The stroller Nyree was in landed 40 feet away from the crash site. The aunt was hospitalized. No charges were filed against the 44 year old driver at press time.

Brown Appointed Chairman of State Democratic Committee When Mayor Byron Brown was appointed New York State Democratic Party Chairman last month he became the first Buffalonian since Joseph F. Crangle in 1974 to lead the state party; making him not only responsible for the City of Buffalo, but for New York State’s 5,268,431 Democrats as well. Mayor Brown said he is pleased with the governor’s confidence in recommending him to serve as state chair. (Some political observers suggest Cuomo snubbed Brown twice in the past by not selecting him as Lieutenant Governor.)

“I’m excited about his leadership,” said Mayor Lovely Warren, D-Rochester. “I believe that he’s a great person, a man that’s going to take our party where we need to go here in our state.”

Brown’s appointment means he will have to step down from the State University of New York Board of Trustees.

Although the BMHA tenant commissioner election was held June 14, election results are still not known, and may not be until after July, according to a Buffalo News report.

The reason? The large number of ballots would automatically take a few extra days.

However because the city and the BMHA have to return to court July 13 for a hearing addressing whether Mayor Brown had the authority to remove former commissioner Joseph Mascia from office and whether the BMHA had a right to ban him from running in the election, Mascia questioned whether the election results should be officially released before July 13.

If its ruled that he had a right to run, he said it may over turn the election and another would have to be held.

Parents Group Calls Out Racial Bias In Buffalo Public Schools They’re prepared to seek a federal civil rights investigation.

A

spotlight is shining on Buffalo Public Schools. Black parents there believe institutional racism prevents their children from gaining admission to the city’s top schools, so they’re calling for a federal probe, WKBW-TV reports.

Sam Radford, the group’s spokesman, told WKBW-TV that Buffalo’s three best schools accept applicants of color at a disproportionately low rate compared to White students.

“We structurally ensure White children get a top quality education, but we structurally have not made the adjustments to ensure that everybody else benefits,” said Radford, speaking for the Buffalo Parent Coordinating Council.

Another troublesome reality, said Radford, is that 91 percent of the district’s teachers are White and don’t send their own children to schools in the district.

The council wants federal involvement to address those and other issues.

“We are asking for the Office of Civil Rights to come in and take a closer look at the issues of suspension. Take a closer look at where racism is not being confronted in our school district,” Radford told WKBW-TV. Meanwhile, school district officials say they’re paying attention to the issues that the council has raised.

“We’re all concerned about complicit bias, about the type of racism that is sometimes unknown, and unspoken. I know our Superintendent (Dr. Kriner Cash) is extremely committed to making sure that we have a culture responsive school district,” Will Keresztes said, speaking to WKBW-TV on behalf of the school district.

Radford told the news outlet that he’s “hopeful” the superintendent and school board will work with his group to address the parents’ concerns.

First Annual Somali Bantu Community Day On Saturday, July 9, the Somali Bantu Community Organization of Buffalo will hold its 1st Annual Somali Bantu Community Day in LaSalle Park on Porter Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will entail cultural presentations including storytelling, singing and dancing. It will be a one day event to show appreciation to the city of Buffalo for accepting the Bantu, while celebrating our culture and tradition.

The event is free of charge and for all ages. Families are encouraged to attend together. The Somali Bantu Community Organization of Buffalo a local non-profit community based refugee organization that educates and empowers refugees and immigrants to become selfsufficient and active citizens.

Black Lives Matter In Canada Too

Black Lives Matter Toronto, led by a small group of young activists, began in 2014 as an expression of solidarity for Michael Brown, the African American teenager who was fatally shot by a police officer in Ferguson, Mo. (“Hands Up! Don’t Shoot!”) But the movement has grown in size and anger with the recognition, activists and residents say, that Black people in Toronto and across Canada face the same types of prejudices as their American counterparts, while a similar pattern of impunity protects the police.

“People in the U.S. might be surprised or not, to hear that racism doesn’t respect the imagined line of the 49th parallel,” said Sandy Hudson, 30 a graduate student at the University of Toronto and a founder of the chapter.

As in the United States, the Canadian protest movement erupted after police shootings of Black men. One example: Jermaine Carby, 33, was fatally shot by the police in September 2014 after he was pulled over in a city outside Toronto and, the police said he refused to drop a knife.

Investigators found no knife at the scene.

While Canada is often lauded for its past role as a haven for Black slaves fleeing the United States, the Canadian government historically tried to prevent Black immigration, out of fear that it might prompt a backlash from Whites. An order issued in 1911 barred “any immigrants belonging to the Negro race, which is deemed unsuitable to the climate and requirements of Canada,” according to an archived government document.

