PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Chaminade Family, As I reflect on this past school year, I am again so grateful for all of the wonderful students we have the honor and responsibility of guiding to become the men the world needs them to be. We celebrate the 144 Seniors that graduated and will soon begin the next chapter of their lives at the collegiate level. We welcome the 145 rising Seniors that will be the leaders of the school for the 2019-20 school year. We cheer on the 140 rising Juniors as they embrace their role as upperclassmen. Our 147 rising Sophomores are encouraged to continue their growth. We welcome the 149 rising Freshmen that are just beginning their high school careers. Our 118 rising 8th graders are now the leaders of the middle school and we support their energy in this new role. We know that the 94 rising 7th graders will joyfully continue their growth here. We welcome our 72 rising 6th graders that are beginning their Esto Vir Journey at Chaminade. Looking forward to our next school year, I find the words of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade at the front of my mind. “New Times Demand New Methods” is a quote from Blessed Chaminade and is a consistent undertone of everything that we do here at Chaminade College Preparatory School. I find that to be especially true as we enter into our 109th year. Dr. Stephanie Kralemann moves to the role of consultant with an intense focus on our Pathway to Access College Early (PACE) program. Additionally, Mrs. Teresa Wheeler will be moving from the role of College Counselor to Consultant and will join Dr. Kralemann in growing our PACE program. I am grateful to both of them for their years of dedication to Chaminade and look forward to the progress they will initiate with the PACE program. I congratulate Mr. Brett Desnoyer and Ms. Beth Dunlap on their appointments to the administration. I trust that both of them will continue to help us ensure that we are progressive in our strategy and thinking. This summer, we also welcome Ms. Robyn Pilliod in the role of Director of Advancement. Robyn comes to us with a diverse background in fundraising. Perhaps one of the most exciting pieces of experience that Robyn has is that she helped to lead a successful capital campaign at St. Louis University High School. Robyn will have accountability for Major Gifts, Fundraising, Alumni Relations, Mothers’ Club, Fathers’ Club, Alumni Moms and Communications and Marketing. In other moves, Mrs. Dianne Dunning-Gill has left Chaminade to join her alma mater, St. Joseph’s Academy, as Director of Enrollment Management. We are grateful for Dianne’s commitment to Chaminade and wish her all the best in her new role! Erik Carretero, former Director of Admissions, has been promoted to the role of Director of Enrollment Management. I am confident that Erik will continue the amazing work of our Admissions team in this leadership role. Construction is underway on the renovation of our 2nd floor in Chaminade Hall which will include 2 active learning classrooms. These classrooms are being developed specifically for how boys learn best. Movement, flexibility and collaboration are at the forefront of this innovative design. You can read the exciting details in Mr. Rone’s article on page 4 and 5 of this issue of the Esto Vir Magazine. As you can see, it may be summer but there is lots going on at Chaminade. I pray you enjoy some rest, relaxation and family time this summer. I look forward to welcoming the students back in August as it’s simply not the same around here without them!

God Bless,

Rev. Ralph A. Siefert, S.M. President chaminade-stl.org | 3

PRINCIPAL’S LETTER

LEARNING FOR ALL

“New Times demand New Methods” (Blessed William Joseph Chaminade) Under the leadership of Fr. Ralph Siefert and in response to his call for educational innovation, Chaminade has grown into a significant learning community over the last thirty years. Chaminade is a different school today. In 1989 there was not an ISACS Self Study, a Diversity Director, a network, a House System, a one-to-one laptop program, block scheduling, Learning Consultants, a STEM program, a Global Reach Program, Instructional Technology Coordinator or a PACE program. These are just a few of the many innovations that have led Chaminade to be one of the top high schools in the St. Louis area. Innovation requires vision, nurturing and oversight. While our innovation has been robust over the past thirty years, the administrative structure of the school has not changed. The time for change is now. Father Chaminade said, “New times demand new methods.” This quotation has inspired generations of teachers and administrators at Chaminade to seek out contemporary approaches to ensure a strong and vibrant Marianist education for our learners. Twentyfirst century education demands that we address our student’s different learning styles and tackle specific skill sets. It is no longer one size fits all learners. The instruction must be differentiated to address multiple types of learners. Engaging and motivating students in changing educational environments and job markets demands a new approach in the classroom. In a world where learners are being pulled in multiple directions, it is paramount to address how they learn best. We need to prepare our students for jobs that do not yet exist. This demands that we address different skills in the classroom. The World Economic Forum in its 2022 Skills Outlook states that skills such as active leaning, learning strategies, analysis, creativity, technology design and programming, emotional intelligence, system analysis and problem-solving skills will need to be taught in our high school to prepare learners to thrive in the twenty-first century.

