Bikers will meet at the downtown Holiday Inn parking lot, 70 State St. A Meet and Greet at 8:30 a.m. will take place prior to kickstands up at 9 a.m. The ride ends at 10:30 a.m.

Some of the best bicycle racers in the world will race Saturday night. They have chosen to enjoy a slow sightseeing bike tour of the City with the people who ride here every day, and we have a lot to show them!

e finally get to see the rookies of the Buffalo Bills 2018 NFL Draft class.

The Bills have signed most of their draft picks which is a common practice by most NFL teams, but the uncommon practice by the Bills is not to sign their players to year 3 of a 4 year deals. They instead allow their players to leave and sign with other teams for the NFL going rate. It’s a shame the George Bills continue to draft good football players but refuse to keep them due to the philosoRADNEY phy of “The Bean Counter” Jim Overdorf, who continues to control the purse strings.

Tremaine Edmunds is the real deal and can possibly become the next Ray Lewis. He has all the tools but once he becomes good at the middle linebacker position will the Bills keep him or like most previous draft picks, allow him to go to another team?

Why did the Bills move up to draft QB Josh Allen who and most likely could have been selected at the 12th position?

He has all the tools of a 1970’s style QB – a big, tall strong arm White boy, not too bright for reading defenses and one dimensional. Wait a minute!!

Am I talking about Jim Kelly?

No I’m talking about Josh Allen, a kid out of a small town in Northern California who played college ball at Wyoming and also put out racial slurs on twitter. Josh played four games against big time college football opponents going 0-4 with 1 touchdown pass and 8 interceptions. I wish I was making this stuff up, but sadly I’m not and judging by Josh’s statistics and raw ability he should be an undrafted free agent.

Yes the Bills have botched the 2018 NFL Draft and by not having 2nd round draft picks they now must rely on at least 20 undrafted free agents to make the roster due to Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott’s mishandling of the team roster in 2017. So maybe its fitting that the Bills drafted a QB that really is an undrafted free agent, because a large portion of the 2018 roster will be made up of them. I would not be surprised to see Bills RB LeSean McCoy traded by June 1st or by the beginning of preseason to get a veteran offensive lineman or wide receiver. These are two positions that Beane & McDermott did not address during the draft. They actually drafted former NFL player Ricky Proehler’s son, who’s on the Carolina coaching staff Continued Page 7

HONORED: Erie County Legislator Barbara Miller-Williams (right) issued a proclamation honoring Paulette Woods (left) for her 36 years as a public servant in Erie County last week. Legislator Miller-Williams cited Ms. Woods distinguished career in public service that began when she was hired by Erie County Executive Ed Rutkowski to serve in the Budget Division as a Senior Budget Examiner, the first African American to do so. She went on to serve as Chief Fiscal Officer for the Erie County Youth Detention Service Department, as well as for Erie County Youth, Detention and Probation Departments.In addition, she is a veteran of the United States Military, serving 6 years in the 402nd Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne) and two years in the inactive reserve. hen an early morning fire closed the iconic GiGi’s restaurant in November over two years ago it left the community devastated. The Black owned and operated soul food eatery was a permanent and positive fixture in the area for over 50 years.

A tragedy of another sort now faces the neighborhood in the very spot where GiGi’s once stood – but it’s one that the community has rallied together to stop.

It had been rumored for the past several weeks that the new owner of the building, which once housed GiGi’s Restaurant , was planning to open a liquor store.

That “rumor” has now been confirmed. In late February, Free Lane Liquors, Inc. filed an application with the New York State Liquor Authority for a liquor store license at the 257 East Ferry Street address.

For Ahmed Selah, other business leaders, local clergy and residents, that news is as devastating as the fire that gutted the building .

