Mayor Dedicates Road to Longtime City Employee and Visionary, Phil Banks Mayor Lovely A. Warren dedicated a previously unnamed road to longtime City employee Phil Banks, whose vision led to the cleanup of several Brownfield sites, paving the way for future job creation.

“Phil Banks dedicated his career to improving our community,” Mayor Warren said. “He was a true public servant, a visionary who put the community above all else.

We lost Phil too soon, but his legacy lives on. His work led to the creation of more jobs, safer and more vibrant neighborhoods and better educational opportunities, and for that we are grateful.”

Phil Banks Way leads to the former Photech Imaging site, located at 1000 Driving Park Ave. It was once a Brownfield site, abandoned in 1991 and contaminated with asbestos and other toxins.

While working as the City’s Manager of Business Development in 1998, Phil Banks saw the site not as it was, but as it could be – a hub for jobs and industry. He helped the City acquire the property, making it eligible for grant funding and assistance for cleanup.

For more than a decade, Phil worked with his colleagues in Economic Development and the Department of Environmental Services to secure the funds to remediate the site and return it to productive use. Unfortunately, Phil died in 2009 while serving as the City’s Deputy Commissioner of Economic Development.

In 2010, the final Photech building came down, and in 2014, the state cleared the site for development.

Earlier this year, the City sold the property to Imburgia Brothers Holdings, Inc., who plan to develop it for light industrial use.

“Phil Banks Way will be a road to innovation,” Mayor Warren said. “It will be a road to jobs. It will be a road to progress and prosperity. From this day forward, everyone who drives or walks or bikes past this road will be reminded that persistence pays off, and that even the most difficult challenges can be met.”

14-year-old Killed Over a Pair of Air Jordans

Denver, Colorodo -- The family of 14-year-old boy Treaujalaune Lornes said he was killed after he got into a heated argument at a car wash with another teen over his footwear last week. The argument continued at a house nearby where Treaujalaune was reportedly shot on the stairs, Denver7 reports.

The teen died after being rushed to a local hospital.

The alleged shooter, who cannot be named because he's a juvenile, was charged with manslaughter, second-degree assault, three counts of felony menacing, attempting to influence a public officials and juvenile in possession of a handgun, according to reports.

The victim's older sister said she talked to the other boy's mom before learning that he was the suspect.

"She told me, 'My son feels so bad. He cries every night and tells me that he sees Trey all over again every time he goes to sleep.

But to wake up this morning and know that you were the one that did that to him,' " she said, while shaking her head.

Police aren't releasing the name of the suspect because he's a juvenile. They say he is being held for investigation of manslaughter, second-degree assault, three counts of felony menacing, attempting to influence a public officials and juvenile in possession of a handgun.

The Denver District Attorney will make the final decision on what charges are filed.

The family has launched a GoFundMe page to help offset funeral costs.

Discriminatory Housing Ads on Buffalo's West Side Recently many people saw and shared a discriminatory Craigslist posting for a house on Buffalo’s West Side. The advertisement was explicitly racist, saying that the poster did not want people of certain races or ethnicities to apply to rent the house. After being notified of the posting, Western New York’s fair housing agency, Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME), conducted an investigation. The results of that investigation strongly suggest that the advertisement was not authentic. As Craigslist posts are anonymous, the actual poster is unknown, but the individuals whose phone numbers are included in the posting do not own or rent that property. Moreover, HOME’s investigation discovered additional Craigslist postings that target these individuals but were unrelated to housing.

While this particular advertisement appears fraudulent, HOME appreciates those who were outraged by the posting and sought to address the very real issue of discriminatory housing advertisements. For every fake ad, there are dozens of authentic ones, and HOME will investigate any discriminatory advertisements that are brought to its attention. Many of these discriminatory advertisements express a preference for or against a certain type of tenant, specify a certain number of people allowed to live in a unit, or state that the landlord does not accept Section 8 vouchers or other public assistance. All of these statements are discriminatory, and are just as unlawful as the sentiments expressed in this racist posting. Anyone who encounters a discriminatory housing advertisement is encouraged to share it with HOME via their social media accounts or using the “Report Discrimination” tool on homeny.or

CAO of WNY to Unveil Mobile Produce Market The Community Action Organization of Western New York, Inc. will unveil a new custom vehicle that will serve as its allnew CAO Mobile Market, bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to food deserts around Buffalo and Erie County, all year round.