4 | Esto Vir Magazine, Summer 2019

Our teachers must become learners of how best to approach the teaching of these skills. We must not sit back and depend on the autonomous “sage on the stage” approach of the past. We are committed to addressing the changing needs of our students in our ever-changing world. In service of this commitment, Chaminade is initiating a new program called “Learning for All”. This program is in step with fulfilling our mission of preparing our young men to become the men the world needs them to be. This program will enrich our faculty professional development programs already in existence. The program will engage additional professional development designs which will include professional learning communities to enhance our approach toward a collective effort of best practices in the classroom. A number of administrative changes are being made to ensure the success of this new program while we maintain our exemplary leadership across the school. •

Dr. Stephanie Kralemann is moving to the role of consultant focused on the continued growth of our amazing PACE program. We look forward to the impact her dedicated focus and vision will offer our students as they prepare for college.

•

Mr. Brett Desnoyer will oversee and lead “Learning for All”. We have created this new administrative position. Mr. Desnoyer will be our new Associate Principal of Instruction and Mission. Mr. Desnoyer will be tasked with overseeing our faculty professional development programming and ensuring that all faculty have a clear understanding of Marianist pedagogy.

•

Miss Elizabeth Dunlap will assume the responsibilities of our Associate Principal of Curriculum and Assessment replacing Dr. Stephanie Kralemann. In her new role, Miss Dunlap will work with the other administrators and teachers to guide future curriculum development. She will oversee assessment of student learning to ensure we are meeting the needs of our learners.

We congratulate Dr. Kralemann, Mr. Desnoyer and Miss Dunlap on their administrative appointments. As a model high school, Chaminade needs to become a total learning community. Not just students, but faculty must also be lifetime learners. Professional Learning Communities among our faculty will be created to target the needs of our learners. Richard Dufour in his book, Professional Learning Communities at Work points out the characteristics of successful professional learning communities as follows: shared mission, collective inquiry, collaborative teams, action orientation and experimentation, continuous improvement and results orientations. Mr. Desnoyer will lead our faculty to ensure that these characteristics of Professional Learning Communities are met. Some of these characteristics are not new to Chaminade— we have always had a shared mission, continuous improvement, and collaborative teams. However, our new program “Learning for All” will provide heightened purpose and focus. Professional Learning Communities comprised of faculty will be created to interact with our existing subject departments and divisional (grade level) teams. Mr. Desnoyer will work with all teaching teams and mentor all new faculty members to ensure we are providing our learners with the best faculty. Our PLC groups will address challenges of teaching practices. They will work to understand and share how our learners learn best. They will bring these ideas to our other teaching teams, so they can view these best practices from the

perspective of both the grade level teams and subject matter teams. All these teams will form a circle, interacting to develop strategies that will best serve our learners in the classroom. We look forward to the new implementation of this initiative “Learning for All”. Mr. Desnoyer has created this graphic to illustrate his design for the new professional development program. We look forward to this exciting transition in our administration. Moreover, as we prepare for the upcoming school year, let us be reminded of the mission that Blessed Chaminade and the Marianists have placed before us: To teach as a means of educating in faith. PHILIP RONE Principal, Chaminade

