CI Bullock Scholarship Sunday

Memorial AME Zion Church celebrated it’s annual CI Bullock Scholarship Sunday on June 26, 2022. The theme was ‘Believe, Achieve, Succeed’.

Nigena Livingston, Founder and CEO of URBAN ACT Academy in Indianapolis, Indiana was the speaker. URBAN ACT ACADEMY is a charter school that serves approximately 350 students in grades kindergarten to 8th grade.

Ms. Livingston shared an inspirational and motivational message about her experiences as a student and acknowledged that it wasn’t always a straight Nigena Livingston and narrow path to her current position in educational leadership.

Key takeaways from her message were ‘Never allow anyone else to set limits for you’ and ‘Failure isn’t final’. Ms. Livingston is a former CI Bullock Scholarship recipient. She is the daughter of Carl and Gail Livingston.

Although there weren’t any 2022 scholarship recipients, students from PreK-11th grade were recognized for their accomplishments during the 2021-2022 year with a McDonald’s gift card from the CI Bullock Scholarship Committee.

In addition, the following college graduates were recognized: James Weathers and Davina Jones received bachelor’s degrees in May 2022; Darrin Carter received a master’s degree in May 2022; Christina Kennedy, Andrea Wilson and Traci Wilson Terrance received doctoral degrees in May 2022.

The CI Bullock Scholarship Committee at Memorial looks forward to recognizing several 2023 high school graduates next year.

The CI Bullock Scholarship is named after the late Clarence I. Bullock. Mr. Bullock, felt that Memorial had a moral obligation support youth transitioning from high school to college.

As a result, he donated the first $100 in 1977 towards a scholarship for high school graduates. To date, this fund has awarded more than $162,500.00 to some 163 recipients. Over 200,000 Attend 9-Day Rochester International Jazz Festival: Danielle Ponder Shines! By GEORGE RADNEY The promoters for the 19th Annual Rochester International Jazz Festival, John Nugent and Marc Iacona, estimated over 210,000 people attended the 9-day event. That’s also attributed to people wanting to be outside and listen to live music once again.

Let’s get right to the very best of the 2022 festival.

Sheila E was outstanding with her P- Funk, R&B, and Latin fusion show. It was very high energy with tributes to James Brown, Sly Stone, George Clinton and her closing tribute to Prince was very moving and on point. She captured the true essence of Prince and how he really was as a performer and artist. She was also able to perform the various dances of Prince’s artist including Morris Day skip hip hop crossover moves were on point. Sheila E truly loved Prince and it shows in her musical style.

Robin Thicke also performed to over 10,000 people at Parcel 5 in the heart of downtown Rochester. Robin had a high energy performance that included his hit songs along with several Motown classics.

The New Power Generation (NPG) was playing the music of Prince and you could tell from the start they were not the original band that toured with him. Their performance was disjointed and not precise at all. As a matter of fact, several Buffalo and Rochester bands could have done a better job. Once again, the real tribute to Prince was done by Sheila E. Rochester’s

The Bands on the Bricks summer concert series at the Public Market begins, Friday, July 8 with Latino Night. This year’s MC and host will be Adrian Franco, with musical performances by Canchani y su Grupo Acustico Latino, Los Infieles, and Banda Light, plus live DJ sets by Johnny Mambo.

The Bands on the Bricks free summer concert series showcases the City of Rochester Public Market and Market District with a musical lineup from 6 to 10 p.m. for the next five Fridays in July. Along with free parking. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and headliners begin at 8 p.m. Food trucks, food stands and beer and beverage vendors will be part of each week’s concert event.

White Supremacist Mass Murderer Court Date July 7 Payton Gendron, the avowed White supremacist charged with the racist mass shooting that killed 10 innocent Black people at the Jefferson Avenue Tops Market is due back in court on July 7. Gendron pleaded not guilty to hate-motivated domestic terrorism and murder as a hate crime as well as other charges earlier this month - despite what a prosecutor called overwhelming evidence against him.

