WELCOME Fresh from flying back from ScotPlant 2022, I write this feeling a genuine buoyancy about this industry, due in part to a wonderfully managed, busy event showcasing all that is good from the UK and worldwide construction equipment industry.

My first ScotPlant showed me that all is as strong as ever and we have manufacturers producing some seriously good kit.

I won’t mention which exhibitors I spoke with as I am bound to miss some out, but hopefully you enjoyed the chats as much as I did.

Needless to say good times with friends old and new.

We are producing a video from the event, and you will be able to see it on our website imminently.

Speaking of video, we are continually developing in that medium to complement our print offering. We have produced two factory tour videos since the last issue, with Kocurek Excavators and INMALO. You can view both videos by searching for our sister publication, Demolition Hub’s channel on YouTube.

Suneeta Johal This mini-budget was an opportunity for Rishi Sunak to take significant action to help businesses to minimise the impact of rising inflation, which is at a 30-year high and continues to rise. At a critical time for manufacturing in the UK, it did not deliver and was very much an exercise of smoke and mirrors, as expected.

Petrol and diesel prices have soared in recent weeks, hitting an all-time high.

While the announcement of a fuel duty freeze and the temporary cut of 5p per litre is welcome, in reality, it will do very little in the way of easing the burden on the construction sector, where despite extensive lobbying, government has ignored pleas for a delay of the reform of

the red diesel and biofuels rebate.

Spiralling energy costs are crippling the sector and the situation has worsened due to Russia’s war on Ukraine. The lack of support for businesses is deeply disappointing. The VAT cut on energysaving devices, such as solar panels, has marginal benefits. Investment in alternative sources of power was overlooked and is an opportunity missed.

The National Insurance rise is still going ahead and although the raising of the threshold to £12,570 before NI is paid will go some way to help, it’s still not enough for the employer and will add to costs when businesses are already experiencing labour and worker shortages.

However, the increase of the employment allowance for small businesses to £5,000, which is a tax cut worth up to £1,000 for half a million small businesses is welcome.

The Chancellor also announced changes to research and development tax credits, saying the generosity of reliefs for business investment would be increased to boost UK productivity – but this would not be addressed until the autumn budget alongside cutting tax rates on business investment.

It was immediate help our sector needed – and once again government failed to deliver.

Kevin Minton Regrettably our calls for the superdeduction allowance (SDA) to be extended were not acted upon in the Chancellor’s Spring Statement. We are also disappointed that there has been no acknowledgment of the hardship, and no relief given, for companies in our sector adversely affected by the change from red diesel.

The Chancellor recognised the need for business investment in the UK to rise, however, UK PLC cannot wait for government action or plans in the autumn Budget – we need to see that now.

We were disappointed, if not surprised, to see no change to the policy of removing the right to use red diesel from our sector and many others. At a time of rising energy prices and general inflation, increasing the cost of providing essential materials will help no-one, not least the taxpayer who will see the cost of public projects rise considerably. Five pence per litre off fuel duty doesn’t make up for the extra 40p per litre on the diesel our members use on site.

“There are no alternatives to dieselpowered equipment at the scale our industry uses them and they will not be in the market for some time. There are also infrastructure challenges with either electricity or hydrogen power. So the change to the tax on diesel will not drive any environmental benefit in the next few years, which is why we asked for a delay at a time of soaring energy costs and rising general inflation.”

Manitou UK celebrates 50th anniversary Manitou Group, a worldwide reference in handling, aerial lift platforms and earthmoving, is celebrating 50 years of its UK subsidiary, based in the English town of Verwood, near Southampton.

Manitou UK distributes products and services throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The Manitou Group’s first international operation was established in 1972 in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire under the name Manitou Site Lift Limited, marking the beginning of the group’s internationalisation. In 1980, Manitou Site Lift Ltd expanded to its current premises in Verwood, and 1998 took its current name, Manitou UK. Manitou UK provides technical and sales support to 51 Gehl and Manitou dealers in 91 locations across England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The subsidiary now has around 50 employees, divided between sales administration, marketing, spare parts and after-sales service.

The market covered by Manitou UK represents nearly 10% of the group’s turnover, making it one of the main

markets after France and the United States. The subsidiary’s business is dominated by construction, which accounts for 60% of sales, with the agricultural market accounting for approximately 20%.

Mark Ormond, Managing Director of Manitou UK said: “We are very proud to be celebrating our 50th anniversary.

The construction market recovered very quickly after the 2020 fall, meaning our 2021 turnover was back to pre-pandemic levels and close to a record level. Although supply is currently the limiting factor

affecting our turnover, we expect 2022 to be a new record year of sales for Manitou UK. Thank you to all of our staff, dealers and customers for the trust you put in us.”

In 2017, the subsidiary saw its premises completely renovated in order to provide employees with optimal working conditions. The previously separate offices have made way for a large open-plan space that promotes team cohesion and communication between departments.

The workshops have also been modernised to improve the accommodation of technicians during training sessions.

Fuelling success, protecting our future: Toureen’s switch to bio-fuel As part of Toureen Group’s 2022 carbon reduction commitment, it has made the transition to HVO fuel. By moving its onsite fuel supply to Green D+ HVO (an enhancement of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), it is now using a viable alternative to ordinary diesel. The group is now on track to mitigate the significant emissions of construction plant machinery and vehicles, along with bringing about a considerable drop in its own carbon footprint. The HVO fuel supplied through its partnership with New Era Fuels has allowed all its sites within range of their depots to make the transition immediately.

90% reduction in embodied CO2 emissions Toureen Group’s move from diesel to Green D+ HVO reduces embodied CO2 emissions by up to 90%. The fuel is made

from 100% waste materials, making it both renewable and sustainably sourced, under the ISCC certification.

Ciaran Mcclearn, Managing Director of Toureen Contractors said: “As we await the advent of alternative powered construction machinery to become available for our operations, our transition to HVO is a significant step towards decarbonising our day-to-day operations, and ultimately our path to net-zero.