Saleh, the owner of Mandella Mart, is in the forefront of the fight to organize the community to stop the liquor store from opening, which he feels will drive the property value down among other negatives. When he established Mandella’s seven years ago it literally brought the corner of Jefferson and East Ferry back to life after being empty for some 30 years. Selah has enlisted and won, the support of some powerful political allies – New York State Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes and New York State Senator Timothy M. Kennedy. A petition drive opposed to the proposed new business has gathered over 450 signatures so far.

Ahmed Selah “As a community we have to stand up and say that this is wrong,” Mr. Selah told The Challenger. One of the main concerns he said was that the business would encourage loitering and crime in a community working hard to maintain its dignity.

In a letter to the chairman of the New York State Liquor Authority, Assemblywoman PeoplesStokes and Senator Kennedy urged the authority to reject the application for a liquor store license by Free Lane Liquors, Inc. “Our offices have heard from multiple neighbors, including businesses and residents, who believe that the local community is already well-served by existing liquor stores,” they wrote.

“While we are heartened to see an interest in bringing this storefront back to life, we do not believe that another liquor store will contribute in a positive manner to the fabric of the neighborhood…

We urge you to reject this application in order to provide a new opportunity for a more productive use of the site to be found.”

Tim Hall, the owner of The Ink Spot, a copy, printing and postal service center, echoed Mr. Selah’s concern about the property being negatively affected. Mr. Hall, who has been at his 1440 Jefferson Avenue location for seven ( right around the corner from the former GiGi’s), was personally disheartened by the sale and liquor store plans because he said that he and two others made an offer of six figures to buy the building prior to it being sold to Tesgai Mesfin for $88,000. Hall said their plans were to renovate the building and re-open it as a family restaurant.

“We made a personal bid for it,” he said. “We certainly don’t need another Liquor store in the neighborhood.”

Rev. C.M. Jenkins II, Senior Pastor of Zion Missionary Baptist Church, was passionate in his objection to the opening of a retail liquor store just a few doors from his church.

Expressing “great concerns” about the potential opening of such an establishment he stated: “For the future endeavors of our community regarding 257 E. Ferry Street, it is my determination along with other local clergymen and leaders, concerned residents and well rooted business owners, to employ that same community unity be maintained at this location by an establishment that will enhance families, promote safety and not bring more harm to our neighborhood than good. Another retail liquor store does not meet any of the few listed enhancement requirements.”

Ahmed made it clear that he and other members of the community welcome a variety of new businesses, but strongly object to current plans to open another liquor store.

Petitions are still being circulated and he said he hopes to announce a community meeting to address the issue in the very near future. Mr. Selah can be reached at his establishment at Jefferson and E. Ferry at 882-0288.

Make Malcolm X Great Again In 1964 Malcolm X announced his plans to drag the American Government before the United Nations and World Court and charge her with violating the Human Rights of Black Americans. Said Malcolm responding to the White press during a press conference on that issue: “I would be not a man if I was in a position to bring it (our struggle) in front of the United nations and didn’t do so…I wouldn't be a man.”

he year before he was assassinated, Malcolm X launched, in 1964, a campaign to convince African states to raise the question of persecution of American Negroes at the United Nations.

He started his campaign July 17 in Cairo that year, where the 33 heads of independent African states held their second meeting since the Organization of African Unity was founded in Addis Ababa 14 months prior.

Before leaving for Cairo, Malcolm told friends in New York that it was his intention to add a new dimension to the civil rights struggle in the United States. This, he said, could be achieved by “internationalizing” the Negro question at the United Nations in the manner that South African apartheid was transferred into an international problem.

Malcolm presented an eightpage memorandum to the heads of state at the Cairo conference requesting their support which read in part: “The American Government is either unable or unwilling to protect the lives and property of your 22 million AfricanAmerican brothers and sisters.

