J

. Drew Lanham — the self-dubbed "Black Birder" — has made it his mission to bring people of color into conservation and the ecological sciences, and to help conservation and science organizations do the same.

He champions what he calls "coloring the conservation conversation."

"It's really, for me and my work, not as much about pulling people into careers as it is having them understand the importance of nature and taking care of it," Lanham told City Newspaper.

The Seneca Park Zoo Society and Rochester Institute of Technology's Office for Diversity and Inclusion will bring Lanham to Rochester for a free talk at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27. The talk is titled, "The Uncomfortable Elephant Bird of Color in 'The Black Birder” the Room — Addressing the Coming Changes in Conservation," and will focus on how to make conservation and the conservation sciences more accessible and inclusive. It'll be held at RIT's College of Liberal Arts auditorium, and it is open to the public.

Lanham will also meet with RIT students, fifth and sixth graders at School 3, and youth at the Humboldt Recreation Center. Conservation groups, science organizations, and government agencies have noticed the lack of diversity in conservation work, too. Pamela Reed Sanchez, executive director of the Seneca Park Zoo Society, says that there is a "dearth of applicants of color" for open jobs at her organization. The society is the educational arm of the zoo and its staff should reflect the communities it serves, she says.

Lanham's interest in better connecting people to nature grows out of his scientific interest in the effects of forest management on wildlife. His studies led him to explore how people think about the connection between land and birds, he says.

Conservation should blend science and art, he says. Lanham's writing and talks blend themes of nature, culture, ethnicity, and race; sometimes he uses an introspective, memoir-style approach, while other times his work is illuminating but tonguein-cheek. Ousted African-American Teacher Files Racial Discrimination Lawsuit Against Elmwood Franklin School

V

eteran teacher, Shellonnee B. Chinn, has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York against Buffalo’s Elmwood Franklin School charging the school with wrongful termination, race, sex and age discrimination. After working at Elmwood Franklin for nearly 15 years, and being the only African-American classroom teacher ever hired by the 127 year-old elite private school, Ms. Chinn was ousted from the school in 2015. Elmwood Franklin School enrolls just over 300 students in prekindergarten through eighth grades.

Her ouster was, in part, retaliation because she disclosed that the academic outcomes of students paying nearly $20,000 per year at Elmwood Franklin were worse than some of Buffalo’s free public schools.

Mayor Byron W. Brown recently received the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Partner America 2016 “Small Business Advocate Award” for his efforts and support of small business in the City of Buffalo. Chinn Paul Geraci, Jr. Joan Simmons, head of the Niagara Frontier Movement for the Advocacy of African-American Human Rights, and Ken Nixon, of the locally based Center For Strategic Studies on Race,Law and Public Policy, Inc.said their research has shown that while local, secular private schools may hire African-American teachers in non-classroom positions, none of seven such schools west of Rochester has an African-American teacher in a core, classroom position.

Attica 1971…..Never Forget…

For 11 years, Prisoners Are People Too, Inc. has devoted time and space to the Attica Uprising of September 1971. At our September monthly meetings, we have featured films, live guest speakers, and panel discussions that have helped us to have a better understanding of why the revolt occurred, how it evolved from September 9 to September 13, who were the major figures involved, and what happened to make this one of the best known and most significant rebellions of the Prisoners’ Rights Movement. Though commonly referred to as a riot….this was NOT a riot.

It was a demand for political rights and better living conditions.

It was a revolt against the insensitive prison administration. It was a rebellion that happened as a result of the abuse, brutality, violence and racism that prisoners experienced on a daily basis. The evil that defined Attica then, is a critical part of the Attica we know today, forty-five years later. Articles have been written, voices have been raised, and petitions have been signed about closing a place that is “infamous for bloodshed.”

