Tri-Region Partnership
Restoration of Cork-Belfast flights and enhanced rail connections between Cork, Dublin and Belfast, have the potential to yield major economic and social developments.
The restoration of domestic flights between Cork and Belfast is one of the key priorities for the Tri-Region Partnership between Cork Chamber, Dublin Chamber and Northern Ireland Chamber, which recently convened for its second gathering of key delegates and stakeholders.
The development of a higher-speed rail link between Cork, Dublin, Belfast and beyond is also key to enhancing business and tourism links, making the island of Ireland a more attractive destination for visitors and investors.
Newly-published rail data shows the benefit of recent changes to the Dublin-Belfast rail line, which has seen a 50% increase in passenger numbers since an increase in frequency on the route; proof that demand is there for enhanced services.
The economic and environmental benefits of transferring long journeys from private cars to a reliable rail service will be significant and the tri-region partnership will continue to campaign for improvements on this existing route, while also championing further developments to establish a direct connection to Cork.
Cork Chamber has previously lobbied for a reduction in travel times between Cork and Dublin to 90 minutes to enhance connectivity and foster economic growth across the whole island of Ireland.
The matter was a key element of the first Tri-Region Partnership delegation in Belfast in May 2024, at which time, Cork Chamber CEO Conor Healy remarked that fostering stronger links between the regions would ensure that each could “prosper and grow together, using these unrivalled opportunities as key economic engines of the island.”
The partnership has since convened again in Dublin, with with members of the Cork Chamber team being joined by representatives from the Port of Cork, Cork Airport, Cork City Council, Cork County Council, AxisBIC, MTU, CETB, Irish Rail and Visit Cork on a trade mission which included stops at Accenture’s generative AI studio ‘The Dock’ and An Post’s new cutting-edge HQ, the Exo Building.
The next leg of the tri-region partnership will meet in Cork this Autumn to progress shared objectives. Works are already underway to create an exciting itinerary for our visitors.
Just 16% of Cork firms have regular or frequent dealings in the North, with one-third of businesses reporting occasional crossborder trade, according to Cork Chamber’s Q3 2024 economic trends survey. Firms cited market access difficulties and logistics among the key reasons for the lack of trade, highlighting significant untapped potential.
Higher-speed rail is just one of the action points that has been prioritised by the partnership, which has also made a strong call for the restoration of the direct flight between Cork and Belfast.
Doing so would enhance business and tourism links, making the entire island more attractive and accessible for visitors and investors.
Furthermore, the Tri-Region Partnership has campaigned for:
• Funding Allocation for Ports: Securing investments to futureproof the three major ports, ensuring they can support economic growth and industrial advancements.
• All-Island Innovation Clusters: Promoting collaboration between industry and education to foster innovation and create competitive clusters across the island.
• Enhancing Tourism Links: Developing strong tourism links by harnessing regional strengths, place branding, and evolving the story of Ireland to represent a modern island.
These initiatives are seen as vital steps in creating a modern, competitive and sustainable island economy, allowing all three regions to benefit from stronger tourism, business, and innovation ties.
Collective leadership from the Chambers will help to advance these shared aims, according to Rob Horgan, President of Cork Chamber. He said, “The Chambers of Commerce have a critical role in leading collaboration and driving forward an all-island approach to economic development. By working together Cork, Dublin and Northern Ireland Chambers are demonstrating how collaborative leadership can open new opportunities for connectivity, innovation and growth.”
Mr Healy added, “We see significant potential to advance a more integrated approach to economic development, one that harnesses the strengths of each region and creates shared prosperity. From championing higher-speed rail between Cork, Dublin and Belfast to restoring flights between Cork and Belfast, we are focused on strengthening the connectivity that underpins business growth and regional development. By advancing discussion on the opportunities for our ports, fostering all-island innovation clusters, and enhancing tourism links, we are creating the foundations for a modern, competitive and sustainable island economy.”

The SME Network
Against the backdrop of an increasingly uncertain economic outlook globally, supporting SMEs in Ireland to grow and scale has taken on increasing prominence on the policy agenda.
