Reflections On Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order Calling For A Special Prosecutor: Scope Too Limited

By Reverend Lewis Stewart Reverend Lewis Stewart of Rochester says the scope of Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order, which he signed a few months ago, calling for a Special Prosecutor in cases where law enforcement officers are involved in the death of civilians, “too limited.” Reverend Stewart is President of the United Christian Leadership Ministry of Western New York .

ecently, Governor Cuomo, through an Executive Order, granted authority to the N.Y. State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate incidents of killings by the police of unarmed civilians.

The United Christian Leadership Ministry’s stance is that the scope of the Executive Order is too limited.

The Executive Order should also include independent investigations into allegations of incidents of police use of excessive force as well as racial profiling.

Presently, in Rochester City Courts two separate cases are being heard by two city Rev. Stewart court judges involving young Black males who were arrested on trumped up charges.

They were threatened, harassed and physically pushed around by the same police officer.

This officer has wasted taxpayers money.

This same police officer continues to racially profile, threaten and sometimes assault young Black men.

He is not called to account for his racist behavior unbefitting an officer of the law.

His abhorrent practices are persistent, consistent and pervasive.

He and others of his ilk have not been corrected by the police department .

The District Attorney has not indicted him or others because of the very nature of their common interest in collaborating with these officers to build their cases . Although these cases, proceedings from these police officers, are based on misrepresentation of the facts, lies and distortions.

The District Attorney’s Association of the State of New York criticized the Governor’s Executive Order using such statements as “gravely flawed” and that “…district attorneys have far more experience and resources in dealing with these cases than either the governor or the attorney general.”

If that is the case, then why is it that in the City of Rochester, no police officer has ever been indicted for the murders of unarmed civilians?

Why is it that most police officers in New York State are never indicted by the grand jury system?

Why has no police officer who racially profiles ever been fired for engaging in racial profiling?

Instead they are rewarded for official lawlessness by keeping their jobs, which sends a signal that their behavior is approved of. It is lawlessness but pressed and uniformed lawlessness; wearing a badge but lawless ; armed with a weapon but lawless.

The judicial system does not work for people of color for it is seriously flawed and based on the false assumption that all Black males are criminals .

There certainly is a “Crisis of Confidence in the Criminal Justice System.”

White criminals are treated in a more humane manner than alleged Black criminals.

District attorneys suggest shorter sentences for Whites than Blacks.

Judges tend to impose harsher sentences on Blacks and are more lenient with Whites.

So whoever said justice is blind in America was certainly not blind to the issue of race in America; people of color just do not count.

For in America justice is not blind but harsh and brutal for a person of color.

Mind you, we are not unaware of the violence and murders committed in the city, and those who murder should be arrested, tried and convicted, but everyone should be treated with fairness and justice.

United Christian Leadership Ministry of Western New York supports and applauds the Governor’s Executive Order but the scope is too limited.

It must include incidences of police brutality to be investigated by the State Attorney General’s Office.

We call upon our N.Y. State Delegation to transform the Governor’s Executive Order into legislation. If we are to rebuild trust and have confidence in the judicial system then this process must readily take place and we must observe with the open eyes the cancer incubating institutional racism and excise it from a supposedly free and democratic society.

here will be a protest and call to action rally, Friday, October 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the Solar City Manufacturing Plant, 1341 So. Park Avenue (near Bailey Ave.) to get answers to why the minority hiring goals were decreased from 25% to 15% without public notification or

input.

This rally for inclusion, fairness and jobs will take place despite Monday’s press conference called by Mayor Byron Brown, who shared data which said that minorities have done 16.2% of the work on the site from the start of construction in May 2014 through July of this year, “exceeding the workforce diversity targets” set for the $900 million solar panel factory.When complete, Solar City will be the biggest solar panel plant in the Western Hemisphere when it reaches full production during early 2017.

Charley H. Fisher, president of the BUILD of Buffalo organization and one of the organizers of Friday’s rally, expressed skepticism about the numbers released by the mayor. He said he is seeking “hard proof” of the numbers and value of the contracts. “The devil is in the details” he maintained “I want to see the number of Black businesses that participated and the dollar amounts.”

Legislator Betty Jean Grant, another sponsor of the protest, said that the release of the recent data would not effect their plans, and that the rally will go on as scheduled. She also said she would like to see more details and specifics, i.e., how many of the workers were African American or Hispanic.

