Leonard Brock Announces Resignation from Anti-Poverty Program Leonard Brock recently announced that he was resigning as executive director of the Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative effective in June.

On Dec. 12, Brock announced that he would leave the program effective in June. He is reported to have plans to revive Community Empowerment Opportunities, an economic concept that helps residents create businesses to fuel their neighborhoods.

“As opposed to running from poverty, I’m looking to run to creating community economic development opportunities for everyone to participate,” he said. Brock became the first executive director of RMAPI in June 2015

any Bills fans thought this might be Josh Allen’s coming out party. And it was - for him coming out of his mind. Allen simply doesn’t have the mental capability to be an NFL quarterback. Josh might recognize defensive schemes but does not know what to do. He can’t make adjustments and his bad footwork is inexcusable. Yes, Josh Allen is young and an outstanding athlete but has NO real knowledge of the game. I would have taken him out of game after he tried to lateral ball with 50 seconds remaining in the game. Josh took too many sacks that took his team out of scoring position which tells me his football IQ is very low and will be the determining factor of how long he will last in the NFL. The Bills Offensive Coordinator could not call screen passes or basic drop offs in the flat because Allen can’t make the simplest throws in the game. His only true talent is running the football. Allen should consider becoming a tight end instead of playing the most demanding position in football – that of a quarter back.

The Bills offense did not help itself by not playing running back TJ Yeldon and our best tight end on the team Tommy Sweeney. The Bills grossly overpaid for TE Tyler Kroft and should have benched him and allowed rookie Tommy Sweeney to take his place. Bills Head Coach Sean Mc Dermott seems to only know defense and refuses to see what’s right in front of his face that Patrick DeMarco, Tyler Kroft, Robert Foster, and Senorise Perry had no business making your football team! Those players were totally useless all season long. Bills offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll should be fired for not knowing that Duke Williams was the team’s best wide receiver and not starting him all season long was totally unacceptable.

The Bills had an outstanding defense unit but a terrible offense that could only average 17 points a game. Bills General Manager Brandon Beane created an unbalanced team and now must draft and bring in quality free agents to build up the offensive unit. He must now resign key players like Jordan Phillips, and Shaq Lawson. Beane signed many players to one year contracts and must be dealt with quickly. I think Jordan Phillips should be resigned and use Trent Murphy money in order to keep him.

Jordan was the Bills best player on the defensive line. Trent should be cut and bring in new talent to take his spot and the Bills probably are not going to be able to afford Shaq Lawson in free agency. Star Lotulelei should be cut and his money used to bring in a quality nose guard to stabilize the Bills defense against power running backs that torched Bills defensive front. The Bills now have a foundation and must build on it by getting a quality backup QB that can run and make plays outside of the pocket.

Pridgen Unanimously Re-elected President of the Common Council Additional Political Appointments, Reappointments Announced In addition to the historic inauguration of Barbara Miller Williams as the first Black woman City of Buffalo Comptroller and legislator April Baskin being unanimously re-elected Chair of the Erie County Legislature, there have been a few other notable appointments and reappointments.

• Ellicott District representative Darius Pridgen was unanimously re-elected Common Council president last Thursday. Pridgen said it was humbling to be in a position to help make Buffalo a better place, saying, “one of the biggest goals we have is trying to ensure that all ships that want to rise, are able to rise in the City of Buffalo.” Pridgen was first elected to his Ellicott District seat in 2011 and has served as president since 2014.

• Legislator Howard Johnson was again Council President named Chair of the Public Safety Committee for 2020. Johnson will also Chair the Pridgen Economic Development Committee, while serving as Vice Chair of the Finance & Management/Budget Committee and the Community Enrichment Committee.

•University District Council Member Rasheed N.C. Wyatt was appointed the Common Council’s new Finance Committee Chairman.

•Masten District Council Member Ulysees O. Wingo, Sr. was appointed the Council’s chairman of the Civil Service Committee.

Other recent committee chairmanship appointments included: Lovejoy Council Member Bryan J. Bollman, education committee; Fillmore Council Member Mitchell Nowakowski, Claims; Delaware Council Member Joel Feroleto, Legislation; and North Council Member Joseph Golombek, Development. David A. Swearing In of Barbara Miller-Williams Marks A New Era for City Comptroller’s Office

n Thursday, January 2 history was made as Barbara Miller-Williams was sworn in as the first African American and first Woman elected to serve as the Comptroller for the City of Buffalo.

Supporters filled the Council Chambers where the ceremony, hosted by Dr. James A. Lewis III, took place.

