Letter from the President The ESTO VIR JOURNEY - A Lifelong Pursuit - Rev. Ralph A. Siefert, S.M.

W

ith the close of another wonderful academic year, I like to reflect on the important moments that occurred over the last nine months. During this time, a common thread quickly became apparent to me. It showed up most recently at our annual Sports Hall of Fame Reception and Induction Ceremony. I noticed in almost all of the introductions and acceptance speeches that a universal idea was teamwork and teammates.

No one does it alone and no one expects anyone else to do it alone either. It's only been in the last few years that we've coined the phrase "Esto Vir Journey," but it is evident to me that this has been a theme at Chaminade for a very long time.

Chaminade alumni know Esto Vir intimately. Translating it is easy – "Be a Man." But defining just what Esto Vir means to the Chaminade Family is a little more complex. In most instances, it is easier to demonstrate to someone what Esto Vir means, rather than define it. To put it most simply, I believe it's integrity. Every single one of our students goes on his own Esto Vir Journey as he matures throughout his time at Chaminade. Each one begins his journey when he enters, whether that's sixth grade, ninth grade, or somewhere

in between. Hopefully, their individual journeys never really end; they just transition to the next phase of their lives.

It's patently clear at various events on campus that Esto Vir has a family component, too. Cheers of "WE ARE CHAMINADE" erupt from the teams and the stands at football and soccer games, wrestling meets and hockey games. And in the halls sometimes, too. Student support at drama productions and band concerts is continually growing. Their support of the community as a whole is staggering. It's evidenced by the tens of thousands of hours of community service provided by our Chaminade Gentlemen. These are young men who look beyond themselves to see the world at large and strive to make it a better place. It gives me great hope for the future.

The House System has become a tremendous asset to the Esto Vir Journey.

Not many schools utilize and nurture the relationships and instinctual respect between students. Tapping our seniors to be leaders in their houses and in mentor group (commonly known as homeroom), allows our middle school students to have a daily illustration of what Esto Vir means. The class of 2018 is now stepping up to take on that role and I know they will do so with their own unique flair.

They're already rising to the challenge. Junior Leadership Training at the Meramec Adventure Learning Ranch (pictured on the front cover) provided the class with circumstances requiring them to work together to complete some very physical tasks.

Students navigated a mud course, conducted wilderness

rescue training, and tested the storm worthiness of handmade shelters, among a myriad of other activities. Throughout it all, the MALR leaders emphasized teamwork, team building, and discovering your own inner strength.

We hope that by putting the young men through these courses together, they will be better able to lead mentor groups next year as seniors, incorporating the strengths of all their housemates, from sixth graders to seniors.

The Esto Vir Journey, as I said, shouldn't end at graduation. At the annual Blessed Chaminade Day Mass, I was honored to single out two alumni for their commitment to our school and our community. Fred Brown '54 and David McCoy '86 have truly taken ESTO VIR to heart. Their dedication and spirit of Esto Vir challenge all of us in the Chaminade Family to become the best we can be. They keep a deep sense of loyalty to Chaminade and the community, which is to be commended. More information about these exceptional men can be found on page 17.

As you read through this magazine, I hope you can see the undercurrent of Esto Vir. Campus Ministry and Enrollment Management have both provided glimpses into how their departments are working with students on their individual Esto Vir Journeys. The resident students in Canning Hall are thriving, many of them continents away from home.

We hope you have a relaxing summer and we look forward to seeing our entire Chaminade Family back in the fall!

Chaminade's Relational Approach to Instruction - Philip Rone, Principal

ver two hundred years ago in France, Blessed Chaminade understood the significance of the relational approach to teaching. This approach has been handed down through the years and is one of the cornerstones of Marianist Education.

Fast forward to Chaminade St. Louis in the 21st Century, we can still see the studentteacher relationship being maintained here.

Recently, Chaminade's faculty participated in a research study with the International Boys School Coalition on the impact of studentteacher relationships on learning. The research included boys' schools from all over the world and resulted in a book, For Whom The Boy Toils (Reichert & Hawley 2013). It validated the Marianist approach as a best practice for teaching boys. The study affirmed what Blessed Chaminade pointed out early on: relationships have a clear impact on learning for boys. It noted, "Successful learning is a social process, built upon relationships that embody qualities of trust and mutual respect."

Our school's mission is to prepare students to be the men the world needs them to be. To serve this mission, Chaminade must maintain an educational edge, therefore we constantly look for best practices while, at the same time, maintain our traditions and support the Characteristics of Marianist Education. One such educational practice that has received recent attention is differentiated instruction.

Differential instruction is a complex approach

with many elements, but in short, is a call to address the needs of the multiple types of learners with different methods of instructions.

One key component is the need for a nurturing environment.

This idea is not new to Marianist education, Blessed Chaminade emphasized it 200 years ago. Nevertheless, it is pivotal to differentiated instruction, as pointed out in Carol Ann Tomlinson's book The Differentiated Classroom. Followers of this method "work as consciously and purposefully in maintaining an inviting learning environment as they do in designing curriculum or implementing instruction." In differentiated instruction, teachers are called upon to be "students of their students." Marianist educators have always been called upon to develop a strong studentteacher relationship. They know the key to success is to understand who their students are as people, their interests, challenges, and strengths. It allows them to understand how best to respond to the students, not only as learners but as people.

Due to Chaminade's relational approach to teaching boys, our faculty is not only well suited to differentiated instruction, they actually have been practicing the approach for a long time. The evidence of this was apparent after discussions at a recent professional development meeting with our academic departments: • The English department offers options of written, verbal, or visual presentation on formal assessments.

• The Social Studies department has discussions within Canvas (our Learning Management System) and provides writing assignments that result in public speaking for "introverted" students.

• The Theology department creates a variety of assessment types that include group work as formative assessment.

• Classic and Modern Languages has created differentiated courses and levels while

creating self-assessments to set personal goals.

The Math department provides class time for individual practice as well as considerable devotion of time outside of class for one-on-one supplemental instruction.

Our Physical Education department provides daily formative assessments of individual skills.

The Science department allows students to select how they summarize new material and do diverse labs that let students explore their varied interests.