A CHAMINADE INSTITUTION

STEPHANIE KRALEMANN

Have you ever considered that institutions can have institutions? As an institution, Chaminade has stood as the sentinel on the hill for one-hundred and nine years. Its stately presence stands as a reminder of the academic traditions it has upheld for more than a century. With this longevity comes wisdom, fortitude, and tradition. Its roots run deep. So too, are many of the people who have helped create and continue these foundational practices. One such individual is Dr. Stephanie Kralemann. If you pull up to Chaminade in the pre-dawn hours, you will see her sporty BMW convertible with the distinctive DR SAK license plates letting you know that Dr. K is in the house. Not only is her choice of vehicle distinctive, her manner of dress and style is both professional and appealing. Great care is taken in the selection of her wardrobe choices. Each piece and accessory is a deliberate decision. First impressions are important and Dr. Kralemann makes quite an impression. When Dr. Kralemann arrived at Chaminade 27 years ago, it was a very different place. Her first office was tucked into a small space between Fr. Ralph’s office 6 | Esto Vir Magazine, Summer 2019

and the elevator. The elevator might have been original as it still had the old accordion doors where you locked yourself in before pushing the button for your floor. When the time came to replace the elevator, the new shaft expanded to include the small space of Dr. Kralemann’s office. One of Dr. Kralemann’s favorite places during AP testing time, the faculty lounge in the back of Frische Hall, was originally the recreation room for the Marianist Brothers who lived in Frische. A community of Brothers numbering over a dozen lived in Frische until 1999. Many things have changed since the arrival of Dr. Kralemann. Waldron Hall stood where the Skip now stands. McBride Hall, which was not called McBride Hall yet, only went as far back as the pillar where the microwave sits and there were only six classrooms upstairs on the perimeter of the new wing as it was called with a gigantic storage space in the middle. The only tennis courts were what we now call the old tennis courts. Campus Ministry and the counseling offices were in each other’s spots. Where the middle school office now stands once stood a 55 seat lecture hall with tiered seating but that did not come into existence until after Dr. Kralemann arrived. All the plays were performed in Juergens and the bandroom was upstairs in Juergens. The third floor of Chaminade Hall was home to all middle school classes. The library was housed in the north end of the second floor of Chaminade Hall.

Though Dr. Kralemann has been at Chaminade a long time, there are eleven teachers still present at Chaminade who were here when she first arrived.

more to follow in short order. There must be some secret to being able to produce and deliver so many emails in such a short time.

Several years ago, the popularity of the Enneagram washed over Chaminade. The Enneagram is a personality test that establishes nine distinct personality types and with extraordinary precision reveals how persons think, act, and feel. Each of the nine personality types is associated with an animal totem. Dr. Kralemann fully embraced the Enneagram. Not surprising, she came out as a number one, the reformer, the rational, idealistic type. The foremost qualities of a number one are: principled, purposeful, self-controlled, and perfectionistic. Many of these traits are evident in Dr. Kralemann every

The Velvet Hammer. This is perhaps how students who have crossed her see her. She deals with students with a firm, yet loving hand. After helping students see the error of their ways, she will pray with them and for them. This strong prayer life is evident in everything she does. A devout woman with a strong faith and a true devotion to Mary, Dr. Kralemann possesses a genuine care for every student and teacher at Chaminade. In conversation with her, it is

day. And she can, after a short conversation with you, tell you where you would fall on the Enneagram scale. The animal totem of Dr. Kralemann is an eagle. While I would not like to challenge Dr. Kralemann or the Enneagram, I would respectfully disagree with the eagle as her animal totem. I believe her true animal totem is the ladybug. Perhaps you might not know, but she has a special affection for ladybugs. The ladybug boasts her two favorite colors, red and black. It is of course fortunate for her that red is our school color. (What would she do at Vianney?) These small bugs are mighty in the eyes of farmers, just as Dr. K. is might in the eyes of the students. Dressed to a tee every day, she is a small but mighty presence at Chaminade. While she holds many formal titles, Associate Principal for Academics, Self-Study Coordinator, and AP testing guru, she holds many informal titles as well. Queen of all exams and testing. Like the inspector with a white glove at inspection time, she inspects the troops on exam days seeing to it that everything is in order. Queen of the multiple emails. If you receive one email from her, chances are there are several

often difficult for her to contain her passion. Easily moved to tears, she readily wears her heart on her sleeve. But for anyone who has had a conversation of any length with her, time spent with her is time well spent. Have you ever noticed that our eighth grade students do not graduate from Chaminade? They simply transition to high school. Like our eighth grade students, Dr. Kralemann is not graduating nor retiring from Chaminade. She is simply transitioning. In her new role as consultant, she will be overseeing the PACE program and continue to be a visible presence on campus. After 27 years of service to Chaminade and 48 years as a Catholic Educator, she deserves to transition to this new role. This way she can continue to be an institution at the institution of Chaminade. Thank you for all you have done to make your mark on Chaminade. DR. DAN KARCHER English Department, Chaminade

