Shooting Victims Remain Hospitalized Four people who were among the 14 injured during the tragic shooting at a weekend house party remain hospitalized in satisfactory condition at the University of Rochester Medical Center according to news reports.

In addition to the injured, two promising young high school graduates were killed in the latest senseless gun violence - Jaquayla Young and Jarvis Alexander — both innocent bystanders the party. According to police, more than 40 rounds were fired over a several block span on Pennsylvania Avenue.

The Surviving shooting victims were in their late teens and early 20's.

Independent Investigation into Death of Daniel Prude The City Council has hired a law firm to conduct an independent investigation of Rochester's handling of the Daniel Prude case. For staters, the ivestigation has demanded that records from Mayor Lovely Warren, the police and law departments and council members themselves produce the material

by Oct. 2.

Council Names Melendez to Fill Vacant Council Member Seat Miguel A. Meléndez, Jr. has been selected to fill the vacant Councilmember at Large seat on the Rochester City Council. Mr. Meléndez will be appointed to serve until December 31, 2021, which coincides with the end of the term for that seat. The seat was vacated on August 27, 2020 and by Charter the City Council has 30 days to appoint a new Councilmember.

During a recent visit Upstate, New York ‘s Attorney General Letitia James Brought a Message of Healing to Rochester. Announced Lawsuit Against Local Landlords for Lead Exposure in Buffalo.

D

uring a visit to Rochester last Sunday New York’ s Attorney General Letitia “Tish” James brought a message of healing to Rochester in the wake of the death of a mentally challenged Black man - Daniel Prude - at the hands of police which was followed by days of protest and unrest.

The day before, she was in Buffalo where she announced a lawsuit against a local landlord for lead exposure predominantly in low-income communities of color, resulting in dozens of instances of lead poisoning in children due to the violations.

Buffalo had also experienced the shooting of a 60-year-old Black man with a history of mental problems who was shot by Buffalo police on September 12 which also sparking protests and calls for reform.

And in another tragic similarity both cities saw senseless gun violence over the weekend of September 19 ending in the deaths of innocent young people. Sixteen people were shot at a Rochester party resulting in the deaths of two 19-year olds. In Buffalo over the same weekend, five young people were shot at a popup party, killing a 23-year-old female and injuring four young men.

It is a tale of two cities sharing similar crisis and an empathetic, determined State Attorney General with one message.

“I am here to bring healing to the city… " she said during a press conference at Rochester’s Aenon Missionary Baptist Church, “to let everyone know my quest is for justice.”

She expressed her sympathy over the “senseless gunfire” that injured 14 including a 7 year old and killing two and denounced the “over proliferation of guns in urban centers across the nation.”

She revealed that she met with protesters to hear their concerns; sharing with them her own personal participation in protest marches for justice and against police abuse from the murder of Amadou Diallo and Sean Bell to Eric Garner in New York.

She offered her deepest condolences to Daniel Prude’s family. Last Sunday (Sept 20) would have been Prude’s 42nd birthday.

She acknowledged the “twin pandemics - Covid 19 and long standing inequalities” - that continue to divide us as a nation.

“I Stand in solidarity with the entire Rochester community yearning for positive change,” she said.

-Semblance of JusticePledging transparency, Attorney General James said Sunday that going forward, her office will now decide when to publicly release body camera footage of police-involved deaths of unarmed civilians to avoid a repeat of what happened in the wake of Daniel Prude's death.

“Poverty and mental illness should not be crimes and they should not be crimes that result in death,” she declared.

"Up until now the release of footage has been up to the discretion of local authorities, but this process has caused confusion, delays, and has hampered transparency in a system that should be as open and available to the public as quickly as possible, publicizing the footage, as soon as we have shown it to the deceased family," James continued .

She said that regardless of the grand jury investigation's outcome, her office will seek an order from the presiding judge to release the grand jury minutes to the public.

Under the new policy, which takes effect immediately, James says she will tell the public when her office opens an investigation into a police-involved death of an unarmed civilian. The public will see the body camera footage as soon as the family of the deceased victim sees it, she said.

“We will take into account applicable security, HIPPA laws and other privacy concerns, but we will move as swiftly as possible so the public no longer has to wait months and months before seeing video in the hands of law enforcement,” James said Vowing to “work together to make sure all voices are heard,” Attorney general James pledged that her office would guarantee fairness and be “ thorough and transparent as we can.”

The attorney general also announced that her office would have a link on her website where protesters could submit videos, photos, and testimony of police conduct during protests.

Additionally, she wants to consider changing the Freedom of Information Act so there’s penalties for those who abuse it.

Letitia “Tish” James is the 67th Attorney General for the State of New York. With decades of work, she is an experienced attorney and public servant with a long record of accomplishments.

She is the first woman of color to hold statewide office in New York and the first woman to be elected Attorney General, the top law enforcement officer in the state.

We are going to pray for not only our Mayor, but all of our elected officials. We will be praying for the men of our community who are suffering from systemic oppression in the job market, which leads to crime and as a result- often leads to situations involving police brutality. We will be praying for women of color who are mothers trying to navigate their families and at the same time earn a decent wage to support them. We will be praying for the leaders of our Faith Communities and Social Service agencies, which are at least occupied by 70% of Women or more.