“I want to express my heartfelt thank you to those who made this historical victory possible” said Miller-Williams who graciously thanked all her supporters.

“Today marks the formal opening of Comptroller Miller-Williams, seated center, a new era. Our City of Buffalo has never is surrounded by family following her swearing in witnessed having a comptroller of African ceremony. PHOTO BLANC PHOTOGRAPHIE American heritage,” she said to applause.

As the Comptroller, Miller-Williams has led the Department of Audit and Control since April 16, 2019. Since the appointment, she has released the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), approved the issuance of bond sales for capital projects, provided information concerning the City’s financial condition and performance in record time, filed a Fund Balance proposal with the Buffalo Common Council and conducted numerous informational sessions to key personnel. “As a result of my efforts several best practice methods were made available to all interested parties."

The historic swearing in ceremony was in recognition of the renewed interest of citizens from all walks of life coming together to actively participate in city government.

“I appreciate the confidence bestowed upon me to faithfully serve as the Chief Financial Officer for the City of Buffalo.” Miller Williams stated. “As your Comptroller I will continue to be transparent and work with all branches of government to cohesively protect, report and strengthen the City’s finances.”

April N.M. Baskin Re-Elected Chair of the Erie County Legislature Unanimously elected by her colleagues, Baskin is the youngest person to serve as Chair Erie County Legislator April N. M. Baskin, D-Buffalo, was unanimously re-elected Chair of the Legislature on Thursday during the annual reorganizational session of the Erie County Legislature.

First elected in 2017, Legislator Baskin was chosen to serve as the Majority Leader immediately upon being sworn into office. She was again elected Majority Leader during the Legislature’s annual reorganization in January 2019.

This will be her first full term as Chair. With the departure of former Chairman Peter Savage III in April of 2019, Baskin was chosen by colleagues to become Chair for the remainder of 2019. As of last Thursday, she was reappointed to this leadership post, this time with a unanimous bi-partisan vote of all of her legislature colleagues. Baskin has made history as the youngest Chairperson in the history of the Erie County Legislature. As Chair, Baskin will preside over and maintain order during legislative sessions, and work with her colleagues to set the legislature’s agenda for 2020.

Narmer-Menes: Egypt’s First Pharaoh King Reaching back into Egypt’s antiquity, we find a great warrior king known as NarmerMenes. Heralded as Egypt’s first king, his accomplishments were unrivaled in the ancient world. One of Narmer-Mene’s first and greatest acts as ruler is the unification of upper and lower Egypt.

This signified the creation of the world’s first acknowledged nation-state (approximately 3200 B.C.) With his new empire in place, he proceeded to create what came to be the Nile Delta. Contrary to popular belief, the Delta was not a natural phenomenon; in NarmerMene’s time it was a veritable swamp, rampant with disease.

Narmer-Menes performed the herculean task of diverting the natural course of the Nile and digging a new channel, exhibiting a remarkable understanding of hydrostatics and hydraulic engineering and a degree of skill and precision that still astounds experts.

On the newly drained land he built a great city known as Men-nefer, the “good place,” which the Greeks later distorted into Memphis. This great city stretched over 22 square miles and is truly a wonder of its time.

Narmer Mene’s rule was one of glory and vast accomplishment. His reign was one of the longest in history, lasting 62 years. The name Menes means “He Who Endures.” Menes' reign was so prosperous that Diodorus Siculus claims Menes invented the concept of luxury.

Once Egypt was unified and at peace, he instituted religious practices and formalized beliefs.

White Activist and Group of Progressives Launch “Fund for Reparations Now”

Niagara Falls Community Continues to Mourn Death of Jesse Richardson

The Niagara Falls community continues to mourn the untimely death of businessman Jesse E. Richardson who made his transition December 24. Authorities are investigating his death as a homicide but at press time there had still been no arrests. Loved ones also view his death as suspicous A vigil outside his popular Richardson’s Fast Food on Highland Avenue drew hundeds of people as news of his death spead.

Services for Mr. Richardson were held on January 4 at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church on Calumet Avenue in the Falls, Pastor Timothy J. Brown Sr. officiated the service.

Well known and respeted, he often mentored the neighborhood youth and encouraged them to “do the right thing” with their lives.

Richardson, 69, of Niagara Falls, NY, was born in Niagara Falls, NY. He was the son of the late John E. and Sallie (Lyman) Richardson.

On June 11, 1982, Jesse married Priscilla (Streeter) Richardson in Niagara Falls, NY. Jesse was the longtime owner and operator of Richardson's Fast Food Deli on Highland Avenue. He loved his business and his community. He will be remembered for his mentorship and words of wisdom, and most of all, his devotion to his family.

