Dear Chaminade Family,

2 | Esto Vir Magazine, Winter 2020

The first semester of this school year leads me to reflect on a single word that I think is reflective of that time-period. That word is INNOVATION. MerriamWester defines innovation as “the introduction of something new.” This word truly illustrates many of the wonderful things that are happening at Chaminade. This issue of Esto Vir Magazine will give you examples of innovation at Chaminade.

This is accomplished through emphasis on the FIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF CATHOLIC MARIANIST EDUCATION: - Educating for Formation in Faith

Mr. Brett Desnoyer was added to the Administration last summer as Associate Principal of Instruction and Mission. One of Brett’s first initiatives was to create a robust program for Professional Development for our faculty. You can read more about this innovative approach in this issue of Esto Vir Magazine.

- Providing an Integral, Quality Education - Educating in Family Spirit - Educating for Service, Justice and the Integrity of Creation - Educating for Adaptation and Change

Our orientation program for new students was adapted to ensure a welcoming environment and to focus on as seamless a transition as possible. The excitement was palpable. The boys seemed to enjoy it fully and it appears that they have transitioned very well. Sustainability initiatives continue to be at the forefront of our attention. Our planet and natural resources are finite and we realize that we must be good stewards of those gifts. We are in the process of applying for designation as a Missouri Green Ribbon School. A cross-functional team of faculty, staff and parents is working through the process to achieve this honor. The support of the entire Chaminade community has been exceptional.

ESTO VIR Magazine is published twice annually by the Advancement Office. Submissions are encouraged. Articles and information are edited and printed as space allows. Our PACE (Pathway to Access College Early) Program is consistently growing and evolving. Under the leadership of Dr. Stephanie Kralemann and Mrs. Teresa Wheeler, the program continues to grow. We can now proudly say that we offer more than 110 college credit courses – more than any other school in the region! These partnerships with Saint Louis University, University of Missouri-St. Louis and Missouri Baptist University are giving our students a huge head start to their post-secondary education while completing their coursework for a Chaminade diploma. You can read more about this program in this issue. These are just a couple of examples of the wonderful, innovative things happening here! Perhaps Blessed William Joseph Chaminade said it best when he said…“New times demand new methods.” We take those words to heart as we continue to look for ways to adapt and change to ensure the Esto Vir Journey of every young man provides for them to reach their full potential in every aspect of their lives. We are grateful to those that have entrusted Chaminade to partner with them during a significant time in their son’s life. We take that responsibility seriously and take great pride in watching them prosper.

CHRIST THE TEACHER

HISTORY OF WILLIAM CULLEN MCBRIDE HIGH SCHOOL In 1921, funds to build a Catholic high school in St. Louis, Missouri were given to the Archdiocese by Mrs. McBride as a memorial to her husband, William Cullen McBride, an outstanding Catholic layman. In the words of the late Cardinal Glennon, “Mr. McBride was a man who saw and understood the questions of his day, and even foresaw those of the future. He realized the need for educating the hearts and minds of youth so as to fit them for facing the problems of life.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST AND SCULPTOR After high school, Joe Aspell became a Marianist Teaching Brother for over 40 years. As a layman, Joe has dedicated his effort in bringing to fruition art commissions for churches, monasteries, and universities in the United States. Joe’s education includes an Undergraduate Degree in Literature from the University of Dayton, Ohio; a Graduate Degree in Art History from the University of

If you’ve been on Chaminade’s campus lately, you’ve likely noticed the newest addition – Christ the Teacher. This bronzed statue along with the renovation of the quad is a generous gift from McBride alumnus Joseph Nettemeyer ’69 and his wife Jane (Gudermuth) Nettemeyer.

Under the guidance of the Brothers of Mary, McBride opened in 1925. During its 47 years, McBride rose to become a landmark and a milestone in education. Situated on the northwest corner of Kingshighway and Cote Brilliante Avenue, this institution yearly molded and shaped the lives of 600 young men. Each year graduates were well prepared to meet their moral and civic responsibilities in an adult world. This generous gift provided an opportunity for 7,393 young men to graduate from McBride High School.

CCPLearning4all describes the effort of the Chaminade faculty to fulfill the gift of the Marianist Charism by developing a Marianist pedagogy—ways of learning, teaching, and collaborating which advance the vision of our Founder, Fr. William Joseph Chaminade.

