Welcome As Cork continues to grow in scale, ambition and international significance, the regional opportunities have never been greater. Investment, population growth, innovation and talent continue to strengthen Cork’s position as a key driver of Ireland’s economy. Yet opportunity alone is not enough.

Delivery, collaboration and longterm thinking will determine whether we realise our full potential.

That message runs throughout this issue of ChamberLink.

From our recent report on childcare and its impact on the workplace, to discussions around sustainability, inclusion, infrastructure and talent, a common theme emerges: the challenges facing our region are interconnected, and addressing them requires partnership across business, government, education and communities.

It is fitting, therefore, that this issue also marks an important moment in Cork Chamber’s own leadership. At our Annual General Meeting, we were delighted to welcome Susie Horgan as President of Cork Chamber and to appoint five new members to our Board. Drawn from businesses and organisations across our membership, they bring a wealth of experience, insight and commitment to the role.

Childcare Provision and its Impact on the Workplace: A Cork Chamber Report As Cork continues to experience significant population and economic growth, ensuring the region has the infrastructure to manage these developments has become a key focus for our business community.

Our report, Childcare Provision & its Impact on the Workplace, provides an objective look at the operating environment for local employers. The findings demonstrate that childcare is an essential part of the economic infrastructure underpinning workforce participation, talent retention, and long-term regional competitiveness.

When Cork Chamber published its Q1 2024 Economic Trends survey, it highlighted an important trend across our business ecosystem. Almost one in four local businesses indicated that the availability and affordability of childcare were affecting their staff. At the same time, 72% stated that policymakers needed to take further measures to address childcare challenges, with 63% agreeing that these circumstances disproportionately impact women in the workforce. The findings indicated that further research was needed to deepen understanding of the issues and support the development of appropriate policy responses.

As part of this research, Cork Chamber conducted a targeted survey of members and HR professionals to highlight the scale to which childcare availability and logistics are now shaping workforce capacity, flexibility, and retention across businesses in Cork and beyond.

The findings included: •

System under pressure: 68% of respondents describe the current Irish childcare system as ‘not fit for purpose’.

Workforce impact: 57% report that childcare challenges are having a moderate or significant impact on their workforce.

•

Talent retention risk: 36% say childcare challenges have directly resulted in employees leaving the organisation or declining roles.

•

Flexibility demand: 75% of respondents have seen increased demand for flexible working arrangements linked to childcare pressures.

•

Absenteeism: 62% of businesses report increased employee absenteeism due to childcare-related logistics.

Capacity constraints: 75% identify a lack of available places as the single most significant childcare challenge affecting employees.

•

Gendered impact: 88% report that childcare responsibilities have a greater impact on female employees than male employees.

•

Shared responsibility: 62% believe addressing childcare challenges is a shared responsibility between Government, employers, and providers.

•

Employer-led solutions: 69% would consider supporting childcare through corporate crèches or tax-incentivised partnerships, if appropriate Government incentives were introduced.

The root causes behind these statistics are deeply embedded as our report demonstrates. Between 2019 and 2023, over 130 childcare facilities across Cork city and county were forced to close their doors, stripping out vital capacity. Across the country, waiting lists exceed 40,000 children. For infants under one-year-old, the situation is practically non-existent.

Overall, just over 200 crèche places exist nationwide for over 6,500 children on waiting lists.

This infrastructure deficit translates into real operational friction. Employers report instances where a crèche closes for a week due to staffing ratios, forcing parents to scramble for last-minute time off during busy business periods. In other cases, challenges in securing or maintaining planned childcare places upon returning to work from maternity leave can result in unexpected leaves of absence, creating temporary staffing adjustments for employers.

Furthermore, workforce retention within the childcare sector remains a challenge, with staff turnover sitting at approximately 33% in Cork city. While the Government has recently announced additional investment in Core Funding, the sector has faced pressures arising from a fee freeze at 2021 levels and administrative requirements, which has in some cases contributed to providers opting out of the scheme, with implications for parental fees and capacity.

The Path Forward: Our Key Recommendations As Cork continues to experience significant growth and investment, we cannot allow childcare constraints to dictate the boundaries of our labour supply. Drawing on international blueprints, such as Sweden’s affordable universal price caps, Denmark’s highly professionalised workforce, and France’s corporate tax credits, Cork Chamber is calling for targeted, practical measures to stabilise the sector and protect workforce stability: 1.

Encouragement of Employer-Supported Childcare: Introduce robust fiscal policies such as a Family Tax Credit, modelled after France’s successful CIF model, allowing businesses to deduct childcare investments and corporate crèche developments from their corporate tax bill.

growth. The evidence is clear: capacity constraints, workforce shortages, and affordability pressures are not only affecting families, but are now actively shaping business performance and regional competitiveness.

For Cork, a region experiencing sustained investment and economic expansion, the consequences of inaction are increasingly tangible. Our report demonstrates that employers are already reporting lost talent, reduced flexibility, higher absenteeism, and ongoing difficulties in workforce planning as a direct result of systemic childcare gaps. Without meaningful intervention, these pressures risk constraining the very growth the region is working so hard to achieve.

Fee Caps Linked to Income: Implement a cap on fees based on a fixed percentage of household income.

Our report also highlights employers’ growing willingness to contribute to solutions and work in partnership with Government and other stakeholders. This presents a significant opportunity to build a more collaborative and resilient system that reflects modern labour market realities.

Professionalisation of the Workforce: Introduce public sector pay parity for early years educators comparable to primary school teachers to address the core staffing exodus and unlock thousands of places currently sitting vacant due to lack of qualified staff.

What is now required is decisive, coordinated action to address the structural barriers identified in this report.

International examples demonstrate that where these challenges are addressed systematically, the benefits are felt across the entire economy.

Statutory Guarantees of Infant Care: Strengthen access to infant childcare through a guaranteed provision model to address gaps in the market and reduce workforce disruptions for parents returning from maternity leave.

Support for Registered Home-Based Childcare: The introduction of conditional subsidies and tax incentives linked to registered childminders would create a dual incentive model benefiting both parents and childminders.