South Africans Protest Gaza Killings

South Africans take part in a protest against Israel in Cape Town, South Africa on Tuesday. South African Jews for a Free Palestine joined the human rights and Palestine solidarity movement calling for a Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel as they marched to South Africa’s parliament in protest against the Israeli governments actions in Gaza. South Africa confirmed it has withdrawn its ambassador to Israel following the attacks on protesters in Gaza. Gaza had its bloodiest day in years on Monday after Israeli forces shot and killed 60 Palestinians and wounded at least 1,200 as tens of thousands protested along the frontier against the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem. The violent scenes contrasted sharply with the glossy inauguration of Washington’s new mission about 60 miles away in an affluent Jerusalem neighborhood. The US president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, celebrated the opening to clapping and cheering from American and Israeli VIPs.

Safari And Game Park Schemes Are Wreaking Havoc On The Lives And Livelihoods Of The Maasai

KAMPALA, Uganda — Tens of thousands of Tanzania’s ethnic Maasai people are homeless after the government burned their houses to keep the savannah open for tourism benefiting two foreign safari companies, a U.S.-based policy think tank recently charged . “As tourism becomes one of the fastest-growing sectors within the Tanzanian economy, safari and game park schemes are wreaking havoc on the lives and livelihoods of the Maasai,” said Oakland Institute’s Anuradha Mittal. “But this is not just about a specific company – it is a reality that is all too familiar to indigenous communities around the world.” Allegations of wrongdoing have persisted in recent years against Tanzania Conservation Limited, an affiliate of U.S.-based Thomson Safaris, and Ortello, a group that organizes hunting trips for the royal family of the United Arab Emirates.

Housing Discrimination: The Devil’s in the Details

Some recent home buyers have been alarmed to find their deeds contain blunt, racist and exclusionary language informing them that African-Americans are not allowed to buy the homes they now own.

“No person other than one of the Caucasian race shall be permitted to occupy any portion of any lot ...or any building thereon except a domestic servant actually employed by a Caucasian occupant of said lot or building,” reads one such restriction in Washington state.

“What I didn’t know was that this language was still in the deed,” recounted Julie Fahey, a Democrat in the Oregon House of Representatives from Eugene. In February, Fahey, who is White, successfully sponsored a bill to facilitate the removal of offensive covenant language after encountering such a deed upon buying her house in June 2015. Though well aware of America’s long and ongoing history of racial and ethnic discrimination in housing policy, the lawmaker admitted to being “surprised” by the blunt nature of the covenant. The legislation, recently signed into law by the governor, addresses the costs and difficulties of removing such language.

Though such racist covenants were outlawed by the Fair Housing Act of 1968, the language has remained on deeds across the country due to the legal complexities and costs involved in removing them. Along with Oregon and Washington, whites-only covenants remain on property deeds in California, Missouri, South Carolina and numerous other states. In 2009, the California Legislature passed a bill to have racist covenants purged upon the purchase of a property, only to have the legislation vetoed by then-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger because of associated costs and the fact that residents can request to have the covenants removed.

On Thursday, May 10th Governor Cuomo and the Division of Housing and Community Renewal (HCR) announced $22 Million towards 7 affordable housing projects in western New York. Four of these seven projects are located in Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes’ 141st District, specifically the East side of Buffalo, and equates to roughly $11 million of state investment.

The remainder includes two projects in North Tonawanda and one in Wellsville.

Olive Community Development Corporation will convert a vacant property on East Delavan Avenue near the Northland Corridor into 8 workforce apartments and demolish another dilapidated structure to create surface parking for residents. $1.7 Million for Cigar Factory Apartments: Broadway-Fillmore Neighborhood Housing Services is building and adaptively reusing a historic former cigar factory site and historic garage on Fillmore Avenue into 4 workforce apartments and the new construction of a 7-unit residential and commercial building. Cigar Factory Apartments will be located within the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood. This project is one of many catalysts that will soon be underway to reinvigorate this community. $3.9 Million for ELIM Townhouse: ELIM Community Development Corporation will construct 5 townhouse buildings for a total of 30 homes next to the Highland Park Development Project at the former Central Park Plaza site.