VOLLEYBALL Back in Mid-October, Jimmy Mullen ‘19 made a prediction. During a live radio remote, he shared with all of St. Louis that Chaminade Volleyball will win state in the Spring. While the general public may have laughed it off, Jimmy was right! Volleyball went 28-6 for the season: 23-6 in the regular season. This is the best record that the team has ever had, we had the best MCC record the team has ever had, and they only lost one match in two sets (Mehlville: early regular season). They were also 5 for 5 in tournament wins: • • • • •

State Championship (Class 3) District Championship O’Fallon Township High School tournament Webster Groves Invitational Rockwood Summit Tournament

Owen Thomasson ‘19 broke the single season dig record with 494 and ended his season giving him a career total of 1,031 digs which is not quite a record, but was pretty close.

SPORTS RECAP Chaminade Volleyball won state!

Bryan Carter ‘19 had 274 kills – 3 away from a season record, but it is important to note that we had four other players with over 100 kills: Michael Jaeger (201), Phil Mullen (148), Mason Mooney (126), and Anthony Greer (102 – his first and only season playing volleyball!) Jimmy Mullen ‘19 had a single season assist record with 683, and he ended the season with a career record of 1,809 assists His younger brother, Phil Mullen ‘20, who plays as an outside hitter, actually stepped in as setter for one game when Jimmy was injured. During that game, he had a team record for a single match with 36 assists. IT WAS AN AMAZING YEAR!

FOOTBALL While many student athletes are still making summer plans and booking vacations, your Chaminade Red Devils have been hard at work for months preparing for what promises to be a season to remember. The offseason began with a tremendous showing at morning workouts that averaged 30 players per chaminade-stl.org | 15

morning three days a week. The players’ efforts were rewarded with 10 players reaching the 750 club (bench, squat, and power clean equaling 750 lbs) and three coming within a stone’s throw of 1000 lbs. Next the summer kicks off with the Red Devils’ summer program which includes a prestigious 7 on 7 schedule and trips to both Vanderbilt and the University of Tennessee. The season is one with high expectations as the football team returns 8 starters on each side of the ball including an offense headlined by senior QB Brady Cook and senior RB LJ Fortune alongside numerous passing weapons and a young but talented offensive front led by senior OL Julian McBride. McBride lends his talents to both sides of the ball as the team’s leading defensive lineman in front of senior linebackers Kevin Re and John Kuntz alongside the state’s top defensive back unit including seniors Jamisen Terry, Luc Nichols, Jabin Johnson, and Maurice Anthony who will stay well-rested with support from a continuing pipeline of talent at defensive back. The team will replay last year’s grueling schedule but has learned from the challenges of last season and expects to build on last year’s postseason momentum to make a serious run at a 2019 State Championship.

GOLF Freshman and JV Teams had a great season. Many matches won and the JV took the MCC Conference Tournament crown. The varsity squad again started its season with a trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama. There, they played three local teams and were able to get some much-needed practice. During the season, they claimed three tournament championships (Columbia Classic, Bulldog Battle, and Marianist Invitational) and took second 16 | Esto Vir Magazine, Summer 2019

place at the Webster Cup. In the post-season, the Red Devils won the District Tournament and battled for second place at sectionals to qualify for the state tournament at Silo Ridge in Bolivar, MO. At the state tournament, the team held it together on the first day to shoot a team score of 310. Junior Josh Heidenry and freshman Ryan Walsh led the team with 76s. On the second day, down by 6 strokes, the team mounted a charge and shot a tournament best 303, falling 2 strokes short of the championship. Heidenry and Walsh shot 73s and were awarded All-State honors with their third place finishes.

