he Community Action Organization of Erie County (CAO) was awarded a $300,000 grant from the Housing Trust Fund for the New York Main Street Better Buffalo Fund Program (which comes from the Buffalo Billions). These funds were awarded to give the MLK Business District a facelift. In anticipation of Juneteenth, the Community Action Organization of WNY (CAO), Fillmore Forward, and the MLK Business District spearheaded the African American Heritage Streetscape project – a major and highly visible part of that facelift. The major media, she continued, constantly portrays people of color in a negative light. But the truth is, she noted, “we have tons of leaders and we want the positive to over power the negative so that people can have a sense of pride.”

This first installment of the positive imagery she said, is just the beginning as the plan is to extend the Heritage Streetscape even further.

Mayor Brown, Assemblywoman Peoples-Stokes, Release Statements in Reference to FBI Raids on Grassroots Political Organization

T

hree addresses connected to Grassroots, the East Side political organization that helped propel many of Buffalo's top African-American leaders to power, was raided last Thursday by the FBI. An FBI spokeswoman confirmed that agents were at 339 Genesee St., 1325 Main St. and 64 Meech St. but declined to comment on the nature of any investigation. The raid was first reported by The Buffalo News.

The Genesee Street address is the headquarters of Grassroots, while the other two addresses are connected to Maurice Garner, one of the group's founders.

Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes issued this statement on Thursday: “While in Albany continuing to pass meaningful policy, news from today’s events were brought to my attention. It is my hope that those involved cooperate fully and it is important to allow due process within the justice system to proceed.”

The following statement was released by Mayor Byron Brown: "My focus continues to be serving all of the residents of Buffalo, as we continue to move our City forward and make progress. Earlier today, I learned about events that were occurring through news reports. I have no additional information, and I have followed a policy of not commenting on investigations. I refer those questions to the agencies conducting those investiga-

tions. My focus on serving our City remains my priority."

Mayor Brown, also told the Buffalo News “I dont know anything” when asked about the recent development. He further emphasized that he had not been contacted by investigators or received any subpoena connected to the investigation.

Also taking part in the raids, State Police, the New York Attorney General’s Office, and the IRS. Authorities also removed records from offices of the Urban Chamber of Commerce on Main Street.

WNYmedia Network reports that their sources speculate that the investigation involves long time relationship between embattled political operative Steve Pigeon, Grassroots founder Maurice Garner, Former Deputy Mayor Steve Casey and irregularities involving the 2013 Mayoral campaign of Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown.

Pigeon now faces state and federal charges for bribery and election law violations.

A walking tour along Fillmore, which will give a brief history the banners and their significance to the community, is being planned.

He Was an Enslaved African Soldier Given Into the Care of an Italian Missionary.

The origins of Yasuke are shrouded in mystery, but historians believe the African soldier was born in 1555 in what was then Portuguese Mozambique. He was reportedly sold into slavery following the fall of Abysinnian Bengal, an African kingdom ruled by Ethiopians. Yasuke soon found himself in the care of Italian Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano, who asked that the Black man accompany him on a mission trip to Japan.

His Arrival In Japan Caused Quite the Commotion.

When Yasuke and Alessandro arrived in Kyoto, Japan, in 1579, the sight of the 6-foot2 Black man caused a frenzy in the marketplace. The loud commotion caught the attention of Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga, who was impressed with Yasuke’s towering stature. The daimyo was all too fascinated with the African man’s skin, characterizing him as “handsome” and someone who possessed “the strength of 10 men,” as recorded in the “Lord Nobunaga Chronicle,” the principle Japanese source that describes Yasuke.

He Was Soon Appointed As High-Ranking Samurai.

Yasuke soon rose to prominence as a high-ranking samurai after he was appointed to the top position by Nobunaga.

“Yasuke, conflicted about the violence of his past when he got to Japan, embraced samurai culture and became a useful warrior for the warlord,” said director Gregory Widen, who’s producing the period Continued Page 12

Pregnant Woman Killed By Police While Man in Custody After Children Were Home After Reporting Theft London Terror Attack

S

eattle police shot and killed a mother of four Sundy morning inside her apartment in the presence of her young children after she called law enforcement to report a burglary.