Xwatch expands global presence signing partnership with Tak Lee Machinery Company Limited (TLMC) TLMC is a leading earthmoving equipment sales and rental service provider in Hong Kong. The company is the sole dealer of Hitachi Construction Machinery in Hong Kong and Macau.

It is also a distributor of South African brand, Bell Equipment in Hong Kong and Swiss machinery brand Amman in both territories.

Johnson opens ‘benchmark’ gender diverse JCB India plant Boris Johnson opened JCB India’s newest factory while on a two-day tour in April. The high-tech plant in the west coast state of Gujarat has been described as a benchmark and will employ 50% women.

With 11 factories in the UK employing more than 7,500 people, JCB first began manufacturing in India in 1979 and is now the country’s leading producer of construction equipment.

The £100m plant located in Vadodara near the port city of Surat will fabricate parts for global production lines.

Joining the Prime Minister at the opening was JCB Chairman Lord Bamford, who led JCB’s expansion in India in the late 1970s, including the opening of its first factory in Ballabhgarh, near Delhi. Today JCB

has six factories in India at locations including Jaipur and Pune.

Lord Bamford said: “In its first year of full production, JCB India manufactured just 39 machines and by next year will have made a total of half a million. This country is now a major engineering power and being here has transformed our business. It has been a fabulous success, with so much more potential for growth. Such progress has only been possible by continued investment and the opening of our new Gujarat facility is an important step in growing our business here and around the world.”

JCB India CEO and MD Deepak Shetty said: “This new facility will create around 1,200 direct jobs when complete and thousands more in the supply

chain. It will also be a benchmark in the industry on gender diversity and modern technologies in laser cutting, welding and machining. Vadodara is a strategic location for JCB India given its proximity to ports and availability of raw materials and skilled talent. We would like to thank the Government of Gujarat for its phenomenal support with this project.”

India has been JCB’s biggest market every year since 2007 and one in two of every construction machine sold in India today is made by JCB. The new facility, which is on a 47-acre site, will be capable of processing 85,000 tonnes of steel annually.

JCB India has also set up a skills centre at the plant where young professionals will be trained to work on diverse job roles in manufacturing.

Significant boost in Liebherr Group turnover in 2021 In 2021, the Liebherr Group achieved a turnover of over €11.6bn, an increase of €1.3bn or 12.6%, almost matching its previous record year, 2019.

The conditions in the past financial year were difficult for manufacturing companies. From the second quarter in 2021 it was extremely difficult to procure various raw materials, components and electronic parts. This resulted in price increases and bottlenecks in the global supply chains.

Revenues in the earthmoving, material handling technology, deep

foundation machines, mobile and crawler cranes, tower cranes, concrete technology and mining product segments were 17% higher than in the previous year at €8bn.

Liebherr invested €559 million in research and development last year with alternative drive technologies continuing to be a focal point of this. In 2021, it worked on hydrogen-powered combustion engines and their injection technologies, as well as electric drives.

Furthermore, Liebherr prepared various product lines for the use of hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO) as a fuel.

Digitalisation was another focal point of R&D activities. In several product segments, existing technologies were optimised for remote control, automation and networking and the LiebherrRemote-Service App was extended. The development of two assist systems for mining trucks, which offer automatic steering assistance, reduce the strain on the driver and lower fuel consumption.

The Liebherr Group has started 2022 with a very good order situation.

Opportunities arise from the expected increase in demand in the various industrial sectors in which the Liebherr Group is active.

However, the effects on of the war in Ukraine can already be seen.

Liebherr is monitoring and assessing the situation in Ukraine and Russia on a daily basis and is in the process of adjusting its Russian activities to the extensive sanctions imposed on the country.

Mecalac appoints new UK General Manager Mecalac Construction Equipment UK has announced the appointment of Heath Davies as General Manager.

Following on from his story up to 2017, Lloyd Peckham brings us up to date with the Bearded Excavation story since then My name’s Lloyd Peckham, but on social media I’m better known as Bearded Excavation.

Bearded Excavation came about in February 2019. On my personal Instagram I followed a few machinery pages and always watched their videos.

Every now and then I uploaded machine

and work pictures to my personal page, but nothing spectacular.

I started following Conor Kelly, AKA Conor the Digger Driver. Looking at what he was doing, I thought: “I’m going to make a page like this for my work and start uploading machinery content only.”

So I did. I wanted a name that stood out and Bearded Excavation UK just came to me. I made the profile and didn’t tell anyone about it, not my family or friends, not even my missus.

I suppose I found it embarrassing that I was a digger nerd, so I just kept posting work pictures when I could. Then I got

chatting with Conor and he showed me where I was going wrong and what to do.

Now we’re good mates and speak on the regular.

I was taking videos and pictures on my phone but it really wasn’t cutting it so when my missus asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said a GoPro. She asked me what for and I said to film the machine and work I was doing. She looked at me strangely and laughed, but said OK. Now she gets it and supports me massively with what I do.

I’ve met many people through my socials and some will now be lifelong friends, so I thank everyone for the support they show me and the page.

In 2017, I started working for a rail company, L&W Contractors, operating Komatsu 118s 138s and 160s and Colmar T10000s. We used a wide range of attachments and the work was different every week.

I began working for Joyce Groundworks in 2018. My first job for Joyce was in Burgess Hill on a small housing development. I had a Hitachi ZX130-5 for a few months, then inherited a fairly new ZX130-6 and moved to Southwater.

turned up on the back of a lorry and I got a call to go up to the yard and pick it up.

I had no clue about it and was buzzing.

A few months went by and then one of the foremen said to me: “Don’t get too comfortable in that machine, you’ve got another new one coming with GPS.” So the new 130 turned up along with Sitech, who fitted Trimble Earthworks to the machine. I’d never used GPS before but I’d seen videos and read about it. They

showed me the basics and left me to it.

I was in at the deep end. Trying to get my head around looking at the bucket and a screen at the same time was hard. It gave me a headache, that’s for sure. But I was confident I’d be OK, so I just cracked on and now I wouldn’t be without it.

