Council Passes Resolution Urging City to Take Immediate Disciplinary Action Against Officers Involved in Daniel Prude Matter Police Chief Herriott-Sullivan has responded to Rochester City Council’s resolution urging the City Administration to take immediate disciplinary action against the RPD officers involved in the death of Daniel Prude. The Chief stated that RPD’s internal investigation into the Prude matter should be completed and that departmental charges, if any, would be filed in April. Chief Herriott-Sullivan also stated that she will be mandated to follow Civil Service rules regarding policies and procedures that are in place under the current collective bargaining agreement, with respect to the discipline of the involved officers. The resolution was drafted by Council in the wake of the Attorney General Office’s failure to indict any of the implicated officers. Eight of the nine current Councilmembers supported and signed the resolution, including Council President Loretta Scott, Vice President Willie Lightfoot, and Councilmembers Malik Evans, Mitch Gruber, LaShay Harris, Mary Lupien, Miguel Meléndez and Michael Patterson. The resolution was adopted at the March 16th Council meeting. Resolution 2021-10 states that the Council believes city residents have a right to see a conclusion to the matter and to see justice served, and further demands that the Administration and the Police Chief move forward immediately and expeditiously with disciplinary action against the officers involved in the Prude incident. The resolution goes on to state the Council recommends that termination of the officers be considered.

Local author and global resilience trainer advocate Duncan Kirkwood held a press conference at City Hall earlier this month to deliver a donation of 200 copies of his book, Rerouting: Resilience Tools and Tactics to Mayor Brown’s Summer Employment And Internship Program. Duncan described the book as “a road map for young people to develop the skills they need in order to be successful.” During Duncan’s military service he trained Soldiers to become more resilient to overcome Veteran suicide, now he trains young people to become more resilient and overcome setbacks. Rerouting has sold 1,800 copies since being published in March across all 50 states and 4 countries. Miller-Beaty announced her intention to run for Erie County Sheriff Tuesday after supporters collected more than 1,000 petition signatures on her behalf and asked her to reconsider running for the county’s top law-enforcement position . If successful she will become the first female to oversee the Erie County Sheriff's Department. “I am humbled by the support I’ve received from members of our community and I accept their call to action,” said Miller-Beaty. “We Kimberly L. Miller-Beaty deserve a Sheriff who understands that compassion, dignity, and respect are at the heart of law enforcement, not at odds with it. As Sheriff, I will ensure that policing is done in an equitable manner and that the Erie County Holding Center is a safe place where the dignity of every woman and man is respected.” Miller-Beaty served as the deputy commissioner of Operations and Homeland Security for the Buffalo Police Department, the second largest police department in NYS. She is presently the Director of Public Safety at Canisius College, her alma mater. Miller-Beaty emerged as a front-runner during the Erie County Democratic Committee endorsement process but she removed herself from consideration after party leadership made it clear they were moving in another direction, before the process was complete. “I cannot ignore the will of the electorate to have a full and fair democratic process. After decades of abuse and mismanagement, I understand how important it is for the community to decide who will be the county’s top law enforcement official. I will not let my supporters down and I look forward to the work of rebuilding our community together.” She will run in the June 22 primary election and is expected to receive the Working Families Party endorsement, ensuring her a ballot position in the November election as well.
The Buffalo Five: Is Justice Near?

ohn Walker and Darryl Boyd of the “Buffalo Five,” walked out of State Supreme Court on Monday cautiously optimistic that after decades of trying to prove their innocence in a 1976 murder, justice may finally be within reach. Although their wrongful murder indictment (Erie County $41-413) and conviction was not overturned as they had hoped, Justice Christopher Burns did order a court hear- From Left: Darryl Boyd,John Walker, John Walker Jr. ing which is expected to be scheduled in the very near future. “That’s further than we’ve gotten before,” said John of the opportunity to present their case before the courts. “I'm still a little tense because I was hoping it would get resolved today. I’m just going to have to be patient.” Bishop Darius Pridgen, who was present at Monday’s court session, said he was heartened to hear the judge order a new hearing. “I’m encouraged that this was not dismissed today and to see that they have a top tier, respected attorney (Paul Cambria, who is fighting their case. It was a positive sign. Hopefully by the judge not just dismissing it and walking away there’s still some light. These guys are not getting any younger. I feel they were wrongfully accused. And for the Judge to do what he did today, means a lot.” Darryl also saw positive indications. “I feel we’re moving forward…” he said outside the court room. Remembering Sharpsville and the Women's Role in Fighing to Abolish Apartheid South Africa's Racist Pass laws “Mass murder” was a reference to the infamous Sharpeville massacre when 7,000 men, women and children, peacefully protesting the pass law system, gathered near a police station in the Black township of Sharpevilleon March 21, 1960. Police opened fire killing sixtynine Africans and wounding 186. The majority of those killed in the massacre were shot in the back while trying to flee the police terror. Four years before the Sharpsville Massacre, in one of the largest demonstrations staged in South African history, twenty thousand women marched to the Union Buildings on August 9,1956 in protest against the pass law system as it impacted on Black African women; depriving African women of their basic right to live with their husbands and raise their children in stable family units. Despite arrests, the movement continued to grow in 1956 and 1957, including spreading to the rural areas. Passes deprived African women of their basic right to live with their husbands and raise their children in stable family units. By the end of 1958 over a million passes had been forced on to African women. That year, the passbook was extended to nurses. Almost 2,000 women were arrested in Sophiatown. in October, Continued Page 4