The Fine Arts department allows for alternative projects and open ended projects.

In Practical Arts, students write personal reflections on discussion boards and are provided scaffolding with PLTW activities that scale up to mastery of desired skill.

These are just a few examples of the work that each department is doing in regard to differentiated instruction.

Chaminade's faculty regularly considers new approaches while maintaining traditional methods, all in our never-ending pursuit to improve our students' education. The tradition of a strong student-teacher relationship approach supports the Family Spirit aspect of our mission within the Characteristics of Marianist Education, while the application of differentiated instruction addresses Adaptation and Change, another aspect of the Characteristics of Marianist Education.

As Marianist educators, our faculty seeks innovation in the field of education to guide our students in to the 21st century. Differentiated instruction is another tool in each teacher's toolbox of approaches in the classroom.

Though Blessed Chaminade never used the term differentiated instruction, the tradition of building strong student-teacher relationships allows us to maintain our quality, and keep our educational edge at Chaminade.

Chaminade distinguishes itself by providing the teachers, resources and structures not just to deliver a high-level education, but to invest in WHO THEY BECOME. Chaminade's House System is not simply a great way to organize the school community, but a very intentional way we provide leadership development and the sense of community that is a signature of the

men, then seniors, and move into another phase of their lives.

The Class of 2017 was particularly special for the Director of Enrollment Management, Dianne Dunning-Gill, who was involved in these students' enrollment to Chaminade. "I have had the opportunity to know each of these young men, and watch them grow taller, wiser, and into the men we hoped they would become. It has been an honor to play a small role in the great story that is each Chaminade 2017 Graduate."

In the Enrollment Management Office, we have had the privilege of meeting young men and their families as they are considering enrolling at Chaminade. We then get an opportunity to watch them grow into young

We are very blessed to have witnessed all of these Chaminade students in their growth into young men and examples of what Esto Vir is all about. We often consider "Who will be raising the Marianist House Cup as a House Captain his senior year? Who will be leading the Red Army in chants against MCC foes?

Who will be those quiet leaders, tutoring younger middle school students?" It is an incredible journey for each individual student

to realize his full potential, his inherent gifts and talents, and to challenge himself to use these to the best of his ability.

When visitors enter Chaminade Hall, the statement "Here Boys Come To Be Made Men" greets all of our prospective families. We know that there will be people along the way to help guide them such as fellow classmates, older students, teammates, teachers, coaches, and staff. It will not always be easy and there will

probably be struggles. There will be days that don't go as planned, but it is how Chaminade students respond and overcome that will be a true test of their character. We will watch them each year as they return in the fall, most likely a little taller, more mature, and energized for a new adventure in school. Then we watch them as they make their way across the stage at graduation thinking once again about the words in Chaminade Hall, "Here Boys Come To Be Made Men." It's not just writing on the wall, it has been their ESTO VIR Journey.

Fine Arts Ceramics Trip – Sean Kennedy '17

O

n the wall of teacher Mark Laury's Ceramics Studio is a quote from St. Francis of Assisi, "He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist." Mr. Laury has made it his mission at Chaminade to find the artists in the students and encourage their growth. This year, one such way he achieved his mission was by taking students to NCECA.

NCECA (National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts) is one of the largest ceramics conferences in the world, held this year in Portland, Oregon. Potters from around the world came to teach and learn the art of ceramics. As one of the five students who went on this trip, I can say first-hand that it was an eye-opening experience that will affect how I do art forever.

However, when I told people that I would be going on a ceramics trip, I was met with many confused looks. Some people did not know that the trip existed, others questioned why there would be a trip for ceramics, and some questioned the point of having an arts trip. I quickly realized that many people do not understand the point of having an arts trip, or what there is to learn on an arts trip.

These people likely view the trip as unimportant primarily because they have a complacency with how arts are currently moving for them. For many students, art is an "easy A" class that they do not have to care about or try very hard in. Ceramics teacher Mark Laury describes this, saying, "Cynicism and complacency have a way of quietly working their way into the actions of us teachers and students alike," going on to state, "Seeing ourselves from the outside looking in

with art communities really illuminates what we do well and where we need to improve."

This, to Mr. Laury, is why the trip matters.

Mr. Laury goes to the conference by himself every year, but this year was his first time escorting students.

"Taking in the conference through their point of view was enlightening for me," he says. Fine Arts Continued Senior Art Show – Marshall Karchunas '17

W

ith frames hung perfectly, pottery placed on pedestals, and jazz music humming in the background, months of collaboration and planning came to a head as the Senior Art Show had its opening on April 25, in the second floor rotunda of the Skip Viragh Center. The show opened highlighting over twenty-five works from ten artists. Artworks ranged from the mediums of encaustic and sculpture to photography and painting by featured senior artists Trenton Almgren-Davis, David Buback, Justin Cook, Matt Isaak, Marshall Karchunas, Sean Kennedy, William Luo, Henry Stromberg, and Justin Wyms.

The reception, and the night, went exceedingly well, as artists, their families, friends, and teachers all showed up not only to show support for the senior class and the artists themselves, but also to take part in an appreciation of visual art. Expressing this same sentiment of gratitude, one artist stated, "It

was nice seeing friends, teachers, and family coming to the show and showing their support for what we do."

Furthermore, this Senior Art Show was also meaningful as it signaled an increased acknowledgement for what all of the artists do at Chaminade.

Red Devil Athletics Basketball

- Frank Bennett '01, Head Coach

After graduating eight seniors from the 2016 state championship team, this year's team was filled with new faces in new roles. The season started with a victory at the Chicago Elite Classic against Chicago Uplift. As the season progressed, the Chaminade basketball team had key victories against Sikeston, Champaign Central, and Althoff Catholic.

The team had an MCC record of 6-2 in a very competitive conference race. As the season concluded, the 2016-2017 team closed the regular season with a record of 20-5.

In post-season play, Chaminade defeated SLUH at SLUH for our fourth district title in five years. After defeating SLUH, Chaminade advanced past Pattonville and Jackson to return to our third consecutive Final Four, ultimately taking fourth (finishing with a 24-7 record on the year). In the third place game, Reggie Crawford '17 scored forty-one points to close out his successful basketball career. Karrington Davis '18 and Jericole Hellems '18 were named First Team All-State selections.

