CHAMINADE WELCOMES NEW HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL MR. LUIS GUERRA

On March 13, Chaminade announced the appointment of Mr. Luis Guerra as the next high school principal. Former principal, Bro. Tom Fahy, announced his retirement in September 2019 after 18 years of tremendous service to our school, for which we are truly grateful. Under the leadership of Human Resources Director Donna Voogt, Chaminade enlisted the firm Educational Directions to assist with a nationwide search and internal search committee then interviewed a talented pool of candidates.

Luis possesses the qualifications and characteristics to lead and serve our high school capably. As a 15-year Marianist Educator and a Marianist Lay Affiliate, he is a committed Catholic with a deep respect for the Marianist philosophy. He will uphold Chaminade’s proud tradition of mission-centered education, and advance our high school campus into the future. Luis assumed his role as high school principal on July 1, 2020.

“Receiving the call to serve this incredible educational community as principal was indeed a humbling experience. Like Jesus’ Mother, Mary, I said “yes” to serving this community because I have deep love and respect for it,” says Luis. “ The opportunity to, as Br. Stephen Glodek, SM, stated, ‘establish a culture a home, a place where Marianist family spirit can flourish in the educational community…’ is a dream come true. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve and give back to Chaminade.”

Luis has served as the high school dean of students since 2016. In the summers of 2018 and 2019, he oversaw West Hills site operations of the Center for Excellence. Between 2014 and 2016, Luis was the assistant director of campus ministry, while serving as chair of the Mission Integration Team, which liaisons with the Marianist Province.

Prior to Chaminade, Luis taught at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio, Texas. There, he also served as coordinator of the Malawi Service Immersion Program, traveling with students on service-learning trips. Additionally, he has taught at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School in Cleveland, Ohio, and Purcell Marian Catholic High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Luis was also the regional coordinator for the Marianist LIFE South Program.

Luis is in his second year pursuing a doctorate with a concentration in Catholic educational leadership from Creighton University. A product of Marianist higher education, he holds a master’s degree from the University of Dayton and a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas.

RISING UP TO THE CHALLENGE

This past spring, with the pandemic growing in our country and across the globe, I witnessed the strength of our Chaminade family as we adapted to a new educational environment. I am proud of how our faculty and staff, much like Father Chaminade, demonstrated fortitude during difficult times by quickly providing distance learning to ensure the health and safety of our students and families. We rose to the challenge before us by continuing to foster and nurture our family spirit through our first virtual Gala, livestreamed prayer services and Masses, online rallies and social events, as well as a drive-through culmination event and online graduation for our high school seniors and middle school eighth graders. I invite you to read this issue of Chaminade Now and visit the video library on our website to see how our traditional Nade events and activities were reimagined. This issue also allows us to thank the donors, parents, alumni, and friends who are helping us through these challenging times with philanthropic support, volunteerism, and dedication to our school, and those who are serving our community as frontline and essential workers.

In this issue, you can read about our new Academic Resource Center at the high school created to assist our students who can use more help with their studies, as well as our Challenge Success initiative that provides a systematic approach to supporting the mental health and well-being of all our students.

I witnessed the strength of our Chaminade family as we adapted to a new educational environment. I am proud of how our faculty and staff, much like Father Chaminade, demonstrated fortitude during difficult times.

We certainly miss the joy that comes with being on campus – seeing students in the classrooms, gathering in the hallways, competing on the Deep Blue C, creating and entertaining in the Tutor Performing Arts Center, and celebrating in the DeLong Center and Uribe Center. As such, we are preparing and taking the necessary precautions to be able to provide the Chaminade experience to all our students this school year. To ensure the safety and well-being of our students, families, and employees, I have emboldened a Return-to-School Task Force that worked through the summer on our plans to return to campus. We know it won’t be perfect as we must continuously adjust to changing public health guidelines and directives; however, our students and families have the steadfast commitment of our board of directors, executive council, and faculty and staff to provide the Chaminade experience to the fullest extent possible.

In response to this summer’s nationwide call for communities and institutions to address and confront racism, we are making meaningful strides to improve our approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Guided by the Characteristics of Marianist Education, which emphasize service, justice, and peace as well as adaptation and change, we are working to ensure that Chaminade is an inclusive environment where all students, families, alumni, and employees feel like they belong. We assembled a committee to lead this important effort and develop immediate and longterm strategic objectives and plans in this regard. Additionally, we have partnered with nationallyrenowned researcher Dr. Paul Gorski and his Equity Literacy Institute. Dr. Gorski has 20 years of experience helping educators strengthen their equity efforts in classrooms, schools, and districts. As an initial part of our ongoing work with him, Dr. Gorski presented a workshop on the topic of equity literacy at our all-employee meeting in early August. We know that this work will take the entire Chaminade community to achieve real change, so I encourage you to stay connected with us as we share our progress during the school year. We are fully committed to the hard work ahead and are resolved to move forward together.

I thank you for being an integral part of our Chaminade family and for your commitment to our mission to inspire young people to love, learn, and lead through our Catholic and Marianist traditions of a living faith, academic excellence, and moral responsibility. We hope you enjoy this issue!

A PARTNERSHIP WITH CHAMINADE

“New times demand new methods.”

Fr. Chaminade often expressed these insightful words when addressing his early followers and teachers-in-training, and his words perfectly embrace the 2019-2020 school-wide Characteristic of Marianist Education – Educate for Adaptation and Change – upheld as the theme for the year. Especially today, in a world filled with many uncertainties and fears, his words resonate with relevance and vision.

