URMC Pathology Employee Leads BILLS UPDATE By George Radney Hurricane Relief Effort for Dominica Bills Blow out Raiders An employee from the De-

partment of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at University of Rochester Medical Center started a charity drive to collect items to help the victims of Hurricane Maria.

Julia Polidore (in photo left) is a native of Dominica, a small, independent country in the northeastern Caribbean. Her parents were among those affected by the destructive hurricane.

Polidore has worked in Histopathology for 13 years and is currently a student at the Warner School of Education pursuing her doctorate degree in Education and Human Development.

She explained that Dominica already has a shaky economic infrastructure and widespread poverty. Her parents pastor two churches that will distribute any donated goods they receive to the local villages. “Because there is limited access to goods and resources, it’s more than likely that the villages are going to depend on the churches for help,” said Polidore.

She thanked those participating in the collection effort and said it will make a real impact on those in need. “For me, this is very faith-driven,” she said. “It exemplifies what it means to be the hands and feet to help those who can’t help themselves.

Kyle Williams’ game depended on Marcel being double teamed next to him game in and game out. You will gradually see Kyle’s name not being called much in upcoming games.

Bills rookie wide receiver Zay Jones : “My job is to catch what is thrown to me; I’m still learning and the speed of the game is starting to slow down for me. We enjoyed the win and reflect on it then move on to next game. It’s the NFL’s best of the best and the competition level is raised and I’m getting the hang of it being a faster game with more things to be aware of.”

Yes, it’s a short week with the nationally televised game in New York on Thursday night. I see a defensive struggle between the two teams with very good defensive lines, but both teams having several injuries in their secondary.

AREA BRIEFS Out of the Shadows: John Edmonston Brent During November, Preservation Buffalo Niagara (PBN) will partner with curator Christine Parker to have a special exhibition in the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library’s Central Library about the life of John E. Brent, Buffalo’s first AfricanAmerican Architect. There will be opening remarks on Thursday, November 2 at 5:30 p.m. where Ms. Parker will introduce the exhibit and show her newly completed John E. Brent Documentary. For nearly five decades, John E. Brent designed dozens of John E. Brent religious and commercial structures for private clients, and countless pools, playgrounds, and landscapes as a landscape architect for the City of Buffalo. As a draftsman, architect, and landscape architect, John E. Brent has left a lasting imprint on our historic built environment and this exhibit will bring those achievements to light. This exhibition is made possible by support from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and First Niagara Foundation.

Cariol Horne to Receive Eye On History Award The Eye On History Award will be presented to former police officer Cariol Horne on Sunday, November 12 at the Merriweather Library from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. The Eye On History Award is presented to individuals in the community who have made outstanding contributions in unique and special ways.

Cariol Horne is being honored for her courage in saving the life of an African American male. The community is invited to come out to support Cariol. Admission to the program is free. his is one of the most important races of the year,” declared Assembly Woman Crystal Peoples-Stokes during a recent press conference endorsing Bernie Tolbert for Erie County Sheriff.

She could not have been more correct.

Over the years this newspaper has received countless letters from inmates about deplorable conditions and all too often physical abuse - at the Erie County Holding Center and the Erie County Correctional Facility at Alden.

The man that Bernie Tolbert is running to replace, Sheriff Timothy B. Howard, should have been gone a long time ago. Under his watch, the number of inmate deaths by suicide and abuse, lawsuits, criminal investigations and mismanagement, have been well documented.

Your vote is critical in that it can help bring about much needed change and restore civility and transparency to this law enforcement agency. That’s why it’s so important that you go to the polls next Tuesday and elect Bernie Tolbert as the next Erie County Sheriff.

Tolbert – despite withstanding the slings and arrows of outrageous political attack ads – has run a commendable, above board campaign. His “issues that matter” include the County Holding Center, street violence, the heroin and opioid epidemic and guaranteeing justice for all.

Mr. Tolbert is no lightweight and he returned home to this area several years ago to lend his skills and expertise to help build a city, county and community we can all be proud of.

Walter Moses Burton

Walter Moses Burton: The First Black Elected Sheriff in the United States Walter Moses Burton, born into the Maafa (slavery) in North Carolina was brought to Fort Bend County, Texas as a slave from North Carolina in 1850 at the age of twenty-one.

He was taught how to read and write by his enslaver Thomas Burke Burton . After the Civil War, his former slave master sold Burton several large plots of land for $1,900, making him one of the wealthiest and most influential Blacks in Fort Bend County.