African Presence in Ancient Mexico The Olmecs were an ancient civilization in the Americas.

Researchers such as Rashidi, Ivan Van Sertima and Alexander Von Wuthenau have discovered and shared evidence showing that the original inhabitants of Mexico were of African descent.

The Olmecs were no different from people found in the Mende regions of West Africa.

Best known for carving the colossal stone heads that date back to 1100 B.C., more evidence of their existence before European explorers has been found. The Olmecs built pyramid-like structures made of mud in Mexico.

They were also very artistic and created terracotta art that displayed common activities like pottery-making and wrestling. To add to their achievements, the Olmec people developed a calendar system around 3100 B.C.

Report: White Supremacy a Greater Threat to US Than Extremists of the Muslim Faith Statistics show that domestic extremists who are not of the Muslim faith are more of a threat to America.

Despite what Donald Trump and many other politicians have told you, the major threat to America isn’t Muslim extremism.

In fact, statistics show that the real danger lies with domestic extremists who aren’t of the Muslim faith.

The New York Times reported back in June that since Sept. 11, 2001, almost twice as many people have died at the hands of White supremacists and other non-Muslim extremists than by radical Muslims. Using data compiled by New America, a Washington Research center, a study found that 48 people have been killed by extremists who are not Muslim—including the mass killings in Charleston, S.C.—compared to the 26 by self-proclaimed jihadists. However, this does not factor in he recent tragic shooting or less publicized incidents like the Las Vegas couple who murdered two police officers and left a Swastika on one of the bodies.These stats reveal a vast difference between public perception and the number of actual cases in which Muslim extremists have claimed American lives. So why aren’t more people outraged about domestic terrorists? Because then we’d have to admit that White supremacy is still a problem.

“There’s an acceptance now of the idea that the threat from jihadi terrorism in the United States has been overblown,” Dr. John G. Horgan, who studies terrorism at the University of Massachusetts said. “And there’s a belief that the threat of rightwing, antigovernment violence has been underestimated.”

Doctors Without Borders Call U.S. Airstrike that Hit Hospital a “War Crime”

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said this week in a statement, “The U.S. government has admitted that it was their airstrike that hit our hospital in Kunduz and killed 22 patients and MSF staff (Oct. 3). Their description of the attack keeps changing – from collateral damage, to a tragic incident, to now attempting to pass responsibility to the Afghanistan government. The reality is the U.S. dropped those bombs. The U.S. hit a huge hospital full of wounded patients and MSF staff.”

Gen. John Campbell, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, said most recently that Afghan forces who were under attack by the Taliban requested the U.S. airstrikes that hit the hospital run

by Doctors Without Borders.

The organization has demanded an independent investigation into the deadly airstrike “under the clear presumption that a war crime has been committed,” calling the U.S. military’s announcement that it would formally investigate “wholly insufficient.”There are currently 9,800 U.S. troops serving as “trainers in Afghanistan who are not “directly” fighting the Taliban.

“Hands Up, Don’t Tase!”

The Zephyrhills, Fla., police chief announced Friday that he has fired an officer after observing body-cam footage of him Tasering a Black man whose hands were raised in surrender as he stood inside the door of his home, according to the Tampa Bay Times.Calling it the “right thing,” Tim Claussen was fired over the Sept. 9 incident involving 42-year-old Lester Brown. In the video, the officer can be heard ordering the man to step through the door while Claussen points a Taser at him, the report says.

After Brown, whose hands were still raised, questioned the officer about what was going on, Claussen became impatient and fired his weapon, hitting Brown in the abdomen.

“Come outside now,” the officer can be heard saying, “or you’re about to get tased. This is the last time....

“You just made it a lot worse on yourself, Mr. Brown.”

ichard Satterwhite doesn’t have any trouble remembering dates. Among those that will stay with him: Sept. 6, Oct. 24, and Dec. 14. These are the dates that Satterwhite associates with milestones in his experience with prostate cancer.

Eight years ago, on Sept. 6, Satterwhite received the news that he had prostate cancer.

Although the diagnosis was unexpected, Satterwhite did have one sign that something was amiss. It was a television infomercial for a prostate medication, which ticked off symptoms of an enlarged prostate — age and difficulty with urination — that made Satterwhite, then 44, think of his own recent urination problems, and sent him to make an appointment with his doctor.

