As I did when writing the very first leader for issue #1 in September 2020, I invite the industry to get involved and be a part of the evolution of Demolition Hub, as so many have done so over the past 12 months.

I invite contractors to get involved with their news, their accomplishments and their successes; lets shout about it. I alluded to video because we launched Demolition Hub TV this month. I wanted to establish and consolidate our position in print before expanding into video. Now we are in a confident position, with positive feedback from many industry friends, service providers and contractors who believe in our professionalism and positive tone, we can engage even further by using our skills in film.

We have a couple of regular programmes. “In Conversation With…” involves me speaking with those who work in and for the demolition industry and we also have the classic site visits. Again, get in touch with me to be involved.

THE DEMOLITION DISCUSSION Dr Terry Quarmby of Dorton Group Dr Terry Quarmby is a 50-year veteran of the demolition industry and has completed the circle of contractor to consultant and back again. He is a former President of the Institute of Demolition Engineers.

His duties at Dorton Group include Director of Safety and The Environment, a role to which he is amply qualified with a Masters degree in Occupational Health, Safety and the Environment.

Terry is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), a chartered Environmentalist and a member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

Q

How did Dorton Group start how has it evolved since then?

Our managing director Duke Harvey started the company over 25 years ago. When picking the name he hovered a pin over a map of England, closed his eyes and stabbed on a small village called Dorton. That’s how we got our name. Since that time we have tackled a large variety of projects encompassing demolition, bulk excavation and asbestos removal.

Tell us about your team and working culture We have a workforce of around 40 people, which includes office staff, management, site personnel, lorry drivers and the guys operating our recycling facility. In the main, all our people have been with us for

many years and I would hope they agree to a man/ woman that we look after their needs.

Q

What kind of projects do you work on most frequently and are there plans to develop the range of services further?

We will tackle any kind of project, large or small. We have a reputation for speed and efficiency, particularly on large industrial or commercial buildings. When asked this question in the past I have replied, we will demolish an outside toilet right up to an oil rig or super tanker. I couldn’t possibly divulge our plans for the future, some reading this may think that’s a good idea and beat us to the start line.

Q

What are the standout projects from Dorton Group’s history and what challenges did they pose?

All our projects stand out on their own, especially those where payment is quick and often. Every job poses its own challenges. No two structures ever behave the same even when they have been identically designed. The one outstanding factor for our sector is that we are problem solvers and for some jobs that is a definite advantage.

Q

What makes Dorton Group different?

We like to think we have a different approach to some of our competitors. For one we avoid working for main contractors, preferring to work directly for the client, their agent or developer. We work hard to build confidence and respect between our client and our teams and will offer advice and suggestions on how the can project can be delivered ahead of time and under budget.

We have now settled into a work schedule that is demanding but manageable and is mainly generated by word of mouth through recommendations and repeat work. We have also found that regularly servicing our website brings a number of inquiries, as does our reclamation and recycling operation.

Do you undertake any Continuous Professional Development? How does this affect your marketing offer?

We do have a training strategy and schedule. Training Needs Analysis is an important process in identifying specific training and instruction, while our core foundation training subjects are delivered to all.

In addition, we follow our industry’s training group protocols to ensure that all our site teams are fully carded. At management level, we are all members of the Institute of Demolition Engineers and as such are required to achieve set CPD hours annually.

Our lorry drivers are also required to achieve CPD to keep their driver tacho card updated.

We also note that the training of our people is a requirement Top to bottom: The Astoria’s auditorium in 1958; the opening programme from 1933; and frontage on Gloucester Place in 1934

Tell us about the marketing and tendering process Over the years we have tried a range of marketing strategies, some quite successful others not so. We did go through a stage of wanting to increase turnover

How has the COVID pandemic affected Dorton Group?

COVID has undoubtedly had a negative effect on many businesses, with some ceasing trading altogether. We have somehow weathered the storm and while I couldn’t state that we have come out stronger, we have ticked over nicely. This may be due to not having a reliance on main contractors, who have certainly been more greatly affected than us.

Q

What are the biggest technological developments you have seen in the industry and what do you envisage will be the future game changers?

I started my demolition career in the late 1960s, which calculates as more than fifty years in the business. In those days, the industry was a very different animal to what we have now. It’s no secret that many a good operative died through ignorance, manual working processes, long hours and poor health and safety principles.

The transformation to the demolition sector has literally been life changing. Our plant and equipment is both bespoke and technologically advanced – it is truly awe inspiring to see the range that is available. In the future I can envisage even more radical changes occurring, particularly for personnel, in the wearing of exoskeletal suits and harnesses to enable ease of lifting etc that will cut muscular injuries dramatically. I also envisage microwave and laser technology for the breaking of concrete and mortars to quicken takedown times and increase recycling capabilities.

Q

How do you envisage Dorton Group in five to 10 years?

I don’t know about the company but it’s unlikely I will still be a part of it in 10 years’ time as I’m a month off my 72nd birthday. I imagine though that the Dorton name will live on and that providing we can bring

young blood onto the management and site teams we will continue to thrive. Attracting young talent is an industry wide problem. However, if technology continues at a similar

What does the demolition industry mean to you?

Demolition has been my life for so many years. It has been all consuming at times and has never failed to keep me interested.

Equally, I have achieved so much on a personal level through my affiliations and appointments that I doubt I would have been given the same opportunities doing something else.

Q

Who/what would you be in an alternative life?

I tinkered with the idea that I would have been a fisherman or a farmer as I like hard manual work. However, as I got older I developed a love of writing so I would have been happy to have been an author of note.

Q

Who is your favourite artist?

I don’t really have a favourite as I have an eclectic taste in music.

I do like to listen to Motown and seventies rock as well as Simply Red and ELO among many others.

I’m not an arty person these days and I prefer to watch movies on the small screen. I like all the usual blokey stuff with bangs, crashes and mayhem happening.

Q

Who do you most admire?

That’s a difficult question to answer because I have taken advice and watched many of my peers over the years.

However, I do admire those who have the courage and tenacity to strive for bigger and better things in their life by working and or studying hard.

It’s all too easy to sit back and let others do the hard graft. I am a great believer in one Yorkshire

saying in particular, “Tha’ll get nowt for nowt.”

The British Demolition Awards 2021 Ben Chambers gives a preview of next month’s awards.

As this issue of Demolition Hub lands on your desks we will have a matter of weeks and, depending on your postie, possibly days until the third British Demolition Awards.

It has been a long wait, with the previous event held in Manchester in July 2019.

Two years and a bit of loose change has gone by and with a fully COVIDfriendly environment, we are putting on a more intimate but nonetheless impressive affair. The must-go-to demolition event of the year will be held at the American Express Stadium, home of Brighton and Hove Albion FC. This year we have TV comedian Mick Miller doing a full set, and if you have not seen him before (I’d be very surprised), you are in for a treat.

I booked him after his hilarious live act at the Builders Conference Awards a couple of years ago. With Mick enjoying a much-deserved career revival having been featured on ITV’s “Last Laugh in Vegas”, he has an enviable gag rate with a traditional format on which he imposes his own personality.

I have no idea if it will be part of his act, but you can find this on YouTube; his drunk Noddy story is a classic comedy performance.

In charge of proceedings on the night is Master of Ceremonies, the BBC’s Mike Shaft.

I really look forward to sharing a chat and a drink or two with you all on 3 September.

The third degree

I’m pleased to report that we’re well underway now with the new cohort – our third – both on the MSc and Foundation Degree in Demolition Management.

On the Foundation Degree in particular, we’ve listened carefully to feedback, made some tweaks to our presentations and communications, and everyone seems to be really happy with the course offering.

We’re continuing to improve our offering on the Master’s Degree as well, working with the University of Wolverhampton to make sure the materials are the most relevant they can be, delivered in the best way possible.

For both the university and the Institute of Demolition Engineers, which delivers the Foundation Degree, these are relatively early days (both degrees are their first of their kind in the world, of course). So honest communication and openness are always greatly appreciated, something we should be encouraging throughout the industry, I believe.

Particular appreciation needs to go to Stephen McCann, who is now heading up delivery of the Foundation Degree. Stephen is a member of the IDE Council of Management, is highly qualified, and is providing a mixture of online and classroom-based learning, as well as marking submissions from the cohort.