While the basketball program loses two proven seniors, the rest of the team will return.

With the core of the 2016-2017 team returning for 2017-2018, next season has the foundation to be a successful one!

Golf

At the state championship tournament, Chaminade finished third for the second consecutive season. A 309 in the second round gave Chaminade a 615 total. Rockhurst won the title, its state-record twelfth.

Joe Terschluse '17 finished his final high school tournament with a 36-hole total of 146 (73 on each round) and won by two shots.

Colin Stolze '18 followed his lead with a 76 in the second round and Drew Walsh '17 had a 77 while senior Andrew Horner's 83 rounded out

the Red Devils' final score of 309. Sophomore Zach Walsh's 84 was not used for the team score. Chaminade was the only area team to get a trophy this season. Saint Louis University High finished fifth and Lafayette was seventh of eight teams in the state tournament.

Lacrosse Goes to State

They were labeled a rebuilding team and were expected to end up somewhere in the middle of the pack. Despite that, after fifteen seasons and five trips to the state semifinals, lacrosse had its first championship appearance.

In the playoffs, Chaminade defeated second-seed DeSmet with a score of 7-6. The team ran in to a brick wall called MICDS in the finals and fell 16-5 on May 27. Chaminade's Peter Covington '18 scored twice and Simon Slinkard '18, Ben Jackson '17 and JaKobi Buchanan '18 had the other goals.

"It teaches them great lessons ... not to get down on each other," Chaminade coach Jason Seidel said. "We were underdogs most of the season. We shined in some of the big match-ups and won a hard-fought game (in the semifinals) after losing two times to De Smet."

Tennis

The 2017 Varsity Tennis Team ended their season with a 15-6 overall dual match record, and a loss to Marquette in the Sectional Round of the State Tournament (Sweet 16) on May 17.

Team highlights of the year include winning first place in the annual MCC Team Tennis Tournament. The first place individual medalist was Brendan Cunnane '20 in the fourth singles flight.

The team went on to capture the Class 2 District 4 title with dual match victories over CBC and Ladue. Individual qualifiers to the sectional round of the singles tournament included Ben Hasara '17 and Cade Cunnane

'20. Matt Isaak '17 was named the team's Most Improved Player and Grant Bowman '20 was named Most Valuable Player.

The varsity tennis team played at a high level throughout the tennis season and produced many memorable individual accomplishments, team victories and most importantly, had FUN playing tennis and representing Chaminade.

Track

- Jim Chrismer '85, Coach

The track & field team continued to impress this season, building off a successful season last year that saw multiple athletes qualify for the state championship meet in Jefferson City.

While the distance and pole vaulting squads were relatively young this season, they continued to improve with each meet. Their hard work and effort is a sign of good things to come.

Newcomer Stanley Williams '19 posted one of the better times in the area, running the 800 meters in under 2:05 several times already this season. Freshman phenom Keshon Campbell was the biggest surprise of the season. The young hurdler held the top time in the 110 high hurdles in St. Louis and qualified for the State Championship in the 110's and 300 intermediate hurdles at the end of May.

Big man Justin Wyms '17, who consistently threw the discus over 125', got better every week.

The real workhorse of the team all year was Damon Bonds '17. Damon's 100 meter dash time of 10.9 seconds, 200 meter time of 22.6 seconds and his long jump of more than 22' proved he was one of the fastest sprinters and best jumpers in the area. Damon also anchored a 4 x 100 meter relay team that looks to return to the Missouri State Championship and improve on their top 15 finish from last year.

Missouri State Track Results: The track team travelled to Jefferson City over the Memorial Day weekend to compete in the Missouri State Track Meet. On day one of the meet, three-time long jump state qualifier Bonds placed fifth overall with a jump of 22'4.25." Unfortunately the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Jared Taylor '18, Andre Whitley '17, Doug Agnew '19, and Bonds did not fare as well, mishandling the baton in the prelims, dropping them out of contention for the finals on the next day.

Saturday was a great day as Campbell placed fourth overall with a personal best time of 14.91 seconds in the 110 meter high hurdles.

Bonds also returned the track to compete in the 100 meter dash, placing sixth with a personal best time of 10.92 seconds.

Ultimately the team ended the meet in twenty-third place in the largest division, but seventh out of all of the large schools in the St. Louis area, knocking off much larger conference rivals SLUH and DeSmet. The state meet caps off what was a very good season for the track squad and the team looks forward to another successful season in 2018!

Volleyball

Why not us?

It was safe to say that there wasn't much reason to believe that a team that started the season 6-14-1 was going to amount to much of anything in the postseason. You definitely wouldn't believe that a team like that could end up being one of the top four teams in the state.

But that's exactly what happened this year with Chaminade volleyball. The beginning was rocky, for sure. Team chemistry was off, some players were adjusting to new roles, and early on it felt like this band of high schoolers was going to just ride out a mediocre season.

That all changed with a victory over Bayless High School. It was a game that turned into a victory, but the team won in such a way that they were definitely not proud. It was then that senior captains Michael Gauvain and Clayton Trentham stepped up. Tired of not playing up to their potential, the team met without the coaches to discuss problems, work out roles, and bring the group together. They started putting an extra foot forward, and all of their hard work showed. Coming off of a historic win over long-time rival DeSmet, the reborn team went into the district tournament with high hopes. Ranked as an overall #16

seed, Chaminade took care of the #20 seed, Lutheran South, before upsetting Affton, the #3 seed and last year's state champion. This gave them the upper hand and led them to beating the #7 seed, Rockwood Summit, to win their first district championship in almost ten years.

Carried by their excellent focus and superior fundamentals, Chaminade took out Oakville in the state sectionals to move on to the Class 3 state semifinals against St. Mary's.

The match was hard fought. Neither team played perfectly, but Chaminade played their hearts out. The whole time the team maintained the same mantra: Why not us? Why can't we be the best team in the state? Why can't we show everyone what we're made of, defy all odds, and come out on top?