In 1971, the prisoners issued a “manifesto of 27 demands” which included a call for legal representation at parole hearings, improved medical care, adAMIN equate conditions for visiting family members, and an end to racial, political, and religious persecution. There were demands for better food, an end to overcrowding, opportunities for education and vocational training, and a policy giving working prisoners wages that conformed with state and federal minimum wage laws. Most working prisoners made less than fifty cents an hour. Prisoners were allowed only one shower per week and one roll of toilet paper each month. The New York state correction commissioner, Russell Oswald, ignored this “manifesto.” The prisoners, mostly Black and Latino also demanded that the prison’s warden, Vincent Mancusi, be fired and that all participants in the uprising receive full amnesty. Outside observers, requested by the prisoners, had minimal input but they were there to mediate and negotiate. Buffalo’s Arthur O. Eve, who was then the Deputy Speaker of the NYS Assembly, was a well-known voice for the prisoners. He was the first official to enter this maximum security facility to hear the demands of the prisoners. At a PRP2 meeting in September 2012, Mr. Eve (now in his 80s) said that it’s hard for him to talk about Attica but he understands the importance of the history and he urged us to never stop fighting for justice.

Negotiations came to a halt when the prisoners took 39 prison guards and employees as hostages.

Gov. Rockefeller refused to meet with the prisoners, following President Nixon’s directions. Oswald, Mancusi, and Rockefeller stood together when the governor ordered the State Troopers and National Guardsmen to retake the prison. In the massacre that followed, 43 hostages and prisoners were killed.

A

lthough this is unknown to many, there are up to 100,000 people of African descent in the nation of Turkey. A legacy of the Ottoman Empire and of the African slave trade, AfroTurks, as they are called, have lost their language and have a renewed interest in discovering who they are and from whence they came.

As The Global Dispatches reported in 2010, while slavery existed in the Ottoman Empire from the 14th century until the 19th century, enslaved people came from the Balkans and the Caucasus until the late 1800s, with the abolition of “white” slavery in these regions after pressure from the European nations.

Before that time, the trading in Black people had been limited, but then, the trading of enslaved Africans to the Ottoman Empire grew, particularly from Kenya and Sudan. Between 1860 and 1890, around 10,000 enslaved Africans were sent into the Ottoman Empire each year, a total of about 250,000 people, with many freed at some point. Many enslaved people were sent to the cotton fields near Smyrna (now known as Izmir) on the coast of the Aegean Sea. But it wasn’t until the early 20th century that the end of slavery came, as enslaved people were replaced by paid servants. And in 1924, the Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk established laws of equal citizenship in the country’s new constitution.

n Saturday, September 24, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. will open to the public. It is The only national museum devoted exclusively to African American culture.It’s been a long journey and it hasn’t been easy. Thirteen years since Congress and President George W. Bush authorized its construction, the 400,000-square-foot building stands on a five-acre site on the National Mall, close to the Washington Monument. President Obama will speak at its opening dedication. The building’s three-tiered shape evokes a traditional Yoruban crown. The exterior corona is made of 3,600 bronzecolored cast-aluminum panels. The distinctive architecture alternatively symbolizes hands lifted in prayer, in what the museum says is an expression of faith, hope and resilience. It was conceived by Ghanaian-born architect David Adjaye.

Sharon West Shares News of Family’s Donation to the African American History Museum Sharon West of Buffalo recently shared the news of her Father’s donation to the new African-American History and Culture Museum. It is the first edition of the autobiography book, “The Life of Olaudah Equiano.” It recounts being kidnapped from Africa and bind sold into slavery.

He brought his freedom and became part of the abolition movement. He is considered the original or of the slave narrative. The book was published in 1789. Sharon’s grandmother, Mary Jane brought it. “ I remember her showing it to me as a teenager and explaining its importance,” she wrote. The book is located in the section of

Autumn is the Time to Care for Your Lungs, Large Intestine and Skin

O

n the fall equinox, occurring September 22 (the first day of Autumn) day and night are equal in length everywhere on the planet. The sun rises precisely in the east, arcs through the day for 12 hours and sets exactly in the west, disappearing for another 12 hours.

Fall is a time to relish the abundance of food at the end of the growing season to reflect with gratitude on all we have been given in our lives; to seek balance and harmony in our inner and outer worlds; to release physical and emotional baggage; and the cleanse and prepare for a period of deep introspection. It is a time of letting go, particularly of all grief and attachments.

