October Edition
Theology
Mr. Slattery
rslattery@chaminade-stl.org We’re half-way through our Unit on the Covenants of Moses and David, then we’ll be in the New Testament for the rest of the year. We’ll be looking at a test in about 2 weeks. A practice test will be made available next week. We’re currently finishing up a Video Project on a Saint after having a discussion on role models. Good News! There were so many responses from students looking up to their parents!
Social Studies
Mr. Chiburis
cchiburis@chaminade-stl.org Next week we will have our 2nd “test” on CH. 2-3, climates and natural disasters. We will follow the same format as the last test with an essay comparing/contrasting Mt. St. Helens and the super-volcano in Yellowstone, a few short answer questions, and then traditional test questions. We will then start the United States just in time for the election!
English
Mr. Hanock
jhanock@chaminade-stl.org In English we are continuing to read The Hobbit and research different types of heroes and the Hero’s Journey. We are also entering Unit 3 in our vocabulary books and the students are expected to be studying a bit every night to ensure they understand and know the words for when we take quizzes on the units. The creative writing unit is moving along quickly as the students continue to learn how to plan and outline for a short story by developing characters and subplots. Lastly, the first round of book reports are due this month on October 23. The students are expected to have read their chosen books and written a four-paragraph essay using the outline found on Canvas. Please email me and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Math
Mrs. Perlow
dperlow@chaminade-stl.org Math classes are going very well so far. I am very proud of their attention, work, and cooperation. Please remember that good daily work is the key to success. Don’t wait to get help; get it right away. Where to get math help: Ms. Perlow is available before or after school. Mr. Winebright or Mr. McCoy is available after school in the 6th grade STAR room, MS 6.
Science
Mr. Pendleton
tpendleton@chaminade-stl.org We have finished the musculoskeletal system unit and have learned some new ways to study for bigger, more challenging tests. We are now studying the nervous system.
French
Mrs. Dalton
cdalton@chaminade-stl.org Bonjour! We have just finished Unit 1, leçon A in French class. These first 6 weeks in French class were dedicated to teaching the students how to use the resources and submitting work while having fun learning a new language. The boys have played Bingo using French numbers 0-60. They can identify gendered nouns of a few people, school-related nouns, and places. They now know more about articles (which will also help them in English). We also used the CODES that you received with your textbook to access the online resources. VHLCENTRAL.COM is the website your son can use to access a copy of the textbook digitally. This access will be good for 3 years! We have a test next week. We will be reviewing in class, but I have published the study guide and lessons to review under the COURSE RESOURCE tab on my French class homepage. I’m very impressed with the enthusiasm and work-ethic of your children! Bravo! There will be French tutoring available to all CCP students. These are our National French Honor Society students at the High School. Here is the information for you (also located in the COURSE RESOURCE tab: French Tutoring: Virtual Tutoring is every Tuesday from 7-8pm this semester (except the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break). Students must sign up in advance by filling out the form. (It may take 30 min. for the form to populate the calendar…that’s why they need to sign up in advance…and to give the tutors a heads up.) Spanish
Mrs. Galvan
mgalvan@chaminade-stl.org The seventh grade students have been very impressive, finishing up the first few chapters (Lec. 1A-1B). They will be starting their next chapter (Lec. 1C). We are continuing to read and write stories in the present tense. The verb ser ("is/am/are") will be introduced where we will discuss people and their characteristics in Spanish. Continue to check my home page on Canvas for each day's lesson. The Course Resources button on my home page will allow them access to current teaching videos of the chapter.
Chinese
Mrs. Chien
wchien@chaminade-stl.org We have a great start and these young men have already known 7 Chinese characters (know how to write and use them) + Chinese numbers from 0-99. They are hard-working and very respectful in class. October is all about food: what is tasty and what is not (hǎo chī) and where to get the food that we want. This lesson will follow up with a new story called “Giuseppe” and they will know how frustrating it can be when we cannot get what we want! There will be more characters to learn!!! October 1 is Chinese Moon Festival, so we will talk about Chinese culture and try some moon cake. I am also planning for Chinese lunch with the students. I will follow up with more information and hope to have your support.

Mr. Makarewicz
jmakarewicz@chaminade-stl.org About a week ago, we began working in the textbook. Please make sure students have a textbook with their name in it. It will be their textbook for the next three years. We have also created our first class character, Lagona, a giant baby fish who works at McDonalds, and will soon be creating a story about him.

Attached is our October Monthly Planner if this is something you and your son have found helpful or would like to start using. If you have any follow up questions, please feel free to reach out! We understand that a very difficult part of this school year is the lack of social interactions your boys are getting at school. Because of this, we have gone into your son's Theology classes to do a Building Connections activity. The idea behind this was to give them time outside of classroom, connect with new kids in their class and have fun. Our goal is to continue to provide these types of experiences so the boys can safely connect with their classmates!