In addition to his wife of 37 years, Jesse is survived by his children, Franco Richardson and Latoria (Albert) RichardsonPerdue; his grandchildren, Geria Hunt, Gerald Hunt, Jr., Leah Richardson, Kameron Richardson, and Kyrah Richardson; his great-grandchildren, Jayden Delbridge, Jeremiah Hunt, and Armani Hunt; his siblings, Jimetta (Johnnie) Williams, Johnnie (Mary) Richardson, Raymond (Jacquelyn) Richardson, Freddie Richardson, and Betty (Leon) Street; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his siblings, Maxine Hicks and Emmet (late Diane) Richardson.

Los Angeles,CA — As support for reparations for the descendants of enslaved Africans in America continues to build momentum across the country, David Gardinier, a Los Angeles-based racial justice activist, has assembled a group of like-minded White progressives to launch the Fund for Reparations Now (FFRN).

The objective of this ambitious Initiative is to support the work of the National African American Reparations Commission (NAARC) and its 10-Point Reparations Program (https://bit.ly/362xF3r) and to advocate for HR-40, the bill to establish a Presidential Commission to Study and Develop Reparations Proposals for African Americans. HR-40 is now working its way through Congress and enjoys the support of several Democratic presidential candidates.

As part of the launch, the group has issued a public apology.

Said Gardinier "...we fully commit to working within the White American community to tell the true story of enslavement, one of America’s ‘original sins,’ and seek to repair the damage and harm inflicted by this horrendous crime against humanity.”

PUBLIC NOTICE City of Buffalo 2020 Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice Report Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Home Investment Partnership Grant (HOME) and Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) The City of Buffalo Office Of Strategic Planning, on behalf of the Erie County Community Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership Consortia, has prepared an Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice Report. The Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice Report serves as the basis for fair housing planning, provides essential information to policy makers, administrative staff, housing providers, lenders and fair housing advocates and assists in building public support for fair housing lenders. The Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice Report also serves as a point-in-time baseline against which future progress in terms of implementing fair housing initiatives will be evaluated and recorded.

The Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice Report is prepared to satisfy the requirements of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974. The report is required to be completed every five years in order for HUD Grantees to receive federal funds under three (3) of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) formula grant programs including CDBG, HOME and HESG. The studied areas for the Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice Report is the thirty-seven municipalities of the Erie County CDBG and Home Consortium, the City of Buffalo, the Towns of Tonawanda, Amherst, Cheektowaga and Hamburg and the villages therein. The following municipalities comprise the Erie County CDBG Consortium: Cities of Lackawanna and Tonawanda; Towns of Alden, Aurora, Boston, Brant, Clarence, Colden, Collins, Concord, Eden, Elma, Evans, Grand Island, Holland, Lancaster, Marilla, Newstead, North Collins, Orchard Park, Sardinia, Wales and West Seneca; Villages of Akron, Alden, Angola, Depew, East Aurora, Farnham, Gowanda, Lancaster, North Collins, Orchard Park and Springville. The Erie County HOME Consortium includes the above communities as well as the Town of Hamburg and the Villages of Blasdell and Hamburg.

5th Annual Afro-American Historical Association of the Niagara Frontier’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Program The 15th Annual Afro-American Historical Association of the Niagara Frontier’s Martin Luther King, Jr. program will be held Sunday, January 19 at 3 p.m. at the Buffalo History Museum, I Museum Court.

The Speaker will be Dr. Gretchen Sullivan Sorin who will speak on “The Real Green Book.” Dr. Sorin is Director and Distinguished Service Professor at the Cooperstown Graduate Program, a training program for museum curators, educators, and directors that is part of the Dr. Gretchen Sullivan Sorin State University of New York College at Oneonta. She is also a Fellow of the New York Academy of Historians.

The co-sponsors for the event are Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Rho Lambda Chapter and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. This event is free and open to the public.

Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Program Sunday January 19 at Kleinhans

he Concerned Citizens Following The Dream Committee will present the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration program on Sunday January 19 at 7 p.m. at Kleinhans Music Hall.

Kleinhans will come alive as we celebrate Dr. King’s life and legacy with music, speech, song and dance. The theme is “ A Journey Traveled By Many, A Dream Living In All.” The vision is to continue to help build and sustain an opportunity to educate our youths about Dr. King and his works, while helping them to believe that they too, can do greater things than what he did.

Performers will include the Larry Salter Orchestra, Bessie Patterson and the City Wide Choir, The African Cultural Center Dancers, Psalmist Kimera Lattimore, Elim Christian Fellowship Choir, Miss Barbara’s School of Dance, Destiny Church Choir and others.