RACQUETBALL The Chaminade Varsity Racquetball Team had a great season, finishing 2nd at the state tournament, Chaminade’s best finish ever. Andrew Strand ‘19 is the state champion at the varsity #2 seed. Additionally, Andrew was voted as All-State First Team. Alec Growe ‘20 and Michael Jaeger ‘20 were All-State Second Team, while Shanu Sankara ‘19 and Patrick Lynch ‘19 were the All-State Honorable Mention doubles team. The second place Varsity Team: • Alec Growe ‘20 – 4th place at seed #1 • Andrew Strand ‘19 – state champion at seed #2 • Michael Jaeger ‘20 – 4th place at seed #3 • Brendan Mueller ‘20 – (seed #4) • Logan Miller ‘20 – 2nd place at seed #5 • Adam Pendleton ‘20 – 2nd place at seed #6 • Patrick Lynch ‘19 & Shanu Sankara ‘19 – 3rd place at doubles At the JV2 level the following players had excellent seasons and placed at the state tournament at their respective seeds. • • •

Kyle Johnson ‘21 – state champion at seed #2 Sam Chiburis ‘21 – 3rd place at seed #4 Mitch Gamma ‘21 – 3rd place at seed #5

SPORTS RECAP BASEBALL This year’s baseball season finished with a heartbreaking, extra inning, pitchers duel loss to Kirkwood high school 1-0. The game featured no walks, no errors, 5 hits for each team with Kirkwood coming up with the timely 2 out hit in extra innings. Senior pitcher Geoffrey Camfield kept us in the game with his stellar pitching performance. We certainly had chances to win the game but could not come up with that big hit we saw all season long. All we could ever ask when we play games is a chance to win and we had our chances. Baseball sometimes is a cruel sport but this year’s team held their heads high with class in defeat. What will be missed is the senior leadership of the class or 2019. This year’s team had 12 seniors, 3 of which were four year starters which included Teddy Phelan who missed almost all of the season with a broken hand, catcher Hunter Shaheen, and infielder Tyler Fogarty. We also had three year starters in pitchers Geoffrey Camfield and Luke Gilliam who also missed the season with shoulder issues. But one game does not tell the story of the incredible season we had in 2019. We finished with a record of 21-7 winning 11 in a row before the district loss. Along the way, we defeated 6 teams that would go on to win their district and 2 teams that made the final four in state. We played a difficult schedule with games against top teams in the area that included wins against Vianney, CBC, Lafayette, Marquette, SLUH, Lutheran South, and DeSmet. After losing our first four league games we finished hot with four wins over league opponents to finish third in the competitive MCC.

The season started out with a trip to Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach Florida. We spent 6 days in Florida playing against teams from around the country with a game vs fellow Marianist school Chaminade Madonna that was cancelled because of rain. We broke out our “old school” light blue uniforms similar to those the Cardinals wore back in the day that they now wear as an alternate jersey. We enjoyed some time on the beach away from baseball along with enjoying each other’s company.

We also drove down to Jupiter to watch our hometown Cardinals play a spring training game. We tailgated with friends and families showing how “family spirit” travels everywhere even when we are far away from home.

The highlight of the spring training game was getting to hang out and listen to Cardinal pitcher Adam Wainwright. Adam shared his life experiences and stories with the players expressing how all of us can do well in serving others while trying to help those less fortunate than us. Adam braved the rain while hiding under a tree for 20 minutes talking to the boys and answering all of their questions. Adam truly is an inspiring person and a great role model for others to follow on how to do things right!

The good times, the jokes, the trip to Florida, the bonding, the plane ride, the friendships of both families and friends, the support from classmates, these are the memories that will last a lifetime. Soon to be seniors Nathan Case, Matthew Botta, Cam Hill, RJ Radil, Sean Thill along with juniors to be Jack Weber and Carson Glynn will have big shoes to fill. The graduating class of 2019 has left a standard for future Red Devils to follow that if those future generations can meet, we will be in good shape for years to come.

