Community Voices Support for Soccer Team Protest

Supporters Call Actions “Bold, Courageous, And Righteous”

M

embers of the progressive Rochester Community have voiced support for the young men on the School #58 Soccer team who recently refused to stand during the playing of the national anthem before its match at Aquinas Institute.

For the No. 1 team in the Democrat and Chronicle’s small-school poll, two-time defending Section V Class C1 champion, it was all or nothing. The players decided that they would all do it or none of them would do it according to a source.

They all took to one knee.

The following press statement was released by the Nation of Islam, Rochester, NY Study Group, the United Christian Leadership Ministry (UCLM), Education Action & Change Work Group of Facing Race=Embracing Equity and The People’s Agenda: “We called for this gathering in order to publicly express our collective pride, appreciation, and support for the young men on the school #58 soccer team, who took a bold, courageous, and righteous stand on behalf of themselves, their families, and the broader Black Community, as well as oppressed communities in general. Their actions are clearly motivated by love for oppressed people, and has absolutely nothing to do with disrespect, or dishonor of veterans, or anyone else for that matter.

“We believe that they are displaying several habits of mind, and shills that we hope our school system will help instill in all of our students. Those include demonstrating deep, critical, and analytical thought, understanding, and concern regarding long-standing serious, historic, sociopolitical issues --- and then going further by stepping up, as young people, and demonstrating responsible behavior, and outstanding leadership, on behalf of thousands of youth who have been abused, and in many cases, are still being abused, and sometimes worse. They took a stand regarding justice, and equality for all, and for that, we admire, and honor them.

“Again, we want these fine young men, and their families, the Rochester City School District, and the broader community to know that we stand ready, willing, and able to support the soccer players at #58 school, as well as other schools, in any ways necessary, and possible.

“We are somewhat concerned by what seems to be a calculated effort on the part of the Rochester City School District to restrict, and redirect students First Amendment Rights regarding the importance of open, and honest dialogue concerning this critical matter. Thus, we also stand ready, willing and able to offer support to anyone in the Rochester City School District, or beyond (children, and/or adults) who feel that their First Amendment rights are being violated by anyone regarding this, and/or any other similar, or related situation.”

Update on Willie Monroe Jr. Winning the WBO Middleweight Title

By Randy Greg On September 17th Rochester’s own Willie Monroe Jr. won the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Middleweight title by out pointing Gabriel Rosado in a 12 Round decision. We should all be proud of what Willie “El Mongoose” Monroe Jr. has accomplished as a boxer for Western New York.

It appeared to be easy light weight work for Willie who won on every judge score card.

The bad part is that it was a bit slow and some are classifying this fight as boring. Neither fighter was ever in trouble or concerned with being knocked out nor were many punches being or landed. Willie is a fast counter puncher and Rosado didn’t have an answer.

The question becomes did Willie do enough to earn him a big pay day against a Saturday’s night main event, Canelo Alvarez?

Canelo easily defeated Liam Smith for another WBO belt and many said this was an audition for fighting Alvarez December 10th. Canelo is a steep hill for Willie to climb but it could be the best payday he has seen thus far. For that reason I hope he gets the fight. I’m just not sure if he could win with Canelo’s crafty skills and speed but I guess we will all find out soon.

-“Restoring Justice Buffalo Public Schools”The following report, “Restoring Justice Buffalo Public Schools” released by Citizen Action of New York, The Alliance for Quality Education, the Public Policy and Education Fund and the Advancement Project, cites these findings: •The 2013-2014 school year was the first year under the new Code of Conduct for Buffalo Public Schools, and there were some promising results.

•But although both short term and long term suspensions are down, the vast majority of suspensions continue to be given out for vague, non-violent behaviors that should be handled in school, such as defiance of authority, disrespectful behavior, disruptions, and minor physical altercations.

•Although most schools saw decreases in the use of short and long term suspensions, some schools saw huge, problematic increases, some by almost double compared to the year before.

•Racial disparities continue to be a problem, especially for Black and Latino students.

•Black and Latino students are about 70% of the total student population, but make up almost 80% of all short term suspensions and 80% of all long term suspensions.

•Black and Latino students are more likely to receive a short term and long term suspension than their White peers •Black students are 6.5 times more likely than their White peers to receive short term suspension and long term suspension •Latino students are 3.7 times more likely than their white peers to receive short term suspensions and 3.6 times more likely to receive long term suspension.

Buffalo Native Video, Game Developer Ethan Redd Invited to Speak at This Year’s IndieCade!

Buffalo, NY native and rising video game developer, Ethan Redd, will be speaking at this year’s IndieCade Festival in Los Angeles, California. IndieCade is the nation’s biggest independent game event and is in its 9th consecutive year.

Held from October 13 to October 16, the festival will offer the opportunity for members of the industry and public to experience over 200 recent innovative independent video games from all over the world . There will be games, talks, and events held with creators and veterans

within the industry.

As one of few African American video game developers, Redd will be featured as a speaker for one of the festival’s “GameU” sessions on Saturday, October 15 speaking on the basics of low polygon art, an art style that Redd has become widely known for using.