A strong indigenous SME sector in Ireland will bolster the Irish economy on the global stage and drive economic growth at home – a vital objective in the face of growing economic headwinds.
Sustainable economic growth and development is a balancing act, dependent on ensuring Ireland’s competitiveness on the global stage as it seeks to attract FDI, while also supporting domestic enterprises to reach their full potential at home.
SMEs are at the centre of Ireland’s domestic economy, creating jobs across key indigenous sectors such as tourism and hospitality, as well as emerging start-ups and innovative enterprises.
Supporting these SMEs to grow and thrive across a range of sectors starts from the ground up, and requires progress on key priority areas at local, national and international level. Here in Cork, there are many shared objectives between SMEs and
larger firms – businesses of all sizes want to see progress on key deliverables for our city and county, from transport advancements like BusConnects and Cork Commuter Rail to supports for sustainability initiatives and further education and training.
However, each SME is unique, with its own set of priorities and concerns, priorities and concerns that have an important role to play in feeding into Cork Chamber’s wider public affairs activities and advocacy on behalf of members. Enhancing our focus on SMEs’ priorities is a key commitment under our new Strategic Plan for 2025 – 2028.
To this end, Cork Chamber has established The SME Network to strengthen engagement with the Chamber’s SME membership base through a new and dedicated series of events. The SME Network will provide a platform for SME members to share feedback on key issues and priorities with the Chamber’s public affairs team to help guide the public affairs agenda.
Events held as part of the SME Network series are designed to be interactive in nature, to allow for an exchange of views between attendees and the Chamber’s public affairs team, who will provide attendees with an update on ongoing advocacy work at each event.
SMEs make up a significant proportion of Cork Chamber’s membership and The SME Network will provide ample opportunity for this diverse membership group to advance their policy priorities and exchange with colleagues operating in different sectors.
The first event in the SME Network series was held in March 2025, bringing together a wide range of SMEs from a variety of sectors to outline their key priorities for the coming months. Further events in the series will be held later this year.
Cork’s old R&H Hall silos get a new life - in a railway line
In a rare example of innovative recycling on a massive scale, almost all of the concrete from the recently demolished R&H Hall silos on Kennedy Quay is being given a second life, this time as part of the upgrade to the Midleton - Cork railway line.
The project, led by O’Callaghan Properties, is one of the biggest examples of construction recycling ever undertaken in Cork. In total, around 16,000 tonnes of concrete from the silos are being repurposed for the railway works, turning a piece of Cork’s industrial history into part of its public transport future.
The silos dominated the skyline around Cork’s docklands for more than 90 years and were demolished over a six-month period in 2024.
A new approach to demolition waste
O’Callaghan Properties worked for over a year with demolition experts O’Kelly Brothers, undertaking a complex and challenging project.
In Ireland, reusing concrete from demolition projects isn’t the norm, at least, not yet. The process is heavily regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency, with strict requirements for crushing, testing and certification before the material can be used again. It’s a time-consuming and highly technical process, but one that O’Callaghan Properties felt was worth pursuing.
“We had options,” explains Brian O’Callaghan, Managing Director of O’Callaghan Properties. “The easiest thing would have been to cart the concrete off to landfill. But we wanted to do something more sustainable, ideally something local, and reusing the concrete ticked those boxes.”
Significant environmental benefits
The innovative approach has the potential to yield substantial environmental savings. By keeping the material in Cork and reusing it locally, rather than transporting it to a distant landfill or quarry, the project will save an estimated 180,000 kg of CO2 emissions. To put that into perspective, that’s about the same carbon footprint as the electricity usage of 250 homes for a year or 85 long-haul flights.
And that’s only part of the story. By using the recycled concrete in a public transport project, O’Callaghan Properties is doubling down on sustainability. After all, improving rail infrastructure is itself a climate-positive investment, encouraging more people to use trains instead of cars.