Fasting: A Means of Spiritual, Mental & Physical Rejuvenation he blessed month of Ramadan is anticipated to begin on the evening of May 15. 2018. It is the most sacred month in the Islâmic calendar and one in which fasting is required of all adult, sane Muslims who are not traveling or suffering from chronic health conditions. It is an act of submission and obedience to the Lord of the heavens and earth. He says: “Fasting is prescribed for you as was prescribed for those who came before you so that, perhaps, you may learn piety.”

Just as Islâm is not a new religion, fasting is also an ancient tradition that has been the practice of religious communities continuously. That is because the same truth that has been continuously revealed through all of the messengers and Prophets of Allâh (God Almighty) throughout time. In the above mentioned passage it is mentioned that fasting is “prescribed” or written as an obligation as it was for “those who came before” us. In the epochs of antiquity, man sustained himself primarily on vegetation, fruit and other natural products of the earth including hunting and trapping of animals.

Because food supply was often in question for various reasons, it became necessary for man to focus his attention upon food production and retention. Often, in this case before his methods became sophisticated, and reliable, fasting became a way of life because of depletion of food resources. Superstition and ignorance combined to form the idea of this fasting as a religious duty or spiritual exercise. Some forms of paganism viewed such abstinence as necessary because the deities that they believed in and worshiped were jealous of the pleasures that men enjoyed and that by fasting they would gain favors with them.

For one fifth of the world’s population Islâm is both a religion and a complete way of life which is based on the principles of peace, justice, mercy and forgiveness. It is the way of life (deen) prescribed for mankind in order to ensure success in the present world that we live in and in the world to come Hereafter. It is not only a religion but a particular way of life that is distinct, unique and has many dimensions. Its most essential belief is that there is nothing whatsoever that is deserving of worship excepT Allâh, the Most High and also that Muhammad is the last and final, messenger of Allâh who came as a continuation and completion of the work of previous divine Prophets such s Noah, Abraham , Moses and Jesus peace be upon all of them.

Among the People of the Book (ahlul kitaab) which includes Christians and Jews, fasting is a matter of scripture and prophetic tradition. Their fasting was a part of religious practice as seen in the example of the Day of Atonement which is practiced by the Jewish community to the present day. There is no mention of any other particular fast in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible except in Zechariah. from theses verses, it seems that the Bani-Israel, during their years of captivity, observed fasting in the fourth, fifth, seventh and tenth months for a total of four annually. Zechariah distinguishes the fasts by the months in which they were to be observed.

Bob Marley’s Grandaughter Latest Victim of Police Being Called on Black Folks Says Cops Approached with Their Hands on Their Holsters, Shouting The granddaughter of reggae music legend Bob Marley is speaking out in the wake of a harrowing encounter with Rialto, Calif. police she says left she and her friends fearful for their lives.

Donisha Prendergast said she and her friends (two Black, one White) were checking out of the Airbnb they rented last month when a neighbor who did not recognize them called the police to report a burglary in progress. The women, all aspiring filmmakers, were loading their luggage into a car in the driveway at the time.

The nosy neighbor claimed she smiled and waved at the unfamiliar faces, but got no response. She thought it suspicious and picked up the phone to call 911.

Within minutes, the group of friends were swarmed by police as they headed to their next destination. A police helicopter was even called in and a section of the road blocked off to keep them from fleeing. Prendergast and her friends were detained and questioned for close to 20 minutes before the cops let them go. Video of the incident went viral on social media and has become one of the latest incidents of the police being called on Black folks for absolutely no reason. In an interview with The Grio, Pendergast said she felt she and her friends deserved to be treated with more respect. ” … We find the response from the police and their use of the words ‘respect’ and ‘dignity’ about the situation to be skewed,” she said. “When they jumped out of their vehicle and shouted at us to put our hands up with their hands on their holsters unclipped and ready, I don’t think that’s a respectful way to engage anyone.”