Six to Receive Special Awards at 47th Annual Black Achievers Gala On Saturday, October 5, Black Achievers Inc. will honor 40 outstanding individuals when it hosts the 47th Annual Black Achievers Awards Banquet. Black Achievers CEO, Herbert L. Bellamy, Jr. has released the names of six others to be honored at the gala with special awards.

Black journalists honor the future of their profession

Carl R. Allen Memorial Scholarship to be presented Oct. 5 to Gabriella Hall The Buffalo Association of Black Journalists will hold its annual Carl R. Allen Memorial Scholarship Luncheon on Oct. 5. The annual event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at Mount Olive Baptist Church, 701 E. Delavan Ave. The luncheon and scholarship honor the trailblazing journalism of award-winning Buffalo News reporter Carl R. Allen. A Buffalo native, Allen reported comprehensively on issues of significance to the African American community. He died in 1999.

This year’s theme is “The Griot Renaissance: Black Journalists in the New Buffalo.” The keynote speaker, Dr. Anthony Neal, an associate professor in political science at SUNY Buffalo State, will explore bridging the gap from the oral tradition of Africa to Scholarship /winner: Gabriella S. today’s American journalism, in order to empower the Hall. commnity. This year’s recipient of the Carl R. Allen Memorial Scholarship is Gabriella S. Hall. A check for $1,000 will be presented to Hall during the event. A City Honors School graduate and University at Buffalo freshman, Hall is pursuing a dual major in communications and sociology, with a minor in journalism. “As a mixed-race Black woman and first-generation college student," Hall wrote in her BABJ scholarship submission, she seeks to “write redefining articles and pieces that challenge social constructs about race and the systems by which colored youth often feel oppressed by and excluded from.”

Fugitive Slave Acts -Part 2 of a 2-Part Series-

The Fugitive Slave Act of 1793 was immediately met with a firestorm of criticism.

Northerners bristled at the idea of turning their states into a stalking ground for bounty hunters, and many argued the law was tantamount to legalized kidnapping. Some abolitionists organized clandestine resistance groups and built complex networks of safe houses to aid enslaved Africans in their escape to the North.

Refusing to be complicit in the institution of slavery, most Northern states intentionally neglected to enforce the law.

Several even passed so-called “Personal Liberty Laws” that gave accused runaways the right to a jury trial and also protected free Blacks, many of whom had been abducted by bounty hunters and sold into slavery.

Did you know? The passage of the Fugitive Slave Acts resulted in many free Blacks being illegally captured and sold into enslavement. One famous case concerned Solomon Northup, a freeborn Black musician who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. in 1841.

Northup would spend 12 years as a slave in Louisiana before winning back his freedom in 1853.

By the mid-1800s, thousands of enslaved Africans had poured into free states via networks like the Underground Railroad.

Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 Following increased pressure from Southern politicians, Congress passed a revised Fugitive Slave Act in 1850.

Study Finds Black Women Murdered by Men Are Nearly Always Killed by Someone They Know, Most Commonly with a Gun

Judge Craig D. Hannah Sworn In As Buffalo City Court Chief Judge The Hon. Craig D. Hannah was officially sworn in as the Chief Judge of Buffalo City Court on Tuesday, September 17 in the Ceremonial Court Room of Buffalo City Court. Judge Hannah, 49, has been serving as Chief Judge since Judge Thomas P. Amodeo’s retirement in May of this year.