A thoughtful goodbye to the silos
The decision to demolish the R&H Hall silos wasn’t taken lightly. For nearly a century, these towering concrete structures stood as a defining feature of Cork’s docklands. But after decades exposed to the harsh weather of the River Lee, the buildings had deteriorated to the point where reuse or refurbishment was simply not viable.
Still, O’Callaghan Properties wanted to ensure the history of the silos wasn’t lost. The new buildings planned for the site, part of the South Docks redevelopment, will occupy the same footprint as the original silos, and the design will incorporate visual nods to the industrial character of the old structures. The goal is to ensure the spirit of the silos lives on in a modern, sustainable development.
Preserving the industrial story
The respect for history didn’t stop at the buildings themselves. Before demolition began, a team led by Dr. Colin Rynne, Director of the Historic Building Survey Unit at UCC, carried out a comprehensive archaeological survey of the site. Every piece of historic machinery, every detail of the silos’ working life, was carefully recorded.
Key pieces of industrial equipment were also dismantled and preserved, with the intention of eventually putting them on public display. This heritage work was done in close collaboration with Cork City Council’s heritage and archaeology officers, as well as conservation specialists Southgate Associates.
A template for future projects?
This kind of innovative, circular thinking, where demolition waste is treated as a resource rather than rubbish, is something Ireland could see a lot more of in the years ahead. As cities like Cork grow and evolve, there’s a need to balance development with environmental responsibility.
The R&H Hall project offers a real-world example of how that can work: history is documented and respected, waste is avoided, carbon is saved, and a new public transport project benefits in the process.
“We’re proud of what’s happening here,” says O’Callaghan. “It’s a win for sustainability, a win for transport, and a respectful way to say goodbye to a site that’s been part of Cork’s story for generations.”
“Keep
it simple. Decide. Deliver.”
Valerie
O’Sullivan, CEO Cork City Council at Thought
These are the three guiding principles that have been adopted by Cork City Council’s new chief executive Valerie O’Sullivan as she charts a course for the development of the city over the coming years.
Cork Chamber welcomed Ms O’Sullivan and some of her senior leadership team to the Thought Leaders Council at the Hayfield Manor Hotel, where representatives of almost 60 of the Chamber’s partner companies and board convened for a policy-focused and agendasetting event.
It comes early in Ms O’Sullivan’s tenure as council chief executive having taken the position late last year and at a time when Cork City is looking toward an exciting period of development.
Attendees heard how the new council chief set about establishing her new team early, not wasting any time in setting out her priorities.
“Now is the time, this is the window. All the conditions exist for us to push that open.”
Leaders Council
“I don’t believe the first 100 days,” she said, referencing a traditional settling in period in a new role, adding that she established her new leadership team, including a specific director for the city centre, within her first week.
The message attendees heard was one of cooperation between public and private sector.
“I’m always struck by the fact that any perceived chasm between the private and public sector in Cork does not, in fact, exist,” Ms O’Sullivan said.
“And that is because we all want the same thing. We are all working to improve Cork City.”
She explained that the council is focused on its job of creating and developing a city that attracts investments, is a home to residents, businesses and students, and welcomes visitors.
Ms O’Sullivan was keen to engage with members about the city’s future and their priorities, taking part in a lively question and answer session on topics like transport, urban evolution, and housing, and she also explained how important it was to remember the work and achievements that have been done to date.
These include the ongoing public realm works at Bishop Lucey Park and Morrison’s Island, both of which are nearing completion, and the new Marina walkway, which has proven a real hit with walkers and cyclists since it officially opened in recent weeks.
The event took place as the council officially commenced a consultation process on the new Northern Distributor MultiModal Route, a 14km stretch from the Carrigrohane Road to Glanmire, which Ms O’Sullivan described as a “critical enabler” to improve the quality of life for those living and working in the city, and to opening up opportunities for further investments in the business and residential amenities on the northside.
The council chief spoke about the importance of cooperation between public and private sector as, ultimately, the end goals are the same.