Dr. Freeman Appointed to Executive Board of the Minor Football League Dr Richard D. Myles Sr. CEO & Founder of the Minor Football League has announced the appointment of Dr. Patrick H. Freeman to the Executive Board of the league.

Dr. Freeman, also known as “ The Mighty Oba,” is also the owner and General Manager of the Rochester Chargers Minority Football League.

Chargers Appoint Teddy McDue as the Head Coach The Rochester Chargers of the Minor Football League are proud to announce the appointment of Teddy McDue as the Head Coach in charge of all football operations. Teddy McDue is the founder and owner of WNY – LOC Foundation Inc, which works with at – risk and homeless youth. Teddy was the first player from Buffalo Public School to be named Player of the Year in Western New York history and All Teddy McDue Time Leading Rusher in Harvard Cup history. Teddy played three years on Temple University’s football team and finished his career as an All American student-athlete at the University at Buffalo. Teddy has been coaching football as a Coach for Amherst and Bennett High Schools and Erie Community College for over 20 years.

Teddy is most passionate about aiding athletes in building life-skills and developing good habits that help them into their adult lives. His work with the WNY – LOC Foundation Inc., has been his way to integrate life skills with sports and football players.

Black Livelihoods Matter! "Justice For All" Rally Calls for End to Racially Biased Discrimination at NFTA

BREAKING GROUND: Buffalo Erie Niagara Land Improvement Corporation (BENLIC) will invest $400,000 in constructing two single-family homes on formerly vacant lots on 149 and 159 Crowley Avenue in the City’s Riverside neighborhood.

BUFFALO ADVENTURE HUNT: The Buffalo Adventure Hunt is happening on September 26th. This team based competition is in celebration of Urban National Wildlife Refuge Day. Teams of 2 will compete for points at different activities to determine who are the Urban Conservation Champions, and win the grand prizes! Planning Board Tables Pilgrim Village Project: More Details Sought The Buffalo Planning Board on Monday temporarily delayed action on the new residential project in the Pilgrim village development. According to reports, board members want to know more about what the buildings will look like and the lighting at night. The board also questioned if current Pilgrim Village residents understood how they would be temporarily relocated. They gave the firm SAA-EVI and its architect two weeks to present their response.

ommunity members, activists, faith leaders, and advocates along with current and former Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) employees held a spirited in-person and virtual “Justice for All” rally outside of the NFTA Ellicott Street offices last Saturday to demand fairness and racial equality. The rally was also called to address what they described as overt racism and discriminatory and retaliatory Human Resources practices.

“If we talk about Black Lives Matter, policing and criminal justice reform, we also need to talk about the scourge of racially motivated economic injustice and that’s what we have at the NFTA today,” declared Jerome Wright, HALTsolitary Campaign activist and member of Elim Christian Fellowship Church.

Rev. Charles Walker, pastor of Mt. Hope Baptist Church and president of United Coalition of Churches Brotherhood, called on former employees to share their stories of being unfairly fired and discriminated against. Two high ranking African American men (number one in seniority in their divisions) and two women who were terminated based on something either petty or non--existent bravely stepped forward. Rev. Walker and his wife host The Community Voice Radio call-in radio show on WEBR 1440 AM, Fridays from 6-7 p.m. They have been profiling what he calls “The NFTA 5’s ” saga for the past several weeks.

“We demand that there be changes made at the NFTA,” said Mr. Wright, “ The higher you go up the corporate ladder the ‘whiter’ it gets.” Yet, he continued, NFTA It has a ridership that is predominately Black, Brown and Latinx people (over 80%) ; and a workforce that does most of the work (drivers, maintenance, custodial and other non-administrative positions ) that is Black and Brown people but a supervisory and administrative staff that is predominately - if not all - White (less than 1% minority).

“In this day and time we are calling for equality and justice, there’s nothing more unequal and unjust than an economic entity - a public authority - that does people of color - its ridership and this community, an injustice economically ,” he continued. It was pointed out that there were many others who had testimonies but were “extremely nervous about coming forward” for fear of retaliation “because they don’t know how far the retaliation may go beyond the NFTA. We all know how Buffalo is connected in some kind of way.”

“Clean up your act NFTA” charged Wright, “because we’re coming with not just a rally…we’re coming with a community that says enough is enough! This is just the beginning,” he assured.

Co-sponsors of the rally included the United Coalition of Churches & Brotherhood (U.C.C.B.), Mt. Hope Community Church, Elim Christian Fellowship Church, #HALTsolitary Campaign, VOICE Buffalo, Free The People, and Citizen’s Action. Also on hand to show support was Murray Holman of Stop The Violence Coalition and Pastor James of Giles Back to Basics Outreach Ministries.

Services Held for Hortense Butts Nash

A Mass of Christian Burial was held for Hortense Butts Nash September 22. The Rev. Stephen Lane, Rector of St. Philips Episcopal Church was the Principle Celebrant.