In the end, St. Mary's bested the boys in red, but not without a fight. They had to earn every point, and everything was left out on the court. Over the season, Chaminade came together in ways that they never would have thought possible and achieved what to the hopeful was perhaps only a distant dream.

They may not have won it all, but this year's team certainly revealed a bright future for the Chaminade volleyball program. It was a historic run for the team that started 6-14-1, but finished 14-17-1.

Special thanks to the ten incredible seniors for giving CCP fans a year to remember.

Wrestling

- Todd Schumacher, Coach

The 2016-17 Chaminade wrestling team had a terrific season that was capped off with two Red Devils qualifying for the state tournament, and seeing the program's first state champion. Captain Danny Conley '18 won the 220-pound weight class state title with an exciting 2-1 overtime victory over defending state champion Jackson Berck of Francis Howell Central. Conley finished 49-1, which is the most wins in a season by any Red Devil wrestler. Danny also was a district champion, beating Berck in the final.

Sam Schultz '20 had a great campaign.

He posted a 39-15 record and qualified for the state tournament. He's only the third freshman Red Devil to earn a state berth. Schultz also won the DeSmet and Vianney Tournaments.

Captain Matt Proskey '17 was also champion at the Vianney and DeSmet Tournaments, while posting a 27-win record.

Brad Sanchez '18 was an impressive 23-7 on the year, and won Chaminade's Red Devil Invitational and Vianney Tournament.

Water Polo

- Keith Mug, Coach

Varsity water polo ended their season with a loss to Parkway South in the district tournament. The team finished with a record of 11-13 after playing a challenging schedule. Cocaptain Patrick Riegel '17 finished the season leading the team with 60 goals and 25 assists.

Patrick was awarded the Connor Keefe Varsity Player of the Year Award. He also earned First Team All-Conference honors. Co-captain Collin Karcher '17 was awarded Defensive Player of the Year, and earned Second Team AllConference Honors. Jonathan Struckhoff '18 received the Offensive Player of the Year Award with 57 goals and 19 assists. Goalie Jimmy Schneithhorst '18 received the team award for Most Improved Player and earned Second Team All-Conference Honors. Andrew Glickert '18 led the team with 34 assists. Highlights of the season included a second place finish in the Hornet Invite in Chicago and notching the most victories in a season since 2009.

State Champions

Congratulations to individual state champions Danny Conley '18 (wrestling) and Joe Terschluse '17 (golf).

Danny Conley is the first wrestler in Chaminade history to make the semi-final, final and go on to win the state championship title.

He defeated defending state champion Jackson Berck (Francis Howell Central) in a tiebreaker.

Danny's record for the season was 49-1. Last year, Danny finished sixth place. He made a late-season move from the 195lb weight class to 220.

Joe Terschluse became the first Chaminade golfer to win a state medal since Justin Bardgett in 2004. Joe finished his final state golf rounds with a 2-over par score of 146, winning by two shots. This was his eighth and final state round in four seasons. Last year, Joe finished twenty-seventh in the state. He will no longer be playing competitively, and is going out on top of the leaderboard.

Gray House Receives TASK's Award for Outstanding Community Service - Matthew Dailey, Director of Campus Ministry

haminade's service coordinator, Kevin Becvar, didn't realize what a great honor Chaminade was about to receive when he was contacted in January by Ms. Deb Fruend, the founder and executive director of Team Activities for Special Kids (TASK).

"She said that she wanted to come to Chaminade to make a presentation recognizing the Gray House's service work and she let me know how grateful TASK is for all of the service work that our students have done there over the past two years," said Becvar.

They decided that the presentation would occur after the March all-school first Friday Mass. During the presentation, the Chaminade Family was surprised and honored that Ms. Fruend awarded the Gray House with TASK's Community Service Award for 2016.

The Gray House first began its relationship with TASK in August 2015, when each of Chaminade's five houses partnered with a different St. Louis community service agency.

Houses partnered with nursing homes, organizations serving the poor and the sick, and, as described in TASK's mission statement, an agency that "enriches the lives of kids with special needs by providing athletic and social opportunities." Chaminade students have been volunteering at TASK for years. Playing team sports with kids who need a little extra help is a very fun way to earn service hours while giving back to the community. The house system began this partnering program because Chaminade wanted to intentionally educate our students about the diverse types of service in the community and our neighbors' differing needs.

The Gray House-TASK relationship was obvious from the start. Gray featured the TASK logo on their house competition shirts that academic year. Gray House Dean Mark Laury explains that "we wanted to give a visual sign of our house's commitment to service so that all of Chaminade knew we were embracing our partnership with TASK." Gray's seniors and faculty had separate service days at TASK

in the fall of 2015. Then, during an Esto Vir period, Ms. Fruend made a presentation for the entire Gray House in which she explained TASK's mission. Drew Shapiro '17 remembers that, "Ms. Fruend gave a great explanation of the agency and made it sound like a fun place to do service work." He recounted that she told the Gary House that the TASK kids love working with high school students because they look up to them so much. He found that to be true when he volunteered at TASK multiple times over the past two years. Since 2015, the Gray House has had several service days at TASK, and raised over $4,700 through mission collections. Dozens of their students have alo completed individual service work at TASK.

In addition to the Gray House's great work at TASK, other Chaminade groups have performed service work there, too. On both the Mother-Son and the Father-Son Service Days, we've sent volunteers to TASK, and, very impressively, Mr. Becvar and sixth grade teacher Keith Mug have started a weekly service program at TASK. TASK has sessions every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening at its facility in Fenton for its special kids to play sports, and Becvar and Mug brought students most Wednesday evenings to help. They would drive a school van, taking as many as fourteen students to do service work. In all, ninety-two students, representing all divisions, participated in the Wednesday evening program. Thirtyeight percent of participants went multiple times, and through the Wednesday evening program, Chaminade filled 173 volunteer spots, providing over 450 hours of service to TASK this school year. Mr. Mug said the Wednesday

program "met all of its objectives [insofar as] we were very successful getting student involvement from every grade level, and each trip to TASK provided and introduced many students to meaningful and rewarding service experiences."

Pedro Suarez-Solar '21 went with Mr. Mug's group several times, and said he "loves working with those kids." He enjoyed his work so much he plans to do his freshman service work this summer through Variety, an agency with a very similar mission.