“We aren’t used to people speaking to us in that kind of disrespectful tone,” Prendergast added. “We demanded of them that they treat us with the respect that is due to us.”

Studio J Celebrates 5th Fantastic Year!

Jayme Glover-Smith – Innovative and Creative; Taking the Art of Dance to the Next Level

By Jennifer Earle Strickland At 2 years old, Jayme Smith -Glover began dancing at her mother’s Genesee St. studio. Born with the art in her blood, how could she avoid a ‘dance-destiny’, when her mom , Barbara Glover, is the owner and operator of Miss Barbara’s School of Dance, one of the longest running African American female-owned dance studios in the country (53 years!)? At 14, Jayme was a dance teacher; choreographing and staging routines. So, why wouldn’t her ultimate dream be to become a choreographer and studio owner?

Like many children, Jayme’s desire wasn’t to follow in her mother’s footsteps but to, instead, choose her own career path that included minoring in Dance at SUNY Brockport, and, attaining her Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at the University of Rochester. A 15 year career in Information Technology (IT) followed, but she still wasn’t satisfied and knew that she hadn’t reached her potential.

Dance, one of the most invigorating forms of exercise and self-discipline, is a creative art that has, for ages, ignited and inspired, not only performance artists, but virtually all genres of music. Though not a lucrative career for most dancers, choreographers, or studio owners, dancing allows one’s creative gifts to be exposed while sharing stories; living and moving biographies, in ways that only focused and intensely trained artists can present.

Glover-Smith, even after her IT years, wasn’t identifying her call to establish a dance studio, but she knew that becoming an entrepreneur was definitely on her horizon, and within her reach. She first, became a Zumba instructor, whose popular classes encouraged her to entertain the idea of opening her own fitness studio. However, after considering the many years of dance training, and serving as an instructor at Miss Barbara’s, the studio owner and operator ‘gene’ finally surfaced, and Miss Jayme established Studio J, offering classes in ballet, gymnastics, hip-hop, and tap.

According to Glover-Smith, Studio J offers opportunities and programming for the whole family, including their “Father-Daughter Dance” and “Holiday Dinner Showcase.” She wants her students’ dance journey to “offer unique opportunities that they otherwise may not experience.” Students perform, annually, for the residents and staff of the rehabilitation and medical care center, HighPointe on Michigan, and have displayed their talents at the Juneteenth Festival and Darien Lake. Studio J’s dancers have been selected to perform in the American Academy of Ballet’s “Nutcracker”, and at OnStage Disney, in Orlando Florida, both in 2017.

Keeping in mind one of her and Studio J’s goals in their quest to enhance the lives and inspire the dreams of its students, she advises that, “Performance opportunities are not just for the ‘best’, or ‘most advanced’ students. We expose them, at an early age, as part of their development.” The studio accepts children at 18 months, and progresses them through the various genres of dance as they get older.

Currently their roster includes Ms. Jayme and students. all ages, through the teen years.

This year, they will perform, in New York City, aboard the Intrepid Air and Space Museum, and will “Rock the Boat,” in 2019, on a Carnival Cruise. To top off this whirlwind of a decade for this former IT expert, her team is already scheduled to be back at Disney in 2020!!!

A strong, supportive family has played a consistent role in Glover-Smith’s journey. Her grandmother, septuagenarian Margaret Martin, whom she’s shared with probably thousands of dance students, drove her and younger sister, Janine, to dance classes, while mom, Miss Barbara, poured her artistic gifts into her talented girls.

Miss Jayme is married to the director of the Buffalo Employment Training Center (BETC), and former Masten District Councilman, Demone Smith, of whom she acknowledges that Studio J would not be possible, without his love and support in his “behind-the-scenes role” in the business. They have two children who’ve both experienced the world of dance, however, she encourages them to “do more than dance; to be well-rounded, through participation in other activities such as scouting.” Their son, now 9, has already advised that he’s “retired” from the craft, while their daughter, at 8, continues to hone her skills in ballet and tap.