At Chaminade, we have come to define our professional learning efforts as CCPLearning4all.

In the Summer 2019 edition of the Esto Vir magazine, Mr. Philip Rone, Chaminade Principal, introduced “Learning for All,” Chaminade’s professional learning initiative designed to fulfill his vision of transforming the school into a “total learning community.” In the ensuing months, Chaminade has implemented new structures and programs, empowering teachers to collaborate and work together to define and overcome the pedagogical challenges that each teacher encounters in her or his teaching vocation.

We know our Faith will lead to personal and institutional transformation; that Mary, our Mother, provides our model of faith and of strong, steadfast, and relational love; that it is Community which embodies “family spirit” and develops a sense of belonging; Inclusivity which enables the discipleship of equals; and Mission which inspires those who have received the Charism to proclaim the gospel and to become agents of change.

A CTI

At Chaminade College Preparatory School, our work is to realize the gift of the Marianist Charism in all facets of school life, and our methods are inspired by the pillars of the Marianist Charism—Faith, Mary, Community, Inclusivity, and Mission.

LEA D

Chaminade College Preparatory School’s Catholic, Marianist Professional Development Plan

The goals and logic of CCPLearning4all is to recognize and respect the professionalism of Chaminade teachers, and to offer opportunities for professional growth that are authentically connected to the day-to-day experiences of professional educators.

ATHLETICS AND

CCPLearning4all:

This community centered, team approach to professional learning is balanced by the development of the CITE—The Chaminade Institute for Teacher Enrichment—where teachers may work on their own through micro-credentialing courses on the school’s Learning Management System known as Canvas. Two courses have been developed to date: “Kung fu Canvas,” a course developed by Chaminade’s Instructional Technology Coordinator, Mrs. Hannah Gage, is focused on developing teacher knowledge of the instructional uses of Canvas; and a second course, “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Differentiation,” allows teachers to learn about, to plan, and to reflect on lessons differentiated to meet the needs of all student learners. This course was developed by Mrs. Gage, Mr. Tony DiSalvo—a Chaminade Learning Consultant—and Mr. Brett Desnoyer. These two courses have allowed teachers to develop their skills in the pursuit of our central instructional purpose—to foster student learning and faith formation.

We recognize at Chaminade that to prepare our students for success in school, in college, and in life that our vision is best accomplished through careful planning and strategic thinking. The We Are Chaminade Continuum to the right helps to illustrate the relationship between our vision for students—described as instructional, educational, and life outcomes—and the strategies designed for achieving that vision—the Chaminade Curriculum and our professional learning CCPLearning4all continuum. processes of collaborative professional learning. Chaminade teachers are not only working in academic departments to develop curriculum and learning outcomes but also collaborating in teams to present and receive feedback on teacher “problems of practice.” Affectionately known as POP teams, teachers work together to further student learning through disciplined, reflective, professional conversation. Interestingly, discoveries made in POP teams are beginning to find their way into teacher Grade-Level meetings, where teachers take turns sharing instructional discoveries and best practices.

When seeking to provide a quality, integral education, the Marianist educator promotes a quality education of the whole person—an education which seeks to develop the individual’s physical, psychological, intellectual, moral, social and creative qualities. Implementing such an education requires not only deep planning and vision, it also requires a spirit of family, of faith, of community, and,of course, of inclusivity. Chaminade educators are working and learning together to meet the unique needs and gifts of every student, dedicating ourselves to the mission of Mary, our Mother and our model of faith, who brought Christ into the world and told his followers to do “whatever he tells you.” Chaminade College Preparatory School is becoming more than a place of teaching; it is a place of faith dedicated to the discipline of learning—learning for all, students and teachers alike.

Because of Fr. Chaminade’s vision and courage, Chaminade College Preparatory continues to advance its mission by prudently discerning its instructional methods through

SPORTS UPDATE

athletics

The 2019 Chaminade football season has been one that the program has been building towards for years. With 19 seniors, many of whom have been in the program all four years at Chaminade, energy was high and expectations were even higher.

