•Recently a bill was passed in Congress, releasing $8.3 US dollars.

NYS would see closely to $750M monthly to help with several emergency items including Paid Family Medical Leave for displaced workers or those caring for individuals with the COVID-19.

•Governor Cuomo has suspended several requirements that relate to Human Services. Let me share some of those changes with you now: 1. Public Assistance: We will move to phone interviews for Public Assistance eligibility determinations. This includes applications for Emergency Assistance and Temporary Housing Assistance. Contact us at 753-6960. Applicants can drop off, mail, fax at 585-753-5315 or email dfa2a26. sm.monroe.C.D.M@dfa.state.ny.us new Temporary Assistance (2921) applications to the Agency.

2. Other Relate Public Assistance: We will also be suspending other non-essential appointments, and Work Experience Program orientations for 60 days. Recipients participating in assigned activities are encouraged to continue to participate if the site remains open and available, however, absences related to illness, isolation or quarantine will be considered excused and will not result in negative action. Recipients in substance use treatment as a condition of eligibility for public assistance should look to their treatment provider for guidance regarding the protocols for attendance/absences during this emergency period.

3. Home Energy Replacement or Repair and HEAP These programs have also been suspended. Individuals applying for these programs should provide their application and will be contacted for a phone interview. “Our number one goal is to keep our residents as safe and healthy as possible,” said Mayor Warren. “The only way to do that is to minimize the spread of germs. By following the recommendations put forth by the CDC, we can each play an important role in sanitizing our living spaces and slowing down the dissemination of the virus.”

In an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19, Mayor Lovely A. Warren is urging all residents to follow specific guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces that could potentially carry the virus.

According to the CDC, all diluted household bleach solutions and alcohol solutions that contain at least 70 percent alcohol, as well as most common EPA-registered household disinfectants, should be effective against COVID-19 for disinfection purposes.

The CDC also warns that household bleach should NEVER be mixed with ammonia or with any other cleanser.

The CDC recommends the following actions be taken to help eliminate the spread of COVID-19: 1. Wear disposable gloves when cleaning and disinfecting surfaces. Gloves should be discarded after each cleaning. If reusable gloves are used, those gloves should be dedicated for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces solely for COVID-19 and should not be used for other purposes. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and disinfection products used.

Clean hands immediately after gloves are removed.

2. If surfaces are dirty, they should be cleaned using a detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.

3. Diluted household bleach solutions can be used if appropriate for the surface. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for application and proper ventilation. Check to ensure the product is not past its expiration date. Unexpired household bleach will be effective against coronaviruses when properly diluted.

• Prepare a bleach solution by mixing 5 tablespoons (1/3 cup) bleach per gallon of water or 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water.

4. For soft (porous) surfaces such as carpeted floor, rugs, and drapes, remove visible contamination if present and clean with appropriate cleaners indicated for use on these surfaces.

5. After cleaning, launder items as appropriate in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. If possible, launder items using the warmest appropriate water setting for the items and dry items completely.

AREA BRIEFS Columnist Presented with Honorable Degree from the Community On Saturday, February 29, at the close of the 41st anniversary celebration of the Eye On History Column, several people presented Columnist Eva M. Doyle with an "Honorary Doctorate Degree" from the community. The following individuals walked into the Merriweather Library with the Doctoral Degree robe, scarf, and hat. They included: former Common Council members Charley H. Fisher, III, Elder Clifford Bell who is now Eva Doyle 90 years old, Retired Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant, Patrick Freeman, the Mighty Oba, Allie Freeman, mother of Mr. Freeman, and Frank E. Merriweather, III, Public Relations director of the Criterion.

"This was a complete surprise," said Dr. Doyle. "It was a tremendous honor from these distinguished leaders of our community. I am thankful and blessed."

Wegmans, Tops Shorten Hours Wegmans and Tops have shorten store hours in the face of COVID-19: Starting Wednesday, all Tops stores will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Wegmans will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Malls Cut Store Hours Local malls and stores have cut their hours in the wake of the recent health crisis.

•Walden Galleria is now open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Additionally, some 40 stores have announced temporary closures.

•Eastern Hills Mall is open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

•At press time Boulevard Mall had not finalized its new shortened hours.