Stephen is also managing director of Perses, a specialist demolition consultancy based in Edinburgh.

So it’s a sign of his superb commitment to this initiative that he is prepared to travel regularly from Scotland to the Midlands for the betterment of our industry. We are extremely grateful for his input.

In other news, we are getting some encouraging traction in pushing forward our best practice and lessons learned forum, to share experiences and expertise in our sector. We are already talking with the NFDC about the viability and practicalities of collaborating on a joint forum. Talks are at their early stages but there is positive intent from both the Federation and the Institute, so we’re looking forward to seeing how that progresses.

As I mentioned in my last article, the IDE is focusing on offering subject specific talks on various demolition topics, again in a bid to share knowledge and experience more widely throughout our industry.

I’m pleased to say that we are going to pilot the first one of these

These online sessions will be delivered by a range of industry experts, with opportunities to ask questions at the end.

Finally, I would like to mention our virtual Autumn National Meeting on Friday 24 September at 2 pm. We will have speakers on asbestos, the circular economy, mental health and wellbeing and on demolition.

As one of the largest and most attractive city centre development sites in the country, Birmingham Smithfield will be a key part of this evolving growth story.

The Smithfield site is a 14-hectare area right in the heart of the city and is near major retail locations, the creative quarter and

knowledge hub and the future city centre terminus for High Speed 2.

The future vision for Birmingham Smithfield includes new vibrant retail markets, exciting family leisure, cultural buildings, homes, public squares, and transport facilities. It will deliver 300,000 square metres of new floorspace and 2,000 new homes, with an investment value of over £500 million.

Prior to the huge site’s redevelopment, it will host part of Birmingham Pride 2021 before playing host to several events at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which the city is hosting. The site’s industrial past has almost disappeared with just three large structures remaining, two former city centre multi-storey car parks and the old Manor House Hotel.

pollution has seen councillors bring in a daily charge for the most polluting of vehicles coming into the city centre, nudging people to use public transport. The end of the two car parks will cement the city’s push to lower its carbon footprint.

Just a few miles away from the city centre is the suburb of Wednesbury, where demolition and remediation specialists Elford Demolition and Remediation (EDR) are based, and it is they who have been contracted to remove the two final structures on the site in preparedness for the redevelopment works to commence.

EDR undertakes a wide variety of demolition, remediation and earthworks packages across the country and is very pleased to be assisting Birmingham City Council in redeveloping the site.

It is a very rare occasion in a city the size of Birmingham to have the room that EDR has been afforded around a project. Despite the open concrete plain between each car park, the demolition teams must work closely with the City Council to bring both buildings safely to the ground as they both have large frontages directly onto extremely busy roads. While there is plentiful access to the buildings, EDR is still faced with working very close to existing gas and wastewater services, which stay live throughout the project. They also must contend with the issue of a fragile 43 inch cast iron water main running within inches of their works.

The site team, headed up by experienced demolition site manager Ray Mulholland, has had to deal with a number of issues on the project from day one, with the city’s rough sleepers constantly finding their way into the unoccupied buildings, even with full time security on site.

“We know it’s an issue in many cities and I’ve come across it before now.” Ray said. “We have to ensure that we sweep the building on a daily basis for rough sleepers and also keep a watchful eye out for discarded sharps too, which has also been an ongoing problem in and around the site.”

With the buildings soft stripped of any material, all that is left is a reinforced concrete shell with a few hundred metres of Armco barrier.

The first car park to be flattened was possibly the most awkward for the team. Consisting of six parking levels, the structure was constructed in a tight O-shape, with a stair and lift core to one end of the structure.

to demolish, the team had to contend with a working septic tank below one half of the car park.

“We cannot impose any additional weight onto the ground floor.” Ray explains “We have to remove this whole elevation before looking at the side closest to the road. When it’s time to do that part of the building, we must protect the street and work from crane mats to bring the building

down. Unfortunately, the lower slab will not take the weight of the mats and our high reach.”

The high reach machine in question is a Liebherr R954C and is one of the latest additions to EDR’s growing fleet of plant and machinery. Contracts Director, John Turner said: “We try and keep everything in-house. Having the experience and ability to deliver almost any demolition or remediation contract with our own fleet of plant and attachments means we are more efficient and capable of delivering a bespoke service to our customers. When we looked for a suitable high reach machine to add to the fleet, we didn’t want to be burdened with the cost and waiting time for a new machine. We knew that a high reach machine would only work so many hours per year, so we went in search of a quality used model and found just that at a dealer in Liverpool.

The Liebherr had come from the fleet of a well-respected demolition contractor and had been dealer maintained throughout its sevenyear run on their fleet. Liebherr had recently changed the engine and pumps on the machine, so we knew we were getting a good machine at a fraction of the cost of a new one,

complete with a manufacturer’s warranty on the most expensive components.”

Looking resplendent in the spring sunshine, the Liebherr is piloted by experienced high reach demolition operator John Smith. “I absolutely love the Liebherr.” John said. “It’s such a strong machine, it’s a joy to drive.” With a reach of 35 metres, John is able to remove the full width of this part of the building safely. To reduce the added loading of each floor, a quick scrape with the jaws of the Demarec MQP25P pulveriser ensures that any loose material is dropped to the outside before he starts another floor slab. Already familiar with the Demarec products, the EDR team like their build quality and speed of operation compared to other units on the market.

Working from one end of the building, the Liebherr will bring the structure down four storeys before one of the company’s 55-tonne excavators completes the lower two floors. As John works his way through the bays, the fallen beams are steadily processed by another experienced demolition man, Mark Warne. Mark has stepped aside from his usual high reach seat for the levers of a 22-tonne Doosan compact tail swing machine. “It’s a nice steady job processing the material. I’ll let John have the hassle of dealing with the high reach,” Mark grinned.

Working under a steady stream of water from the Liebherr’s built in dust suppression system and a nearby Motofog unit, John gradually drops the concrete structure to the ground, leaving Mark to clean up.

With just a matter of months until Birmingham’s Pride event, the first part of the site looks to be on track for completion. John said: “Before we start the next car park, we’ve got a tower block to do. The Liebherr is certainly going to be earning it’s money over the next few months.”

Tell us a little about your career at SGS and how you came to be there

My background is predominantly in sales within management systems and an opportunity arose with the team at SGS in autumn 2020.

Tell us about the history and development of SGS

Established in 1878, SGS transformed grain trading in Europe by offering innovative agricultural inspection services. The company was registered in Geneva as Société Générale de Surveillance in 1919.

What are the biggest technological developments you have seen in the certification industry and what do you envisage will be the future game changers?

The COVID pandemic has meant we have had to adapt very quickly to Remote Auditing Protocols. This was facilitated using a number of techniques including web based tools, portals and cloud systems.

SMT GB Stand LD9

SMT GB will be exhibiting the new all electric Volvo L25 compact loader along with the Volvo EW200E Materials Handler at this year’s Letsrecycle event and both machines will be seen working in the outdoor working arena at stand LD9.

The Volvo L25 compact loader is one of two new electric machines developed and produced by Volvo Construction Equipment with its stablemate being a 2.5 tonne compact excavator. A 48 Volt lithium-ion battery pack with a 39 kWh output gives the L25 an indicative runtime of eight hours. There are four charging options ranging from a simple domestic supply to high powered 32 Amp rapid charging giving full capacity in just two hours.

Weighing in at 5,000 kg the L25 Electric will be demonstrated with a 0.9 cubic metre general purpose bucket and will show off its high manoeuvrability in tight spaces in the demo area.

Following the highly successful introduction of the larger EW240E Materials Handler three years ago, Volvo Construction Equipment has introduced a 22-tonne version in the guise of the EW200E. This, like its bigger brother, is a purpose designed material hander that can be offered with the option of a gooseneck arm for five-tine scrap grab or a dedicated materials handling arm for use with rotating selector grabs. Powered by a six-cylinder Stage V Volvo engine developing 171 net hp, the EW200EMH has an operating weight of 22.8 tonnes, a forward reach of around 10 metres and an overall pin height of 11.2 metres.

Coyle Equipment Services Coyle Equipment Services (CES) was established in 2010 and specialises in sales, service and hire of all hydraulic attachments. In 10 years of trading the company has become the main dealer for many products including Epiroc, OKB Attachments, Dawson Sheet Piling Hammers, Auger Torque and Indeco.