FOOTBALL

The Varsity team began its successful campaign long before the first game with a successful trip to Tennessee where they visited the campuses of both Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee (where the team finished 4-1 against some of the best competition in the Southeast in 7 on 7). In the regular season, the team finished the year with a District Championship, a quarterfinals appearance, and an overall 8-4 record with two of those losses coming from eventual state champions. Season highlight wins included a 44-0 shutout of conference rival Vianney, who had been a thorn in the program’s side for the past couple of years, as well as the team’s 7th consecutive victory over rival SLUH to keep the win streak alive. Additionally, the team won its featured game in the East St. Louis Gateway Scholars Classic 41-22 over Cahokia, marking the first time the program has won a game on that stage. Additionally, showing championship play doesn’t always translate to wins, the team played the only close game against undefeated Class 6 State Champion DeSmet this season losing 32-31 on an unsuccessful 2 point conversion going for the win. 10 | Esto Vir Magazine, Winter 2020

Driving back to St. Louis, the runners began to plan winter workouts and talk about goals for next season. It is clear that their commitment and heart will continue to ensure success for the Chaminade Cross Country Brotherhood.

The offense was led by senior QB and future Mizzou Tiger Brady Cook who shattered the school record he set last year for passing yards for a new record of 3194 yards for 33 TDs and only 7 INTs primarily passed to all-purpose monster RB/WR LJ Fortune for 817 yards and 7 TDs and sophomore Elijah Griffin for 750 yards and 8 TDs. Junior Amar Johnson amassed 1296 rushing yards and 13 TDs to lead the team in rushing. Defensively, the team recorded 2 shutouts including one in the district championship game, and held 5 of the leading rushers in the area to under 50 yards, becoming one of the most feared defenses in the state against the run game. Junior Jamisen Terry led the team in total tackles with 98 while Senior Jabin Johnson and Sophomore Nick Divis tied with a team high four interceptions and sophomore Grant Finley led the team with 6 sacks. The team had 8 1st team All-Conference selections, five on offense and three on defense. This season was one to remember with enough promising players returning next year to make another run at a state title. The 2019 Varsity Soccer Team enjoyed another terrific season with many highlights. For the first time in 17 years they went undefeated in MCC conference play with some exciting matches such as beating CBC in overtime and DeSmet in penalty kicks. As is the case each year, the team played arguably the hardest schedule in the country playing six nationally ranked teams from four different states. The players, coaches, and parents enjoyed a trip to North Carolina playing three quality opponents in three days while also finding time to visit UNC and Duke. Some of the players were even lucky enough to get inside Cameron Indoor Arena and walk out on Coach K Court!

SOCCER

The team battled through a series of injuries and ultimately fell short of their goal losing 2-1 in the district championship to DeSmet. While it will be difficult to replace the seniors on the team, the future looks bright as a good number of players return. The freshman and sophomore teams enjoyed a good deal of success with the B team finishing their season with a record of 19-4 and C Team finishing their season with a record of 18-3. Thank you to all the parents, alums, and players for all the support throughout the season, we will see you again next year in August!

The three-word mantra of the Chaminade Cross Country program is Commitment, Heart, and Brotherhood. These values were in abundance during the 2019 season, the team’s most successful campaign since winning a state championship in 2001. The tone was set early last May at the first-ever Leadership Retreat: three days of running, camping, and companionship in the Ozarks. There runners set several goals for the season, one of which was for the varsity team to qualify for Sectionals.

CROSS COUNTRY

The captains and other leaders of the team set out to accomplish their goals at the team’s kick-off camp in late July, with a record number of attendees. They recruited valuable new members into the program as the school year began. And each day at training they demonstrated the values of commitment and heart while fighting through late summer heat. They did all this while building a deep brotherhood among the runners. All levels had great success this season, but the varsity team was particularly outstanding. On the strength of junior Conrad Hogenkamp, the team accomplished their goal of qualifying for Sectionals. At Sectionals, Hogenkamp continued to impress, placing eighth, and qualifying for the State Meet. This was the first state qualifier the program has had in eleven years and the entire varsity team continued to train with Hogenkamp and traveled with him to Columbia, Missouri. Hogenkamp exceeded expectations at State, placing 42nd and setting a new PR by thirty seconds, running five kilometers in 16:18! He passed twenty-seven runners in the final kilometer and astounded spectators with his closing kick.