Shoppers are advised to call ahead to the stores they plan to visit, to make sure they will be open.

Mayor Byron W. Brown Announces Important Updates to Buffalo’s Response to COVID-19

ayor Byron Brown released the following update on March 17: The City of Buffalo is working to ensure public safety and prioritize the health and welfare of residents and visitors.

We are doing our part to continue to reduce the potential circles of exposure to COVID-19 in our community. The following list indicates the latest updates and changes to City of Buffalo government operations that affect the public, effective March 17, 2020.

At this time, there are 1,374 confirmed Coronavirus cases in New York State, 12 deaths statewide and 11 diagnosed in Erie County, 4 of which are in Buffalo.

All municipal buildings, including City Hall, remain closed to the general public; despite interest and late fee payments being suspended, City Hall bill payments remain operational.

WITH REGARD TO PARKING: Alternate side parking will no longer apply to streets with 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. restrictions, but will remain in effect for 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. restricted streets to allow for emergency personnel.

Black Press of America Celebrates 193 Years .

Monday, March 16, 2020 marked the 193rd anniversary of the Black Press of America, whose global impact remains undeniable. It all began with Freedom’s Journal, the first African American newspaper, that was guided by the fearless publishers, John B. Russwurm and Samuel E. Cornish.

On March 16, 1827, Russwurm and Cornish announced the publication’s inaugural issue with a frontpage that contained these words: “We wish to plead our own cause. Too long have others spoken for us.”

The 4-page edition included stories about the struggle to end the horrors of slavery, lynching, and social injustice. It also informed the African American community of international news of particular interest, like events in Haiti and Sierra Leone. Coronavirus: Jamaica Declared a 'Disaster Area'

African Countries with Confirmed Coronavirus Cases Lagos, Nigeria - As coronavirus spreads across the globe, countries in Africa are taking preventive measures to keep the disease out and many are showing a strong level of preparedness to counter its spread.

There are now more than 100 cases recorded in 11 countries in Africa, according to the latest figures from the World Health Organization.

Egypt: Egypt remains the nation with the most reported cases with 59, more than half of all confirmed cases on the continent.Most of the cases in Egypt are among passengers and crew members aboard a Nile cruise ship coming from southern city of Aswan to Luxor.

Ghana:Ghana has barred entry for all travelers, except Ghanaian citizens and permanent residents, who have visited a country with at least 200 recorded cases of Covid-19 in the last 14 days, effective on March 17. There will be a mandatory 14-day self-quarantine for anyone entering the country, according to a travel advisory from the government.

Any traveler showing symptoms of the coronavirus will be quarantined and tested upon arriving.

Kenya: On March 15, the Kenyan government announced the suspension of all travelers from countries that have reported Covid-19 cases. Only Kenyan citizens will be allowed into the country “with self quarantine or governmentdesignated facility,” officials said on Twitter. The measure is in place for 30 days.

Morocco: As of March 15, the Moroccan government has suspended all flights to Algeria, Belgium, China, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain, as well as passenger ferry services Namibia:On March 14, the Namibian government announced that it would be suspending inbound and outbound flights from Qatar, Ethiopia and Germany for 30 days.

South Africa: On March 15, President Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster and announced that all travelers who have entered South Africa from high-risk countries since mid-February will be required to present themselves for testing.

South Korea’s Drive-thru Testing Fast, Free and Effective

The test takes 10 minutes at most. Results are texted to you, usually the next day. And it's free — paid for by the government. Drive-through centers have helped South Korea do some of the fastest, most-extensive testing of any country. And while nobody is claiming that South Korea has defeated the outbreak, experts credit the emphasis on testing with reducing case numbers and fatalities.

South Korea has about 8,000 infections. Italy and Iran overtook it this week as the countries with the most cases outside of China. South Korea's new cases have gradually declined since the end of last month. For the first time since Jan. 20, the number of patients released from treatment on Friday, March 13 — 510 — outnumbered the 110 new cases.