ALUMNI NOTES

2019 Alumni Humanitarian Award DANNY KERTH '11

Danny's experience with the suicides of three people so close to him, and his awareness of the spiraling mental health crisis in our country, led him to say, "Enough is enough!" He refused to be intimidated by the darkness and hopelessness that can control lives and chose, instead, to engage in the goodness of life. In 2014, Danny and a group of friends started Project Wake Up, a non-profit organization aimed at raising awareness of the growing suicide epidemic. Their goal is to destigmatize mental illness and to start a dialog so that people feel more comfortable reaching out for help. They shot a makeshift video with their phones and raised nearly $10,000 overnight and $25,000 in a month, with the long-term goal of producing a documentary film with the intent to help end the stigma surrounding mental illness.

The Alumni Association Board of Directors established the Alumni Humanitarian Award in 2001. This award is given every other year to an alumnus who has given exceptional service to better his community and provides undaunted support and commitment to a charitable organization. This year’s recipient was Danny Kerth, a member of the Class of 2011. When Danny was in fourth grade, he lost his dad, who suffered from bipolar disorder for much of his life, to suicide. Danny was only nine years old and too young to know how to deal with such a traumatic event. A similar tragedy struck again during Danny's freshman year at Mizzou, when his friend, Carolyn, took her own life. Then in 2014, his friend, Ryan, took his own life just two weeks shy of his 21st birthday.

24 | Esto Vir Magazine, Summer 2019

During the course of filming, Danny and his friends talked to legislators as well as the families who lost loved ones, in order to expose the inadequacies in mental health funding, treatment, and public perception. When the film is finished, they plan to show it at schools around the nation as part of mental health awareness events, and will distribute it to as many people as possible. Shortly after the idea for the documentary was formed, Danny and his friends established a student organization at the University of Missouri: the Missouri Student Suicide Prevention Coalition (MSSPC) and now plan to install “Wake Up Chapters” on campuses nationwide. Danny is a model of Esto Vir to the Chaminade family, and embodies the principles of the Gospels, the Church, and the Society of Mary that we value so much as a school community. As Chaminade's 2019 Alumni Humanitarian, Danny is our youngest Alumni Humanitarian to date.

ALUMNI NOTES

2019 Chaminade Alumnus of the Year PETER SHEAHAN '82 The Alumni Association Board of Directors has the responsibility of reviewing candidates for Chaminade's Alumnus of the Year Award. To achieve this most distinguished honor, the honoree must have given his time, skills and/or resources to his alma mater; he must have been involved in school and/or alumni activities; he must have given of himself to his community outside of Chaminade; and he must have exemplified the spirit of Esto Vir in his daily life. Peter Sheahan '82 entered Chaminade as a 7th grader in 1976 and has demonstrated his loyalty and commitment to his alma mater for more than 40 years. Among other things: • As a student, he was a four-sport athlete playing Hockey and Football, and running for our Cross Country and Track teams. As a senior, he was named Athlete of the Class. • He was Co-Captain of the back-to-back Frozen Four Red Devil Hockey team - a team with an astounding 17 victories compared to just two when he was a freshman. He was an integral part of that improvement and even coached the team from 1989-91 with a cumulative record of 29-14-2. • He owned the fastest 2-mile time for nearly 20 years and was the highest placing Chaminade Cross Country runner at the State meet – a record he also held for 20 years – placing first in all but one meet during his senior year. • The summer after his freshman year, he was involved in an automobile accident that nearly took his life. Rather than withdraw from the challenges of life, he chose to deepen his relationship with God.