The Swimming and Diving team capped off an 14-1 dual meet record with a 4th place finish at the Class 1 State Championship Meet on November 14-15. The team finished on the podium for the first time since 2009. Six individuals qualified for the state meet and each individual on the state team scored points for the Red Devils. Senior captain Jeffrey Garlich was the top individual finisher placing second in the 50 freestyle. In fact, every individual performance was so phenomenal that the annual award for “Great at State” was awarded to all seven of the state competitors. Senior Andrew O’Brien finished fourth in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 100 backstroke, senior captain Ben Covington placed ninth in the 50 freestyle, senior Colin Fitzgerald placed 10th in the 100 fly and 14th in 100 backstroke, and freshman Josh Schultz placed 6th in the 200 IM and ninth in the 100 backstroke. Schultz was the only freshman to place in the top eight of any swimming events at the state meet. Adding to the teams point total was a tenth place finish by junior diver Joe Donlin. The team also finished second in state in all three relays breaking the school records in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. The Bro. John McCarthy Swimming Award was given awarded to senior captain Xavier Torres for his contributions to the team. Head coach Keith Mug received Coach of the Year honors from the Missouri Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association.

BENEFITS OF THE PROGRAM As Father Ralph announced in the summer Esto Vir Magazine, Dr. Stephanie Kralemann and Mrs. Teresa Wheeler are Educational Consultants for the expansion of the Pathway to Access College Early (PACE) Program. This program is a bridge to escalate the college education of a Chaminade student to a university through a robust Advanced College Credit (ACC) and Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum. The design of this program allows our students, simultaneously, to receive rigorous college-level coursework for both high school and college-level course credits. Over 75% of our students graduate from Chaminade with the equivalent of one to two years of college credit earned from over 100 semester ACC courses and/or 27 AP courses.

Benefits may include: • Offering students a head start on a graduate degree • Affording students an earlier transition into a master’s program • Allowing access to college credit courses at a significantly reduced cost • Providing flexibility to double major • Planning for a gap year Chaminade alumni, who graduated within the last five years, received a data survey about the transfer of their college credits earned while at Chaminade toward a university degree program. This data is essential in creating Transfer Guides for many of the colleges students plan to attend upon high school graduation. These guides will be valuable resources for Chaminade students as they select ACC and

you had a wonderful holiday season with those you love. Looking back on 2019, I am grateful and honored that the Alumni Association had the opportunity to participate in so many great events at Chaminade. The event that stands out the most to me is the dedication of the new Chaminade victory bell, a gift of the Class of 1969. While the tradition was not in place during my time at Chaminade, I am told that in the past Chaminade had a number of bells during different timeframes. The practice was that the victory bell would be rung after an athletic win. Sometime in the 1980s the bell disappeared. As the Class of 1969 gathered to plan their reunion, the idea surfaced to replace the bell and renew the tradition. On September 20, 2019, during the Celebrate Chaminade festivities, the Class of 1969 presented the new Victory Bell in front of a full crowd as the Chaminade Football Red Devils battled Vianney. The

Perhaps even more powerful than the amazing gift of the bell by the Class of 1969, was their commitment to ensuring the possibility of a Chaminade education for qualified students for years to come. I have been blessed to be part of the Chaminade Family since 1975. As a student, alumnus, volunteer, parent, board member, and current Chairman of the Board of Trustees; I am so thankful for everything Chaminade has done for me and my family. The Board of Trustees fully supports our president, Father Ralph Seifert, the school’s administration, the faculty, and staff. We are blessed to have this great team. I want to thank each of them for their passion for our students and their tireless effort. In my twelve plus years of serving on the Board, I have had the opportunity to see from behind the scenes why our institution continues to get better. It is not an accident. It is excellent leadership by Fr. Ralph and his team. It is a commitment by the entire team to get better every day. It is also commitment to a long-term vision and planning process.

22 | Esto Vir Magazine, Winter 2020

This year the Chaminade community will see the Chaminade 2020 Vision plan. It is Fr. Ralph’s vision of transforming Chaminade. It touches all aspects of our institution. The next phase will focus on our Global program with a new dormitory as well as our STEM program. It will also help build our endowment to ensure future generations will be able to attend Chaminade. My number one focus as your board’s chair is to help make Fr. Ralph’s vision a reality. It is an aggressive plan that will take the entire Chaminade community coming together to make a large investment to ensure that Chaminade is a world-class Marianist school for many generations. We will be reaching out to everyone to share the mission and ask for your help. Thank you on behalf of the entire Board of Trustees. JOHN F. EILERMANN, JR ’82 Chairman / CEO McBride Homes