Cork Chamber will continue to advocate for practical, evidence-based reforms that reflect the realities faced by employers and employees alike. Childcare is a shared economic priority. Addressing it effectively is not only essential to supporting working families, it is fundamental to unlocking Cork’s full economic potential. Building Resilience Through Trade and Global Connectivity Over the past eighteen months, a series of global and geopolitical developments, including escalating trade tensions, tariff disputes, and ongoing conflict in key regions, have reinforced a clear message for Ireland and the European Union; economic resilience can no longer be taken for granted.

For open, trade-dependent economies like Ireland, the imperative is now to actively de-risk by widening global trading partnerships and strengthening the functioning of the EU Single Market.

At national level, Cork Chamber has been actively engaging on the implications of evolving EU-US trade dynamics and wider tariff-related uncertainty, particularly in relation to Irish export competitiveness.

For Cork Chamber, this context has sharpened the focus of our policy and international engagement work. At its core is a simple objective: ensuring that Irish and European businesses can compete, grow, and diversify in an increasingly uncertain global environment.

These issues were also central to discussions in a meeting we held with Tánaiste Simon Harris, where tariffs and infrastructure investment featured prominently on the agenda.

A key strand of this work has been sustained engagement in Brussels, where Cork Chamber has continued to advocate for a more competitive, integrated and business-friendly European Union.

Recently, Cork Chamber was part of a Chambers Ireland delegation travelled to Brussels, (pictured above), to participate in the Eurochambres European Parliament of Enterprises.

The event brought together over 700 entrepreneurs and chamber representatives from across Europe to debate critical issues including EU trade strategy, market accessibility, competitiveness and decarbonisation directly on the floor of the European Parliament.

These discussions consistently reinforce a shared European challenge; while ambition around competitiveness, digitalisation, decarbonisation and trade diversification is strong, implementation remains uneven. The need to deliver on the recommendations of the Draghi report and ensure a fully functioning Single Market is now widely recognised across business networks.

Our recent communications have highlighted the need for policy certainty and a renewed focus on safeguarding Ireland’s open trading model, particularly in the context of shifting global supply chains and increased protectionist pressures.

Across all engagement, a consistent message emerges; Ireland’s competitiveness will increasingly depend on both strong external trade relationships and a more seamless, accessible European Single Market.

Recognising this, Cork Chamber has called for a fully functioning Single Market to be made a central priority of the upcoming EU Presidency agenda. Our EU Presidency Priorities submission sets out the need for greater regulatory simplification, improved market access for SMEs, and stronger enforcement of Single Market rules to reduce fragmentation across member states.

The objective is to ensure that businesses of all sizes can scale more easily across borders, access new markets, and benefit fully from the opportunities of European integration.

Alongside this focus on Europe, Cork Chamber has also been supportive of efforts to expand Ireland and the EU’s global trade footprint. Recent agreements, including the EU-India trade deal, the EU–Mercosur agreement, and the EU-Mexico agreements, represent important steps towards diversifying trading relationships and strengthening long-term economic

As noted in our response to the EU-India trade deal, such agreements play a key role in enhancing competitiveness, creating new opportunities for growth sectors, and providing important protections for indigenous industries. The EUMexico agreements similarly offer the potential to unlock new trade and investment opportunities, supporting exporters and helping to broaden market access for European businesses.

Similarly, a recent event with the German-Irish Chamber of Industry and Commerce provided members with valuable insights into the German market and the opportunities available for Irish businesses seeking to expand internationally.

Germany remains one of Europe’s largest and most influential economies, and the event enabled companies to better understand market trends and sectoral opportunities.

These trade developments reflect a broader strategic shift, reducing over-reliance on any single market or region while deepening engagement with high-growth global economies.

In addition to policy advocacy, Cork Chamber’s international programme continues to focus on practical supports that help members navigate and access new markets. This strand of work is focused on supporting businesses to strengthen global connections, identify new market opportunities, and enhance Cork’s international profile as a location for business, talent, and investment.

This work is delivered through a combination of initiatives, including the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN), which supports SMEs to grow internationally across European and global markets, and Connecting Cork, which promotes Cork internationally as a competitive growth location.

Through the EEN, Cork Chamber has supported SMEs in building international partnerships, accessing new markets, and connecting with potential collaborators across Europe and beyond. The Network provides practical supports including advisory services, partnership matchmaking, brokerage events, and market intelligence, helping businesses to navigate international expansion opportunities and build resilience in an increasingly uncertain global environment.

A number of recent events have supported this work by providing members with direct engagement opportunities with key international markets. One notable example was French Day in Cork, delivered by the Enterprise Europe Network at Cork Chamber in partnership with the Embassy of France in Ireland. As Ireland prepares to host the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Cork has been officially paired with France to strengthen local, cultural and economic ties. The event created an important platform for Cork businesses to learn more about the opportunities available within the French market, while also encouraging collaboration and identifying new avenues for trade, innovation, and investment. As Ireland’s closest EU neighbour and a key economic partner, France plays a central role in Ireland’s economic landscape, making this engagement particularly timely in the context of strengthening European cooperation and connectivity.

Alongside this European engagement, the Connecting Cork initiative has continued to strengthen Cork’s international visibility and relationships beyond Europe. Following Cork Chamber’s mission to Toronto, Montréal and Ottawa last year, a recent mission to Calgary, Alberta, organised by the Ireland Alberta Trade Association provided an opportunity to deepen relationships. The mission provided the opportunity to showcase Cork as a region with a highly skilled talent base and a strong international business ecosystem.

Collectively, these activities reflect Cork Chamber’s strategic focus on supporting international growth and positioning Cork as a globally connected region. By supporting SMEs through the Enterprise Europe Network and promoting Cork internationally through Connecting Cork, Cork Chamber continues to play an important role in helping businesses respond to changing global dynamics.

Why We Swapped Manila for Cork: A Story of Career and Family

by Jay Puntay, VP and Head of Order to Cash IT at Deutsche Börse Group The journey from Manila to Cork isn’t the most obvious one, but my family and I were seeking a much-desired fresh start. We embraced the opportunity presented by Deutsche Börse Group, packed our lives, and made the leap across continents. Looking back, it was a move that has rewarded us from the very beginning.