2016 has been a big year for the 22 year old. In addition to releasing his latest independent project, “NE_0,” Redd was also a featured developer at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June, created artwork for the dome film at this year’s Panorama music festival in New York City, and has made contributions to several ongoing projects. Death Toll in Haiti Climbs Past 1,000 More Than 1.5M Haitians Affected By Hurricane Matthew, Deadly Cholera on the Rise

H

aiti is facing a surge in cholera cases in the wake of Hurricane Matthew, doctors warned as the death toll on the devastated island climbed past 1,000. The powerful hurricane, the fiercest Caribbean storm in nearly a decade, slammed into Haiti last Tuesday.

U.S. Marines delivered badly-needed food aid Sunday, after Haiti’s government said more than 1.5 million people had been affected by the storm and 350,000 of those were in need of immediate assistance.

While the capital and biggest city, Port-au-Prince, was largely spared, the south suffered devastation. Ninety percent of crops have been destroyed in worst-hit areas of the country, according to U.N. World Food Program officer for Haiti, Lorene Didier.

Throughout Haiti’s southwestern peninsula, people were digging themselves out from the wreckage of the storm, which also brought flooding and at least 21 deaths to the United States.

Haiti’s National Civil Protection agency in Port-au-Prince said Sunday that its official death toll for the country was 336, which included 191 deaths in Grand-Anse. However, a tally of numbers from local officials, compiled by Reuters, put the number at more 1,000. NBC News could not independently confirm that figure.

At the Port-a-Piment hospital, survivors carried in a string of weak and severely sick patients with symptoms of cholera.

Missole Antoine, the hospital’s medical director, said the number of patients admitted with cholera symptoms had doubled to 60 during Sunday and that four people had died of the waterborne illness.

“That number is going to rise,” she told Reuters as she rushed between patients laid out on the hospital floor.

The hospital lacks an ambulance, or even a car, and Antoine said many new patients were coming from miles away, carried by family members.

Inside the hospital, grim-faced parents cradled young children whose eyes had sunk back and were unable to prop up their own heads.

“I believe in the doctors, and also in God,” said 37-year-old Roosevelt Dume, holding the head of his son, Roodly, as he tried to remain upbeat.

In the nearby village of Labei, locals told Reuters the river had washed down cadavers from villages upstream. With nobody coming to move the corpses, residents used planks of driftwood to push them down the river and into the sea.

Ken Thompson, Brooklyn, NY’s 1st Black District Attorney, Dies Brooklyn, N.Y., District Attorney Ken Thompson died Sunday after a battle with cancer, his family announced, NBC New York reports. He was 50 years old.

In a statement released Tuesday, Thompson had announced a leave of absence in order to fight his cancer, not specifying what type of cancer he had or any time frame for his treatments, the news station notes. A statement from his family said that he passed away Sunday at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, surrounded by loved ones.

“A lifelong New Yorker, Ken was known as an effective, aggressive civil rights leader—and a national voice for criminal-justice reform,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement, adding that he was “profoundly saddened” to learn of Thompson’s death.

Cuomo ordered all flags to fly at half-staff in memory of Thompson.

Thompson had been in office since January 2014 after upsetting Charles Hynes, who had been district attorney for more than 20 years, NBC New York notes. He was the first African American to be elected as Brooklyn’s district attorney.

Donald Trump Still Believes Central Park 5 Are Guilty Donald Trump continues to prove what a misguided and miserable president he would make after insisting that the Central Park Five were guilty, despite their being exonerated by DNA in New York City’s horrific 1989 Central Park jogger rape case.

“They admitted they were guilty,” Trump said to CNN in a statement.

“The police doing the original investigation say they were guilty. The fact that that case was settled with so much evidence against them is outrageous. And the woman, so badly injured, will never be the same,” he continued.

The 1989 crime - in which a 28-year-old White banker who had been jogging at night in Central Park was raped, bludgeoned with a rock and was found hours later, tied up, stripped and suffering from hypothermia and brain damage -- shook the city and exacerbated racial tensions.

Trump involved himself in the controversy soon after it took place when he took out full-page ads in major newspapers calling, among other things, for the death penalty to be reinstated in New York.

There were no witnesses to

the attack. The victim had no memory of it, and DNA evidence was not presented at the trial.

Four young Black men and one Latino (“The Central Park 5 ), all teens at the time of their arrests, who were coerced by detectives, were charged with and convicted of the brutal rape.

In 2002, another man, a convicted rapist and murderer, confessed to the assault, and his DNA did match semen that was found on the victim.

No DNA evidence has been

found to tie any of the Central Park 5 to the crime.

The Central Park 5 were exonerated, all cleared of the rape, and in 2014, New York paid them a $41 million settlement.

Ken Burns, who co-directed a 2012 documentary on the case, tweeted last Friday: "Apparently Mr. Trump is unfamiliar with the concept of wrongful conviction."

“Holistic Me”: Breathing Love Into Our Children

The Holistic Life Foundation, a Baltimore, Maryland non-profit that offers human and environmental health programs devised an after school program called Holistic Me. It was piloted in 2002 at Windsor Hills Elementary School, then hosted at the Druid Hill YMCA for 7 years. Now the Holistic Life Foundation’s after school program is facilitated at Robert W. Coleman Elementary School where they have had great success and no suspensions in the past year since implanting the program two years ago. The program was founded by two brothers Ali and Atman Smith and Andes Gonzalez and their goal was to provide kids from a low-income and high-crime-rate neighborhood with the tools to cope with stress and anger. The program currently serves 120 male and female students, from grades Pre-K through 5th. Students in Holistic Me benefit and grow in many ways from their participation. The children learn a combination of yoga, mindfulness practices, meditation, centering and breath work that empower them with skills for peaceful conflict resolution, improved focus and concentration, greater control and awareness of thoughts and emotions, improved self-regulation, anger management as well as stress reduction and relaxation.