Twelve persons in the Buffalo/Niagara area will be honored with a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award. Awardees are: Madeline Scott, John Baker, Judge E. Jeanette Ogden, Bishop T. Anthony Bronner, Nadia S. Pizarro, Sababu Norris, Linda Pellegrino, Rabbi Jonathan Freirich, Officer Kimberly Beaty, Patricia Bozeman, Valeria Cray and Samuel Radford. All youths in attendance, up to 25 years of age will also be honored on stage.

Services Held for Mamie Lang Kirkland, 111 Years Old Funeral services were held for Mamie Lang Kirkland on Friday January 3, 2019 at First Shiloh Baptist Church. Mrs. Kirkland, was 111 years old when she passed away Saturday, December 28, in her Buffalo home.

She was the second oldest person in New York State, according to Gerontology Wiki.

"She lived a long and fruitful life, and witnessed many of the world's miraculous transitions," said a son, Tarabu Betserai Kirkland. "In her older life the world began witnessing her and her courage and strength and quiet wisdom."

Mamie was born in Ellisville, Miss., about 25 miles north of Hattiesburg on September 3, 1908, the second of five children born to Edward and Rochelle Lang. At the time of her birth slavery had only been abolished for forty-three years.

Kirkland's family fled Ellisville when she was 7 after her father, a Baptist minister, was threathened with being lynched.

She was a 4-foot, 9-inch spitfire, a living rock of ages who survived all manner of hardships with a forceful determination,” noted her son Tarabu.

Her journey was captured on the front page of the New York Times. It also inspired her son to tell her story in his film: “100 YEARS FROM MISSISSIPPI.” Since then, she has been honored by the Equal Justice Initiative in 2016 with their Lynching Legacy Award in New York City, and in 2018 receiving the Champion of Justice award at their opening of the Legacy Museum and the Peace and Justice Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama. Her story, photographs and oral history are on permanent display at the Legacy Museum.

Mamie was the living matriarch of six generations resulting in 158 grands and greats. At the time of her death, she was Buffalo’s oldest living citizen and the second oldest in New York State. At her beloved First Shiloh Baptist Church, Mamie was an active foundational member for over 85 years. She inspired everyone she met to be positive, and to use her favorite phrase: "don’t rush your life away, live it away with the Lord.”

LARGER THAN LIFE…..

Up until the day she made her transition, Bernice “Bunny” Jones, larger than life, was her usual upbeat, busy, talkative self.

She was fresh from a vacation in Miami where her beloved daughter Jaycina had taken her for her 63rd birthday.

“Jaycina really outdid herself” she said upon her return. “I’m so proud of her!” The best part of the trip, she said, was the deep bonding that took place between them.

When she returned home her son Wee surprised her, she told me, with a generous gift and “the most beauitiful card” she had ever received from him….filled with love and appreciation.

“All is well” was one of her favorite refrains. Indeed, life was good. And all was well in her world.

Her sudden departure – she passed peacefully in her sleep - came as a shock to a lot of people.

I was one of them. Bunny, my colleague and sister friend, always kept me “prayed up” and encouraged in good times and bad. We were in the trenches together…side by side. She was there when there was no running water. No heat. No money. No hope. She undertood the Challenger's mission and importance and she never waivered. In my darkest hours she would remind me, that we were doing what God wanted us to do..then she would rush over to Jesus Crusade for prayer and a miracle, which would almost always happen. The gospel “Stand” became our theme song .

When I was 16 years old my mother taught me my first lesson in faith. My beloved sister “Bunny” reinforced that faith decades later.

I use to think that she knew everybody in City of Buffalo!

The turnout for her Home Going celebration at Friendship Baptist Church on December 27 – over 1,000 people for her funeral alone - was nothing short of amazing.

Bernice Jones, our beloved “Bunny,” went out in grand style like the Queen she was. May her beautiful, giving, faithful soul rest forever in the Eternal Fields of Peace. -alnisa

Bernice "Bunny" Jones was born December 17, 1956 in Buffalo, NY to the late JC and Sarah Mae Jones. Bernice was educated at Clinton Junior High, East High School, and did her undergraduate studies at Jamestown Community College and Erie Community College where she majored in Fashion Merchandising. She always had an eye for fashion and would tell you in a heartbeat , "I have a Buying Fashion Merchandise degree!" Her career in fashion spanned 18 years holding managerial roles in stores such as Caren Charles and Casual Corners. She was also a recipient of many major sales awards.