The death of 30-year-old Charleena Lyles, who police say was carrying a knife, has sparked outrage across the country, with critics decrying the shooting as another example of US law enforcement using excessive force against black Americans.

The two White officers fired at Lyles shortly after arriving to investigate a burglary on Sunday morning, and the mother was pronounced dead before she could be taken to a hospital, according to police. Law enforcement on Monday released a four-minute audio recording of the fatal encounter, which captures an officers saying, “We need help” and “Get back!

Get back!” before they fired a stream of bullets.

The Seattle Times identified the woman killed as Lyles and said she was pregnant and that three children, ages one, four Charleena Lyles and 11, were at home during the shooting. Police said the youth were not injured, and that other family members are taking care of them. Police called Lyles a “suspect” in an initial statement, though the Times reported that Lyles was the one who had made the call to report a burglary. “ They didn’t only take one life – they took two lives,” Wanda Cockerhern, a cousin who helped raise Lyles, told the Guardian on Monday. “And they destroyed the four lives of her children.”

Cockerhern, 51, noted that Lyles’ four-year-old daughter has Down’s syndrome and was struggling to understand what had happened. She added: “Her 11-year-old son had to walk over his mother’s dead body ... I want justice, and we want answers.”

Lyles’ relatives said she suffered from mental health challenges. The officers who fired at Lyles are now on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol in a shooting.

It’s unclear how the burglary investigation escalated to a fatal shooting. In the police recording, which came from the officers’ dashcam video systems, one officer implied that he is familiar with the home, saying, “Is this the one with the three kids?” The officers also briefly mentioned possible mental health issues.

The audio suggests that police fired their weapons very soon after first encountering Lyles. One officer asked about an Xbox being taken and whether the door had been unlocked before the police start shouting at the woman to get back. About 15 seconds after that first command, officers started firing.

“What is the reason to use such lethal force?” said Erneshia Jack, a 23-year-old cousin of Lyles. “There are many ways to subdue someone without shooting them. She’s not big. She’s not intimidating … She called you, and you went to her house and killed her.”

Studies have repeatedly suggested that people with mental illnesses and disabilities are killed by police at disproportionately high rates. One report suggested that the risk of being killed by police is 16 times greater for individuals with untreated mental illness compared to other civilians. Police also kill African Americans at rates significantly higher than the rest of the population. The officers who shot Lyles are White.

The shooting came days after a Minnesota police officer was acquitted of manslaughter in the death of Philando Castile, a Black motorist whose case went viral last year after his girlfriend live-streamed the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook.

The decision prompted large protests over the weekend.

Lyles is not the first high-profile case of police profiling black Americans as suspects in their own homes. Last year in Indianapolis, an African American woman was carjacked in front of her home, and after she and her husband called police to report the robbery, law enforcement showed up and shot the husband, with officials later claiming that police thought he was the robbery suspect. There have been similar cases of people shot in their own homes in Arizona, Florida and Texas. -The Guardian

One person died and 11 were injured in the early hours of last Monday morning after a van was driven into a crowd of Muslim worshippers in Finsbury Park, in North London. One man died Of those who were injured, nine were taken to hospital and two were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The victims were all Muslims and the incident was declared a terror attack on the Muslim population. Witnesses said the driver shouted: “I want to kill all Muslims.” before onlookers pinned him to the ground.

He was protected from a crowd by an Imam and other men, who have been credited with saving his life.

A 47-year-old man was arrested by police on suspicion of attempted murder and of a terror offence. He was later named by family and neighbors as Darren Osborne, a man who has previously expressed hatred of Muslims. He was not known to the security services, the government announced.

NAACP Condemns Weakening Rights Enforcement Powers The NAACP released the following statement after the Justice Department issued guidance to the Civil Rights division to settle cases without using consent decrees: no-fault agreements that have helped de-segregate schools, reform police departments, defend religious freedom and ensure access for the disabled.

“Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ order to Civil Rights division staff that they avoid using consent decrees – a historic tool to ensure business and local governments simply follow the rules – is another clear attempt to hurt the Black community by weakening the government’s ability to defend our civil liberties,” said Leon Russell, Board Chairman of the NAACP. “Not only does this break away from decades of tradition, it’s just plain sneaky since the instructions were given verbally rather than written in a memo or email. The NAACP is calling on the Trump Administration to be more open and transparent about changes within the Justice Department’s Civil Rights division and to put protecting Americans first.”

A

s a group, African Americans have more disease, disability and early death as evidenced in the Erie County New York Community Health Assessment for 2014-2017. According to the statistics, African Americans have the highest rates of congestive heart failure compared to ot double or more the rates of hospital admissions for diabetes related conditions compared to their white counterparts. African Americans also have high rates of at least two of diabetes’ most serious complications: amputations and kidney failure and have twice the risk of first ever stroke than whites.

This paints a pretty dismal picture of the health of the African American and begs the question why? Why are we more prone to heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure and its detrimental effects? There is the preconceived notion that our genetic make-up and family history is the overall determinant of health and explains why we may or may not be susceptible to certain chronic diseases.

We think, “oh my mother/father had diabetes, her mother/ father had diabetes and that means I’m predisposed to

having diabetes. This way of thinking causes us to become sideline participants in our health, with the belief that all we can do is hope and pray we don’t develop high blood pressure or high cholesterol and if we do, we take the medicine prescribed by our doctors to manage it.

But I would like to offer a different perspective to explain why African Americans are more prone to chronic disease when compared to our white counterparts. Dr. Michael Greger explains, “The reason diseases tend to run in families may be because diets tend to run in families”. That is such a powerful statement and prompts us to really question if it is our genes and family history that make us prone to some of our most common chronic diseases or is there something else at play, that being our diet. Our eating habits are literally killing us.

ojourners President and Founder Jim Wallis has released sharp criticism of the Fiscal Year 2018 budget proposal put forth by the Trump Administration.

“Before he began his public ministry, Jesus fasted for 40 days. When he returned to Galilee, he proclaimed in his first sermon that ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.’ The word in the original language for ‘good news’ is ‘evangel’ from which we get the word ‘evangelical.’ So as an evangelical, I know that good news to the poor is at the core of Jesus’ message.

“The budget released by the Trump administration is anything but “good news” for the poor. It would be terrible news for those whom Jesus called “the least of these,” the central focus in his final sermon that also calls upon “the nations” to protect the most vulnerable.

Wallis also called on Christians to think about a key question: What would Jesus cut?

“As we look at the priorities outlined in the Trump Administration 2018 budget released today, it’s worth asking again: What would Jesus cut?

“We know what Donald Trump would cut. His budget calls for over $800 billion in cuts to Medicaid, which takes away health care from about 10 million people.

“His budget would slash the Children’s Health Insurance Program, the Social Security Disability Insurance program, Meals on Wheels, and federal funding for Habitat for Humanity. It would worsen hunger in American by cutting SNAP (formerly Food Stamps) by more than 25% and eliminating federal funding for subsidized school lunches.

“President Trump calls for a $43 billion increase in military funding next year, reversing the biblical instruction to beat our swords into plowshares. Instead, the proposed budget cuts would beat plowshares into more swords.

“Leaders in the faith community must stand up to these deeply flawed priorities, to say that the choice to protect the rich instead of the poor in the name of deficit reduction is an immoral one. Demonizing the poor and slashing

programs that benefit low-income people – while refusing to scrutinize the much larger subsidies we provide to the wealthy – is hypocritical and cruel.

“The priorities of this budget are not consistent with Christian, Jewish, or Muslim values. They are not only bad economics, they are also bad religion; as we say in the evangelical community they are unbiblical. “ It is now up to Congress to set their own priorities and to present their own budgets. It is therefore time once again to ask our elected officials – especially those who call themselves people of faith – What would Jesus cut?”

