The Library will honor individuals living with and advocating for Sickle Cell Disease by shining Red Lights on the building beginning June 19th. We understand June 19th is also Father’s Day, so for those who are not able to attend on June 19th, the Red Lights will continue to be on display until June 20th, in recognition of spreading awareness about the chronic illness - Sickle Cell Disease. Mayor Warren Releases Statement on Recent Boys and Girls Club Trial Verdict uneteenth (June 18) is being celebrated in our City with a parade and community-wide celebration. Last year was phenomenal but we want this year to be EPIC!!!!

The day kicks off with the annual Juneteenth which starts at 11:00 a.m. at City Hall. It proceeds west on Main; left on Exchange or Plymouth, left on Broad; and will end at MLK Park with the celebration taking place at MLK Park from noon through 7p.m. with entertainers, speakers, family activities, vendors, and more!

The day will feature two events: The Graduate March with seniors across the Rochester City School Disrrict participating, former grads marching with them, other students participating, etc. along with AALDP grads, members of various organizations and others participating.

Following the march, the official “Juneteenth” Program begins at noon in the park and includes the Black Business Marketplace featuring various vendors, voter registration, music, and food. Featured will be a Juneteenth Gospel celebration with Samuel Oliver, Rebekah Reid, Randy Gatson and Rickey Harvey Jr. Co hosted by “KD” and Johnson.”

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. It was on June 19, 1865 that Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Juneteenth continues to enjoy a growing renaissance and interest from communities and organizations throughout the country. So many (Black) Americans have had an interest and obligation to see that the events of 1865 in Texas are not forgotten.

Buffalo Association of Black Journalists with support from The Buffalo News and the Buffalo Newspaper Guild. It is open to African-American high school seniors, as well as college freshmen, sophomores and juniors who are or will be pursuing studies leading to a career in journalism.

The scholarship is awarded annually in memory of Allen, a longtime reporter for The Buffalo News and the Challenger, who died in 1999.

Peacemakers On wheels!

Although the Juneteenth Festivals have been very peaceful, (and no problems are anticipated this weekend), The Buffalo Peacemakers will be on bicycle patrol in the park for added security Saturday and Sunday thanks to a donation from Dasa Properties. A local property management firm, Dasa donated $600 for the purchase of four bicycles. The Peacemakers regularly help keep the peace at major public events and work with young people in the community.

Annual Maafa Celebration of Remembrance Hosts Dr. Daniel Black, Noted Author

uneteenth Festivals’ MAAFA Memorial Committee and the Son’s of David Project of Lincoln Memorial United

Methodist Church will bring Dr. Daniel Black, author of The Coming to address the MAAFA (Africa’s terrible disaster). The book tells the story of the Africans capture and traumatic trip during the Middle Passage. Dr. Black will speak at Lincoln, 641 Masten Avenue, during Sunday worship service on June 19th at 10am.

Dr. Black is at the top of his literary game with The Coming. A novel hailed as “powerful, beautiful, poetic, and hypnotizing,” it tells the story of the strength andresolve of the African spirit. Extreme conditions produce extraordinary insight, and only after being stripped of everything do they discover the unspeakable beauty they once took for granted.

Copies of the book will be available after the worship service and at DR. BLACK the Zawadi Bookstore vendor site during the Juneteenth Festival.

A segment of Dr. Black reading from The Coming, will be reviewed during the MAAFA Memorial Commemoration program, which will be held on Monday, June 20th. The program begins at 6 p.m. at the Frank E. Merriweather Public Library, Jefferson and East Utica. After the viewing, participants will proceed to Broderick Park (foot of Ferry street) for traditional African rituals (libation, drumming, spoken words and dancing.)

SolarCity and LP Ciminelli to Appear at Community Meeting On Thursday, June 16, representatives from SolarCity and LP Ciminelli will be the guests of the Contract Compliance Review at a community meeting at the Merriweather Library from 6-7:45 p.m.