Over the past 15 years, students of the program have graduated and transitioned into mentor roles—former students now make up 50 percent of its workforce.

Nat Turner’s Alleged Remains Returned to His Family After Almost 200 Years

T

hanks to Nate Parker’s controversial film, “The Birth of a Nation,” the story of Nat Turner has once again pricked the popular imagination of America.

For those who don’t know, Turner led one of the bloodiest slave rebellions in American history in the year 1831. When it was all said and done more than 55 White men, women and children lay dead.

Retribution against the Black community was swift and fierce. More than 200 African Americans in Virginia lost their lives as payback, but Turner was able to initially escape. After two months on the lam he was captured, tried, executed by hanging on Nov. 11, 1831 in the town of Jerusalem, now Courtland, Va. What happened to his remains was a mystery. Until now.

A recent report by National Geographic confirms that Turner’s descendants finally recently received Turner’s skull this weekend from a former mayor of Gary, Ind.— 83-year-old Richard Gordon Hatcher, who served as the first African-American mayor of Gary from 1968 to 1987.

Shannon Batton Aguirre and Shelly Lucas Wood, both great-great-great-great granddaughters of Turner, flew in from Washington D.C. to receive the remains.

National Geographic outlined the history of Turner’s vestiges and says that Hatcher received his skull from Franklin and Cora Breckinridge, civil rights activists in Elkhart, Ind., who donated the skull to Hatcher in 2002.

The Breckenridges received it from Bob Franklin, also of Elkhart, Ind., who says the skull was passed down in his family for three generations.

Franklin’s grandfather, Dr. Albert Gallatin Franklin, was a physician in Richmond, Va., who in around 1900 received the skull from a female patient who inherited it from her father—one of the doctors who handled Turner’s body after he was executed, according to National Geographic.

Franklin’s father apparently tried to actually donate it to the Smithsonian, but the museum said it did not accept human remains, and so he gave it to the Breckenridges, who eventually donated it to Mayor Hatcher who was building a Civil Rights Hall of Fame

project in the state.

“The legacy of Nat Turner has had enduring impact not simply upon our family, but upon American history,” Aguirre said. “Certainly, this fragile fragment holds enormous emotional value for me, for my family. But it is of immeasurable value because it is a poignant reminder of the price of freedom. In a very tangible way, it asserts the humanity of people who were systemically dehumanized. Its incredible existence demands acknowl-

edgement that, yes, this Black life mattered.”

Plans call for the skull to be temporarily housed at a secure location where forensic anthropologists, in cooperation with National Geographic Studios, will conduct a full study, including isotope analysis and DNA testing. The Turner family will provide genealogical information as well as DNA samples in hopes that the skull matches their genetic profile. If it is confirmed as Turner’s, it will be laid to rest alongside other descendants.

King has over 10 years of experience in the mental health and higher education professions. Most recently she served as the Director of Intercultural Affairs at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. She was responsible for designing, implementing, and assessing the programs, trainings, and services which directly supported students from historically underrepresented and underserved populations and promoted interculturalism across campus.

Prior to Washington College, King was the Assistant Dean of Intercultural Student Development at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington.

Buffalo All Star Extreme Celebrates Grand opening of City’s First Minority Owned Gymnasium & Dance Studio

B

uffalo All Star Extreme (B.A.S.E) will celebrate the grand opening of Buffalo ‘s first Minority owned Gymnasium and Dance studio on October 20 at 6 p.m. at 1245 Main Street.

The only All Star Cheer & Dance program in the city, Buffalo All Star Extreme’s new home is a state of the Art 1,000 sq. ft. facility which will feature a dance studio and a 2000+ sq. ft. gymnasium with spring floors.

Since its founding in 2013 B.A.S.E has been the training home to over 300 athletes in and around the surrounding areas of Buffalo and has won over 100 local, state and national championship titles and attended the Cheerleading Finals three times. In 2014, B.A.S.E was ranked first and second in the nation by the United States All Star Federation. In 2014, B.A.S.E successfully became the 1st Majorette dance team in Upstate New York.

With the success of its first season, the team was noticed by Lifetime television reality superstar “Diana Williams” from the hit show “Bring It. ” That led to a summer camp collaboration in Buffalo that brought in over 1,500 spectators and the casting crew of “Bring it.”

“The Magnificent 9”: Cast of Roberson Theatre’s ‘Jitney’ Nails it!

S

ome of the finest acting to grace the stage of the African American Center’s Paul Robeson theatre can be seen now thru October 23 in the theatre’s production of “Jitney” - one of the late August Wilson’s iconic slices of Black life .

Last Friday night, a week after the play opened, the house was full and not even a power outage failed to dampen the play’s momentum.

One of the beauties of “Jitney,” written by the two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Wilson, is that it gives us an intimate look at Black men in their everyday struggle to survive in this society; their joys, their pains and their interactions with one another.