Bernice continued her sales career with WUFO-Sheridan Broadcasting as an award-winning Senior Sales Representative. During her 10 years there she was the key to many business-people promoting and creating awareness for their establishments through media.

For two decades she served her community and expanded her sales experience at the Challenger Community News as President of Sales and Marketing. Her dedication, faithfulness, and commitment to the paper and her people was key to the papers' survival during difficult times. Over the years she became the face of The Challenger with her larger than life personality. She was a recipient of numerous community awards and honors including The Black Achievers Awards, Mary Talbert Men and Women of Excellence Award, and Roses Outstanding Award.

Whom shall I fear." She fearlessly served her community not only in the role of a sales representative but as a caregiver; earning the respect of senior citizens, youth, and The Town Gardens community. A woman of tremendous faith, she held dual memberships at Friendship Baptist Church and Jesus Crusade for many years.

Bernice "Bunny" Jones touched so many lives while here on earth. Her bold, graceful, beautiful ways radiated strength and positivity amongst her family and friends. Her legacy of unconditional love will never be forgotten. Well loved by her family, she leaves to cherish in memory her two children Norris "Wee" Robinson Jr. of Buffalo, New York and Jaycina Meadows of Alexandria, Virginia; two Brothers Willie (Pattisey) and Harry Jones of Buffalo, New York; three Sisters Clara "Neat," Fay, and Virginia "Gin" Jones of Buffalo, NewYork; two Aunt Anna-Jane McGee and Delores Jones of Buffalo, New York; one devoted Sister friend Helen McNamee Blair; and a host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and Friends.

The talented young media personalities were introduced to the Buffalo community (for the lovely Ms. Blackmon it was a homecoming!) by WUFO owner/CEO Sheila Brown during a launch party December 27th at the Acqua Lounge. They beat out three other syndicated shows that were pitching for the coveted 6-10 a.m. morning show spot. Sheila recalled having to have to make a decision almost on the spot! But Carol made their package the most attractive for WUFO she said. The lovely and talented Ms. Blackmon, born and raised here, is a Bennet High graduate and made her mark in radio locally before moving to Atlanta to follow her dream a number of years ago. “As a sister running a radio station I had to bring a sister back home!” said Sheila. Monday’s launch was “amazing” she added. Albright-Knox Announces First Northland Exhibition Open House:

Domestic Thresholds by Heather Hart, Edra Soto, and Rodney Taylor with Opening Celebration performances by Naila Ansari, Mani Mehrvarz and Curtis Lovell!

Albright-Knox Northland , 612 Northland Ave., will open in January 2020 with an exhibition featuring artists Heather Hart, Edra Soto, and Rodney Taylor. Collectively, their work explores how people build connections to others both inside and outside the walls of those structures we call home.

Visitors are encouraged to climb on top of and underneath Heather Hart’s life-size rooftop construction, unexpectedly situated at ground level within the gallery. Over the course of the exhibition, this interactive sculpture environment will host performances, discussions, community gatherings, and other events led by local artists, cultural producers, community leaders, and regional historians. Programming is an integral part of opening up this house—which is loosely based on Hart’s childhood home—to wide-ranging conversations and opportunities to share with one another.

Artist Edra Soto has turned her daily dog walks into what she has likened to urban beachcombing: collecting discarded liquor bottles. The artist carefully strips her findings of their branded labeling, and she plays up the simple elegance of the bare bottles by displaying them on decorative panels inspired by the painted wrought-iron screens that commonly adorn homes in her native Puerto Rico A series of Rodney Taylor’s paintings inspired by homes near his studio on Fillmore Avenue in Buffalo’s East Side complete the exhibition. Like both Hart and Soto, Taylor was interested in revealing the complexities at the heart of such everyday structures. In his paintings, he transforms the architecture of the homes into virtual frames, suggesting buildings under stress.

The opening celebration will also include the talents of dancer / performance artist Naila Ansari, media artist Mani Mehrvarz and master of vocal range singer Curtis Lovell. Exhibition opens January 17 from noon to 7pm . Admission is pay what you will .

Free Movie Nights Offer a Film Way to "Connect and Conversate” in the New Year 2020 ReelRap, a series of free movie nights hosted by outside the box, launches with a double-feature salute to Harriet director and co-screenwriter Kasi Lemmons on Friday, January 17 at 7 p.m. at 1272 Delaware Avenue.

Eve’s Bayou, Lemmons’ 1997 directorial debut – which she also wrote – features Samuel L. Jackson, Lynn Whitfield, Diahann Carroll, Lisa Nicole Carson, Jurnee Smollett, Debbi Morgan, Meagan Good and Vondie Curtis Hall in the plot-twisting tale of a prominent Louisiana doctor and his family. Jackson also produced the movie.