I struggled visualising what the pond was supposed to look like but the GPS helped me understand what it would look like, what went where, etc. It opened my

eyes to GPS. It makes the job you’re doing more efficient and productive. With me in the 130 and Mick, also known as Number 1, in his 210, we achieved the massive task of completing 75 plots in seven days.

This showed just how effective GPS is.

We went through the phase levelling sites ready to dig footings. We just tracked up and smashed out the footings.

Paul Argent, also known as RPA Media, came out to do a site visit and take photos, saying he couldn’t believe the rate we were going through digging these footings.

2021 Joyce took delivery of a new Hitachi ZX130-6 and ZX210-6 with Trimble Earthworks and Steelwrist. I had the 130 and Mick had the 210. These were the first tiltrotators on the firm and loads of people were sceptical about them but Mick and I were keen to show how effective these could be with GPS. Safe to say after a few months everyone knew it was the right choice.

The Steelwrists make the machines so much more versatile. You can get into smaller spaces and do more work than a standard machine can. These were a massive game changer and we wouldn’t be without either of them.

Working with more than six thousand machinery owners and operators in the UK and Ireland, and right across Europe, the company has become a trusted partner and advisor to some of the biggest players in the market today.

Marketing Director Roy Knappett has been with the company for nearly 19 years and

Starting his career working on the Surrey trade counter, he then spent over 10 years as part of the sales team, serving customers across the country.

This experience and the market insights gained by working so closely with customers in their own environments has been crucial in his current role as marketing director.

How do you fit in to HTS Spares?

I am the group marketing director here, responsible for overseeing the design and implementation of all our marketing functions across our three divisions, HTS Spares, Holm™ Filters and HTS Plant.

How did you first come to be at HTS Spares?

I joined in 2003 after leaving college. HTS is a family-owned company, bought by my father back in 1989. I grew up around the business and the workshop so joining the company was a natural fit.

Tell us about your career progression within HTS Spares When I first joined the business we mainly served the agricultural market, working mostly in the south-east. My first role was working on the trade counter in Dorking, Surrey. When the warehouse moved from Dorking to Hereford in 2006, I moved with it and took over the sales in Wales, the Midlands and

the south-west. After 10 enjoyable years I came off the road to take on the management of the marketing department.

How has HTS Spares developed in your time?

The business has changed massively over the past 10 years or so. We live in an ever-changing world and can’t afford to stand still for a moment. Customers are demanding so much more than just the lowest price and the focus is more on value, how we can really help our customers in their own roles, what pain points we can take away for them. Right across the company we are focused on transformation every day and are continually improving both our products and our service.

With this in mind, the role of marketing at HTS has developed substantially and plays an ever increasing role in our success. When I first joined the team there were just two of us. This has now grown to eight, spread across four different locations.

What is it about your role that attracts you?

One of the best parts of the job is to get out into the field and handle the actual product. There is nothing more satisfying

than to see new products coming through the R&D and QC process and being added to the range. We add around 1,000 new SKUs (Stock Keeping Unit) a year, which is quite some task.

We are also driving to source more from UK and European manufacturers as part of our sustainability programme.

How do you think your colleagues see you (or you would like them to)?

Hard one to answer. I would hope they would say someone who likes to make HTS a more enjoyable place to work and someone who is happy to help. I do enjoy getting involved whatever the task may be.

Q

Tell us more about HTS Spares history and development HTS Spares can trace its roots back to the 1970s when the company Holtrac was first established as a merchant for the local agricultural market in and around Dorking in Surrey. The company changed its name to Holmwood Tractors in the 1980s and the current owners bought this company in 1989. We continued as a tractor dealership and made our first foray into the plant hire market in the mid 1990s, when we started to supply the very first Ashtead

Plant depot. During the early 2000s we rapidly transitioned from an agricultural dealership to supplying the construction machinery market. A large proportion of our current customers have been with us along this journey.

We are proud to say we have been supplying some of the largest operators of construction plant for 25 years plus.

Tell us about HTS Spares’ growth path As a company we have seen solid growth since the very early 2000s. We have grown our reach to serve customers all over the UK and Europe and with some of our new technology offerings that are in the pipeline we are confident we will continue on this path of expansion.

What are the company’s USPs? Many of the products we supply can be bought elsewhere, but it is the complete package and service we offer that we are confident can’t be beaten. How can these benefit customers?

We offer a range of more than 20,000 parts, most of which we keep in stock for same day dispatch, suited exclusively for construction plant. With the introduction of our own filter brand, Holm™, in 2020, we now offer the most comprehensive range of parts and service in the industry. Our strength lies in our team and technical knowledge they have around the machinery our customers operate. This means they can offer the highest levels of support to ensure minimum downtime and the most cost effective solutions.

And finally What would you be in an alternative life?

I would say an engineer of a Formula 1 team. It’s a fascinating sport and the home of some amazing engineering and technology.

To get to work on the cars and build a championship wining machine must be extremely rewarding to say the least.

What’s your ideal weekend?

An ideal weekend involves time spent with the family, a cycle ride with my two young daughters and a number of good whiskies.

How would you treat your employees to a company excursion, money no object?

I would love to fly the whole team to Australia and explore the barrier reef by helicopter along with some great wine tasting experiences.

What’s your tipple of choice?

First choice would be Maker’s Mark 46 bourbon whisky.

Tell us about your team and working culture.

Our culture is built on teamwork. Some of our staff have been with us for 20 years or more, they have worked across multiple departments in the business, which gives them the knowledge and experience do whatever it take to help a colleague get the job done. Being a family owned and run company means family is central to our ethos.

How do you see HTS Spares in five or ten years?

I see us continuing to grow and go from good to great. In the past few years we have invested heavily as a company to help us reach the next level. We have a clear strategy for growth, which is built around the unique insights we have into the construction plant market. We have some really exciting developments in the pipeline.

and out of the loader’s cab, the MaxControl system provides the operator with a different view of the job in hand, allowing them to carry out tasks remotely and to repeat the process with maximum comfort. Being able to operate outside the cab provides a different angle of view, helping new and even less experienced operators in tight areas.