I am the VP and Head of Order to Cash IT at Deutsche Börse Group, a global leader in financial market infrastructure.

Though I joined just over a year ago, it feels like I’ve been part of the team for much longer, in the best way possible. The cultural fit was instant. I lead a dynamic team of more than ten professionals and my favorite thing about my role is the tangible impact we have. We are leveraging AI to reshape billing across the organisation and it’s thrilling that this innovation is being driven from Cork.

We chose Cork because it offers the perfect balance. The city has attracted major international players in the financial services and fintech sectors, creating substantive roles where you can genuinely lead and grow. For this reason, Cork is a fantastic place for financial services. It provides global ambition on a human scale, meaning a world-class career and an exceptional quality of life aren’t a trade-off, you truly get both.

My advice to anyone thinking of growing their career in Cork is simple: do it. The city offers a rare combination of professional opportunity and personal well-being. Here, work-life balance is a reality. My commute doesn’t dominate

my day, which gives me my evenings back and makes weekends feel like weekends again. This balance has made me a sharper, more present leader.

In my spare time, I’ve completely fallen for Cork’s outdoor lifestyle. I love cycling and getting out into nature, whether walking the beautiful grounds of Blarney Castle or strolling along the Marina.

Coming from the Philippines, I thought I knew what rain was, but Cork has kindly shown me I had no idea. A local recently told me you can tell it’s summer in Ireland because the rain gets warmer and I’m starting to believe them!

Honestly, I’ve embraced it, waterproof jacket and all.

has gifted our family a pace of life and a genuine work-life balance that was out of reach in the hustle of Manila. We came here seeking a new beginning and, together, we found our home. We are excited for all the adventures this new chapter holds.

How Irish SMEs are using the Enterprise Europe Network to Grow Internationally For many small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), international growth can feel out of reach. Finding the right partners, understanding new markets, accessing funding opportunities, and navigating sustainability requirements can all be challenging particularly for smaller and growing businesses.

That was the focus of a recent Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) event hosted by Cork Chamber and the Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) in Cork city and county at the Cork International Hotel. The session explored how SMEs can access practical support to help them grow, innovate and build international connections.

Importantly, the event moved beyond theory and focused on the real experiences of businesses already using these supports, as well as those provided by the LEOs.

A key message from the event was that businesses do not have to navigate these challenges alone.

Helping SMEs Grow Internationally opportunity The Enterprise Europe Network in Ireland, delivered through a partnership between Enterprise Ireland, the LEOs (led by Donegal LEO), Dublin Chamber, and Cork Chamber, supports SMEs looking to grow and develop internationally. Through matchmaking services, international brokerage events, advisory support and access to EU initiatives, EEN helps businesses identify opportunities that align

Billy Forrester, Managing Director of Bubble Brother, shared how support through the EEN enabled the company to participate in a business visit to Sicily, with flights and accommodation funded through the programme. During the trip, the company secured eight new international partnerships, creating opportunities for collaboration and growth.

Gordon Lucey, Managing Director of 9 White Deer Brewing, spoke about the company’s sustainability journey through the EENergy initiative and how the programme has helped improve operational efficiency across the brewery.

Through EENergy, the company received €10,000 in funding to invest in a new nitrogen generator, resulting in a 73% reduction in energy consumption.

Other Local Supports The discussion also highlighted the role of Local Enterprise Offices in supporting SME development. Graham Clarke, CEO of Baseworx, reflected on his experience working with the LEO, while Lisa Collins, Business Advisor at LEO Cork North & West, outlined the mentoring, training, grant supports and business advice available to companies.

Together, the speakers demonstrated how local and international support networks can help SMEs address practical business challenges, from scaling operations and improving sustainability practices to exploring new markets and building partnerships abroad.

Building Connections for Future Growth For SMEs considering their next stage of growth, the event highlighted the value of engaging early with support networks that can provide guidance, connections and access to opportunities.

Innovation at the Heart of Republic of Work Frank Brennan, CEO and owner of Republic of Work (RoW) emphasises that RoW is fast becoming a central hub for innovation, start-ups, member development, remote working and office space but in particular as a gateway to Europe for United Kingdom organisations.

Recently, Republic of Work (RoW) announced a new partnership with CodeBase in Scotland to launch Celtic Link the cross-border pilot programme designed to help start-ups and SMEs expand between Ireland and the UK with greater speed and lower cost.

further establishing RoW as a key player in international start-up infrastructure by connecting regional ecosystems and enabling companies to scale beyond their home markets without significant upfront investment.

In essence, the new programme is set to provide Scottish firms with a clear, supported path into the EU single market through Cork.

The Celtic Link programme aims to open the door to new investors, workspaces, networks, mentors, and programmes while also creating a fast, accessible corridor for talent, collaboration, and innovation between the two regions.

Through Republic of Work, for Irish startups and SMEs, the Celtic Link partnership provides a direct pathway into the UK market with access to Techscaler - one of the UK’s largest start-ups support programmes that is funded by the Scottish Government. For Scottish companies, Cork is a strategic landing point into Ireland’s pro-business environment and the wider EU single market.

The Celtic Link is about creating a lowcost, high-impact corridor for founders.

By partnering with CodeBase and the Techscaler network, RoW is giving Cork start-ups a home in Edinburgh and providing Scottish firms with a clear, supported path into the EU single market through Cork.

But it’s not just Republic of Work and the Scottish companies who are set to benefit from the association - Cork is also set to gain from the new partnership.

RoW has just completed a major expansion onto the 4th and 5th floors of 12 South Mall,

bringing them to over 100 desks and giving more room to welcome start-ups, scale companies, remote workers and corporate teams under one roof. Hatch Blue, the aquaculture-focused venture firm, has also announced they will be basing their team at RoW. RoW’s international profile continues to grow too. In recent weeks they’ve hosted a delegation led by the French Ambassador to Ireland and also represented Cork at the SelectUSA Investment Summit in Washington.

The thread running through all of it is simple: Republic of Work is building a hub for Cork and a gateway to Europe for our friends in the United Kingdom - and Celtic Link is the latest, and one of the most exciting, steps on that journey.

Representing You Cork Chamber announces newly elected President, Honorary Officers and Board members at Annual General Meeting 2026.