A nation of 51 million, South Korea has tested about 250,000 people since its outbreak began on Jan. 20, with a daily capacity of 15,000. It has conducted 3,600 tests per million people compared to five per million in the U.S. South Korea's aggressive testing may make it unnecessary to impose the sort of lockdowns to which China and Italy have resorted, although health officials insist that all options remain on the table.

Caronavirus Middle East Report BEIRUT — The Middle East is shutting down as the novel coronavirus accelerates its spread. Prayers are being canceled, bars and cafes closed, flights grounded, and festivals and pilgrimages called off. The al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, and the Shiite Muslim shrine in Karbala, Iraq, are among the great religious sites that have been closed.

Roswell Park Will Serve as COVID-19 Laboratory Testing Site Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday that six medical facilities state-wide will do rapid laboratory testing for COVID-19 or coronavirus. One of those facilities is Roswell Park Compre-hensive Cancer Center. During a news conference on Sunday, Dr. Johnson said the hospital was chosen by New York State because of its expertise in pathology, specifically in the area of test-ing for virus-based diseases.

United Coalition of Churches & Brotherhood Update The United Coalition of Churches & Brotherhood (U.C.C.B.) will be holding our monthly fellowship breakfast next Saturday March 21, 2020 at Elim Christian Fellowship Church beginning at 12noon-2pm located at 70 Chalmers ave. We will start at noon due to a scheduling conflict, but we will be there as there is much to talk about. New developments in the ongoing NFTA discrimination cases and Sinclair Fabor will provide an update along with Jeff Richardson. Our spring campaign with the selling of the knives to our youth by some of the corner stores has began as there was a stabbing around the bailey area and one of those knives were used in the assault. We must ban together and visit these stores and ask them to please stop selling these weapons to our youth! It sends a mixed signal as we are trying to stop the violence that they are promoting just to make a dollar at the expense of our youth killing each other! We will collaborate with the Peacemakers, Snug, Fathers and the Stop The Violence organizations to make a statement so they will hear our voices of concern as we are tired of hearing our Mothers crying who have lost a son/daughter to violence! Pastor James Giles will make a presentation on groups joining together to fight for policy changes as they have blocked the tools to help investigate where the guns are coming from and from whom! And we will have a spokesman to talk about the Coronavirus Pandemic as well. We invite our communities to join us. Tips for older Adults The CDC says "older adults" and people with severe chronic illness are more likely to become severely ill from COVID-19.

To safeguard seniors from COVID-19, experts at the CDC are now recommending stronger precautions for those ages 60 and older.

They should watch for these early warning signs that something may be wrong.

COVID-19 symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath. Call your doctor if you start to develop any of these symptoms.

•Seek emergency help immediately if you: •Have difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.

•Persistent pain or pressure in the chest.

•New confusion or difficulty waking up.

•Bluish lips or face.

This list is not all-inclusive. Consult a medical provider with any severe or concerning symptoms.

If you have other symptoms of an infection or are feeling poorly, it is better to get checked out even if you don’t have a fever.

13th Annual Awards Dinner “Celebrating Women Touching the World” Postponed The 13th annual awards dinner, Unlimited Possibilities Overcoming Poverty Ministry Inc. has been postponed due to the Coronavirus health crisis. Idris Elba Tests Positive For Coronavirus, Urges Public To Take Precaution

I

dris Elba is the latest high-profile celebrity to announce that they have contracted the coronavirus.

The 47-year-old actor made the announcement in a video that he posted on Twitter on Monday. “This morning I tested positive for Covid 19,” he wrote in the tweet. “I feel ok, I have no symptoms so far but have been isolated since I found out about my possible exposure to the virus. Stay home people and be pragmatic. I will keep you updated on how I’m doing.”

Despite feeling fine, he revealed that he took the test as a precautionary measure after discovering that he was exposed to someone who tested positive for the virus. “I found out last Friday they tested positive and quarantined myself immediately and got the results back today,” said The Wire star. He continued, “We’ve told our families, they are very supportive,” he said. “We’ve told our colleagues and, you know, transparency is probably the best thing for this right now.”

He also told fans to take the pandemic seriously by practicing social distancing and diligently washing their hands.

At the end of the video, he called for solidarity. “Look we live in a divided world right now…but now is a time for solidarity. Now is a time for thinking about each other. There are so many people whose lives have been affected.”