The ceremony was presided over by the Hon. Eugene M. Fahey, Associate Court of Appeals Judge. The Hon. Paula L. Feroleto, Administrative Judge of the Eighth Judicial District, gave the welcoming remarks. Remarks were also scheduled to be given by the Hon. Crystal Peoples-Stokes, Majority Leader of the NYS Assembly; the Hon. Byron W. Brown, Mayor of Buffalo; Erie County Court Judge Susan Eagan; Attorney John V. Elmore and Police Officer Roscoe Henderson, III. Blessings will be offered by Rev. Dwayne Jones, Pastor, Mt. Aaron Missionary Baptist Church; Rev. Kenneth A. Simmons, Pastor, Cold Springs Bible Chapel; and Rev. Ronald Coleman, Pastor, Faith Is the Victory Tabernacle.

Judge Hannah has been serving as a City Court Judge since January 2006. On May 1, 2019, he was appointed Chief Judge of the Buffalo City Court and Supervising Judge for the 11 City Courts within the Eight Judicial District. He has risen to national fame as the presiding judge of the first opioid intervention court in the United States, established in May 2017. He has been featured by such major publications as the New York Times, NBC News, the Denver Post and HBO Vice News. Judge Hannah prides himself on working with participants at a one-on-one level and “meeting them where they are” with their recovery.

Those who have completed the program credit Judge Hannah with saving theirs lives while he humbly defers and states that all the praise and credit is due to the participant!

Judge Hannah is a native of Western New York, a graduate of Canisius College, and a member of the UB School of Law Dean’s Advisory Council. He is married to Angela Hannah, and they have a lovely daughter, Taylor Marie Hannah. Congratulations Judge Hannah!

Washington, DC — Nine out of 10 Black women murdered by men are killed by someone they know, most often with a gun, according to the new Violence Policy Center (VPC) study When Men Murder Women: An Analysis of 2017 Homicide Data.

Each year the VPC releases this report in advance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. This year, its release comes following the February 2019 expiration of the federal Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

A bill to reauthorize VAWA has passed the U.S. House and is awaiting action in the Senate.

The study uses 2017 data, the most recent year for which information is available. The study covers homicides involving one female murder victim and one male offender, and uses data from the FBI’s Supplementary Homicide Report.

The study found that in 2017, 507 Black females were murdered by males in single victim/single offender incidents, at a rate of 2.55 per 100,000.

In comparison, the rate for White women murdered by males for that year was 1.13 per 100,000. Nationwide, across all races, 1,948 females were murdered by males in single victim/single offender incidents in 2017, at a rate of 1.29 per 100,000.

Firearms, especially handguns, were the most common weapons used by males to murder Black females. When the murder weapon could be identified, 62 percent of Black female victims were shot and killed with guns. Within that group, 72 percent were killed with a handgun.

“Women are most likely to be murdered with a gun wielded not by a stranger but by someone they know. In many instances the murderer is an intimate partner of the victim.

It is important to know these facts in order to identify effective strategies to prevent homicides against women. One critical step is for the U.S. Senate to follow the lead of the House of Representatives and pass legislation to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act,” states VPC Legislative Director Kristen Rand.

They also recognize and honor cancer survivors and share inspirational stories and messages of faith. Sadie Strong is a labor of love inspired by God and birthed out of Sharon "Sadie" Sanford's journey with breast cancer.

Here is the journey of one woman's experience with breast cancer and how she turned her trauma into triumph.

On October 30, 2017, Sharon "Sadie" Sanford received a phone call that rocked her world.

After a routine mammogram she was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma - breast cancer - that had spread to her lymph nodes. She sat in silence holding the phone as the doctor gave her instructions on what her next steps were. She was in shock and felt a whirlwind of emotions, questions and fear. She thought, what am I going to do? How did this happen to me? What about my husband and my children? Am I going to die? When she hung up the phone, she looked up and said, "God help me." Having a spiritual relationship with God, she knew that she could tap into God's promises of healing, restoration and comfort. God had to be her first option and not her last result. She needed strength that can only come from God to make it through what was to come.