Cork Chamber members gathered at The Metropole Hotel for the organisation’s Annual General Meeting on May 25, marking an important milestone in the Chamber’s ongoing work representing more than 1,200 businesses across the region.

The AGM saw the appointment of Susie Horgan, Founder and Managing Director of Springboard Communications, as the new President of Cork Chamber. Susie succeeds outgoing President Rob Horgan, whose leadership and commitment over the past two years were warmly acknowledged by members on the evening.

The Chamber also welcomed five newly elected Board members: Michael Lynch (KPMG), Chris McCarthy (Uisce Éireann), Seán Murphy (Ronayne Shipping), Maria McKnight (Bank of Ireland) and Noel Murray (MTU). Jim McGrath (AbbVie) was also appointed Honorary Treasurer on the evening.

During the AGM, members also paid tribute to outgoing Board members Michael Nolan (Grant Thornton), Fiona Kearney (The Glucksman UCC), Carmel Lonergan (Trigon Hotels), Richard Morrissey (Moneycorp) and Catherine Sheridan (DNV), thanking them for their valued service and contribution to Cork Chamber’s work and governance.

The evening recognised the continued dedication of the Board, Executive Committee and Chamber team in advancing Cork’s business community and supporting the region’s growth, competitiveness and future development.

Choosing Cork Susie Horgan, President of Cork Chamber on growth, belonging and delivering for Cork

For those who may not know you, tell us a little about yourself and your journey to Cork.

I’m Cork born and bred — just not born-and-stayed. I grew up here, went to UCC, then left: postgrad at UCD and the rest of my twenties in Dublin. I came back to Cork in 2005.

That was a deliberate choice — the same one a lot of people are making now. I’ve built my business here and raised my family here. So when I talk about people choosing Cork, building something, staying — I’m not speaking in the abstract. I made that choice. I’d make it again.

You founded Springboard Communications in Cork in 2012. What has that experience taught you about doing business in Cork?

I founded Springboard in Cork in 2012 — which isn’t the obvious choice in my industry. Communications agencies in Ireland tend to be Dublin-based. We backed Cork instead, and it has worked. We’re a certified B Corp, we were named PRCA Agency of the Year in 2025, and we work with the kind of organisations that make up this Chamber — indigenous businesses, multinationals, scaling companies. What it’s taught me is that Cork rewards people who commit to it.

The talent is here. The ambition is here. And the business community genuinely backs each other.

You have been involved with Cork Chamber for many years, first as a member and later as a Board Director, Honorary Secretary and Vice President. What motivated you to take on the role of President?

I’ve been on the Chamber board for six years; I joined during Covid. I’ve spent over twenty-five years in PR, helping other people make their voices heard. At some point I realised it was time to make mine. Taking on the presidency is about giving something back to a city that has given me a great deal and about representing a membership I know well. I don’t take the responsibility lightly.

What do you believe makes Cork such a special place to live, work and do business?

Cork punches above its weight. It’s 11% of Ireland’s population and 19% of its GDP, an economy doing more than its share. But the numbers aren’t what make it special. It’s the fabric of the place: the festivals, the food and drink scene, the cultural institutions: the Opera House, the Everyman, the Crawford, the Glucksman. It’s a city big enough to matter and small enough that people back each other. When I came back in 2005, a lot of what makes Cork visibly Cork today wasn’t here yet. None of it was inevitable. Each piece came from someone fighting for it.

During your presidency, what are the key issues and opportunities you believe deserve the greatest focus?

Delivery. We don’t have a plan shortage in Cork. We have a delivery shortage. Some of it is happening - the Cork Area Commuter Rail is rolling out. But for BusConnects, Luas Cork and the housing zones, there’s still a gap between approval and delivery. That’s the gap that has to close. And it needs joined-up thinking, integration, not isolation, across transport, housing, energy and infrastructure. Joined-up thinking, joined-up action: across departments, across agencies, across central and local government. Cork is at its best when that conversation happens.

In your inaugural address, you spoke about inclusion and integration as important factors in Cork’s future success. Why is this so important to you?

Because integration isn’t a soft issue - it’s a competitiveness issue. It’s the difference between living in a place and feeling part of it. Cork’s talent base today is three groups: people who chose to come here, often international; people who grew up here and stayed; and people who left and came back, like me.

From the larger employers, I hear that people feel welcomed.

Whether they feel integrated is a harder question. People who don’t feel woven into a place, don’t stay. And people who don’t stay, don’t recommend Cork to the next person.

Belonging isn’t sentiment — it’s how we keep talent.

Cork is growing rapidly and playing an increasingly important role in the national economy. What would you like to see achieved over the next two years?

Two things. First, I want the major projects delivered — the transport and housing that’s already been approved getting built, not stalled between sign-off and site. Second, I want national investment and delivery to match the scale of what Cork carries for the wider region and the country. And I want the Chamber and the wider business community to keep making the Cork case where it counts — in Dublin first, and internationally where it matters.

Looking ahead, what kind of Cork would you like future generations to inherit?

I have two daughters. In a few years they’ll be making their own choice about where to live and work. I’d like them to choose Cork. What I don’t want is for Cork to become a city like a hundred others — no heart, no culture. What I do want is a fifteen-minute Cork. Safe. Walkable. With the things that make Cork Cork protected and visible. With infrastructure that keeps up with growth, not chases it. That’s what these next two years are about. A real moment for Cork. A real opportunity. And one we take together.

From Cork roots to powering Ireland’s energy transition Celebrating 50 years of Bord Gáis Energy As Bord Gáis Energy marks fifty years of energising Irish homes, communities and businesses, we’re looking back to where it all began in Cork and forward to the role we continue to play in shaping Ireland’s energy future.

Our story started with the discovery of gas off the Cork coast, a moment that would transform Ireland’s energy landscape. From the first supplies of gas to local industry to the construction of the Cork–Dublin pipeline, Bord Gáis Éireann laid the foundations of a modern and efficient energy system, enabling growth, supporting enterprise and changing everyday life.

That legacy continued to evolve. Natural gas was extended to homes and businesses across the country, the market opened with deregulation and we entered the Irish electricity sector.