The two-act play, which takes place inside the jitney office, highlights the complexities of the fatherson bond and the reality of “urban renewal” (also known back in the day as “Negro removal”), as the company faces closure in the face of the city’s plan to tear down the neighborhood.

Willie Judson, one of the city’s most talented and unsung thespians, has brought together an exceptionally fine cast of actors. Our hats are off to them FATHER-SON CONFLICT: Willie Judson (left) all! There is the cantankerous old busybody and gossip Turbo played by Fisher; Youngblood played

by Johnny Rowe, a young brother just trying to make it for his family, who often clashes with Turbo; Fielding, portrayed by Al Garrison, a functional alcoholic with the soul of a poet; Doub played

by Leon Copeland, an intense brother who always appears to keep his cool; Andy Finley IV plays the smart dressing street wise Shealy, who runs his number business out of the jitney office and who is constantly looking to break an old girlfriend’s curse; Youngblood’s girlfriend Rena, portrayed by the talented Christina Foster, holds her own as the only female the production; Charles A. Everhart plays Philmore; and veteran stage actor Roosevelt Tidwell III as Booster, Becker’s son. The intensely emotional exchange between Becker and his son (Judson and Tidwell) upon the son’s return from a 20-year jail sentence was a highlight in the production, bringing out the best in both these talented actors.

The ensemble is tight, their relationships with one another solidly believable. It is a play we can all relate to. The result – a performance you don’t want to miss! –A.B. (Although there is plenty of comic relief, Jitney is a serious portrayal of the Black experience.

The world premiere of the original musical “The Destiny of Rose,” with its awesome singing, dancing, original music and acting - is solid proof of that.

Written by Christopher B. Pearman and Phil Davis Sr., and directed by Pearman, ”Destiny” debuted October 2 on stage at the Buffalo Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts.

If you missed it, you’ll have the opportunity to catch it Saturday, Nov 12 at 7 p.m. at Zion Dominion Church of God. The story behind the making of “Destiny” is an interesting one in and of itself. Briefly, Pearman, noted author, motivational speaker and advocate for the homeless (www.dreamsoabig. com), is the father of celebrity actress Raven Simone. He gave himself less than a year to make it (the musical) all happen.

Pearman teamed up with Buffalo’s Davis, the talented young actor/director and founder of Alemaedae Theater, to help him bring his dream of producing the show (which he initially wrote three years ago,) to fruition. They were joined by another exceptional talent, musician Anthony Taylor (he and Pearman produced the musical score) and the result was magic.

The music is wide ranging and excellent; several of the songs easily “hit” material (Pearman and Lindsay Niccs co-writers).

My favorites included the high energy opening number “Best Friends” (sung by the exceptional actors/singers/dancers Courtney Turner and Shaenia Singletary as Rose and Destiny respectively); “I Am Rose,” sung by Courtney Turner; the soul stirring gospel “Make a Way” and “A Mothers Love,” performed by Sherri Singletary; and the Homeless ensemble with Tuhran Gethers singing “Someone.” Gethers also doubled as the musical’s impressive griot-like MC. The background singers - Kelly Whitman, Priscilla Carter and Rosemarie Feliciano - also turned in a fine performance, as did the show’s awesome dancers - Trinity Bryant, Taylor Moore, Kenya Petty, Davida Small, Aiyshaunna Hall, Charles Fuller, Kazmier Garrett and Danielle Love.

Tanika Holmes did an outstanding job with the choreography and Davida Tolbert as the devilish Mrs. Deveaux, was really quite awesome. Kudos as well to the rest of the fine cast which included veteran actor and co-writer Phil Davis, Deyonta Hopkins, and Shawn Green. Rounding out the cast are the extras, Paul Fanara, Clarence Hughes, Courtney Costanzo, Madison A. Brown, Josiah Cole, Anthonii King, Sharde Singletary, and Isiah Gethers. (All the dancers except for Tanika and Taylor are Performing Arts students. Sheania is an Arts student as well .

The story line – about two friends Destiny Storm and Rose Desire who ae going for the same dream and end up on a collision course to see if friendship really matters - is universal and appealing. There are a host of positive life-giving messages (i.e. the power of prayer and faith) throughout the production for young and old alike. There are particularly poignant messages in this story for the youth.

“Destiny of Rose” definately has the potential to go far.

J

amaal Carter is a 6'1 “do it all” point guard from Buffalo, NY. Some of his best qualities aside from his selflessness are his athleticism (registered 40 inch vertical leap), as well as his shooting. He averaged 22.5pts, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists in high school at City Honors. While at City Honors, he received an All Western New York 4th team selection, All Class B first team, as well as an All -State selection. Post City Honors, he continued his career at Redemption Christian Academy, a Prep School stationed in both Boston and Albany until he received an offer from Roberts Wesleyan, a Division 2 school in Rochester, NY. After two years at Roberts Wesleyan, he made the decision leave his commitment at there in 2015. He received COACH multiple D1 interests including Portland State, CAL Binghamton and Canisius; yet none panned out to a scholarship so Jamaal chose to attend Buffalo State College for the 2015- 2016 semester strictly as a student to work toward his degree and improve his GPA as well as his craft. During his semester at Buffalo State College he emailed schools nearly every day seeking an opportunity for over an 8 month span and as a result of his effort received D2 interests from Lincoln Memorial University, University of Tampa, and University of Mount Olive, but none panned out to a scholarship. Jamaal’s journey of commitment and passion for basketball never failed as he never gave up . He was recently given the opportunity to redshirt at Lindenwood University - Belleville an NAIA D1 college in Belleville, IL. Congratulations Jamaal!!