“So what do we all want to achieve for Cork City? It’s difficult to condense that into one sentence, but I think eventually
it is to ensure that the city is a location of choice for a people; to give people reasons to want to work here, invest here, live here, study here, and spend time here,” Ms O’Sullivan said.
Among the most eye-catching aspects of the discussion was an in-depth map showing the scale of the Cork City Docklands developments. The 360-acre site is the largest regeneration project in the state and one of the largest in Europe and construction is underway on 639 homes already, with a further 1,000 in the pipeline.
“Now is the time, this is the window. All the conditions exist for us to push that open,” she said, urging business leaders to work together with the local authority to capitalise on Cork’s potential, and presenting the Cork City case such that it will attract the necessary funding to match the ambition.
As Ireland’s second city, and the key counterbalance to the Greater Dublin Area, she says Government investment now will pay for itself may times over in the years ahead.
Cork’s Local Green Deals
A milestone in sustainability
As part of the EU’s Climate-Neutral & Smart Cities Mission, Cork City is leading the way in climate action through Local Green Deals (LGDs). A Local Green Deal is a formal partnership between an organisation and the city to take impactful climate actions in its organisation or spheres of influence. These partnerships bring businesses, community groups, and voluntary organisations together to drive real, measurable sustainability initiatives across the city.
On February 13th, 12 organisations, including Cork Chamber, officially signed their Local Green Deal with Cork City Council and The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Dan Boyle. Cork City’s new LGDs are delivering tangible change across energy efficiency and building retrofits, renewable energy adoption, waste management and circular economy initiatives or community-led biodiversity projects.
Cork Chamber’s Local Green Deal reaffirms our commitment to taking impactful climate action, both through our own operations and by supporting our members and community with sustainability-focused offerings. By deeply integrating sustainability into our network, we are actively contributing to Cork’s ambition as an EU Climate Neutral & Smart City.
Achieving Cork City’s long-term sustainability ambitions requires further collaboration across businesses and local authorities. We are delighted that out of the other 11 signatories, 9 were Cork Chamber members. Furthermore, Cork Chamber enabled and assisted the following members in their Local Green Deals journey: AIB, Ballymaloe Foods, ENABLE Ireland, Springboard Communications, Trigon Hotels, University College Cork and Velo Coffee Roasters. Members Boston Scientific and Ballyphehane Community Association were also successful in their applications.

Cork City wins European Commission award at Intelligent Cities Challenge conference
Between the 5th and 6th of March, Cork City’s approach to climate action was recognised on the European stage in Brussels at the Intelligent Cities Challenge Conference & Mayors-Business Forum: from Challenge to Change through Local Green Deals.
A highlight of the event was that Cork was selected among over 60 cities participating in the EU Intelligent Cities Challenge across 18 EU Countries and 5 non-EU countries to receive the ICC award for “Most LGDs signed in the ICC Programme with consistently high quality” for achieving the highest number of high-quality LGDs. This recognition cements Cork’s leadership in sustainability and its commitment to climate action through local collaboration.
Also, Alicia Mateos-Cárdenas, our REEValue & Sustainability lead, joined Paul McGuirk, Senior Executive Officer at Cork City Council and other representatives from Dortmund and Gliwice on a panel discussion on Local Green Deals deployment in the energy sector. Other panel discussions also brought representatives from across other European cities and focused on mobility, tourism, culture and built environment sectors followed by a Mayors–Business Forum.
The conference concluded with a final panel on the future of city-business collaboration, where Oliver Moran, Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork City, presented on Cork’s approach to embedding sustainability into the city’s fabric in which he highlighted the important role Cork Chamber has played. “The key is that it is a whole-of-city collaboration between the city, as an instigator, and all the stakeholders involved. Cork Chamber has been instrumental in this through their commitment to the principles involved, acting as a bridge between the city council and businesses and shoring up leadership among its own members. What they have recognised is that a commitment to sustainability enhances the reputation of the region and increases their attractiveness as employers, which is essential for drawing top talent to our city. Their commitment to the concept of Local Green Deals signifies a strong intention from the business community to engage in these transitions actively.”