City Court Chief Judge JaHarr S. Pridgen replaces Judge Craig D. Hannah, who was recently appointed to fill a vacancy on the New York State Supreme Court Mayor Byron W. Brown recently announced the appointment of new Buffalo City Court Chief Judge JaHarr S.Pridgen who will fill the vacancy created by Judge Craig D. Hannah. Back in January of 2015, Judge Pridgen became the youngest jurist on the Buffalo City Court bench when Mayor Byron W. Brown appointed her to the position at the age of 34.

Later that same year, , Judge Pridgen was elected unopposed to serve a ten-year term to the Buffalo City Court bench. As a Buffalo City Court Judge, Pridgen handled criminal and civil cases. Prior to her appointment and election, Judge Pridgen served as an Assistant District Attorney Judge Pridgen earned a Bachelor of Science degree from UB and earned her Juris Doctorate from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan. She was admitted to the New York State Bar in 2007.

She is married to Elder Craig D. Pridgen, Pastor of True Bethel Baptist Church of N.F.. They have two children Jordin and Journey.

East Side Couple’s Plumbing Nightmare

I

n early June Angelene Burton and her husband Louis of Northampton Street called a plumber to remedy a problem caused by a backed up sewer. They were told the cost would be $4,000. The couple was offered a payment plan of $2,000 down and monthly payments of $200 to have the job done.

“We went to the bank and got the money, made the payment and they started doing the work,” said Angelene . She also recalls having to insist that the contractor mark “paid” on her receipt.

Her intuition served her well.

Shortly after the hole was dug and the $2,000 deposit made, they were informed by the company that they couldn’t find the sewer line because the digging was done in the wrong area.

“They told us in order to rectify the job they would have to go to the other side of the house and dig to find the line and that it would cost another $10,000 – plus the $2,000 balance!

“After that we didn’t hear from them. I guess they were waiting for us to scrap up some more money or get a loan or one of these grants,” she continued. “We’re on a fixed income and we don't have that kind of money.”

Meanwhile, not only had water begun to fill the unsightly, and hazardous crater in front of their home – there was still water in the basement; a huge inconvenience for her and her husband as well as the tenant downstairs.

The company finally called and asked them what they planned to do. By then they had contacted City Hall.

The business also received a call from City Hall on the couple’s behalf.

“After they got the call from the city, the contractor changed his whole program and told us they would come and fill the hole and give us our money back.”

Meanwhile there’s still water in the basement.

And the couple – in addition to being frustrated and inconvenienced, have yet to get their $2,000 and are still going to have to have the work done.

“We’re still waiting ….we just want them to fill that hole- which has filled up with water - give us our money, and we’ll get somebody else because we’re still inconvenienced. ” Angelene and Louis point to the hole in The basement is still wet, they can’t use their their yard. driveway, and were told to limit their water use for now.

They said they’re in worse shape than they were before they hired the professionals. “At least we didn’t have a big hole in our driveway!!” said Angelene .

Their advice to homeowners: research a company’s record i.e. from the Better Business Bureau and other consumer reporting agencies or get personal references before making a choice.

Going forward that’s exactly what they plan to do!

At press time, however, that big, ugly, dangerous hole was still in front of their house.

Will the company follow up with their offer to fill it and refund Angelene and Louis?

Community Devastated by Loss of Well-Loved Pediatrician and Daughters in Tragic Fire

T

he community is left saddened and in shock by the tragic loss of well- known , widely loved and treasured pediatrician Dr. Jonathan Daniels 53 ,who along with his two daughters Jensen A. Daniels 23 and Jordan A. Daniels 27 lost their lives in an overnight two-alarm fire at their North Buffalo home at 194 Huntington Ave. Although at press time the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, according to officials, the fire started on the second floor of the home and spread to the attic where Daniels and one of his daughters were found. Another found on the second floor of the house. Firefighters and AMR ambulance crews performed CPR but Daniels and his daughters as well as their dog all died at the scene.

Dr. Daniels, who grew up in Buffalo, was one of the first in his immediate family to graduate from college.

While seeking his undergraduate degree he joined the U.S. Army reserves and served a as combat medic during Operation Desert Storm. Thereafter, he returned home to complete his undergraduate degree and followed his passion to attend graduate school at U.B. Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences In 1998 Daniels graduated from the UB School of Medicine and had been practicing for 20+ years until his untimely death.