Danny Sheehan '19 participated in the Wednesday program and found that "TASK was really good because it was really interactive." He went because all of the Gray House seniors recommended TASK to him, and he has chosen to complete his junior year social justice hours at TASK.

Brennan Boyette '18 went to TASK on fifteen to twenty different occasions this year, and enjoyed it so much that he'd like to get a job there for his senior year. He describes TASK as being "a very humbling place. It gives me perspective on how happy I can be seeing these other kids smile, and because I get to see how happy I can make them."

Chaminade's partnership with TASK has been mutually beneficial for these first two years, and we only hope that it will continue to grow. The Gray House showed great leadership in developing our relationship with TASK, and Mr. Mug and Mr. Becvar's Wednesday evening program has made it easier for more students to participate.

Teacher Mike Kelley debuted his third play, "Memory Café," in February at the Corner Playhouse in Mizzou's Fine Arts Annex. His first effort was an adaptation of Great Expectations, which was performed at Chaminade.

Over the Easter break, Chaminade's faculty attended the National Catholic Education Association conference. At that conference, Chaminade's president, Rev. Ralph Siefert, S.M., was presented with the Lead. Learn. Proclaim.

Award. This award is given to those in Catholic education who have demonstrated a strong Catholic educational philosophy as well as exceptional ability, dedication and results.

Out of the thousands of Catholic schools, over 150,000 teachers and administrators, diocesan leaders and organizations across the country, Fr. Ralph was one of just forty-one people or schools to receive this award.

His leadership over the course of his time as president has seen the expansion of McBride Hall, the construction of the Skip Viragh Center for the Arts, the installation of two turf fields, the beginning of the laptop program, the introduction of the House System and an increase of our Endowment to over $20 million.

Edward Garner '18 competed in the Missouri Percussive Arts Society's Day of Percussion on April 14, in Columbia, Missouri. Edward earned a third place award in both the keyboard mallet and snare drum categories for high school students playing "A" level literature.

Edward plays in the Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Band and Jazz Combo and is a member of the TriM Music Honor Society and the Band Leadership Group.

Justin Debus '17 and Jack Greene '17 were selected to play in the Mid-States Club Hockey Association's All Star Game on March 12 at the Webster Groves Ice Rink. Justin and Jack represented Chaminade well while playing for the MSCHA's South Team.

Cameron Nottingham '17 earned the highest possible ACT composite score of thirty-six. On average, less than one-tenth of one percent of students who take the ACT earn a thirty-six. In the U.S. high school graduating class of 2016, only 2,235 out of nearly 2.1 million graduates who took the ACT earned a composite score of thirty-six.

On May 7, at the National Football Foundation's 25th Annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet, Michael McGovern '17 was recognized for his athletic and academic accomplishments by receiving the Scholar-Athlete Award along with the chapter's Ray Cliff Highest GPA Award. These awards included $3,500 in scholarships for his education to Brown University.

Alex Stewart '18 received one of thirty-eight Distinguished Achievement Awards for Excellence in Science from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. This award recognizes the most outstanding junior level science students enrolled in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area high schools.

Miles Williams '17 received the 10th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Model of Justice Award on behalf of Chaminade. Miles was chosen for this prestigious award for his impressive service demonstrating love and concern for social justice for all of humankind.

The award was presented by Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson, Archbishop of the St. Louis Archdiocese, at a dinner event in January.

Michael Onder '18 was selected to participate in the 2017 Students and Teachers as Research Scientists (STARS) program at the University of Missouri - St. Louis. This program introduces both high school students and teachers to the various aspects of the scientific enterprise as practiced by successful scientists in academic, private and governmental research institutions.

Andrew Clarke '22 and Connor Williamson '22 are members of the St. Louis AAA Blues, the only AAA hockey team in Missouri and one of the top teams in the country.

Their team was selected to represent St. Louis in the "World Championship of Pee-Wee Hockey," the most important minor hockey tournament in the world, in Quebec, Canada, in March.

They played eight hockey games in eleven days against teams from Switzerland, Slovakia, Canada, and USA.

Honoree Highlights: • He preserves the Chaminade brotherhood and Family Spirit by helping to gather his classmates on the first Friday of each month for Mass at Pillar and breakfast at Schneithorst's.

• He has served on our Board of Trustees.

• He is a member of the Order of Chaminade and has been a generous and consistent donor since 1978, contributing to numerous scholarships and the Chaminade Fund.

• Through his position as Chairman of International Food Products, he was an original member of the Chaminade Corporate Champions and has continued the generous support of our Esto Vir Auction, the Fashion Show and two golf tournaments each year since 2014.

• He continued his Chaminade legacy with his two sons attending: Fred, Jr. '79 and Clayton '81; as well as three grandsons: Cameron '11, Hunter '14, and Parker '19.

• He and Carole Anne, his wife of nearly sixty years, have attended countless Chaminade events over the years as an alumnus, a trustee, a parent and a grandparent.

Honoree Highlights: • He has been teaching and coaching at Chaminade for twenty-five years and has served as a House Dean, worked in the resident dorm, and is a Chaminade Dad. • He has played an essential role in the development of Chaminade's relationship with Fr. Dempsey's Charities, and is unwavering in his commitment to serving the men who live there; exposing our students, and the entire Chaminade Family, to the diverse world around us through building authentic relationships with some of the more marginalized people in our society. With the support of the Alumni Mothers' Club and multiple mentor groups, David ensures that each resident at Fr. Dempsey's receives Christmas gifts.

• For the past sixteen years, David has led a Sharing and Caring effort to adopt ten to fifteen families in need at Christmas through the Kirkwood School District's Parents as Teachers program.

• For the past four years, David has volunteered with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as a member of the Xtreme Hike Committee, planning and leading a 30-mile hike on the Ozark Trail. In that time, these Xtreme hikes have raised more than $800,000 for the foundation.

Three students in the Class of 2017 have achieved the distinguished honor as a National Merit Finalist: Michael McGovern, Alec Pfeffer, and Justin Remelius. Only 16,000 students out of the 1.5 million PSAT test takers moved on in the National Merit Competition.