In Cork, we further strengthened Ireland’s energy resilience with the development of the Whitegate power station in 2010 which today supplies over 10% of Ireland’s electricity demand and forms a key part of a growing Cork Energy Hub. Now, we are evolving to help lead Ireland’s energy transition.

With the backing of our parent company, Centrica plc, we have committed €1 billion in the infrastructure, innovation and customer solutions needed to support a secure, resilient and increasingly low-carbon energy system.

As Ireland accelerates decarbonisation, security of electricity supply remains critical and Bord Gáis Energy plays a role in safeguarding this. We have a total 1GW of energy generation in operation and developing, including the Whitegate Power Station and a new investment in a synchronous condenser at

our Whitegate Energy Park, reaffirming our commitment to Cork and its role in the national energy system.

While Cork has played a significant role in who we are, our footprint extends across the country. In response to EirGrid’s requirements, we are finalising the development of two new gas peaking plants in Dublin and Athlone, with a third facility in Galway currently progressing through planning.

At the same time, we are accelerating investment in renewables. By 2028, we will more than double our renewable portfolio to deliver almost 1TWh of clean electricity annually.

This is being delivered through long-term Power Purchase Agreements with leading Irish wind and solar developers.

Bord Gáis Energy is also investing in future-focused system solutions. The Kestrel Project, in partnership with ESB and dCarbonX, will repurpose the decommissioned Kinsale gas fields into a long duration energy storage resource. This will strengthen our security and resilience by reducing exposure to international price volatility and supply disruption while laying the foundation to enable large scale green hydrogen storage into the future.

Fifty years on, our legacy of powering progress is firmly rooted in Cork, but our ambition extends far beyond it. The energy transition is accelerating, and our investment and ambition is growing with it. What we have delivered to date is only part of our story. As we look ahead with a strong pipeline of investment, Bord Gáis Energy will continue to shape Ireland’s energy landscape and play a central role in energising a greener, fairer future for generations to come.

Winning the awards was an incredible moment for the team. The three trophies now sit proudly on display in our digital department and they’re a daily reminder of the standard the team is operating at.

What advice would you give to someone considering entering this year’s awards?

My advice would be to involve your wider team in the application process from the very beginning.

The strongest entries are usually the ones that genuinely reflect the culture, effort and collaboration behind the scenes. Don’t be afraid to tell the real story of your business, including the challenges along the way, as authenticity comes across strongly.

Also, focus less on vanity metrics and more on measurable commercial impact and results.

For us, it wasn’t just about recognition externally, it was acknowledgement internally that the work, creativity and consistency of the team is genuinely best in class.

The night itself was also a fantastic opportunity for everyone to celebrate together and reflect on how far the business has come.

How has the recognition from the awards impacted your brand visibility or engagement since your win?

We work with some of the biggest brands in the world including Unilever and Estée Lauder, so receiving this level of local recognition carries real weight.

It reinforces to both existing and prospective partners that the work being done by our team in Ireland is operating at an international standard.

The Cork Chamber Padel Cup, a new tournament celebrating one of the world’s fastest-growing sports and supported by HEINEKEN Ireland took place at The Hive Padel Club on Thursday, 25th June.

Off the court, the atmosphere was just as lively. Players enjoyed courtside snacks, refreshments and HEINEKEN 0.0 with plenty of time to recharge, network and swap stories from the matches.

30 teams representing their company paired up to battle it out to become the first-ever Cork Chamber Padel Cup Champions through a series of hard-fought doubles matches, with the intensity building as the tournament progressed toward a thrilling finale.

The standard of play was impressive throughout, and the competitive edge never let up as teams pushed hard for a place at the top of the standings.

A huge congratulations to the winning team from HEINEKEN Ireland who lifted the cup with a superb performance on the day followed

by PepsiCo in 2nd place and Morgan McKinley in 3rd place all winning OptionsCard gift cards. Ballyhass Adventure Group in 4th position won Hive hoodies and every player went home with a goodie bag to remember the day by.

Growing Momentum for Climate Action Cork’s Local Green Deal initiative continues to expand, with eleven new organisations formally signing new Local Green Deals on 03 June, at a special ceremony hosted by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Fergal Dennehy, at Cork City Hall.

Building on International Recognition on Climate Action The 2026 signings follow a landmark year for Cork’s collaborative climate action efforts. Last year, 12 organisations, including Cork Chamber, signed Local Green Deals, helping Cork secure recognition from the European Commission’s Intelligent Cities Challenge as the city with the highest number of high-quality Local Green Deals signed in Europe. That success led to Cork Chamber to receive global recognition at the World Chambers Congress, by winning the award for Best Collaboration of Chambers, Business and Government. These achievements highlighted Cork as an international example of how local collaboration can drive ambitious and practical climate action.

For the organisations involved since 2025, the past twelve months have turned the Local Green Deal into a practical tool for driving change. Maria Desmond, Enable Ireland Regional Fundraising Manager and Cork Chamber Sustainability Committee member commented “Enable Ireland was delighted to sign the Local Green Deal in Cork last year and continues to use it to guide and monitor our pilot programme at our children’s centre in Curraheen. New Local Green Deals Continue to Drive Cork’s Climate Ambition Forward This year’s signatories represent a diverse mix of businesses, non-for-profit and community organisations, reflecting the breadth of Cork’s sustainability leadership and the growing appetite for collaborative climate action across the city.

The new 2026 Local Green Deals include commitments across biodiversity, energy, transport, circular economy and community engagement, demonstrating that impactful climate action can take many forms and operate at every scale. They include powering operations with renewable wind energy and vertical growing systems that cut land and water use; biodiversity measures such as rooftop beehives,

wildflower planting and actions aligned with the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan; and nature-based initiatives spanning habitat restoration, citizen science and public engagement. On mobility, signatories are running active travel campaigns, commuting surveys and partnerships to boost walking and cycling across Cork. Others are tackling operational sustainability through AI-enabled food waste reduction and improved wastewater management, while one circular economy initiative is upcycling used coffee sacks into ecofriendly seat pads to divert waste from landfill through a community-focused, closed-loop model.