Cllr. Oliver Moran, Deputy Lord Mayor, concluded.
At Cork Chamber, we are proud to see Cork City Council being recognised for its leadership in securing an impressive number of Local Green Deals and we are delighted to have enabled and assisted some members to engage with the Local Green Deals process while also delivering our own. This achievement reflects a shared ambition across the city to drive meaningful progress on sustainability. The award highlights the power of collaboration in building a greener, more resilient city region. With businesses, government and the wider community work together, we can make Cork a model for sustainable growth and innovation.

WorkAbility Programme continues to drive inclusive employment
Since its launch in September, the WorkAbility Inclusive Pathways to Employment Programme, a collaboration between SECAD and Cork Chamber, has been making a real impact in helping individuals access meaningful employment. The programme has already facilitated five successful job placements and multiple work experience opportunities.
One such success story is Conor, who recently joined the team at Padel Tennis Ireland in Carrigtwohill. Founders Mark White and Jeremy Coyle have built their business on the belief that sport should be accessible to all, and inclusivity is at the heart of their work. By welcoming Conor to the team, they continue to demonstrate their commitment to making sport a fun, safe, and welcoming space for everyone. Their proactive approach in working with individuals, families, and organisations supporting people with disabilities is a testament to the power of inclusive employment.
Beyond Padel Tennis Ireland, the WorkAbility programme is gaining momentum with other key businesses. Companies such as Sterling Pharma, NetApp, AIB, Morgan McKinley, the board of Cork Chamber, and the board of SECAD are actively engaging with the initiative, exploring ways to support and welcome diverse talent into their workforces. This collective effort is not only transforming lives but also strengthening workplaces by fostering diversity and inclusion. The WorkAbility programme has been instrumental in providing
structured support through weekly workshops, one-to-one mentoring, and tailored training to prepare participants for employment. In response to growing demand, the programme is set to expand its sessions from one to two days per week in 2025, offering even more opportunities for participants to develop skills and confidence.
Vicki Kelly and Naoimh Frawley work closely with businesses to match job seekers with suitable roles. Their efforts have been instrumental in creating successful employment pathways, but more employers are needed to help build on this momentum.
By partnering with WorkAbility, businesses can make a tangible difference in the lives of participants while also enriching their own teams with motivated and skilled individuals.

Cork Chamber Annual Dinner 2025, proudly sponsored by AIB.
Cork stands at a unique juncture, poised to lead Ireland into a future that balances economic growth, sustainability and cultural vibrancy. This was the central message delivered at the Cork Chamber Annual Dinner 2025, where Chamber President Rob Horgan set out a vision for an ambitious and dynamic future for the region.
The flagship event, proudly sponsored by AIB in City Hall on Friday 7th February brought together nearly 1,000 distinguished guests including representatives from the business and political communities. It featured a keynote address by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, his first major address to a business audience since his election as Taoiseach with the evening reaffirming Cork’s leadership in shaping a sustainable, innovative and inclusive business environment.
In his address, Cork Chamber President, Rob Horgan, set out an ambitious vision for Cork, “it is clear that our city and county stand at a unique juncture. Poised to lead Ireland into a future that balances economic growth, sustainability and cultural vibrancy.”
Speaking on the energy opportunity for Cork, Mr Horgan said, “At our fingertips is the opportunity for Cork Harbour to be Ireland’s first energy park. With the ambition, will and the right action taken, we can harness the assets that we have to ensure that they are fit for the energy revolution. “If we don’t make a priority of aligning the policies and funding, the ambition and the action, the greatest opportunity of our generation will be lost.”
Mr Horgan outlined the ‘enabling infrastructure’ essential for Cork to power Ireland’s future prosperity as port infrastructure, grid capacity, energy storage solutions, a skills hub and centre of excellence.
He went on to acknowledge the broader constraints that are holding back economic growth. “Our housing supply, our water infrastructure, our cultural, educational and childcare services and our transport infrastructure”, the chamber president implored the newly formed government to act decisively to harness the opportunities for Cork and Ireland.
