Dear Summer Musical Theatre Patrons,
Welcome to our delightful world under the sea, full of magic, mischief, friendship, family, and love.
Isn’t it amazing how Hans Christian Andersen’s dark, tragic fairy tale The Little Mermaid first published in 1837 has been adapted into one of Disney’s most beloved animated films and ultimately even… the musical you are all watching today in 2026 with, of course a much more uplifting ending! I have always loved fairy tales, no matter how dark, but I would say as an artist my specialty lies in finding the light in the dark, the hope in the journey. And I am an avid Disney fan, as well.
Our Little Mermaid wants to be part of a world that’s different than her own but is unable to communicate her needs. She feels powerless until she finds her strength when she sees her father’s act of love through self-sacrifice and learns there is power in relying on those who love her. Love is what she wants, and love is what will ultimately save her.
This Summer Musical Theatre Intensive comes together for eleven days, then holds two dress rehearsals and we open a show. Playing theatre games, learning to share a story, making choices in acting together, singing, dancing, staging, trusting each other as everyone’s gifts are brought together to craft a beautiful story while building community. I love watching the growth in summer! What an amazing process! It is truly inspiring to see how this magic comes together and how thirty-five individuals who awkwardly spent day one of this Intensive getting to know each other's likes on Monday, June 8 th have now become a truly special Little Mermaid family. The beauty of theatre is that it is absolute a team sport and like our Little Mermaid, you may enter feeling alone, but you end up with a community that loves and accepts you no matter what.
Thank you to our incredibly dedicated, hardworking Chaminade Players Summer Crew, our amazing creative team, wonderful staff, and fabulous drama mamas for everything they do to help make the magic happen!
And thank you, families and audiences for your support of live theatre and youth theatre programs!
Enjoy being part of our world!
Yours in the arts,
Yvette L. Bishop Director of Theatre Program Chaminade College Preparatory High School