Satterwhite’s examination with his doctor included collecting a small blood sample to check levels of prostatespecific antigen (PSA) in his

Cancer was found in his prostate.

“There’s an expression, ‘having the wind sucked out of your sails’, which was exactly how I felt upon receiving the news that cancer had been found in my body,” says Satterwhite. “I still remember walking out of the doctor’s office to tell my wife the news and seeing the look of helplessness that flashed across her face. I thought about talking to our kids and my mother.

I remembered my father, who passed away some 15 years before from ALS, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. I thought about how my life changed in an instant.

ter that day and I kept most of them to myself, in an attempt to be strong for my family.”

Two of those emotions were anger, and then determination to not let this ‘cancer thing’ beat him. After consulting with the experts at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), Satterwhite decided that in his case, and at his age, having his prostate removed, an operation called radical prostatectomy, would be the best option for him.

“As cliché as it may sound, if Sept. 6, 2007 was the ‘day my life changed forever,’ then Oct. 24, 2007 was the ‘first day of the rest of my life,’” Satterwhite says about the day of his operation. “In my opinion, I made the right decision for my cancer treatment based on all the information provided to me. I would advise any man who may find themselves in the same circumstances as me, to take control of your life, learn the facts, talk to your doctor, and don’t give up.”

Which brings up that last date: Dec. 14, 2007. That’s the day Satterwhite was told he was cancer free. “Here we are more than seven years later and I’m still cancer free,” he says, and proactive in the cancer community.

Satterwhite is a patient navigator for Roswell Park’s Urology Department, helping guide patients diagnosed with prostate cancer through the treatment process. He Continued Page 13

Drea D’Nur Concert Tears the Roof off The Tralf !

A

rriving at the Tralf for the Buffalo Vibe City Alive concert, I knew I was in for a special night. Local musical artist Drea D’Nur was set to perform, accompanied by phenomenal national and local musical artists. As I looked around I could feel the electricity in the air as people filled the room and took their seats. Quietly family, friends and supporters of all ages, from around the globe waited with anticipation.

Among them were her parents and grandparents-- all knowing they would be in for an exceptional evening with Drea. The recording artist earlier explained that the show would be historical in that it was the first time that the bands JFT and TRIIINITY, featuring Kenny Hawkins and Hayden Fogle all played together at the same time on the Tralf stage. “ I promote unity of the arts at my shows. My vision is about reminding us of our purpose in God and uplifting hurting people and inspiring us to see a worthy and necessary contribution to the Universe within ourselves,” declared Drea.

And what a moment it was! When Drea D’Nur walked onto the stage into the bright lights before us dressed in her regal finest, she took command and proceeded to belt out one song after the other; the sound was exclusively, exceptionally Drea.

There is no one who can sing soulful classics like this talented young artist. Drea has her own signature, it is Love=Light!

“She killed it!” said one fan in the audience as she listened, sang and shouted with the crowd to Drea’s renditions of “It’s a Man’s World” by James Brown, “Purple Rain” by Prince and “I’d Rather go Blind” by Etta James.

Well received, anointed and reflecting her joy and pain, Drea definitely took us higher. She unveiled many of her new songs to the audience. Transparent and vulnerable, she shared life lessons, giggled with joy about family and friends then produced a force of energy that literally tore the roof off the downtown entertainment center.

The excitement and artistic/musical mastery, combined with sheer genius shared by all the musicians, made it a memorable night.Blues guitarist phenomenon 15 year old Hayden Fogle didn’t miss a bluesy beat. All the musicians accompanying Drea provided rocket fuel for the evening. The JFT BAND with Jerry Livingston, Carl “Flute” Johnson, and Toney Rhodes played on such a high level we all had to stand on our feet. The TRIIINITY BAND: Daniel Powell, Rod “Hot Rod” Bonner, Brandon Sherman-Josey with special guest Kenny Hawkins took us there too! Lord Have Mercy! We all wanted to dance and we did!

We were a part of a unifying experience that night—and we watched as Drea produced harmony and joy like only a conductor could, with all the elements at her disposal.

“My goal is that through the art of music and visual production, I may build a platform and become a resource for my community, leaving a legacy for my 5 children.”

Who ‘Discovered’ Columbus?