My Personal Experience With COVID-19

I had faithfully worn my masks, washed my hands, used hand sanitizer, participated in PPE Giveaways, and even worn latex gloves from time to time. Yet I still contracted COVID-19. I had to quarantine in my home for 10 days. I am well on the road to recovery at this point in time, but I wanted to share my COVID-19 experience with others who have not contracted the virus. Besides, there are still plenty of naysayers who are resistant to wearing masks, and respecting social distancing guidelines. There are plenty of reckless folk who are literally playing haphazardly with their very lives.

I was fortunate to have only contracted a relatively mild version of the COVID-19 Virus, yet I was still very sick. I have never been so sick in my life, in fact. Each and every day, and every night, for those 10 days I was ill, I prayed to God that I would not have to enter into the hospital. I lost my appetite, and my sense of taste. Everything, and I mean every kind of food I tried to eat for 10 days, tasted like it was doused in Morton's salt. Even the air I breathed smelled bad. I also had a consistent fever, and I had to take my temperature incessantly. I feared that I would have to enter the hospital if my temperature reached 100 degrees. I have never been so miserable, in my entire life. The COVID-19 Virus eventually ran its course, but to help me during my recovery I ended up having to take Alka Seltzer Plus Severe Cold And Flu, and Extra Strength Tylenol: Adult. At present, I have been disinfecting my home, in hopes that the COVID-19 Virus is eradicated from my place of residence permanently. The air I breathe smells good, again. In April, I will be taking the COVID-19 vaccination. I hope this means I will not contract COVID-19, again. I urge my fellow community members to do likewise.

BUFFALO 5 continued from page 3 -1976John Walker, Darryl Boyd, Darryn Gibson, and Floyd Martin were indicted during 1976 and 1977 for the robbery and beating death of William Crawford, a White senior citizen who resided on Fillmore Avenue across from the Golden Nuggett Inn and Restaurant. The four young men of The Buffalo 5 have long proclaimed that they were and are innocent of the crime. However, a fifth friend of theirs, Tyrone Woodruff, turned State's Evidence back in 1976, and was the State Of New York's leading witness against the remainder of The Buffalo 5. Woodruff was never charged for the crime, although he (falsely) admitted to having participated in and helped to commit the crime. Woodruff has since recanted his admission and allegations on three separate occasions, to no avail. -2021John Walker, Darryl Boyd, and Tyrone Woodruff are the last three surviving members of The Buffalo 5. Floyd Martin and Darryn Gibson are now deceased. John and Darryl have maintained their innocence throughout their decades-long ordeal. John spent 22 years in prison and 18 years on lifetime parole. Darryl spent 28 years in prison and remains on lifetime parole. . They’re counting on new evidence in the case to vindicate them - a photo of the crime scene before it was disturbed that showed only one set of footprints leading to and from the scene. The photo was used by Martin's attorney to get him acquitted. He was the only one whose family could afford a private lawyer. That lawyer was James McLeod who went on to become a highly respected City Court Judge. The others had public defenders - who either had little or no knowledge of criminal law or just didn’t care. Former justice McLeod will testify about the photos in the upcoming hearing, where witnesses will be allowed. ..The DA says there is no such photo. The transcripts from