“He was a tireless advocate for diversifying the physician workforce and has worked closely with the Associated Medical Schools of New York to expand the pool of scholars choosing careers in medicine and health care, by providing academic enrichment and support to students from educationally and/or economically undeserved backgrounds.” Said Dr. Allison Brashear UB vice president for Health Sciences and Dean of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Daniels joined Main Pediatrics team after his residency in 2021. “His dedication to the families of Main Pediatrics, his excellent care of and for children and adolescents and his love of the community made him such a special pediatrician.

We are lucky that he touched our lives, as doctor, as colleague, as leader, as mentor, as role model and so much more. We continue to honor the memory of this extraordinary man and he will forever be a key part of the Main Pediatrics family and legacy.”

At the time of the tragedy Dr. Daniels was a pediatric specialist at Urban Family Practice located on Jefferson Ave. Reverend George Nicholas, leader of the African American Health Equities Task Force, describes the devastating blow to the Black community. “I took my sons to Dr. Daniels—all four of them. He was a terrific doctor. He would talk to them about being a Black man and sexuality. It was just that kind of care,” Nicholas said. “He was a good physician, good husband, good man, and good father."

Daniels was one of only four Black pediatricians and among only three dozen Black physicians practicing in the Buffalo area according to the Rev. Kinzer Pointer, co-convene of the African American Health Equity Task Force. “African American physicians are not readily available and serve a large African American community in this area,” Pointer told the news.

Commission of health Dr. Gale Burstein noted in a statement: “Dr. Daniels was a tremendously talented and empathetic physician and steadfast advocate for improving population health.

His death leaves a profound void in the local pediatric and medical community…”

He is survived by his wife Janessa Givens-Daniels 53 who was able to escape from the fire and his daughter Jillian who was not home when the fire broke out.

Rev. William Gillison: "Well Done, Thy Good and Faithful Servant..."

W

illiam Gillison, the pastor at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Buffalo, passed away on Monday. The church announced his passing late Monday night.

“It’s the biggest of losses,” lamented community activist Sam Radford in reference to the passing of Rev. William Gillison , a friend, colleague and confident. “He was the heart of the Urban Think Tank; the one with the power who could get everybody to the table. He never sold out …he didn’t play politics and would not compromise his principles. We will go on in his spirit.”

Professional photographer and Photo Journalist Richard Blanc called him “a tremendous, wonderful person in this community and a true leader.”

On the evening of Monday, July 4, the Mt. Olive Baptist Church family announced the passing of their beloved spiritual leader.

-Born in BeaufortPastor Gillison a native of Beaufort, South Carolina was called into the ministry in August 1980 and became Pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Buffalo, New York in June 1981. In 1994, Dr. Gillison led God's people into its present three-million-dollar home.

The sanctuary seats approximately 1200 persons with a chapel overflow, 16 classrooms

and an all-purpose hall for lectures and dining. In December 2001, the 20-year mortgage was paid off in six years.

Pastor William Gillison the founder and President of the Mt. Olive Development Corp., founded in 1991, a Community Development Corporation and Moderator of the Great Lakes Baptist Association of churches.

All of his affiliations are too numerous to mention here but incude having served as President of the Baptist Ministers' Conference of Buffalo and Vicinity Pastor Gillison leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, the former Antonia Davis; ; four children :Mia, Dwayne, Crystal and Russell, grandchildren and great grand children Out of all, he has experienced, Pastor Gillison recognizes that God has allowed him to accomplish much in a short span of time. God has brought him on the wings of eagles.

"Healing By The Water"

Broderick Park, "Sacred Ground" Ignored by the City"

T

his Thursday , July 7 and Sunday, July 10, from 5-8 p.m. the Friends of Broderick Park will kick off their 2022 Summer Freedom Celebration, "Healing By the Water," in historic Broderick Park at the Foot of Ferry.

Sponsored by over 20 organizations, the free event which will take place every Thursday and Sunday thru September 29 - will host live bands and premier DJ’s food trucks, a fish fry, vendors and healing-centered activities .

It’s just one of the several family-oriented, culturally rich activities sponsored by The Friends and other community organizations.

But the Friends attempt to continue to keep the focus on Broderick Park as a historic destination point has not been easy.