Myths and Lies Revisited

G

enerations of Americans grew up learning that Christopher Columbus discovered the New World. But scholar Ivan Van Sertima, in his book, They Came Before Columbus reveals a compelling, dramatic, and superbly detailed documentation of the presence and legacy of Africans in ancient America. Examining navigation and shipbuilding; cultural analogies between Native Americans and Africans; the transportation of plants, animals, and textiles between the continents; and the diaries, journals, and oral accounts of the explorers themselves, Van Sertima builds a pyramid of evidence to support his claim of an African presence in the New World centuries before Columbus.

DNA evidence has also found that Polynesians settled in South America before Columbus traveled to the New World.

There’s also the very real fact that when Columbus arrived in the Americas in 1492, more than 100 million people inhabited the New World. G. Rebecca Dobbs wrote in her essay “Why We Should Abolish Columbus Day” that to suggest that Columbus discovered America is to suggest that those who inhabited the Americas are nonentities.

Dobbs argues: “How can anyone discover a place which tens of millions already know about? To assert that this can be done is to say that those inhabitants are not human. And in fact this is exactly the attitude many Europeans…displayed toward indigenous Americans.

We know, of course, that this is not true, but to perpetuate the idea of a Columbian discovery is to continue to assign a non-human status to those 145 million people and their descendants.”

Not only didn’t Columbus discover the Americas, he also didn’t popularize the idea

that the earth was round. The educated Europeans of Columbus’ day widely acknowledged that the earth was not flat, contrary to reports. Given that Columbus neither discovered the New World nor dispelled the flat earth myth, opponents to the Columbus observance question why the federal government has set aside a day in the explorer’s honor.

Columbus’ Impact on Indigenous Peoples

The main reason Columbus Day draws opposition is because of how the explorer’s arrival to the New World affected indigenous peoples.

European settlers not only introduced new diseases to the Americas that wiped out scores of Native peoples but also warfare, colonization, slavery and torture. In light of this, the American Indian Movement (AIM) has called on the federal government to stop observances of Columbus Day. AIM likened Columbus Day celebrations in the U.S. to the German people establishing a holiday to celebrate Adolf Hitler with parades and festivals in Jewish communities. According to AIM: “Columbus was the beginning of the American holocaust, ethnic cleansing characterized by murder, torture, raping, pillaging, robbery, slavery, kidnapping, and forced removals of Indian people from their homelands. …We say that to celebrate the legacy of this murderer is an affront to all Indian peoples, and others who truly understand this history.”

Christopher Columbus Monday in October, the same day as the federally recognized Columbus Day.Tribal members and other supporters say the move recognizes the rich history of people who have inhabited the area for centuries. "This action will allow us to bring into current present day our valuable and rich history, and it's there for future generations to learn," said Fawn Sharp, president of the Quinault Nation, a tribe on the Olympic Peninsula, who is also president of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians.

"Nobody discovered Seattle, Washington," she said to a round of applause.

Since 1990 the state of South Dakota has celebrated Native American Day in lieu of Columbus Day to honor its residents of indigenous heritage. South Dakota has a Native population of 8.8 percent, according to 2010 census figures. In Hawaii, Discoverers’ Day is celebrated rather than Columbus Day. Discoverers’ Day pays homage to the Polynesian explorers who sailed to the New World. The city of Berkeley, Calif, also doesn’t celebrate Columbus Day, instead recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day since 1992.

Building Future Leaders Conference Set On Saturday, October 10, Buffalo parents, teachers, and community members will join together with Citizen Action, the Alliance for Quality Education, and the Buffalo Public Schools to address the grassroots effort to keep children safe and in school at the Building Future Leaders Conference. The Jitu Brown Building Future Leaders Conference will focus on evidence-based, provento-work strategies for reducing absenteeism including implementation of meaningful parent and family engagement, community schools, and restorative justice practices.Participants will hear from two engaging speakers.

Hedy Chang, the Director of the National Organization, Attendance Works, will offer tools to help keep students in school. Jitu Brown, the National Director of the Journey for Justice Alliance, will speak to everyone about the importance of family engagement. There will also be workshops throughout Hedy Chang the day on topics such as:increasing attendance; alternatives to suspensions and restorative justice; community school; special education and many more.

There is no mention of Africans working as slaves or being slaves, she pointed out, “ It just says we were workers.”

The Texas mom’s voice was heard; McGraw-Hill took to its Facebook page to acknowledge the mistake, adding that it would fix it in the digital version and the next print run of the book.

