WELCOME Welcome to the 10th issue of Diggers LIVE. Almost a year and a half has passed since we reformed the construction equipment magazine landscape, producing this positive, pertinent and rather different publication. We have now reached double figures and it’s all systems go to get to triple.

So, where do we go from here? Well, it is no secret that we are part of a British publishing company and the overwhelming majority of our site visits, case studies and interviews have been held within the British Isles.

That’s all well and good and the majority of that will continue. Our new goal, however, is to slowly infiltrate the global marketplace, bringing you product launches, technology, news and just about anything else of interest to you that we may not get in Blighty.

How will we achieve this? Through existing partnerships such as with World of Concrete (see review on page 34) and our recently achieved gold level official publication status with the Association of Equipment Manufacturers’ CONEXPO-CON/AGG (read more on page 38). Both these events are over in North America. We will be attending bauma in Munich this October. And our relationship with the National Demolition Association means that within 48 hours of writing this I will be on a plane to California as a guest at Demolition San Diego.

One of the highlights of this will be the live DEMOlition showcase, where various manufacturers will be demonstrating some fantastic demolition-focused construction equipment. Just this week, I have been invited to Merlo Group’s Global HQ and production facility in Cuneo, north-west Italy in mid April, which I have duly accepted. In a nutshell our organically grown global presence has allowed us to take that opportunity and run with it and become a truly international publication.

It is all about our commitment to you the reader to bring you the very best from Britain and now the world, to never rest on our laurels and to continue to be the printed magazine you want to receive every other month knowing we are committed to this fantastic industry and you.

Dragon pairs with Boss Plant Sales Engineering innovator Dragon Equipment announced the appointment of Boss Plant Sales Ltd as its official dealer for London and the south-east of England at the Executive Hire Show in February.

Dressta adds muscle to global management team with heavyweight appointment Dressta, the world renowned, full-line dozer manufacturer has strengthened its sales capability with a heavyweight appointment. Bartosz Kozik joins the LiuGong Dressta Machinery team as Global Dressta Sales Director with full commercial responsibility for developing and implementing Dressta’s global sales strategy and managing and expanding its sales and distribution channels.

Council invests in JCB Pothole Pro Coventry City Council has become the latest local authority to invest in a JCB Pothole Pro following a successful trial of the rapid road repairer.

The machine was put through its paces by the council last summer when it repaired more than 100m2 of road in just two hours – an area the council says would take four days to fix using traditional methods. The authority was so impressed that it has now bought its own machine to help maintain more than 550

miles of road. Its first job was to repair a 40-metre, one-metre-wide stretch of road in The Hiron, Cheylesmore, Coventry – a task completed in an hour, compared to a whole day using established techniques.

It follows the news that Stoke-onTrent City Council – the first authority in the UK to invest in a JCB Pothole Pro – has repaired a staggering 10,000m² of road in just over four months. Using traditional methods, this task would have taken almost three years.

Coventry City Councillor Richard Brown, Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “This is a solid investment in an impressive machine. It is a game changer and is a great example of how we are using innovation in the way we provide services.”

Councillor Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services at Coventry City Council, said: “We’ve almost 900 kilometres of road to look after, so anything that can speed up the process of repair and maintenance and save money is a win-win. The highways team are really pleased about the way it is working.”

The development of the JCB Pothole Pro has been led by JCB Chairman Lord Bamford. He said: “I’m delighted that Coventry City Council is joining other authorities across the UK in investing in the JCB Pothole Pro, which is exceeding expectations with its speed and productivity.”

Tests with local authorities and contractors show the JCB Pothole Pro completes a permanent pothole repair in under eight minutes – that’s equivalent to up to 250m2 a day or 700 potholes a month.

UK construction equipment sales show 48% increase in 2021 Retail sales of construction and earthmoving equipment maintained their strength in the final quarter of 2021 and showed an increase of just under 18% compared with Q4 2020.

As a result, sales for the whole of 2021 finished the year at 48% above 2020 levels, reaching more than 36,000 units for the equipment types covered in the construction equipment statistics exchange.

This means that sales last year exceeded the levels reached in 2018 and 2019, which were reported as being peak levels for the industry since before the financial crash in the decade before.

This is consistent with comments from many CEA members, who have been saying that 2021 was a record year in recent times for product sales.

The pattern of sales for the major equipment types in 2021 compared with 2020 are shown in the chart attached.

This shows the percentage increases year on year, ranked from the highest to the lowest, with absolute sales below.

Telehandlers (for the construction industry) saw the strongest growth, with sales reaching more than double the 2020 levels. In contrast, the weakest

sales were experienced by mini/midi excavators (up to 10 tonnes), with the rate of increase falling back to 33% in 2021, after being the strongest growing product in the previous year.

The construction equipment statistics exchange covers sales on a regional basis in the UK. The map shows the percentage differences for sales in the main regions in 2021 compared with the previous year. Sales were the strongest in the north-west and north-east of England, at over 75% above 2020 levels. In contrast, the

weakest sales were experienced in the West Midlands, at only 15% above the previous year’s levels.

The construction equipment statistics exchange is run by Systematics International Ltd. This scheme is run in partnership with the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), the UK trade association.

Bearded Excavation The story so far My name is Lloyd Peckham, but on social media I’m better known as Bearded Excavation.

My dad was a site engineer and he worked on various projects, including the Channel Tunnel. My mum would take me to see him at work and I was obsessed with the machinery. Her dad was an owner-driver for a concrete company called ARC. He had two Ford Cargo mixer lorries and I’d go out with him on his rounds.

My dad’s dad had a farm, in Findon,

West Sussex. He had quads, tractors and small plant, so I was always around some sort of machinery. I’d sit on my dad or grandad’s lap and drive around the farm. Every chance I had, I was straight on a digger.

The first machines I ever drove were a Fiat Hitachi EX90 and a JCB 3C Mk 2. I’d be in the little three-tonne machine trying to repair the lanes through the woods and the roads up to the farm and would also make tracks and jumps for the quads.

Fast forward to when I was 17. I left school and went to college to study carpentry for three years, ending up with an NVQ Level 3. In the summer of my

second year, I worked for a small builder.

I’d always dig the extensions because I just wanted to be on a machine.

I finished college and that was it for carpentry. I started working for a small groundworks company called Bersco. They showed me how to dig footings properly and use the machine correctly. We did all aspects of groundworks, installing cesspit tanks, deep drainage, slabbing, driveways – pretty much everything. They operated a mixture of Takeuchis and Komatsus from 0.9 tonnes up to 13 tonnes. Using breakers and augers, this was my first time using any sort of attachment.