Strengthening Cork’s Climate Ambition With 23 organisations now signed up to Local Green Deals, Cork continues to strengthen its position as a leading European city for collaborative climate action. Conor Healy, CEO of Cork Chamber commented “The success of the Local Green Deals initiative demonstrates that sustainability is achievable for organisations of all sizes and sectors. Driving Sustainable Growth Through Energy Savings Through the European LIFE-funded REEValue project, Cork Chamber and its European partners are supporting businesses in the food, beverage and logistics sectors to take meaningful action on energy efficiency and emissions reduction. The businesses we work with are discovering that sustainability doesn’t have to be complex or costly, with the right tools and guidance, it can be one of the smartest investments a company can make.

Real Business Impact Across Europe Throughout the programme, REEValue has worked with businesses across the food, beverage and logistics sectors to support practical sustainability action, energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy uptake. Among the businesses REEValue has supported, Ballymaloe Foods has implemented initiatives focused on energy efficiency, waste reduction and responsible sourcing - including receiving Energy Efficiency Obligation Scheme (EEOS) energy credits, demonstrating the tangible financial benefits that sustainability action can deliver. West Cork-based brewery 9 White Deer has shown how a rural SME can successfully adopt renewable energy and energy optimisation measures, an approach recognised with the Small Business award at the SEAI Energy Awards 2025.

Across Europe, businesses participating in REEValue are implementing similar ambitious actions. In Portugal, a meat processing producer is reducing emissions and operational costs through renewable energy investment

and process optimisation, while an olive and wine producer is advancing sustainable viticulture practices. In Malta, two Maltese beverage companies are embedding sustainability measures across beverage production and wider value chains, with a strong focus on energy efficiency and operational improvements. Meanwhile, an Italian dessert producer has shared bestpractice approaches to energy management and decarbonisation, helping inspire knowledge-sharing across SME networks.

These examples demonstrate that sustainability action can deliver tangible business benefits, from reduced energy costs and improved efficiency to stronger resilience and enhanced competitiveness.

The most common mistake is treating energy efficiency as a single upgrade measure. Meaningful results come from addressing every layer of consumption: building fabric, heating, cooling and ventilation, lighting, electrical infrastructure, process equipment, smart controls, and renewable generation. Each layer compounds the last.

Most organisations do not need to tackle all upgrades simultaneously, but they do need to take a holistic view and approach to ensure they retrofit smart from the start.

That work begins with three critical steps: Energy metering gives you the data to understand how energy moves through your building, where it is being wasted, and where investment will deliver the strongest return. Without it, decisions are guesswork.

Building a more Sustainable Cork, Together Reflections from Prof Fiona Kearney, Chair of Cork Chamber’s Sustainability Committee (2024-2026)

When Rob Horgan asked me to take on the role of Chair of Cork Chamber’s Sustainability Committee in August 2024, I had a clear sense of why sustainability mattered, to business, to our city, to the world. What I didn’t fully anticipate was how much the role would reshape my thinking about how change actually happens.

As I complete my time on Cork Chamber board, the lesson I carry most clearly is this: collaboration is key and the approach taken by the Chamber executive is exceptional because it values people as well as the planet.

As past president, Paula Cogan had made sustainability a defining aspect of her tenure, and the Sustainable Cork Programme had already done remarkable groundwork before I took the chair. Since its launch in 2020, it has presented events spanning topics from the energy transition and circular economy to biodiversity, urban resilience, inclusive workplaces and the creative arts. The job of the committee was to keep building momentum and deepen the connections it was already sparking.

What struck me most, attending and shaping those quarterly events, was the quality of the room. Engineers sitting beside HR professionals, CEOs comparing notes with community organisations, sustainability leads from multinationals exchanging ideas with the owners of small local businesses,

arts organisations and charities being given a real voice. The Sustainable Cork Programme works precisely because it treats sustainability not as a specialist concern but as a whole-business, wholecity conversation.

During my tenure, the committee guided some significant steps forward.

In February 2025, Cork Chamber signed a Local Green Deal with Cork City Council and the Lord Mayor of Cork, a moment emblematic of what we were trying to do: break down silos between the business community and local government, and commit publicly to shared climate goals.

That same year, the Chamber was appointed an SDG Champion, recognising the integration of the UN Sustainable Development Goals across our work with members, local authorities, charities, and not-forprofits. We subsequently became SDG Ambassadors, deepening that commitment. And the publication of Cork Chamber’s first Sustainability Strategy and Report, covering 2025 to 2028, gave us something we’d long needed: a clear framework against which to measure progress.

One of the things that stands out in the strategy and that for me, defines the integrity of the committee is the commitment of the Chamber executive to be exemplars of sustainable development - not just advocates. Each meeting brought fresh momentum

to initiatives being realised within, as well as outside, the organisation. It is important to highlight the extraordinary international success of the team. It galvanised us as a committee to see how Cork Chamber can achieve the highest honours on a global stage.

What made me even more proud was the extraordinary care given to enacting social sustainability, the realisation that our success also requires a diverse, equitable business city.

Sustainability conversations in business can sometimes tip toward the transactional: what do I need to report, what do I need to comply with, what do I need to do to avoid being left behind?

Those are legitimate questions. But the most energising moments during my tenure came when the conversation shifted to something else - when members started asking each other how they were doing it, sharing what was working, looking for creative, connected solutions.

In the last few months as Chair, I noticed a shift - a ripple created from action to influence, as chamber sustainability initiatives were requested and replicated among the wider membership. In the Glucksman, we will benefit from these resources and as I step back as chair, I will certainly look to keep connected to Cork Chamber’s sustainable leadership through cultural actions and creative conversations.

Joe Gantly Prize in Engineering 2026 Continuing its long-standing support of engineering talent, Cork Chamber was proud to support the Joe Gantly Prize in Engineering at University College Cork, an annual award recognising outstanding student achievement in engineering work placements and celebrating the important connection between industry and education in Cork.

Established by Cork Chamber in memory of the late Joe Gantly, the prize honours a remarkable individual who made a significant contribution to both industry and education in the region. A Civil Engineering graduate of Trinity College Dublin, Joe held a number of influential leadership roles throughout his career, including Director of European Operations at Apple Computers, President of Cork Chamber, Chairman of Cork Airport Authority and Governor of UCC. Cork Chamber proudly sponsors the prize to continue Joe’s legacy of fostering talent and innovation.