“This is change people!!!” Dean-Burren wrote in part on her own Facebook page after seeing McGraw-Hill’s decision. “This is why your voices matter!!!

King Becomes US Secretary of Education : Leaves Legacy of Oppressive Mandates for Buffalo Schools and Across the State...

L

ast Friday’s announcement that Dr. John B. King, Jr will be appointed Acting US Secretary of Education has generated much speculation about what this could mean for the Buffalo Schools. Both his supporters and critics can envision the positives and negatives associated with Dr. King’s powerful new role. And given his prior history with, focus on and knowledge of the challenges of urban districts, Buffalo as a prime example, one can imagine that the city schools may receive special attention from the new Secretary.

Contrary to popular belief, however, Buffalo is not unique in this state or in the country for that matter for the distinction of having a school district with serious problems. Yet Dr. King will undoubtedly call on his New York State experience and use Buffalo and other urban districts (Rochester and Syracuse) as exemplars of his philosophy of how to fix “failing schools.“ He doesn’t officially assume his position until December. In the meantime, both his record in New York State and his blueprint for the direction he will take US SED will be the subjects of further conversation and scrutiny. As for his Buffalo record, let me remind the readers of a few of Dr. King’s decisions that adversely affected our School District.

Remember: as the Commissioner, he made the phrase “building the plane, while flying it”, describing the implementation of the Common Core and its accompanying high stakes testing system, the rallying cry for every questionable educational “reform” idea that is poorly conceived and even more poorly implemented. The current approach to create Receivership schools is another example of the mentality that produced the former expression. In fact it appears that the State Education Department under its present leadership is continuing to walk in the path(s) built by John King.

Remember: as the Commissioner, he forced the District to send East and Lafayette High School students to BOCES for CTE (vocational) programs, Barbara Seals many of which are offered in the District. This unfunded mandate cost the nearly $8,000 in tuition for each student (almost double the expense Nevergold District to offer the same vocational course in the District). The results? In 2013-14: 33 of 77 (43%) students sent to BOCES passed their courses. The following year, 2014-15, 52 of 96 students or 54% were on track to complete the BOCES classes. In contrast, the graduation rate for students completing programs in the Buffalo CTE schools exceeds 86%.

Remember: as the Commissioner, he appointed Dr. Judy Elliott, in 2012, as the Distinguished Educator. She was reappointed in 2013 and 2014. She was hired “to assess the learning environment in the District’s Persistently Lowest Achieving and Priority Schools, serve as ex-officio member of the District’s Board of Education, and review and make recommendations regarding the plans developed by the District for its Persistently Lowest Achieving and Priority Schools”.

This is another State mandate that cost the District $110,000 to $120,000 for each year of this consultancy. During her tenure, Dr. Elliott developed action plans but it remains to be seen what improvement has resulted from this work. In fact, given the continued pressure on the District during her term and impending Receivership, one would have to conclude that Dr. Elliott has not helped the District to improve its priority and focus schools. It should be noted that the evaluation of Dr. Elliott’s performance is the purview of the Commissioner. However, as with her appointment the Board has never been consulted regarding her performance. And to my knowledge, no evaluation has been shared or made public by the Commissioner. What does this say about the equity of the State’s accountability standards? Buffalo was used as the testing ground for a new strategy that didn’t work for us and since no other District in the State has a DE apparently is not a workable strategy for school improvement anywhere.

A year ago, last December; the picture was very different for Dr. King. He left the New York State Education Department for Washington. Supporters lamented his leaving but there were many opponents who thought it was time for a change. I wrote a column at the time and since we’re remembering Dr. King, the Commissioner of NY SED, here is the concluding paragraph: Will Dr. King be missed? Most certainly. Should we be worried? Not in the least. His legacy, not just in Buffalo but across this state is one of oppressive mandates, seemingly personal petty politics, failure to dialogue with parents and other stakeholders, insistence on imposing the Common Core and incessant standardized testing tied to teacher evaluation and other “reforms” that have not been validated. The results, however, have been detrimental to the educational system statewide. So as Dr. King exits the State Education Department and the Regents begins a national search, we must be vigilant to demand that the next Commissioner provide the open, transparent and honest interaction that has been demanded of us.

As Dr. King takes the reins of his new position, I think the last sentence could easily apply to him as public education advocates across this nation will demand accountability, transparency and communication with the incoming Secretary. I look forward to Dr. King’s next visit to the Buffalo Public Schools. His dialogue with the Board should be quite interesting; that is if he meets with all of us.