Broderick Park is sacred ground, largely ignored by the City of Buffalo.

It was the point of departure for countless enslaved Africans seeking freedom to Canada. A small, but significant museum has been developed in the park to tell the story of the Underground Railroad. And the park's landmark scenery, the territorial spirits and its proximity to the spiritual waters is unique and unmatched in this area.

George Johnson and Friends of Broderick Park have basically declared themselves the stewards of this important landmark.

The most recent slap in the face?

The restrooms are not open to the public and filthy Porta Potties have been set up as a replacement. The historical museum is also closed to the public; so “our story” is not accessible.

The city’s Office of Special Events is asking for $1,000 before the event can be fully approved by the Special Events Advisory Commit-

from out of town that visited the Park. No Bathrooms, No Museum, No Running Water. This is the UNDERGROUND RAILROAD, SACRED GROUNDS . We had Our Volunteers cleaning the Porta Potty EVERY HALF HOUR, this is not Right. So Exactly What are we PAYING FOR ?”

Three American Legion Posts Pay their Respects to Victims of Racist Massacre

his past Saturday at the site of the large memorial outside of Tops Market on Jefferson avenue, members of three American Legion Posts dressed in uniform gathered for a special ceremony to pay respects to the Buffalo Ten who were killed in the racist and targeted attack on May 14. Gabriel Rodriguez Post No.1928, Bennett Wells Post No.1780 and Jesse Clipper Post No.430 came together in the early morning to pay their respects. “It was the work of a coward and a terrorist that took their lives, It saddens us that on memorial day and this independence day they will not be able to celebrate and we want to let them know they are not forgotten” said Reverend Eugene L. Brought to you by the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area, the Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Collective, and Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative (Niagara Falls, NY) – The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area and the Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Collective are announcing the first annual Niagara Falls Jazz Fest to take place on Sunday, July 17th, 2022, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Beloved Community Center (lawn), 1710 Calumet Ave, Niagara Falls, NY 14305. This event is a free community concert that highlights “Women in Jazz” and reflects on the influential history of jazz and music in Niagara Falls.

Attendees will enjoy rhythmic performances by Niagara Falls Music Hall of Fame Inductee, Marsha McWilson, and Curtis Lundy and Umoja, featuring Harpist Cassie Watson Francillon. Food trucks Dirty Bird, Cater 2 U Kitchen, and Buffalo Burger Bros will be serving their signature fares, and tasty sweet treats will be available from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM from Kona Ice and The Yummmm Truck.

The Niagara Falls Jazz Fest was created in collaboration with Dawn Berry-Walker, daughter of jazz legend James “Pappy” Martin, and Founder of the Pappy Martin Masten Jazz Festival. Pappy Martin and his brother, John “Spider” Martin, grew up in the Highland neighborhood of Niagara Falls, and famously played at renowned establishments including the Ontario House. To highlight Spider Martin’s story, the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area commissioned Buffalo artist, Edreys Wajed,(as shown above) in 2019 to create a mural of Spider Martin along Main Street, bringing Spider Martin’s story into public space for the first time.

Tim Kennedy, Buffalo Opera Unlimited Artistic Director, Announces Retirement Tim Kennedy, Founder and Artistic Director of Buffalo Opera Unlimited, WNY’s professional opera company, has announced his retirement.

Kennedy, who founded the Buffalo Opera Unlimited, led it for 37 years. He is a Native of Philadelphia.

Under his guidance, the organization’s inclusion strategy has always been ahead of its time; for three decades presenting works by African American composers and embracing diversity and inclusion in the engagement of performers.

Camp Peaceprints is alternative day camp for children 8-13, and is centered on Justice, Peaceful Conflict Resolution, the Arts – and the Beloved Community. It will run July 18-29, Monday through Friday, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM at SS. Columba-Brigid Church, at 75 Hickory Street.

Campers will learn about justice issues with community leaders, including: Citizenship; the Law and Law Enforcement; the Justice System and especially How to Work for Change!

•Field trip to Niagara Falls where we’ll go on Maid of the Mist, and explore the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Museum. Also, to Ganondagan, Seneca center with Longhouse and Haudenosaunee teachings. We’re also planning a trip to the beach, and three trips to the pool!