Perhaps his greatest achievement during that time is the renovation of the Alumni Room and the installation of the Hall of Fame trophy cases in Chaminade Hall last summer. • He served on our Board of Trustees from 1992-2007 and is currently back on the Board for a second time. • He can be seen at countless Chaminade events, including the Esto Vir Auction, where he has worn his loudest Mardi Gras suit for the evening. He has also been a continuous supporter of the Alumni Golf Classic and Trivia Night. • In appreciation for his service and dedication to Chaminade, the Fathers' Club recognized him with the Bro. Fred Weisbruch Award in 2017, when his son, Reilly, was a senior. • Speaking of family, his Chaminade ties began with his father, Tim '51, who received this very same award in 2006. Continuing with his brother, Marty '80, he has helped to sustain the Sheahan legacy at Chaminade into a third generation by way of his two sons attending – Reilly '17 and Marty '19, who was the 13th Sheahan to graduate from Chaminade. • He has been a generous and consistent donor since the early 1990s, contributing to the Class of 1982 Scholarship, the Chaminade Fund and numerous other endeavors. • Off campus, in his professional world, he has been named as a Commercial Real Estate Heavy Hitter by the St. Louis Business Journal several times, and was inducted into the Midwest Real Estate Magazine Hall of Fame in 2018. • He has served on the Boards of ACCESS Academies, the St. Louis Sports Commission and Our Lady of the Pillar Men's Club. • He has enriched the lives of countless young people by serving as a Webster Youth Hockey coach, a CYC soccer coach at Pillar for 17 years, as well as coaching track and baseball.

His dedication and spirit of Esto Vir challenge all of us in the Chaminade family to become the best we can be. His deep sense of loyalty to Chaminade is to be commended. He has truly lived our Chaminade mission to the fullest and has continued paying it forward to the benefit of others in the Chaminade community. He has done so in the most humble spirit, never seeking acknowledgement or accolades for all that he does for Chaminade.

• He has served on the Hockey board for more than 25 years and as a member of the Lacrosse board since 2012. • He has served on our Alumni Board of Directors for nearly ten years, including terms as President and Past President.

ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT 2018-2019

As the school year draws to an end, the enrollment management office is once again exhausted yet grateful for another successful year. We have enrolled one of the larger sixth grade classes in many years, comprised of 19 siblings and 13 alumni sons. There are also many more cousins and nephews! It is wonderful to see the Chaminade tradition continue with so many families! Chaminade’s seventh and eighth grades will again be large, with our eighth grade having moved to a wait pool. There is no question that the quality of the middle school experience continues to attract families from around the St. Louis area to our school. Chaminade’s high school will again be close to 600 students, with all four classes having enrollments in the 140’s. It has been a commitment of the administration to keep Chaminade’s average class size at 17, and while we could be larger, we’ve been strategic in maintaining our high school enrollment. The incoming freshmen class represents students from around the St. Louis metro, into

26 | Esto Vir Magazine, Summer 2019

Illinois and St. Charles county- 29 different zip codes! They are also a very bright group of students, with over $60,000 in academic scholarships being awarded. The Resident Program enjoyed a year of great student diversity – students in grades 7-12 from 13 different countries. Despite all the challenges in attracting international students, Chaminade has continued our tradition of maintaining a vibrant Resident Program. These students participated on teams, clubs, bands and in our school musicals. All of our Chaminade students benefit from our Resident Program, and we are committed to continue to enroll excellent students from around the globe. A highlight of the Enrollment Management Office this year was our Parent Ambassador Program, in which Chaminade parents assisted our office with tours, making follow up calls to families that have visited, and hosting events for prospective students. There is no greater marketing tool in the world than our amazing parents! Our Parent Ambassadors have proven to be a great resource for prospective families and have made our interactions with potential students impactful. Thank you to the Parent Ambassadors!

This year we started a “Reaching Boys, Teaching Boys” speaker series that we hosted around the St. Louis area. The program was developed by Mr. John Hale ‘03, our Middle School English Teacher, highlighting the research and methodologies in how young men learn best and how Chaminade has implemented these strategies in our classrooms. These were extremely well received, and highlighted the incredible work our teachers do every day to engage our students. Lastly, we have had a number of changes in our team in the past few months. Dianne Dunning-Gill has left Chaminade to take on the role of Director of Enrollment Management at her alma mater, St. Joseph’s Academy. Erik Carretero, former Director of Admissions, has been promoted to the role of Director of Enrollment Erik Carretero Management.

Jana Allen, Admission Associate, has retired to focus on her family. We welcome Jen Feise, mom of Jake ‘21 and Zach ‘23, as our new Admissions Associate. We look forward to an exciting and fruitful year!

Jana Allen and her family: Husband Dan, Son Cam ‘18 and Daughter Kendall.