How timely for the Chaminade VicePresident of Mission and Strategic Initiatives, Brother Adam Becerra, fsp, DMin, to heed Fr. Chaminade’s wisdom by exploring a partnership with Challenge Success, a non-profit organization that seeks to help schools improve the wellness for all of their constituents. Affiliated with the Stanford University Graduate School of Education, the program has serviced over 180 high schools and middle schools with a year-long program promoting change for the better (Challenge Success School Program).

According to Brother Adam, “The primary mission of Challenge Success is to create opportunities and develop

strategies to improve student well-being and engagement with learning.”

With an important action item on the Chaminade Strategic Plan addressing the need for an improved Wellness Program for students and also for families and staff, Becerra found Challenge Success. Chaminade needs to take action to better serve the mental health of its community, and Challenge Success is a dynamic step to make this happen. With so many external and internal stressors on students today, students are experiencing a host of potentially dangerous symptoms, and

Chaminade has the resources to help alleviate these problems. Over the past few years, counselors and teachers have seen a dramatic increase in such areas as depression, anxiety, lack of sleep, and over-scheduling, and the larger society has also experienced a rise in suicidal ideation. Director of Guidance, Laura Cuneo, shares that “Kids cannot escape the societal pressure, and we cannot ignore it. With an ever-changing student demographic and as a college prep school, Chaminade straddles a fine line: we need to both challenge our students while not overstressing them, and we need to meet them as individuals where they are in the moment. The Challenge Success program will aid us in discernment and follow-through with a focus on each student’s individual success – however his or her path looks.”

The year-long Challenge Success Program is a rigorous one, including an initial Leadership Conference to introduce a school to the program. In the summer of 2019, a high school team including Principal Brother Tom Fahy; Brother Adam; Vice-Principals, Lisa Magorien and Jennifer Poole; and Math Department Chair, Monica Halverson, traveled to Stanford University, and they were impressed with their experience. Chaminade engaged Challenge Success as a partner, and a team of ten from the

high school and middle school will attend two conferences at Stanford, hopefully this fall and next spring. Thus far, Brother Adam, Laura Cuneo, high school therapist Kathryn Howard, and Vice-Principal Lisa Magorien are scheduled to attend as is Director of Guidance, Heather Eaton, from the middle school. Other attendees including a student and parent are still to-be-determined.

Providing schools a framework with the acronym S.P.A.C.E., Challenge Success taps into all aspects of student life and wellness. The “S” stands for Students’ Schedule; the “P” for Project and Problem-Based Learning; the “A” for Alternative and Authentic Assessment, the “C” for Climate of Care; and the “E” for Education for the Whole Community (Challenge Success Overview). Featuring student, parent, and teacher surveys as part of an extensive, data-driven dashboard, Challenge Success analyzes findings with the school team during the fall conference to determine needed improvments from possible changes in the bell schedule to consistently implementing best practices to time spent doing homework to addressing student anxiety and stress. Brother Adam explains: “Each school is assigned a coach for the year, and he or she is available in person and through teleconferencing to help create action plans and strategies to improve student learning and engagement based on our data. At the time of the spring conference, we discuss and reflect to see if we met our goals and successfully addressed our action plans. We are trying to improve all throughout the year while staying closely aligned with the S.P.A.C.E. framework”.

Beyond students, Challenge Success also offers support for teachers through Professional Development Workshops and for parents through Parent Education Sessions. Challenge Success will help educate the entire Chaminade community in an effort toward continuing support of the Wellness Program. “This is not a one-year long project”, Brother Adam shares. “This is an instrumental part of our strategic plan, closely tied to our mission to love, learn, and lead, which sets Chaminade apart from other schools. This is about being transparent and reflecting upon and improving our best institutional practices. If we are cultivating compassionate leadership in our students, we cannot be stagnant. We have to efficiently use our resources and live out Fr. Chaminade’s words: ‘New times demand new methods.’”

THE ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER

Football Coach David Machuca is a long-time friend of Chaminade. He started coaching under Head Football Coach Ed Croson in 2009 for two years, and he returned in 2018 as a full-time employee in the football program. Working with athletes parents placed Machuca in a unique role, and he consistently fielded questions and concerns regarding academic support not only for freshman athletes but also for students hoping to become involved in the band, drama, robotics, and various club programs.

After working for one year, gathering data, and sharing his concerns and ideas with administration, Machuca wanted to take action. With his educational philosophy including the need to “encourage students to be active participants in their learning and not to hold their hand,” he had faith that any student had the capacity to thrive at Chaminade if he or she put forth the effort. Because he had direct access to football players, he decided to use the incoming freshman team of 2019 as a pilot experiment to offer additional academic support to students.

That fall, Machuca met with the players after school in the Fine Arts’ building during X Block. The meetings were not mandatory, but most of the freshman would check in with him to view their grades and any missing assignments and to get extra assistance navigating the challenges of high school. “I made myself available to them during X Block, in my office, in the locker room, and on the field,” Machuca explains. “I wanted them to know that I was their football coach, but more importantly, I was there to aid them with academics, which is the main reason why they are at Chaminade in the first place. President Rob Webb even came one afternoon to speak to the freshman football players about the importance of their studies along with their athletic aspirations.” Through this early mentoring process, Machuca also consistently communicated with parents to “uphold the promise” he made to them.

From the beginning, Machuca wanted to tap into and cultivate the important role that parents have in the academic process of their students. This necessary relationship became solidified with the help of Mr. Chad Hagle. “One day Chad came up to me, and I shared my ideas about the

support program with him,” Machuca shares. “He has a son, Brayden, who is a current sophomore on the football team, and he asked me how he could help.” Hagle’s expertise manifested as an instrumental asset to the program.