She finally mustered up the courage to tell her husband the news. He said, "We have to go to Grandmother's and pray RIGHT NOW." They jumped in the car and drove to her grandmother's house. On the way, Sadie called her mother and father to share the news. Her next task was probably the most difficult. She had to tell her children. Breast cancer doesn't just impact the person diagnosed, it also impacts the people in their life who love them. Sadie made the decision to share her diagnosis with others because she wanted and needed the support of those around her. Each person handles their diagnosis differently and personally.

Next, Sadie enlisted the prayer warriors. They touched and agreed for her healing and affirmed that Sadie shall live and not die. She met with several doctors to get clarity on her diagnosis and treatment plan and began chemotherapy right away followed by surgery and radiation treatments. This process took about seven months. Just as fear began to creep in she received an encouraging note from her Sister Circle with a quote that said, "You have been assigned this mountain to show others that it can be moved." This became her mantra. She was ready for battle.

The Healing Journey As she progressed through her healing journey, Sadie was encouraged by the love, support, prayers and kindness shown to her during this process. She was inspired to create a t-shirt as a symbol of love, unity and support. The Sadie Strong shirt is neon pink and says "We Believe God." Her vision was to have people wear the shirts together, as an act of collective Praise and belief for her healing. She wanted to create a movement of people who believe God for EVERYTHING. As she researched breast cancer she was shocked by the statistics and high mortality rate of breast cancer among African American women. Sadie had been diligent in having annual mammograms out of routine and because she had insurance. She didn't really realize or understand at the time the importance of getting annual mammograms in early detection of breast cancer.

She didn't have a family history of breast cancer nor had anyone close to her been diagnosed.

She heard commercials about breast cancer, but it seemed far in the distance. Sadie had to do her part in spreading awareness of the importance of early detection.

Sadie Strong Love Boxes In an effort to pay it forward, Sadie Strong will distribute Love Boxes to women and men, who are recently diagnosed with breast cancer. The love boxes will be filled with items that encourage and uplift the spirits of those going through cancer treatments. Sadie Strong Love Boxes will be distributed in October and April. Nominations are currently being accepted for the October distribution. Local writer Traci Tillman has written a new book of poetry entitled “Inspirational Selections.”

Ms. Tillman grew up on Buffalo’s East Side. As a single mother at the age of 24, she returned to school to earn her GED. Now married and the mother of five and grandmother of six, Traci, recently at the age of 53, earned an associates degree in business administration and a minor in accounting from Erie Community College. Her poems “are a testimony to Traci’s deep faith in God and hope for a better future for all His children here on earth.”

The Jesse Clipper American Legion Post 430 was founded on September 16th 1919 by 15 African American World War I veterans. After its inception, the Post petitioned the Buffalo Common Council to establish a monument in honor of Jesse Clipper and all other African American soldiers from the War of revolution, through World War I, so their sacrifice would never be forgotten.

Today the monument is located at the Jesse Clipper Square at Michigan and William Street and has since been expanded to include the dates of all wars, in which African Americans has made the ultimate sacrifice for their county.

Change The Date Coalition Calls On Governor Cuomo To Sign Legislature Into Law Changing Date Of School Board Elections From May To November

Tashene “T-Jizzle” Eubanks Jr. sat down for an interview while in town recently for the Legendary Nights Tour. He discussed how his career began, empowering our youth and living in belief, not in fear.

By Shola Clark ashene “T-Jizzle” Eubanks Jr., a Buffalo native, “spontaneously” started his career in deejaying at age 12. His father, Tashene Eubanks Sr., who introduced the idea to him, called his son from work one summer day suggesting “it would be cool if you tried this out.” At first, TJ said he took the opportunity as something to “play with,” but it wasn’t long before he realized the potential and longevity in it all.

Given the name “T-Jizzle” by a childhood friend’s cousin, he is currently the DJ to Future, one of the biggest rap/hip hop artists in the music industry.