In 1869, Burton was elected sheriff and tax collector of Fort Bend County, whee Blacks outnumbered Whites..

He was the first AfricanAmerican elected to public office in Fort Bend County.

He served as Sheriff and Tax Collector until 1873 using a white deputy to arrest any law breakers.

In 1873 Burton campaigned for and won a seat in the Texas Senate, where he served for seven years, from 1874 to 1875 and from 1876 to 1882.

He was one of only four African-Americans to be elected to the Senate in the 19th century.

Burton is best known for opposing county convict labor and helping to found Prairie View A&M University (which remains today as an one of America's Historic Black Colleges and Universities or HBCU)).

Tolbert Calls For The Reinstatement Of The Absentee Voting Notice The Erie County Board of Community Corrections Advisory Board Elections announced that their Bernie Tolbert, Democratic candidate for Erie County Sheriff recently called for the county legislature to reinstate the Erie County Community Corrections Advisory Board. The board, composed of community leaders from mental health, legal, government, and prisoner advocacy organizations, was created by the legislature in 2010 following an investigation into the mismanagement of the Erie County Holding Center by the U.S. Justice Department. It was effectively suspended in early 2014 when it was downsized by the legislature and vacant seats were left unfilled. The purpose of the board was to advise the sheriff and legislature on best practices and improvements in county jail management.

“In light of 22 inmate deaths including not only suicides but deaths by beating, abuse and neglect, a confirmed homicide, an apparent additional homicide now being litigated, a lawsuit against the County by the U.S. Justice Department, and an investigation and reprimand by the New York State Commission of Correction for hiding information about inmate deaths – not to mention the enormous cost to taxpayers of litigating and settling private lawsuits — Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard has lost the confidence of the public to properly manage the jails,” said Tolbert. “Having a fully functioning citizens advisory board will help provide constructive ideas for improving jail management and informing the public of efforts to make things better.”

“The residents of Erie County should know,” said Tolbert, “that this board is voluntary and costs the county nothing. Neither does it represent another layer of government bureaucracy.

The jails already have sufficient government oversight at the county, state and federal levels. Those agencies have found Sheriff Howard sorely lacking in his responsibilities. This board will provide advice as we fix the jails and be a conduit of information to a community that has been kept in the dark.”

Full Story of Deadly Niger Ambush

'White Lives Matter' rallies: Opponents outnumber white nationalists at Tennessee shout fests MURFREESBORO, Tenn.

— Opponents outnumbered white nationalists Saturday in peaceful "White Lives Matter" rallies in Tennessee that were punctuated by taunts and chants from both sides.

In Shelbyville, the site of the first rally, some 200 white nationalists — met by nearly twice as many counter protesters — carried a Confederate flag and chanted for closed borders and deportations at a mid-morning gathering.

As Brian Culpepper of the National Socialist Movement took the microphone to speak, counter protesters played Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech over their own speaker system, largely drowning out Culpepper's words.

At one point, counter protesters' shouts of "Black Lives Matter" were met by white nationalist chants of "blood and soil."

The two sides, however, were kept well apart as law enforcement officers funneled them onto sidewalks on opposite sides of a four-lane road.

The protesters showed up here and in Shelbyville, 25 miles south, despite comments by Gov. Bill Haslam that "these folks" were not welcome in the state.

Last Friday, a US official gave the fullest account yet of how the attack, which has been shrouded in secrecy and described murkily by US officials in Washington, played out.

They revealed that; • Hero Green Beret Sgt. La David Johnson died going BACK into the kill zone to save comrades... as survivors fought for their lives for TWO HOURS until French fighter jets reached them •Sgt. La David Johnson was in an armed Sgt. Johnson pick-up truck when the ambush started •His vehicle was in front of the Land Cruiser carrying Sgt. Bryan C. Black, Staff Sgt. Jeremiah W. Johnson, Sgt. La David Johnson and Staff Sgt. Dustin M. Wright •Johnson and his vehicle escaped the fire of 50 ISIS militants but then went back •They were trying to save the other four US men when they were all struck •Sgt. La.'s body was eventually given back to Nigerien troops by a village elder •That same village elder is suspected of stalling the troops before the ambush •The October 3 attack in Tongo Tongo, Niger, has been shrouded in secrecy •Sgt. Johnson's widow revealed this week that she still did not know how he died •The new details were revealed on Friday by an unnamed US official •Questions remain over why the lightly armed unit of just 42 soldiers was sent on a dangerous mission to capture an ISIS target with so few men and weapons •The official revealed the men were meant to have back-up but it could not go with them at the last minute

Uhuru Kenyatta Is Declared Winner of Kenya’s Repeat Election NAIROBI, Kenya — President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared on Monday the winner of Kenya’s presidential election — for the second time this year.