As work started to dry up I managed to get a job at Rabbits Skips in Lancing, a recycling yard for general skip waste. They had two Liebherrs, two Doosan loading shovels and a Doosan rubber duck. My job here was to operate a Liebherr 924 waste handler with a selector grab. I loaded a massive CBI shredder, which fed into a fuel store for an incinerator that supplied the National Grid.

The first time I got in the 924 and put the cab right up in the air it was a bit daunting but I got used to it. It was a nice piece of machinery to operate and comfortable to boot.

When the 924 was out of action, I was let loose in the Doosan 300 loading shovel. This was the first time I’d used a loading shovel and it was quite enjoyable really. They showed me how to load the lorries with the aggregates using the loading shovel.

Eventually, I got fed up with the shift patterns so I emailed a company called Penfold Verrall. They did muck shifts and land restoration on tips. A few months went by, I got a call from them and started the following week.

The plant manager showed me to the machine I was to use – a Hitachi ZX2506. This was the biggest tracked machine I’d been in. I had to just turn piles over to get the air into them to dry them out ready to place on the restorations.

The other machines on the job were a Hitachi ZX210-6, Liebherr 734, Komatsu D65PX, Caterpillar D6T and Volvo A25 and A30 ADTs. I was keen to have a go in all of them so I asked the plant manager and he said: “It’s just a big boys playground, go and have a go.”

I went in the ADTs first as there wasn’t much to them. But the dozers were a different story. I asked the lads to show me around and then they just left me to it. Whenever I could, I’d jump in a dozer and ended up spending weeks at a time in them.

Sean graduated with a BA in geography and economics from Queens University, Belfast. He started his career in 1990 with Brown Lenox Kue Ken crushers and later moved to Svedala (now Sandvik).

Here he was involved in the growth of wheeled and later tracked crushing and screening plants on demolition and recycling sites.

It was here that he recognised a gap in the materials processing industry for crushing and screening attachments. In 1996 he set up Worsley Plant, which has since grown to become one of the UK’s leading providers of materials processing equipment to the recycling, demolition, construction, and waste management industries. Today the company prides itself in being the UK’s leading attachment specialist.

What is it about your role that attracts you?

Q I have some amazing customers in the demolition, waste, recycling and groundworks industry. The straight talkers are always good as you

know exactly where you stand. I can’t solve world peace or cure cancer but I can offer a high level of service in the attachment industry.

I enjoy revisiting customers who have invested in our kit and hearing their stories on how their investment has helped grow their business. Having been in this industry for 32 years I have seen a lot of changes but still get a buzz from the cut and thrust of the deals.

Skills required to do this job include social worker, money lender, politician, lottery winner, referee, judge and jury, debt collector, gambler, in built sat nav, detective, agony aunt and rocket scientist.

But most importantly, using my two ears.

How do you think your colleagues see you (or you would like Q them to)?

I hope the team at Worsley Plant see that I like to get stuck in and

that I’m a people person who is committed and persistent to the job.

While they know that I’m often out on the road meeting customers, they realise I’m not afraid to get involved in all aspects of the company. I like to think they see me as approachable and am always happy to share my experience, good and bad to help my colleagues develop their knowledge of the industry and our products. I believe we learn more when things for wrong. My mother taught me the power of treating others how we would like to be treated ourselves.

Tell us about Worsley Plant Q Worsley Plant began in 1996 selling a very simple screen called the Viper

Mini Sizer, now McCloskey. In 1997 we moved into screen hire and later crusher hire. This expanded into contract crushing in the quarry industry with 50 bits of kit. In 2004 we took on MB and later in 2007 we added Rotar and Remu. That was the year we left contract crushing and committed to attachments.

We have never looked back. We added Lehnhoff, Montabert breakers and Dynaset magnets and pumps. Supplier relationships are like a marriage. You have your ups and downs. But if you are committed, you are in it for the long term.

Tell us about the range of products Q you provide We started out offering crushing and screening buckets from MB. Now the fourth generation of this technology is available for machines ranging from 2.8 to 70 tonnes. The commercial

and environmental benefits of on-site recycling are now an established fact, plus the savings in transportation costs of importing aggregate on to a project are potentially considerable.

For many, the logistics and costs involved in bringing a static crushing machine onto a compact site are not feasible. On jobs where there’s already going to be an excavator present it makes perfect sense to use a crushing bucket and we quickly found a receptive audience for the MB products. It’s the cost per tonne that is a key consideration for many companies, and if they can use one machine to produce all that you need on site, a crushing bucket becomes a very viable solution.

In 2007, we added Remu Screening Buckets to our range, which help contractors save time and money both before and after the crushing process on site, improving the quality of recycled materials.

All models of screening bucket are excavator-friendly and, thanks to their

hydraulic system, virtually impossible to block. They screen material that other products won’t, and will work all year round. REMU screening buckets are ideal for a wide range of applications including topsoil cleaning, composting, backfilling and pipeline cover.

The Crossover Bucket (XO) is the newest addition to their screening bucket technology. One bucket frame with multiple work modules, enabling a quick transition between different jobs.

It’s perfect if you process several different materials. Work modules available include a blade screen, screener crusher, vibrating screen and concrete mixer.

In 2011, we became the exclusive UK distributor for the Dutch-built Rotar brand, which includes a wide range of attachments for the demolition industry. Their range of pulverisers, shears and grabs are ideal for both primary and secondary demolition.

The Rotar Concrete Cutter is the latest addition to that range and brings new technology to the sector. Powered

by a Ramplifier installed inside the cylinder rod, it more than doubles the pressure from 350 bar to as high as 700 bar. That makes it the perfect weapon in heavy industrial demolition, where thick reinforced concrete is in evidence.

In 2013, we expanded our offering with the addition of the Lehnhoff Variolock Quickcoupler range. The fully automatic system allows for the changing of attachments in under 15 seconds from the safety of the cab and is particularly well-suited to demolition applications, where an operator is required to switch between grab, shear or breaker on a regular basis. It is also useful on jobs where space is tight, as it can reduce the number of excavators required and replace them with just one multi-tasking machine.

Made in Germany, Lehnhoff’s quickcouplers offer higher oil flows than many of its competitors. Due to larger valves, the Lehnhoff operates at lower temperatures, has reduced fuel consumption, less wear and tear on the equipment and less hose damage. The Lehnhoff allows an operator to use the right attachment for the job, thereby reducing the potential for misuse of equipment, damage and downtime.

We added MB Drum Cutters to our range in early 2018. These are suitable for concrete wall and surface profiling, trenching, rock excavation, demolition and dredging and for any use in urban areas and also on restricted jobsites.