That’s a long way from his first love, football, (he’s a die-hard Patriots fan, but says “he’s not opposed to the Bills”). He and his dad even trained and planned for him to one day go to the NFL. At one point he also had aspirations to be a lawyer. TJ credits his family for giving him a foundation of discipline, which has guided him throughout his life. When he decided he wanted to take being a DJ serious, he recalls how his father made sure he dedicated time to his craft, making him practice for hours daily. His parents taught him the importance of catering to a crowd whether two or two hundred people, making him do mock shows for them in the living room. “Always play to the people, no matter how many people,” his father told him. His parents also laid the groundwork for his promotions, which he still applies today.

Well known DJ’s such as DJ Clue, DJ Kid Capri (his favorite), DJ Envy and DJ Drama were influential to T-Jizzle, but it was local DJ’s that gave him the framework. DJ Shay of Buffcity Records, gave him the groundwork of how to DJ and introduced him to vinyl and taught him how to scratch. Dj Spin, by way of Grassroots Graphics, introduced him to the digital side and using a laptop. He also credits his Godparents, Jeff and Joyce Nixon, who afforded him the opportunity at the NICYO to give parties; and Damone Brown and Dennis Wilson who gave him the gigs at clubs like Buffalo Live and The Good Life as well as showing him the importance of keeping good relationships with people.

Today, at the young age of 26, TJ has been in the game for fourteen years. T-Jizzle’s skill set – his vast knowledge of music, rhythm and technical know how - grew in the public eye when he became rap artist Future’s DJ, replacing his former DJ, DJ Esco. T-Jizzle had previously been acquaintances with Esco and they had a bond. When Esco decided to further his career he referred T-Jizzle to Future as his replacement. This opportunity led to him making appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show featuring Jimmy Fallon, Saturday Night Live, MTV

Video Music Awards, BET Awards, Coachella, Juno Awards, BBC Asia, MTV South African Awards, Grammy award parties, and working with artists like Drake, NAV, The Weekend and Bruno Mars. The most memorable experience he recalls, is being a member of the Summer 16’ Tour featuring Drake and Future, and performing in his hometown at the arena with his family stage side, doing a DJ set by himself that he describes as “nothing greater than that!” He said it was at that moment he knew he wanted “more of this…”

Currently with dual residency in LA and Buffalo, TJ’s upbringing in the Queen city has helped him adapt to the industry tremendously; giving him the sense that he was “bred to do this.”

He relates the industry and its numerous levels to moving throughout different neighborhoods in the Queen city; a habit he is very familiar with as he once moved four to five times over a five to six year period. TJ compares councilmembers to artists and districts to the different levels within the industry stating, “a different district means adapting to different people.” He also believes “living here you’re not spoiled to anything…you have nothing to lose.” His advice to anyone aspiring to be in the industry? “Know exactly what you want to do, because it takes a lot to get there but the hardest part is staying there.” He strongly encourages aspiring artists to “build a team, even if it’s just you and another person, someone you can bounce ideas off and get inspirations from.”

When asked about the Queen City’s role in developing and supporting the local talent, T-Jizzle affirms the city is making improvements to advance, but at this time it is not fully developed in the area of catering to the art and music coming out of this city. “There isn’t much to DJ in Buffalo or even places for artists to perform- we have work to do, all around,” he stated.

Going into his 15th year of deejaying, T-Jizzle describes the upcoming year as “The Ultimate Reward.” He says he will be doing more touring, spending more time in the studio, working more on production and with a wide range of artists. Also on his list of priorities is organizing school tours in the inner cities, as he has very real concerns about the youth, their future, and inspiring them. He was raised to believe “you never know what you can learn from someone else” and he is determined to be an example of that to the next generation.

T-Jizzle encourages the youth to stop living in FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), but instead take chances and believe things will work out because “we are in God’s favor already.” Using himself as a prime example said, “I never planned on deejaying for the people I’ve deejayed for...I planned on a bigger picture and everything in the middle God filled it up.”