Mr. Kenyatta received nearly 7.5 million votes in the repeated vote, held last week, the national elections commission announced.

Mr. Kenyatta also won the first election, in August, by 1.4 million votes. But the opposition leader, Raila Odinga, challenged the results, and the Supreme Court nullified the election in September, citing irregularities.

Backers of Mr. Kenyatta interpreted both of his wins as broad national support for the president, but opposition supporters said they had twice been disenfranchised by a process that lacked credibility.

Mr. Odinga withdrew from the second election two weeks before the vote, arguing that the electoral commission could not oversee a free and fair process, and he called on his supporters to boycott. His name nevertheless appeared on the ballot, and he collected just over 73,000 votes, compared with nearly seven million in August.

Wooten Commands Attention With Riveting Performance

n Sunday October 22, it was all about that bass at Kleinhans Music Hall. Five time Grammy Award winning bass guitar player Victor Wooten took front and center stage with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Victor opened for famed "Super Fly" album creator, Curtis Mayfield, playing bass in an all Wooten brothers band at the age of five. He was voted bassist of the year by "Bass Player Magazine" three times in a row (making him the only player with more than one win), and he's toured as a trio with Marcus Miller and Stanley Clarke. I read that Victor was an original member of the group Bella Fleck and The Flecktones. I Googled Bella Fleck, a jazzy, blue grass fusion banjo player.

Oh great, I thought. This Wooten character is some sort of musician's musician. In other words, nobody else "gets" his genius but other musicians and this will just be an hour and a half long snooze-fest for the rest of us.

In collaboration with another composer, he wrote "The Bass Whisperer," a big orchestral piece featuring the bass guitar as the lead instrument. I have always loved the bass for its unsung ability to be in the background, yet holding it down as that strand of cable that truly anchors everything together in a song.

Sort of like "the strong, silent type" of father figure. At best I imagined this to be a performance of some self important studio session musician. At worst, it would be one long recreation of the Geico t.v. commercial where the triangle player jets out front for a grandstanding solo.

Victor commanded every bit of the audience's attention as the lead musician. He was really something to watch with his fingers working the entire neck of the instrument like two spiders sparring, creating expressions you'd never know a bass was capable of. We were riveted. Part Kool & the Gang meets flamenco, part Star Wars movie sound track, part Parliament and the Funkadelics, part Beethoven, part Sunday-mornin'-go-tomeetin'. Yet it all worked. Kind of like...a strand of cable that truly anchors everything together in a song. Only this time, with the spot light that it's always deserved.

Marcus Hutchins, director of athletics at The Park School of Buffalo, was entreated by friends to come witness the best bassist in the world. "They were 100% accurate" said Marcus who plans to ship Wooten's CD to his bassist cousin living in Maryland. "It was a blessing and an honor to see a young African American man mastering his craft at this level." Marcus' five year old cousin Amai wasn't quite so impressed though, critiquing Wooten with "he needs to play faster." Well there you go Victor, you've got ten more years to catch up to the next generation's expectations of you.

The legendary Fats Domino of New Orleans passed away last Tuesday at the age of 89, surrounded by friends and family.

According to TMZ, the Jefferson Parish, La., Coroner’s Office said that Domino died of natural causes..

S inger-pianist Antoine Domino Jr., known lovingly as “Fats” or “the Fat Man,” took over the musical scene in the United States in the ’50s and ’60s, with hits like “Blueberry Hill,” “Ain’t That a Shame,” “Blue Monday,” “I Want to Walk You Home,” “Walking to New Orleans” and “I’m Walkin.” His first million-selling record was aptly called “The Fat Man.” NPR notes that between 1950 and 1963, Domino made it to the R&B charts some 59 times, and also hit the pop charts 63 times. He outsold Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Buddy Holy combined, with only Elvis Presley—who cited Domino as a key influence—moving more records during the same time period.

At one point, surrounded by the Las Vegas press, Elvis, who admired Fats dearly, was asked a question by a reporter who referred to him by his common moniker: “the king.” Rather than accept the title and all the praise that would come along with it, Elvis alerted the media of Domino’s presence in the room.

“No, that’s the real King of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” said Elvis.