Machuca continues, “Chad did much research regarding budgeting and other financial issues to help make the program work. He gathered information and contacted other schools who had programs similar to

the one we were envisioning. His time and talents were so valuable for making the Academic Resource Center (ARC) a viable reality, and I appreciate his efforts in helping us figure out the structure of the program.”

Hagle devotes much of his efforts to promoting improvements in education, and he appreciates robust tutoring programs. He views the Academic Resource Center as a place where students “receive the extra academic support they need to achieve their true potential. The built-in component of developing self-advocacy and accountability in students is an extra benefit of the ARC.” Hagle challenges Chaminade to make the ARC a “permanent fixture” in the curriculum by continuing to cultivate the support and commitment that such a program needs to flourish. His son, Brayden, entered the program, which was required of all freshman football players at first. Brayden, however, “earned his way out” demonstrating responsibility due to his high grades and positive study habits, but Brayden gleaned positive lessons from the experience. “My son’s take away included the ability for him to translate teamwork from the field to the classroom. With all players participating, not one was singled out or labeled, which helped solidify them as a team.”

With Hagle’s aid and after further consultation with administration about the ever-changing student demographic at Chaminade, Machuca wanted to formulate a more structured academic plan for the spring of 2020 while reaching out to a larger student population. This task soon proved to

be a daunting one, and he enlisted the aid and support of Vice-Principal, Lisa Magorien, who throughout her career in education has been an advocate of students and meeting their needs wherever they are. “With Lisa’s involvement and leadership, our simple program soon blossomed into the Academic Resource Center,” Machuca explains. “Now students enroll in a paid after-school program run under her direction, and I will still run a more informal support system for freshman football players. If they need further assistance, they can join the ARC.”

The idea of an Academic Resource Center is not new to Chaminade, but within a few short months, Machuca and Magorien were able to organize the details and position the program to run smoothly. Magorien made sure that students who are on academic probation or who are on the ineligible list because of consistent low grades are invited to join the Center. “We met every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:15 pm to 4:45 pm to ensure that students attended X Block before coming to the Center,” Magorien shares. “A student needs a reason to be in the program, and we are also opening our services to any incoming students who may be at-risk.” Both Machuca and Magorien recognize the need for student accountability in such a program, so when in school, two classrooms situated next to each other are used after school, and students must check-in electronically using their student ID cards. Magorien primarily worked with

sophomores, while long-term substitute teacher, Allison Turley, worked with freshman and juniors. A math teacher was hired to attend each meeting, and both California Scholarship Federation (CSF) students and Spanish Honors’ Society students were on hand volunteering their service hours.

The Academic Resource Center was making great progress with students when the quarantine hit in the middle of March. Magorien clarifies that the team

kept moving forward within the new academic parameters: “We continued our Tuesday and Thursday afternoon sessions with fifteen- minute time slots for students to meet individually with us online. We checked gradebooks for missing assignments, emailed teachers and counselors, and communicated with parents to consistently stay in touch during the lockdown. We used all resources at our disposal from phone calls, to texts, to Zoom meetings, to

gathering feedback from teachers be sure that kids stayed on task. I am happy to report that there currently are no students on the ineligible list.”

Current junior Daniele Quartararo greatly improved his grades and work ethic, which he attributes to his participation in the ARC. “I was busy with wrestling during the first semester of my sophomore year and starting homework late when I had little motivation to do it. My grades struggled, but with the help of the ARC during second semester, I learned how to monitor my grades, improve time management and organizational skills, communicate with my teachers,

and pass all of my classes.” Daniele’s father, Phil Quartaro, is also a solid fan of the ARC. According to him, “The program was not an intrusion for Daniele; it offered a bookmark in his day for him to complete his work. He felt that an additional personal interest was taken in him, and his confidence grew as the semester progressed. Especially with the move to distance learning, the technological component became clearer to Daniele and proved to be of great value for him.”

Both Machuca and Magorien believe that due to the success of the Academic Resource Center and its convenient time slot taking

place after school, the program is sure to continue to expand and improve. Coach Machuca captures the sentiment of the reason for the program because he always wants to help any student on campus who needs extra support. “At Chaminade,” he reflects, “we educate the whole person, and the Center is just another, growing avenue for us to continue to do so.”

Registering for the Academic Support Center takes place through the Chaminade Center for Excellence, and financial aid may be available for students who qualify.

IN CHALLENGING TIMES

Blessed William Joseph Chaminade and the early Marianist brothers and sisters dealt with the aftermath of the French Revolution and took aim to reChristianize France by founding schools. Today, we continue the work of the Marianists in a new revolution: COVID-19.

Living through this new revolution has not been easy for all of us. As the Task Force Chair, my team and I had to make the best assessments in a context of incomplete information and uncertainty on how to reimagine our temporary Chaminade landscape during this pandemic. Deploying new strategies and best practices for a distance learning environment was never something that we would ever imagine. This was done at an accelerated pace of change, where even the consensus of inclusivity was challenged. Day after day, the Task Force brainstormed and drafted protocols and policies that would allow us to deliver a robust, Catholic, Marianist educational experience. However, because of the fluidity of COVID-19 and its rising cases, we found ourselves pivoting back and forth in our decisions because information delivered by the California State Department of Public Health and the LA County Health Department would change almost daily.

It was an overwhelming experience. But what kept the Task Force going was having our beloved students in mind. Every decision that we made was rooted in our mission and how it would impact student learning and engagement. We often turned to Blessed Chaminade for words of encouragement: “It is in prayer that you will find peace for your soul, the strength, enthusiasm and the means that allow us to multiply our efforts when we are overburdened.”