In June 2019 the NYS Legislature passed Assembly Bill A4949b and Senate Bill S5224b which provides for election of members of the Board of Education of the Buffalo City School District in November rather than May. Supp0rting the bill was NYS Assembly Majority Leader Crystal PeoplesStokes (who actually sponsored the bill in the Assembly) and NYS Senator Tim Kennedy who sponsored the bill in the Senate. The Buffalo Common Council also passed a unanimous Home Rule message in full support of the Bill’s passage.

Change the Date Coalition , which supports moving the Board of Education elections from May to the election day in November, held a press conference at Mt. Olive Baptist Church last Wednesday calling on Gov. Cuomo to sign the legislation into law. The change, they say, would ensure greater participation, lower costs, more convenience and a greater democratic process.

Voter participation on the May School Board election is historically extremely low – averaging 8-10 percent and as low as three percent. This past May it was 7%. The Coalition believes that moving the election date to November there would be greater voter participation, ensuring more residents have a voice in deci-sions impacting Buffalo schools, students and families.

Understanding Impeachment and How It Works…

(On Tuesday House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, a dramatic and historic move that comes as the President faces outrage over reports that he pressured a foreign leader in an effort to target a political rival – Joe Biden. The announcement comes just over a year before the presidential election.) ere is a look at what impeachment is and why it doesn’t necessarily mean removal from office.

How does impeachment work?

Impeachment was established by the framers of the Constitution as a way to accuse a president of a crime and to hold a trial to determine if he is guilty of that crime. The Constitution permits Congress to remove presidents before their term is up if enough lawmakers vote to say that they committed “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.” However what exactly constitutes high crimes and misdemeanors is not defined in the Constitution, making impeachment on that basis more difficult.

By design, it is not easy to get rid of a president.

Impeachment trials have been held only twice in the country’s history -- for President Andrew Johnson in 1868 and for President Bill Clinton in 1998 and 1999 -- and both ended in acquittals: meaning the presidents were impeached by the House, but not convicted and removed from office by the Senate. One vote kept Johnson from being convicted of firing the secretary of war in 1868, which went against a tenure .In 1999, the Senate was 22 votes shy of convicting Clinton of perjury and obstruction of justice stemming from a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against him by Paula Jones. Richard M. Nixon in 1974, resigned to avoid being impeached.

President Trump Here are the steps in the process for impeaching a president: •First, an impeachment resolution must be introduced by a member of the House of Representatives.

•The speaker of the House must then direct the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary (or a special committee) to hold a hearing on the resolution to decide whether to put the measure to a vote by the full chamber and when to hold such a vote.

•A simple majority of the Judiciary Committee must approve the resolution.

•If the Judiciary Committee approves the resolution, it moves to a full vote on the House floor.

•If a simple majority of the those present and voting in the House approve an article of impeachment, then the president is impeached.

•The procedure then moves to the Senate where a “trial” is held to determine if the president committed a crime. There is no set procedure for the trial. How it is conducted would be set by the Senate leadership.

•Members of the House serve as “managers” in the Senate trial. Managers serve a similar role as prosecutors do in a criminal trial, they present evidence during the procedure.

•The president would have counsel to represent him at the Senate process.

•The chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court presides over the trial.

•Senators listen to the evidence presented, including closing arguments from each side and retire to deliberate.

•Senators then reconvene and vote on whether the president is guilty or not guilty of the crimes he is accused of. It takes a two-thirds vote of the Senate to convict. If the president is found guilty, he is removed from office and the vice president is sworn-in as president.

The hearing in the Senate, along with a charge in the House that the president has committed a crime is not a legal one. No penalty, other than removal from office, is brought against a president in an impeachment hearing.