As TMZ reports, Domino sold more than 65 million records in his lifetime and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987, a year after he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He survived Hurricane Katrina (he had a mansion in the 9th Ward and was rescued by helicopter) and performed for benefit concerts and recordings to rebuild the ravaged city he loved.

elcome back Kings & Queens - Ladies & Gentlemen … Up next! coming to the page {stage} y'all put your hands together (clap) for this BY gifted wordsmith, a wiz with the wordplay, introducing my featured guest Eric Antony GOODNESS Maldonado.

His name is Eric Antony Maldonado; but more than that he's Cire Luey Freeman . [Cire is Eric spelled backwards] equal parts passion, poetry-in-motion, social conscious, and revolutionary -- a sometimes perverse cocktail not averse to controversy, always lit with the commentary. ("Get 'Em"!)

He's been enamored with the word since elementary school.

So it's no surprise he calls it Holmes. An indistinguishable mixture of African, Caribbean, and Spanish, his vocab is far from average.

An advent of his earthly father's talent, his write-ful inheritance.

He began to take the word serious in 2014 after witnessing Pure Ink and "GOODNE$$" perform for the kids.

He was shook, but inspired. It is what it is!

For the past three years he's spent countless hours writing, reading, advocating, researching Eric Antony Maldonado - "CIRE" and working to hone his craft & personhood. This gift has blessed him to be able to cross state lines; giving him mic's and ears across Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, Idaho and New York. {A Traveling Poet} He's even dabbled in emceeing going as far as to establish a relationship with the West Side's very own Rudeboyz Artworks in 2016. Mic Da Network was born as a result. So many talented artists have inspired and moved him, including Lissa Roads, the mind behind "Words on the Rocks." In February of 2017 she and Cire collaborated under her signature showcase to host two fantastic poets: Emery Diercks from Salina, Kansas and Buffalo's own Eve Williams Wilson, with musical interludes performed by Edryce Hasan, a Buffalo Native.

The Night was energetic and giving, and led to an early June 2017 collaboration between Diercks and Williams in Salina, Kansas "Underground Poetry on The B-Side" hosted by Eric "Cire" Maldonado.

When home, Cire can occasionally be found performing at the Gypsy Parlor on Grant St. as part of Pure Ink alternating biweekly open mic's and poetry slams at Nietzsche's on Allen St. for Monday night open mic; and at The Em Tea Coffee Cup Cafe' @ 80 Oakgrove & Hughes for WORDISM every third Saturday. Also at Rudeboyz Artwork on West Utica for Mic Da Network every Wednesday night; and most recently The Foundry on Northampton St. for Rock Da Mic on the last Thursday of every month.

When The Great American Novelist Toni Morrison Comes to Kleinhans November 9 It Will be an Historic Day...

On November 9, exactly 50 years to the day of Dr. Martin Luther King’s Historic speech at Kleinhans Music Hall in 1967 on “The Future of Segregation,” Toni Morrison, the Great American Novelist, will grace the very same stage, culminating Just Buffalo Literary Center’s ambitious new program, The Civil Writes Project.

The Project has been boldly confronting the history of segregation through a series of over a dozen interconnected programs around the city, leading up to the Nobel Prize winner’s historic appearance at the Just Buffalo Literary Center’s BABEL series next week. Recognized as one of the most influential writers in American literature, she was the first African American to win the Nobel Prize for literature. Her major novels include The Bluest Eye, Sula, Song of Solomon, Tar Baby, Beloved, Jazz, Paradise, Love, A Mercy, Home and God Help The Child.

One of the programs ushering in Toni Morrison’s much anticipated visit, will feature Dr. Alexis De Veaux who will facilitate a conversation on “The Future of Freedom” at Canisius College’s Montante Cultural Center, 2001 Main Street this Thursday, November 2 from 7-9 p.m. It’s a presentation you don’t want to miss!

ust Buffalo Literary Center’s THE CIVIL WRITES PROJECT continues with non-stop programming leading up to Nobel prize winner Toni Morrison’s BABEL appearance on November 9th at Kleinhans Music Hall. This historic event marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "The Future of Integration" speech here in Buffalo--50 years to the day on the exact same stage.

In anticipation of this momentous event, award-winning author Alexis De Veaux will facilitate a conversation on “The Future of Freedom” at Canisius College’s Montante Cultural Center, 2001 Main St, on Thursday, November 2nd, from 7:00-9:00 pm. Using Dr. King's "The Future of Integration" as the inspiration for this conversation, De Veaux hopes to focus the discussion on what the word "freedom" means in the current moment.

“We can barely imagine the so-called Founding Fathers, and they most certainly couldn’t imagine us today,” said De Veaux in an interview last week.