I n addition to Elba, a number of other celebrities have revealed that they’ve tested positive, including Utah Jazz players Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell, four Brooklyn Nets Plaers Including Kevin Durrant, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, and Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson.

Casinos Closed, Some Funerals Even Prohibited Under Order Issued by Gov. Cuomo Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an order that forbids all gatherings that might bring together more than 50 people, even funerals, are temporarily prohibited in the State of New York as a result of an order issued by Gov. Fadia Patterson To Receive Excellence in Television News Award

N

ews Reporter Fadia Patterson will be honored at Medaille College’s 15th Annual Media Awards. The e “Fadia was selected as a team member of Spectrum News winning the Excellence in Television Broadcasting Award because of her focus on community, ethics and commitment to Western New York,” said Medaille College Associate Professor and awards founder, Lou Pozantides.

This year marks Ms. Patterson’s 10th year in the industry. She got her start at a bilingual TV station in South Florida.

Since then she has made stops in Indiana, Tennessee and Kentucky before coming to Buffalo, New York.

Along the way the award-winning journalist has continued to be engaged in her community. Patterson is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and was recently elected to the executive board of Buffalo Association of Black Journalists. BABJ is the local chapter of NABJ – an organization which gave Patterson her start in the industry.

“Since moving to Buffalo, she [Fadia] has immersed herself in the community, serving and informing the public on multiple platforms, on a variety of stories,” said NABJ Region III Director and Cleveland 19 News Anchor, Sia Nyorkor. “I’ve had the pleasure of watching her grow and hone her craft over the years and I would expect nothing less. No one is more deserving of this honor!”

round the world, the official coronavirus count continues to climb. Cases as of March 18 topped 197,000 globally .

At press time there were 20 confirmed cases in Erie County. And this morning Rochester, in Monroe County, announced the first upstate death related to COVID-19.

Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, which has rapidly spread across the United States in a matter of weeks, have now been reported in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

West Virginia became the last state to confirm its first case Tuesday. At least 100 people infected with the virus have died in the U.S. — a toll that experts expect to rise quickly.

What's In A Name?

Coronaviruses are named for the spikes that protrude from their surfaces, resembling a crown or the sun’s corona. They can infect both animals and people, and can cause illnesses of the respiratory tract.

These days, “coronavirus” is often prefaced with the word “novel,” because that’s precisely what it is: a new strain in a family of viruses we’ve all seen before — and, in some form, had.

It is also known as COVID-19. In choosing the COVID-19 name, The World Health Organization (WHO) advisers focused simply on the type of virus that causes the disease. Co and Vi come from coronavirus, with D meaning disease and 19 standing for 2019, the year the first cases were seen.

-A Family of Viruses According to the WHO, coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that range from the common cold to much more serious diseases. These diseases can infect both humans and animals.

At least four types of coronaviruses cause very mild infections every year, like the common cold. Most people get infected with one or more of these viruses at some point in their lives, according to The New York Times.

Another coronavirus that circulated in China in 2003 caused a more dangerous condition known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS. The virus was contained after it had sickened 8,098 people and killed 774, noted the Times.

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS, first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012, is also caused by a coronavirus The new virus has been named SARS-CoV-2. The disease it causes is called Covid-19.

-What are the symptoms to look out for with Covid-19?Symptoms, which can take between two to 14 days to appear, include fever, a dry cough, fatigue and difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. Milder cases may resemble the flu or a bad cold, but people may be able to pass on the virus even before they develop symptoms.

Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs.

Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.

Much remains unknown about the virus, including how many people may have very mild or asymptomatic infections, and whether they can transmit the virus. The precise dimensions of the outbreak are hard to know.

How long will it take to develop a treatment or vaccine?

Several drugs are being tested, and some initial findings are expected soon. A vaccine to stop the spread is still at least a year away according to scientists.

-The Do's & Dont'sHere are some things that WILL help: •WASH YOUR HANDS.Wet your hands and scrub with soap, taking care to get between your fingers and under your nails. Wash for at least 20 seconds (or about the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice), and dry. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers, which should be rubbed in for about 20 seconds, can also work, but the gel must contain at least 60 percent alcohol.