When lifting and carrying large loads, the use of MaxControl eliminates blind spots in front of the load and raises awareness of the surrounding environment. Being outside the cab also allows for faceto-face communication with colleagues on site, enabling faster organisation of the work.

Some two person jobs can now be achieved solo, such as loading a Bobcat loader onto a trailer with maximum precision and without the need to rely on an additional set of eyes. Tell us about the history, development and culture of Sleipner The name Sleipner comes from Norse mythology, where the eight-legged horse called Sleipnir was the trusted steed of the Norse god Odin. Sleipnir was said to be “the best horse amongst gods and men”, because it could carry twice the weight, at twice the speed of any other horse. Sleipner E-series is a modern-day version of that miraculous horse, with its eight wheels to carry heavy excavators and shovels.

Sleipner is made for moving and carrying, yet its roots are strongly in its honourable history. In 1996 an excavator operator, Ossi Kortesalmi, came up with his own smart solution for an excavator transport system. The first prototype of Sleipner was born. It was built for a 90-tonne excavator, and it was meant to last. It is still in use. Since the first years, the Sleipner product family has grown to provide solutions for excavators up to 570 tonnes and drills and bulldozers up to 130 tonnes.

Tell us about training or Continuous Professional Development Sleipner has a dedicated Training Manager, Karl Marlow, and recently developed variants of the Sleipner Simulator. Karl travels the globe carrying out training for new customers as well as refresher training along with the help of our simulators. Karl works with on-site training departments for our existing customers, allowing the mines, quarry and construction site teams to be constantly up to date with Sleipner training requirements.

What can a customer expect when they buy from Sleipner?

Both the Sleipner DB-series and E-series are unique products. The E-series was specifically designed by a former excavator operator who spent many hours in the cab thinking about how we could relocate the equipment safely and efficiently. And here we are with a phenomenal solution.

How do you see the plant industry and Sleipner developing postCOVID? The plant industry took a hard knock and can only strengthen with the ongoing need for large and small scale projects, with a few adaptations. I think there is still massive growth potential – thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Sleipner team we managed to handle the COVID situation quite well. We brought in some good deals and with the need for companies to find ways and means to save, Sleipner is the perfect solution to help companies bounce back.

What are the biggest technological developments you have seen and what do you envisage will be the future game changers?

Naturally the move to electric and automation is a massive game changer and who knows where we will be throughout the stages, but Sleipner is working hand in hand with its customers.

MEET CONRAD How long have you been in the industry?

I’ve been in the industry for just over 15 years.

What attracted you to the industry?

The equipment used and the vast array of people you get to meet along the way.

Tell us about the different aspects of your work I have always prided myself on being a hands-on salesperson and a team player, so I have been known to get my hands dirty when the team needs me to get stuck in.

What do you find most rewarding and most challenging in work?

The most rewarding is seeing customers’ faces when I introduce the Sleipner range to them and the moment when they say: “Why didn’t I think of that.” The most challenging is getting people to change their mindset.

And finally Who or what would you be in an alternative life?

Me. I would be me. It’s always easy to look at other people and say I wish I was him but its only easy until you must walk in their shoes.

Collier futureproofs plant with new Sandvik QE442e hybrid Collier Quarrying and Recycling is investing in a new hybrid scalper for its quarrying and recycling application in Fife. The first hybrid QE442 to be delivered in Scotland, it will give Collier the versatility to switch between dieselhydraulic and electric-hydraulic modes of operation, lowering running costs, mitigating rising fuel costs and playing its part in reducing the company’s carbon footprint.

A longstanding customer of Sandvik, Collier bought its first unit more than 15 years ago. It was the natural progression to move to a hybrid variant when updating its existing plant. The Hybrid “e” option, which is available on larger Sandvik tracked screening products, offers customers the flexibility to run in either a diesel mode or an electric plug-in mode of operation.

With versatility at its core, the unit will be used for different applications on

site. Sitting behind the stationary cone crusher, it will be processing aggregates and also independently for recycled aggregates. Fitted with 100 mm punch plate and 40 mm on the bottom, they are producing approx. 3,400 tonnes per day.

The QE442e Hybrid “e” variant is the largest in the heavy-duty range of mobile scalpers and features the same class leading characteristics as the standard model. Its heavy duty 5.5 x 1.75 m screen with high speed and aggressive throw is built for tough applications and can handle high volumes of infeed material. It offers the user-friendly two series screens, including an electrical control system that improves both operational effectiveness and machine safety.

In addition to the versatility and sustainability of the hybrid drive, the QE442e has many more features that result in higher uptime and lower cost of ownership. The fuel efficient Stage V engine brings maximum performance, reduced fuel consumption and lower environmental impact. The hydraulic system is optimised and reduced engine speed lowers fuel consumption, while a well-proportioned fuel tank maximises intervals between refuelling. There is also a 50% hydraulic fluid saving with extended service intervals from 2,000 to 4,000 hours.

Duncan Collier said: “With the hybrid unit, we benefit from more uptime. There are less moving parts and filters to replace during maintenance, so we are saving not just a vast amount in terms of fuel costs but also less downtime by not having to refuel and carry out the regular maintenance checks associated with diesel machinery.”

Another improvement on the latest 2-series model, is the two-speed tracking.

This significantly speeds up the time needed to move and relocate the machine within the quarry.

Spreading a little happiness Thwaites General Manager Sales, Andrew Sabin recently took a call from a farm owner in the Cotswolds called Pat. In one of his sheds he had rediscovered what he believed to be a Thwaites agricultural machine; if true, this could be one of the earliest machines the company had manufactured, the Thwaites Muck Spreader.

Andy was reliant on Pat’s

description alone, but during the call it became increasingly likely that this might be a historic find. From Pat’s description, the machine that fitted the bill was the agricultural machine of the day, the Thwaites Muck Spreader.

Thwaites, founded in 1937

by Basil Thwaites, manufactured those early agricultural machines in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire

and 85 years later, that original site remains the home of the company.