Government statistics illustrate the challenges Black Canadians face. Black Canadians make up less than 3 percent of the national population but 10 percent of the inmates in federal prisons, and represent the fastest-growing group in such prisons. Just 8 percent of Toronto’s youth population is Black, but 41 percent of the children who are removed from families and placed in the care of the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto are Black.

Iowa Republican lawmaker wants to block Harriet Tubman $20 bill

Apparently there’s one outspoken GOP congressman who doesn’t want to replace Andrew Jackson with Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) filed a measure that would block the Treasury Department from spending money to redesign paper money or coin currency, the Huffington Post reports. King hopes his addendum will be attached to a wider bill that addresses overall Treasury funding.

The congressman is no stranger to controversy. In 2014, he doubled down on the following statement in regards to granting citizenship for undocumented immigrants: “For everyone who’s a valedictorian, there’s another 100 out there who weigh 130 pounds – and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.”

Tubman, a titan in the abolitionist and Women’s Suffrage Movement, was announced as Jackson’s replacement on the $20 bill in April. The swap spurred opposition from many notables, like GOP presumptive nominee Donald Trump and neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

Push for Reparations Members of the National African American Reparations Commission (NAARC) were enthusiastically received in Atlanta June 10th and 11th for two days of meetings, designed to intensify the movement to win reparations for African Americans for centuries of enslavement and generations of damaging discriminatory policies.

Willie Monroe Jr. - Too Much Speed – Too Much Power for Thompson

By Randy Greg Last Saturday night Rochester’s Willie Monroe Jr. (202, 6 KO’s) won a unanimous decision by defeating John Thompson (17-3, 6 KO’s) in a Showtime televised fight at Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York. Two previous Boxcino champions, Willie in 2014 and Thompson in 2015 squared off after both having lost their previous fights in the ring.

The first round started off a bit slow as both were feeling each other out but the second round sped up real quick as Monroe caught Thompson with an overhand left. He caught him flush on the cheek but it was more of a push off than a hit. Either way it sent Thompson to the canvass for a 10 count.

Thompson quickly bounced back up as if to say “I’m not hurt”.

Throughout the rounds Monroe continued to show his crafty speed and in the 5th round he caught Thompson with a straight right jab that again sent Thompson on his back. Thompson got back up and in the 6th round

switched from southpaw to orthodox.

The fight slowed a bit after that as Monroe looked to maintain his comfortable lead and mainly throw punches to counter Thompson’s attack.

When it was all said and done the judges’ scored the fight

It was an impressive return for Willie Monroe Jr. so let’s wait and see what he has in store next.

The Mt. Olive Theater Ministry will present the play, “Somebody Done bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church,” by local playwright Marie Hall Mullen on Friday, July 22 at 12 noon and 6 p.m. at Canisius College Montante Cultural Center, 2001 Main Street.

The play is based on the true story of a church bombing that took place in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963 during the Civil Rights Movement, where four young girls were killed.

50 years ago Barbara Glover shunned the bright lights of Broadway for a Place in the Sun, touching thousands of young lives for the past five decades at Miss Barbara’s School of Dance. The community will celebrate her this weekend for a job well done!

F

ive decades ago Barbara Diane Glover, young and talented with unlimited opportunities before her, shunned the excitement and fame of a career on Broadway for her “Place in the Sun” with the hundreds of eager students at her modest 1234 Genesee Street studio.

She declined offers that many dancers would not refuse, including parts in the Broadway productions of “The Wiz,” “Hello Dolly” and a chance to perform in the 1974 televised Tony Awards ceremony.

Miss Barbara’s School of Dance has over the years, grown to become an institution. And “Miss Barbara,” herself, a positive role model and icon. She has literally touched thousands and thou-

sands of young lives This Sunday at the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, 450 Masten Avenue, during the school’s annual recital, the community will honor Buffalo’s “First Lady of Dance” in what promises to be an unforgettable tribute featuring dance school alumni from across the country who will return for special performances in her honor.

That former students put the upcoming event together, she said was truly impressive.

“I can’t believe it myself.

I’m overwhelmed!” she exclaimed.

The show’s theme is “My Story, Our Dance.”

Barbara’s story is nothing short of amazing. Words like dedication, commitment

and hard work almost pale in comparison to the reality of what it has taken to survive all these years. It has not been easy.. But she meets life’s challenges with the grace of a dancer; epitomizing the quotation , “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.”

