Dear Chamblee Resident, I am happy to share with you the City of Chamblee Parks and Recreation Department’s Fall/Winter Activity Guide, which showcases the range of incredible activities, programs and events the department offers. This season’s guide, which includes a variety of sports, health and wellness programs and events is a testament to our ongoing commitment to provide quality recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.

We continue to take steps to enhance our public spaces, with several projects underway throughout the city. Among these are the renovation of International Village Park, the addition to Canfield Park and Segment 1 of Phase II of the Chamblee Rail Trail. Each of these projects broke ground in May and are planned for completion in early 2020, if not sooner. In addition to these projects, the city recently adopted the Rail Trail Phase 3 Concept Design Study and incorporated it into the its Comprehensive Plan. City staff hope to do the same with the Keswick Park Trails Master Plan soon.

Designs are underway for a new recreational park located on the old Jim Hearn Golf Range property on Buford Highway.

As we strive to create the best quality of life, we will continue working to create opportunities for our residents and visitors to interact, stay active and have fun. The Recreation Department is home to many such opportunities, so I encourage you and your loved ones to take advantage of all that we, and the rest of our great city, have to offer.

General Information Registration Information Registration for most City of Chamblee Parks and Recreation Department (CPRD) activities can be made on chambleerec.com. Users will need to make a free account, add any family members and select the program of their choosing. The activity will be reflected in the cart, which can then be paid for via credit card online. The Parks and Recreation Department also accepts cash, checks and money orders as payment for registrations in person or via mail.

CPRD also partners with many organizations to provide a variety of programs and athletics. At times, users will be redirected to the partnering organization’s website to register.

Refund Policy It is the policy of the City of Chamblee Parks and Recreation Department to provide high quality opportunities to those in the community and to accommodate the maximum number of participants allowed in these programs. To accomplish this, parks and recreation staff require sufficient time to notify people on the waiting list of any programs to allow them ample time to attend and to complete required paper work. If for any reason you or your child does not attend the program as registered, please let our office know as soon as possible so we can fill the opening.

Therefore, any participant may receive a 100% refund of their registration fee if the refund is requested at least TWO WEEKS (10 working days) prior to the first day of a scheduled program or activity. If less than two weeks and two business days prior to start of the program, only a 50% refund will be issued. No refund will be issued after 10 am two business days prior to the start of the program. Full refund or credit will be granted if the program is canceled by the department. No refund will be given for a child who is suspended or expelled. Refunds will be issued on chambleerec.com as either a credit card reimbursement, account credit or check. Parks and Recreation staff reserves the right to modify refund policies for family emergency situations that cause a cancellation after the deadlines above or for children dismissed from the program due to behavior or other extenuating circumstances.

Keep Chamblee Beautiful Keep Chamblee Beautiful (KCB) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to organize, educate, support and inspire the Chamblee community to invest their time, talents and resources into making Chamblee a cleaner, greener and more beautiful place to live, work and play. A member of Keep DeKalb Beautiful, KCB is a group of volunteers

Recreation Advisory Committee Chamblee Parks and Recreation has a Recreation Advisory Committee (RAC) made up of six City of Chamblee residents (may have up to two non-residents). The RAC serves as a voice for the Chamblee Parks and Recreation staff, both in bringing ideas from the community, as well as disseminating information to the community.

Each RAC member serves a two-year term that is eligible to be renewed at the end of two years if there are not others waiting to join the committee.

Youth Programs Creative Movement and Dance Instructor: Hannah Thompson

Choose from three different classes being held with Creative Movement and Dance: Tap/Ballet/Hip Hop for ages 4 – 7, which is a combination class that includes traditional tap and ballet with the more modern Hip Hop; Jazz/Hip Hop for ages 8 – 12, which is a combination class that includes a wide range of fun and upbeat movement; or choose a brand-new class called Dance Cardio for teens and adults, which is a combination dance and cardio class. Youth Programs Kung Fu:

Instructors: Sifu Peter Goulbourne, Jon Gass and John Hall This traditional Chinese Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu (Hakka Kuen) system is taught to improve practitioners’ overall well-being. Expect to learn basic Chi Kung (breathing exercises), foundational exercises and application of those exercises. No prior experience is required just a willingness to learn and work. Sessions are ten weeks long.

Youth Athletics Flag Football Youth Flag Football – Fall (Ages 4 to 14 years) I9 Sports offers boys and girls flag football for youth where play is 5 on 5, with no intentional contact allowed. Teams are organized into divisions based on the age of the child. Teams consist of six-ten players. Teams play a one-hour game followed by a 45-minute practice. Each player receives a reversible jersey and flag belt. Appropriate footwear (rubber cleats or athletic shoes) and mouth guard are required.

Lacrosse Zip Lacrosse – Fall (Ages 5 to 12 years) I9 Sports offers boys and girls lacrosse for youth where play is 3 on 3, with no intentional contact allowed. This is a six-week instructional program that will focus on the fundamentals of Zip Lacrosse. Each week will include practice focusing on lacrosse skills and will include a structured scrimmage game. Total time on the field will be about one hour each week. Teams are organized into divisions based on the age of the child. Appropriate footwear (rubber cleats or athletic shoes), your own lacrosse stick and mouth guard are required; reversible jerseys provided by i9.