We also added Dynaset magnets to our range that year. The DYNASET HMAG PRO Hydraulic Magnet converts the hydraulic power of a mobile machine into powerful magnetising power. Bobcat – the great leap forward Daniele Paciotti, EMEA Product Line Director Attachments at Bobcat describes some of the innovations the company is bringing to market

In recent years, MiniExcavators (MEX) have developed into real tool carriers. This is thanks to the application of new technology and improved machine stability due to new designs and a better centre of gravity.

At Bobcat attachments, we are always working on new solutions to meet the needs of MEX customers.

For example, we have recently put more focus on developing our depth check and laser system to support the operator in completing trenching works and to make jobs more efficient.

As a result, Bobcat is proud to announce the updated depth check system. This system uses three strategically placed sensors to accurately achieve or sustain the desired grade depth, working from the cab.

The depth check system is fully integrated with the Bobcat panels and display, which offers simple operation and eliminates the need for an add-on monitor inside the cab. This simple, durable kit is wired in, so job conditions or the lack of a wireless signal never interfere with digging accuracy, and with no batteries to replace, also remove inconvenient lag time.

The Bobcat depth check system is also compatible with the laser receiver, so the operator can ‘bench’ on a laser signal to create slope, or to sustain a grade in multiple

locations on a jobsite, which increases flexibility.

Bobcat is also offering new flail mower and plate compactor attachments for MEX. The flail mower has a number of unique features such as the 12-second drum stop after the power is switched off; no need to drain lines as this is integrated in the attachments; a self-levelling system for following the ground surface as a standard feature; and the best balanced motor design in order to cut the grass while travelling.

The compaction plate attachment is a great tool to maximise compaction, even where workers cannot go with classic compaction plates, thanks to the great reach of the mini-excavator in all these conditions.

Coupling technology Coupling technology is not moving as fast as machine or attachment technology but is concentrated increasingly on safety features to make the jobsite safer and to avoid potential accidents.

One development I see expanding in this area is hydraulic quick solutions, which reduce time connecting hoses when changing attachments and avoid operatives needing to get in and out of the cab.

Increased demand Commodity attachments like buckets, couplers or breakers are always the most requested, probably because the construction and demolition industry is growing thanks to government subsidies, but we also see growth in hydraulic clamp, flail mowers and augers due to growth in cleaning and landscaping work.

Coming soon Our attachments team will continue to create solutions to meet market requirements. The biggest innovations will come because of three fundamental things: automation, digitalisation and recognition. At Bobcat we are working hard on our long-term plan to bring more integrated, easy to use solutions to the market.

Toku Although not very well known compared to more mainstream hammers, Yarwoods has been selling and running the Japanese designed and built Toku hammers for decades.

The pneumatic chamber design and the fact that it only has two moving parts mean that the customer very rarely needs to top the hammer up with gas as well as giving them the confidence that it has no fancy additional parts that might prove difficult to repair.

Area Manager Mark Gardiner says: “We currently run a plethora of Toku hammers in our hire fleet, from 85 kg right up to 3,600 kg. They are super robust, very easy to maintain or repair and more often than not have a higher overall weight designed for that carrier size in comparison to other European designed hammers.”

Approved Hydraulics started 34 years ago as Geoff Hindle (a man with a van), focusing on repairs and service work to the hydraulic industry. The work covered everything under the hydraulics banner but was focused more towards the truck hydraulic industry – lorry cranes, skip loaders, hook lifts etc.

Over the years the company has changed and evolved to move into new areas. As the repair business became less sustainable due to a lack of engineers and longer free service contracts from equipment manufacturers, the company decided to move into more of a sales role, using the years of hands-on experience to ensure customers would not only receive the correct parts for the job, but also the backup and knowledge support on how to fit and install components and larger equipment correctly.

The company has always been based around Manchester, covering the northwest as a service and repair company.

However, as the company moved into sales, we now cover all the UK and Ireland and more frequently export to Europe and the rest of the world.

Due to the pandemic we have moved to a working at home basis, which has allowed us to employ

salesmen in Ireland and Yorkshire to join the team.

Autonomous vehicles are back on the radar, you only need to look at Volvo construction. They are making great strides in this and some of their product range could achieve more efficient and greater production.

Remote control is another innovation.

There are many test pilots, especially Komatsu with its huge bucket excavator, which can be operated from an office miles away using remote uplink, as easy

old or new technology. I strive to support the customer as well as I can and when possible, try to influence them with a different technology or product that could deliver efficiency gains.

I enjoy getting out and speaking to different manufacturers across the offhighway market and creating a strong partnership that involves our customers, then into their machine/products, I feel they drive our business.

Which parts of work do you find Q most challenging?

The most challenging aspect of the

workplace has been coming out of the pandemic and parts of the economic climate of transportation and component shortages. It’s extremely boring but it’s a necessary evil. The great thing is, as I’m a key account, I’m the one constantly communicating between both organisations, I take this responsibility very seriously and this approach is in our DNA whether supplying small manufacturers or OEMs in the offhighway segment.

for the 400/800V dielectric strength to meet the higher voltage, and we wanted to make it compatible with future infrastructure and software. For example, the market expectation is to be able to charge a vehicle quickly, which needs to be anticipated with DC charging.

A primary vehicle interface box (VIB) controls secondary BMS units in each battery module, balancing the current flow from each one. If you connect more battery packs you can use higher rates as we route the control through the VIB, which acts as master BMS as one interface to the vehicle with the connector for DC charging and a power distribution unit.

Using this can increase the charge and discharge rate.

An 800V system would use two or four packs for trucks with up to 100 kW. Putting up to 10 packs together provides

300 kW of power with a peak of 460 kW. Cooling is a key issue at 800V, so the modules use aluminium cooling plates on the bottom of each of two layers of packs inside the modules.

That avoids having to use liquid cooling within the pack so there is no risk of coolant leaking.

You need to connect external thermal management from the vehicle manufacturer, and there we specify the pressure and temperature but we also offer a standard product, the electric battery thermal management system, which we designed for our batteries.

A highly productive event World of Concrete, Informa Markets’ premiere exhibition serving the thriving construction and masonry industries, concluded the event’s 47th annual event held on 17-20 January at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC).

Convening close to 37,000 registered professionals, the consistent footfall in the expo halls, high engagement with educational offerings and overall vibrance underscores the industry’s critical need for in-person connection.

World of Concrete took over more than 58,000 square metres of the expansive and newly expanded LVCC, hosting over 1,100 industry leading suppliers in the expo hall, just over 150 of which were first-time exhibitors, offering attendees a wide range of brands to explore from the most sought-after global enterprises to niche SMEs spanning a variety of applications.