Peter Sheahan '82 of NAI DESCO and Mark Dorsey '05, who both serve on Chaminade's Alumni Board, have been named as 2016 Commercial Real Estate Heavy Hitters. Peter claimed awards for Largest Retail Lease and Largest Land Transaction. Mark, of The Maune Company, took home the award for Rookie of the Year.

Jack Boyle '86 is the president of merchandising for Fanatics and oversees all merchandising, including managing vendor relationships.

Recently, Fanatics, Under Armour, and Major League Baseball announced a ten year partnership. Beginning in the 2020 MLB season, Under Armour will be the exclusive MLB provider of all on-field uniform apparel for all thirty MLB Clubs. Fanatics will be granted broad consumer product licensing rights to manage the manufacturing and distribution of Under Armour and Fanatics fan gear, which include jerseys at retail, name & number products and Postseason apparel.

David Otto '89 has completed his Post Doctorate Diploma in Clinical Nutrition from the American Clinical Board of Nutrition.

T.J. Prebil '92 and his wife, Erinn, welcomed their son, Finn William, in December. Finn's big brother is Trey.

Joe Beilein '99 is a Penn State Behrend assistant professor and was recently seen helping actress Jessica Biel learn more about a Civil War ancestor in an episode of TLC's "Who Do You Think You Are." Joe is a specialist in Confederate warfare in Missouri and met Biel at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., in September.

Christopher Nohr '99 has been named as a Foreign Service Officer at the U.S. Department of State.

Blake Dell '03 was named to the 2017 Class of "40 Under 40" by the St. Louis Business Journal. Blake serves as the Director of Business Planning and Development at Mississippi Lime Company.

Prashu Sripal '06 married Tara Steffensmeier in May in Omaha, Nebraska, in a Catholic ceremony.

They also had a traditional Indian wedding in St. Louis in June.

Chris Bandi '08 was named to Entertainment Weekly's Breaking Big in Country: 5 New Artists to Hear Now list in early June.

Ryan Bauer '09 recently took his Simple Vows as a Consecrated Religious in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Fr. Patrick Hyde '04 was in attendance to witness the event. Ryan, now taking the name Brother Scotus Maria, played college soccer for four years, completed his Masters in Physics at Colorado State University and then followed his call to religious life in the fall of 2015, when he entered the Franciscan Friars Minor in Indiana.

He attributes Chaminade and Bro. Jim Eppy as some of the many influences he had in strengthening his Catholic Faith on his journey.

s the school year winds down, I hope that all of you have had the chance to come to campus for one of the many events that have taken place. 2016 -2017 was another great year for Chaminade. ur students, administration, teachers, and alumni have excelled in so many ways!

Chaminade has been a very busy place with numerous events happening on and around campus. Chaminade Alumni have been involved in many events, including the Fathers' Club Tree Lot, Trivia Night, the Esto Vir Auction, CABN, Ethics and Career Day, Chaminade Sports Hall of Fame, and other various events. I would like to thank all the volunteers that make these events possible. Our Alumni Association is blessed to have such dedicated individuals.

At the Blessed Chaminade Day Liturgy, Fr. Ralph presented two of the Alumni Associations honors - the Alumnus of the Year to Fred Brown '52, and the Alumni Humanitarian Award to David McCoy '86.

Our students have once again excelled in so many ways. The basketball team made it to the state semifinals but lost to a tough Lee's Summit West team, the hockey team had

another successful season, and Chaminade celebrated its first state champion in wrestling, Danny Conley. Baseball, volleyball, track, golf, and lacrosse teams all went far in district and state play. The fine art program continues its rich tradition with both the band program and theatre program putting on fine productions.

The drama department has staged several successful plays this year with "Macbeth," "Beauty and the Beast, Junior," "Sugar," and "To Kill a Mockingbird." The band has also been quite successful and numerous members recently earned high honors at the MSHAA Solo/Ensemble Contest at Mizzou.

We recently welcomed the Class of 2017 in to the Alumni Association. The Class of 2017 has exemplified Esto Vir during their years at Chaminade and many of these young men will be pursuing their academic interests this fall and attending some of our nation's finest schools. Many of them have received scholarships and awards for their achievements while at Chaminade. Welcome to the Alumni Association and we look forward to your involvement for many years to come.

On another note, I would like to give a special thanks to our good friend and director

of development, Jan Hamilton. Jan retired at the end of the school year and we wish her all the best and hope that she will enjoy her well-earned retirement. Jan has truly made Chaminade a better place and so many people have benefitted from her hard work and dedication to Chaminade.

Rob Standard '11 works for the Department of Justice Service and participated in the 30th Annual Guns 'N Hoses event to benefit BackStoppers.

The event was held in November at Scottrade Center. Rob won his bout.

Tom Rudawsky '15 accepted two high-profile summer internships. Beginning July 17, Tom will be working with the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League doing training camp operations. After that, beginning August 15, Tom heads to Huntsville, Texas, where he will be working in the recruiting department with the football program at Sam Houston State University.

Jack Terschluse '12 was hired by Lewis Rice for its ten-week Summer Associate Program in St. Louis. Jack is a first-year law student at Washington University School of Law.

Julian Mitchell '16 attends Michigan State University and was the only freshman to land an internship with the school's online newspaper, The State News. He is also on the broadcasting team and was on the field for the MSU/Ohio State game last fall.

Nate Kardesch '13 has been invited to serve in the Peace Corps for a two-year span starting in September. Nate will be working in Senegal as a Sustainable Agriculture Specialist.

Paul Eppy '15 recently accepted a summer internship with SportsNet New York, a regional sports network for the New York Mets.

Jayson Tatum '16 was a huge crowd favorite as he finished his high school career. He attended Duke University and finished his freshman season ranking fifth nationally in points per possession in isolation situations among major conference players. He announced in March that he would forgo further collegiate eligibility

Due to a canceled flight, Reilly Sheahan '17 was unable to make his high school graduation.

Reilly and his family were able to watch the live-stream of the ceremony on CSPN. The Sheahans were finally able to make it back to St. Louis in time for Senior Lock-In where Reilly was given his own personal graduation ceremony. This one was presided over by administrators Philip Rone and Peter Vlahutin.