-Her StoryHere is just a snapshot of a few of her accomplishments: *Born and raised in Buffalo N.Y., Barbara was trained professionally in tap and jazz dance locally and internationally including with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Company. She spent one month in Dakar, Senegal and The Gambia studying the art of African dance. She also taught jazz in Brazil, In 2002. *She started the dance school in 1966 in what was then the Hum-

boldt Branch YMCA at 347 East Ferry Street. “I started out with 12 kids,” she recalled. “But then it began to grow, each year getting bigger and bigger – at least 200-350 students each year.” *More than just a dance school, Miss Barbara’s School of Dance is an institution of learning and character building. Barbara founded the Miss Young, Gifted and Black Pageant in 1972 which was devoted to promoting the wholesome growth and character development of young African American women which she directed and produced for twenty eight years. *She has taught, staged, choreographed, directed and produced shows for countless civic, church and community organizations. And is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. *She has judged preliminaries for the Miss America Pageant. She was the teacher and coach of 1972 Miss Black Teenage New York State and

Miss Black Teenage America. *Miss Barbara’s School of Dance was selected to perform for Magic Music Days at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida in 2002.

Barbara Glover and Miss Barbara’s School of Dance, has affected the lives of thousands of young people who have used her instructions in the art of dance, charm, grace and patience as a basis for their own personal achievement. She continues to be a decisive influence, contributing to the artistic talents of those in the art of dance and continues to ignite dancers’ potential one step at a time. She is a valuable community resource for many groups and organizations that require the use of her choreographic and artistic services and has donated countless volunteer hours to this end.

She is the mother of two daughters, grandmother of four and thanks God for her mother who is 92 years young.

On Thursday June 2, 2016, members of Xi Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated recognized seven students, who participated in their 2015-16 A.S.C.E.N.D. Program. A.S.C.E.N.D. stands for Achievement, Self-Awareness, Communication, Networking and Development.

A.S.C.E.N.D. is the Sorority’s signature program for high school students on their way to higher learning. It is the Sorority’s goal to bridge existing programs with the A.S.C.E.N.D. program to ensure quality service to the students in our community.

This year-long educational enrichment program engaged students in monthly meetings that covered career/college exploration, cultural enrichment, STEM, global awareness, community engagement, networking and self-development. Students also participated in service projects.

The A.S.C.E.N.D. Scholars, Lul Abdi, Jensen Daniels,

Tukyla Hunt, Lauren Killian, Danielle Little, Sherryl Little and Dorian Shelton were honored at a dinner held at Emerson School of Hospitality Banquet Room.

The theme of the program, “A.S.C.E.N.D. Scholars: Step to the Future” was selected by the students. They also participated in the program, introducing the guest speaker and recognizing the workshop presenters. A special spoken-word performance, entitled “FOCUS” was given by Scholar Lauren Killian. The Honorable E. Jeannette Ogden, keynote speaker, reminded the Scholars that their “Step to the Future” was the beginning in their life’s journey.

The students have worked diligently over the year and many are off to college. This award dinner showcased their achievements. Scholarship awards were made to two scholars. Jensen Daniels received the Denise Yvette Royal Memorial Scholarship, a $500 award given by Mary Ruth Kapsiak in memory of her daughter. Barbara

Seals Nevergold presented the $500 Dr. Kenneth Seals, MD Memorial Scholarship, in memory of her brother, to Scholar Lauren Killian.

A contribution from the Buffalo Teachers Federation also provided gift cards for each scholar.

Scholars Abdi, Killian and Danielle Little will be graduating this year and going off to college. Scholars Hunt, Daniels, Shelton and Sheryl Little will be entering their senior year in the Fall. We wish them all the best as they continue their educational

pursuits.

The ASCEND Program will continue for a second year beginning in September 2016. We invite interested high school students to enquire with any member of the Sorority and look for announcements for more information about how they can participate in this exciting program.

Is A Cover-up in the Works?

Release The Tape of Brutal Assault on Prisoner

I

am sure by now all have heard about, but not seen, the video detailing the brutal beating of a handcuffed suspect who was pushed head and face first into a metal door in the police cell block lockup. Perhaps caught unaware or because his hands were restrained with the cuffs and he could not catch himself in time, he proceeded to hit his head on a ledge or shelf when he fell face first and unresponsive to the floor. To make matters worse, he was then dragged along the floor, feet first, into an empty cell, hitting his head for the third time when his face and head hit the bottom frame of the cell's door.

The suspect was locked into a 'restraining chair' and left by himself for almost two hours. His crime for the above treatment?

He asked to see his lawyer!

The fact that the above happened at all is totally unacceptable. The fact that it happened in front of two police officers who did not intervene or stop the abuse is extra Betty Jean troubling. But thankfully, two honest 'cops' GRANT did not buy the bogus story told to them by the senior cellblock attendant, 26-year-old Matthew Jaskula, who claimed that the suspect had a severe nose bleed and had resisted arrest! Thank God, the two supervising lieutenants reviewed the video tape and saw the truth.

The injured suspect's civil rights violations will be addressed, not only by the Buffalo Police but hopefully by the FBI and the United States Office of Civil Rights, as well. What is also extremely troubling, is that some leaders inside City Hall are asking that the video tape not be released to the public until after a trial What would be the reason for this position unless a possible

cover up may be in the making, considering that Jaskula’s father is a long time employee of Buffalo's City Hall.