Mr. Kevin Schuler and Ms. Stephanie Pennington will address the minority and women hiring goals of their company, LP Ciminelli and also explain how the hours of minority and women workers are computed in reaching their minority hiring goals.. This explanation by them is needed because the community is confused as to how the ‘total hours’ concept is used. However, that concept does not accurately detail the number of workers on the job; only the total accumulative hours worked by all of them.

Representatives from SolarCity will talk about the recently sharp reduction in the number of manufacturing jobs that will be available for future hires.

After announcing last year that 1,460 jobs will be filled at the RiverBend site, SolarCity stated last month they only need the lower number because robots Betty Jean will fill the void. At a community meeting held recently at he A.D. Price GRANT Community Center, SolarCity was told, in no uncertain term by this writer that, “Since robots did not make all that money the government ‘gave’ to SolarCity, we should not be replacing those taxpaying human’s jobs with robots!”

The meeting will start on time and parking is available on the streets around the library and in the Apollo Theater and E. Utica St. parking lots across the street from the Merriweather. Later attempts to explain this two and a half year delay in the receipt of this important news have yielded several versions that have been handed down through the years.

Often told is the story of a messenger who was murdered on his way to Texas with the news of freedom. Another, is that the news wasdeliberately withheld by the enslavers to maintain the labor force on the plantations. And still another, is that federal troops actually waited for the slave owners to reap the benefits of one last cotton harvest before going to Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation.

All of which, or neither of these version could be true.

108-Year-Old Man, ‘Grandson of a NATIONAL REPORT: Slave,’ Meets President Barack Obama Black Students The White House released a touching video over the weekend of President Barack Obama meeting a 108-year-old man in Indiana last week.

“The grandson of a slave shaking hands with the president of the United States,” Lester Townsend said as he took Obama’s hand.

“Oh, man, that’s something right there,” Obama responded.

“What an honor to see you here.”

The president joked with Townsend, insisting that the spry gentleman—living proof of the fact that black don’t crack—had to be lying about his age.

“So how come you look so good? What’s your secret?” Obama inquired.

“I haven’t found it,” Townsend laughed.

Dont’ Forget Dad This Father’s Day!

Nearly 4 time as likely as Whites to be Suspended African-American students are nearly four times as likely as their White classmates to be suspended from school, new federal data show, a stark reminder that more than 60 years after the Brown v.

Board of Education decision, public school is a different place for many minority students than it is for White students.

From gifted-and-talented programs to teacher experience to advanced science and math courses, the data show, the schools that enroll large numbers of minority students are unequal in nearly every way.

U.S. Education Secretary John King said the findings lay bare the USA’s “systemic failure” to educate all students equally.

These data show that we still fall far short of that ideal,” he said, noting that students of color, those whose first language is not English and those with disabilities are “not getting same opportunities to learn” as other classmates.

“When we deny some students access to a high-quality education, we all lose out in multiple ways,” he said.

The new data, out last Tuesday from the U.S. Department of Education and required by Congress, show that African-American K-12 students are 3.8 times as likely to receive one or more out-of-school suspensions as white students. While 6% of all students received one or more out-of-school suspensions in the 2013-2014 school year, the percentage was 18% for African-American boys and 10% for African-American girls.

By contrast, among White students, only 5% of boys and 2% of girls were suspended at least once, according to the data, released biannually by the department’s Office of Civil Rights.

The findings come less than a week after researchers with the Civil Rights Project at the University of California, Los Angeles, released a study suggesting that suspensions in 10th grade alone probably result in more than 67,000 high school dropouts. Over the course of a lifetime, each dropout is responsible for $163,000 in lost tax revenue.

Dallas Brothers are College Bound!

C

ollege Bound members Jamell Dallas and Darnell Dallas have both been awarded a $1350 scholarship to attend the highly competitive high school preparatory program, BuffaloPrep.

The boys have both been accepted into the 2016 summer program whose mission is to, “prepare promising, economically disadvantaged, underrepresented students for success in college-preparatory high schools and higher education.”

Jamell, age 11, and Darnell, age 12, have been playing basketball for Coach Calvin Johnson since they were 4 and 5 years old.