Turning to Blessed Chaminade’s words helped us realize that faith would get us through these unsettling times to safely reopen our school even in a distance learning environment. It is no coincidence that this is the year of celebrating the characteristic of Marianist education, Formation in Faith, in the life of the school.

HERE ARE THREE WAYS IN WHICH WE WILL ANIMATE FAITH IN 2020-2021:

WE WILL RELY ON FAITH SEEKING UNDERSTANDING

Faith is not a one-way street and cannot stand alone. Faith asks us to consider an active love of God seeking a deeper knowledge of God and ourselves as being created in the image of God. It’s a balancing act that requires prayer and asking God the question, “what does this mean for me and for others?” What does scripture and tradition say about this? This is why we value intelligence in our Catholic faith to help us seek understanding in everything that we do in our human experience of learning, growing, loving, and mastering skills.

WE WILL ALWAYS LOOK TO MARY AS THE EXAMPLE AND INFLUENCE OF THE EDUCATOR IN FAITH

We find in Mary a woman strong in faith. Considering her life, we see the care, concern, and courage in her presence under the cross of her Son, Jesus Christ. We strive to personally possess these virtues of Mary and foster them in our students.

WE WILL CONTINUE TO BE INCLUSIVE AND DISTINCTIVELY CATHOLIC

In our human relationships, true inclusivity is built on a strong personal identity. Chaminade College Preparatory is inclusive and distinctively Catholic. We are distinctive because we are sure of our identity in Jesus Christ, and uphold and teach the doctrine, morals and values of the Roman Catholic faith. We are inclusive because we welcome non-Catholic students and educators to dialogue with Catholics on the nature of their religious identity. As one human family, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, we celebrate the presence of God in one another through the uniqueness of the represented faith traditions at our school.

THE LINDA BARKAN NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY (NJHS) SCHOLARSHIP

This award is presented in honor of Linda Barkan, who was assistant principal on the middle school campus for many years and was responsible for bringing NJHS to the middle school campus. MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT

The following is Colin’s commencement speech.

The beginning of sixth grade was like being shot out of a cannon. Everything seemed like it was moving at the speed of sound, and if you blinked, you might miss something important.

Middle school. These two words can keep you up at night. These two words can make you smile. But most importantly they can make you remember. Three years ago, I couldn’t even imagine being where we are today. People talk about middle school and their experience. Some people may give you tips on how to survive middle school. You can even buy a book on the do’s and don’ts of middle school. But you never really know what it’s like until you experience it yourself, because everyone sees it through a different lens and perspective.

We have learned many things in our time at Chaminade. Things about history, science, math, English, leadership, a foreign language, and ways to deepen our faith. We have gotten to know the people who sat to the left and right of us in class. Each of us helped shape the lives of those who were around us. We have also learned more about ourselves.

Chaminade heading? When is lunch?

Where are the bathrooms? Even though we were all nervous, we soon got to know the other members of our WEB group and made a few friends. The teachers were kind and understood our stress. They calmly helped us open our lockers, showed us to class, and gave us some grace if we were a little bit late to our next block. As the first semester was about to end, the inevitability of our first final exams started to creep into our lives and stress soon took control of us. Even though it seemed impossible in the beginning, we eventually made it and survived the Scantrons. At the sixth grade retreat, Mrs. Beskid taught us about the term “Imago Dei” and how we are created in the image of God. We were given the creative liberty to make our own path and do as we choose, and we were reminded about the importance of making choices in line with our own morals and values.

Seventh grade was when we stepped into “the abyss.” This was the year of change. We were now considered Chaminade professionals. The sixth graders looked up to us, and the eighth graders got ready to eventually pass us the torch. This brought another level of duty. Life was getting tougher. There was more homework and longer tests. But we made great memories as we met new people, competed on sports teams, ran fundraisers for those in need, and listened to our teachers complain about us smelling like squid after the dissection lab. If the world knocked us down, we were willing to get back up onto our feet.

The first semester of eighth grade seemed to come and go in an instant. We were finally at the top of the school and we could enjoy the view from above. But with great power comes great responsibility. We became the face of Chaminade and started giving back. Our knowledge turned into action, and our confidence grew. Then the second semester of eighth grade came. From Kobe to COVID, 2020 has not been what we expected. The death of Kobe Bryant shocked our school community. Next the global pandemic of COVID-19 slowly crept into our lives, getting closer and closer to us. When we first received the quarantine order to stay home from school, I thought we would only be gone a couple

of weeks. However, things soon escalated in a way most of us could have never imagined outside of a movie.

All of a sudden, we were sitting in our bedroom talking to a teacher through our computer. On Mondays, we were given a list of assignments to complete by a certain date. We were waking up a lot later in the mornings, maybe around 8, 9, or 12. At first, most of us were afraid to use the microphone on our computer, so we would type all our questions in the chat. As a result, the teachers said it felt like they were talking to themselves sometimes. We missed seeing our friends in person but we kept in touch over things like FaceTime and Zoom. I know there were many nights when I stayed up playing video games with my friends, not as much for the game part of it, but just to talk with another person my age (Sorry mom and dad). Our hair grew to record lengths. We finished years worth of TV and movies in a matter of days, while trying not to finish all the quarantine snacks. During isolation, Chaminade middle school stayed resilient and connected. We will probably be the only eighth grade Chaminade class to have an online field day. We watched Aiden Weinstein on his morning show with different special guests each time. They talked and competed in games like virtual charades, and one time, the winner even got a front of the lunch line pass to their very own kitchen. We

sent our amazing trick shots and Rube Goldberg machines to NadeSquad. There were so many unimaginable experiences this semester. Yet, let us not forget in the haze of COVID and quarantine the many accomplishments of our class while at Chaminade.