As a strong advocate for the enhancement and rejuvenation of Cork’s urban landscapes, Mr Horgan continued “Investing in these spaces is essential to making Cork a place where people and businesses want to be. “Safe, green, accessible and vibrant spaces enhance quality of life, attract talent and importantly, they fuel economic growth.”
The Cork Chamber President also called for a continued commitment to fostering an environment where businesses and communities thrive through inclusivity and connection. Mr Horgan outlined that despite shifts in global landscape, it is hugely important to maintain focus on sustainability, inclusivity and collaboration.
Delivering the keynote address, Taoiseach Micheál Martin acknowledged the great value in the collaboration among the Cork region’s business community. Speaking ahead of the dinner, the Taoiseach said, “Tonight’s gathering is a testament to the fortitude and collaborative spirit that exists in Cork’s business community. The ambition and determination to drive the region’s growth is evident in the many successes across sectors. This government is committed to providing the best possible platform on which those ambitions

can be realised. I thank Cork Chamber for their continued open engagement.”
Colin Hunt, Chief Executive of AIB, sponsors of the event, said “As everyone here tonight knows, Cork Chamber works tirelessly on your behalf, and has done so for businesses for over 200 years. Their vision is to lead a transforming and ambitious Cork City and County. They are one of Ireland’s most active regional advocacy groups, a pioneer in sustainability and a hub of connectivity for global business engagement.”
In closing, Mr Horgan reaffirmed Cork Chamber’s commitment to shaping a vibrant and sustainable future for the region, “Cork is more than just a place to live and work, it is a city of opportunity, connection and belonging. We have the talent, the ambition and the drive to create a thriving future. But it requires strong leadership, collaboration and an unwavering determination to deliver.”

American companies have made substantial investments in Cork over the years, contributing to its reputation as a business and innovation hub. This mission served as an important reminder of Cork’s economic significance, particularly through engagements with US companies in technology, finance, and tourism sectors.
San Francisco holds special importance for Cork City due to their sister city relationship. The Cork City delegation, led by Lord Mayor Dan Boyle, focused on deepening economic ties between Cork and the San Francisco Bay Area. Between 2017 and 2022, the Bay Area invested $30.6 billion in Ireland, with over
10,000 people employed in Cork by Bay Area headquartered companies such as Apple and NetApp. Apple’s Cork site, marking its 45th anniversary, remains one of the largest tech hubs in Europe, employing over 6,000 people. NetApp, which opened its Cork site in 2022, has rapidly expanded, employing over 370 people in engineering and finance roles, showcasing growing interest in Cork’s talent and business environment.
Cork’s financial services sector is another sector of international appeal. With 25 international financial services companies employing over 2,000 professionals, Cork continues to strengthen its position as a European financial hub. As part of its mission, Cork Chamber sponsored Irish Funds events in Greenwich and New York, highlighting Cork’s attractiveness to US investors seeking opportunities in Europe.
In Washington DC, Cork Chamber had the opportunity to engage in high-level meetings and events, including a visit to the White House. This provided a valuable opportunity to connect with business,
political, and civic leaders from both the US and Ireland, further solidifying Cork’s role in the broader US - Ireland economic relationship.
Throughout a packed week of engagements, Cork Chamber President Rob Horgan and CEO Conor Healy attended key events including the Ibec St. Patrick’s Day Dinner at the Dockmaster Building, with notable contributions from Ibec President Anne O’Leary and European Commissioner Michael McGrath. The delegation also joined the Northern Ireland Bureau’s breakfast event to strengthen North-South collaboration on business, innovation and tourism. A visit to The Capitol Building, facilitated by James O’Connor TD, was followed by the Government of Ireland business leaders event where Taoiseach Micheál Martin emphasised the importance of the transatlantic relationship.
The Ireland Funds Gala, which raised over $1 million for charitable projects, offered a standout opportunity to network with influential leaders from across the US and
Ireland. The week concluded with the launch of the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland’s 2025 US - Ireland Business report, reinforcing the strength and potential of this longstanding relationship. Team Ireland, including IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, and Tourism Ireland, were instrumental in supporting Cork’s international economic presence.