Justice Denied: But at Least I Can Say I Tried!

Dear Editor Earlier in the year, when I learned of the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Rose Sconiers, I announced that I would seek the nomination of the Democratic P a r t y to replace this J u d g e who has served as a superior Jurist and individual who has Judge McLeod made the African American community proud of her tenure. I made this decision based on a number of factors that included with her departure; minority representation on this important Court would be diminished. I notified the appropriate party leaders (Black and White) of my intentions, and I began to seek support for my candidacy. It was during this same time period that the N.A.A.C.P., Black Leadership Forum, B.U.I.L.D., the Baptist Minister’s Conference and the Concerned Clergy Coalition of Western New York met with the Democratic Party Chair urging the party’s endorsement of an African American to replace Justice Sconiers on the Court. Unfortunately their request fell on deaf ears.

As a result of the actions taken at the Democratic Judicial Convention on September 28 my efforts have been unsuccessful and our communities efforts for inclusion on the bench have been denied.

I am greatly disappointed by the fact that the decision by the Democratic Party NOT to replace Justice Sconiers with a well qualified and experienced person of color (whether myself or my colleague Judge Givens) sends the

Dr. Underwood Files Civil Rights and Racial Discrimination Charges Against Roswell

n September, 2008, on his first day in Buffalo, Dr. Willie Underwood checked into the Black community by appearing on Kirkland’s Corner to introduce himself to the community. His credentials include a Doctorate in Medicine (MD), a Master’s of Science Degree in Anatomy and Cell Biology, and a Master’s of Public Health Degree in Health Management and Policy. He was also the former Chief of Urology Services at the Ann Arbor Veterans’ Administration; a staff Physician and Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology at the University of Michigan; and an Assistant Professor of Urology at Wayne State University and Karmanos Cancer Institute.

TED On that same day Dr. Underwood, a KIRKLAND prominent Black medical doctor, surgeon and research scientist, joined the staff at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI). Now, seven years later, he has filed a federal civil rights complaint against his employer and immediate supervisor, James Mohler. Such action is quite rare among Blacks of his profession.

Filed as case 1:15 -cv-00684-FPG –Document 1 on July 28, 2015 with the United States District Court Western District of New York, the claim alleges numerous instances of racial discrimination and civil rights violations against his person as a Black American citizen of these United States.

In his 35 page document, Dr. Willie Underwood, 111, MD., charges Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and Dr. James Mohler, individually, and as Chair of the Department of Urology, with discrimination and violating his civil rights. Dr. Underwood says this action was brought because he was discriminated against based upon his race in the terms and conditions of his employment, including pay, benefits, scheduling, responsibility, and allowing him to perform various professional duties, among many other terms and conditions of employment. He further claims this action is brought because he was retaliated against after filing a charge of race discrimination with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the New York Division of Human Rights. Also, his claim to bring this action is because he was retaliated against for informing his superiors and members of RPCI’s administration of numerous and very serious concerns about patient care, maintenance of database and funding.

It had been rumored that Dr. Underwood was no longer welcomed at Roswell Park, and accordingly was slated to be fired. However, he had become ingratiated in the Black community as an expert on prostate cancer prevention and other health issues. As a result, members of the Black community responded in kind, from lay persons to pastors of several churches. Letters were sent to Dr. Donald Trump, executive director of Roswell Park protesting the intended firing of Dr. Underwood. Dr. Trump’s response was that Underwood would not to be fired; I received one of those letters. (This Donald Trump mentioned is not the Donald Trump campaigning for president).

Shortly afterward, Dr. Underwood said he was sent to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester for additional training where he remained for several weeks. Upon his return to Roswell, according to sources, Dr. Underwood was not given duties as an urologist or surgeon, thus leaving the urology department without a single Black urologist, since Underwood was the only Black urologist at RPCI, and one of two in all of Buffalo. Then Dr. Trump suddenly resigned as executive director and has left Buffalo.

Burchfield Exhibit is Tribute to Buffalo’s First Black Architect

T

he Burchfield Penney Art Center at SUNY Buffalo State will present an exhibition on the trailblazing designer who opened the gates for future Black architects. The exhibition is entitled, “Through These Gates: Buffalo’s First African American Architect, John E. Brent.” It will open Friday, October 9, 2015, 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm and continue through Sunday, March 27, 2016.