The cross country team won the Delphic league championship, the girls Delphic 8 volleyball team was league champions after an undefeated season, and there were countless other sports victories. During this year’s justice fair, we netted more than $11,000 for a number of charities. Even though the C-Notes did not get to go to Vienna this year, they gave an amazing performance last year in Carnegie Hall, New York. Our VRC robotics team competed in the world finals. The members of the drama program organized many impressive productions, such as Elf the Musical. The dance team was very successful in a number of shows and events. Our bands grew and received awards during competitions. At the beginning of my speech, I said that middle school has helped us learn more about ourselves. However, middle school has not just taught us who we are, it also has taught us who we can become. Even in times of COVID we need performers to entertain us, athletes to inspire us, business people to find new ways of operating, and of course scientists to find cures and healers to heal us. Any one of us can become any one of them. This year, we read the book Fahrenheit 451, where Ray Bradbury talked about the mirrors in our

everyday life. These mirrors allow us to look into ourselves, see our values, and see what we can do. Our first day at Chaminade as a sixth grader was a tough experience. Our first final exam at Chaminade was a tough experience. Our 7th grade year was hard because more was expected of us. These are not the most challenging things in the entire world, but they were small mirrors into who we are, and they have prepared us for the bigger challenges in life, which have reached us much sooner than anyone expected.

Our graduation is the end of one journey and the beginning of a longer, perhaps more challenging and now unpredictable one. Wherever your high school career takes you, you will bring all that you learned here, whether it was in the classroom, on the field, on the stage, sitting in the cafeteria, or doing Schoology Conference in your own bedroom. We have made Chaminade COVID history together and we are ready for the next step in our life adventure. We will continue to bloom where we are planted. Thank you to our parents and families, who have guided us through the windy roads of middle school. Thank you to our teachers, principal, staff, and administrators, who have answered endless amounts of questions and put up with us while wearing a smile on their face. Finally, I want to say thank you to the graduating class of 2020 and to Chaminade middle school for giving us all so many unforgettable memories.

THE FATHER CHAMINADE AWARD is the greatest honor the school can bestow upon a graduate. It is presented to the student who best displays the highest qualities of a Marianist education, an outstanding degree of religious, social, and academic maturity, and a great sensitivity to other people. This year the recipient is Matthew Johnson.

THE BROTHER JAMES LOUGHRAN AWARD is the second highest award given in recognition of outstanding service to the school. Hard work and dependability are qualities recognized by this award. This year’s recipient is Julia Quiroz.

THE BROTHER LEROY VIERA SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a senior who has been of service to the school in a variety of ways and whose hard work and dedication often goes unrecognized. The recipient will also receive a $1,250 college scholarship endowed by the Ulrich Family. This year’s recipient is Jater Webb.

THE ST. THOMAS MORE AWARD recognizes academic achievement and is awarded to the student with the highest GPA in his or her class as determined at the end of the fall term. This year’s St. Thomas More Award was presented to Mary Brenna Cheney, and Lauren Lombardi.

THE LOS ANGELES ARCHDIOCESAN CHRISTIAN SERVICE AWARD is presented to seniors who best exemplify the Christian call to serve. This year’s recipients are Matthew Johnson, Brianna Norton, and Julia Quiroz.

THE CITIZENSHIP AWARD is awarded to the student whose high school career exemplifies the many facets of participating in school life including religious growth, social and academic achievement, and a high level of involvement in school activities. THE VENERABLE MARIE THERESE DE LAMOROUS SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARD recognizes a student who, throughout her/his four years at Chaminade, demonstrated a passion for social justice and has worked to improve the lives of the student body and the broader community through education, advocacy, and works of social action. Reflections of a graduate

Mary Brenna Cheney '20 High School Valedictorian

If we draw upon the lessons we have learned, and gratitude for what we have been given, we can see that we are not lost, but simply on an adventure that took an unexpected turn. This detour has brought us a new appreciation for our family and friends, for daily life at Chaminade, and for what it means to live in the present.

I have to confide, that writing a Valedictorian speech in 42 hours was more than a little overwhelming. Most daunting, was that I was told the speech needed to present a “Vision for the future of the graduating class.” And, because I have been missing all of you, and the rest of our Chaminade community, so very much the truth is that my own vision of the future has been blurred.

There has been endless press about the “losses” suffered by the Class of 2020. Chaminade, our families, and in some ways the entire country, have tried to compensate for what should have been, but there’s been very little about how “lost” we feel amidst the uncertainty.

As the world debates the accuracy of statistics, the efficacy of masks, and how to balance civil rights against health and human safety, we, the graduates of 2020, are left wondering if our desperate wishes to celebrate together, and for colleges to open their dorms and campuses for in-person instruction are legitimate, or merely signs of privilege that we should strive to rise above.

So, it’s not surprising that there were days when my vision was so myopic that sitting next to friends at In-N-Out was the extent of the dream.

But when I really think hard about what our future looks like, what the fact that we are graduating during a global pandemic means for our future, and what unique perspective will we bring to the world, I see the promise that we, as members of the Class of 2020, now have a collective knowledge that will forever shape our understanding of the world – uniquely positioning us as leaders in making the world a better place.

Having been separated from one another for far too long, we value people and human contact above all else, know with certainty that social media is no substitute and that texting, emailing, and Zoom will never be enough for us.

Having seen in action how drugs like remdesivir, which failed for Ebola, and failed for hepatitis, can show promise for coronavirus, we have a deeper understanding that failure really is a bridge to opportunity.

Having seen countries sharing scientific data, industry repurposing their facilities to fill voids in PPE, and donations of vast amounts of money to research, we can say with conviction that we are stronger together.