Organs In our bodies, the organs associated with the fall period are the lungs and large intestine, which govern the skin. Fall is associated with the metal element, so this season is fitting for assessing your metal overload and mineral balance.

Large Intestine

After the small intestine has completed its digestion of food, the large intestine receives what remains, absorbing water and the minerals calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and copper with the help of the bowel bacteria.

Fall Foods Ideal foods for maintaining your health in the fall tend to be foods that are grow in or harvested during the season.

Fiber: Fiber increases the frequency of bowel movements and decreased toxicity. The highest fiber foods are legumes such as kidney beans, chickpeas, black beans, lentils, mung beans, azuki beans, rice bran, wheat bran, oat bran, ground flaxseed and psyllium. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains also contain fiber. High-fiber diets will reduce your risk of colon cancer significantly. Colon cancer is the third largest cause of cancer deaths in women in Canada and the United States, after lung and breast cancer.

Food high in beta carotene: Beta carotene protects the mucus membranes of the body, strengthens immunity and guards against cancer. Foods high in beta carotene include carrots, seaweed potatoes, squash, pumpkin, seaweeds, chlorella, algae, kale, parsley, cilantro, broccoli, spinach, beet greens and turnip.

Foods to avoid: Foods that aggravate the lungs and colon should be minimized or avoided. These include dairy, meat, wheat, sugar, saturated fats and heated oils.

Buffalo State Earns Top-30 National Ranking from Washington Magazine SUNY Buffalo State ranks 26th nationally in Washington Monthly magazine’s 2016 master’s universities rankings released recently Washington Monthly's college rankings rate schools based on their contribution to the public good across three broad themes: social mobility, research, and service. African American males have the lowest graduation rate of any demographic group in the nation. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has designed the EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) to be implemented in local chapters all over the country. The Buffalo Alumae Chapter has planned a day of workshops and a town hall forum to address education, leadership, healthy lifestyle choices, character, relationships, college readiness, job readiness, and civic engagement.

“Our goal is to inspire, compel and empower the young African-American males in our community to become successful, independent leaders locally and beyond.,”said chapter President, Dr. Mattie L. Rhodes. “ We recognize that a key missing ingredient for many is the presence of positive male role models.

37 Homicides, Zero Tolerance

Of the 37 homicides that have taken place in Buffalo this year, only seven o f them have been cleared by formal charges being brought against the accused.

B

uffalo is seeing an unprecedented collapse of its police force’s ability to bring violent criminals to justice, even as it continues to pursue a controversial zero-tolerance policing strategy. Of the 37 homicides that have taken place in Buffalo this year, only seven of them have been cleared by formal charges being brought against the accused.

At the same time, fault lines have appeared in the city’s relationship with the office of interim Erie County District Attorney Michael Flaherty. Those fault lines are dwarfed, however, by potential chasms in the relationship between the Buffalo Police Department and its citizens.

City officials have been trying to put a good face on its response to recent violence. At the outset of a July that saw 37 shootings, a spokesman for Buffalo Police insisted there wasn’t a crime wave.

“When you have a number of incidents in a short time span, it gives the impression that things are worse than they really might be based on numbers over the long haul of the year,” Buffalo Police Lieutenant Jeffrey Rinaldo said at a press conference, according to Aaron Besecker of the Buffalo News.

July was followed by an even bloodier August.

When the victims involved in the city’s illicit market for drugs and weapons, the deaths are labelled “gang-related.” When the victims are innocent bystanders, they are “senseless act of violence.” Sometimes the official narratives cross, as was the case when eight-year-old Donnell Bibbes was struck by “senseless” gunfire last month intended for his older brothers, described as “gang members” by the police.

A few weeks ago, the city’s prioritization of the “senseless” variety of victims was revealed at a press conference, where $2,500 of cash rewards were announced for information leading to arrests and convictions related to the five of the 2016 victims who were unintended targets of the gunfire that wounded or killed them.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda and Mayor Byron Brown announced that police are close to solving several recent shootings, but needed more information to make arrests.

As for the families of the victims of the remaining 25 uncleared homicides, Derenda told WBFO, “I want the victims from other families, the victims we’re not highlighting today, to know that we are working on their cases also. We will be announcing more rewards in the near future.”