Founder of CES, William Coyle started his career as a plant/ attachment mechanic back in Ireland before moving to the UK more than 12 years ago. He realised there was a market for repairing attachments, and he started to do

this more and more independently.

With the customers waiting for their attachment to be brought back into service, he was then able to hire them another, so they could carry on working.

Initially, he started repairing only breakers and as business started to grow, he leased a yard to work from. With more space, he was also able to offer hire attachments. The company soon outgrew this and went on to get a purpose-built depot in Greenford, which is still where its main operations happen today.

In April 2019 William decided to test the water further north and took over a unit in Birmingham to allow him to cover a larger area with the same services. The success of this venture led him to become the largest attachment supplier in the Midlands.

CES’s servicing and repair solutions and in-house workshops enable it to provide customers with a convenient and reliable source of supply to meet their requirements.

Austin Wilkinson Demolition

It’s been seven years since Austin Wilkinson left the comfort of being an employed machine operator with one of the north west’s largest demolition and earthworks outfits, setting out on his own as A W Demolition (AWD).

Talking to Austin, he says the time has flown by and while the company has grown massively on his hard work and determination, there have 42 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

also been times when he has felt like jacking it all in.

Austin started out on his own with a used Komatsu PC290LC excavator and Northerntrack selector grab, a combination still hard at work in his fleet to this day. As with any startup, there have been long hours and scrimping and saving cash wherever possible to reinvest back into the business.

Constant reinvestment, along with promoting himself on social media and at various demolition events, has certainly paid off as Austin now possesses a large fleet of machinery, attachments and a loyal workforce who have come through the good times and bad with him.

One thing Austin is very cautious with is investment in excavators.

machines coming onto the market on a regular basis that we can pick up for the right money,” Austin explained. “I would rather spend my money on buying the right attachments allowing us to do the job properly. At the end of the day, the excavator is just a source of hydraulic power for the attachment.”

I have been lucky enough to have followed Austin’s career from the demolitionhub.com

outset and have followed him around several sites across the length and breadth of the country. Starting off is always the hardest part. Anyone who has encountered him over the years will attest that Austin can be a pain, albeit a nice one. “I was always calling or messaging people pushing my services as a subcontractor and it got me in front of a lot of people, some good, others not so,” Austin

explained. “One good thing though, if I was asked to do a job, I would always do it to the best of my ability and complete it to a standard that I would be happy with.”

This drive to deliver a good service has given his growing team a good reputation within the industry to a point where some of the biggest names in the NFDC regularly use him for additional machinery requirements or as a subcontractor on some of their projects. “We do regularly undertake a lot of our own contracts across the UK but still work with certain companies to do smaller projects on their behalf,” Austin said.

Not scared of jumping in with both feet, 2017 saw Austin and his then small team take on the removal of a large pedestrian footbridge over the main road through Bristol.

Tandem lifts with 500-tonne capacity cranes, road closures and night shifts tested the team, but the successful completion of the works gave them the continued drive to push the company forwards to even greater success.

With an increase in work and the size of contracts awarded to AWD, Austin’s passion for kit has led him to go large. “I always said I’d have a 70-tonne machine in the fleet at some point.” he grinned. “I’ve now got three.”

All from Volvo, the machines are an EC700B ME, EC700B high reach and a standard arm EC700C and the latter two are fitted with the largest Lehnhoff couplers in the country.

“I wanted the excavators to be able to be as productive as possible and realised that this was the way forward. For us it’s a big investment but it does pay off pretty quickly,” Austin said. “We have a very good working relationship with the team at Worsley Plant, they have been very good to us over the years as have Andy at Northerntrack and the team at MTK. Without their help and assistance, we wouldn’t be where we are today. The same goes for my team who have stuck with me and reined me in when I need it.”

and a hook lift truck. The latest arrival is from the Stott Demolition fleet; a Caterpillar 330C high reach.

The well-maintained machine was refurbished by its previous owner just a couple of years ago and was kept in immaculate condition by its regular operator Keith Healey.

I caught up with the machine on a fast-paced job Austin had underway for one of his regular clients in Middlewich.

The former offices of failed construction company Pochin were being demolished to provide additional storage facilities for a security fence manufacturer. The Cat had been handed to Elliot Eaton, who has been with Austin for just a couple of years. Coming from a groundworks background, Elliot has excelled at demolition and is now the proud operator of the Cat. Fitted with its straight arm setup, Elliot alternated between the Rotar selector grab and VTN muncher, which was purchased with the machine, to quickly bring down the three-storey building. Again, like the majority of the fleet, the Cat was already fitted with a Lehnhoff Variolock hitch, allowing Elliot to quickly change over the attachments without leaving the cab.

“It’s a great bit of kit and makes the operator’s life so much easier,” Elliot said. “We’d probably have to have two machines on this job if it wasn’t for the hitch. I can demolish part of the building, swap to the grab and segregate the material before moving on to the next part of the job.”

Like any company, the ups and downs of the industry can affect people and change their outlook on things. One thing about Austin is his passion for the job. Whether he is working on a couple of terraced houses or a paper mill, he will (almost) always have a smile on his face and have a laugh and a joke with you.

Allu Transformer DH 3-17 XHD screener crusher bucket

ALLU has become the one stop innovator placing screening and crushing side by side. This brings increased capacity and reduced wear and tear for sites with five times the production rate. One million tonnes with McCloskey At the end of June 2021, Brookland Sand and Aggregates Limited celebrated a milestone achievement, delivering more than one million tonnes of product over a 12-month period for the first time in the company’s history. Demolition Hub visited Brookland Sand and Aggregates’ site in Cornwall to meet Company Director Marshall Cleave to find out more

Brookland Sand and Aggregates’ operation is vast; it operates from two sites with the majority of output coming from Littlejohns China Clay Pit in Cornwall, the largest china clay pit in the world, where we met Marshall Cleave for a site tour.

Brookland Sand and Aggregates works closely with the quarry’s operators, which mainly focuses on the extraction of kaolin. Due to the nature of the material and site’s geography, there is plenty of by-product from the process for Brookland Sand and Aggregates, with every tonne of kaolin producing around nine tonnes of granite, rock and sand. The material varies greatly in size, ranging from 25-tonne boulders to fine sands.

From this waste, Brookland Sand and Aggregates uses a range of equipment to produce more than 40 separate products, with 15 McCloskey machines at the very heart of the operation. “One of our first machines was a McCloskey, a S190 High Energy Screener, and it immediately impressed us with its performance” said Marshall as we drove on to the site. “In fact, we only recently replaced that machine for a new S190. It was still working well after 11 years of hard service.”

He’s not exaggerating. Their original S190 was being used on Brookland’s highest selling product, coarse concrete sand, and was responsible for producing 200,000 tonnes a year, delivering more than two million tonnes of sand over the 11-year period.

During that time, Brookland Sand and Aggregates has steadily increased its output, from around 250,000 tonnes per annum when operations started in 2010, to more than one million tonnes over the last 12 months. Marshall said:

“We hovered around the 750,000 tonne mark for the last few years, but it was during 2020-21 that we finally hit the magic million. Quite an achievement, when you consider there was a global pandemic at the same time.”

Reaching our first stop, we find two McCloskey machines, a J50H Jaw Crusher and R155 High Energy Screener, processing a mixture of materials. “This is a good place to start as you can see what we are dealing with and how well the McCloskeys work here,” Marshall said.

Processing starts with one of Brookland Sand and Aggregates’ three McCloskey J50Hs. Offering the widest jaw in its class, the J50 provides class-leading throughput and capacity with the largest stockpile height, essential for Brookland’s operation.

Marshall said: “Throughput, capacity and clean, quality product are all important factors for us; this is the start of our operation so we don’t want to create a bottleneck here. But it is the J50’s aggressive pre-screen that sets this machine apart from its rivals.

“As you can see, huge amounts of sands and fines are separated ahead of the jaw by the J50’s screenbox.

We can extract these fines for processing with a single machine, which is far more efficient and maximises the available volume in the jaw. This process also increases the longevity of the jaw by removing abrasives and producing a cleaner product from the main conveyor.”

From here, material is being fed into a McCloskey R155 High Energy Screener, one of 10 screeners on site. The R155 is one of the most versatile machines in the McCloskey R-Series range, with three end

products being delivered here, the majority of which is clean, saleable gabion stone.