Having been the focus of our families at home and our Chaminade family at school, we’ve learned how to care for those who have suffered a loss. And we will pay it forward knowing that while we can’t compensate for someone’s loss, we can help to alleviate their pain through loving action.

And having seen the world come to a screeching halt, we know not to postpone life experiences, our hopes and dreams, or spending time with the people who are important because the moment could slip away.

In Chemistry, we learned about state functions, the concept that a property’s value does not depend on the path taken to reach that specific value; COVID-19 has absolutely taken us off our path; we are not where we thought we would be, and we are not doing what we thought we would be doing.

But that does not in any way affect our value or our ability to be what we were meant to be.

In fact, we may get there faster. Because after having life put on hold, we will have the wisdom to seize every opportunity the moment it is presented.

Having seen the world come to a screeching halt, we know not to postpone life experiences, our hopes and dreams, or spending time with the people who are important because the moment could slip away.

For me, this will mean volunteering with Floating Doctors in Panama for two months next summer (or the first summer possible). What will it mean for you?

We, the babies of 9/11, may be graduating during a global pandemic. And we may be feeling lost, not knowing what our college experience will look like; when we will be able to travel the world; how strong the economy will be when we graduate or what tomorrow holds.

But if we draw upon the lessons we have learned, and gratitude for what we have been given, we can see that we are not lost, but simply on an adventure that took an unexpected turn. This detour has brought us a new appreciation for our family and friends, for daily life at Chaminade, and for what it means to live in the present.

We are charged with embracing those gifts and using that knowledge in a way that propels us forward, full speed, towards our greatest ambitions.

Let’s go out into the world ready to accomplish the impossible, devoting our lives to those who need our help the most. Because we now know that there is no time for hesitation. We now understand that our lives and interactions with the world are precious. So we are prepared to go forward enjoying the moment and working toward the greatness each and every one of us is destined to achieve.

Every generation has a defining moment. This is ours. And we will make the world a better place because of it.

As we graduate today and look forward to celebrating in person on July 18, I hope you each are comforted by the sense of family spirit that has connected us to one another at Chaminade. Like any strong family, we have our traditions and our collective memories. We have the blue field, 12:50 days, and 3:00 prayer. Founders Day Mass, WHAP must-knows, Chem SLOs, and a general consensus that Candice and Lorenzo are a huge part of this family, and that we should probably thank them a little more often.

We know that the Chem dept makes the best cookies, campus ministry has the best snacks, and that every faculty member has their own hallmark, whether it’s Mr. Ochs’ stopwatch and whistle, Mr. Casey setting off the fire alarm with his pumpkin demonstration, or Mr. Crossley as the Shakespeare-quoting surfer.

We have learned by example, that family spirit means putting your family members before yourself.

We see it when teachers go out of their way to help us succeed, like Ms. Stewart holding online AP workshops for three days in a row, including on her Mothers’ Day, when Mr. Naka gives up free Saturdays to hold study sessions, and never misses an X-block, and when Mr. Casey spends endless hours designing a game called Atomica to help us learn (instead of marketing it for sale which would probably be a lot more profitable).

When Mr. Crossley writes 40 student recommendations on his own time every year, and Ms. Nalbandian, Ms. Chang, and Ms. G practice interactive English projects with one another on Zoom to find fun and engaging assignments during the stay-at-home order, we know we are loved.

And, in perhaps one of the greatest gestures of selfless love, when Brother Tom came out of semi-retirement to be our principal during the time we needed him most, he showed us what family means.

To Brother Tom, Mr. Webb, the administration, faculty, and staff at Chaminade, thank you so very much for making Chaminade a place we are sad to leave, and that we will miss when we are gone.

Senior Class Gift

The Class of 2020 comes together to give back to Chaminade.

The Senior Class Gift is an opportunity for the senior class to show the community their gratitude for their educational experience while doing their part to help raise Chaminade’s alumni participation rate.

Previous classes have donated a variety of items including water fountains, padding on the baseball field, an eagle statue and benches. The senior class gift has been a way for graduating seniors to leave their legacy on campus for the years to come.

The 2020 Senior Class Gift Committee consisted of 22 members led by Student Council Alumni Relations Commissioners Brianna Norton and Natasha Meyer. Together, the class of 2020 raised $3,749 from 196 donors. Donors attended a “100 Days ‘till Graduation Party” on February 20, 2020 to kick off their graduation celebrations and paint a canvas to be displayed in the Bob Hope Center.

In order to benefit incoming high school students, the committee formed the Class of 2024 Family Spirit Scholarship with funds raised. This was awarded to Chaminade middle school students matriculating to the high school for the 2020-2021 school year. Five students were chosen anonymously from a pool of 71 applicants to carry on the legacy and family spirit of the members of the Chaminade Class of 2020. Each recipient was awarded a one-time scholarship to help offset the cost of tuition for their freshman year.

The Chaminade family took its largest annual fundraising event virtual this year for our first-ever online, livestreamed gala on May 2, 2020. Chaminade’s Gala Benefit & Auction, Moon River, initially scheduled for March 14, was canceled due to state and local public health advisories regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. The health and safety of the Chaminade community remain the school’s number one priority.

While so much of the world had been altered, one unique aspect of Chaminade that remains unchanged, despite social distancing, is our family spirit. Gala attendees gathered with their families and friends to celebrate Chaminade from afar. The virtual, livestreamed event was hosted by Chaminade’s very own Joseph Norton ’88, who brought love and laughter into every home. The night consisted of a Senior Show, Senior Tribute, Moon River Musical Performance, guest appearances by our Gala Chairs Karen Valentine P’92 P’95, Board Member, and Helen Griffiths P’22 P’25 and Chaminade leadership, and an online auction. The Chaminade Gala raised over $200,000, providing additional resources for the middle and high school campuses.