Jim Wallis is a Christian writer and political activist. He is best known as the founder and editor of Sojourners magazine and as the founder of the Washington, D.C.-based Christian community of the same name. He worked as a spiritual advisor to President Barack Obama.

Albright Announces Final Four Artists for Public Art Project As a result of several community meetings led by Albright Knox Public Art Curator Aaron Ott and his team who sought out community input for one of their new public art projects announced earlier this year called The Freedom Wall (working title), great progress has been made. The Gallery has announced that it will add three new artists to execute the planned mural at the corner of Michigan Ave. and Ferry Street, on the wall surrounding the property of the NFTA Cold Spring Bus Maintenance Depot and Offices. The final four artists selected include talented Buffalo artists pictured above (l-r) Edreys Wajed, Julia Douglas, John Baker and Chuck Tingley. Each artist holds a degree from SUNY Buffalo State College and will actively host workshop opportunities during the installation period of the mural that is set to begin this summer. "These artists were selected with vital input from several of our local community meetings. Without the impassioned commitment of many in our region, this project would not be as broadly representative as it has become, with artists crossing the boundaries of age, gender, and race to produce an unparalleled and unprecedented work. he deadline for applying for this year’s Carl R. Allen Memorial Scholarship is June 30.

The $1,000 scholarship is sponsored by the Buffalo Association of Black Journalists with support from The Buffalo News and the Buffalo Newspaper Guild. It is open to AfricanAmerican high school seniors, as well as college freshmen, sophomores and juniors who are or will be pursuing studies leading to a career in journalism. Applicants must be permanent residents of Erie or Niagara counties and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

The African Heritage Food Co-Op recently prepared a group of young people to serve cold refreshing drinks and fruits and vegetables to hundreds of bikers during their 2 scheduled rest stops at the launch of Slow Roll Buffalo in May. Herbert Berg, Elijah Muhammad- Makers of the Muslim World -Part 2 Conclusion-

T

hough different, Elijah’s theology suffers from three similar characteristics: 1. Deification of an imam.

2. Rejection of Sharia or Islamic law.

3. Excessive dependence on hidden, symbolic meanings of the Quran.

Nevertheless, the deification of Master Fard Muhammad by Elijah Muhammad parallels the practices of several other trends in Islamic history. However, his exegesis is not outside the Islamic world.

Elijah Muhammad was taught in the early 1930s by a Master Fard Muhammad in Detroit, Michigan. At first the title prophet was employed for Fard, and Elijah was supreme minister; later after Fard’s disappearance, Elijah would revise these titles. Fard was elevated to godhead and Elijah became his messenger. Fard’s 1930 teachings would be canonized in a series of internal documents or “Lessons”: Teaching for the Lost Found Nation of Islam in a Mathematical Way, Actual Facts, Lesson 1, and Lesson 2.

Berg further closely scrutinized the contents of Elijah’s primary publications: Supreme Wisdom I, Supreme Wisdom II, Message to the Blackman, Hon. Eliljah Muhammad The Fall of America, Our Savior Has Arrived and Theology of Time. He concluded that the major concepts of Fard’s teachings-Yacub, the Black man as god, the White man as devil, the Mother Plane, and de-spiritualization of heaven and hell--were not based on the Quran.

The racialized mythology of the Nation was not all problematic: “It reversed the traditional (and equally racial, even racist) accounts of the European and African contributions to civilization.” It was a source of pride, inspiration, and revolutionary ideas to African Americans. And many whites “matched its description of whites as uncivilized racists.” Moreover, quoting Andrew Clegg: “no historical personality [beside Elijah Muhammad] has had the kind of prolonged impact on black consciousness that he has had, and no recent group in the African American community has promoted -- largely by example¬¬-- economic self-help, cultural regeneration (or redefinition) and moral living more vigorously than his Nation of Islam. The Muslims were black long before it became fashionable…”

Nevertheless, and equally important, the Quran is mentioned, though indirectly and infrequently, throughout Elijah’s writings. This Quranic subtext becomes an important link in how Berg connects the Nation to the larger world of Islam.