“We rotate our machines around to even out wear,” said Marshall.

“Every machine has a go at the harder stuff. This is another benefit of the McCloskeys; they fold quickly and track well, so we don’t lose much in the way of uptime when we switch things around. The operators here like the McCloskeys; they are simple to use, reliable and

quick. Everything is hydraulic and lever-operated.”

Material can also be fed into their McCloskey C2 Cone Crusher, which is our next stop. Brookland Sand and Aggregates’ cone was one of the first of the new-generation McCloskey Cone Crushers to be delivered in the UK by McCloskey Equipment.

cone crushers include an anti-spin system, load and material level monitoring, fully hydraulic push button CSS adjust and full hydraulic relief system. The C2 delivers production rates up to 300 TPH, producing cubical chip from 3/8 to five inches in size. On the day of our visit, it was busy delivering 803 single-size aggregate.

The main classifier on site is a McCloskey S250, one of the world’s largest tracked mobile screeners.

The class-leading screening area is essential to Brookland Sand and Aggregates’ throughput, delivering clean aggregate, 10 mm and 20 mm product from the high-energy screening action.

On the day of our visit, the S250 was working with one of Brookland’s five S130 screeners, each with their own individual role in the site’s operations. A typical day will see two S130s working with Brookland’s S190s in the production of concrete

sand, one of the company’s biggest selling products, with the other three deployed to create single size aggregate, add lime to product or reclaim stone from scalping operations.

The S130 has proved to be a strong favourite with Marshall, who praised the machine for its flexibility and productivity. “We use these machines to support our larger screeners; they are great, delivering clean, ready to sell products. When we need to make adjustments or swap meshes, it only takes a few minutes before we are back to producing product; essential if we are to keep up production rates and meet demand.”

The McCloskey S130 High Energy Screener is used across a wide range of applications the world over, including aggregate, coal, crusher circuits and wood chips, but it is renowned for its fine sand screening and high production capacities, Marshall explained.

“To achieve a similar production capacity from another brand, we would require a much larger, more expensive machine, whereas the McCloskeys deliver high volumes of great product. That’s down to two things; the highly effective, aggressive screenbox and userfriendly controls.

“We’ve had other brands and machines here but they can never match the performance of a McCloskey; some can screen faster but the product isn’t as good, so you end up running it through twice, which wastes time and fuel and ultimately impacts you bottom line.

McCloskeys do it right first time.

“McCloskey also keeps things simple, with hydraulics and levers, rather than computers. I’m a bit of a computer nerd and enjoy technology, but this is not the right environment for it. It’s too harsh, too much dust in the air and it’s another thing to go wrong, which can’t be fixed with tools. McCloskey keeps this at the forefront of their design.

All my operators have to do is turn a key, engage the hydraulics and keep loading material.”

“We have our fourth J50H arriving on site any day now, which will be positioned initially at our North Goonbarrow site with our McCloskey R155,” said Marshall. “This machine alone should enable us to increase our production by a further 50 per cent and we are on target to reach 1.5 million tonnes of product per year by 2022. We’re not short of supply and the end products produced from the McCloskeys are first class.

The demand is there and we are well equipped to meet it.”

Directly supporting Brookland Sand and Aggregates is McCloskey Equipment, which has supplied most of Marshall’s machines and is Brookland’s go to supplier for

Gipo produces nine sizes of heavy duty impact crushers for recycling. The design is the same but the output tonnage requirement and feeding material will determine which size of machine is best suited to your needs. Rotor sizes are from 900 to 1,700 mm in diameter

and machine weights are from 28 to 250 tonnes, depending on the final configuration selected. The most common demolition waste specification combi impactors used by recycling companies are the R131 and R130, with a weight range of 70 to 90 tonnes.

Hoppers are supplied with 15 to 20 mm Hardox welded structures with a further 20 mm of Hardox liners. The base plate of the feeder is 20 mm thick. The optional one, two or three-deck prescreens can be 2 to 3.5-metres long triple step if required for a high percentage of fines removal. The side conveyor can be hydraulic folding or a long slot on conveyor and can operate on either side of the machine.

Usually customers prefer an eight to nine-metre side conveyor to accommodate a five-metre stockpile height and 125 cubic metres of material.

The crushing chamber and rotor assembly are the heaviest and most robust available on a mobile crusher and all Gipo impactors are fitted with a heavy duty pan feeder below the crushing chamber. This is designed to accept material flow directly inline from the bypass chute and crusher above – no

incline guides or funnelling in of the material.

Gipo has always offered crushing systems where the components ahead are continuously wider as the material flows forward through the machine. The pre-screen is wider than the feeder, the rotor is wider that the pre-screen, the pan feeder is wider than the crusher and the main belt is much wider than the pan feeder. This prevents wear, damage to the rebar and restrictions on material flow through the machine.

The company offers two styles of magnet. A common lateral magnet is positioned across the main conveyor where it has to pull the metal across. This system is works well when moderate levels of steel are in the feeding material, or the steel is small in length. An inline magnet is positioned much higher, at the tip of the main conveyor.

The main conveyor and magnet conveyor run at the same speed, which allows the magnet to gently lift the steel and transfer it forward to a stainless steel incline chute left or right and then into a skip.

If you opt for the onboard screening system, which is available in one, two or three decks, you can also fit the primary or two or three stage air density separation system for removal of light fractions of wood and plastic from the final product.

Gipo offers the same high quality but simple control system on all its machines, with no PLC. Each function has a lever and a pressure gauge. The levers have a 30-bar pilot fed solenoid valve on a simple load sensing system that is ultra-reliable and extremely

simple to maintain and fault find should an issue occur. The multi gauge arrangement allows for a simple way to monitor the operation and allows for convenient real time feedback by seeing if there is a specific component of concern or an issue beginning to develop.

Gipo crushers are commonly powered by its Eco Fuel Direct drive system, which will rival most generator driven crushers when cost per tonne is considered.

Customers using mobile machines in one yard or those who have access to cheap electricity on site have previously selected the same crusher but with two onboard electric motors to power their tried and tested simple control system.

Brown and Mason clears the way to lower carbon future Brown and Mason Group Limited, specialists in the demolition sector, was commissioned to demolish Rugeley B power station in Staffordshire in preparation for a low-carbon community. For recycling of demolition material, the company decided to purchase a third QJ341 mobile jaw crusher to work alongside the two units it already owns.

Over the past 60+ years Brown and Mason has established itself

as one of the largest demolition companies in Europe and now employs approximately 350 people.

Its projects have included urban regeneration, asbestos removal and heavy industrial demolition, including the decommissioning and site clearance of more than 55 power stations.

One of these projects is the demolition of Rugeley Power Station, which comprised 2no 500 MW coal-

fired generating units and 4no 117m reinforced concrete cooling towers.

The station was commissioned in the early 1970s and finally closed in 2016.

The Dartford-based demolition company was employed by Engie Group to execute the safe demolition and clearance of the site.

After months of careful planning, the cooling towers were successfully demolished on 6 June 2021.

Recycling For the site clearance, Brown and Mason needed a reliable jaw crusher to recycle the demolished arisings into reusable material. Ideal for demolition projects The QJ341 comes with a number of features specifically designed for recycling applications. These include a reverse crushing action for relieving blockages and a hydraulic raise and lower facility on the main conveyor. This has proved particularly beneficial for Brown and Mason due to the large proportion of steel in the feed material. The main conveyor can be operated at a lower discharge height to give greater clearance

between the magnet and conveyor, as well as enabling easier access for maintenance. Hydraulic drive enables the crusher to start under load, minimising downtime and a jaw level sensor ensures optimum flow of material into the crushing chamber.

The QJ341 also comes fitted with Optitooth jaw plates for extended life, increased throughput and reduced fuel consumption. These features, combined with Sandvik My Fleet remote monitoring system, all help to minimise operator intervention, maximise uptime and achieve optimum output at all times.

Flexibility with mobile solution

The new QJ341 is being used to crush the material at the site more or less whenever and wherever it is required. The machine can be tracked with ease to the material, rather than taking the material to the machine. Set at a CSS of approximately 60 mm to reduce down to 0-90 mm dust, the new QJ341 is working alongside an existing unit to process the sheer volume of material following demolition of the four cooling towers. The project is to be completed by the beginning of September.