Fear of a Black Hat (1994) follows strait-laced sociologist Nina Blackburn (Kasi Lemmons), as she attempts to film a documentary on rising rappers Ice Cold (Rusty Cundieff), Tasty Taste (Larry B. Scott) and Tone Def (Mark Christopher Lawrence). Cundieff wrote and directed the hilarious, seriously savvy send-up of the early hip-hop industry.

Both movies are rated R and not advised for audiences under 18 years old.

2020 ReelRap is envisioned as a way for people who like movies and film history to connect, ‘conversate’ and maybe experience something socially diverse. Mostly though, I hope it’s a way to de-compress and have fun,” coordinator Jessica Thorpe said.

Weekend of Action: Women’s March January 19, 2020 We are excited to join in solidarity for a Weekend of Action on January 17-20, 2020! It is both the Women’s March weekend and of course the remembrance weekend of our beloved Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Both are in the Spirit that works to #UnitetheStruggles, that is the essence of Truth and Love, Justice and Solidarity, Courage and Peace.

This year’s WNY Women’s March will be Sunday, January 19, 1:30-3p.m. in Niagara Square. The Women’s March started in 2017 as women rose up in solidarity, unity, and anger after the election of 2020, immediately after the inauguration.

WNY’s Women’s March has had record-breaking crowds each year: first approaching 4K, then 5K, then ~500 people out in 65mph, gale-force winds (and that in March after being postponed from a blizzard). The wonderful marches in DC and elsewhere usually take place on the Saturday. We in Buffalo choose Sunday so that people are able to go to DC, Seneca Falls, or NYC, as well and still attend in Buffalo.

Our mission statement in WNY, established through consensus by women community leaders, is: The Women's March of Buffalo/WNY, opposed to all forms of oppression, seeks to increase equity and equality for women and all oppressed people by ensuring structural and systemic changes in our local government, local businesses and organizations, and within society at large in order to guarantee a woman's right to health, safety, and freedom from violence. We seek this regardless of racial, economic, or citizenship status; and value the dignity and humanity of women of color, women with disabilities, and lgbt/queer and gender non-conforming people, and everyone's equal place in the movement and in society.

Ball Is Life: Massai Graham Chasing The Dream M

assai is a 16 year-old sophomore at Tapestry Charter High School and a well-known local basketball player who is chasing his dreams of going to the NBA. The son of Rashida & Ronal Graham, he is the second youngest of their blended family consisting of six children. He has always been sports oriented watching his older brothers play football.

Over the years he has tried his hand at football, baseball and track but at 10 years old Massai picked up a basketball and has not put it down since. He has found a love and passion for the sport and hopes to go as far as he can to becoming a successful and professional player.

While playing with his AAU Massai Graham basketball team NEBC, Massai has showcased his talents with as well as in front of some very well-known and influential individuals of basketball. Even winning Co-MVP at the Pangos Jr. AllAmerican Camp in California and more recently earned the ranking of #52 in the country. While proud to make the list, he is determined and has vowed to move up within the rankings of top 20.

With a very humble and respectful demeanor Sai (as he’s affectionately called) has drive and hunger for the knowledge of the game that sets him apart. This young athlete currently measures up with a height of 6ft 7in with a wingspan of 7ft and vertical of 42inches. This past summer during a 7 week showcase Massai made US Today Weekly and ESPN’s SportsCenter for shattering the backboard with a dynamic dunk. The video footage went viral!

Known for his unmatched athleticism, defensive blocks and highflying dunks from both half and full court has coined the nickname #Bounce makes the combo wing and fan favorite game after game.

Always willing and open to learning every aspect of the game from other players, coaches and trainers further demonstrates his ability to be taught and his respect for others. Anyone that he encounters only offers up positive words about him. Often referring to him as a gentle giant.

Massai’s focus and drive goes far beyond basketball. His plans beyond high school are to study sports medicine in college. He understands the importance of education and that it goes hand in hand with basketball.

Massai loves to give back. He volunteers whenever possible to younger children who wants to learn more about basketball and has volunteered at school, church, and community centers around the city. Recently he gave away two thanksgiving dinner baskets and also participated in feeding the homeless during winter months.

Massai who attends Zion Dominion Global Ministries in Amherst puts his faith and trust in God displaying respect for himself, his family his teammates and his community.

Re-dedication Service of the Bust in MLK Jr. Park and Grand Opening of the Permanent “Making of a Monument” Exhibit

s we approach the 91st birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as African Americans we have much to reflect on; from slavery, Jim Crow and the Civil Rights Movement to the presidency of this great nation.