Quadir Lateef who grew up on Buffalo’s East side, was recently featured in the May 2022 edition of Buffalo Spree in an article by writer Bill Hoppe, who profiled the talented Q spoken word/rap artist.

He is the son of educator and outstanding community members Donna Habeeb and the late entrepreneur Bro. Habeeb. Also known as Q Boogie the Poet, Quadir eventually signed with Ruff Ryders Records and has literally traveled the world performing. His first poetry slam was at E Tea Coffee Cup on Oakgrove Avenue in Buffalo.

The pandemic led him to change course and he became a corrections officer – where he is without a doubt making a positive impact on the brothers behind the walls. However the music/the art is calling him, so are his fans, and he plans to release another project soon through his own label, 33 East Records.

Booker T and a Soul Stax revenue was very good and memorable. Stax refers to the record label based out of Memphis Tennessee which had artist like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and B.B. King just to name a few. Booker T still sounds good like the record on his hits such as the MG’s “Green Onions.”

The people you may have never heard of also put on memorable and outstanding performances.

These artists included: Tivon Pennicott Tenor Sax player who took us to a higher level of consciousness; Connie Han ,a 23-year-old pianist played the piano like her hair was on fire with a very edgy blend of modern and traditional jazz; Nabate Isles a Grammy award winning trumpeter that mesmerized his audience at Max of Eastman Place with his tribute to the jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Doc Cheatham, Louis Armstrong and Wynton Marsalis; Samara Joy, vocalist made you feel like Sarah Vaugh reincarnated with that smooth as velvet sound.

Also: The Wayne Escoffrey Quartet at Kilbourn Hall was a straight-ahead jazz session that reminded me why I love jazz so much with its improvisational style and hard driven sound. Jonathan Scales Fourchestra at Montage was very good with his innovative steel panmist. Rochester native and Jefferson High School alum Joe Locke once again gave us some powerful playing on the Vibraphone and his band was up for the challenge. Last but not least, the legendary Blues Hall of Famer and Grammy award winning Bobby Rush gave his history and told the audience a story about 1951 when he had to perform from behind the curtain in order for the white audience would not know a black man was singing those songs. He’s well past 80 years of age but Mr. Rush has a high energy show.

The 19th Rochester Jazz Festival was quite memorable indoors and outside hopefully next year they will be able to have free shows at Parcel 5. It was truly a very nice kickoff to the summer season.

Legislature Unanimously Passes Resolution Designating Stand Against White Nationalism Day

News Update

As a sign of solidarity in the wake of the May 14th mass shooting at the Jefferson Avenue Tops, the Erie County Legislature voted to confirm May 14th as, “Stand Against White Nationalism Day” in Erie County.

The resolution was sponsored by Chairwoman April N.M. Baskin later received co-sponsorship from 8 other legislators and ultimately passed unanimously 11-0.

Profiled & Gunned Down: Protests in Akron After Police Shot Unarmed Jayland Walker 60+ Times

ass racial justice protests broke out this weekend in Akron, Ohio, after police released multiple body-camera videos showing eight officers chasing and killing 25-year-old Jayland Walker after a minor traffic violation on June 27.

Walker was an unarmed Black man. The video ends with the police firing about 90 rounds and shooting Walker about 60 times, according to an autopsy report, and lawyers for the family of Walker say police handcuffed him after the attack before trying to provide aid.

“The video shows that a Black man was spotted driving at night in an area he probably shouldn’t have been spotted, was profiled, was then chased and gunned down like he wasn’t human at all. Any other narrative is a disgrace to what we’ve seen in the video,” says Ray Greene Jr., executive director of the Freedom BLOC, a Black-led collective based in Akron that pressured the state to release the video.

Police say the videos show a gunshot being fired from the car driven by Jayland Walker before he tried to drive away after police pulled him over for a minor traffic violation.

Police say a gun was later recovered from his car. Jayland Walker was unarmed when police shot him dead.

The newly released body-camera video shows eight officers chasing Walker after he got out of his car and was running away. The video ends with the police firing 90 rounds and shooting Walker about 60 times, according to the autopsy. The Richest Black Person in the World Aliko Dangote began Dangote Sugar in 2000 which debuted on the Nigeria Stock Exchange seven years later, making $450 million.