Published on the front page of the Las Vegas Review-Journal for its exciting and action-packed competition, the 2022 edition of the ever-exciting SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500® World Championship crowned Mason Cole Stamper as the “World’s Best Bricklayer,” along with his mason tender, Jeff Becker.

The two took home top honours and bragging rights, in addition to a new Ford F250 4x4 truck and more than £7,000 in cash and prizes. Scott Tuttle and mason tender Brian Tuttle locked in the second most coveted award at the event, the SPEC MIX TOP CRAFTSMAN, laying 730 bricks in one hour. Their remarkable effort won the Tuttles a new Kubota RTV-X1140, plus more than £7,000 in cash and prizes.

New this year and central to World of Concrete’s core values, the exhibition organisers formalised the event’s commitment to sustainability in collaboration with renewable energy partner/sponsor HILTI. The programme was intentionally executed with three objectives: Inspiring Sustainable Development, Environmental Responsibility, and Social Responsibility – each pledge supporting the event’s commitment to shaping the concrete industry for a sustainable future. Thanks to HILTI’s Renewable Electricity sponsorship, World of Concrete’s electricity use is powered by sustainable and renewable energy sources, saving an estimated 204 tonnes of CO2.

After a two-year hiatus from the full winter razmataz in Las Vegas, World of Concrete returned to its regular slot at the start of the year at the Las Vegas Convention Center in January and we were right there in amongst the action for the full four days.

As an aside, this was my first trip out of the UK since we all learned the word coronavirus. In fact the last plane journeys I had taken were the flights to and from the 2020 World of Concrete event.

I don’t know if it was the two-year absence or an overdose of wanderlust, but for my money this was the very best WoC show yet.

You get a fantastic mix of characters in Vegas, even before you reach the Convention Center. Upon entering the aptly named Paradise Boulevard, you are guaranteed an extremely warm welcome, with helpful staff giving detailed directions around the gargantuan exhibition centre to this lost Englishman.

Mind you, it was only on day three that we discovered the Tesla express – a series of brand new Teslas with gullwing doors offering you a trip through psychedelic tunnels lit up in all manner of fluorescent colours.

I was there with my construction equipment and machinery hat on representing Diggers LIVE, once again International Affiliates for the event. One of the best experiences for me, was that I was able to chat with the North American arms of companies that I deal with in the UK and Europe. These included attachment manufacturer MB Crusher; Chinese excavator giant LuiGong; German-Swiss multi-sector behemoth Liebherr; Barcelona-based dumper, forklift and telehandler manufacturer AUSA; WoC live-streaming leaders Bobcat and many more.

Unlike some of my Vegas footage, which has thankfully been lost after an evening partying in the desert, we did manage to hold onto the important

pictures and video from the LVCC. These offer enjoyable evidence of the event, of which much can be found on our socials.

There really was so much more to the event – pertinent demonstrations, networking, product launches and talks that were relevant to construction as well as concrete. The camera lens or this repurposed salesman’s patter just don’t do it justice. You really have to be there.

A few pointers. Day one was absolutely rammed an hour after opening. I was at Bauma in 2019 and that seemed heavy on the footfall but it had nothing on this, so my advice would be to get there early, and by early I mean 9:30am on the dot. You could even avoid day one entirely if there is nothing pressing that you would miss on later days as the crowd died down. But then you’d be missing an entire day and you probably need them all to get around.

Having said that, even on day one after the queuing you could easily navigate to the stands and demos you’d planned to see and others that captivated you on your way. Luckily for me I had a press pass, meaning I had access to the comforts of the press lounge to recharge and avoid the crowds.

World of Concrete is a thoroughly enjoyable event. Two days normally about does us for content, but we went for a third as it was just so good. Our socials went through the roof with the viral content we were able to capture and share.

Rest assured you will be speaking all things construction and concrete at the tables later in the evening. The WoC-ers really do take over sin city, and I am certainly one of them.

Doosan displays at World of Concrete For the first time at an international trade exhibition, Doosan showed the company’s new DX140LCR-7 crawler excavator and DL250-7 wheel loader together

DX140LCR-7 crawler excavator Part of Doosan’s new generation DX-7 family of medium-sized Stage V compliant crawler excavators, the 15.6-tonne DX140LCR-7 is a reduced tail swing model, allowing operators greater flexibility where space is at a premium, without sacrificing performance.

The DX140LCR-7 also offers a new counterweight design that provides enhanced service accessibility.

The DX140LCR-7 is powered by the Doosan D34 4-cylinder Stage V diesel engine providing 86 kW at 2,000 RPM. The enhanced fuel efficiency of the engine, in combination with a new hydraulic main valve and the new generation SPC3 Smart Power Controls, provides increased fuel savings compared to the previous generation machine.

The state-of-the-art cab on the DX140LCR-7 excels in terms of spaciousness and ergonomics, taking operator comfort and ease of operation to new levels. As well as a new high quality seat, the enhanced cab offers more features as standard than other machines on the market, ensuring super controllability and high precision in all applications.

The DX140LCR-7 excavator uses a new smart hydraulic system that offers an improvement of around 30% in attachment work compared to the previous generation model. There is a new Tiltrotator Mode on the control panel in the new excavator, which can be selected to ensure an optimised

hydraulic flow and helps to maximise the accuracy of tiltrotator work by eliminating back pressure.

Another standard new feature is the Fine Swing function. This minimises the shaking that a lifted object undergoes at the start or stop of a swing movement, to increase the safety of nearby workers and prevent damage caused by the object falling from the excavator.

The new excavator also incorporates as standard a new lifting eye that forms part of the casting for the push link for the bucket attachment at the end of the arm.

DL250-7 wheel loader With a standard bucket capacity of 2.5 m3, the new DL250-7 wheel loader is part of Doosan’s new DL-7 wheel loader range.

Like all DL-7 models, the DL250-7 introduces a next generation design, incorporating a powerful new Stage V compliant engine and providing higher productivity, increased fuel efficiency and a low cost of ownership, coupled with a superb environment and experience for the operator.

Power is provided by the new Doosan DL06V Stage V 6-cylinder engine on the

DL250-7 wheel loader, with an output of 128 kW. The LIS (Load Isolation System) on the DL250-7 provides a smoother ride and higher comfort for the operator, as well as higher productivity due to improved stability when the wheel loader is moving. The lift arm is cushioned by a hydro-pneumatic accumulator linked to the lift hydraulic system, acting as a shock absorber. The benefits include reduced cycle times, higher performance and better fuel efficiency while carrying out load and carry applications. Improvements have

been made throughout the powertrain, to provide operators with an 11% increase in travel speeds up to a maximum of 25 mph.

The new cab offers a greatly improved field of vision for the operator, with blind spots around the cab minimised and a 14% larger glass window area compared to the previous DL-5 model.