In her award-winning novel, Yabo, expressions of freedom are everywhere, and overlapping--the freedom to express gender as one sees fit, the freedom to pursue sexual pleasure (with consent), the freedom to simply be in the body you are born with or choose to alter, all-encompassing freedoms that are both simple and complex, prosaic and poetic.

Dr. DeVeaux It would be foolish to think that De Veaux loses site of the Black body and how it has even farther to go towards achieving freedom. In Yabo one of the characters, a professor, requires her students to sit in a dark classroom, chairs so close together that knees touch, hands in chains, with sounds of the ocean waves hitting a boat, so that they can better understand what people actually went through, what happened to their bodies. However freedom, for De Veaux, would require everyone to be free, which includes, for example, white people being freed from being tools of racial

oppression.

Sound like the right person to lead a community conversation about the future of freedom? We think so too.

When asked what to expect at this event, De Veaux said, “I do not want to be 'the expert' up there who gives a lecture and then takes a few questions.” So what should people expect? “I have a few prompts if things slow down, but I really feel this is a conversation that many people want Continued Page 15

Black Lives Will Never Matter Until They Matter To Us… Let’s just be honest, here. The reason we say that Black lives matter – is because we’re wisely, consciously calling into existence a new reality – one that will replace the current reality – in which they actually, factually, don’t. How long it will take to manifest our new vision? That depends on one critical question. When we say that “Black Lives Matter,” just who are we trying to convince?

On January 7, 2015, two men attacked the offices of the newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris, France, killing 17 people. Killing had already begun on January 3rd in the town of Baga, in Northern Nigeria four days before, and culminated on the same day as the Hebdo incident. But Baga had been attacked by an entire army, and more than 2,000 mostly women and children lay dead. World leaders descended on France, and news coverage of the Hebdo attack was non-stop, while Nigeria barely received a mention.

On August 14th of this year, a mudslide swallowed over a thousand people in Sierra Leone, and on October 14th, a massive truck bomb in Mogadishu, capital of Somalia killed more than 500. Still, this incident received only a mention. There was far more news coverage of the 58 who died in the Las Vegas, Nevada shooting from the Mandalay Bay Hotel on October 1st. We can’t say it was because news in our own country took precedence, not after the Hebdo incident in France. That incident proved that it’s White lives that take precedence. The Las Vegas shooting re-affirmed it. Think about it. That incident was called the “worst mass shooting in American history.” Really?

In December of 1890, the murder of Chief Sitting Bull at the Standing Rock reservation in South Dakota had prompted Chief Spotted Elk (Big Foot) of the Minneconjou Sioux to lead his band of 350 people to the Pine Ridge (reservation) Agency

But we have also seen many people come forward who never have before, and who want to work together to figure out tomorrow,” De Veaux said. “Now, I’m not so foolish as to necessarily believe or have hope that this will happen quickly—what is hope anyway?—but I do think we would be foolish not to try and work together on building tomorrow.”

Alexis De Veaux was born and raised in Harlem, the product of two merging streams of Black history in New York City–-immigrants from the Caribbean on her mother’s side and migrants from North Carolina on her father’s side-–who settled in Harlem in the early decades of the Twentieth Century. As a freelance writer and contributing editor for Essence Magazine in the 1980s, Alexis penned a number of socially relevant articles, traveling on behalf of the magazine to Zimbabwe, Kenya and Egypt. She was chosen by the magazine to go to South Africa in 1990 to interview Nelson Mandela upon his historic release from prison, making her the first North American writer to do so. As an artist and lecturer she has traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America, Japan and Europe. Alexis published a second award-winning children’s book, An Enchanted Hair Tale (1987) before moving to Buffalo, where she finished graduate school, earning a doctorate in American Studies in 1992. A project nearly ten years in the making, her biography of Audre Lorde, Warrior Poet (2004) has been the recipient of several awards, including the Gustavus Meyers Outstanding Book Award (2004), the Lambda Literary Award for Biography (2004), the Hurston/Wright Foundation Legacy Award, Nonfiction (2005).

for safe haven. The Seventh Cavalry moved to intercept them, and confiscated their weapons. After a shot rang out, the Cavalry opened fire, and a machine gun positioned on a hill ripped into the tipis where women and children were sheltering. As they ran for cover, the soldiers continued to cut them down until at least 300 lay dead.

The massacre at Wounded Knee might have been the largest mass shooting in American history, but we can’t really know that without accurate numbers of those gunned down in Rosewood, Florida, and Greenwood in Tulsa when White mobs savaged those towns. We do know that hundreds were killed.