Resistance as a tool for liberation

T

Michigan Street Development, A Dream Deferred?

he recent controversy regarding San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick decision to make a statement during the national anthem has spurred some very important conversations. It was his intention to draw attention to the rash of African-Americans who are killed by law enforcement. In addition is also brought attention to the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner as well as the meaning of American symbols which bring pride to most but pain to many who have suffered from generations of racism. One critique of Kaepernick’s actions is what will it accomplish? The most important question is what will be gained for the people when prominent individuals confront the hypocrisy of the celebration of the symbols of freedom in this nation. I will attempt to add context to this by sharing my story.

By the grace of God I was blessed to have abnormal running ability. As a result I had the good fortune of being a member of The Ohio State University’s track team. While at OSU I excelled by breaking school records, becoming Big Ten Champion, All-American and participant in the 1984 Olympic trials. My achievements gave me notoriety on a campus in love with athletics.

African-American students who excelled on the athletic fields were given an PASTOR GEORGE “exceptional negro” status, not because of scholarship but because of athletic NICHOLAS prowess. In 1985 I was going into my senior year with must anticipation and adulation from the OSU community. Simultaneously, our brothers and sisters in the nation of South African were fighting for their freedom against the oppressive apartheid regime. While most of the world renounced the racist South African government, the Reagan administration along with American corporate interests stood with oppression and not justice for all. Comrades in the struggle joined Mandela and Tutu calling for America to divest from businesses doing profiting from apartheid regime. As a result many students began to demand their institutes of higher learning divest all their money from businesses who partnered with South Africa. When confronted by student activists about the $7 million Ohio State invested in South African, the president and trustees replied that they would invest wherever that got the best profit regardless of human rights. When I learned about this I became outraged by the position of the university that I proudly represented on the track took towards people who looked like me. I asked myself how can I remain silent in the midst of such callous indifference to the suffering of my people?

That weekend we had a meet scheduled at home against Penn State and I knew I had to do something. So with brashness and recklessness of a 21 year old I made up my mind, it was my time to be heard. So as they played the national anthem before the meet, I walked to the middle of the track and kneeled with my arms behind my back like those who were imprisoned by the apartheid system. I kneeled with my back to the flag, just as America had turned their back to those who suffering in South Africa. Protest alone is ineffective without information. So as I kneeled my friends passed out fliers explaining the protest and urging support for divestment. Refusal to stand was not enough for me; it had to be connected with resistance in the form of refusal to continue to represent those who hate my people. After the national anthem my coach asked me if I intended to run, as a sign of resistance I said no. Instead of taking my place at the starting line, I silently sat off the field of battle; I had a greater purpose that day. My refusal to run put into jeopardy my track career. I was a senior and did not have many more races to run. I was the star of the team and my refusal to run would hurt others. I could even face sanctions and the loss of my scholarship; I had a greater purpose.

So what good did this do? As a result a student movement was formed in support of divestment.

As a result the Black law students came together to develop a response to the university on why OSU should divest. As a result a coalition was built that included the local union that represented university employees who stood in solidarity with us. As a result African-American Ohio state legislatures began to demand that OSU divest out of South Africa. As a result students became aware of the atrocities of apartheid and how American businesses profited off of the suffering of African people. As a result graduate economics and business students showed how OSU could divest and not lose money. As a result after many protest, a near brawl at a trustee meeting, threats to my safety and a lengthy suspension victory was won. That spring Ohio State University divested every dollar from businesses that did business in South Africa.

I tell this story to show that resistance works. I received a great education at Ohio State during this process, the power of resistance. I applaud Colin Kaepernick and others who have decided to take a stand by taking a knee. However, now is the time to develop a demand and build a coalition. Protest brings attention, but the hard work is in securing allies and building a coalition for change. In order to win we must be able to resist. The truth is nobody cares if these athletes don’t stand for the national anthem, they can live with that. Resistance is found in the question that my coached asked me that day, “Are you going to run?” Resistance happens not only when we refuse to salute the flag, but when we refuse to keep playing the game. Systemic racism continues and will continue whether we stand or sit for the national anthem as long as money is being made.

However things will change when the African-American athlete resists and refuse to play. What would Sunday look like if the great African-American football gladiators resisted by taking a knee for all four quarters until our people are safe from state sponsored executions? The protests have been done, now it is time for us to resist until the justice, safety and liberation is won for all of our people.

n my view, the recent News editorial (“Beacon of Light”) endorsing the plan of the Trettle, Carmina and Davis group for the development of 163 Broadway at the corner of Michigan, is premature and obscures the need for more serious review, evaluation and assessment by the community, particularly stakeholders and residents most affected. As a matter of disclosure, readers should know I helped to develop and present the Sankofa Development Plan sponsored

by Langston Hughes Institute (LHI) for the same site. I also participated with LHI board members in discussions with Roger Trettle and Steve Carmina for several months regarding partnering with LHI on the Sankofa Development Project it was sponsoring for the site; as well as with the Michigan Street Corridor Commission stakeholders and the Empire State Economic Development Agency.