Inside the cab, the new wheel loader offers significantly enhanced operating comfort, an enhanced steering system and advanced electronic controls. Using the new Doosan Smart Key system on the control panel in the cab, the operator can start the machine using a keyless device, helping to prevent machine theft.

The Smart Key system provides remote door control, door lock and unlock, door release, searching and other functions.

The new EMCV (Electric Main Control Valve) joystick fully integrated in the armrest is another standard feature in the cab, providing the operator with smoother and precise controllability of the lift arm and attachments on the wheel loader. Features available via the EMCV system include Automatic Returnto-Dig, Bucket Tilt Kick-out and the Bucket Crowd Stop position and shock prevention for higher operator comfort.

DoosanCONNECT Telematics System The new DX140LCR-7 and DL250-7 are both factory-installed as standard with Doosan’s state-of-theart DoosanCONNECT wireless fleet monitoring system.

The DoosanCONNECT system offers a web-based fleet management solution which is very useful for monitoring the performance and security of machines and promoting preventative maintenance.

It is available as a standard feature on all new Doosan excavators (from 14 tonne), all new Doosan wheel loaders and Doosan articulated dump trucks.

The future is nigh New programme details have been revealed for the UK’s upcoming Futureworx event and conference, which is taking place at the East of England Arena in Peterborough on 30 and 31 March.

The CEA has formed partnerships with National Highways, HS2, the Supply Chain Sustainability School and COMIT2Drones to deliver the event, and plans are well underway to showcase the latest in technology and cutting edge innovations to make the workplace safer, smarter and more sustainable, as we head down the road to net-zero.

The event will focus on telematics, the connected site, GPS systems, safety systems and advances in autonomous and electric and hydrogen machinery.

The show aims to highlight sustainability, productivity and advances in future fuels such as hydrogen, electric and HVO. Companies that have committed to the event include Hitachi Construction Machinery, which will be showcasing its CTFleet Link. A brand new and complete fleet management solution, the telematics system allows customers to access a live

online portal through which they can monitor not only the performance and location of their Hitachi equipment, from ZX-5 through to the latest ZX-7 excavators, but also that of other manufacturers in their fleet. Hitachi will be demonstrating this system at the event.

Komatsu Europe International will be showcasing remote controlled machine technology equipped with integrated machine control.

Site safety and people-plant interface management is a common theme among exhibitors.

Spillard Safety Systems is showing human detection systems and video telematics, while Xwatch Safety Solutions is demonstrating a new conceptual safety system – although details of this are under wraps until the event.

Integrated machine control experts, GKD Technologies has also confirmed its presence at the show, as has FTC, which is a specialist in safety control and energyefficient products.

Safety Shield Global will be in attendance and is demonstrating its semi-autonomous plant and AI collision avoidance system.

Plantforce Rentals is bringing the latest hybrid and semi-autonomous machines from Kobelco, in addition to bringing its state-of-the-art simulator to promote advanced operator training. The company will also be linking live to a connected site.

Other companies using Futureworx as a platform to showcase new and innovative technologies are SMT GB (Volvo), which will be featuring its electric offerings in addition to showing its dig assist and load assist, and Merlo, which will be showing the future of electric telehandlers.

Alongside them, Snorkel will be exhibiting at the show. The company will present its next generation of lithiumpowered access platforms and will also reveal details of a concept machine.

Danfos Scotland will be showing delegates the technology to gain energy efficiencies and enhanced electrification.

Bomag is planning on demonstrating semi-autonomous equipment equipped with obstacle detection and data collection systems, all of which are on the path to the ultimate solution, ROBOMAG – a fully autonomous tandem roller.

Onwave, a company providing connectivity solutions for the construction sector and currently supporting more than 1,200 projects across the UK and Europe, has signed up. Onwave develops digital technology and has a solution called OWL that helps reduce buried service strikes and people/plant interface risk.

Hydrogen lighting will be presented by Taylor Construction Plant, and Prolectric will be showing off solar powered lighting.

The conference programme takes place on day two, 31 March, and speakers from Hexagon, Skanska, Costain, MachineMax have all been confirmed.

The conference will also investigate future fuels, with a panel of experts discussing how to power the machines of the future.

The Executive Hire Show returns with a bang

by Louise Carney editorial correspondent Executive Hire Show The 15th annual Executive Hire Show took place on 9 and 10 February at the Coventry Building Society Arena. This year’s event comprised 155 exhibitors, with 42 companies making their show debuts. Unique visitor numbers totalled 2,751 over the two-day show.

Visitors from the hire sector attended the event to expand their fleets with new products and to discover the latest innovations and launches from the diverse range of exhibitors at the show to help them succeed in the year ahead. There was a real buzz among both exhibitors and visitors, who were eager to do business following the postponement of the show in 2021.

Sunbelt Rentals UK and generator supplier Shindaiwa UK announced a deal whereby Sunbelt purchased more than 100 Shindaiwa Eco Hybrid 300 welder generator machines, which offer 60% reduced fuel consumption and 50% reduced CO2 emissions.

Engineering innovators and firsttime exhibitors, Dragon Equipment, announced the appointment of Boss Plant Sales Ltd as its official dealer for London and the south-east of England at the Show.

Despite being a relatively young business, Dragon Equipment is already making an impact on the market through its innovative products and a unique approach to the on-site recycling of concrete, brick, asphalt, and paving.

As part of the new deal, Speedy will now invest across the low carbon MX Fuel product range, which includes the demolition hammer, cut-off saw and diamond core drill among a great many other MX Fuel tools.

There was a record number of product launches at the show, with an emphasis on environmental solutions including a huge increase in electric and hybrid machines on display.

Those that explored new power options or introduced technologies that improved safety, security and productivity in the workplace were celebrated on the Innovation Trail: ECO Live stage, which was presented by construction industry specialist Peter Haddock. This year’s Innovation Trail was sponsored by MHM Group.

Italian lighting manufacturer Trime was pushing the net-zero agenda. The company has been quick to embrace battery, solar and hybrid technologies too, all of which are embodied in the X-Solar Hybrid lighting tower it showcased on the Innovation Trail In combining a 335W solar panel, a 24V AGM battery and a fuel-efficient diesel engine, the new unit is able to run for an impressive 3,000 hours before the 300-litre tank needs to be refilled. Even more impressive is that the X-Solar Hybrid produces low noise and CO2 emissions and illuminates an area of 2,400sqm.