Elijah’s respect for Islam is articulated in the banners of the Nation which speak to Shahada, Fard’s name, and how the Quran, for example, is cited two hundred times in his book, Message to the Blackman. But the time was not ripe for a fuller version of the Islam of the Quran. Elijah’s sons, Akbar Muhammad and Warith Deen Muhammad were rejected and ostracized for attempting to introduce traditional Islam. The orthodox view of his sons would have to wait. Yet, “an internal logic in Elijah Muhammad’s profound attachment to Islam and its scripture made the eventual shift away from his racial formulation of Islam inevitable.”

This book includes an insightful section entitled Islamic Trajectories, which is a critique of Warith Deen Muhammad and Louis Farakhan. He asserts that the shift of the Nation to Al-Islam was inevitable, and that it was not due to Warith Deen Muhammad leadership in 1975, but to the implicit Quranic undergirding of Elijah Muhammad’s belief system. Furthermore, Elijah between the years 1960 and 1975 began a gradual shift to the Islam of the Quran, particularly with regard to fasting.

“Perhaps then, both Warith Deen Muhammad and Louis Farrakhan could be seen as merely continuing that process, but at different paces.”

This short book of 170 pages is a scholarly effort to contextualize the contributions of Elijah Muhammad. In the final analysis, Elijah Muhammad must be considered a Muslim and a Maker of the Muslim World ( the title of this scholarly series). And although he mentored many high profile students, his legacy may have extended far beyond them. Berg is convinced that weak scholarship has omitted the significance of the most important Muslim pioneer in American history. This book is useful for religious historians and sympathizers of the Nation who are reassessing and advancing the legacy of Elijah Muhammad.

Questions remain related to the direction of several offshoots of the Nation of Islam.

If Berg’s thesis is correct, these schools of thought will have to think deeply about the ultimate goal of Elijah: to embrace Al-Islam. On the other hand, non-African American Muslims will have to re-think the notion that the Nation was a short-lived aberration of Islam. They need to take the Nation of Islam seriously. At the very least, this book should open dialogue between and among various distant communities--who need, in these times, to communicate and unite.

Designing a Deceitful Dialogue… After Chaos in the Capitol Join PUSH Buffalo and

T

he spin machine went into overdrive on Wednesday, June 14, after 66-year old James Hodgekins opened fire on members of the Republican team that was practicing for that Friday’s charity baseball game against Washington Democrats. Republican Majority Whip Steve Scalise, along with three others were injured in the melee. Despite uncovering a wellspring of crystal clear intent, investigators swore they just couldn’t find a motive for the attack. Hodgekins had written impassioned letters repeatedly to his local newspaper on the need to institute universal health care for all Americans and reduce the nation’s widening income inequality. He advocated taxing the rich more, but said he didn’t envy them. “I just despise the way they have bought our politicians and twisted our laws to their benefit,” he wrote. Hodgekins’ favorite movie was Robert Reich’s “Inequality for All,” the former US Labor Secretary’s documentary formula for reducing income inequality in the country. He said that he wanted to re-elect Barack Obama, and “vote all Republicans out of office.” He said that “the road to SABIRAH hell is paved with Republicans, and he belonged to a social media group called “Terminate the Republican Party.”

MUHAMMAD Confusing, right? Well, if we keep listening to these tricksters, it will be. Hodgekins’ motive was so clear, that if somebody hadn’t replaced his issues with the manufactured talking point of “toning down the political rhetoric,” then his issues are what we’d be talking about. The intensity of his passion surrounding his desire for a more just America would have had us concluding that while he went about things the wrong way, his motive was one the vast majority of us share. In fact, one congressman received a call from someone saying: “One down, 217 to go.” There are 247 Republicans in congress. 217 is the number of members who voted recently to pass Trumpcare.