After many successful manufacturing ventures, he was named the first Nigerian on Forbe’s World’s Billionaire list in 2008 with $3.3 billion. He is currently valued at $14.1 billion by Forbes, making him the richest Black person in the world.

Dangote now lives in Lagos, Nigeria and has three children. He has been able to become the top provider of sugar and cement in Nigeria and all of Africa.

There are currently 17 subsidiaries.

The Dangote Group’s mission is to bring Nigeria to a self-sufficient status by using construction and manufacturing projects in various industries including cement, sugar, salt, condiments, packaging, energy, port operations, fertilizer, and petrochemicals.

These projects have been extended to other countries in Africa to bring them closer to the self-sufficient status as well.

Chairwoman Baskin said “White Nationalism is not just about the actions of organized militias and lone extremists, it has a long history of being perpetuated by all levels of government and in the private sector.

White Nationalism results in minority communities being enmeshed in poverty and crime. White Nationalism is about hatred as well as the dominance of Whites in spaces of leadership using their power to determine the fate of non-whites in this country. It's important that after May 14th, elected leaders take a stand against the overt and the underlying theories of White Nationalism.”

The Erie County Legislature has taken a number of steps to provide relief in response to the mass shooting, including the establishment of the Erie County Healing Hub at Johnnie B Wiley stadium, which offered 10-consecutive weeks of free trauma counseling and groceries to residents of East Buffalo. Other efforts also include the call for investigations into the actions of 911 call takers who improperly handled emergency calls during the mass shooting and at a gathering for one of the victims on May 27. Both calls were made to 911 from zip codes on the East Side. The call takers in both instances were ultimately terminated. The County Legislature also unanimously passed a resolution calling for the establishment of a resiliency center to offer permanent mental health and trauma counseling in the community.

The federal Department of Justice and NYS Office of Victim Services have provided funding to operate such a center.

“We hope to have a committee discussion at the Legislature in the coming weeks to further understand how the $3 Million dollars allocated by Governor Hochul, and the funding provided by DOJ and OVS will be spent on the forthcoming resiliency center,” said Baskin.

“The planning oversight is being handled by the Erie County District Attorney’s Office. “

Our City Action Buffalo and Buffalo Residents Double Down on Democracy and Racial Equity, Release Alternative Map Based on Council and Community Feedback

n Tuesday, June 28th, the Buffalo Common Council hosted their only scheduled public hearing on reapportionment. For over two-and-a-half hours the Council heard from Buffalo residents from across the city of Buffalo about how the process wasn’t open, transparent, or in keeping with the basic principles of co-governance or the spirit of democracy. In short, the plan under consideration by the Council was unanimously rejected by the members of the public who spoke and who sent public comments to Council staff throughout the week. Instead of taking the time allotted per the City Charter -- the end of July -- to reconsider their proposed map and to enter into a participatory mapping process with their constituents, the Council instead tried to rush an invalid and potentially illegal vote on Friday, July 1st at 10am.

That vote was postponed 37 minutes into a press conference hosted by Our City Action Buffalo, after the Buffalo News Editorial Board sided with “the critics” of the Council’s proposed plan, and after hearing from constituents that their actions were egregious and unacceptable.

Since that time, OCAB members and supporters have spoken with all nine councilmen and engaged and/or reengaged with thousands of city residents. The resulting map is one that everyone can be proud of - reaffirming a commitment to contiguity, preservation of neighborhoods, prioritization of equity, and re-establishing democracy as paramount.

“After reviewing all the testimony from the Council's public hearing, our team got to work revising our alternative plan to incorporate what we learned. As we began building people’s suggestions into our neighborhood-based map, we quickly saw that Our City’s residents know best when it comes to redistricting,” said Dr. Russell Weaver, quantitative geographer and Director of Research at Cornell ILR Buffalo Co-Lab. Implementing the changes resulted in numerous improvements to our INDIA WALTON original plan, including on the criteria that are most important to us: neighborhood preservation, equity, and compactness.”

"The people have been awakened. For so long we thought that change was not possible.