Chaminade is grateful for all the volunteers who shared many hours with the school to make the gala a success. Especially our committee leads Summer Ann Lookofsky (auction), Nikki Williams (basket shoppe), Elitres Freelon (decorations), Cindy Ball (gift card bingo), Nicole Borkgren, Diane Klotz, Abby Krasny and Jennifer Prendergast (reservations), Julie Nadler, and Marci Stark (senior Show), and Shirley Teglas (wine pull) for their tireless service. Volunteers are an essential part of Chaminade’s operations and are instrumental to the success of many of our programs and events. From large and exciting events like the Chaminade Gala Benefit & Auction to the smaller, less glamorous envelopestuffing parties, our volunteers do it all. Chaminade extends a heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers for their efforts throughout the school year.

This year we honor thirteen extraordinary volunteers with the 2020 Spotlight on Service Award. These volunteers have their last child graduating from the high school. Their commitment to Chaminade over the last four to seven years have had an astounding effect on our school.

PAM HOYT P ’15 ’20

Where do we even start when speaking about all the wonderful things about Pam? She is extremely generous, a joy to be around, and naturally gets along with the students and is very admired by them as well. Pam truly enjoys helping and cares deeply about the well-being of our students and our school as a whole. It is noticeable how students flock to talk with her to ask her about her day or to just share a joke. She is Chaminade’s biggest fan and has not withheld sharing her talents with us throughout the years. This includes being the Holly Berry Chair, aiding our fundraising during the Annual phone-a-thons, Gala, Hospitality, and her warm presence at Boosters every Thursday at our West Hills Campus. Everything is more enjoyable with Pam around!

CHERYL PATTERSON P ’17 ’20

Cheryl has spent the past five years serving Chaminade students, teachers, and families through several volunteer groups and committees. As the Parents Association’s current president, Cheryl has contributed countless hours to Homecoming, Used Uniform sales, family scholarships, Family Fun Day, and more benefitting Chaminade students. The annual Homecoming Food Fair is one of Chaminade’s largest and fun events involving the entire community. Proceeds raised at the Food Fair benefit student clubs and organizations, providing them with funds to enrich their activities. In addition, Cheryl has served on the Hospitality Committee and as a House Parent at the middle school. She has been an invaluable volunteer for the annual Gala and Benefit Auction and the middle school, Father-Daughter Dance. Cheryl currently serves as a member of Chaminade’s Board of Directors, where her leadership skills are being applied to help shape the school’s future. We are grateful for Cheryl’s calm spirit and love for Chaminade.

From the moment Laura stepped onto the Chaminade campus, she was allin for our Chaminade Eagles. She is a breath of fresh air with an incredibly positive spirit. Laura has been an active volunteer on the Gala Committee, Post-Prom Committee, and Phon-a-thon. Then in 2018, Laura co-chaired Chaminade’s signature fundraiser, the Gala Benefit and Auction, Carnevale. She raised funds as an Ambassador to the President with the phon-a-thon program, and through her incredible connections and donations towards the Gala. Laura made a considerable impact on Chaminade during the four years we have had the pleasure to work with her. She is one of a kind! Laura, you will be incredibly missed, not only for your service but also for your kind spirit and generous heart.

Ajay and Garima are wonderful representatives of Chaminade. Garima shares with us that she was raised to serve and give back, and they both do so with a smile. Whenever there is a need, they show up, even if it’s only for an hour or two to stuff envelopes or help with Boosters. They are both willing to go the extra mile, and you can see they genuinely enjoy their time serving at Chaminade. They volunteered with the Homecoming Committee, Post Prom Committee, Boosters, and the Gala and Benefit Auction. They helped with Open House - welcoming families and providing hospitality. Ajay has been an amazing advocate, calling parents during phone-a-thons to increase parent participation in giving to the school and supporting the Chaminade Fund. Both Ajay and Garima’s values are apparent in all they do, and Chaminade is grateful for their many years of service.

Julie and Omar make an incredible team as Chaminade parents and volunteers. When you are around them, you can immediately feel the love and respect they have for each other, and this is reflected in the amazing spirit they bring to Chaminade. They are such a pleasure to work with, especially during the busy basketball season and at other athletic events. They are always the first ones at the event and the last ones to leave. When we think of Julie and Omar, we think of friendship, generosity, dedication, and fellowship. We never have to wait long for their response when we ask them for help because before we know it, they are already cooperating and making their impact. From serving as lead basketball parents to their involvement in Hospitality and Boosters, their commitment to Chaminade is unconditional, and they exemplify what it means to be proud Chaminade parents!

Tracy is an invaluable member of the Chaminade community as she has helped with so many different committees over the years. She volunteered on the Gala Committee, Holly Berry Committee, Homecoming Committee, and the Golf team. Tracy is a team player and always willing to help when asked. She assists with small tasks like stuffing envelopes; however, she is not afraid to tackle the big stuff either. In 2015, Tracy blessed us with her leadership talents as chair of our largest fundraiser, the Gala Benefit and Auction, Enchanted. Thank you, Tracy, for your service to our community and your sense of humor, kind spirit, and good heart.

Patty Pelayo has been a parent volunteer with the Chaminade Players since her son Nicholas joined the program during his freshman year. When Nicholas was a sophomore, Patty took on the enormously challenging, yet fulfilling task of feeding the starving masses of Drama players during production week, drama retreats, and every other drama event. Over the years, Patty became a Drama Mama to each and every one of these students and a friend to every parent. She made sure that all of their needs were met and created a fun atmosphere for all. Patty goes above and beyond and will be missed by all of us. We are eternally grateful to her, and we love her. She is welcome to come back and help with the Players at any time. Once a Drama Mama, always a Drama Mama.