The award is presented to the topperforming students in the Work Placement module across UCC’s Master of Engineering programmes. Students who achieve the highest placement marks in their respective disciplines are invited to present their experiences and achievements to an adjudication panel, with the overall winners selected based on the quality and impact of their work placement experience.

This year’s winners were John Scanlan, ME Civil & Structural Engineering, who completed his placement with PJ Hegarty & Sons on the Apple Campus Extension project in Cork and Kate Donovan, ME Process & Chemical Engineering, who undertook her placement with Eli Lilly and Company in Dunderrow, where she contributed to process improvements within cancer drug manufacturing operations.

Runners-up were Mark Maguire, ME Electrical & Electronic Engineering, and Daniel O’Reilly, ME Energy Engineering.

Representing Cork Chamber on the judging panel and at the award presentation, Naoimh Frawley congratulated all recipients on their achievements and acknowledged the vital role that work placements play in developing the next generation of engineering talent. The calibre of presentations and the impact delivered by students during their placements continue to demonstrate the strength of collaboration between academia and industry across the Cork region.

Cork Chamber Recognised for Commitment to Workplace Wellbeing The PSYCHED Recognition Awards 2026 marked another milestone in Cork Chamber’s commitment to workplace wellbeing and mental health and wellbeing.

The PSYCHED programme has played an important role in supporting organisations across Cork and Kerry to create healthier, more supportive working environments. Cork Chamber has been involved with the initiative for many years and has consistently championed the importance of workplace wellbeing, both within our own organisation and across the wider business community.

The recognition reflects the sustained efforts of our team to foster a workplace culture where wellbeing is prioritised, conversations around mental health are encouraged and employees feel supported to thrive both personally and professionally.

Over the past number of years, Cork Chamber has continued to expand its wellbeing initiatives, delivering programmes and supports focused on mental health awareness, physical wellbeing, employee engagement, inclusion and work-life balance.

Through staff wellbeing activities, awareness campaigns, training opportunities, flexible working practices and access to support resources, we remain committed to creating a positive and healthy workplace for all employees.

Workplace wellbeing is also a key focus of Cork Chamber’s broader business agenda. Through initiatives such as the SME WellBusiness Charter, we actively encourage employers across the region to place employee wellbeing at the heart of their organisational culture and recognise the significant benefits this delivers for both people and business performance.

Beyond Good Intentions Driving Real Change in Inclusive Employment Inclusive employment is gaining momentum across Cork, but turning ambition into action remains a challenge for many organisations. Through the WorkAbility Inclusive Pathways to Employment Programme, a partnership between Cork Chamber and SECAD is working to bridge that gap – supporting both employers and jobseekers to build more inclusive workplaces.

Q: What is WorkAbility and why is it needed now?

The programme provides structured supports, including training, mentoring and employer engagement, to ensure people with disabilities can move towards meaningful, sustainable employment. Over the past year, we’ve supported around 80 participants across Cork, helping build both skills and confidence.

Q: What is the business case for getting involved?

Q: From an employer perspective, what are you seeing on the ground?

Naoimh Frawley: There is a genuine willingness among businesses to engage, but many are unsure where to start.

Employers are balancing competing priorities, recruitment pressures, operational demands and inclusion can sometimes feel like an additional layer of complexity. What WorkAbility does is simplify that process. We connect employers with candidates, provide guidance and show that inclusion can be practical, manageable and ultimately beneficial to the business.

Q: What kind of impact has the programme delivered so far?

Vicki Kelly: The results are encouraging.

We’ve seen participants progress into employment, training and work experience, but the real impact goes beyond numbers. Confidence is growing among participants and importantly employers are beginning to shift how they think about talent and capability.

Naoimh Frawley: For businesses, it’s often a case of “once you do it, you see the value.” Employers who have engaged with the programme are increasingly becoming advocates, recognising the positive impact on team culture, retention and overall workplace diversity.

Q: What are the main challenges businesses face when it comes to inclusive employment?

Naoimh Frawley: One of the biggest challenges is perception. There can be a concern around the level of support required or uncertainty about making adjustments in the workplace. In reality, many of the changes needed are small – flexible hours, minor adaptations or simply having open conversations. But without the right guidance, those perceived barriers can hold businesses back.

Vicki Kelly: Another challenge is moving from policy to practice. Many organisations have strong commitments to inclusion but embedding that into everyday behaviours takes time. That’s why training is such an important part of the programme – it gives employers the tools and confidence to act.

Q: How are employers supported to overcome those challenges?

Vicki Kelly: We work closely with employers at every stage – from recruitment through to onboarding and ongoing support. Training focuses on practical steps, such as inclusive recruitment practices, reasonable accommodations and creating accessible environments. It’s about making inclusion

Naoimh Frawley: There is a clear business benefit. Accessing a broader talent pool is critical in a competitive labour market. Beyond that, inclusive workplaces tend to be more innovative, more engaged and more resilient.

Vicki Kelly: And with the supports available, including mentoring and training, businesses are not doing this alone. The programme is designed to make participation as straightforward as possible.

Q: What needs to happen next to build on this progress?

Vicki Kelly: We need continued employer engagement. Demand from participants is strong, and there is huge potential to expand the programme further.

Naoimh Frawley: It’s about momentum.

The more employers that get involved, the more normalised inclusive employment becomes. There is still work to do.

Q: How can businesses take the first step?

Naoimh Frawley: Start with a conversation. You don’t need to have all the answers – that’s what the programme is there to support.

Vicki Kelly: Exactly. Whether it it offering a placement, attending training, or simply learning more, there are practical ways for every organisation to get involved. The key is to take that first step and act with intention.