Like many of you, I took the journey to Coventry for the Executive Hire Show (EHS). The first thing I noticed when I pulled up in a taxi having been on a train since six thirty was just how busy the car park was – it was heaving. It was like either Coventry City or the Wasps RFC were playing a final. But, when I did pull up, I knew I was at the right place – you had Mecalac sponsoring the digital sign above the entrance, you had JCB scissor lifts out the front and a very smart Faresin telehandler by GGR Group.

Once I’d done the usual sign in and picked up my badge and show guide, I was met by an extremely happy FuelBox representative. In my opinion, they’d got a great location for the event – the first exhibitor you met, giving away a bag full of goodies before you were weighed down by everyone else’s. Personally, I liked the coasters inside.

There are big debates about fuel, particularly red diesel, at the moment but I think we’ll leave that conversation for another time, with expert industry professionals who know a little more about the subject than me.

If you were there on Wednesday, Thursday or both days, you would probably have had the same thought as me as you got scanned again and walked through the double doors. Wow. JCB to

My first point of call was to see our good friends at Thwaites, where I was warmly greeted by Jeff Schofield of Schofield Marketing. We had a good catchup about the event, future plans and the success of the past few months for Thwaites. I was also able to get Jeff and Andrew Sabin (General Sales Manager) in for a photo.

I think that the EHS team did brilliantly attracting new exhibitors, including ones that I haven’t seen at previous shows, for example Kohler Engines, Hydroscand UK and SANY UK & Ireland. SANY UK & Ireland turned up in style – I was in awe of their machines and I might add, there was a

Geith bucket attached to one of their excavators.

I spend about 85% of my working time on the phone talking to industry suppliers for a variety of reasons, whether chasing advertisement copy, talking about editorial in upcoming editions or selling advertising space. JCB’s product selection was firmly focused on electrical equipment. Several such items were prominently displayed and its substantial new battery-powered E-Tech telehandler took pride of place.

Chris Moore, Executive Hire Show Publishing and Events Director said: “After going through the visitor list with a fine toothcomb, we are delighted to confirm that the 2022 show attracted 1,901 relevant hire industry visitors – slightly up on the 2020 show. All hire industry visitors were from national and independent operations, which is again consistent with previous years.

This reconfirms the pivotal role of the show and its continued ability to attract relevant, quality hire professionals.

“It was great to be able to reunite passionate hirers with innovative manufacturers and suppliers. There was a real buzz around the show and, by the time it had concluded, many exhibitors were already reporting bestever sales.”

Lighting manufacturer, NightSearcher had a phenomenal event and had nothing left to break down at the end – all the contents on its stand were sold.

Duro Yokota Ltd reported that it had had the best show in a decade and the quality of the visitors was fantastic. This was echoed by Demon International, who said they’d had a fantastic show and thanked the organisers for putting on such a great event – and they were already looking forward to next year. And the praise for the 15th annual hire event didn’t stop there.

Lee Harris Business Development Director SANY UK & Ireland said: “We are so grateful to all who visited us at Executive Hire Show. We have had a fantastic two days and were blown away by the response to our machines. It’s going to be a busy year for Sany UK & Ireland.”

Snorkel reported that the show was great. Scott McCall, Net Zero Specialist and Business Development Manager said: “We did an awful lot of business, not the pre-arranged show order type either, and met some new people. The whole team were really happy with the event.”

Kerry Jones, Business Development Manager at IKAR GB Limited said: “This was our first ever show and the attendance was very good. The right people came through the door – the decision-makers – who were happy to engage with us. We have done good business, therefore a good return on our investment, which is exactly what you want from a show.”

CPA reports phenomenal interest in Stars of the Future Awards 2022 As National Apprenticeship Week took place, the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) was experiencing ‘phenomenal interest’ in the CPA’s Stars of the Future awards programme for 2022.

The CPA’s Stars of the Future awards 2022 are now open for entries and with around 900 apprentices across the six main plant-based occupations, employers have the opportunity to nominate their outstanding apprentices and trainees who they see as being the construction plant industry’s future leaders.

The nomination deadline is 31 March and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 7 July at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre near Coventry. This year Merryn Myatt will be helping present the Stars of the Future awards. Merryn is a former television presenter, newsreader and journalist who previously worked with the BBC, ITV and Channel 4.

Sunbelt Rentals has confirmed it is once again supporting the event through headline sponsorship and there has been a flurry of interest in sponsoring the various awards categories, highlighting its credibility as the premier event of the construction plant sector for recognising and rewarding the skills and calibre of the industry’s apprentices and trainees.

Stars of the Future is a national awards scheme for apprentices and trainees in the construction plant industry, organised by the CPA, the leading trade association for the plant-hire sector in the UK. The CPA has over 1,800 members who supply some 85% of hired plant to the construction and allied industries.

Nominations are welcomed from training providers and employers including plant-hire companies, manufacturers, contractors, suppliers and others operating in the construction plant sector with apprentices and trainees in their workforce.

This year marks a landmark for the CPA’s Stars of the Future event as it is the tenth year of the awards programme. Six national titles will be awarded this year – Plant Mechanic of the Year (Level 2), Plant Technician of the Year (Level 3), Plant Operative of the Year, Plant Installer of the Year, Lifting Technician of the Year and Hire Controller of the Year – as well as some special awards.

Last year 70 candidates were put forward from across the industry for a Star of the Future nomination, and the CPA anticipates even more nominations this year. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the CPA website at www.cpa.uk.net/skills-training/stars-ofthe-future. Stars of the Future winners will be in contention for a number of

prizes, as well as national recognition.

Previous prizes have included Snap-on tool kits, iPads and an all-expenses paid trip to Germany to visit a Liebherr crane manufacturing plant.

Stars of the Future is just one of the events the CPA is hosting this year.

Following the very successful CPA Conference hosted in October 2021, this year’s CPA Conference will take place on 20 October, also at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre near Coventry. The 2021 event saw leading figures from the plant-hire industry and stakeholders from across construction and government discuss two key issues impacting the plant-hire industry: the race to net zero and digitisation.

Launched earlier this year, the first of Bobcat’s new R-Series telehandlers have been delivered in the UK. The three T41.140SLP 14 m Stage V telehandlers form part of an order for five T41.140SLPs purchased by Truelove Property and Construction Ltd, based in Lincoln. With standard tyres fitted, the T41.140SLP offers a maximum lift capacity of 4.1 tonnes, a maximum lift height of 13.65 m and a maximum forward reach of 9.8 m.

The new telehandlers are in use on current Truelove property developments at Kirton Lindsey and Nettleham in Lincolnshire, where the company is building prestigious, individual twostorey family homes designed and built for modern open plan living with bespoke kitchens and bathrooms. Truelove builds all its houses to the LABC standard, one of the three main providers of structural or ‘new home’ warranties in the UK and the company abides by the Consumer Code for Home Builders 2020.