•The C.D.C. also recommends you avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands • Practice social distancing. Social distancing is a term referring to the conscious effort of reducing close contact between people. The 6-feet separation recommendation is made in an effort to prevent the transmission of the virus. It's important to note that social distancing is recommended regardless of whether you fall under COVID-19's most at risk-patients (the elderly 60+, the immunocompromised, and people with chronic respiratory issues, such as asthma)

9 Also, clean “high-touch” surfaces, like phones, tablets and handles. Apple recommends using 70 percent isopropyl alcohol, wiping gently. “Don’t use bleach,” the company said.

•To disinfect any surface, the C.D.C. recommends wearing disposable globes and washing hands thoroughly immediately after removing the gloves.

•If you feel sick, stay home •Stay informed •Stock up on groceries, medicine and resources •Be sensitive to others. This is anxiety-provoking, uncharted territory for everybody.

And some things that simply WON'T help: •Don't put yourself in heavily populated, crowded, positions unnecessarily (i.e. restaurants, bars, public transportation) •Don't panic. Stress can lower your immune system and that's not helping anyone!

-How do I keep myself and others safe?Washing your hands frequently is the most important thing you can do, along with staying at home when you’re sick and avoiding touching your face.

-How contagious is the virus?It seems to spread very easily from person to person, especially in homes, hospitals and other confined spaces. The pathogen can travel through the air, enveloped in tiny respiratory droplets that are produced when a sick person breathes, talks, coughs or sneezes.

-Debunking The MythThe myth that Black people cannot get the Coronavirus or COVID-19 is the furthest thing from the truth. (see also page 11 “Race-Based Coronavirus Misinformation.”)

African Americans already face disproportionate health issues when compared to Whites. Our community is already at risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses, which ultimately will make Blacks bigger targets for contracting and succumbing to the coronavirus. Comorbidity, or the simultaneous presence of two chronic diseases in one person, also makes it doubly hard to treat the virus. It’s for that reason Dr. Stephanie MilesRichardson, associate dean, Graduate Education in Public Health at Morehouse School of Medicine says the emphasis for the Black community has to be on practicing preventative measures that are crucial for our survival.

We have tried this week to gather as much information that relates to this health crisis as possible in one place for our readers . Of particular importance is practicing the preventive steps to take to avoid the virus, if at all possible.

Albright-Knox Northland Temporarily Closed

Niagara Falls Mayor Robert M. Restaino declared a public health emergency in the city Sunday night, canceling board meetings that start after 5 p.m. So far, that doesn’t apply to City Council meetings, but the topic remains under discussion, Restaino said Monday.

After Monday’s nutrition program meals, the John Duke Senior Center and the LaSalle Senior Center will be closed until further notice. Starting Tuesday, the nutrition program also is suspended until further notice.

All city youth programs are canceled until further notice.

During daytime business hours, city offices are open for business, but the mayor said city employees should take appropriate health precautions.

Inmates Visits Temporarily Cancelled at Erie and Niagara Correctional Facilities

Law enforcement personnel have been briefed on the Coronavirus and what to look for and in case an inmate falls ill. The decision to cancel all contact visits to inmates has been described by officials as one of the measures being taken to stop the spread of COVID-19.

There will be free video visits made available two hours per week and an additional $10 will be added to inmates commissary accounts for an additional half hour of communication.

All programs from outside providers including the Chaplain program, inmate education and community service programs are also being suspended in Erie County Jails.

At press time Tuesday there had been no known reported cases of COVID-19 among inmates.

Corona Virus and the Failed American State

he United States has none of the systems or infrastructure that would allow it to accomplish what China has done to fight mass infection.

The only thing more frightening than the COVID-19 virus spreading around the world is the knowledge that this country is woefully unprepared to protect people from it. The response to the epidemic would be funny if it were not so dangerous. First, the austerity regime cut the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) division responsible for fighting infectious disease outbreaks. But condemning Donald Trump’s decision making is the easy part. Analyzing bigger issues regarding health care and the inherent inefficiencies created by capitalism is much harder.