There’s been no public presentation, or discussion of the mixed use plan now being advanced

by Carmina; no public meeting consistent with BURA review, nor review by the MSAAHC Commission which is authorized by State legislation to review and evaluate new development plans and policies within the Michigan Street Corridor. The extent of available project information is limited to the News article about the new owners and their plan for historic preservation of the property appearing in the News a few days before the editorial.

Although the editorial heralds the proposed development as a beacon of light for Eastside development, I doubt it. From my perspective, that metaphor only works when the beacon is understood as a warning light alerting us to treacherous waters and rocky shores of economic disparity and injustice that Langston Hughes Institute encountered when forwarding its plan for development of the site.

This new plan arrives in the aftermath of a diligent, but failed effort, by Langston Hughes Institute and others to gain support of a developer to redevelop the site as a mixed use facility with an arts and cultural anchor. From my experience, a poetic reference from Langston Hughes, “What Happens to a Dream Deferred,” is a good starting point to bring true light to reconcile the negativity, dysfunction, prejudice and dishonesty that doomed our effort to overcome oppressive Rendering of the proposed renovathinking and practices of black community and downtown tions for the Langston Hughes Institute’s Broadway location. development.

The article reported on architect Carmina’s conceptual plan but offers no substantive insight to answers regarding the value, benefits and purpose of the planned use; its impact and effects on the neighborhood, and whether it fits in a historic cultural heritage zone; or represents the standard of the Corridor Master Plan required by State legislation and approved by the Common Council in 2012. That plan establishes the highest and best use for the site as a cultural tourism, visitors and educational destination to be a resource and adjunct to the development of the AA cultural heritage stakeholders When reporting that Langston Hughes Institute’s plan for the site “did not materialize,” that statement begs the questions why not? What happened? The circumstances, conditions, attitudes and dispositions that left LHI’s Sankofa plan dying on the vine are worth knowing. It certainly has caused board members and myself to evaluate and assess our role and actions.

Langston Hughes Institutes Sankofa Development Plan, prepared by Watts Engineering and Architects, provided a world class reuse design for a mixed use site with 15,000 sq. ft. of arts exhibit, performance and studio space. It conformed to the highest standards of development planning with required evaluation of property conditions and environmental assessments. It was significant work, good work at significant costs. All of which was shared with Trettle based on the Boards invitation to him to consider a joint venture. The result was an introduction to Carmina as his partner on any potential agreement. Steve Carmina suggested that perhaps, Langston Hughes Institute should consider taking 500 square feet in the rebuild, quite an insult, all things considered. But of course, Carmina was quite adamant in asserting that he knew all about the economic disadvantages and injustice experienced by the Black community.

Although diligent in discussions with every single entity with a role relevant to its development plan, LHI was unable engender any level of agreement that engaged stakeholders, officials, or developers in a decision sharing relationship that would enable shared income and growth. The downtown development culture rejected the Sankofa Plan as unprofitable. Interestingly, the same developers also rejected the Explore and More Children’s Museum development at Canal Side Simply put, Langston Hughes Institute’s plan ran out of time and resources and the Board was unable to successfully navigate the intransigence of noncooperation that exists among and between Michigan Street heritage stakeholders, the MSAAHC Commission, the Mayor, and the Assemblywoman, nor the underdevelopment of the Commission by its officers. The discord among the participants and the undermining of the Commission that existed prior to LHI joining the

RESOLUTION NO. 239 RESOLUTION DATED OCTOBER 6, 2016 RESOLUTION APPROVING THE EXTENSION OF ERIE COUNTY SEWER DISTRICT NO. 2 AND MAKING OTHER DETERMINATIONS IN CONNECTION THEREWITH

WHEREAS, pursuant to proceedings heretofore had and taken in accordance with the provisions of Article 5-A of the County Law, a report of the Erie County Sewer Agency approved by the Erie County Sewer District No. 2 Board of Managers on October 8, 2015, an extension of Sewer District No. 2 of the County of Erie, New York to include sanitary sewer service areas currently serviced as out of district customers has been proposed; and WHEREAS, a map and plan have been duly prepared by the County Engineers (Erie County Department of Environment and Planning) relating to such extension of the Erie County Sewer District No. 2, which map and plan have been filed with the County Legislature pursuant to Section 254 of the County Law; and WHEREAS, there will be no additional capital costs incurred by or on behalf of the Erie County Sewer District No. 2 with respect to the extension of the boundaries of such District, but future annual charges will be apportioned in accordance with applicable flat charges and charges based on units, assessed value and footage, specified in the District's benefit assessment formula and rates, as such formulas currently exist and as amended from time to time; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 258 of the County Law, the consent of the State Comptroller is not required prior to the extension of said Erie County Sewer District No. 2 because such extension is not to be financed by the issuance of bonds, notes, certificates or other evidences of indebtedness of the County; and WHEREAS, said County Legislature duly adopted Resolution No. 110-2016 on the 9th day of June, 2016, calling a meeting of the County Legislature for the purpose of holding a public hearing on the aforesaid extension of Erie County Sewer District No. 2 in accordance with the aforesaid map and plan, and WHEREAS, the Erie County Sewer District No. 2 Board of Managers and the County Legislature have given due consideration to the impact that the extension of Erie County Sewer District No. 2 may have on the environment and on the basis of such consideration, have found that no substantial adverse environmental impact will be caused thereby; and WHEREAS, the Erie County Sewer District No. 2 Board of Managers and the County Legislature have complied in every respect with all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations regarding environmental matters including compliance with the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act, comprising Article 8 of the Environmental Conservation Law and, in connection therewith; and WHEREAS, said public hearing was duly held at Erie County Hall, 92 Franklin Street, 4th Floor, Buffalo, New York, in said County, on the 6th day of July, 2016, at 1:30 o'clock P.M., Prevailing Time; and WHEREAS, notice of said public hearing was duly published in the manner provided by law and proof thereof was submitted to said County Legislature; and WHEREAS, said County Legislature has duly considered the evidence given at such public hearing; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED

BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE COUNTY OF ERIE, NEW YORK, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Upon the evidence given at the public hearing held on July 6, 2016, and after due consideration of the map and plan, and other recommendations and other data, if any, heretofore provided to the County Legislature, it is hereby found and determined that: (a)the proposed extension is satisfactory, sufficient, adequate and appropriate; (b)all the property and property owners within the proposed extension are benefited thereby;

(c)all the property and property owners benefited are included within the limits of the proposed extension; (d)it is in the public interest to extend said Erie County Sewer District No. 2.

Section 2. The extension of Erie County Sewer District No. 2 is hereby approved and said extension shall comprise an area described as follows: (a)Erie County Sewer District No. 2 Boundary Extension 2016— Portion A ALL THAT TRACT OR PARCEL OF LAND ,situated in the Town of Evans, County of Erie, and State of New York, being part of Lot No. 63, Township 8, Range 9, of the Holland Land Company's Survey, Bounded and Described as follows; Bounded south by a line parallel with the south line of said Lot No. 63, seven hundred eight and eight four hundredths feet (708.84') north therefrom three thousand sixty seven and sixty eight hundredths feet (3,067.68'); west by Lot 73, one thousand two hundred sixty six and fifty four hundredths feet (1,266.54'); north by a line parallel with the north line of said Lot 63 three thousand fifty two and five tenths feet (3052.5'); and east by a line parallel with the east line of said Lot 63, one thousand two hundred sixty one and ninety two hundredths feet (1261.92').

This resolution is subject to permissive referendum and the Clerk of the Legislature is hereby authorized and directed to publish in full, within ten days after the adoption hereof, a Notice containing a true copy of this resolution, the resolution number, the date of adoption and a statement that such resolution is subject to permissive referendum.

VETERANS DAY PARADE

On Saturday, November 5, Veteran advocates and civic groups, along with Veteran community partners and supporters, will march in the 2016 Veterans Day Parade in downtown Buffalo.

The lineup for the Veterans Day parade will be located near the intersection of Virginia Street and Delaware Avenue, with step off at 11am.

The parade route will follow down Delaware Avenue, ending in front of Buffalo City Hall.

Groups are encouraged to participate in the parade and can register by October 24th with an email toKasmer03@ aol.com, using “Veterans” as the subject line to the email message. WHEREAS, pursuant to proceedings heretofore had and taken in accordance with the provisions of Article 5-A of the County Law, a report of the Erie County Sewer Agency approved by the Erie County Sewer District No. 3 Board of Managers on December 9, 2015, an extension of Sewer District No. 3 of the County of Erie, New York to include sanitary sewer service areas currently serviced as out of district customers has been proposed; and WHEREAS, a map and plan have been duly prepared by the County Engineers (Erie County Department of Environment and Planning) relating to such extension of the Erie County Sewer District No. 3, which map and plan have been filed with the County Legislature pursuant to Section 254 of the County Law; and WHEREAS, there will be no additional capital costs incurred by or on behalf of the Erie County Sewer District No. 3 with respect to the extension of the boundaries of such District, but future annual charges will be apportioned in accordance with applicable flat charges, hook-up charges and charges based on units, assessed value and footage, specified in the District's Benefit and User Charge formulas, as such formulas currently exist and as amended from time to time; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 258 of the County Law, the consent of the State Comptroller is not required prior to the extension of said Erie County Sewer District No. 3 because such extension is not to be financed by the issuance of bonds, notes, certificates or other evidences of indebtedness of the County; and WHEREAS, said County Legislature duly adopted Resolution No. 111-2016 on the 9th day of June, 2016, calling a meeting of the County Legislature for the purpose of holding a public hearing on the aforesaid extension of Erie County Sewer District No. 3 in accordance with the aforesaid map and plan, and WHEREAS, the Erie County Sewer District No. 3 Board of Managers and the County Legislature have given due consideration to the impact that the extension of Erie County Sewer District No. 3 may have on the environment and on the basis of such consideration, have found that no substantial adverse environmental impact will be caused thereby; and WHEREAS, the Erie County Sewer District No. 3 Board of Managers and the County Legislature have complied in every respect with all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations regarding environmental matters including compliance with the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act, comprising Article 8 of the Environmental Conservation Law and, in connection therewith; and WHEREAS, said public hearing was duly held at Erie County Hall, 92 Franklin Street, 4th Floor, Buffalo, New York, in said County, on the 6th day of July, 2016, at 1:30 o'clock P.M., Prevailing Time; and WHEREAS, notice of said public hearing was duly published in the manner provided by law and proof thereof was submitted to said County Legislature; and WHEREAS, said County Legislature has duly considered the evidence given at such public hearing; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED

BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE COUNTY OF ERIE, NEW YORK, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Upon the evidence given at the public hearing held on July 6, 2016, and after due consideration of the map and plan, and other recommendations and other data, if any, heretofore provided to the County Legislature, it is hereby found and determined that: (a)the proposed extension is satisfactory, sufficient, adequate and appropriate; (b)all the property and property owners

within the proposed extension are benefited thereby; (c) all the property and property owners benefited are included within the limits of the proposed extension; (d) it is in the public interest to extend said Erie County Sewer District No. 3.

Section 2. The extension of Erie County Sewer District No. 3 is hereby approved and said extension shall comprise an area described as follows: (a)Erie County Sewer District No. 3 Boundary Extension 2016— Portion A ALL THAT TRACT OR PARCEL OF LAND situate in the Town of Hamburg, County of Erie and State of New York, Being part of Lot No.18, Township 9, Range 8, of the Holland Land Company's Survey and being Subdivision Lot No. 5 as shown on map filed in the Erie County Clerk's Office under Map Cover No. 3110 "Strawberry Fields Part 2". WHEREAS, pursuant to proceedings heretofore had and taken in accordance with the provisions of Article 5-A of the County Law, a report of the Erie County Sewer Agency approved by the Erie County Sewer District No. 1 Board of Managers on October 2, 2015, an extension of Sewer District No. 1 of the County of Erie, New York to include sanitary sewer service areas currently serviced as out of district customers has been proposed; and WHEREAS, a map and plan have been duly prepared by the County Engineers (Erie County Department of Environment and Planning) relating to such extension of the Erie County Sewer District No. 1, which map and plan have been filed with the County Legislature pursuant to Section 254 of the County Law; and WHEREAS, there will be no additional capital costs incurred by or on behalf of the Erie County Sewer District No. 1 with respect to the extension of the boundaries of such District, but future annual charges will be apportioned between real property in the District in the towns of Cheektowaga and West Seneca in accordance with their respective proportionate shares of equalized assessed value in the District and in accordance applicable flat charges and charges based on units, assessed value and footage, specified in the District's Benefit and User Charge formulas, as such formulas currently exist and as amended from time to time; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 258 of the County Law, the consent of the State Comptroller is not required prior to the extension of said Erie County Sewer District No. 1 because such extension is not to be financed by the issuance of bonds, notes, certificates or other evidences of indebtedness of the County; and WHEREAS, said County Legislature duly adopted Resolution No. 109-2016 on the 9th day of June, 2016, calling a meeting of the County Legislature for the purpose of holding a public hearing on the aforesaid extension of Erie County Sewer District No. 1 in accordance with the aforesaid map and plan, and WHEREAS, the Erie County Sewer District No. 1 Board of Managers and the County Legislature have given due consideration to the impact that the extension of Erie County Sewer District No. 1 may have on the environment and on the basis of such consideration, have found that no substantial adverse environmental impact will be caused thereby; and WHEREAS, the Erie County Sewer District No. 1 Board of Managers and the County Legislature have complied in every respect with all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations regarding environmental matters including compliance with the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act, comprising Article 8 of the Environmental Conservation Law and, in connection therewith; and WHEREAS, said public hearing was duly held at Erie County Hall, 92 Franklin Street, 4th Floor, Buffalo, New York, in said County, on the 6th day of July, 2016, at 1:30 o'clock P.M., Prevailing Time; and WHEREAS, notice of said public hearing was duly published in the manner provided by law and proof thereof was submitted to said County Legislature; and WHEREAS, said County Legislature has duly considered the evidence given at such public hearing; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED

A DREAM DEFERRED continued Commission has been noted by the News in several editorials over the past seven years. Bringing light to the whole story can be instructive for understanding how Black community dreams and aspirations for Eastside development are deferred until they die.

Premature editorial support to Eastside development plans offering limited information and superficial review can contribute to perpetuating an oppressive economic culture of disparity in which White developers and entrepreneurs are esteemed as lighting the way for the benefit of African Americans. In reality, much too often, the result is a small group of developers and wealthy investors gaining control of more land and opportunities, building their wealth and leaving the community with a results that are ineffective in changing economic disadvantages and disparities suffered by the Black community.

The News is not alone in its premature endorsement of a Carmina’s conceptual mixed use plan for the “Dellenbaugh Block”.

With limited information, without public discussion and required meetings, evaluation, or impact assessments the Empire State Economic Development Agency Regional Economic Development Council also endorsed the mixed use development proposed by the private investors. Receiving a request from the Trettle and Carmina investment group for funding for their Michigan and Broadway historic property development, the Regional Economic Development Council voted to recommend the project for funding from the Buffalo Billion Fund.

Perhaps, there is a light here too, one that signals insiders get a pass, while not for profit charitable organizations are turned left, then right, required to go through a twisted gauntlet of contradictions until they run out of gas and the dream is no longer insight.