Reilly's diploma was presented by his father, Peter Sheahan '82, the president of Alumni Board of Directors and a Lock-In chaperone.

haminade resident students have to create their own dorm life; every dormer has his own experience. Most of us learn quickly that we do not want to spend our time playing video games or sitting around doing nothing. My experience in the Chaminade dorm does not make me an expert, but I believe I can share some survival secrets.

The people I live with are great people; we have tons of fun. I love to spend my time in the weight room, in the TV room, the game room, or in the café together with my fellow dormmates talking about whatever is on our minds.

Dorm life is at its best when we are not in the dorm, (yes, it sounds weird). During those times away from the dorm, we get to see what St. Louis has to offer together with our dormmates. For example, we went to watch two Blues games this year; it was amazing because we were privileged to watch our team play while being with our good friends. We also went twice to play paintball, which is probably the most fun thing we have done yet.

Now, it might sound like dorm life is about hanging with the same people throughout the year, but that is not the case. We get to spend long breaks or weekends with American families, which is something I really enjoy, because I can experience how it is to be a proud American, get to eat good food, and do fun activities with the family.

We have many different activities every weekend in the dorm; most of the activities are off-campus, so the prefects will drive us there. The prefects are people that we love being around, they are like a parent, or an older brother/sister, and they make it feel like we are home.

Student Stories Seeing Double - Rhys Prosser '19

hroughout the modern age, twins have received several unfair and untrue stereotypes. Having the supernatural ability of telepathy, dressing exactly the same, and having the same personalities are just a few of the common misconceptions among twins.

Even the cinematic industry has added to this list of delusions with The Shining's horrifying portrayal of evil twins.

In reality, twins are normal people who just happen to have unique relationships with their counterparts. While roughly 3.3% of the world's population are twins, an astounding 7.5% of Chaminade's 2017 freshman class are twins (or triplets). These sets include Garret Willie and his sister Abigail, Connor and Dylan Parnas, Ethan and Blake Koutroubis, John and Adam Kuntz, Brecken and Tanner Wojciechowski, and Brendan, Cade, and Victoria Cunnane. All eleven of the Chaminade freshman twins have shared their personal perspectives on being a twin or a triplet in an attempt to correct society's false assumptions of them.

Like he does with most things in life, Gray House member Garrett Willie sees the positive aspects of being a twin. Concerning the matter, he says, "Ever since we were

little‌we were able to be together not just as family, but as friends." He and his twin sister, Abigail, attended the same school from Pre-k through eighth grade before splitting up for high school. Abigail attends Incarnate Word Academy where she plays soccer and is on the varsity cheer team. Like her brother, Abigail also enjoys the "right-brained" artistic side of life outside of school. While she paints in her free time, Garrett enjoys participating in Chaminade's theater and school choir. This optimistic and tenacious teen tries to focus on the best parts of being a twin but says it's hard not to notice its one downfall: the comparisons that come with being a twin. Garrett analyzes, "For me and my sister, we are interested in totally different things, but we each try to excel in whatever it is we do and we sometimes can't help but compare ourselves with each other."

Even though their competitive personalities sometimes grasp hold of their relationship, he appreciates that, through thick and thin, they will always remain "destined partners in crime."

Competitive athletes Dylan and Connor Parnas are constantly at each other's side as they play hockey, soccer, and lacrosse together.

The worst part of this, Connor says, is that the pair must go everywhere with each other

which sparks inevitable fighting. The difference between regular sibling rivalries and those between twins who participate in the same activities is that twins are often competing for the same team at the same level as they are the same age. Connor elaborates, "Being a twin is like having a copy of yourself at home which can be both good and bad. It is good because you always have someone to hang out with, but bad because being with the same person all the time can get very annoying." Dylan adds that, although the brothers are fraternal twins, people often confuse them with each other when they first meet.

Ethan Koutroubis says one of the positives of being a twin is that he never gets bored. He says, "we are either friends or enemies at all times," like most siblings. Whether the pair are playing baseball together or fighting, they spend most of time together. "One downside to being a twin," Blake points out, "is having to share everything."

This concept of amnesty towards sharing everything with their sibling seemed to be a common trend among the sets of twins. The bickering that occurs as a result of having to share things effectively breaks the common stereotype that "twins are best friends with each other." Although the Koutroubis twins may not always be the best of friends, Ethan reports that they are able to hang out and have a good time pretty often.

John Kuntz offers some great insight on the positives, negatives, and even the tips of being a twin. In John's opinion,

while it is nice to have someone his same age to hang out with at home, being compared to his brother, Adam, so often becomes a little taxing on his attitude. While the Kuntz twins both enjoy athletics, they play different sports from each other, unlike the Parnas brothers. John plays football and lacrosse while Adam plays soccer. John says that being a twin is extremely helpful when at family holiday gatherings.

These types of events, as anyone knows, can become exceedingly boring extremely fast. But, the Kuntz twins easily escape this epidemic as they always have someone to talk to. Adam's favorite part of being a twin is that when you can't remember what's for homework, you've got a classmate with you at almost all times at home to ask.

Brecken Wojciechowski truly appreciates the friendship that comes with being a twin.

He and his brother Tanner consider each other as friends and hang out constantly.

Brecken informs, "Being a twin is really cool.

It's like always having a friend around. The

best part is that you have someone to hang out with and the worst part is that you have to share everything." Brecken runs cross country in the fall and is currently playing lacrosse for Chaminade. Tanner plays tennis and enjoys playing Xbox. Although the brothers' competitiveness, most frequently shown through playing Xbox with each other, sometimes causes fighting between the two, the Wojciechowski's remain friends through it all.

Unassuming Brendan and Cade Cunnane play for Chaminade's varsity tennis team and are two of the best competitors on it. These fraternal but look-alike brothers are actually two of three Cunnane triplets as their sister Victoria attends Visitation Academy. Aside from tennis, Brendan plays golf on occasion and Cade participates in theater. Cade reports, "the best part about being a twin is that most of the time I am always doing something with my brother and I have someone in the family who has similar interests. The worst part for me is that I am always around my brother

and constantly being compared to him. It is interesting that when you really get to know us that we have very different personalities."