Driven by the war effort, agricultural manufacturing was in need of modernisation and an increase in output. In the early 1940s Thwaites successfully manufactured forage harvesters and muck spreaders, a decade before the launch of the very first site dumper in 1951.

get a call like this; I have worked at Thwaites for 21 years and apart from old photographs, I have never seen a muck spreader. So when I travelled over to meet Pat at his farm, it was with great interest and intrigue.”

Thwaites had agreed in principle that if the machine were of interest, they would acquire it by making a donation to the local Sue Ryder charity at the request of Pat, in memory of his late wife Muriel.

On arrival at the farm, set in the beautiful rural setting on the outskirts of Cheltenham, Pat greeted Andy and escorted him to the machine’s resting place.

Andy said: “It was clear that this was indeed a Thwaites Muck Spreader. While there was no plate or serial number, the design and flecks of red paint were enough to confirm that we had found one of the first machines ever manufactured

by Thwaites, here in the heart of the Cotswolds.”

Pat confirmed that he first remembered seeing the machine in the mid 1950s, soon after he inherited the farm and land from his late father. Thwaites was true to its word, arranging the payment to the charity in memory of Pat’s late wife to secure the machine.

The find was delightful, the owner charming and the cause worthy, so Thwaites did not want to sit on its laurels. What was the best and indeed the correct way to return the machine to its former glory?

Thwaites contacted construction and agricultural colleges in the area to ask whether renovating the machine might be of interest to their apprentices, and was delighted to find that interest was high. After consideration, Thwaites decided to partner with the newly founded and first industry co-funded and led construction school, AccXel, based in Cinderford, Gloucestershire, just 30 minutes’ drive from the find.

The college is a state-of-theart centre of excellence aimed at inspiring, training, and connecting people entering and advancing within the UK construction industry.

The college is co-funded by the government’s Getting Building Fund, awarded by Gloucestershire’s Local Enterprise Partnership, and the KW Bell Group. The college was founded by Nicola Bird who is third generation at KW Bell and the company’s Managing Director.

Superfan buys first JCB 56Z-2 in Northern Ireland A landfill and quarrying company has bought the first Stage V JCB 56Z-2 models in Northern Ireland.

Supplied by dealer Dennison JCB, the new midi excavator has been purchased

by Belfast-based Macwill Services. Owner Chris McLaughlin, a self-confessed JCB superfan who hosts his own YouTube channel – The JCB Club, chose the brand new machine for civil engineering duties and essential environmental projects within Macwill Services’ Belfast landfill site and family farm estate.

The new JCB Stage V 56Z-2 is powered by a 1.7-litre, turbocharged three-cylinder common-rail Perkins diesel engine, delivering 34 kW. Part

of the ‘Dash 2’ range of midi excavators, it is equipped with a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) so there is no requirement for a Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) such as AdBlue.

AUSA introduces new 3,000 kg dumper After completing the launch of its range of dumpers with payloads of 6 and 10 tonnes, AUSA is continuing to upgrade its equipment with the new D301AHG dumper, which has a 3,000 kg payload.

This is a completely new dumper, designed with the aim of delivering higher productivity and a better return on investment for the customer, as well as improved operational safety.

With the D301AHG, AUSA has upgraded its first mid-range dumper, perfectly suited to relatively large-scale construction works, whether for public works or quick earthworks in open spaces.

More productive The new dumper has been designed to achieve optimal productivity and with a heaped capacity of 1,742 litres, the new skip is 12% larger than the previous model. With this notable increase, AUSA is seeking to minimise the number of journeys the operator has to make, thus speeding up the completion of the works.

Calculating the return on investment is a crucial moment when it comes to choosing the right purchase, so basic elements have been prioritised to lower this outlay.

Firstly, the new design has angular lines to the rear, allowing large engine covers that can be easily reached on your feet without using any kind of step. All the regular maintenance components such as filters and fluid tanks have been arranged to make them fully accessible in this area. Additionally, the counterweight’s large central grille makes it possible to quickly access the cooler, making it easy to clean and remove.

It is also worth noting that the optimisation of the D301AHG dumper’s power-to-weight ratio ensures that fuel consumption is significantly lower than in the previous model.

Safer The three-tonne dumper includes safety features that make it a top performer in this regard. Hydrostatic transmission ensures smoother and safer operation, and a seat presence sensor and belt buckle sensor prevent the machine being started if recommended safety measures have not been taken. Additionally, it has an electronic negative brake, which is automatically engaged when the dumper’s engine is switched off to prevent any movement whatsoever.

Finally, the new D301AHG allterrain dumper has an extensive range of optional accessories, so the machine can be customised to meet each customer’s requirements. These include the AUSAnow fleet manager and lighting equipment.

First time for new Doosan products at Hillhead 2022 Doosan will be featuring a wide range of new products for the first time on the company’s Stand number Z4 at the Hillhead 2022 Exhibition. They include the latest versions of the company’s large crawler excavators from 36 to 53 t, the next generation of Doosan miniexcavators, the new DX100W-7 10 t wheeled excavator and a new range of compact wheel loaders. Alongside these, Doosan will show the latest DL-7 wheel loaders and articulated dump trucks for the quarrying, mining and construction industries.

Increased comfort and controllability A number of new standard and optional features are now available on several large Doosan crawler excavators, including the DX350LC-7, DX380LC-7, DX420LC-7, DX490LC-7 and DX530LC-7 models. The main changes are in the new cab, which takes operator comfort and ease of operation to the next level.

Standard features include: • Keyless start (Doosan Smart Key) and remote door lock/unlock, • Parallel wiper system covering a larger window area, • Operator ID/password functionality (setting operator authorisation to modify parameters), • Remote diagnostics functionality, • New heating and cooling seat (cooling optional), • DAB audio and hands-free call system, • 11 LED work lights as standard with two more optional, • Around View Monitor with 360° cameras (ultrasonic sensors optional).