Chartered Accountants Cork Society hosts annual AGM

Chartered Accountants Cork Society held its Annual General Meeting recently, bringing members together to reflect on a successful year for the society and to mark a positive leadership transition. The AGM welcomed David Swinburne, Partner at Forvis Mazars, as the new Chair of Chartered Accountants Cork Society. He succeeds Stephen Keohane, whose dedication and leadership over the past year helped deliver a strong programme of member engagement and Society activity. Speaking following his appointment, David Swinburne outlined his vision for the year ahead and the importance of continuing to deliver value for members across the region. Quarterly Economic Trends The quarterly Economic Trends report captures a snapshot of experiences and of the overall operating landscape for businesses across the Cork region.

The report is based on member survey and the results inform our agenda and advocacy activity.

Rising business costs pose the top reason for a lack of confidence in the economy cited by 21% of business respondents, followed closely by housing supply (20%) and inflationary pressures (13%).

Particularly noteworthy are the acute skills gaps prevalent in science, engineering, and technology professions. Beyond these sectors, the survey results highlighted significant skills deficits in finance, marketing, sales, and customer service.

When asked how likely skills shortages are to continue over the next 12 months, a notable 64% express concern, with 21% deeming shortages very likely and 43% likely. 31% consider shortages unlikely, while a mere 5% are highly optimistic.

Upskilling and reskilling initiatives were identified as the most prominent action businesses are taking to combat skills shortages, followed by remote/hybrid working strategies and digitalisation/ automation efforts. Businesses also reported undertaking collaborative approaches to talent attraction by partnering with further and higher education institutions. While others are reevaluating their current skills strategies.

Where specialist skills gaps exist locally businesses report that they are recruiting from elsewhere mainly the EU, the UK and USA.

Heading into Q1 2024 the sentiment is positive and 57% of respondents expect an increase in turnover, 34% expect no change and 9% anticipate a decrease. Net profits are expected to rise in Q1 with 51% anticipating an increase, 37% no change and 12% expect a decrease.

In Q4, 41% of business respondents had vacancies advertised and 39% reported difficulties in filling them (i.e. remaining unfilled for more than 3 months since initial advertisement).

Despite this challenging labour market, 47% of respondents plan to increase employee numbers over the next 12 months and only 1% expect them to decrease.

Despite international instability which has impacted supply chains, market dynamics and overall economic conditions, it is noteworthy that confidence in the Irish economy has exhibited resilience throughout the fourth quarter,.

Specialist skills shortages have consistently remained the foremost obstacle in filling vacancies and continue to pose challenges to 67% of respondents. The availability of housing has been highlighted as the second most prominent challenge to filling vacancies (19%) followed by wage demands (11%).

Cara Partners announce €6m upskilling programme Cara Partners announced a major training and development initiative designed to upskill employees and support a step-change in capability across its Little Island facility.The €6m programme will run over three years, with the aim of enhancing multi-product capability, strengthening technical and operational skills, and building leadership and changemanagement capacity to support continued growth.This project is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland. Cara Partners has operated in Little Island since 1978 and forms part of the Schwabe Group, headquartered in Karlsruhe, Germany, a global provider of natural health solutions including plant-based medicines. Training will be delivered in collaboration with a range of academic and professional partners, including the Irish Management Institute, IBEC Academy, University College Cork, Munster Technological University, Irish Manufacturing Research, Trinity College Dublin, and Skillnet.

Enable Ireland Raise Funds for New East Cork Hub

Enable Ireland service owners, family members, staff and stakeholders gathered in Midleton, Co Cork recently to launch a fundraising campaign for a new Adult Services Hub called Mill View. The charity, a disability services provider, purchased a property on the Cork Road in Midleton and following confirmation of planning permission from Cork County Council work began earlier this year to redevelop and modernise the bungalow. The new development will include modernisation of the existing building and the addition of purpose-built accessible features for individuals with disabilities including two fully adapted personal care rooms, a sensory room, therapy room, computer room, adapted kitchen and outdoor area. Including the purchase costs of the property, the overall project cost is just over €2m. However, a funding shortfall of €330,000 remains. The charity is appealing to companies to nominate Enable Ireland as its charity partner or to consider this project for fundraising events or campaigns.

Perigus Energy has launched in Europe A new chapter for European onshore renewables has began with the launch of Perigus Energy, following the completion of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ (CIP) acquisition of Ørsted’s European onshore business. Formerly part of Ørsted, the business takes on a new name, identity and ambition as Perigus Energy. Perigus Energy looks to support Europe’s energy security and transition by developing, building and operating onshore wind, solar and battery storage projects in Ireland, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain. Its portfolio delivers clean, home-grown and reliable electricity to power the equivalent of circa 600,000 European homes, with five further projects currently TJ Hunter, Managing Director, Ireland and the UK at Perigus Energy, and under construction in Ireland and Germany.

Musgrave contributes €6.2bn to Irish economy

Musgrave, Ireland’s leading retail, wholesale and foodservice business, contributes €6.2 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the Irish economy and supports 63,500 jobs across the island of Ireland, according to a landmark Economic and Social Impact Report published to mark the company’s 150th anniversary. Musgrave and its independent retail partners generate €209m in annual social value, with more than 91% of stores supporting local charities, schools and community organisations. This includes an estimated €580,000 in annual donations through cash contributions, sponsorships, food donations and practical community support, alongside initiatives such as surplus food redistribution and volunteer-led community projects. The report also highlights Musgrave’s longstanding commitment to Irish sport. Through partnerships with the GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association, SuperValu and Centra support participation from grassroots to elite level, annually well over 1,000 GAA clubs nationwide, helping to strengthen communities and promote active participation across Ireland.

The Crann Centre welcomes its new Head of Fundraising, David McCarthy David brings extensive experience in fundraising, communications, and charity leadership from some of Ireland’s most impactful non-profits and community organisations, including Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland, Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, BUMBLEance and Cork Chamber. David will lead Crann’s Fundraising Team and work with the Chief Executive, Board of Directors, supporters and partners to develop our sustainable funding model to achieve our strategic goals and help more families access Crann’s life-changing services for children, adults and families living with neuro-physical disabilities in Munster. Joining the Crann team, David said, “It’s a privilege to join such an important organisation, and I’m looking forward to working with the team, supporters and partners to help grow Crann’s impact in the years ahead. The Crann Centre is an incredible organisation supporting children, adults and families. I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in, learning from the team, and playing my part in supporting the next chapter in its development.”