College Bound and its founder, Coach Johnson, have encouraged both brothers and numerous other Buffalo youth to seek a higher education, through their love of sports. ColJamell and Darnell Dallas. lege Bound members receive English and math support, financial literacy seminars, and leadership opportunities, along with instruction in team building and the fundamentals of basketball.

COACH The brothers attend St. Mark’s School of Buffalo where they are honors CAL students.

Currently Darnell has a goal of attending Canisius High school and then going on to play ball at the collegiate level.

Jamell dreams of playing professional sports and one day becoming a lawyer. College Bound is supporting both boys in achieving their dreams for the future. Congratulations!

Broadway Fillmore NHS is now accepting applications from low income homeowners who live along the South Fillmore corridor (Best Street to Seneca). This includes the adjacent streets.

Eligible applicants must live in the home, meet the income requirements, be current on their taxes & have homeowner’s insurance. (We can help with the insurance requirement.) We are particularly looking for very low income frail elderly owners.

Property owners will be required to bring their property up to current residential property code.

This will include issues such as asbestos, lead paint, energy conservation & accessibility. All owners will be required to contribute a minimum of 10% of the project costs. If the total project cost is $40,000, the owner must contribute at least $4000. We can provide a low interest loan (3%) for owners who need to borrow the funds to meet this requirement. The freshman Senator from Georgia recited the Bible verse at a major Christian conference, which continues, “May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.”

At a major event for conservative Christians last Friday, the Republican Senator from Georgia opened his remarks encouraging attendees to pray for our current president—which seems nice enough, and frankly, a very American thing to do.

Yet, Sen. David Perdue, a freshman senator from Georgia, opened his remarks at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s Road to Majority conference by asking those in the audience to do so this way: “We should pray for him like Psalms 109:8 says: Let his days be few, and let another have his office,” the freshman senator said, in a mocking tone, reports the Daily Beast.

The rest of that passage, which Perdue did not recite (but ostensibly was very familiar to the crowd), reads, “May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. May his children be wandering beggars; may they be driven from their ruined homes.”

It continues, “Let the creditor seize all that he has, and let strangers plunder his labor. Let there be none to extend mercy to him, nor let there be any to favor his fatherless children. Let his posterity be cut off, and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.”

Predictably, the senator’s remarks provoked immediate backlash—even from Republicans—with a spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, tweeting, “Republican Senator David Perdue is praying for President Obama to die. This is why Trump is the GOP nominee.”

A Perdue spokeswoman later that day, blamed the press for“creating controversy” with the story.

“Memorializing,” Sanitizing, and Neutralizing Muhammad Ali

“Ramadan,”Al-Islam and Freedom Part 2 Conclusion

J

ust as the music industry, business and most sports are controlled and extorted by groups and individuals who muscle in on talented folk to usurp the wealth created by their efforts, boxing was once controlled by the mafia. That ended when they pushed up on Muhammad Ali, and told him to “lie down...” that is...to throw his upcoming fight with Ernie Terrell in 1967. The men of the Nation of Islam, the FOI, paid their enforcer a visit, and whipped his natural behind.

When the mafia threatened to break Ali’s kneecaps, The Honorable Elijah Muhammad sent them a message, reminding them that they had kneecaps too.

This is the reason that the sport of boxing doesn’t resemble the obscene slave plantations of the NFL and the NBA, where glistening black bucks are stripped down, examined, and auctioned off in public to the highest bidder. Where...in one season, for example, Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn lynch earned $6 million, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was paid $44 million.

Unlike the Bible, the Holy Qur’an has not been re-written to suit the goals of those who use scriptures to enslave body, mind, and soul. “Scriptures” that instruct slaves to obey their masters, and to turn the other cheek, and to give one’s pants to the one who has stolen your cloak - have produced a people who respond to brutal slaughter by raising our hands in surrender, and chanting “Hands Up, Don’t shoot!” The Holy Qur’an instructs the Believer to “fight with those - who fight with you.” It tells the oppressed that “retaliation is prescribed for you,” and that “persecution is worse than slaughter.” And for today’s newly enamored fans of Malcolm X, that’s what he called “a good religion. That’s that old time religion.”