'Through These Gates' will explore significant contributions to architectural and landscape design by John Edmonston Brent (1889-1962) constructed in the Greater Buffalo-Niagara region and how he served as a civic leader, community mentor and role model.

Brent was the first president of the Buffalo Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which he helped to John E. Brent establish in 1914. Also ecognized in the field for his accomplishments, Brent was an early member of the American Institute of Architects.

He was one of 10 unsung designers who helped build America. “African-Americans who helped build the United States faced enormous social and economic barriers,” wrote architectural scholar Jackie Craven. “In 1930, only about 60 Black Americans were listed as registered architects, and many of their buildings have since been lost or radically changed. Buffalo-based Robert Trayham Coles designed on a grand scale,” she said. “Founded in 1963, Coles’ firm ranks as one of the oldest in the Northeast owned by an African American.”

Among Brent’s most significant architectural designs, and his first large commission, was the Michigan Avenue Branch Y.M.C.A. In 1926, he was just the second African American architect in the nation to receive a commission from the Young Men’s Christian Association for designing a branch building.

The structure was demolished in 1977.

In 2013, Brent posthumously received recognition in Buffalo when Gates 3 and 4 at the Buffalo Zoo were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The exhibition will feature Brent’s designs through vintage and contemporary documentary photographs, as well as original drawings, blueprints or true-scale copies, personal memorabilia, and a facsimile set of Buffalo Zoo gates.

Through These Gates is co-curated by Christine Parker, SUNY Buffalo State graduate student and Diversity Research Fellow and Nancy Weekly, SUNY Buffalo State instructor of museum studies. Weekly is organizing the exhibition as head of The Center’s collections and its Charles Cary Rumsey curator for the museum.

The exhibition is dedicated in memoriam to the late SUNY Buffalo State history professors Edward O. “E.O.” Smith, Jr., Ph.D., and Felix L. Armfield, Ph.D., who were instrumental in its earliest conception and research.

ver 200 mourners attended the homegoing services at True Bethel Baptist Church on Friday, October 2 for native son Frederick Chesson, affectionately known as “Freddy C.” Freddy, who started his concert promotion career in Buffalo, did marketing and promotions for concerts across the nation. He departed this life September 23, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia.

At an early age Fred accepted Christ when he was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Boyd in Buffalo.

Freddy C completed his education at Elementary School #75, Woodlawn Jr. High school and graduated from East High School. He later went on to Erie Community College and received an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice. Freddy had a personal and professional passion for music and promoting. In high school, he was in the East High School Band. Following high school, he founded the Stone Funk City Band, which included Mazeo, Gordy, Hank, sly and Willie. His band played in Buffalo, Rochester and surrounding cities where they gained a lot of recognition. While in college, Fred was selfemployed as a Home Improvement Contractor.

In 1982 he was a part of C&C Promotions, which promoted local talent in the City of Buffalo. In 1983 he joined forces with Haymon Entertainment and started Freddy C Promotions. From there, he did all of the marketing for Alan Haymon and filled enormous concert halls throughout the United States. He also promoted some of R&B’s greatest entertainers such as: The Jacksons, Janet Jackson, Usher, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Ms. Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston, The O’Jay’s, The Whispers, Gerald Levert, Destiny’s Child, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Maze ft. Frankie Beverly, Silk, Nelly, Busta Rhymes, Keith Sweat, Steve Harvey, Mary J. Blige and Lil Wayne, to name a few. In 1987, Freddy C received the Black Achievement Award for his role in the music industry.

His love and affection will always be remembered and admored by his three children, Latrese Chesson-Hayes (Wyatt) of Buffalo, NY, Jewel and Brian Chesson, both from Atlanta, GA and Pamela Chesson (their mother); one sister, Cynthia (Ben) Burke of Los Angeles, CA; seven brothers, John (Deborah) Chesson, Terrance (Bertha) Chesson, William Taliaferro, Lawrence (Catrena) Gadley, Victor Hampton, all of Buffalo, NY and Troy (Carla) Whigham of Boston, MA; four granddaughters, Mykaila Thomas, Tonie Jacobs, Sydne Chesson, all of Atlanta, GA and Raniyyah Spruill of Buffalo, NY; two grandsons, Cinsere Jacobs of Atlanta, GA and Ryan Scott of Buffalo, NY. Four exceptionally devoted friends, Alan Haymon, James Greene, Linda Thomas and Keisha Herring and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

The family entrusted the care of their loved one to Brian K. Lewis Funeral Home.