But suddenly media outlets were pushing cozy Republican/Democrat duets, who vowed that “when the chips are down, we can put party aside.” Representative Nancy Pelosi announced that as the Congressional charity baseball game went on as planned, “We’re all team Scalise tonight.” Ticket sales for the game soared, and the second phase of the spin kicked in. The well-trained parrots of the NRA (National Rifle Association) monitored the dialogue to make sure that any hint of a renewed suggestion of stricter gun control laws was promptly quelled and the speaker chastised. Virginia Governor Terry McCauliffe noted carefully that “This is not what today is about, but there are too many guns on the streets. It’s not just about politicians. We worry about all our citizens.” Right on cue, a reporter shouted: “Why are you bringing it up? People are going to criticize that you are bringing up gun control at this time.” Former congresswoman Gabby Giffords, shot in the head in 2011, tweeted condolences for the family of Steve Scalise, without ever mentioning that the moment was opportune to try again for common sense gun reform laws.

In fact, Republicans had already scheduled a hearing on a bill to make it easier for gun owners to get silencers – next on their list after voting earlier in the year to make it easier for the mentally unstable to purchase guns. Aware of the optics, they cancelled it in the wake of the shooting. Republicans, and a few spineless Democrats have held the line for the NRA and gun manufacturers, despite 40 mass shootings since Gabby Giffords was shot, including the Sandyhook massacre of children. It’s worth noting that Steve Scalise had a security detail at the baseball diamond. He took precautions for his own safety - with the tax money of those he was happy to leave vulnerable in an increasingly perilous climate produced by his own votes and those of his colleagues.

In May of this year, a woman who had attended school with the children of New York Republican Congressman John Faso tried to make that personal connection to him as she begged him to maintain Obamacare. She has a brain tumor, and had been kicked off of her insurance and left to die. Obamacare saved her life. She begged Faso for his promise, which he gave, and then went right back to Washington and voted to kill Obamacare – and that young woman. All over the country, constituents have made their comments personal at Republican town hall meetings. “If you take our healthcare, you’ll be writing my wife’s obituary, one man pleaded.” Cancer patient Christine Griffiths said at a January press conference: “I will have no other option than to just not treat myself. And I will die.” Geoff Ginter ranted at Representative Tom MacArthur of New Jersey after his amendment to allow insurance companies to opt out of core Obamacare mandates and to jack up premiums. “You came after my wife,” he said. “You have been the single greatest threat to my family in the entire world.” A 39-year old with a heart condition at that same meeting told MacArthur that the Republican health care bill would leave him without insurance.

Without health care coverage, I’m dead,” he said.” When MacArther asked rowdy attendees not to be disrespectful, one man retorted: “Can I be disrespectful on behalf of all the people you’re gonna kill?”

It’s easy to call a desperate man who had tried every legal, peaceful means to beg for justice in America “despicable…” because he realized the futility of a

Police Department recently announced new rules that restrict when officers can fire their guns or use other forms of force. The policy instructs officers to defuse tense situations requires them to seek aid for wounded suspects and limits the circumstances under which a fleeing person can be shot.

“Above all else,” Superintendent Eddie Johnson told a room full of officers and reporters, “we will aim to deescalate situations peacefully, with the use of deadly force as a last resort.”

While some hailed the new regulations, skeptics say it is a watered-down policy that fewer limits on officers than a draft published last October, and does not go far enough to prevent police abuses.

Their musical journey began as musicians in The House of God Church where their father Bishop Charles E. Campbell, served as pastor and later presiding State Bishop. They have released six commercial albums and have been highly sought after for recordings in the genres of gospel, jazz, television and film sound tracks.