It’s that reputation of clean, productive, self respecting people in service to black America that caused the community to surround the Nation’s Texas mosque just recently, when some gun toting hayseeds who obviously had no clue - sought to include an NOI mosque in their intimidation circuit. The docile, compliant slave can’t be found in the Nation of Islam, nor in the hearts of any we touch. The police stopped raiding NOI mosques decades ago, when they busted up into our spaces and some from both sides left in Sabirah body bags. But that’s the price of attacking peaceful, law abiding Muslims...

There are so many reasons that the faith of Muhammad Ali had to be reinterpreted, covered over, or otherwise diluted during the time that we were focused on his passing. By the time the televised memorial service was over, we had a picture of a 12 year old boy who stumbled into a police officer after his bike was stolen, who then directed the boy to a boxing ring, where a world champion was born. Even Ali’s wife Lonnie participated in the travesty of omission, capping the tale by offering the lesson that when a cop and an inner city kid talk to each other, great things can happen. That line produced a standing ovation, which pretty much sums up the point. Black men who are uncompromising, refusing to bow to the will of white supremacy don’t get standing ovations. They get what the Hon. Minister Louis Farrakhan got on his way into the service...surrounded and stalked by menacing police. Imagine the scene! Two men from the same root teaching, both of whom have shaken the world with consistent courage in spite of massive opposition, one lauded unceasingly, and one a pariah. The difference? One of them can still speak for himself.

Members of the Nation of Islam have taken to social media and set the record straight. They have flooded the networks, giving proper recognition to the Hon. Elijah Muhammad and the Believers of the Nation who were truly the bedrock and the bosom of Muhammad Ali. On Sunday, June 12, Minister Farrakhan took to the rostrum at Mosque Maryam and chiseled our truth in stone. Our work for this moment is to try...just try to summon enough emotional strength to consider the cruelty of the final phase of the attempt to neutralize the power left in the legacy of Ali, even after the re-write. In this hour, an ominous warning that the Hon. Elijah Muhammad gave to us when exposing our open enemy to us is fitting: “You cannot fathom the depths of the wickedness of Satan.”

The idea of freedom in AL IslamThe Qur’an states that there is no compulsion in religion. Prophet Muhammad is reported to have said that “every one of you is entitled to his/her opinion.” The Prophet also expressed that “there is nothing with greater use than the human brain.” Religion in Al Islam should not be practiced just in spirit or emotions. Although the Qur’an was revealed upon the heart of the Prophet the brain serves the heart. The brain should also serve the family and the community. The superiority of the human being above all other creation is due to the human brain. Education allows you to think, make good decisions, and develop good character. The use of the brain allows you to understand that man is no comparison to G-d and that G-d has no partners or associates that can compare with Him. This allows the human being to have freedom in his servitude to G-d and not to become a slave to anyone or anything.

What colossal event could silence the noise of his praise, and replace the powerful imagery of presidents and rabbis, and priests and celebrities gathered together in unison, with the common goal of honoring both a Muslim - and a black man? The world of white supremacy is at war with Islam! It is most certainly at war with black and brown people.

Yet here we were, strolling down memory lane, watching movies and documentaries over again, totally, emotionally immersed in our love and admiration for this man. Whatever the tool to turn the narrative...to re-focus it on the horror of Isis and re-associate Islam to all things evil... it would have to be big.

And at approximately 2:00 in the morning, two days after the memorial, a young Arab man walks into a homosexual bar - and shoots over a hundred people. When did he buy his guns?

Within that same week. Whom did he choose to target? One of the groups on the list of “expendables.” The same group that was selected to test the AIDS virus on, as chronicled by Alan Cantwell, in his book AIDS and the Doctors of Death. You may recall that AIDS was formerly called GRID, for “gay related immune deficiency.” For those who seek to ride to their destinations on the vehicle of black pain, the claim that “gay is the new black” is a promise of a bumpy ride.