Mistrust of medical experts or therapies has existed for many years, caused by unequal access to care and documented instances of unethical, exploitive medical research. With the Tuskegee experiments that began in the 1930s and continued for 40 years. The individuals and organizations behind the COVID-19 vaccines have taken many steps to ensure that Black and Hispanic individuals and others from minority or underserved communities participated in all stages of the creation and testing of these vaccines. One of the leading scientists involved in developing the Moderna vaccine, for example, is Dr. Kizzmekia “Kizzy” Corbett, a young Black immunologist from the National Institutes of Health. She was integral to the research and trials of the vaccine and has spoken openly about its safety, efficacy and her trust in the process that resulted in the vaccine. A Latina professional, Nanette Cocero, oversaw the development and rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine in her role as Global President of Vaccines at Pfizer. More than 2,000 people of color were included in the clinical trials of these vaccines, ensuring that the results would be relevant for a diverse population. -Let’s start to heal: Caring for your community COVID-19 has hit the Black and Hispanic/Latinx communities particularly hard: Data collected by the CDC on COVID-19 cases shows that more than 2 million Hispanic/Latinx people have been infected by COVID, in addition to 1.2 million Black people. Some 37,000 Black Americans have died from the disease, as have 31,000 in the Hispanic/Latinx community. Black and Hispanic/Latinx individuals represent 33% of all illnesses and 28% of all deaths from COVID-19. Based on information from the clinical trials, only 5% pf people who received either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine later became infected with COVID-19, making both vaccines 95% effective in protecting you against the virus. The people who later tested positive for COVID-19 had a less severe case of the virus, compared with unvaccinated people. If you still have concerns or questions about the vaccine, the best thing to do is talk to your doctor or clinician. Speak to someone you trust in your community. The most effective way to protect your family and your community is to get the vaccine and help get us to reach the 70% vaccination rate the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says is needed before we can take off our masks and gather together again like we did before last year. John Walker and Darryl Boyd are innocent men. They are not murderers. All they want is to clear their names not only for themselves, but for the sake of their children. r. and Mrs. William Salter, Sr. of Buffalo celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary on March 5, 2021, postponed from 2020. A Surprise dinner was held at The Classic V, Amherst, NY with family and friends given by their Daughters, Dr. Cassandra L. Salter-Smith and Candace L. Works. William Salter, Sr., and Christine Haskell were married March 5, 1960, in Otterbein Evangelical United Brethren Church in Buffalo, NY. Mr. Salter is retired from the Buffalo Sewer Authority; and Mrs. Salter is a retired Supervisor from Highland Glen Manufacturing. The couple have five children (three preceded in death), 12 Grandchildren, 12 Great-Grandchildren, three Great-Great Grandchildren, and three Great-Great-Great Grandchildren. They have countless relatives and friends. To God be the Glory!

A Women's History Month Tribute To My Amazing Wife, Wonda Core I want to celebrate National Women's History Month by highlighting my amazing wife, Wonda Core. Wonda has served in true humility in all her tasks. She is a true servant of the Lord who heralds the Word of God with clarity and accuracy. As a life coach and mentor to young and aged women, she births them into their kingdom position. The premiere gala in honor of Women’s History Month, had to be cancelled last year due to the COVID pandemic.The new date has now been set for Saturday October 16, 2021 at 7 p.m. at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. The theme for this royal affair is “Celebrating Women Touching the World.” Leah Daniel, Yvonne Evans, Laura Smith, Dr. Jamie Smith, Theresa E. Pope and Regina Calhoun are the general chairpersons. The purpose of this annual awards dinner is to celebrate National Women’s History Month with the recognition of women and to spotlight their achievement, community service, professionalism, and exemplary leadership. Honorees will

Trini Ross of Buffalo Nominated to Serve as First Black Female US Attorney for the Western District
T
rini Ross of Buffalo has been recommended by U.S. Senator Charales Schumer to serve as the United States Attorney for the Western District of New York. Ross, Buffalo born and raised, would be the first African American woman to hold the position. She currently serves in the National Science Foundation Office of Inspector General as Director of the Office of Investigations, Legal Division. In this role, which she has held since 2018, she manages attorney-investigations, directs oversight of investigations, and oversees outreach. “Trini Ross is a true Western New Yorker…who has deep roots in the community and broad support,” said Schumer. “ Ms. Ross served in an exemplary way for a number of year in the Western New York United States Attorney office as well as at top positions at Department of Justice headquarters in DC. Everything in her career has prepared and guided her to assume this leadership role and I look forward to seeing her take the helm.” Attorney Ross, a 1992 graduate of SUNY Buffalo Law School, was part of an historic trio of recommendations by Schumer which saw three African Americas recommended to lead New York U.S. Attorney offices for the Southern, Eastern & Western Districts of New York.

Latonya Close, formerly of Buffalo, both a Riverside High School graduate (l988) and University of Buffalo (1993) , has been named Charlotte –Mecklenburg Schools Teacher of the Year in Charlotte, North Carolina. Latonya is an exceptional education teacher at Newell Elementary School, Charlotte. She is the recipient of the 2017 MeckEd Teacher of Excellence Paul Jackson award and has a wealth of experience in both careers as a teacher and varied specialist. She is the niece of Rhonda Butler of Buffalo and the mother of Jerica Pope in Glen Burnie, Maryland.