The issue of the community not coming forward to assist in homicide investigations and the city’s deplorable clearance rate stretch back several years. In early 2015, both Investigative Post and The Public published articles on the subject. In brief: The city’s homicide clearance rate since 2013 is 35 percent, and many leaders in the African-American community lament that getting people to come forward with tips to help solve crimes has become difficult and rare.

Under Brown, the city’s police force has pursued a statisticsdriven model of “broken windows” policing. It is possible that this policy has led to growing resentment of police in exactly the community that is being asked to come forward with information.

In mostly African-American neighborhoods that the Buffalo Police Department has determined to be high-crime areas, they have focused on low-level offenses such as trespass, code violations, and vehicle-related violations and crimes, using constitutionally questionable checkpoints as a crime-suppression tool.

summonses for non-violent offenders, creating an economic obstacle for many.

Michael DeGeorge, spokesperson for the mayor and the Buffalo Police Department, told The Public that the net effect of zero-tolerance policing is the lowest number of “Part 1” violent crimes in the city’s history.

Last month, the Department of Justice levied a damning critique of Baltimore’s zero-tolerance police practices, noting a direct correlation between the policy and the erosion of community support for police: “Baltimore PD’s legacy of zero tolerance enforcement continues to drive its policing in certain Baltimore neighborhoods and leads to unconstitutional stops, searches, and arrests. Many BPD supervisors instruct officers to make frequent stops and arrests—even for minor offenses and with minimal or no suspicion—without sufficient consideration of whether this enforcement strategy promotes public safety and community trust or conforms to constitutional standards,” reads one section.

“Indeed, current BPD Commissioner Davis and his predecessor, Anthony W. Batts, have both acknowledged publicly that the zero tolerance approach to policing eroded community trust and impeded efforts to build partnerships that are central to effective policing,” reads another.

“In the fall of 2014, [Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s] administration noted that the zero tolerance strategy ‘ignited a rift between the citizens and the police, which still exists today’ and that there is a ‘broken relationship’ between law enforcement officials and community members,” reads yet another.

Baltimore started its zero-tolerance program in the late 1990s, in the wake of New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s adoption of “broken windows” policing. Zero-tolerance policing was a major theme of Byron Brown’s first campaign for mayor, and he rang it in citywide when he assumed office in 2006.

A recent Open Buffalo survey—which was heavily criticized by the Buffalo News for not interviewing a proportionate number of Whites and offering little analysis of the information it did provide—revealed that many Blacks simply don’t trust the police. Only around 40 percent of Blacks said they trusted the police to help them when they need it, and only 20 percent believed that police respect people of color.

Only 50 percent of the Black males surveyed indicated they would call police if they knew something violent was going to happen. For Black women, White men, and White women, those numbers were only 60, 65, and 75 percent respectively.

Furthermore, there appears to be a lingering animosity between Buffalo Police and the DA’s office, stemming from the administration of Flaherty’s predecessor, Frank A. Sedita III. During a recent debate of DA candidates hosted by the Buffalo Association of Black Journalists, former Deputy District Attorney Mark Sacha attacked Flaherty’s record of poor homicide clearances, noting that, according to his own research, Buffalo’s homicide clearance rate was among the worst in the country. Flaherty, who became DA after Sedita vacated the post to become a judge in January, deflected the attack onto the Buffalo Police, telling Sacha he should take that query up with Derenda.

In the meantime, attorney John Flynn—another Democratic challenger for Flaherty’s office—has scarfed up the lion’s share of endorsements from area police labor organizations, including the Buffalo PBA, the Amherst Police Club, the Cheektowaga Police Club, the Town of Tonawanda Police Club, and the City of Tonawanda PBA. 13thPrimary). “ The DA’s office and law enforcement have no relationship,” Flynn claimed to The Public after the debate. Flynn accused the DA’s office of an “arrogant attitude” when it came down to which cases they would try.