In a last class act, a horse drawn carriage took him to this final resting place. Interment was at Forest Lawn Cemetery. May his soul rest forever in the Etnernal Fields of Peace.

As I left the Judicial Convention, one person said, “it looks like we’ve been denied Justice…again!” I am disappointed by the fact, hundred’s of people of color (especially men) will continue to appear in Supreme Court only to see we are not fairly represented. More importantly, I am disappointed that we will continue to tell our youth to “stay in school, do your best and you can achieve anything”, only to know in Western New York that does not seem to apply to those of color.

Although disheartened by the result, I can hold my head high , knowing I at least, did the right thing and stood up for my community.

I thank the countless numbers of people, known and unknown, who gave me their support. Special thanks to Legislator Betty Jean Grant, who had the courage to nominate me and NYS Assemblywoman Crystal PeoplesStokes, who had the courage to second the nomination.

These two women - the only two African Americans who voted for me along with several White delegates - at least afforded me the opportunity to address the body and state my case for the endorsement.

Although space does not allow for the publishing of all 159 justifications for Dr. Underwood’s complaint; this may become the most important racial discrimination civil rights case in Buffalo during this 21st Century involving a Black medical doctor vs. a state and federally funded hospital specializing in Cancer treatment, and the white chair of the urology department. With such a high percentage of Black male prostate cancer patients in Western New York, one must wonder why only one Black urologist at RPCI? A jury trial has been requested by Dr. Underwood’s legal team headed by the law firm of Catherine Creighton of Creighton, Johnsen and Giroux according to the 35 page document.

During Dr. Underwood’s problems at Roswell, a group of Black educators were going through similar challenges and indignities in the Buffalo Public School system. Their qualifications, credentials, and training were also being challenged by whites.

This involved former Buffalo Board of Education Superintend, Pamela Brown, and her

aides: Mary Guinn, Yamilette Williams, Faith Alexander, and Terry Rose. All with PhDs in education and beyond, who came from outside of Buffalo to save our children. They were ultimately forced out of their positions and have left town. **** Shellonnee Chinn was the only Black teacher employed at Elmwood Franklin School, one of the most elite private schools in Buffalo in its 127 years of existence. She holds a M.S Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Medaille College and is a Consultant for the Magic Penny Early Institute. After 14 years at Elmwood Franklin School, she suddenly found herself placed on leave as of February 11, 2015. It seems that she was relieved of her teaching duties because she was disrespectful and showed unprofessional conduct toward white workers. **** A few weeks ago, a group of Black workers from Roswell Park Cancer Institute held a meeting under a shel-

ter in the Martin Luther King Park, which I attended. They represented the lower paying staff at RPCI. I was invited to hear their complaints of racial discrimination and racism.

Several brought their children, despite the fear of being seen and losing their jobs.

There are two very distinct common denominators. First, they are Black and powerless.

Second, they find themselves alone and unorganized, without any outside assistance.

But the same is not true of Roswell Park or Elmwood Franklin.

It seems that Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Elmwood Franklin School are united from the top down. Michael L. Joseph is president of Roswell Park Board of Directors and of Elmwood Franklin School Board of Trustees. He is also President of Clover Management, and serves on numerous boards throughout the Buffalo area.

Whether Blacks are educators, Fruit Belt victims, unemployed, victims of police brutality, prisoners, poverty victims, poorly educated, or prominent physicians like Dr. Underwood, they are all alike and treated the same when racism is a factor.

Satterwhite was elected President of Men Allied for the Need to Understand Prostate Cancer (MANUP) Buffalo, a volunteer organization that was formed in Buffalo in 2008 and is comprised of a diverse group of men, including many prostate cancer survivors. MANUP Buffalo provides men with educational resources to help them make informed decisions about their prostate health, and issues related to prostate cancer screening and early detection, treatment options and survivorship.

For the past four years, MANUP Buffalo has partnered with RPCI to host the annual Cruisin’ for a Cure Buffalo Car Show and Prostate Cancer Screening event. “The event uses the love of classic cars as the ‘hook’ for men to come here, receive prostate cancer education and a free screening,” explains Satterwhite.

“We have screened more than 300 at-risk men since our first show in 2011. We have proven that this event does indeed save men’s lives.”