UJIMA COMPANY Inc., Presents BIOP-SEE A One Act Play of a Woman's Solo Journey Through Lupus Diagnosis

F
or three nights only, March 26, 27 at 8p.m. and March 28 at 6p.m. Ujima Co. inc. brings to the virtual stage a live stream of their latest stage play Biop-See. Written by tatiana de la tierra, Biop-See is an autobiographical one-act play depicting a woman’s solo journey through her diagnosis of lupus. As an outspoken latina activist and lesbian writer, tatiana holds back no truth when sifting through the layers of her life, while it flashes before her eyes. Her emotions and thoughts l/r playwrite Tatiana de la Tierra, director Sara Norat-Phillips, actress Hilda (Millie) Ramos are explored and expressed through memories, allegorical poems, and multiple “girl talks” with herself. Although ultimately it is a truth that is hard to face, Biop-see shares the struggle and acceptance of a woman grasping for joy while facing her end of life. “We found the script for Biop-see while sifting through files of plays Lorna had considered, as we searched for one-acts Ujima could successfully produce in a virtual world,” said Sarah NoratPhillips, a founding member of Ujima Company who returns to Buffalo to direct this production after twenty years working in Detroit. She continued, “Many of us came to know tatiana when she lived and worked in Buffalo during the late 90’s. She was a force of nature and in this oneact she uses her gift with words to reveal her joy, her hope, her rage and her pain, as she grapples with the debilitating illness that ultimately took her life at an early age.” Insiders are saying the performance by local dancer, actress, educator, Hilda “Millie” Ramos is not to be missed! The 2nd Annual Black Doll Exhibit meets the goal for positive reinforcement of beauty and brains in women of color. The Buffalo Public Library’s Central Branch is adorned with dolls throughout its first floor until March 27th. The area known as the Ring of Knowledge showcases dolls that influence career consciousness in little girls. This display promotes professional achievements. What an excellent way to teach young girls to embrace their beauty as well as their ability to strive for excellence! The vision behind the display was influenced by local community leaders, the fight to have a seat at the table, and strong, beautiful, successful women across the
globe. A true celebration of Women’s History Month The Career Consciousness/ Black Excellence showcase contains dolls from the Barbie Inspiring Women series

O
llie D. Harris, a dietitian and co-founder of EGO Studios, died March 2 in Dallas. She was 85. Born Ollie D. Blowe in Emporia, Va., she moved to Buffalo as a child in 1942 and attended Buffalo schools. In 1954 she became one of the first Black graduates of Erie County Technical Institute, State University of New York. In 1955, she married Phelix Harris at St. John Baptist Church in Buffalo. Mrs. Harris then worked for a decade as a dietitian at various Buffalo hospitals, including Chronic Disease Research Institute, and Roswell Park Cancer Center.

Phelix Jr. (Shelia), Tyrone Eric, and Allen DeWane; a sister in law, Tommie Mae Hunter; and two grandchildren. A service was held March 15 in Thomas T. Edwards Funeral Home, 995 Genesee Street.

National/World Garvey Bust to be Placed at African Union HQ in Ethiopia
Toronto, Canada - A bronze sculpture honoring Marcus Mosiah Garvey is to be completed, delivered and installed at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by August 17, 2021, the 134th birthday of Garvey, who along with Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and others, are hailed as fathers of Pan-Africanism, the global movement for solidarity and success of people of African descent. Garvey, who called for a United States of Africa in the 1920s and went on to create the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA & ACL), continues to inspire subsequent leaders. -CaraibNews

$27 Million Settlement in Floyd Death is Historic
The City of Minneapolis $27 million settlement of a civil lawsuit against the City of Minneapolis and the four officers involved in George Floyd’s death is the largest pre-trial settlement in a civil rights’ wrongful death case in U.S. history. It includes $500,000 to be directed to enhance the 38th St. & Chicago Ave. business district where George Floyd died. “That’s the largest pre-trial settlement in a wrongful death case ever would be for the life of a Black man sends a powerful message that Black lives do matter and police brutality against people of color must end,” said Civil rights Attorney Benjamin Crump.