In Buffalo, we commemorate Dr. King with a park named after him and an artistic bust that reflects his fight for equality for the Black Man. The Bust has stood for 35 years and a number of community groups believe, to commemorate Dr. King's legacy, it is time to re-dedicate it.

The re-dedication program will take place at the Calvary Baptist Church, 1184 Genesee at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 18. It will feature musical selections from, The Buffalo School of Performing Arts, The Colored Musicians Club and Soloist Sirgorney Cook. The program will also feature speakers who were present and intimately involved with the Monument project 35 years ago as well as video presentations from Dr. King himself.

In addition, the grand opening of the “Making of A Monument” exhibit will take place following the rededication service at the shelter house in MLK Jr. Park behind the monument site.

There has been some confusion surrounding the monument and to answer the questions and correct the record, the Buffalo African American Museum (BAAM) Committee has collated an exhibit that lays out “The Making of a Monument.”After the program, there will be a processional to the Monument site and a Grand Opening of the permanent exhibit in the shelter house near the Bust. The exhibit permanently answers the question of who built the monument and why it answers the question of why the Bust doesn't look exactly like Dr. King and most importantly what it stands for.

Join BAAM and many city dignitaries who have already responded on January 18 at 2 p.m. and learn the truth!

Inquiring Minds Want to Know...

According to the Buffalo News, Buffalo Pubic schools overpaid one million dollars to charter schools. The claims auditor who reviews payments by Buffalo Schools did not catch an error in that the wrong formula was used to calculate the bills sent to BPS by charter schools. A million dollar over payment was made, that may not be able to be recovered.

Compare that with the treatment of Principal Crystal Barton for an alleged $20,000 mishandled funds now reduced to an alleged $8,000 mishandled school funds. A News article dated December 18 stated that the Buffalo Public School system is attempting to fire this historic Principal of McKinley over peanuts. Nothing said about incompetence for a million dollars being mishandled, yet severe consequences are given to this Black principal.

The media also reported that the decision to fire Principal Barton was not unanimous; it was opposed by 3 of the 4 Black elected School Board members according to legal documents.

Unequal Placement of Camera System for School Zone Speeders?

T

he City of Buffalo has announced that it will activate a new camera system to nab school-zone speeders. Effective January 6, motorists going more than 10 miles above the 15-mile school zone limit, will be issued a $50 ticket!

Cameras may be posted on utility poles, school or other buildings or a police officer can issue a ticket. So, if you are driving between 15-25 miles per hour, you will not be charged. But any speed above 25 mph, you will be charged.

Mayor Byron Brown stated that there will be a grace period between Jan. 6 and Feb 6 where those speeders ticketed will be given a warning instead of having to pay.

The city of Rochester had similar cameras installed but took them down because they were not cost effective.

The schools where the 14 cameras are installed include: Stanley Makowski School (2 cameras) 1087 & 1132 Jefferson Ave; Canisius High School (2 cameras) 1177 & 1236 Delaware Ave.; Westminister Community Charter School (2 cameras) 3125 &3130 Bailey Ave. ; Olmsted #156 School (2 cameras) 295 &302 Suffolk Ave. ; D’Youville-Porter School, 267 Porter Ave. ; McKinley High School, 1463 Elmwood Ave. ; West Hertel Academy, 311 Military Rd. ; Grabiarz School, 522 Military Rd.; School 61, 694 Kensington Ave.; Hutchinson Technical High School, 255 Elmwood Ave. These are the locations where the 14 cameras were installed.

I guess drivers don’t speed past schools in South Buffalo or other parts of the city! The majority of the speed camera locations are on the east side.

I hope this is not a newer and different version of the infamous “checkpoints” that targeted people of lesser means and in certain neighborhoods.

I believe that no one should speed past a school bus, but both the law and the penalty should apply equally to all schools and all violators, not just those in certain parts of the city!

T

here is a smorgasbord of Democratic-candidates seeking election to the presidency. Being candid, I will admit none of them have excited me with the platform of issues they pledge to champion, from the Oval Office. However, I will definitely be voting for one of them!

Immigration support, a high profile item, initially, for several of them, seems to have faded to the background.

For many voters, the potential for Social Security benefits to be reduced, is a major concern.

Which candidates plan to pursue having the money -- that was siphoned from it, for other purposes, many years ago -- returned and deservingly with interest?

(Side Note: Why does the Social Security Office in Buffalo have a bare-bones staff? Has a three-month wait, just for the initial appointment for benefits, become a widespread norm?