Presiding over some of the new Bobcat telehandlers on his project is Site Manager, Henry Truelove, Barrie’s son. Henry recently completed his first Ironman challenge in Mallorca in Spain, where he performed well, narrowly missing the

podium in his class. He dedicated his race to raising well over £2,000 towards the treatment costs for the mother of a good friend. She was seriously injured during a horse riding accident and was put into an induced coma for several weeks. She is only now learning to walk and talk again.

From construction to farming One of the T41.140SLP units is being used on Worlaby Farm near Brigg, where it is being employed to lift and handle steel components for a new 10,000-tonne grain store.

Worlaby Farm forms part of Happy Days Farming Company. Truelove bought its first farm in January 1994 at Farndon near Newark in Nottinghamshire and then went on to buy Worlaby Farm and another in Kingerby at Market Rasen.

The company has continued to grow with the acquisition of three further farms since then, with one at Snitterby in 1996 and two at Nettleham in 2006 and 2016.

Typically, the Bobcat T41.140SLP telehandler is used in construction applications, but this model can also find other uses in agriculture as demonstrated at Happy Days Farming,

Success in trying times You might think setting up a business just as COVID locked down the entire country was not the most sensible idea, but Northamptonshire based L4 Civil Engineering Ltd and its Doosan dealer Pioneer Plant have supported each other from the outset and far surpassed expectations.

Brian Conn, Head of Sales and cofounder of Pioneer Plant with Steve Corner, explains: “At first I did wonder ‘What are we doing?’ but our decision to set up the Doosan Construction Equipment dealership has been the best decision we’ve ever made. With a large number of infrastructure projects and new build housing developments, I’ve never been busier in all my working life.”

The same can be said for L4 Civil Engineering founder, Steve Lattimore.

“At the time I thought what the hell have I done, but it actually worked out better than I ever expected,” he says. “L4’s main focus is heavy civils projects; we do a lot

The two firms have supported each other from day one. Steve says: “I’d known both Brian and Steve [Corner] for about six years and worked with them on multiple occasions throughout my career. Brian Conn says: “L4 bought one of the very first machines we supplied. L4 started business just before we kicked off in June 2020. L4 runs a fleet of five Doosan machines, including two Doosan DX140LC-5s, a DX85 and two DX225 machines. One of the DX225 machines is the all new -7 model and has received rave reviews according to Steve: “The operator on the DX225LC-7 is a big fan. He ran the -5 previously and is a big fan of the new cab on the -7. The machine is more modern and the cab has had a facelift; it’s a nice place to work. BISAF is a technology provider to the construction industry founded by Paul Kuebler, owner of Premier Plant Hire in south-east London in 2006. The company specialises in solutions to improve air quality and worker safety.

Diesel particulates can have serious long-term health implications and greatly impact the productivity and efficiency of workforces breathing in these fumes, resulting in financial and compliance implications for companies down the line.

BISAF designed the Particulator® diesel particulate filter to combat this.

Paul says: “BISAF developed the Particulator because we saw that smaller construction machines, with relatively high concentration of particulate in the exhaust, were being used in confined spaces, leading to dangerously poor air quality for workers and others at and near the site.”

The Particulator filter system removes 99.9%+ of all diesel particulates from the exhaust of smaller construction machines up to 25 kW, revolutionising construction in confined spaces and dramatically improving air quality for workforces while complying with HSE requirements.

The system is bolted to a frame normally installed behind the machine operator and can be fitted to or removed from the frame in minutes. This is important for the plant hire business where a filter may not be specified for every job and the filter can be transferred to a machine when it is required.

Active regeneration Because of unpredictable operating cycles, and mounting the filter at the end of the exhaust system for easy installation and removal, temperatures are too low for a passive regeneration system to work, so an electrical heating system has been developed to clean the trapped particulate from the system.

When the filter monitor indicates that the filter should be regenerated, the engine is turned off, an external electrical supply is connected and one button is pushed on the control box to start the process. After 30 minutes the clean filter is ready to start work again.

Paul says: “We started by using OEM filter technology in which all of the exhaust passes through a ceramic wall flow filter. This was independently tested at Cambustion Ltd to give over 99.9% particulate removal. The regeneration cycle was also monitored during testing and showed good removal of accumulated particulate resulting in low back pressure over the filter.”

The Particulator is constructed in stainless steel with thick insulation to retain heat and high quality components for durability. There is also an optional stainless steel cover that protects the filter system from impacts during machine use as well as providing additional worker heat protection during regeneration.

An electronic back pressure monitor and data logger shows the operator the condition of the filter and when a regeneration is needed with a simple traffic light system. It is also possible to download the backpressure history to see frequency of regeneration and aid investigation of any operational problems.

Plaudits The Particulator has now been used extensively on different construction sites and has proved to be robust in operation and well received by workers. Paul says: “We have now had four years’ experience of hiring the Particulator through Premier Plant Hire, usually with excavators that are working in confined spaces. These particulate filters are proving very popular

with our customers, who appreciate the cleaner air in their working environment.”

Atlas 200MH a hit with family firm Four generations in, Nelson Stanley Ltd is no stranger to the world of scrap metal recycling and as it stands, no stranger to the various material handler brands either. Having run a number of different makes of material handler over the years, they chose to make their latest machine an Atlas.

Founded back in the early 1900s, the Dorsetbased scrap metal firm has been at its current yard in Poole since 1952. With second generation Nelson Stanley himself still a big part of the company, sons Peter and Nelson along with daughter Jane have grown up in the scrap metal business and now run the various sides of the company with granddaughter Sam playing a part too. As Nelson Stanley says: “A company is only as good as the people behind it.”

As the sole operator of the machine, Peter Stanley is best placed to discuss their decision for choosing Atlas: “Before now we’ve run pretty much every other brand of machine and we’ve experienced the pros and cons of each. We’ve often seen increasing parts prices, problems with reliability and backup. Over the years we’ve seen Atlas machines appearing more and more, seeing them at work in a number of yards and with positive feedback, we thought it was time to give one a go. We needed a machine that was able to turn within a tight space and load and unload right up against trucks. The Atlas 200MH seemed ideal and it fares much better than our previous machine.”

The Atlas 200MH is powered by a 6.1 litre six-cylinder Deutz liquid cooled engine generating 105 kW. It has a 10.15 m outreach and an operating weight of just under 22 tonnes, making it a nimble machine for the tight space of the yard.

Nelson Stanley’s new 200MH comes complete with 2.3-metre high rise cab; paired with the rear and righthand side camera system the visibility is further enhanced.