“Just take the Moss case,” Flynn said, referencing the controversial 2013 hit-and-run death of Town of Evans man, Barry Moss. “The Evans police told them from day one we have enough evidence here. [Sedita and Flaherty] thought they knew it all, they thought they knew all the answers. They cherry-pick their cases, they don’t take on tough cases. They take cases based on their narrow self-interest, and that has to stop.”

Flaherty has not yet responded to efforts for comment.

Flaherty was viewed by his challengers as Sedita 2.0, causing him to repeatedly mention during the debate that he was not Frank Sedita, but his own man. A radical tactic, given the traditional power of incumbency in local races.

Chicago has passed another horrid milestone, the Chicago Tribune reports. As of last week, at least 3,028 people have been shot in the crime-ridden city—surpassing the toll of 2,980 for all of 2015, the Tribune notes. Over the Labor Day weekend, Chicago’s homicides climbed past 500, already surpassing the 481 deaths that occurred in all of last year.According to the Tribune, almost one-third of the more than 3,000 shootings took place in three police districts in the West Side: Harrison, where 423 people were shot this year, compared with last year’s 237; Austin, where 265 were shot, compared with last year’s 112; and Ogden, where 232 people were shot, compared with 106 last year. In the South Side’s Englewood neighborhood, 324 people have been shot so far.

Bills Fired The Wrong Man!

T

he Bills took a beating from an experienced New York Jets football team 37-24 last Thursday night.

T h e R y a n brother’s s o r r y defense could not stop them at all; only a Jets turn over GEORGE resulting RADNEY in a Bills touchdown kept the game close.

The Jets controlled the game from beginning to end with a whopping 375 total offensive yards. Bills Head Coach Rex

Ryan’s so—called dominating defense does not have a pass rush, it mainly relies on confusing the opposing quarterback into making a mistake and throwing an interception.

Rex has totally messed up the roster by getting rid of quality cornerback Ross Cockerell and linebacker Arthur Moats both starting for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bills would not have needed to draft Ronald Darbt with Ross already here, but Rex has to do things his way or the highway.

Jets quarterback Ryan Fritzpatrick embarrassed the Bills defense which could not stop them by getting the ball to wide outs all night long. Jerry Hughes was our only effective pass rusher who was stopped after the Jets made

It’s a fact Kyle Williams is useless without Marcell Dareus being in the line up being double teamed in order for Kyle to be effective. Its time for Kyle to gracefully retire after the season because he stayed one to two years too long.

The Bills offense was better but the offensive line without Cordy Glenn and Seantrel Henderson is a major blow to the team. The Bills can’t run the ball without them being in the lineup. Bills center Eric Wood is a disgrace and should be benched immediately!! All you had to see was the failed quarterback sneak attempts by E.J. Manuel and realize Wood can’t get a push on most defensive linemen in the NFL. He’s another player that should not have made this team.

Tyrod Taylor does not have time to throw the ball and one solution will be to have a moving pocket allowing Tyrod to see downfield with the option of running if needed. It was Tyrod’s ability to move away from pressure that led to two deep passes for touchdowns to marquise Goodwin and Greg Salas. The Bills gained a total 393 total yards while the Jets were 493 yards in the game.

That stat shows us Rex Ryan’s defense lost this game, not the offense.

The surprise firing of Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman shows a desperate franchise wanting to win at all cost. The Bills fired the wrong man! In this case it should have been Rex Ryan and his sorry ass brother Rob, who both are dinosaurs in today’s NFL. The Bills defense looks nothing like the dominating unit that Jim Schwartz coached to 4th best defense in the league.

If rumors are true, according to an article by Ian Rapport on NFL.com . the Pegulas’ met with Greg Roman after meeting with the offensive unit. This shows a total dysfunction of the team from owners on down to players.

Why would the owners meet with the players? Why would the owners meet with coaches without the head coach being in the meeting? This shows

complete ignorance as to how a professional football team is run and operated. Bills General Manager Doug Whaley should be meeting with the head coach and his staff to determine if any changes are needed. But the Bills organization has not given Whaley power to run the team, and he is the only one with NFL experience in running a team.

It’s not an accident that both the Bills and Sabres are in last place in their respective prosports leagues. The Pegula’s Continued Page14