Working to a lower carbon future Brown and Mason has developed a reputation for excellence in demolition and dismantling as well as minimising the impact of

its works on the environment.

This has been achieved through an average waste recycle rate of 98 per cent across the company’s sites as well as investment in its plant and machinery.

This ties in well with the future development of the site. Following completion of clearance work, the site owner and regeneration specialist, ENGIE, will proceed with

plans to redevelop the site into a low-carbon mixed use community.

This green development site was granted outline planning permission in April 2021 and will include 2,300 new low carbon homes with a low carbon all-through school. This is an exciting development for the local area and a great example of how a site can be regenerated to help achieve a lower carbon future.

Sales and Commercial Director, Fireflux Ltd Tell us how Fireflux began My background is in demolition and construction and I started out working in a purchasing department. It was during this time that I acquired a vast store of product knowledge and a broad understanding of the requirements this sector demands – making sure I was ordering the right product for the right task to keep our workforce safe.

I founded Fireflux in 2017 when I saw a gap in the market for my specialised knowledge and experience to advise and supply quality British-manufactured products to the construction sector.

The business really did start from humble beginnings when I initially began selling glasses, gloves and safety helmets from my van. This led me to open a small unit in Swadlincote in Derbyshire.

How has the business developed?

After opening up in Swadlincote, we had to take on additional staff.

From there, we kept growing the business – specialising in the supply of a wide range of quality PPE and professional workwear to the demolition, civils and construction sectors.

It’s been a busy but exciting time for everyone involved.

Tell us more about the move to the new premises and the opening Friend of the business and Team GB’s boxing representative for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, Frazer Clarke came down to cut the ribbon at our official opening. It was a momentous day with a sense of great pride.

Frazer has been a supporter of the business from the very beginning and we have supplied and sponsored his custom-designed tracksuits and other merchandise for his training camps and fights.

Our showroom and trade counter is open weekdays, 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. Customers can

What are Fireflux’s ambitions for the future?

Tell us a little about your career and time at Liugong Last year (2020) I celebrated 50 years in the industry by being appointed MD of LiuGong UK. This was a great milestone in my career and a great honour after five years with the company.

I started with CPMS (then the LiuGong dealer for the UK) in 2015, as Service Director, where I rejoined some of my Komatsu colleagues from a ‘previous life’. CPMS was appointed the LiuGong dealer for the UK in 2013. I quickly became more involved in the operation of the business and as Operations Director, I played a pivotal part in 80 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

How did you start out in heavy plant and what attracted you to the industry?

I left school in 1970, having just turned 17, and started a four-year apprenticeship with the Caterpillar dealer Leverton, based in Windsor HQ. From these early years on the spanners working on motor scrappers, dozers and dump trucks, I quickly moved through the workshop and field service into supervisory and management before completing 15 years’ service as Technical Services Manager.

These 15 years were a great learning base in understanding the industry, which in my world at the time was all Caterpillar.

How wrong was I? After 18 months with the Mitsubishi Excavator dealer Tridiam (owned

by McCormick MacNaughton) I joined Marubeni Komatsu as Service Operations Manager. I quickly learned that there was a lot more to the heavy plant industry than just Caterpillar. My role as ‘SOM’ was to develop and grow the service division to support the volume of Komatsu machines being sold in the UK. Five years on I was promoted to General Service Manager to further develop the parts, service and depot support functions.

A further five years on, I transferred to the Komatsu factory in Newcastle. Reporting to the Komatsu

European HQ in Belgium, my position as Regional Sales Manager was to support and develop the Komatsu dealers in Scandinavia, Ireland and the UK. This was a role change from aftersales to sales moving from the dealer to the OEM. Another five years on I moved to Miller, the attachment manufacturer supplying buckets and quick couplers to the construction equipment world. As Business Development Manager, my role was to develop and grow business with key OEMs and expand the dealer network globally. This was a senior position within Miller that took me to many countries around the world, demolitionhub.com

interview including China, Japan, Russia, South Korea and most countries in Europe.

After 12 and a half years with Miller, I briefly rejoined Marubeni Komatsu as Business Develop Manager before joining the LiuGong world in 2015.

Tell us about the history and development of Liugong LiuGong was founded in 1958 in Liuzhou, China. In 1966 LiuGong produced the first ‘modernised’ wheel loader in China. In 1987, LiuGong signed a design cooperation with Caterpillar and introduced Caterpillar technology. Fully electric machines are the future. Most OEMs are developing these including LiuGong, which is very much ahead with several models currently on trial.

How do you see the medium term development for the heavy plant industry?

The challenge to reduce engine emissions is now at Stage 5, where the gas and particle reduction is at its lowest. Technology is advancing towards electric where possible, but there is likely to be a ‘hybrid’ stage similar to the motor industry.

Ever increasing logistical costs has sadly spelled the end for one of the larger employers on the Fylde Coast.

Situated on the Hillhouse Business Park in Thornton Cleveleys, just a few miles south of Fleetwood, the former PVC manufacturing plant of Vinnolit has closed and become the latest victim of Manchester based demolition specialists, Connell Brothers.

Once occupying a huge area across the estate, much of the chemical processing facilities have long since disappeared, with remaining buildings being taken over by other industries. With Vinnolit now shut, this large area of industrial land once part of the ICI dynasty, now has a more modern manufacturing neighbour. Just a stone’s throw from the Fylde tidal estuary, the removal of the Vinnolit plant will see the business park’s owners use the remaining slabs on the site for new, smaller buildings in a bid to attract several small enterprises from around the area.

Connell Brothers has been tasked with the demolition of the large plant while leaving all the concrete slabs and foundations in place. “The slabs are staying as there is relatively new infrastructure and services we don’t want to disturb as it will cause issues with the site’s neighbours,” said Jim Connell, MD of Connell Brothers. This has also required the contractor to exercise care when moving plant around the site so as not to damage any of the road network running between the various plants they are demolishing.

Keeping an eye on the daily proceedings is former NFDC Site Manager of the Year winner, Kevin Brooks. Kevin has been with the company for more than 20 years and has not only worked on other large chemical plant decommissioning projects for the likes of Esso and Shell but has also demolished large swathes of the plants that used to stand on this site. “It was a huge site in its heyday,” said Kevin, “but things move on and we are here to give the area a new lease of life.”

very little in the way of asbestos to deal with. “It makes a change going into an industrial setting and undertaking very little in the way of asbestos removal,” Jim Connell said, “We had some floor tiles in the former control room and have found several gaskets in and around the pipework. In all fairness to the former owners of the plant, everything was decommissioned, cleaned and tagged before we arrived.”

This was echoed by Kevin who showed us the paperwork associated with the decommissioning and cleaning works: “I have never had such a thorough handover of a plant before. Every vessel, run of pipework and conveyor has been cleaned and tagged for our lads on site to visually see and this has been echoed in the paperwork along with photographs to prove the work has been completed. It has made a massive amount of difference to us and has allowed us to commence work immediately without any potential risk to our team members.”

There has been very little in the way of soft strip work to complete at the plant, with the former office complex being turned into Connell’s temporary site accommodation, leaving the team to turn their attention straight to the removal of the plant.

The plant was constructed from a variety of metals with a large number of stainless steel vessels present.

To process these effectively, the company bought a plasma cutter as a more cost effective and quicker way to slice the tanks into pieces. Kevin said: “We flatten the tanks out before slicing them into smaller sections.

It’s all done on the ground so that we can do it safely. We’ve put one of our experienced operatives, Paul Goldsborough, on this and he’s been achieving great results. The stainless ruins the blades on the shears and would be expensive to cut if we used oxy. There is a cost to buying the plasma cutter, but we think that will easily be lost in the increased speed of processing the material.”

the company is forced into sorting through a mixture of material on the deck. “It would be nice if we could have removed the material by grade,” Kevin explained, “but it would have been a very slow process. We have taken the decision to drop everything and sort it on the ground.

We have a very good operator in Jake Whitehurst (a previous NFDC Plant Operative of the Year winner) on our Volvo with a sorting grab.

He’s happy to sit there just sifting through the material and is very effective in sorting everything out for us. The work Jake does is invaluable.

We know we are getting properly segregated material, which means we are tipping less material as waste and are getting a far cleaner material and therefore a higher price for our recyclable metals.”