Heated seat along with stereo, USB Bluetooth connectivity, screen and roof guards, LED lights, boxing ring, telematics and more make the cab comfortable and user-friendly. Fitted with an Atlas 400 litre five-tine grab and complete with safety chevrons and high visibility decals on the outriggers, it really looks the part.

As the sole operator of the Atlas, Peter is in the machine day in day out: “You can tell when they build these machines, they really take pride in them. It feels a good solid machine and it’s stable with and without the legs down.

“Some machines you can tell when you drive them, they don’t feel sturdy. The Atlas gives you a sense of real security, not to mention the manoeuvrability being excellent and ideal for the tight space in our yard. We can’t knock the service from TDL either. When buying machines we want reliability and good service and support from the dealer, Roland and James at TDL have been very good.”

New CAT D1 mulcher features improved visibility and high-performance powertrain Complete with high-performance powertrain, closed-loop hydraulics and upgraded screening, the new Cat D1 Mulcher is specially designed to optimise performance when clearing a mix of small to medium-diameter materials.

Design-matched with the rugged Cat HM518 Mulcher, the D1 Mulcher clears a 188 cm-wide strip on each pass, making it the right machine for right-of-way construction and maintenance, site development, tree management and firebreak clearing.

The new mulcher is powered by the 77.6 kW Cat C3.6 diesel engine meeting US EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage V emission standards. An alternate emissions package for the C3.6 is available to meet Tier 3-equivalent standards.

The machine’s lower sloping hood line improves visibility to the mulching head, allowing the operator to better assess the jobsite from the cab. Standard auto reversing fan purges debris from the radiator and enclosures, plus the hinged grill requires no tools to access the radiator for cleaning.

Isolating machine vibration from the operator to reduce fatigue, the Cat HM518 Mulcher controls are mounted on the air-suspension seat. Inside the pressurised, heated and airconditioned cab, an intuitive operator interface features a 25

cm colour touchscreen monitor with standard reversing camera display to help improve all-around visibility to the jobsite. An in-cab drum indicator offers quick glance of drum speed and direction to help the operator manage ground speed and mulching productivity.

Featuring cladding material in high-wear areas, the new HM518 Mulcher frame offers increased service life. Bolt-on wear plates deliver long wear life and are quickly replaced.

Offering a drum speed range of 2,150 to 2,450 RPM, the drum’s 38 fixed teeth feature a single-bolt carbide tooth retention design for simple replacement.

Its closed-loop hydraulic circuit includes load-sensing hydraulics to prevent rotor damage when hitting an obstruction. The HM518 Mulcher has a 79 cm maximum lift height, 37 cm

maximum tilt and 25° maximum angle to either side.

Standard sweeps, screens, windows plus rear guard help to protect both the operator and machine when mulching. With its specially designed tractor platform, the D1 Mulcher is balanced and rugged to increase efficiency when operating in challenging applications. Contractors can choose between the conventional (XL) or low-ground-pressure (LGP) undercarriage design, offering 40 cm or 63.5 cm track shoe widths respectively, to increase flexibility and efficiency for working in soft underfoot conditions, on slopes and in rough terrain. To increase machine versatility, the new D1 Mulcher can be equipped with an optional variable-pitch/angle/tilt (VPAT) blade in XL, LGP or Intermediate configuration.

Off to a flying start

by Neil Edwards CEO of the Builders’ Conference The BCLive league table ended 2021 on an unseasonal high and it has started 2022 in similar fashion, with more than £6.2 billion in new contract awards getting the New Year of to a flying start, making it yet another month of positivity and optimism It could have been so very different. The UK construction industry could have returned from the festive break hungover and lethargic, and weighed down by economic expectation. Instead, the sector has hit the ground running, lodging £6.2 billion in new construction contract awards in a month that also saw several regional sectors enjoying a welcome resurgence.

Powering to the top of the BCLive league table for the month of January 2022 was a Lovell Partnership and Suffolk County Council joint venture established to deliver around 3,000 affordable homes in Lowestoft, Mildenhall, Bramford, West Row and Newmarket. Valued at £700 million, the 50:50 partnership will run for 15 years and will also include the

construction of new schools, employment land and open spaces.

In second place – again courtesy of a single landmark contract award – was Downing Developments with a £400 million mixed use development scheme at Plot 11, First Street in Manchester. That project comprises four buildings from 10 to 45 storeys in height containing co-living bed spaces, amenity services and ground floor commercial space, restaurants, gym and car parking.

Also scaling unprecedented heights with a single contract award is METKA EGN, which secured a £350 million contract award to claim third place on the BCLive league table. Providing an additional boost for the North West region, that project was for the construction of an energy- from-waste (EFW) plant at Ince in Chester. The plant will generate up to 49 MW of low carbon electricity whilst diverting up to 400,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste from landfill.

Mace stole the fourth position with a pair of new contract awards valued at a combined £305 million. The largest of these is a £300 million contract to build a new court and police complex on London’s Fleet Street. Working for client the City of London Corporation, the project will house a flagship 18-courtroom legal facility for Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service together with a new headquarters for the City of London Police.

Meanwhile, Kier Group took both the number five position on the BCLive league table plus the monthly crown for the highest number (13) new contract awards during the month. The most notable of the Kier projects is a £70 million new build that will see the former BBC Television Centre in London’s Wood Lane repurposed to provide 142 residential dwellings across a multi- level tower block. The project will also include a landscaped courtyard, car and cycle parking.

Despite the announcement of several major projects outside the south of England – most notably in East Anglia and the North West – London retained its crown as the most active and affluent

region. London contributed 91 new contract awards worth a combined £1.35 billion, pushing the North West (£1.2 billion) into a creditable second place.

East Anglian (£837 million) Yorkshire (£389 million) and Scotland (£352 million) also experienced a resurgence while Wales remained in the doldrums with just £79 million in new contract awards.

The breakdown of projects by sector reveals that housing (£2.5 billion) was still the most active part of the UK construction industry, notching up 129 new contract awards in a month shortened by the New Year festivities and a slow return to work. However, power and energy (£466 million), education (£436 million) and offices (£395 million) also enjoyed a positive January. Railways, meanwhile, went in the opposite direction. Having been a key contributor of major project awards through HS2 in the past few years, the sector slipped back to just two new contract awards valued at a combined £4.7 million.

There are, of course, threats to the sector’s current stability and confidence.

Materials shortages have largely given way to materials price hikes. Together with the rise and rise of labour costs, this has raised the unwelcome spectre of inflation. The switch from red to white diesel in April could impact further upon the sector, while a potential conflict between Russia and Ukraine places further uncertainty on energy process.

But with all that being said, the UK construction industry shook off its Christmas excesses and returned to work with a renewed vim and vigour. Long may it continue.