The State of Our Local Election
W
ith petitioning underway for hopeful candidates, many might wonder what the election scene could look like after last year’s gruesome and exhausting cycle, between the presidential election, the crucial Georgia senate run-off, and the retaliatory insurrection at the Capitol that followed. Most New Yorkers have expressed the dire need for change in the state, and in Buffalo we could not agree more. But after the chaos, what type of hope is there for candidates looking to hold office for the first time. Most of our city residents are still struggling with the effects of the pandemic. Our businesses and livelihood are still cast in a dark shadow, one year later. The long-term health effects of not only COVID-19, but people’s overall anxiety of the state of the country will be felt long after the pandemic is declared over. On top of that, voter restrictions are being put into place across the country at an alarming rate. Many of our elected officials having done the bare minimum to ease our fears as a community. It is only right that we, the people, continue to fight for our voice in the election process. We can no longer wait and see or accept the status quo. For too long we have been underfunded and underappreciated as tax-paying members of society. When elected officials’ campaign on one platform, underdeliver on their promises once in office, and then expect to garner the same votes that got them there, they lose the public’s trust. We must demand more from them and find new voices who will champion the people who they represent. We will always have a vote. We need to make sure those votes are felt in their offices and legislation every day that they are in office. It starts by getting involved in this upcoming election. Getting the necessary information to make an informed decision. Early voting starts June 12 through June 20, and Election Day is June 22. We need to stay active. We must #VoteLocal.

Black Girl Magic is Rocking in Buffalo We are at the end of March's 2021 Women 's History Month and what a month it has been for a notable group of Buffalo's Black, female movers and shakers! From the political landscape to the education field and cultural events, African American women in Buffalo are pushing hard against and shattering that formerly, impenetrable glass ceiling that, because of race and gender, was twice as hard for Black women to breech. Danise Wilson, a community activist and block club leader was elected the chairwoman of SUNYErie Board of Trustees , formerly known as Erie Community College. Another mover and shaker, 2nd District Legislator, April Baskin, was re-elected Chairwoman of the Erie County Legislature for her 3rd consecutive term. Tiffany Lewis, the dynamic founder of Confidant Girl Mentoring Group, was elected or appointed to lead the Erie County Commission on the Status of Women. In the political arena, two young, energetic females, India Walton and LeCandice Durham, have placed their names into the pot for the city's top job as Mayor of Buffalo. Another bright, young, rising star, Dominique Calhoun is trying to be elected Erie County's 1st District Legislator. And, speaking of Erie County, the race that all seem to be watching is the sheriff's race. As of this writing, it seems that Kimberly Lynn Beaty has decided to stay in the race. After a few missteps on her part and a load of misinformation put forth by Erie County Democratic Committee, it appears that Beaty will go on to vie for the title of the first Black and female sheriff of Erie County. With the holding center's minority population exceeding 75% and with at least 31 deaths under the current sheriff's tenure, a candidate such as Ms. Beaty, with her more than 36 years in law enforcement will be a positive improvement for that place. With the Buffalo Common Council still maintaining its all male dominance, a female face on the 2nd floor of City Hall and another atop the county sheriff's patrol horse, may prove to be a welcoming change.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Prison reform advocates rallied outside Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Manhattan offices and the executive mansion in Albany Sunday, to demand he sign the Humane Alternatives to Long-Term Solitary Confinement Act (HALT Act) into law. Prolonged solitary confinement has long been classified by as torture, but holding prisoners in extreme isolation for weeks, months and even years has been common in New York prisons. The Senate Democratic Majority recently passed the Humane Alternatives to Long-Term Solitary Confinement Act (HALT). Sponsored by Senator Julia Salazar, this legislation limits the use of segregated confinement for all incarcerated persons to 15 days, implements alternative rehabilitative measures, including the creation of Residential Rehabilitation Units (RRU), expands the definition of segregated confinement, and eliminates the use of segregated confinement for vulnerable incarcerated populations. Additionally, this bill establishes guidelines for humane conditions in segregated confinement, outlines reporting requirements, and adds due process protections by prohibiting placement in segre-
gated confinement prior to a disciplinary hearing and by allowing access to counsel. The Nelson Mandela Rules, adopted by the United Nations, define segregated confinement for more than 15 days as torture. HALT will bring New York in compliance with this international standard and save the State tens of millions of dollars over the next several years. “ This legislation is another major step in the Senate Democratic Majority’s commitment to reforming New York’s justice system. I applaud Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and our lead Senate sponsor and champion Julia Salazar, as well as her staff. It is now up to the Governor to sign HALT into law and forever change the punishment paradigm, moving away from torture and toward treatment – a win for all New Yorkers.”

The North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters (NASRCC) announced the Sisters in the Brotherhood program will be holding the second of three virtual information sessions for women who are interested in pursuing a career in carpentry. Held on the second Mondays with remaining dates in April, and May, these info sessions provide an opportunity for participants to learn about the 4-week preapprentice program that will run in July at carpenter’s training centers across New York State.