Miss Jayme, whose studio has grown from 23 to 100+ since its first show, in December 2013, recognizes the significant role of her dedicated staff that includes, four additional instructors, three of which began their teaching experience at Studio J. “It has been so fulfilling to see the growth of our instructors. They love sharing their talents with our youth,” she proclaims, with humble pride.

The History of the Juneteenth Festival in Buffalo The clock is winding down and we’re rapidly approaching the 43rd consecutive Juneteenth Festival of Buffalo! Our city is nationally recognized as one of the top three Juneteenth festivals in the United States. Beginning with the raising of the African Liberation flag in downtown’s Niagara Square, Fri., June 8; to Sankofa Days, June 9 – 15; to the festival in Martin Luther King Park, June 16 -17; to the Maafa Memorial in historic Broderick Park ( on June 21,) Buffalo will be bustling with all that is Juneteenth and its celebrations of Black history, arts, and culture.

Buffalo’s Juneteenth History According to Juneteenth of Buffalo president, Marcus Brown, the original vision was inspired by members of the BUILD organization, who were unsettled and disparaged with America’s version of freedom, celebrated across the United States on July 4, in recognition of the liberty granted to the original colonies, by the British, as a result of their defeat in the Revolutionary War (17751783). Mindful of the fact that the ‘freedom’ afforded the colonists did not include those of African descent who remained enslaved by Europeans in this new, ‘free’ nation, the BUILD team committed to research until they discovered an event in American history that celebrated the freedom of Black people. The events in Galveston, TX in June 1865 surfaced; the BUILD team got busy, educating the community about that period; and the rest is history. This team, the founders of Juneteenth of Buffalo, included among others, Judson Price, Doug Ruffin, Sr., Claudia Sims, and Mary Robinson. They organized and implemented the first Buffalo Juneteenth celebration in June 1976, on Jefferson Ave. Black Buffalo celebrated with their families in an atmosphere of festivities, food, fun, live music, and street dancing; all aimed toward improving our cultural awareness.

After outgrowing the Jefferson Ave. festival corridor, the event was moved to Fillmore Ave. and Martin Luther King Park, and covers approximately 50 acres (2,178,000 sq. feet!) with activities and entertainment for all ages; cultural consciousness events; a health fair; book giveaway; and a kick-off parade that is unmatched by any other parade of its kind.

The Future of Juneteenth of Buffalo Brown, who has been a volunteer to the Festival since 1976, and has served as president of the Board of Directors for about 24 years, believes that the Buffalo festival’s growth, coupled with its longevity, is attributed to the commitment of the community’s support and volunteer force. They supply the tremendous amount of human power and energy that drives and electrifies the success of the, now, nearly 2-week event. His vision for the future of Juneteenth of Buffalo is to pass the torch; encouraging Board members and committee volunteers to follow the principle of ‘each one reaching and teaching one’ to move into those positions that make the festival happen, bigger and better, each year. He also looks forward to the festival reaching its full potential; expanding its outreach to provide community awareness programs that address health and fitness, finances, and history, especially that which reminds us of who we really are and the rich heritage that flows through our blood.

Juneteenth 365 is the ultimate goal of the organization. Led by its committed and diligent Board of Directors, Committee Chairs, Volunteers, and supported by its numerous sponsors, the festival seeks to concentrate on the continual education, enhancement, and enlightenment of the community. The history of the AfricanAmerican is infinite and often ‘under-taught’ in our educational and religious institutions, however, Juneteenth Festival of Buffalo, Inc.’s hope is that, eventually, the organization won’t be viewed with only the “Festival” as its focus, but anticipate continuous, daily and weekly events sponsored by the organization, making it a year-round resource. The board is encouraging and seeking young people who are willing to carry the eternal torch of Juneteenth into the next quarter of the 21 century and beyond.