The visit to Chicago, led by Councillor Joe Carroll, Mayor of Cork County, was another highlight. This mission, part of Cork County’s sister county relationship with Cook County, emphasised Cork’s appeal as a prime location for US companies seeking to expand into the European market. Key discussions also focused on Cork’s strengths in education and research, with representatives from UCC and MTU. Additionally, the Chicago trip had a strong
tourism theme, with several Cork hotels included in the delegation, helping to showcase Cork as a destination for American tourists and business travellers. In 2023, Cork County Council signed a partnership programme with the Irish Hotels Federation, offering hospitality students from the US the chance to participate in a 12-month working holiday programme in Cork’s hotels, which further strengthens the ties between our tourism sectors.
The mission was a strong statement of Cork’s international profile. The ongoing economic relationship between Cork and the US is crucial for both regions, with trade, investment, and collaboration continuing to drive mutual growth. As Cork seeks to attract new investment, its close ties with the US will continue to play a pivotal role in its future success.
Reflecting on the visit, Cork Chamber CEO Conor Healy said: “It is vital that we continue to maintain and nurture our economic ties and key relationships internationally. Equally, Cork must be represented on the global stage to ensure our city region remains front of mind for investors, and that Cork is consistently spoken of as a dynamic, competitive and welcoming place to do business.”
Cork
As Ireland’s second city region, it is an international gateway to Europe and lies at the centre of the global economies of Asia and the Americas. Cork has a strong track record in attracting and retaining investment. There is a positive can-do attitude with a strong talent pipeline and collaborative inter-agency that inspires confidence in international investors and makes visitors feel instantly welcome.
Offering the perfect combination of vibrant and compact city-living, with spectacular rural and coastal scenery on the doorstep, Cork is full of character and offers a perfect work-life balance.
Powering the future
Nordic-Irish collaboration on energy storage and the grid
By H.E. Lars Thuesen, Ambassador of Denmark to Ireland
The recent Nordic Talks on Energy Storage & The Grid in Cork highlighted the growing collaboration between Ireland and the Nordic countries in renewable energy. The sold-out event, co-hosted by Cork Chamber and the Nordic Embassies, brought together over 100 experts, policymakers, and business leaders to discuss how to build a stable and sustainable energy system. I extend my sincere thanks to Cork Chamber for making this event a success.
I have witnessed Ireland’s progress in its energy transition firsthand. Like Denmark, Ireland has abundant wind resources, and both countries are committed to reducing reliance on fossil fuels. And even on a cloudy day - believe it or not - solar energy is playing an increasing role in Ireland’s electricity production. However, harnessing renewable energy comes with challenges.
Denmark has achieved 100% electricity generation from wind power on certain days. When combined with solar energy, electricity prices can drop below zero, requiring payments to traders to offload excess energy. But when the wind does not blow and the sun does not shine, prices soar.
This is a global issue, but also a major business opportunity for both Ireland and Denmark. A key takeaway from the discussions in Cork was that the technology is ready - and will only improve in the near future. Effective energy storage and a resilient grid can mitigate price volatility and supply insecurity. There is no excuse - wind and solar can play an even greater role in energy supply without compromising grid stability.
Denmark’s experience shows that clear political commitments and interconnectors with neighbouring countries are essential for a renewable-powered grid. Strategic investments in storage will also be crucial in the coming years. Denmark and Ireland are at a pivotal moment, with significant opportunities ahead. There is no doubt that we can develop an energy system that is sustainable, resilient, and cost-effective.
The two panels at Nordic Talks emphasised the need for smarter policies to accelerate storage technology deployment, improve efficiency, and shorten project timelines. The expertise present reaffirmed my belief that Ireland and the Nordics have much to learn from each other. Our shared vision for a green future makes us natural partners.