JENNIFER PRENDERGAST P ’17 ’17 ’20

With the last of her three boys graduating from Chaminade this year, Jen has been a mainstay and faithful parent advocate of Chaminade for the last seven years. During this time, she served as an active volunteer leading the Reservation Committee of the Gala, coordinating Soccer parents and alumni gatherings, and, most recently, participating in the new Chama Mama committee. Over the past three years, Jen played a leadership role as a member of the Board of Directors and the Advancement Committee. She has been a part of the very fabric of the Chaminade community with her dedication of time, expertise, and philanthropic support to the school. Fortunately for us, we are not saying farewell to Jen, as she is assuming the lead role of Chair of the Advancement Committee of the Board. We are blessed to have her as an integral part of our community as a board member and a new Les Dames de Chaminade. Her warm spirit, contagious enthusiasm, and unwavering commitment to Chaminade have made her an invaluable asset to our Chaminade family.

Timothy is the Medical Director of Respiratory Care and the Clinical Service Chief for Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center. He oversees the medical center’s response to COVID-19 patients in respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. Timothy is also the medical director for 150 respiratory therapists who care for COVID-19 patients in the emergency department and the hospital. And he is the physician in charge of the team taking care of critically ill COVID-19 patients at the UCSD Medical Center. In collaboration with his colleagues at the engineering school, Timothy created a new technique to provide advanced respiratory care to COVID-19 patients while protecting hospital staff from infection. He says, “The pandemic hurt many good people, but I saw it bring out the best in our staff, who served their patients with courage and grace. I am honored and humbled to be included in the effort.”

Recently, Timothy was part of a volunteer team of medical workers who who went to work in intensive care units in Mexico (Tijuana and Mexicali) to help with their critically ill COVID-19 patients.

Naomi works as a certified Ophthalmic Technician for Rocky Mountain Eye Center in Missoula, Montana, the state’s largest eye clinic. Although she is not on the front lines of treating any COVID-19, the Rocky Mountain Eye Center clinic has continued to provide necessary treatments. The clinic continues to perform surgeries needed for retinal detachments or diabetic retinopathy. She helps treat diabetic retinopathy patients and retinal vein occlusion patients who still need their treatments to preserve their vision, some of whom already lost vision in one eye. She is thankful the clinic took quick action to set safety measures at the early onset of COVID-19, helping to reduce the spread of infection. She says, “I am thankful that our management and doctors chose to stay open when many others across the state did not.”

Martin is an adjunct associate professor in Community Health at Portland State University, practices internal medicine, and is on the Social Justice Committee of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) and the Board of Advisors for Oregon PSR. He received his BS and MD from UCLA, completed his internship and residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, and was the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at Stanford University. Martin has taught courses in medical humanities, public health, social justice ethics, women’s studies, and the History of Medicine at UCLA, UCSF, Stanford, OHSU, Clark College, and Portland State. During the pandemic, Hari was finishing his Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship in New York City at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He took care of patients with COVID-19 in hospital wards, ICU, and the operating room. The picture above was taken after the center started operating on cancer patients again. Hari has since taken a new position at UC Irvine Health in the Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Before his medical career, Robby had a short-lived, but immersive career in the restaurant industry, and would like to recognize food service, delivery, and other service industry workers during this pandemic. Determining the right gift is just as important as making the gift. There are many options in your estate planning from which you can choose.

BEQUESTS: Include Chaminade in your will or living trust. A bequest is a simple, flexible, and versatile way to ensure Chaminade can continue its mission for years to come.

RETIREMENT PLAN ASSETS: Make a gift while leaving more of your estate to your heirs. Your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), or other qualified retirement plan may be heavily taxed if left to anyone other than a legally recognized spouse. By naming Chaminade as a beneficiary of all or a portion of a retirement plan, you avoid both the estate tax and income tax due on these tax-deferred plans if you distributed them to your heirs.

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION (QCD):

If you are over the age of 70 ½, a QCD allows you to make a tax-free donation of up to $100,000 per year directly from your IRA or Roth IRA to Chaminade. Your charitable contribution to Chaminade can satisfy your required minimum distribution from your retirement account. Under the SECURE Act, the initial required minimum distribution now begins at age 72 from 70 ½, effective for individuals who reach age 70 ½ after December 31, 2019.

The new CARES Act enables taxpayers with a required minimum distribution (RMD) from certain retirement accounts in 2020 to skip those RMDs this year. However, a gift from your IRA may still bring tax benefits in 2020.

INSURANCE: Making Chaminade a beneficiary or owner of a life insurance policy is an easy and inexpensive way to make a meaningful future gift while generating a charitable income tax.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST: A charitable remainder trust will help you maintain or increase your income while making a significant gift to Chaminade. This type of gift has the potential for an income tax deduction and upfront capital gains tax avoidance.

CHARITABLE LEAD TRUST: The income from a charitable lead trust can be directed to Chaminade for an established number of years. At the end of the term, the trust becomes the property of the individuals named by you. This differs from the unitrust or annuity trust in that Chaminade receives income from the trust during the trust period, rather than the trust corpus at the end of the trust period.

BENEFITS OF THE CARES ACT: The new CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act is designed to help you, businesses and nonprofits facing economic hardship during the coronavirus pandemic. In regards to fundraising, it encourages charitable giving from individuals and corporations by increasing tax deductions for charitable donations.