Brendan's favorite part about being a triplet is that, no matter how unfamiliar of a place he goes to, he will always have someone who he can talk to. Like some of the other sets of twins, the Cunnane's find annoyance in the constant comparisons that people make between them.

Cade's earlier comment about him and his brother having different personalities truly speaks volumes about the misconceptions of twins in today's world.

It's obvious that each set of twins (or triplets) is comprised of people who have unique personalities and talents. This is true for not only the large number of twins at Chaminade, but for all sets around the world.

There are evident and obvious positives and negatives to being a twin. But, for the most part, these Chaminade gentlemen are optimistic and see their rare sibling relationship as an opportunity for friendship.

Chaminade Giving C3 Sponsors exceed expectations

I

n only its third year, the Chaminade Corporate Champion (C3) program has exceeded expectations and generated substantial revenue for the four signature events held in the 2016-2017 year – the Alumni Golf Classic, the Mothers' Club Fashion Show, the Esto Vir Auction, and the Fathers' Club Chaminade Golf Tournament.

Chaminade's Advancement department designed the C3 program to maximize marketing exposure for corporate sponsors and to streamline the solicitation

process. C3 sponsors receive recognition at the four signature events described above.

The sponsors are assured of brand placement, recognition, complimentary tickets, etc. depending on the sponsorship level, and are then removed from multiple sponsorship requests from various Chaminaderelated individuals and/or groups. In 2016-2017, the C3 program generated $95K from thirteen Chaminade Corporate Champions.

Reilly '36 Remembers Chaminade in his Estate Plan

D

r. John V. Reilly '36 provided a generous bequest to Chaminade from his Revocable Trust. While a student, Dr. Reilly participated in sodality, orchestra, soccer, and football. He served during WWII, attached to the first Marine division and fought in the Solomon Islands. He then served in the U.S. Naval Dental Corps for twenty-five years.

Upon retirement from the Navy, he practiced dentistry in Florissant for twenty-five years. Dr. Reilly's sons, John '69 and David '73, are also Chaminade graduates. His financial gift will be used to advance our Marianist mission through academic and financial support to students.

Senior Reflection - Michael Gauvain '17

T

his past March, I had the honor of addressing the entire student body at the annual NHS and NJHS Induction Ceremony. Chaminade students are inducted into the National Honor Society and the National Junior Honor Society based on how they have exemplified the five core qualities of the Society: Scholarship, Service, Citizenship, Character, and Leadership. As part of the induction ceremony, I was asked to give a brief speech on the five core qualities and how I have seen them displayed throughout my time at Chaminade. I've adapted that speech here, and included a brief reflection on the process of giving that speech to my Chaminade classmates.

From the actual buildings themselves to the people inside of them, Chaminade is filled with character. Although it can be seen easily through the way in which we treat the people around us, I believe character is best judged by observing how we respond to adversity and disappointments; and what better way to do so than by looking at the Red Army? At the final game of every sport, the Red Army gives the famous "Thank You, Seniors" chant followed by a "We Are Chaminade." I've been fortunate enough to hear this chant at every Chaminade State Championship since I was born. I have also heard it in some of our most disappointing losses over the years. In both situations, however, the cheer is said loudly and proudly so that everyone in the gym or stadium can see that we are all men of great character.

Scholarship is usually seen as a reflection of just the students – after all, we are the ones who do spend hours studying and doing homework, so of course we deserve some of the credit. But there is a factor of academic success and scholarship that is commonly overlooked, and that is the teachers. I've seen teachers who come to school early and stay late in order to help their students, and I've seen many teachers whose passion and dedication to their subject inspires their students and

make them want to learn. In short, Chaminade is filled with incredible teachers that do much more for us than what we give them credit for, and who make our academic achievements possible.

A Canadian author by the name of Robin Sharma once said, "Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It's about impact, influence, and inspiration." It's easy to think of leaders as the ones with high-up positions or authority, but there's a big difference between being a boss and being a leader. A leader isn't someone who stands in front of a group and gives orders, but rather someone whose actions do what the quote talks about; they impact, influence, and inspire the people around him or her. From the day I walked in to Chaminade in sixth grade, it was clear that the school placed a high importance on developing leaders. In my years here, I've seen classmates transformed into leaders through the House System, sports, clubs, etc. Out of all the things I've learned at Chaminade, I am most grateful for the leadership skills that I've gained.

Chaminade students commonly think of service in terms of service hours; and while these are important, they don't capture the full idea of service. Whether it's to our community, school, or even just on an individual level, we experience service daily. One of the most valuable lessons that I've learned in my time at Chaminade is that our service will often be done without being thanked, that does not mean it isn't appreciated.

The final quality of membership, citizenship, is the most deceiving quality of the five – and let me explain why. When we come to Chaminade, we automatically become citizens of the school, making it seem like the easiest. However, being a good citizen – as opposed to just being one – is actually somewhat difficult. It requires us to have a strong foundation in the other four qualities.

One of Dr. Will Armon's most notable sayings is that we are all "Men of Power." We all have

endless opportunities given to us to become good citizens, and it is up to us to pursue them.

As great as his words sound, they would mean nothing if they weren't true. The Class of 2017 is a perfect example of the truth behind "Men of Power." From the fifteen guys who have signed their National Letters of Intent to play collegiate sports next year, to those who plan to be film producers, musicians, and doctors, and everything in between, our class is filled with guys who will be doing incredible things and going to incredible places in the coming years.

Each of us has recognized that we are "men of power" and that we can have an impact wherever it is we decide to go.

As I and the rest of my class move on to the next phase of our lives, there are a lot of emotions that come along with it. No matter how excited we are to be headed off to college, there is a part of all of us that is sad – and even somewhat scared – to leave behind Chaminade and the friendships that we've made here. At the same time, we find comfort knowing that the values and qualities instilled in us will make our journey much easier.

Michael Gauvain was selected as the Student Exemplar, an honor given to a senior member of the National Honor Society who is an example of excellence to members of the National Junior Honor Society.

Michael was also honored as the Esto Vir Award winner at graduation.