In order to ensure the statute was enforced, the 1850 law also placed control of individual cases in the hands of federal commissioners. These agents were paid more for returning a suspected slave than for freeing them, leading many to argue the law was biased in favor of Southern slaveholders. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was met with even more impassioned criticism and resistance than the earlier measure. States like Vermont and Wisconsin passed new measures intended to bypass and even nullify the law, and abolitionists redoubled their efforts to assist runaway slaves.The Underground Railroad reached its peak in the 1850s, with many enslaved Africans fleeing to Canada to escape U.S. jurisdiction. Resistance also occasionally boiled over into riots and revolts. In 1851 a mob of antislavery activists rushed a Boston courthouse and forcibly liberated an escaped enslaved African named Shadrach Minkins from federal custody. Similar rescues were later made in New York, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Repeal of the Fugitive Slave Acts Widespread opposition to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 saw the law become virtually unenforceable in certain Northern states, and by 1860 only around 330 formaly enslaved Africans had been success-

fully returned to their Southern masters.

The Attica Prison Rebellion

e remember and we will never forget. Every year in September, PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE TOO takes time to remember what is often described as “the bloodiest prison riot in United States history.” I don’t like using the word riot as it seems to describe something that is “disorganized” or “spur of the moment.” I prefer rebellion, revolt or uprising. These prisoners were organized and clear about their demands for better living conditions and political rights. For several months, they had used the so-called proper channels to make their grievances and demands known. They were ignored.

In the past, we have had guest speakers, some who were at Attica in 1971.

We have shown films, some documentaries and some Hollywood products. In 2011 we hosted a panel discussion at a local church. In the following year, a small group, members of PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE TOO and THE WESTERN NY PEACE CENTER, walked to Attica, concluding with a prayer vigil to remember the slain prisoners who were murdered by the State in this conflict. Last year Brother Lion Blyden was our guest speaker. He is the son of Herbert X Blyden. When Herbert X died in 1997, the New York Times described him as “... the jail-hardened, prison-educated civil rights activist who gave eloquent voice to 1,200 beleaguered inmates as their chief negotiator during the 1971 Attica prison uprising...” Lion’s presentation gave us a glimpse into what it was like being raised by someone so politically astute and attuned to prisoner justice advocacy.

On Monday, September 30, at our regular public monthly meeting, we’ll be showing a film about Attica, New York’s best known maximum security prison. Plan to attend this meeting. The Attica story is an important one. The film we are screening and the discussion afterwards are very likely to teach you something that you didn’t know before. How does what happened at Attica in 1971, connect with what’s happening in prisons today? Wake Up Everybody No Mo Sleepin'

Part 1of a 2-Part Commentary I once heard an elder declare that vigilance was the price of freedom. Of course, there are many more prices that we all must be willing to pay for freedom. Now I know that what he meant was that we have to pay attention.

When walking into a storm one should pay very close attention to everything that is going on around them, and not just what’s right in front of their faces. Oftentimes, elements can hit you from all sides, and behind you, and pull you into a whirlwind where you lose all direction. If you are not following the flow of the wind, the direction of the debris, the cloud formation in the sky, you will get lost in the storm. Storm trackers use special equipment to do all of these things in order to minimize damage and save lives.

In crisis, people’s natural instinct is to run for cover. That is good, but what we have found in the aftermath of crisis, tragedy and storms is that when people join together in harmonized, organized, collective effort, more lives are saved and less damage occurs.

Baba In this era of Trumpism, where racism, oppression, discrimination, and ENG all the brutalities of the state apparatus’ are intensified, it becomes more important than ever before in our lives, that we pay close attention and join with others to secure and maintain our mutual safety. And yes, we must pay close attention to everything that is said and done by Trump and everybody connected to him For example, knowing the history of law enforcement in America as having developed out of the plantation system where overseers and “slave catchers” were charged with making sure that enslaved Afrikans abided by and obeyed the rules and regulations of the plantation, makes it deeply offensive and ominous when you paid attention and heard the Chief Law enforcement officer of the United States, the Attorney General , Jeff Sessions, say that :“We must remember the anglo-American heritage of law enforcement in our country.” That was a battle cry to white racists who still exist in and most times control our police departments throughout America. He was reminding white racist America that at one time in America’s history racist white men controlled law enforcement in America. This is so, despite the fact that many brave, conscious and conscientious Black, White, Latino and Asian officers strive every day to make sure that their policing does not continue to reflect the racist and brutal past of slavery and plantation enforcement.