An official from the New York State Committee on Open Government said in a news report that it would be difficult to envision how disclosure of the videos would interfere with a law enforcement function or judicial proceeding. “How can it be that an individual has been beaten while in custody during an event that has been confirmed by the FBI, but the public doesn’t have the right to know more?” he asked.

We as citizens and elected officials are asked by law enforcement personnel to help eliminate suspicion and mistrust between the residents and the police. Our jobs are made harder when we are put in positions to explain the behavior of those who are sworn to 'serve and protect' show callous disregard for the civil and human rights of others. In this case the attendant, Jaskula, shoved the victim’s face into a wall; one of the officers who witnessed the attack laughed, and the other pretended to express shock . The man the officers arrested was handcuffed, was not resisting and in their legal custody.

We can no longer look with shock at how other countries mistreat their prisoners when the most hideous cases of police brutality and abuse are happening in cities in the U.S.A. including here in Buffalo, New York.

June 2016 Program: The Journey Continues...

T

his is our anniversary month. Prisoners Are People Too, Inc. held its first monthly meeting in June of 2005. We screened the film “Angola,” about the infamous Louisiana State Penitentiary. Our guest speakers were three local ministers who thanked me for my willingness to undertake the task of educating the community about the evils of the prison industrial complex. There were 15 attendees who encouraged me to “keep on keepin’ on,” though my knowledge was very limited. PRP2 has covered many more topics than I ever imagined in 2005. I have met more prisoner justice advocates than I ever imagined and we have stood up for more prisoners and prison families than I ever thought possible. The work has been gratifying as we have garnered some successes, and as we have acknowledged some disappointments that have threatened to derail our efforts.

Not everyone supports or appreciates what we do. Simply saying “prisoners are people,” shouldn’t invite naysayers but it does.

Karima Acknowledging a prisoner’s humanity is AMIN something that is completely foreign to some people until the criminal justice system accuses a beloved family member of wrongdoing. Prisoners Are People Too, Inc. stands ready to enlighten, support (if we can), and advocate for the reforms that would improve a system that puts profits before people.

Without taking a look at the programs that have been delivered since last June, certain guest speakers and topics immediately come to mind. Mr. John Boyd, who was at Attica in 1971, helped us to commemorate the Attica Rebellion last September. Mr. George K. Arthur (former City Council Presi-

dent), Bishop Dwight Brown, Ms. Donna Lewis, and Mr. Sha-teek Howse shared their personal stories about growing up and living in Buffalo’s East Side where crime generative factors, such as poverty, under-employment, and mis-education, have contributed to the level of crime that is part and parcel of East Side living for many residents. Mr. Howse shared excerpts from his recently published book, What Did I say? It’s Something Like Poetry, a collection of personal stories and poems, delineating his thoughts and feelings, prior to, during, and following incarceration. Mental Health, Restorative Justice, and Solitary Confinement, all received our attention during the last year. Mr. John Walker talked about his ongoing fight to clear his name after a wrongful conviction in the 1970s. Our Program Director BaBa Eng was featured in a documentary film about Recidivism produced by David Godwin, a Canisius College student. While we mourn the fact that Robert “Seth” Hayes was recently denied parole for the 10thtime, we celebrate the recent release of Gerrod Bennett who will be returning to our community after 20 years behind bars.

At our next meeting, we will look back, look forward, and celebrate life. Join us on Monday, June 27, from 7:00 to 9:00pm at the Pratt-Willert Community Center, 422 Pratt Street in Buffalo.

Trump Accused of Raping 13-Year-Old in Federal Lawsuit In a new federal lawsuit filed by a New York City woman, Donald Trump is being accused of having raped her in 1994 when she was only 13. The woman, only known as Jane Doe in the lawsuit, said she met Trump at parties thrown by an investor.According to Gothamist, the lawsuit alleges that she was tied to a bed by Trump as he exposed himself and raped her.

The woman said she pleaded for Trump to stop. Trump allegedly responded by “violently striking Plaintiff in the face with his open hand and screaming that he would do whatever he wanted,” court papers indicate, according to the site.“Immediately following this rape, Defendant Trump threatened me that, were I ever to reveal any of the details my family and I would be physically harmed if not killed,” the plaintiff alleges. Trump said there was absolutely no merit to the allegations.

erfect weather complimented a perfect festival, as Juneteenth 2016 drew thousands to Martin Luther King Jr. Park on two sun-drenched days. Saturday and Sunday June 25 and 26.

The annual Juneteenth Parade, the highlight of opening day, was one of the largest to date.

Now in its 41st year, Buffalo’s Juneteenth is the largest in the country. “Juneteenth is a celebration. It’s a celebration of freedom, it’s a celebration of hope and it’s a celebration of potential for tomorrow,” said Juneteenth committee member Jerome Williams.