The bulk of the demolition work is carried out by Connell’s Caterpillar 375, 36-metre high reach with Paul Leavy in the seat. Steadily cutting away at the pipework and structural steelwork on the plant, Paul opens up the structure to reveal the large 25-tonne processing vats. With the vat in its cradle and all of the associated pipework cut away, Mick Murray sits in the Case CX490 with its straight boom tracks behind the vat to cut away the supporting steelwork. Then Paul can safely drop the vat to the floor, where a combination of LaBounty shear and demolitionhub.com

well, and we have had no issues with either the site owners or any of the neighbours, which also includes residential and holiday properties.”

As part of the reams of paperwork supplied to Connells from the former owners, site plans showing all the buried services were also handed over with Kevin walking his team through the job identifying and marking their locations. “Giving the lads that information makes them more aware of the hidden dangers on site,” Kevin said. “We were also handed water testing kits to allow us to quickly test the pH levels of a brook that runs through the site. We do this on a regular basis for our own environmental records, but have the EA coming to site to monitor the water quality at

The mixture of steel on the floor is then firstly processed by Mick before Jake takes over and sorts it into respective grades. “It’s nice to get the shears out for a change,” Jim said. “We seem to have been on concrete jobs for the last couple of years.”

The large site has benefited Kevin and his team as they have set up dedicated processing areas for general material and plasma cutting the stainless steel. “It’s not often we get this much room on site,” Kevin said. “We do have to keep access through to the occupied site next door, as one of their emergency exits comes out into our site. It has meant that we have had to fence off a lot of our site, but it has worked

As the project is completed, Kevin reminisces on the work he and Connells have already completed on the site. “It’s been a good job for us all over the years and it’s good working with a client who assists us with any site information we may need, enabling us to use the on-site weighbridge to ensure all lorries have their correct payloads and they leave us to get on with our job. It would be very nice if we could get the same quality of paperwork from other clients too.

It would make every job far easier and safer for the demolition teams taking the buildings down.”

As we look past the pandemic, what will a post-COVID recovery look like for the construction sector?

by Terry Lloyd, head of construction finance at Paragon Bank Last month marked a significant milestone in the course of the COVID-19 pandemic: the lifting of most remaining restrictions across England. The sector as a whole is now considering what the ‘new normal’ will look like in a post-COVID world, with live trade shows finally returning and industry events making tentative steps away from digital formats of collaboration.

We are very much looking forward to exhibiting at Demolition Expo, which is coming up in MidSeptember and will be hosted at Stoneleigh Park in Coventry. The event will bring together demolition professionals across the UK and beyond for the first time in a year and a half and will showcase some of the most standout manufacturing innovation within the sector.

One of the reasons why trade shows are so important is that they offer a unique opportunity for demolition professionals to stay abreast of all innovation in the industry. Attendance at Demo Expo will be all the more valuable as manufacturers have not stood still during the pandemic – there will be more than 18 months-worth of manufacturing innovation for attendees to discover, from remote control demolition machines to the newest in innovative and green demolition tech.

As we emerge from the pandemic, we expect the assets we fund to follow this path of rapid technological advance. There are a number of factors that are driving this innovation.

Firstly, the change in legislation removing tax relief on diesel is likely to trigger a spike in demand for electric or alternatively fuelled building and demolition equipment.

In March last year, the Chancellor announced the end of the diesel rebate for the construction industry, which will be taking effect from April 2022.

The Civil Engineering and Contractors Association (CECA) estimated that this could cost the industry an extra £500 million per year, so it’s no surprise that manufacturers are turning to electric equipment solutions in order to mitigate this, including electric or alternatively fuelled diggers and excavators.

A second emerging trend we are noting is innovation in intelligent technology. We are seeing rapid development in this field, with machines being fitted with increasingly sophisticated tech, from GPS to 3D lasers. This integration of hardware and software solutions is not only improving health and safety standards and risk mitigation but is also improving productivity, helping

prevent cost overruns and aiding the bridging of staff shortages.

Thirdly, there has also been a steady increase in requests for funding for on-site recycling equipment. Recycling has always been a vital part of the demolition industry as all materials end up crushed, processed and reused. Most aggregates and other materials on building sites are reclaimed. We have noted an uptick in demand for funding for equipment such as skip lorries and roll-on containers, which indicates that recycling is becoming a growing focus within the industry. With sustainability and cost-management both firm priorities for demolition, we anticipate demand for recycling equipment will only grow.

Komatsu UK (KUK), designs and develops European specification excavators from 21 tonnes up to 70 tonnes at its Birtley site near Newcastle.

Producing more than 2,000 machines annually, the company is also responsible for the Working Gear range of specialist machines such as long reach and high reach demolition variants.

One of the latest innovations to come from the Working Gear range is the K100 quick change system for demolition applications.

Komatsu UK has been a leader in the design of demolition specific excavators since its first demolitionspecific high reach machines were launched in 1998, and has since gone on to produce examples up to 90 tonnes in weight with operating heights of around 40 metres.

The company now offers two high reach models, the PC390 and the PC490, both of which use Komatsu’s own boom system.

Both models are Stage V rated, with the PC390HRD-11 offering a maximum potential pin height of 26 metres while the PC490HRD-11 will reach up to 32 metres in full high reach specification.

For the past couple of years, engineers and designers at Birtley have been evaluating the demolition machine’s versatility on site, looking at the time spent in each configuration, the time taken to change from high reach to standard arm and the use of each arm configuration.

Simon Saunders, KUK’s Product Manager for Working Gear machines said: “We have looked at several companies and the way in which they use their Komatsu demolition excavators. We found that in a lot of cases the high reach machine was being used to take large portions of tall buildings down and then either taken off site or parked up while other machines undertook any lower work.

“When we asked the contractors as to why this was the case, the most common reply was that it was a time-consuming task to swap over the boom systems. Not only did this demolitionhub.com

result in added transport costs for additional machines to site but it also meant that their high reach machines weren’t being used to their full and capable potential.”

Over the time that Komatsu has produced high reach machines, it has made the task of swapping boom systems easier, quicker and safer with the addition of fully accessible cradles and quick release hoses. This still requires the operator to leave the safety of their cab or brings another operative into the mix to help with alignment and hose changeovers.

This all changed in June 2021 when KUK announced the launch of its K100 system for the rapid and one-man changeover of boom systems on the PC490HRD-11. The K100 system allows the operator to change from a full, 32-metre high reach configuration to a basement excavation boom in minutes, all from the safety of their cab and all controlled by the sophisticated and fool-proof Human Machine Interface (HMI) system integrated into the machine’s touch screen.

Simon explained: “We believe that we are the first manufacturer to be able to offer this type of system.”

“We know there is at least one other quick change system available but we wanted our system to keep the proven structure of the existing booms, while also offering the desired versatility and ease of use.”

The K100 system is made up of two heavy duty connectors, one mounted to each side of the boom foot. Each connector not only carries the hydraulic connections but also transfers the electrical supply for sensors and lights. There are connections for dust suppression water supply as well as grease connections for an auto greasing system. Each connector marries up to a similar unit mounted on each boom section. The connection of the system is controlled via the in-cab screen on the PC490HRD and thanks to a small camera mounted in the boom foot, directs the operator into the correct spot every time.

Simon explained: “During our trials of the system we tried to connect the system incorrectly, but the inbuilt safety systems warned the operator about the misconnection and prevented the boom from being lifted clear of its stands.”

The K100 system takes technology from Lehnhoff, part of the Komatsu family, to provide a leak free and constantly pressured system. Simon said: “We had to be certain the system would connect correctly and let the valves seat together to allow oil through at the correct flows and pressures. With the HMI system controlling the coupling, hydraulically operated pins are pushed out into the boom to lock the boom foot and boom together before the connectors are guided together with four plates to ensure a perfect match. Only when the HMI is

satisfied that the coupling of booms is correct will it allow the boom to be raised.” All of this is potentially achievable by one person in minutes and allows a demolition contractor to use the full Komatsu boom system rapidly and safely.

Simon explained: “We have done away with the need for an operative to climb up and change hoses or bolt a cover plate on a ram. On our trial machines we found that the operators were happy to undertake high reach work and swap over to a shorter combination with larger tool capacity before swapping back to the high reach. It alters the way a project can be completed with just a single machine.”