That statement made by Jeff Sessions, himself a southern racist with a history of discrimination and the manipulation of the law to enforce racist policies and agenda in Alabama, where he was a State Senator, issued a dog whistle to racists all over America to remember when White men controlled the country, they forfeited and devalued the humanity of Afrikan people, indigenous people and even their own women in the furtherance of their greed, lust for power and their collective insecurity of manhood that they have to live with despite all the trappings and illusions of power and wealth that they possess. Just like money can’t buy you love, money can’t buy you manhood neither!

Bills Hold on for 21 – 17 win over Bengals

The Bills offense is starting to jell with Josh Allen completing passes to John Brown, who seems to get open on every single play. The Bills defense continues to dominate with a shutout in the first half . Unfortunately Allen turns the ball over on a stupid pass that should have been thrown away. He must learn to get rid of ball and come back to the next play. Bills Offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll must start taking the game out of Josh Allen’s hands and allow the entire offense to make plays like Zay Jones and running the ball with Frank Gore and hopefully activating Marcus Murphy in time for next week’s game against Patriots.

The Bills Head Coach made a big mistake in not activating Marcus Murphy and using him as a featured back and receiver out of the backfield. Marcus is a veteran player who can also be your punt and kickoff returner. Bills offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll is too conservative . The Bills should have blown out the Bengals; winning the game by 10 points or more. But thanks to Dabol going to sleep at the wheel -third quarter mentality. The Bills must have more aggressive play calling, like deep down field passes, possibly some reverses and jet sweeps to name a few.

Bills offensive tackle Ty Neeske : “I could have tightened things up a bit today and fans here are outstanding giving us a real home field advantage. This is nothing like fans in Washington, who did not fill up the stadium, much more loudly like stadium full of our true fans. Whatever scheme is called I must go out and execute; we must stay focused.”

Nsekhe was excellent on sealing off the edge and allowing positive yardage on jet sweeps and center Mitch Morse and guard Cody Ford opened up holes for Frank Gore to run inside throughout the game. After injury to starting Guard Jon Feliciano the Bills moved Cody Ford over to guard position and inserted Ty Nsekhe at right tackle. The Bills best offensive line unit consists of Dion Dawkins left tackle, Quinton Spain, left guard, Mitch Morse, Center, Cody Ford, right guard, and Ty Neskhe right tackle. Hopefully Ty’s chronic knee will allow him to stay in the lineup and Mitch Morse can stay concussion free in order for this unit to jell together.

The Bills defense continues to dominate and forced key turnovers especially the game saving interception by Tre” Davious White, who had two interceptions - the first Bill since Micah Hyde had two against Atlanta in 2017. Bills safety Jordan Poyer forced a fumble and recovered it along with Micah Hyde who also forced a fumble and Matt Milano recovered the ball. Bills safeties have been very consistent and should be considered for Pro Bowl Honors. Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer are the heart and soul of the Bills defense. We can see why Head Coach Sean McDermott signed Micah Hyde as the Bills first free agent of his tenure to lead our defense and make the proper adjustments. It’s paying off to one of the best signings of his tenure in Buffalo.

Bengals right guard and former Buffalo Bill John Miller : “Coming back (to Buffalo) was like it’s the next game and we knew it was going to be a rowdy crowd.” We figured out how to attack their aggressive defense. Our offense had to get on the same page. We ran the ball much better in second half and executed our offense too late and now must study the film and prepare for Steelers next week.”

It’s the real deal next week as Tom Brady and the Patriots come to new ERA Field on Sunday.

I see Bills young and mistake prone QB Josh Allen making too many mistakes that our defense can’t recover from leading to a Patriots 24 – 17 win over Bills.