The DX50Z-7 and DX55R-7 are powered by the Doosan D18 Stage V compliant diesel engine providing 36.4 kW at 2,200 RPM. As a result, all four models offer the highest power and torque in their respective classes and cover a wide range of applications including heavy duty work.

A novel platform design featuring new upper structures has increased durability/robustness and this is complemented in all four new miniexcavators by a larger working range than other equivalent machines on the market, coupled with higher lifting capacities and digging forces.

New high performance 10 tonne wheeled excavator The DX100W-7 10.7 t wheeled excavator makes its debut at Hillhead. The 10-tonne class is new to the Doosan range and the DX100W-7 offers a high performance solution for customers looking for a wheeled excavator primarily for urban and road maintenance applications.

The DX100W-7 offers the best compromise between compactness and agility, complemented by excellent productivity and high-end comfort. It is important that this type of machine can operate in restricted areas, so the DX100W-7 has the option of four-wheel steering and a crabbing mode.

As well as agility in confined spaces, the DX100W-7 offers the highest safety and specifications on the market. The integral 1.35 t counterweight ensures the highest stability for lifting work in combination with the articulated boom and long arm, which together provide a larger working range than other machines in this class, despite having similar boom and arm lengths. The counterweight also has a novel design, offering the best maintenance access in the industry, from the rear of the machine and from ground level.

The articulated boom ensures that the operator is able to position the machine as close as possible to trucks during loading.

In addition, the DX100W-7 offers maximised lifting capacities and digging forces, as well as satisfying a requirement in some countries for a wheeled excavator with a travelling height of under 4 m.

New compact wheel loaders Doosan has signed an exclusive supply agreement with Netherlands-based Tobroco-Giant, a leading manufacturer of compact wheel loaders for materials handling, construction, rental, agriculture and landscaping. It has been a rough time for the construction and demolition industry lately, with material costs increasing on what seems like a weekly basis.

New Bobcat products to appear at Hillhead 2022 New cab for remarkable operator experience Bobcat R-Series telehandlers feature a new cab designed around the operator for unmatched ease of use. A taste of Merlo

I had the great pleasure of accepting an invitation by Merlo UK to attend its greatly anticipated tour of its brand new training centre in Ringwood, Hampshire.

The itinerary looked something like this: welcome coffees and pastries, corporate presentation, parts warehouse tour and seeing a training session in action first-hand.

Since its launch in 1964 and to date, the Merlo Group remains a family run business based in Cuneo, Italy. The company employs around 1,600 people and in 2021 alone produced 7,200 machines, of which almost 80% were exported around the globe.

Merlo Group is a true manufacturer because of its investment in making all elements of the machine (other than the engines), from the glass in the windows to the plastics used and technology.

The centre was officially opened in December 2021 after an investment of £750,000 and Merlo UK is aiming to train around 300 students this year.

Shaun Groom, General Manager of Merlo UK, was kind enough to spend some time talking me through the new Eworker range, which is narrow enough to get through doorways and so perfect for operating in tight circumstances and indoors. The fully electric Eworker has a run time of around eight hours, so the stress of recharging the batteries on a day shift is reduced.

RM Contractors orders 11 Doosan DX-7 excavators

Redditch-based RM Contractors Ltd has placed an order for 11 new DX-7 medium-sized crawler excavators from Doosan. The order is being supplied by Doosan Authorised Dealer, T H WHITE Construction, based in Stourport-onSevern and comprises 10 DX140LC-7 14-t machines and a DX225LC-7 23-t crawler model.

New Doosan medium-sized excavators The DX140LC-7 and DX225LC-7 are part of Doosan’s new medium-sized DX-7 range of 17 Stage V crawler and wheeled excavator models from 14 to 25 tonnes. First Bobcat MaxControl remote control system in Spain

Obras y Construcciones Corbera, a construction and earthmoving company based in Corbera de Llobregat (Barcelona), is the first business in Spain and one of the first in Europe, to purchase Bobcat’s new MaxControl remote control system. MaxControl is an exclusive hardware kit from Bobcat, which, combined with an iOS application, allows the operator to control Bobcat compact loaders remotely, using an iPhone or iPad. Obras y Construcciones Corbera was introduced to the MaxControl system by Bobcat Of, the Authorised Bobcat Dealer for the area. The company was struck by

the versatility that this application could give them thanks to the total visibility of the working space that it offers and above all, the safety and security provided by this new way of working.

This has been particularly useful in some concrete projects as the peripheral vision of the work is considerably improved by being outside the machine.

MaxControl has allowed the company to carry out special jobs that require greater safety, working in confined spaces and with little visibility. The system also helps in demolition and in finishing new pavements, providing the company with more precise finishes and in less time.

MaxControl has provided greater reliability and precision when loading and unloading machines onto trailers for transfer to other sites. Obras y Construcciones Corbera is convinced that the system improves safety, a factor that is more and more important every day on the job site and offers direct benefits for both operators and employers alike.

In addition, it helps to avoid damage to machines through collisions with objects, since by being outside the loader the operator can better see where they are driving.

‘Like driving a remote-controlled car’ Eduard Heredia, Manager of Obras y Construcciones Corbera, said: “It’s fantastic, very easy to assemble, disassemble, and to use. It’s like driving a remote-controlled car, but always with great care. In just a few hours I had mastered the operation of the loader through my own iPhone – I would definitely highlight the safety aspects. The MaxControl system is very useful and versatile as I can use it with the bucket or with a variety of Bobcat attachments to carry out different tasks safely such as clearing with a brush or using a wheel saw.

Also, I only have a Bobcat tracked loader at the moment, but in the future I might buy a skid-steer model and I will be able to work with the MaxControl with both machines.”

Easy to install, all details on your mobile screen It is very easy to connect to the MaxControl system, the user simply puts the receiver on top of the loader’s cab and the emergency stop button on the back of the machine – both have a built-in magnet for quick placement. The engine cover can then be opened and the cables for the system hooked up to the machine’s diagnostic connector.

The next step is to download the MaxControl application on the mobile phone and once downloaded, the Bobcat dealer can give the customer access to the MaxControl kit. After these steps are

completed, the operator simply connects to the wi-fi system of the machine and can start operating it remotely.