The first UK example is due to go into service shortly and we hope to bring you some more operator feedback on the K100 system soon.

Andy Street: West Midlands Metro Mayor Recently re-elected Mayor of the West Midlands Combined Authority, Andy Street tells us about his remit, the status quo in construction in the region and what he hopes to achieve

Q

Tell us about your remit as Metro Mayor, particularly in the context of demolition and construction and the skills these industries require Construction has been a huge boom sector in the West Midlands over the past few years. As a region we have been building a record number of homes, pumping billions of pounds into our transport network, and remediating and knocking down old eyesore industrial sites. What this leads to is an incredible amount of work for the construction sector locally, with firms creating a plethora of jobs to keep up with demand.

We estimate there could be up to 100,000 employment opportunities within the construction sector in the West Midlands over the decade.

As Mayor I have two official parts to play in this. First there is using my powers in transport and housing to help stimulate demand, then there is getting people trained to take advantage of the jobs on offer.

For decades public transport in the West Midlands has been woefully under-invested in, and we have been trying to reverse that.

Whether it is extending our tram lines or building new rail stations, all of this requires a significant amount of construction work. Of course, we also have the daddy of all construction projects – HS2. I put my neck on the line to make

sure the government committed to HS2, knowing what a catalyst it would be for job creation in the West Midlands – starting with the construction sector.

It is a similar story in housing, where for too long the region has not been building anywhere near enough homes. So we set an incredibly ambitious target of 215,000 new homes by 2031, and after doubling house building over the last eight years we’re now on course to meet that target. But we have also created even more

work for the construction sector by building the majority of these homes on brownfield land. As the birthplace of the industrial revolution, the West Midlands is full of former factory sites that now sit derelict as a blot on the landscape.

The majority of these sites are contaminated, so housing developers wouldn’t go near them and instead decided to take huge chunks out of our irreplaceable greenbelt land around the edge of the conurbation. To stop this, we negotiated a sizeable housing deal out of government, with the money from that going towards cleaning up these sites to pave the way for developers.

Also as part of housing and regeneration team at the West Midlands Combined Authority, we are helping to rejuvenate town centres, with former car parks and office blocks meeting the wrecking ball. We create work through the demolition, paving the way for even more work when the private sector developer comes in to redevelop the site.

As critical as all this investment and regeneration work is, what is even more important is our skills and training work. There is no point creating all this work if we don’t have local people ready to take it on. This has taken on even greater importance given the damage the coronavirus pandemic has caused, and training in the construction sector is a key part of my plan to

create 100,000 jobs across the West Midlands in the next two years.

Thanks to the West Midlands Combined Authority having devolved control of the region’s Adult Education Budget – worth upwards of £130 million – we are able to design training based around exactly what employers want and need. That ability to adapt and flex courses will be critical as we mould around employers’ changing needs. In such a critical time for people’s jobs, we must avoid training courses that will struggle to lead to employment.

Q

What are your priorities in the context of demolition and related industries?

I have no doubt that we will continue to see an increased demand for demolition over the next three years in the West Midlands, especially considering the fact my manifesto lays out continued infrastructure plans as well as the removal of more old eyesore buildings. Already this term, despite only being a few weeks in, we’ve knocked down the hideous Perry Barr station in Birmingham in order to be rebuilt, and I’ve got the wrecking ball primed for more ghastly sites in the coming months.

Given the obvious demand for demolition and construction work,

we again come back to getting people the right skills to fill the jobs that will inevitably be created. My main priority for this next mayoral term is jobs, and construction and demolition is a clear area where we can create work. I am particularly interested in how we align apprenticeships with this sector, and I am determined we start getting some real momentum behind apprenticeships again given the poor performance nationally.

I would encourage any demolition employers to talk to our Productivity and Skills team at the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) about how we can work together to equip local people with the skills they need for their workforce.

Q

Where do you see the greatest gaps in skills and skills provision in industry?

I don’t think it’s a secret that there is a general lack of skills and skills provision across the industry, hence why there is so much employer demand. That means the first port of call has got to be to just get more young talent into the sector and more people training, in a sense regardless of what specific area they focus on. In the West Midlands we will continue to extend the reach of our free construction training programmes to incorporate employer-led knowledge and competence, enabling people to gain recognised industry cards to work on site, such as Certificate of Competence of Demolition Operatives (CCDO) cards, as well as NVQs for both new entrants and existing workforce.

In terms of the greatest skills gaps in the West Midlands in this sector, I think we need more people training in modern methods and off-site construction, as well as in greener, more climate friendly techniques. The construction industry is changing rapidly because of these new innovative methods, such as modular housing, and so we need to skill up to meet this rising and changing demand. Industry Training Board (CITB), which means they keep up to date on the latest construction skills research. We use this knowledge to ensure further education colleges and specialist training providers are offering residents both the traditional and modern training needed to work on major projects like HS2, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, housing and the Midland Metro.

Q

The University of Wolverhampton now has foundation and master’s degrees in demolition management. How do you see the balance between academic and skills-based education?

I don’t think we should get too worried by the names given to certain qualifications. In my mind what is far and away the most important part is getting people the skills they need to move into work.

Employers are not interested in what your qualifications are called, they are interested in what they show you can do. For example, we know across the West Midlands there is a shortage of skilled workers being able to operate heavy plant machinery, and so employers want people who can fill that gap.

Whether it’s a degree, diploma, or a six-week crash course, so long as people can prove they’ve got the skills and qualifications needed, that will greatly increase their employment chances. So long as the core skills are being taught, people will make personal judgements about what course is right for them.

Q

The UK is belatedly addressing its house-building shortfall over the past 50 years.

How does this apply in the West Midlands?

In the West Midlands we are doing a great job on housebuilding, with more than 16,500 homes built last year, which keeps us well on track to meet our target of 215,000 new homes by 2031. But it isn’t just as simple as building more homes, we have to make sure they are 100 | DemolitionHUB Magazine

built in the right place and are actually affordable for those who need them. That’s why we have implemented a brownfield-first policy, where using government cash we clean up derelict industrial sites to be turned into homes, and it’s why we have strict affordability rules. Any developer that wants to

use some of the West Midlands Combined Authority’s (WMCA) cash for remediation work has to agree to make at least 20 per cent of its housing development affordable, and that’s affordable by our new local definition where prices are defined by people’s incomes rather than the housing market. demolitionhub.com

You have recently been re-elected for a second term. What do you hope to have achieved by the end of your time as Metro Mayor?

It’s very rare that I can answer a difficult question with just one word – jobs. The COVID pandemic has left tens of thousands of people out of work, with many more fearing for their future. That is by far and away my top priority for this term. My initial plan is to create 100,000 jobs in just two years, and I hope that number can be far surpassed once we start taking into account private sector investment. Past that initial target, I want us to get our prepandemic momentum back, where the region had record employment levels, closed the skills qualification gap, and had the fastest-growing economy outside of London.

You worked for John Lewis over a period of 30 years. What did you bring to the mayoral role from the partnership?

I try and treat the job as Mayor as a business position, perhaps a CEO of the West Midlands role. I want to negotiate deals and get stuff done for the West Midlands after decades of stagnation and decline. I would much rather spend my time pouring over the numbers of a business case rather than having a petty political spat. In this case my business background in John Lewis is most valuable. I know how to negotiate, how to be non-partisan, and how to draw different sides together.

Critically, I learned something else from my time at John Lewis, and that is values. As much as getting stuff done for the region

is important, so is the way that you do it. That is why I’ve done my best to follow this non-partisan approach, and I hope that people would say they see me trying to do what’s best by my region rather than my political party.

Q

How do you see the outlook for Metro Mayors and the devolution agenda?

It is undeniable that the concept of Metro Mayors has worked, so I hope the government will look to see where more mayors can be established – such as in South Yorkshire recently. But I am more interested in the powers devolved to Metro Mayors. As successful as the concept has been, we are very limited in certain areas. I’ve talked a lot in these questions about skills and training, but the only real devolved powers we have is our Adult Education Budget for colleges and post-16 training. That means we have no say in primary and secondary schools, meaning we can only start influencing training and careers at a later age.