I would say to all Moms impacted by the trauma of senseless gun violence, especially those whom I have personally interacted with over the years while serving with P.E.A.C.E. Organization founder Teresa Evans—that there will be no more suffering in silence!

Last Sunday I made a sojourn to my own mom’s gravesite. I poured libation, then walked a few yards over to her murdered son, Bernard’s grave. With him, by tradition I poured and drank libation.

Too many of our misguided desensitized villagers are simply waiting on God to “fix it.” But as the saying goes “God helps those who help themselves.” And so I will ask for spiritual guidance, wisdom, strength in purpose, body and heart, to be worthy of laying Brother Charles BURGIN a strong foundation. To build a movement that recalibrates Black minds that have been programmed into the myth of Black inferiority and self-hatred.

Truth be told, White supremacists began the mental brainwashing hundreds of years before the present generation was born!

Consider information from a recent study of our Buffalo Public School students: 10% of high school students say that they have missed school because they feel unsafe going to or from school. Many are carrying weapons outside of school. Many have contemplated suicide. More than a third said they have seen someone in the neighborhood shot, stabbed or beaten. There is so much more to tell as I have yet to elaborate on schools-to-prison pipeline.

Dear Editor, There has been much discussion recently regarding changes at SUNY Erie Community College. As the Chief Diversity Officer at the college, I think it’s important for the community to know about some new initiatives I am leading on behalf of President Dan Hocoy and his administration to create a more welcoming environment for all students.

First, we started a Critical Conversations series this Spring to create a forum for faculty, staff and students to have an open conversation about issues of racial equity on our campuses. Additionally, we are developing student affinity groups to facilitate a greater sense of community and support, as well as ensuring those of different faiths have opportunities to pray at each of our campuses.

We also expect to add Town Hall community conversations to our agenda next year, allowing the College to host a forum in different communities within the region to learn about the specific issues and priorities relevant for these communities.

Although we already have a Diversity Steering Committee that includes community members, a broader conversation within the communities of WNY would engender a much deeper mutual understanding. Additionally, we will be adding a Coffee with the Prez dialogue series beginning this Fall with President Hocoy to hear directly from students about their experiences, and any ideas or concerns they may have.

Finally, President Hocoy has charged the Provost and I to engage in a comprehensive college-wide study to examine various indices of student success by demographic factors, like race and gender to identify potential systemic issues that need to be addressed. Our goal is to ensure we provide all students with the opportunity to be successful in their programs, and fully prepare them for the rigors of their chosen career field.

I am excited about the work we are doing, and more importantly, how that work will impact our current and future students. Working together with the community will help us ensure we remain a viable educational option in the region.

Ed Parson Softball Kicks Off Sunday, May 20 Historic League To Honor the late James Hartley for season opener

Opening day for the Ed Parson Memorial Softball League is Sunday, May 20 at the field named in honor of the sports legend.

Games for the 12-week season will start at 11 a.m. each Sunday on Fillmore Avenue (between Kensington and E.Delavan), just south of the Kensington Expressway. Come on out for food, laughs and down-home family fun.

The public is invited to the front diamond at 12:30 PM at the season opener to pay tribute to Commissioner James Hartley who passed away last November. His affiliation with the league spans over decades--in 1962 Hartley’s uncle took him to his first game as a youngster which made a lasting impression. He went on to later coach some of its championship teams and managed the league for more than 20 years.

“Mr. Hartley also revived the league when it disbanded for a couple of years,” noted Demetrius Richards, newly appointed commissioner who will now lead the 12-week season. “We lost our fierce leader who will be dearly missed, especially by me.

He trained me to someday take over, I have some HUGE shoes to fill. I’m assured he will watch over and guide us to continue in the right direction. He was a mentor and friend.”

Sonya Fields will resume her role as deputy commissioner. “I knew James Hartley for more than 30 years,” remembers Sonya.

“I attended nearly every game when he served as a coach on the league. He was my protector, always looking out for me. You could count on his honest opinion, good or bad, right or wrong.