We are constantly told that socialism doesn’t work. But it is socialist China, where the virus began, that has made the most headway in slowing its spread. Conversely, the United States has none of the systems or infrastructure that would allow it to accomplish the same thing. It is capitalism that doesn’t work well when human needs must be met.

There is a constant demand to designate the United States as the best country in the world with the best health care system. In fact health care delivery here is nowhere near being best.

The for-profit system certainly rakes in cash for insurance companies and big pharma. But health care outcomes are mediocre at best and other countries do a far better job for far less money. The most basic needs of patients and health care workers are often unmet. Health care workers complain they haven’t received proper training to protect themselves even as they treat COVID-19 patients.

While Italy, another capitalist nation, has been placed off limits because of the high number of COVID-19 cases, China reports declines in new infections and improvements in treatment protocols. While Americans can’t find hand sanitizer at any price, the Chinese government built new hospitals in just one week’s time.

The profit motive which is constantly touted as the cure all in every situation is instead the cause of every problem. There are other nations which allow private health insurers to operate but they regulate how much money they can make and how they can operate.

The so-called greatest country passes up no opportunity to allow the predators to extract from their victims. The failed state doesn’t have enough of the tests needed to diagnose COVID-19 and those who manage to be tested and treated can be charged up to $3,000 for what ought to be a right and free of charge.

Nearly every solution presented as addressing this crisis places burdens on the people.

The “gig” economy and low wage hourly jobs don’t allow workers to take time off if they feel ill. The high price of health care is an impediment to treating all kinds of illnesses. The man whom the Democratic Party establishment want to be the next president brags that he would veto any effort to provide free health care for all. It is little wonder that Americans lag in every measure of good health and panic when a new communicable disease makes an appearance.

While the highly touted capitalist system can’t provide enough hand sanitizer the governor of New York came up with a solution. Andrew Cuomo announced that the state will produce hand sanitizer made by prison labor . The product called NYS Clean will be provided to public agencies in the state. The inmates at Great Meadow Correctional Facility are paid between 16 and 65 cents for their work. It is typical for the United States to turn to its most exploitative system to meet a basic need.

The irony isn’t lost on anyone who is paying attention. The greatest nation cuts the public resource which would have mitigated the effects of COVID-19, continues its profit making system that causes suffering even as it is supposed to bring health, and then uses prison slave labor to do what the much vaunted system cannot.

The police kill more people and the cost of health care is the worst in the world. But woe unto us if we need to save our lives from illness. COVID-19 is a new illness presenting new problems, but this country doesn’t care for its people in the best of times. COVID-19 is again making that clear.

Race-Based Coronavirus Misinformation The Root -- Congressman Rep. Bobby Rush is not here for the spreading of misinformation regarding the coronavirus crisis—particularly, race-based misinformation.

CNBC reported that Rush lashed out at the CEOs of Facebook and Twitter last Friday for allowing their digital spaces to be used as propaganda hubs for false and often racist information mentioning, specifically, the debunked claim that Black people are immune to the virus.

“I have been profoundly disappointed to see countless examples of misinformation and downright lies propagated on your platforms,” Rush wrote in a letter to both CEOs asking how they are combating “race-based targeting and harassment.” “Furthermore, much of this misinformation has also conveyed racist themes and language — literally adding insult to injury.”

Rush also spoke of the repercussions people of color face as a result of these false claims being spread.

“Such characterizations have led to race-based violence around the world and have attempted to lull certain racial groups into a dangerous, false sense of security regarding their susceptibility to this disease,” Rush wrote.

Rush pointed to a Friday tweet by British-American computer programmer and businessman John McAfee saying “Coronavirus cannot attack black people because it is a Chinese virus.”

The Illinois Democrat tagged Twitter and CEO Jack Dorsey in a post asking, ″what exactly are you doing about this type of blatant misinformation?” Rush said on Twitter. “By allowing these lies to spread, you are COMPLICIT in any harm that may be suffered by members of my community as a result.”

According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website, “Diseases can make anyone sick regardless of their race or ethnicity.” The idea that the melanin in our skin acts as a virus deflector leaving us Black and Brown people immune to the coronavirus pandemic is supported by zero evidence.

For what it’s worth, it does appear that Facebook and Twitter have taken some measures to combat the nonsense.