The shooter in Orlando was known to the FBI and CIA, just as former CIA collaborators Sadaam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden, and Panama’s Manuel Norriega were. No doubt they had him on speed dial. Did he plan to be killed or jailed if in fact he collaborated with them? Probably not, just as his predecessors didn’t. If you are appalled...utterly incredulous over the notion that these government agencies would target and kill mass numbers of its own citizens to take control of public opinion, where were you on September 11, 2001? Weren’t 3,000 sacrificed to justify an attack on Iraq? Weren’t over 4,000 soldiers killed while killing hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis? What about the faked attack in the Gulf of Tonkin, (August, 1964) that was used to give Lyndon Johnson the resolution that sent the country into war with Viet Nam? Over 58,000 Americans were killed in that war...and hundreds of thousands of innocents at the hands of American aggression. In recently released tapes, Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara can be heard plotting the scheme. Johnson: “What I want is somebody that can lay up some plans to trap some of these guys...and whoop hell out of ‘em. Kill some of ‘em.” McNamara replies: “I’ll try and bring something back that will meet that objective.”

These are some ghost-face killas. These are they who praise on Monday, while plotting murder and mayhem on Tuesday. They emblazon anthems about the “land of the free, and home of the brave,” a place of refuge for “huddled masses yearning to breath free” into our hearts and minds as we stand erect before some blood-stained stars and stripes...our blood...and our stripes. See the covert war that’s raging for our perception, in preparation for a tolerable onslaught on Muslims all over the world...but particularly right here in America, with their chief target as the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan.

This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer.”

The reactions to this profound news ranged from pure shock to immediatejubilation. While many lingered to learn of this new employer to employee relationship, many left before these offers were completely off the lips of their former ‘masters’ - attesting to the varying conditions on the plantations and the realization of freedom. Even with nowhere to go, many felt that leaving the plantation would be their first grasp of freedom. North was a logical destina-

tion and for many it represented true freedom.

he VOICE Criminal Justice Task Force on June 14 kicked off its campaign to lower the prisoner population in the Holding Center and County Jail by as much as 50% with a “Revival”/rally In front of the Old Erie County Courthouse on Franklin Street.

The short but powerful Revival to announce their campaign, featured drumming, singing, praying, scripture, and a (very short) sermon. Speakers include Eric Weigel of the Erie County Department of Mental Health, County Legislator Barbra Miller-Williams, Karima Amin and BaBa Eng of Prisoners Are People Too, the Rev. Jackie Ross-Brown of New Covenant United Church of Christ and the Rev. Matt Lincoln of Trinity Episcopal Church.

Facts: It’s outrageous, but… from 1980 to 2008, the number of people incarcerated in America quadrupled, from roughly 500,000 to 2.3 million people. Today, the US is 5% of the World population and has 25% of world prisoners. Combining the number of people in prison and jail with those under parole or probation supervision, 1 in every 31 adults, or 3.2 percent of the population is under some form of correctional control.

African Americans now constitute nearly 1 million of the total 2.3 million incarcerated population. African Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites.

Together, African American and Hispanics comprised 58% of all prisoners in 2008, even though African Americans and Hispanics make up approximately one quarter of the US population.

Erie County is no different.

In our county the frequency of drug offenses between African American and Anglo young adults is roughly equal.

Yet while the African American population of Erie County is 14%, they constitute 43% of those arrested for drug offenses and 67% of those convicted and sentenced. Approximately 35% of our prison population is considered mentally ill.

Prisons are not meant to be

mental health institutions.

By incarcerating those with mental health and addiction issues and not treating and supporting them we are damaging human lives, separating families, and paying inordinate amounts of tax dollars to support this system. It costs $63,875 annually to house an inmate.

We can change these appalling statistics! By training police officers and judges to be aware of racial prejudices and to seek alternatives to incarceration -- and by diverting as many people as possible from imprisonment into safe alternatives VOICE-Buffalo: VOICE is a powerful organization of 60 faith communities and organizations working together to improve the quality of life in Western New York.

Recently VOICE’s Criminal Justice Task Force helped to reinstate the Local Conditional Release Program in Erie County.