The next step is to turn discussions into action - aligning investment, innovation, and policy to drive progress. Several Danish energy companies are already active in Ireland, and I am confident that more will establish a presence in Cork in the coming years. Ireland’s potential for offshore wind projects is immense.
At the government level, it is worth noting that Denmark will assume the EU Presidency in the second half of 2025, with a strong focus on implementing the Green Deal, among other key priorities. This is essential not just for climate goals but also for the EU’s global competitiveness. As Denmark’s experience shows, green energy and competitiveness go hand in hand. It is a winning formula.

Brewing a sustainable future with EENergy
As businesses face growing environmental challenges and rising energy costs, adopting energy-efficient and sustainable practices has become essential for long-term success.
In the brewing industry, where energy consumption is high, reducing environmental impact is not only a responsibility but a smart business move. 9 White Deer Brewery, located in Baile Bhúirne, West Cork, showcases how embracing sustainability can lead to both environmental and financial benefits.
A heritage of sustainability
Founded in 2014 by Gordon and Sinéad Lucey, 9 White Deer Brewery draws inspiration from the local legend of Saint Gobnait, who established an abbey in the area after encountering nine white deer. This deep connection to local heritage underlines the brewery’s commitment to tradition and sustainability.
“At 9 White Deer Brewery, sustainability isn’t just an option - it’s our responsibility. Thanks to EENergy, we’re able to push boundaries, innovate, and reduce our impact on both the local and global environment.” Gordon Lucey, Managing Director at 9 White Deer
The EENergy Project: A boost for sustainability
At 9 White Deer Brewery, sustainability has always been at the heart of what they do. Learning about the EENergy project, they saw the opportunity to align with their mission to reduce environmental impact while maintaining quality.
“At Enterprise Europe Network, we often see SMEs with big plans but limited funds. The EENergy project offers a unique chance for businesses to receive financial support for energy efficiency improvements, along with personalised guidance from our sustainability advisors.”
Monica
Valdes,
EEN Advisor at
Cork Chamber
The EENergy is an initiative that offered grants of up to €10,000 to help SMEs improve energy efficiency. The project was launched in two separate calls in 2024. As part of the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) through Cork Chamber, the initiative supported businesses in creating and implementing energy-saving action plans. Participating SMEs had to develop and implement a detailed action plan that targeted a minimum 5% improvement in energy efficiency to qualify for the grant.
With guidance from EEN Cork Chamber, 9 White Deer Brewery developed an action plan and conducted a sustainability assessment, identifying key steps to reduce energy consumption. It was a straightforward process, with the brewery appreciating its streamlined approach and emphasis on measurable outcomes. Thanks to this support, the brewery was awarded the EENergy grant in June 2024, enabling them to accelerate their sustainability initiatives with financial backing and expert guidance.
Energy efficiency initiatives
To reduce their carbon footprint and energy consumption, 9 White Deer Brewery used the EENergy grant to install a nitrogen generator. Traditionally, the brewery relied
on purchasing nitrogen and CO2 in tanks, an energy-intensive and costly process. Producing CO2 alone required 38,188 kWh of energy. With the new generator, energy consumption dropped to 10,271 kWh, with 39% self-produced. This investment has significantly reduced both energy use and CO2 emissions.
EENergy is part of a broader sustainability effort. In 2024, the brewery invested €50,000 solar in photovoltaic (PV) panel installation, which supplies 39% of the brewery’s electricity needs. The brewery is committed to continuous improvement and plans to enhance energy efficiency in its production processes, implement thermal energy storage, and reduce its reliance on gas for steam generation.
Sustainability as a smart business strategy
For 9 White Deer Brewery, sustainability is not just an ethical obligation—it’s also a smart business strategy. With rising energy costs and the pressure to lower carbon emissions, investing in renewable energy and energy-efficient technology helps the brewery stay competitive while achieving long-term savings.
The EENergy project has helped the brewery to accelerate this transition, supporting them in making meaningful and lasting changes to their business. Every pint produced at 9 White Deer Brewery brings them closer to a cleaner, greener brewing industry while staying true to their core values of quality, dedication, and sustainability.