Most recently, The Campbell Brothers were bestowed the honor of having their music and video performance enshrined in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American heritage and Culture in Washington, DC. -Sojourner Truth Award: Janice Harbin, DDA is the President and CEO for the Anthony L. Jordan Health Corporation in Rochester, NY. She has been a clinical dentist for over 28 years in both Public Health Dentistry and private practice associations. Dr. Harbin served as Dental Director for the Detroit Health Care for the Homeless. In 2009, Dr. Harbin returned to the city of Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion after twenty years to serve as Director of Adult Dental. In July of 2012, Dr. Harbin moved to Rochester, New York to take a position with Jordan Health as their Dental Director, before becoming their Interim CEO in November of 2012. She assumed the position as their President and CEO in October of 2013. During her tenure, Jordan Health Center has expanded its reach from its original site in Northeast Rochester, to various locations throughout the city, and as far away as Canandaigua.

Dr. Harbin holds a Doctorate of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree from Howard University College of Dentistry, Washington, DC (1979) and is a 2014 Fellow of the Healthcare Business Academy.

The founding organization of the National Association of Negro Business & Professional Women’s Clubs (NANBPWC ) was established in 1934 in New York City, by the late Emma Odessa Young, a realtor from New York City, who conceived the idea of a national organization of business and professional women. The aim of this newly formed national organization was then, as it is today, to attract women of high caliber to organize similar clubs whtin their communities. Facing the realities of the times, their daring and inspiring goals were to share their experiences and exchange information; to protect their interest and to encourage and develop opportunities for black women in business and professions.

The Founders were owners, managers, college graduates, and other professionally licensed women, who had managed to realize some measure of personal success, at a time when there was not a national black capitalism program, nor any black studies curricula. Still, these women felt prepared to offer leadership.

The Rochester Club of the NANBPWC, Inc. was organized in 1958. The Genesee Valley Club was organized in 1963. In 1977 the clubs merged and was charted as the national organization as the Rochester Genesee Valley Club of NANBPW Clubs, Inc. they have remained steadfast in their purpose and continue to grow. The programs extend to the young and old. The organization is ever committed to the positive development of the Rochester community and to the sisters engaged in business and professional world in the Rochester area.

Scholarships are awarded to deserving young women and men. Support and co-sponsorship is bestowed upon a number of initiatives designed to educate and support young children. The organization values, NANBPWC honors and respects senior citizens through the delivery of programs that benefit them and hold them in high esteem as Elders. The Genesee Valley Club support extends all the way to the Village of Winneba, Ghana, West Africa by providing food, clothing school and medical supplies. Rochester Genesee Valley Club of NANBPWC is dedicated to uplifting the people of Winneba, especially women and girls.

Over the years, NANBPWC has grown in numbers and scope, conducting many needed community service activities that go far beyond the original purpose. Women have come a long way and so has the NANBPWC, Inc.

When will we develop the same resolve that it’s wrong to kill people with the levers of government?

Many people have come to the conclusion that a third political party is needed to galvanize the vast majority of citizens who no longer even see a reason to participate in the current system. Until that happens, it would help if Democrats quit acting like they’re in a game of “patty cake” and learn how to step to cutthroats. Damn a baseball game. Is it “team Scalise, or team America?” As for the much ballyhooed “working White America,” it’s time to get off the fence. You can’t keep begging to keep your health care – and then keep voting for those who are trying to take it. Your hatred of the thought that Black and Brown people might also have health care – is killing you.

He Was Allowed to Dine with Lord Nobunaga, a Very Prestigious Honor Yasuke enjoyed moderate fame as a high-ranking samurai with his own katana, or traditional Japanese sword.

Unlike other officials of the military order, the Black samurai was regularly invited to dine with warlord Nobunaga.

Such an honor was reserved for a select few.

His Career as an All-Powerful Samurai Was Short-Lived.

Unfortunately, Yasuke’s time as a powerful samurai lasted only a short year (1581-1582), thanks to the successful overthrow of Nobunaga by one of his former generals, Akechi Mitsuhide, in June of 1582.

As a result, the warlord and his supporters were forced to perform the ritual suicide of “seppuku.”

Nobunaga’s successor apparently took pity on the Black samurai and spared him from performing the ritual.

Yasuke was returned to Italian Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano and lived in obscurity until his death.
