ever been, and I am sure they will continue to motivate our Alumni Association to stay involved with Chaminade for generations to come.

School News Aussie Nic Marchesi participated in the Australian-Chaminade exchange program in 2009 and made a huge impact on lives of many families, teachers and students while at Chaminade. Nic and his best mate, Lucas Patchett, both of Brisbane, were awarded the 2015 Young Australian of the Year. This was the first time the program has honored a duo. The 21-year-olds have been helping the homeless since 2014 with their Orange Sky Laundry – an old van they fitted out as a free mobile laundry.

The world-first idea has since grown to five vans in five Australian cities, run by more than 270 volunteers. Great job Nic!

Teacher Derio Gambaro ’03 and his wife, Katie, welcomed their first child, Madeline Kate, in January.

Congratulations to Mason Dare ’20 and Jack Moehle ’20, who play for the St. Louis Rockets Hockey Club. Their bantam team brought home the Missouri State Championship at the end of February.

JP Winkler ’16 was recently named Chaminade's Archbishop John L. May Service Award winner. The award recognizes the outstanding leadership and community service of students in Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

Congratulations to Alex Stewart ’18 for receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, on behalf of the President of the United States, to recognize the best in American spirit and to encourage all Americans to improve their communities through volunteer service and civic participation.

Counselor Mike Francis ’70 became a grandfather again in January. His daughter and son-in-law, Katy and Aaron, had their first child, Alice Jane.

Ryan Hoffman ’16 and Cole Hanson ’17 earned All-State Honors at the Missouri AllState Band and Jazz auditions in Columbia in December. Ryan placed first among jazz guitarists and performed with the All-State Jazz Band in January. Cole placed very high among jazz tenor saxophonists and earned the first chair in the All-State Honorable Mention Jazz Band.

Both of these musicians play in the Chaminade Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, and Contemporary Music Group.

Congratulations to teacher Jack Twellman and his wife, Molly. Jack and Molly were married over the Christmas holidays.

A big thank you to Tim Gauvain and his sixth grade soccer team. They collected soccer equipment, including shoes, socks, shin guards, and soccer balls, to send to Cameroon. Children in Cameroon often play soccer in bare feet and without a real soccer ball.

National Merit Finalists

Chaminade is proud to announce that two students in the Class of 2016 have achieved the status of a National Merit Finalist. This very distinguished honor has been awarded to Jacob Bai (below, left) and Brian Covington (below, right)! In 2015, 1.5 million students took the PSAT their junior year, which is a test that serves as an initial screen for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

New Middle School Language Program

Thank you Chaminade for your generous donations and support of the 2016 Chaminade Mission Week (February 22-26). Many students, faculty/staff and parents contributed to this year’s Mission Week in a variety of ways.

Thank you so much for your great support and generosity as we continue to serve and make a positive difference in our world. After four days of the 2016 Chaminade Mission Week, Chaminade raised a grand total of $13,565.11.

Chaminade is excited and proud to announce the expansion of the Middle School language program to include Chinese, French, and Spanish.

When one thinks of twenty-first century skills, often times learning a second language doesn’t immediately come to mind, but it should. In our evolving world, it is more important than ever to have a global outlook: to look beyond ourselves, to learn about the “other,” and engage those around us. Through the new Classical and Modern Languages’ Middle School curriculum, we will do just that.

Beginning next school year, seventh grade students will pilot an expanded language program that not only includes Latin, but the addition of Chinese, French, and Spanish.

The curriculum has been designed to offer the equivalent of one year of a high school language course over the seventh and eighth grade years. This new model will allow students to earn advanced college credit as early as sophomore year, and to pursue Advanced Placement level courses as seniors.

We are thrilled to offer this opportunity to our students and look forward to preparing them to succeed in high school and beyond.

2016 Catholic Schools Week Student Art Exhibit Sharing and Caring Drive

The entire school’s great dedication and service to the 2015 Sharing and Caring Drive makes this special collection such a huge success each year. Thank you!

Here are several highlights from this year’s three-week drive: • •

Nine mentor groups collected a combined total of $1,669.79 for the Pediatric Orthopedic Project.

Three mentor groups, the Administrative Office and the Counseling Department collected a combined total of $602.09 for the men at Fr. Dempsey’s Charities.

Also, the Chaminade Mothers’ Club and Campus Ministry agreed to make an additional donation so Chaminade could provide a Christmas present to each of the seventy-five men living at Fr. Dempsey’s Charities.

Fifteen mentor groups, the Chaminade Spirit Store and Business Office collected a combined total of $3,304.33 for three different Adopt-a-Family programs.

The Chaminade Advancement and Admission Offices held a bakesale for the John Lawrence Scholarship Fund and collected over $400.

Under Tim Gauvain’s leadership, the Chaminade soccer coaches, teachers and staff members coordinated a very successful CCP soccer fundraising event during Thanksgiving Break that raised over $3,366.00 for Friends of Kids with Cancer. One other mentor group collected an additional $364.00 for this cause.

Chaminade Awarded Full Accreditation by ISACS

Chaminade received notification from the Independent Schools Association of the Central States that we were awarded full accreditation status through June 2023.

For a crossover lesson, art teacher John Clever sketched the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe onto canvas panels and had his sixth grade students paint them. The students learned about the 1531 apparition of Mary to St. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin in Michele Schmidt’s theology class. The artwork will be framed and displayed near the theology classroom.