Two visitors from another state recalled that was their experience a few months ago.)

Recently, a 61-year old relative said the Unemployment Office told him the Federal government has mandated no exceptions are allowed for the extension of unemployment benefits.

Certainly, overturning that coldblooded Trump clan cutback - which snatched the State's ability for extension flexibility from them -- should be a front-and-center priority for candidates. Additionally, our area's Congressmen, Brian Higgins and Chuck Schumer must be urged to seek withdrawal of the detrimental policy. From the State-level, Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes hopefully can be an advocate for a reversal or a helpful amendment.

The clock has started ticking down for eviction of the occupier of the White House who continuously has demonstrated he only favors corporations and the wealthy in the US. By whim, bias, ignorance, unilateral actions and with arrogance he has reduced the stature of the position and the widely respected status of our country.

When Will We Truly Start Incorporating The Principals of Kwanzaa for Nation Building?

E

very year we see a major hustle and bustle around certain cultural community events. Here in Buffalo the idea of bringing a popular guest speaker from out of town will bring out vendors, musicians, artists, visitors from out of town, volunteers, religious leaders, community groups and even politicians with an energy and vigor that is unmatched. The evidence of which, is the fact that our two largest events are not only the largest events the Black community hosts here in Buffalo, but are consistently among the top three of their kind nationally in attendance. What would Black Buffalo look like if these efforts were emulated for the purpose of Nation building? Are we truly practicing Umoja?

It has long been identified that individualism and opportunism is antithetical to building the "village to raise a child.” Selfish, self-centered and self-serving actions are not the same as, "defining and naming ourselves, as well as creating and speaking for ourselves." The prefix "Self" in Self-determination does not indicate individual opportunism, works or successes. The focus of Kujichagulia should not be on "self " individually, but "ourselves" collectively. Which brings us to our next point.

Collective work and responsibility is a very specific and instructive phrase.

It lets us know that we are to take responsibility and do works, but not individually, not separately, not on our own but collectively. As mentioned before, the musicians come out for the cultural events, specifically the drummers, usually playing the Djembe, a drum from Mali which is infamously named after the Bamana phrase, "everyone gather together." If Ujima is our instruction, are cultural and entertainment events the only things we should make time to come together for?

During Kwanzaa 2019, the UNIA-ACL did a presentation at Rochester's Ujamaa ceremony. The title was Garveyism and Ujamaa. Marcus Garvey told us to, "build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together." Years later, we now have a day, a time we spend reflecting on a greatness that once was the question posed that day, "When do we begin practicing the principle of cooperative economics?" Not just to benefit individuals, but " to profit from them together”; " us “ as a uniform collective.

The principle of purpose (Nia), is relatively self-explanatory; "To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness." Simply put, coming together for the purpose of collectively building, physically coming together for the purpose of developing our community and publicly coming together to restore greatness. If we are not actively doing these things year round, we are not practicing Nia. Kuumba's principle is creativity. Far too long this has been misconstrued as art, music and cultural events. Digging a little deeper, this principle is defined as ,"leaving our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it." We know that our people influence the world when it comes to fashion, music etc., however when has creativity in building infrastructure been a focus of our community? Healthcare, transportation, education, maintenance and security are things we can use to creatively fix our communities. Architecture, technology and urban agriculture are tools to make things beneficial for those who inherit what we leave.

Finally, do we "believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle"? Most of us have yet to define what the goal of "our struggle" is. If eventually being accepted and treated better by the oppressor class through moral suasion is what you define as "victory" then you may very well feel we are on the right path.

On the other hand, the goal of "our struggle" according to the principles of Kwanzaa and President General Marcus Garvey himself, is a redeemed Africa and a united African people worldwide.

In an effort to unify Black Buffalo, the UNIA Div #433 has proposed the naming of Marcus Garvey Way. The public resolution will be held at C.R.U.C.I.A.L. 230 Moselle St., on Saturday, January 11 at 10 a.m. at the Black Buffalo Convention.

Dear Editor: How did we get this far off our African center of Consciousness? It seems it dear started a few years ago when we brought religion into our Kwanzaa Celebration. editor Dr. Maulana Karenga and the US organization created the African American Kwanzaa celebration as a non-religious non-heroic practice for our community.

Here in 2019, we have brought into Kwanzaa the practice of massage therapy dedicated to the “brothers” as an event to the cultural celebration. This act of blasphemy, which took place on the 5th night, NIA,(Purpose), was a total corruption of Kwanzaa, while the creator of Kwanzaa was in the building. What next?

May our ancestors rescue us !