Adult Programs CPR Training School Instructor: Christine Neely

Christine Neely and other instructors from the American Heart Association will be offering courses like Babysitter Boot Camp, Basic Life Support Training and others throughout the year. Basic Life Support (BLS) will train participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations and provide early use of an AED. Babysitter Boot Camp (BBC) participants will learn the business of being a good babysitter through safety skills, etiquette, marketing, choosing age-appropriate games, fun activities and knowing what parents are looking for when they hire a babysitter.

Instructor: Officer Chris Poythress The Women’s Self Defense Program is run by the Chamblee Police Department and empowers women with the knowledge, confidence and resources to reduce the occurrence of sexual assault crimes. Parks About the Park: In the center of Chamblee’s downtown, adjacent to City Hall, is City Hall Park. Constructed in 1995, this downtown park with its elaborate arbor, serves as a modified town square for the city. The park features numerous benches and a covered gazebo and is a favorite spring/summer lunch location for surrounding office workers.

About the Park: Completed in 1999, Clairmont Park is a small rectangular neighborhood park located less than one-tenth of a mile north of DeKalb-Peachtree Airport on Clairmont Road. The site encompasses 1.5 acres and serves as a connection between Chamblee’s oldest neighborhoods: Gordon Acres and Clairmont Hills.

Designed by the surrounding community, the park addresses the needs of the largest demographic groups in the area: senior citizens and young children. The park provides designated walking paths connecting the two neighborhoods and a toddler play area.

Parks Dresden Park

About the Park: In 2016, Dresden Park was transferred to the City of Chamblee from DeKalb County.

Dresden Park is a 25-acre park located in the southeast area of Chamblee, which was annexed into the City in 2013. It is also home to the DeKalb County Police Officer Memorial.

About the Park: The Huntley Hills Park is located at the corner of Admiral Drive and Longview Drive. It features a younger child’s play area with swings and a walking path that encircles its perimeter. A steel bridge spans the creek running through the middle of the park and leads directly into a “Butterfly Garden” that was designed, planted and is now maintained by neighborhood volunteers.

The seating area was designed and built as an Eagle Scout project.

Parks Keswick Park

3496 Keswick Drive, Chamblee, GA 30341 About the Park: This is Chamblee’s largest park, covering more than 45 acres, with a neighborhood focus. The park contains primarily active recreation facilities including: walking trails, dog park, a full-size adult softball field, T-ball field, soccer field, multi-purpose field, two tennis courts and an outdoor basketball court. The playground facilities are ADA accessible.

The newest addition to the park is a walking trail connecting the park to the Mid-City District! About the Park: Shallowford Park is located between Shallowford Road and Shallowford Place. Serving the neighborhoods of east Chamblee, this 1.16-acre park is geared toward family activities with a playground area, several picnic shelters, a large open field and a small walking trail.

About the Park: This area of land was purchased in 2016 from a homeowner and later turned into a one-acre park located in the Ashford Park neighborhood. The park also is close to Clairmont Park and DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. The park opened on April 22, 2018 and currently consists of a swing set made to look like a tree, park benches and other amenities. There also is a creek that runs the length of the park on the north side.

About the Park: Located in the International Village at the intersection of Chamblee Dunwoody and New Peachtree Roads, this is Chamblee’s newest park. The park boasts a state-of-the-art playground that is ADA accessible. The park also has picnic tables and an open play area.

Rail Trail Park

Walking Trails The City of Chamblee offers many wonderful walking paths, including around Keswick Park, Dresden Park and the new Rail Trail. The Rail Trail is an extensive 0.9 mile Rail Trail that twists and winds through the city. A grant was just provided to the City of Chamblee to extend the current Rail Trail to connect neighbors throughout the city, as well as to shopping centers and to restaurants.

The building of the next phase of the trail will begin soon.

Dresden Park sits on 25 acres of land, which includes approximately one mile of winding trails through the park and woods, as well as to the popular playground area and soccer fields.

There are also benches along the trail for anyone needing to take a break.

Keswick Park Trail

In 2016, several members of Keep Chamblee Beautiful started carving out a nature trail in the forested section (about 17 acres) of Keswick Park. This approximate half mile of trail is located behind the soccer fields and consists of one wooden bridge built by an Eagle Scout in 2017. The path continues to twist and wind near the creek to the playground, as well as around the large multipurpose field and gazebo area.

Rental Information Chamblee Parks and Recreation has one Community Building, one softball field, one T-ball field and two soccer fields for rent. Rental applications for both the Community Building and fields can be found on www.chambleega.gov * If you need assistance with a rental, please call the Parks and Recreation line at 770-986-5016. ** Gazebos/Pavilions cannot be rented. They are on a first come, first served basis. Charcoal grills also are located at each pavilion.