And now people know that even though we lost that general election on a sham write-in, we are not going back to brunch. We're not leaving, said former Democratic nominee for mayor of Buffalo India Walton. "We're not going anywhere. We're going to continue to fight until we get justice."

"This is a moment of respect. Respectfully, we bring our revised alternative plan. Respectfully, the Common Council should have responded. Everybody in the city has responded but our elected representatives," said OCAB ally and supporter Jim Anderson.

"After the 5/14 massacre, we sang kumbaya, we love one another and we are all going to work together. And to have this egregious plan on the heels of that tragic day is unspeakable.

We can do better. But we have to do better together," said Ellicott district resident Althea Davis.

"We are stronger when we are together. And the Council's map divides and breaks up neighborhoods," said Ellicott district resident Jessie Fisher. "It takes communities of interest and separates them. It takes voting interests and separates them. It doesn't do anything to help neighborhoods help themselves. It does nothing to empower residents."

OCAB is also recommending that the Council deeply consider revamping their structure.

OCAB proposes that the Council president be duly elected by all residents of the city of Buffalo, as was once the case. The organization is also recommending a return of at least one at-large seat to promote greater democratic representation in the city of Buffalo. It also reflects the fact that Buffalo’s population has increased for the first time in 70 years per the 2020 Census data.

OCAB has filed their first map and petition (with over 750 signatures) with the Buffalo Clerk’s office. OCAB also filed their revised alternative plan with the Clerk's office immediately following their press conference prior to the Legislation Committee at 2pm.

OCAB has issued several unanswered calls for the Common Council to reach out and engage directly with them on next steps in the reapportionment and redistricting processes.

It issued the same call again today.

OCAB's redistricting website (www.ourcityactionbuffalo.com/redistricting) will be updated with the revised alternative map and other pertinent information tomorrow, Wednesday, July 6th. Buffalo’s Poverty and Segregation Persists despite “Redevelopment and Growth”

Dear Editor, The July 3, 2022 article touting Buffalo’s “Other Story” of redevelopment and growth reads like an ad campaign

by Mayor Byron Brown and the local business community.

In fact, Buffalo’s so-called “economic renaissance” eludes much of the city’s residents: - The 2020 U.S. census shows that Buffalo has the secondhighest poverty rate among major American cities, 43.4%.

In 2016, it was “only” the seventh worst.

- Overall, 29% of Buffalonians live in poverty, nearly three times the rate of our nation as a whole. 35% of Black city residents are below the federal guideline.

- Nationwide, 64% of residents own their homes. In Buffalo, that rate has fallen from 45% in 2010, to 40.7% in 2019.

- Black students fail to earn a high school degree at a rate nearly twice that of whites, 17.6% to 9.3%.

- Although Blacks account for 35% of Buffalo’s population, they make up only 6% of the balance of the metropolitan area. 85% of Blacks live east of Main Street, the near-impenetrable racial dividing line.

That’s the “Real Story.”

Hey guys! Today I must talk about some things and get it off my chest. People seem to believe that I am too young to understand things or the world, but I understand perfectly fine. I know this world and country is pretty messed up, I also know some people are too, and this country and world is unfair. I am not too young to understand, and I am going to speak my mind.

I am going to start off by saying sorry to all the women in America right now. I am quite sure we have all heard about the Supreme Court overturning Roe vs Wade. I also know it does not affect women in New York right now, but you must think about all the other women and girls and how this affects them. Many women and girls who have been through sexual assault and abuse will be forced to give birth to a baby they did not want to have. Yeah, I know people are going to say, “well then just give the baby up for adoption if you do not want it.” No they should not have to. It is the woman’s choice and it should not be anyone else’s. Some women may have a medical problem that can cause them harm while giving birth. Some women may not be financially stable enough to take care of a baby, and to force a literal child to give birth to a baby is a whole other level of crazy and ignorant.

I know there might be some people who disagree with what I am saying but to be honest, it’s not a topic I’m going to change on. I am just going to say it, you have your opinion and I have mine. They said “because it’s what the Bible says.”

I’m going to stop you right there, respectfully. Not everyone believes in the Bible! Can you believe a group of men made these laws I’m sorry, but men should have no say AT ALL on a woman’s body! I just want to say again I am so sorry for all women right now. I am so upset!