What about mass killings that didn’t use guns? For those who cling to the romantic notion that the Union army fought to end the inhumanity of slavery, know that it was the Union Army that recaptured freed slaves during and after the Civil War and forced them back into hard labor camps. It was they who snatched up and re-enslaved Black men in Natchez, Mississippi, and caged their women and children, 20,000 of them in the cavernous pit called the “Devil’s Punch Bowl.” There they screamed, cried, and begged for mercy until they died of starvation and small pox infection.

We could make ourselves dizzy listing the numbers who perished during the scourge of lynching, or from the Tuskegee Syphilis experiment, or from the biological weapon known as AIDS, the cruelty of the response to Hurricane Katrina, the fratricide instigated by police agents - and those of us they shoot themselves. We can’t calculate the damage done by lead in inner city water supplies, chem trails, toxic waste, and biological agents pumped into our living spaces. But we do know one thing. To say that the Las Vegas incident was the largest mass killing – or mass shooting in American history is to confirm unequivocally – that only White lives matter. The recent response to the NFL protests should stamp this message deep into our awareness. Poll after poll shows that the majority of White America does not support those protests. They do not care about the bullets pumped into our baby, Tamir Rice, or into our teens, Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin and Renisha McBride…or any of us. Run for me. Jump, throw, catch, and bleed for me, but do not bring that **** into my recreation.

Shut up nigger, and play ball.

This conversation is critical to our noble determination to make Black lives matter. Isn’t it really okay that White people cherish their own lives? If they haven’t shown the ability to extend human caring to our lives, shouldn’t we have as our number one concern - a return to love for ourselves? The horrifying truth is that newspapers in Nigeria also didn’t carry the story of the massacre in the town of Baga. The president, Goodluck Johnathan, and Nigeria’s Finance Minister both sent condolences to France and Charlie Hebdo, but said nothing about the town of Baga. Nothing.

It really does make sense that we’ve closed off our hearts in an effort to simply survive this continuing Maafa. Who has the strength, after all we’ve been through, to contemplate, process, and absorb the depth of hatred that caused the whole world to watch for three months as a million people were slaughtered in Rwanda and Burundi in 1994? Who among us can bear the knowing - that after centuries of conditioning, we did that to ourselves? How can we bear the knowing…that all of Africa watched… and did nothing?

Black lives will not matter – until they matter to us. This is not the re-direction to so-called “Black on Black crime” that so many sambos among us are guilty of offering. It’s a call to take sober account of what’s been done to us, and to focus on our healing. In the depths of our suffering lies the strength and the resolve to make our lives truly matter. Don’t shy away. Teach the babies. From the realms where we’ve sent our prayers, they’ve brought back the answers. And as for those who wasted us, all those with eyes can see… that a just universe has them firmly in its grip, and is avenging us right now. For their treachery and their recalcitrance, there will be no absolution.

ear Editor: Next week Tuesday November 7, 2017 is Election Day. We have a few major issues facing our community, the office of Mayor, and Erie County Sheriff, and three major propositions that will be on the back of each ballot that are very important to our everyday life.

Your vote is very important this year. We The People have the power to make a positive change. We must be selective in how we come out and cast our VOTES. I encourage residents to become smart voters. Don’t vote for anyone that you don’t know, and do not vote for anyone just because they are Democrat or Republican or any other political affiliation. If you do not know them and are not familiar with their platform do not vote!

As this election year relates to the mayoral race, please join me in casting your vote for the office of Mayor. If you are tired of Mayor Brown, and you believe in term limits for all elected offices, I urge Democrats to cross party lines and vote for Mark J. F. Schroeder on the REFORM Line 11-H for Mayor. Mayor Brown won the September Democratic Primary. Betty Jean Grant, and Mark J. F. Schroeder’s combined votes cast totaled 53%! Let’s make a real change for ALL of Buffalo. Look for the Reform party line on the left side of your ballot, count down to line 8, and then look across to the last column for Mayor.

Burton also served the Republican Party as a member of the State Executive Committee at the state convention of 1873, as vice president of the 1878 and 1880 conventions, and as a member of the Committee on Platform and Resolutions at the 1892 state convention.

Burton left the Senate in 1882 . He remained active in state and local politics until he died in 1913. He and his son Horace are buried in Morton Cemetery in Richmond. At the time, they were the only African-Americans laid to rest in Morton Cemetery, which had previously been a whites-only cemetery.