He mentored me as deputy commissioner to always stand my ground, he’ll be deeply missed.”

The league also gives a warm welcome to newly appointed

deputy commissioner A.C. Brown.

Plans are underway to the name two diamonds at the field in honor of Commissioner Hartley in the very near future. Stay tuned for more details on an official naming ceremony.

The season will culminate with two weeks of playoff games and the popular annual major league championship throwdown. Many thanks to Daren ‘Doc’ Thomas for his ongoing support with the promotional photo.

Founded in 1959, Ed Parson, Sr. launched the Sunday Morning Memorial Softball James Hartley League with a bold vision to design a local African American baseball and basketball alliance. With the financial backing of the late Marshall Myles, a prominent East Side socialite and businessman, they recruited the city’s most versatile all-high players forming some of the most powerful squads in the region.

NBA News This week in NBA action, the Eastern Conference playoffs became very comical, as Lebron James and the Cavs swept the Raptors again on the same day they swept the baby dinosaurs last year. For that reason, I have coined May 7th as National Sweeps Day which will be known for spring cleaning and getting rid of wanna be, suppose to be good but sorry highly ranked teams. To make things worse the NBA awarded the coach of the Raptors with the title, Coach of the Year but Dwayne Casey was fired the next day.

Thank you Lebron James, for adding another knot to your great career. But let's not act as if we didn't witness the Boston Celtics finish off the 76ers in 5 games. We also got a shock the system moment as the youthful Celtics have the Cavs a through behind whooping 108-83 as they held Lebron James to 15 points.

Can the Celtics end Lebron's streak of 7 straight finals appearances?

The Rockets finished off the Jazz in 5 games as the Warriors did the same to the Pelicans. This marks the first time, Chris Paul who led all

scorers with 41 points will be the Western Conference finals as they face the Golden State Warriors. In Game One of the Western Conference finals, James Harden scored 41 points but was upended by Kevin Durant's 37 points and the Rockets took a 119-106 loss at home. Which team will get to the NBA Finals?

Local News The Buffalo Bisons have started off the first 28 games with a record of 12-16. Tim Lopes is leading the team in battling average at .337.

Danny Jansen leads the team in RBI's with 16. Their best pitching has come has come from Chris Rowley with a 3-1 record and ERA of 1.93.

The Bisons will need to step it up if they want to make the playoffs for the first time since 2005.

In other news, we witnessed on Monday that the Supreme Court with a 6-3 ruling discontinued the federal law that had required states to ban gambling on the outcome of sporting events. This move will allow more states to gamble and cash in on the

he 2018 National Golden Gloves tournament will take place in Omaha, Nebraska from May 14th to May 19th. The Golden Gloves is the most storied amateur boxing tournament in the history of the sport. Names like, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Roy Jones, Jr., and other famous professional fighters have fought in this tournament. The Golden Gloves tournament was establish in 1927 by the New York Daily News.

In 2018, the tradition continues with a new crop of competitors competing for National Golden Gloves titles. The Carubba Collision Buffalo Golden Gloves franchise will represent New York State (except for Metro New York City) in Omaha, Robert Nebraska. Amateur boxers from all around New York State competed in the 2018 LEWIS Buffalo Golden Gloves tournament, at Buffalo RiverWorks, to earn their spot on the national team. The competition was fierce and the battles in the ring entertained a legion of boxing fans. The Buffalo Golden Gloves national team consist of 10 weight divisions and representatives.

Malik and Malika Pageant 2018 Calling all High School Students!

Juneteenth of Buffalo Festival Inc. will select a young man and a young lady to be King and Queen. Essays must be turned in June 1st to Juneteenth Office by mail to 1517 Genesee St, Buffalo, NY 14211.

Malik and Malika 2018 will be crowned at the Landmark, located at 318 Pearl Street at 6pm on June 14th.

The Malik and Malika will also participate and grace the Juneteenth 2018 parade.