As well as skills, there’s also clearly a case to be made for greater financial devolution. At the moment whenever we want a project funded,

whether it’s to demolish an eyesore building or extend a tram line, we have to get out our begging bowl and head off to London. But why should civil servants in the capital decide what’s best for people in the West Midlands? Mayors and local authorities know their areas better than anyone and should have more cash at their disposal to spend how they wish. The way to make this work in the first instance is retention of local taxes. We know, for example, how much air passenger and vehicle exercise duty are collected in the West Midlands, so instead of them being whisked off to London why can’t we keep them here? It wouldn’t cost taxpayers a penny but would undoubtedly improve their lives.

What do you want to be remembered for politically (or personally)?

It would be nice to be remembered as a man who gave up his business career to lead his home region, and did it in a non-partisan, non-political way that brought the West Midlands together and led to improved outcomes for people living and working here.

In short, they are not to be sniffed at.

The need for robust health and safety procedures, strong communication and constant vigilance requires no introduction.

It’s a cornerstone of our industry and fundamental to any credible demolition organisation.

That doesn’t mean, however, that it is easy to manage. So much needs to be considered and carefully planned. Principal contractors are well versed in producing method statements, risk assessments and project execution plans, but do they do the job for which they are intended?

Let’s explore further.

What’s the point?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) clearly states on its website that ‘all demolition, dismantling and structural alteration must be carefully planned and carried out in a way that prevents danger by practitioners with the relevant skills, knowledge and experience.’

Ownership and responsibility It’s easy to assume that the responsibility lies with the management team of the principal contractor and of course, ultimate accountability does, but this does not mean that no-one else has a part to play.

HSE guidance lays out the roles and responsibilities of site managers and site workers – reinforcing the fact that everyone has a part to play.

The guidance stipulates that operatives must make themselves aware of health and safety procedures on site and the risk mitigation measures. They must also ensure they follow site rules and procedures.

An interesting element here is the responsibility that is placed on workers to take ownership for their own safety – it isn’t just down to site managers or leadership teams of the principal contractor. They must feel able to reach out if they are unsure – to raise questions and concerns, to clarify understanding or bring new ideas to the table.

In the same way that everyone on a demolition site has

responsibility to live, eat, sleep and breathe health and safety measures, full adoption of the method statement and execution plans is required.

Everyone has a responsibility to understand how the work should be carried out and also ensure they follow the processes that have been laid out.

Time to analyse So far, so good.

While ultimate responsibility lies with the principal contractor’s leadership team to plan, communicate, educate and support, site managers and workers also need to play their part and be able to understand methods of work, health and safety procedures and mitigation measures.

The challenge is making this accessible and understandable.

For context, I thought I’d run a search for method statements on Google to get a broad perspective, rather than relying on those that we produce as a reference point.

The results were as I expected and, for clarity, these were not statements for mega projects. They were all relatively modest sites comprising two or three medium size buildings. I’m not talking about the Burj Khalifa here.

Of the first ten I opened, six were in excess of forty pages (one was 118 pages long), three were over twenty pages long and one was just three, including the cover page.

The three pager barely covered where the site was, let alone providing suitable levels of information about how the project was to be managed and what the risk management processes were. demolitionhub.com

What’s next?

In among the War and Peace style examples I highlighted previously, I indicated one notable exception.

While still lengthy, at forty pages this method statement and risk assessment was far easier to digest. It contained the required detail and background, it showed careful planning and robust methodologies, but it was also user friendly. Containing plenty of CGI mock-ups of the site with clear instructions, it made sense. Anyone could pick it up, flick through and quickly understand the processes involved. It was easy to identify the safety procedures and risk mitigation measures and far more memorable due to the presence of the diagrams.

Of the others, it was particularly noticeable to me that only one of them wasn’t just page after page of text, with the odd table and maybe one photo. In essence they were weighty and daunting just to look at, even without trawling through them chapter and verse.

This isn’t to say that the information within is unnecessary, nor is this a call for shortcuts to be made. It does, however, make me wonder how accessible they really are and how likely it is that site workers and managers up and down the country will digest the content, let alone remember it and be able to act on it at a moment’s notice without further reference.

The length and weight of these documents is an issue, therefore, especially when you consider that site operatives are not used to working with volumes of documents every day – their skill set is broadly practical. They are there to ‘get stuff done’.

In addition, we have to remember that demolition workforces comprise people of many cultures and nationalities. In many instances English is not the first (or any) language of many of the workers.

When I visit our sites around London and the south east, it is often the case that the most commonly spoken languages are Hindi, Bengali, Serbian or Polish. The workers are highly skilled and trained but they cannot be expected to digest a multi-page document in English and raise meaningful questions about it.

I am sure that all credible demolition firms make certain there are bilingual supervisors in the group, allowing strong communication between site management and workers. As we do, I am also sure that they encourage questions to be asked and leave the door open to anyone who wants to clarify anything they don’t understand.

That said, if we are truly going to support site colleagues with their responsibilities to understand and follow procedures and provide the opportunity for them to be closer to the methods of work, we must think again.

That said, we know we can do better and I believe we have a responsibility as an industry to push ourselves further. To ensure these documents actually add value, we need to ensure they are accessible, brought to life and usable.

We should consider producing supporting documents alongside the in-depth method statements, including simplified diagrams and digital editions that can be made available on tablets with animations and multilingual versions to support the site teams.

Method statements and risk assessments are not just tick-box exercises, they ensure the quality of execution and safety of workers.

Existing approaches ensure we comply with legislation and deliver what our clients expect, but how much further could we go if we challenged ourselves to help our teams help themselves?

I leave this question hanging – what more can we all do to raise standards, to improve safety and develop the reputation of the industry and our clients through excellent practice?

Modern slavery

In an initiative announced on 30 June, the Environmental Services Association (ESA) and Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) said they would work in partnership towards the eradication of slavery, forced labour and human trafficking across the waste industry.

The joint commitment stated that their members would ensure compliance with the Modern Slavery Act 2015 across all their operations, and the two bodies would include relevant requirements in their respective codes of conduct.

Modern slavery is a subject we are hearing more and more about, but a lot of the time it is not known just how common it is. We all need to be more aware of it as it is increasingly prevalent and I am sure the demolition industry in the UK is not exempt. Modern slavery remains a hidden crime where people are exploited and forced to work while being controlled by someone else, using them for criminal and financial gain. Labour exploitation is the most common type of modern slavery.

According to Home Office figures, there were an estimated 40 million people in slavery globally in 2018 and 10,000 to 13,000 potential victims in the UK, but many victims are not identified or reported.

However, the National Crime Agency (NCA) suggested these figures are too low and that there are actually “tens of thousands” of victims, with the Walk Free Foundation estimating the number in the UK stands at approximately 136,000.

UK. The Modern Slavery Act which came into force in the UK in 2015, aimed at tackling forced labour in businesses and supply chains, and it is becoming more vital to demonstrate compliant, ethical operations that manage the risks of vulnerability to exploitation. From due diligence to risk assessment, businesses and suppliers need to show that they’re safe to work and partner with and be transparent about how they are managing their operations.

It is becoming more common now for the supply chain to have to complete assessments and audits to assure contractors that the labour they are engaging with is verified and recruited with integrity and that ethical processes are in place to protect the workforce and comply with the regulations of the Modern Slavery Act. Under the regulations of that act, all companies in excess of a £36m annual turnover conducting business in the UK are required to publish a slavery and human trafficking statement. Are companies of a smaller size turnover targeted by criminals and people-traffickers because there is a of a lack of awareness and guidelines? In a culture where temporary work is available and English is often a second language, this can be a highrisk factor for workers and SMEs. .

As a sector, we need to work together to better understand the potential areas where exploitation can take place and raise awareness from the top down. This needs to urgently filter through to the smaller companies if we are to eradicate this despicable exploitation of people.

At a crucial time when we are being challenged by the skills and manual labour shortage, we are high risk as a sector as we rely on temporary or agency workers.

Transparency is key and selecting contractors and suppliers with good processes and practices within procurement will help.

Conducting simple checks – like checking passports, which are often held by traffickers – will not only help identify weaknesses but it will also raise awareness in the supply chain of the importance of having good hiring standards and working practices. It is also vital to audit labour sourcing agencies and their terms of engagement with workers.

Ensuring training is carried out to existing teams across all businesses would help, so they are aware of policies and are trained in what to look out for in order to recognise where workers are being exploited.
