LUNCHTIME WITH HARPS & STRINGS

Sunday, 18 AUGUST 2024 | 1.00pm at Church of St Dorarca and St Teresa, Chapeltown with Tunde Jegede kora Ruth Wall harps Darragh Morgan violin Elisabeth Perry violin Carmen Flores viola Sébastien Singer cello

EVENT

OVERVIEW

Even by the standard of Beethoven’s often tempestuous life and times, 1809 was an eventful year – several propositions of patronage which were marred by war and the sharp decline in Beethoven’s health. The third work to be written in this year was his tenth string quartet, whose main portion of the movement are marked by playful accompaniment plucked figures that have given the work its “Harp” nickname.

This lunchtime concert begins its journey with Beethoven’s evocation of the ancient sonorities of the harp, before we explore the instrument in its truest forms. From the sitar-like Renaissance bray harp, the beautiful medieval Gaelic wire harp (clàrsach) and the Scottish lever harp, to the west African kora, this concert weaves the rich history of the harp into one sound world.