Once installed, the operator can access the main machine information on the screen of the mobile or tablet, while the intuitive controls allow them to operate both the machine and attachments with ease. This allows errors to be easily identified thanks to the maintenance codes that appear directly on the mobile device. And machine diagnostics are available that communicate vital information about the carrier and access can be given to the machine to multiple end users, allowing for a quick change of operators.

Case study On a recent project using MaxControl, Obras y Construcciones Corbera filled an area of about 1,000 m3 under a school yard. Mounted on a Bobcat T590 track loader, the MaxControl was used to drive the machine remotely through a small opening and down an underground corridor to the filling area. Thanks to MaxControl, blind spots were eliminated, with full visibility and increased awareness of the surrounding environment at all times. The work was carried out in a couple of weeks with the T590, much

more quickly than it would have been by alternative methods using smaller machinery.

In remote areas with little connectivity, such as the underground passage, the system keeps the operator registered for 12 hours of operation and works at a range of up to 100 m.

As for the Bobcat T590 compact loader, it is ideal for tasks with very limited space thanks to its compact size, manoeuvrability, stability, power, breakout force and lifting capacity for handling the fill material. It combines this with high specifications, shorter cycles and faster turns.

With the launch of the HX160A L and the HX180A L, Hyundai Construction Equipment has introduced a further two EU Stage V compliant A-Series crawler excavators. These mid-weight machines are powered by the latest Cummins diesel engines, achieving Stage V emissions standards without the need for Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). With improved fuel consumption, the 16 and 18-tonne models deliver improved operating speed and performance, with increased visibility and safety.

Features include: • Cummins EU Stage V B4.5 diesel engine with 13% greater in power and 27% more torque than previous models, • Up to 5% improvement in fuel consumption in levelling and truck loading operations in P mode, • Particulate Matter (PM) reduction of 60% with no requirement for EGR, • New Lifting Mode with improved fine hydraulic control, using engine rpm reduction, power boost action and pump flow control, • Upgraded Electric Pump Independent Control (EPIC) optimises hydraulic pump flow rate and power to match the machine’s working conditions.

Total control The machines adopt Hyundai’s Electric Pump Independent Control (EPIC) system to make the most of the additional performance provided by the Cummins B4.5 diesel engine. Both excavators have a gross power output of 115 kW, with a robust 712 Nm peak torque available at just 1,200 rpm. Twin variable displacement hydraulic pumps deliver 160 L/m of flow, providing the HX160A L and HX180A L with increased productivity when compared to many competitor machines.

Improved control of the engine output and the hydraulic system has resulted in increased fuel efficiency, with the excavators achieving a 5% efficiency gain against the previous HX Series when levelling and truck loading in P Mode. By optimising the design of the main control valve and hydraulic hose routing, Hyundai has also minimised energy losses within the system.

A new Lifting Mode improves fine control and lift capability, reducing engine rpm, activating power boost and offering improved pump flow control.

The machines are also offered with an optional Fine Swing Control, smoothing

the movement of the boom at the start and stop of the swing movement. An Auto Safety Lock is offered as standard, preventing unintended operation of the hydraulic functions of the excavator.

The operator can set boom-lift speed compared to swing speed, by activating and deactivating the boom priority function. Dipper arm-in speed can also be fine tuned, by activating and deactivating the arm regeneration function. It is now possible to save machine settings through the new Key On Init work mode, to apply the settings on engine start-up. The

machine owner can also restrict operator access to some functions within the menu if required.

Individual customer requirements The HX160A L has an operating weight of 17,455 to 19,050 kg, while the HX180A L weighs in at 18,140 to 19,985 kg. Both models can be supplied with a range of track pads, from 500 to 700 mm, while the HX180A L can also be equipped with a low ground pressure 800 mm wide pad. A host of options allows full customisation of the excavators, with buyers able to specify Hyundai’s Advanced Around View Monitoring (AAVM) camera system for maximum visibility and safety on site. Customers can also choose a mirror view camera, helping the operator to cover visual blind spots to the right of the machine.

Operators can specify an optional Level 2 Falling Object Guard (FOG) for the cab and there are optional side protectors for the upper structure of the machine for use in tight conditions or in

more severe operating conditions. Other options include the provision for a threeway valve, for bucket/clamshell operation, an engine air intake pre-cleaner and an engine coolant pre-heater.

Increased precision The A Series cab provides a 13% increase in internal space for the operator, with an improved grab handle design in the cabin door, making it easier to access the driver’s seat and improving visibility to the side of the machine from the cab. There are also wider, anti-slip

steps for easier access to the cab and service areas.

The interior has an 8-inch capacitive-type touchscreen for all major information, which can also be controlled through an automotive-style jog/dial module. The excavators can be specified with optional proportional auxiliary controls in the Kawasaki joystick lever heads. Single pedal straight travel is also available.

Hyundai’s HX A Series excavators benefit from a host of state-of-the-art digital connectivity technologies. These

include the proven standard Hi-MATE remote management system, which delivers the highest level of service connectivity and remote diagnostic ability. The Mobile Fleet App has been updated to allow fleet owners easy access to machine operating data, including economical usage, utilisation and fault code recognition.

That Wi-Fi connectivity, using Miracast, allows the operator to use many of the functions of their smartphone, directly through the machine’s 8-inch infotainment screen. Drivers can operate

their phones hands-free, listen to music directly from their phone and use a number of internet-based applications through the Miracast system.

Reduced service cost The excavators have a revised cooling package layout that contributes to improved serviceability. Engine oil and oil filter change intervals have been extended from 500 to 800 hours, while the fuel filter and pre-filter intervals are now double, at 1,000 hours. This contributes to reduced service and maintenance costs and a cut in planned downtime, improving productivity and usage for the customer.

Optional Engine Connect Diagnostics (ECD), which is an integrated resource between Cummins and Hyundai, allows technicians and dealers to support customers with diagnostic reports and engine performance data. HCE-DT Air also allows the customer to connect wirelessly through a smartphone or laptop on site.

Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31 March 2022 saw the inaugural FutureWorx exhibition. The event promised to showcase the latest in technology and innovation for the construction industry with keynote speakers leading the way.

I left home at 6am to ensure I was there in time for doors opening at nine. During the three-hour drive, I encountered sun, snow, hail and rain – everything the UK has to offer. I would have been on time, however, if it wasn’t for the satnav taking me to the wrong gate.

As I entered the main building through double doors to pick up my Plantforce-sponsored lanyard, a mad rush of people milling between the halls gave a sense that this was going to be a good event. The main hall, to the right, hosted the likes of DataTag, Plantforce, Merlo, X-Watch and Spillard.

My first order of business was to see James Knight, Marketing Coordinator at Merlo. Merlo was showcasing its eworker generation of fully electric telehandlers.

If you were there, you will know that it was a rather cold and windy day. Despite that, I crossed the hall to see what was on show outside. Something caught my eye, so I went to the far left and saw that Safety Shield Global was there in force. Luke Hall-Newman was kind enough to spend 10 minutes with me, talking me through what was going on. Safety Shield Global in a joint demonstration with L Lynch Plant Hire were demonstrating their Collision Avoidance System using AI camera technology to identify the human form.

Back to the main entrance, the hall on the right hosted more exhibitors such as GKD, SiteZone Safety and SMT GB. This hall also led into the hall for the conference speakers. The exhibition hall was constantly packed, making trying to walk around and in between people tricky (gone are the days of social distancing).

I had my eyes set on having a word with Amy Law from GKD to hand her a copy of the March edition of Diggers LIVE. It’s been a few years since I last saw Amy and that was when she worked for PlantWorx.

What I love about exhibitions is being able to physically hand suppliers a printed copy of Diggers LIVE and talk about the elements that make it up, from contributors to advertisers, to high profile interviews and other relevant features.

All in all, I felt that FutureWorx was a great day. It hosted key suppliers leading the way for the future in our industry and has built great foundations for the future. I look forward to attending the show again.

Return of the jitters The BCLive contract award league table recorded nearly £5.8 bn in March, well ahead of the established £4 bn monthly benchmark. But it is the manner in which that impressive monthly total was achieved that is stirring familiar feelings of concern. Builders’ Conference CEO Neil Edwards looks back over a mixed month.

In the field of construction, highs follow lows and troughs follow peaks as sure as day follows night. But having faced down the double threat of Brexit and a global pandemic without breaking stride, it was starting to feel like the good times would last forever. They yet might. But alarm bells are ringing among the more skittish of industry watchers. The concern is that those jitters could prove contagious.

Such reaction is not surprising.

Despite the resilience shown during the Brexit countdown and the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting lockdowns, the sector has been pounded with a host of new challenges. The skills shortage shows no signs of abating, materials prices are rising with no apparent ceiling in sight, and energy costs are the water cooler topic du jour.

For a time, it looked as if the industry was planning to push aside those obstacles. In the first 10 days of March, the BCLive league table recorded more than £3.3 bn in new contract awards.

The final two thirds of the month told a very different story. First there was the realisation that the war in Ukraine was not just a flash in the pan. Then came the Chancellor’s Spring Statement, which brought comfort to few and concern to many. And then the month ended with the removal of the subsidy on the red diesel that has fuelled the sector for some 60 years. New contract awards slowed, ending the month more than 33% down on the £8.6bn recorded in the same month last year and down on the £6.2bn posted in the preceding short month of February.

Top of the tree in March 2022 was Mace, which collected three new contract awards with a combined value of £725m.

The largest of these is the construction of a new eight/nine storey tower block comprising 30 new dwellings at Audley Square House in Westminster for client Caudwell Properties. That development will also include a swimming pool, gymnasium and roof terraces together with hard and soft landscaping and vehicular access to Waverton Street.

In second place – but £400m behind Mace – was Sisk Group, which picked up a single contract valued at £325m. The project is a repair and refurbish framework at Dublin Airport that will include the upgrading of pavements, drainage and electrical systems at the boarding gate piers, aircraft stands, aprons and taxiways.

Willmott Dixon secured eight new contract awards worth a total of £311m to take the third position on the BCLive league table for March 2022. The largest of these is a transport hub new build alongside the A6 and Mersey Square in Stockport, part of the Pagabo major works framework.

Skanska claimed the number four spot with a pair of new contract awards valued at a combined £242m. The most notable of these is a £235m newbuild green office scheme at Victoria Street in Westminster on the site of the former House of Fraser store. The new 43,700 m2 building will provide commercial office space over 16 floors, with retail space at ground level.

According to client Welput, the new tower will be the “UK’s largest all-electric, net zero office building”.

Bowmer and Kirkland notched up an admirable £187m split across six new contract awards to claim the fifth position.

The most notable of these is a £60m new office build; the first phase in a £200m development that will transform the former police headquarters at St Michaels in Southmill Street in Manchester.

Regionally, London retained the crown as the busiest and most lucrative area with 131 new contract awards valued at more than £2.1bn. The north-west enjoyed a welcome upturn in activity (£618m) while the south-west also saw an uptick to £485m. The east and West Midlands – until recently buoyed by HS2 and the Commonwealth Games – slipped back to £105m and £253m respectively while Scotland also slipped to £275 million.

Housing, predictably, contributed the lion’s share of activity during the month with 161 new contract awards valued at a combined £1.87bn. Offices enjoyed an excellent month, climbing to £1.08bn split across 62 individual projects. The education sector added a further £567m, while health and welfare produced a further £447m.

It is far too early to utter the dread word “downturn”, but the spider senses of industry economists will have surely tingled in that old, familiar way. And if history has taught us anything, it is that perceived concern can quickly become real concern; that the merest mention of the word downturn can spark a downturn in industry sentiment and ultimately, in industry output.

The hope now is that this is merely a blip; a pothole on a road that is still pointing onwards and upwards. The BCLive league table figures for the next few months will make for interesting and vital viewing.