Mrs. Nash, a few weeks shy of her 95th birthday, was still mentoring and showing love and letting her life shine. Born in Atlanta, GA. On September 29, 1925 to the late Ruby Tucker Butts and George W. Butts , the family eventually migrated to North Carolina, then to Niagara Falls, and shortly thereafter to Buffalo. Hortense graduated from Buffalo Teachers College in 1947 and earned a masters degree in 1957 from UB. Hortense Butts Nash She married her longtime sweetheart, friend and confident the late Jesse E. Nash Jr. in 1951, an educator, civic leader and pillar in the Black community. A long time teacher, mentor and musician, she was an active member of St. Phillips Episcopal church since 1978. Active in numerous community organizations, she was the recipient of a host of prestigious awards and honors including the National Sojourner Truth award and the NAACP Medgar Evers Award.

Mrs. Nash made her transition on September 12, 2020 after a brief decline in health. She leaves to cherish her memory her children Jesse Edward III, George Raymond, Deborah Nash Franklin, two step grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

The Underground Railroad - WNY Connection

The Michigan Street Baptist Church standing at 511 Michigan Street, Buffalo, NY was often the last stop for fugitive slaves on the Underground Railroad before crossing over to Canada.

For the 240 years from the first African was enslaved until 1860, Africans ran and some escaped to freedom.

Freedom-seeking Africans were chased by their masters or bounty hunters. So the transportation of enslaved Africans to freedom had to be done under the utmost secret of conditions. The transport worked much like a railroad house and so it was called The Underground Railroad.

The routes from safe-houses (houses where fugitive Africans were kept) were called lines . Stopping places were called stations). Those who aided enslaved AFricans were known as conductors. The road to freedom, called The Underground Railroad, became widespread after The Fugitive Slave Act. One of the most famours conductors was Harriet Tubman, the “Moses of her People,” who guided hundreds of enslaved Africans to freedom ; many of them to a free Canada across a wooden suspension bridge located a little ways downstream from Niagara Falls.

The entire area of western New York was filled with stops or stations of This Underground Railroad. With the Continued Page 11

Community Partners Host Black Businesses Matter Workshops for Small Black- and Minority-Owned Businesses Three organizations have partnered to host a series of free marketing workshops for small Black- and minorityowned businesses in Buffalo, New York.

Buffalo Urban League Young Professionals, Community Action Organization of WNY and Dixon Schwabl will host Black Businesses Matter workshops beginning the week of Oct. 5. This informative and inspirational marketing series is designed specifically for small, minority-owned businesses and entrepreneurs in Greater Buffalo to help attendees increase exposure for their businesses through low-cost, effective marketing and advertising techniques while addressing the issues of diversity and equity in the Buffalo business market.

“The Black Businesses Matter marketing series was established to address the inequities in opportunities for minority-owned businesses that have crippled their growth for decades,” said Catherine Roberts, senior vice president of program administration at Community Action Organization of Western NY. “Unfortunately, the impact of COVID-19 has exacerbated these disparities and, according to Forbes magazine, nearly 41% of Black businesses are now closed due to the pandemic. This workshop series is a call to action to help minority-owned businesses remain viable, profitable and sustainable by enhancing their branding and marketing skills to better promote, compete and succeed both during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The series is designed for Black- and minority small business owners looking to increase business — from those just starting out to seasoned entrepreneurs and any Buffalo professional interested in learning marketing, advertising and public relations technologies that are affordable and efficient.

n Saturday, October 3, Black Achievers, Inc., will honor 36 outstanding individuals when it hosts the 48th Annual Black Achievers Virtual Awards Celebration. This week Black Achievers CEO, Herbert L. Bellamy, Jr. released the names of six special award recipients. Donald K. Boswell, President and CEO of Buffalo Toronto Public Broadcasting, will receive the Media Award. M&T Chairman and CEO René F. Jones will accept the organization’s Award of Excellence.

Tanya M. Staples, a Senior Director with Say Yes Buffalo, will be honored with the Mayor’s Youth Award. Juneteenth President Marcus O. Brown will receive the Community Service Award. Mrs. Karen Saxon, a music educator, director and performer extraordinaire, will be presented with the Irene Bellamy Musician’s Award. The Homecoming Award will be presented to former Buffalo resident Nicholas K. Fortson.

The 48th Annual Black Achievers Virtual Awards Celebration will begin streaming on Saturday, October 3rd at 8 pm on the Black Achievers website (buffaloblackachievers.org) and on WKBW-TV’s website (www.wkbw.com) between 8:00 pm and 11:00 pm. The Cold Spring Bible Chapel at 100 Northland Avenue recently held its first annual Back to School Giveaway Relief event for the community. Pastor Kenneth Simmons said the event, which drew upwards of 300-400 people, was also designed to offer residents some relief after being restricted during the height of COVID. The free bookbags were filled with school supplies, hand sanitizer and masks. Pastor Simmons said he was happy “Just to see the smiles on the children’s faces.” Midtown Bible Chapel’s biggest message he continued, “ is love, commitment and community.” He had special thanks to all his sponsors including two lontime friends Darnell Cooper and Jahan McDuffie both of Atlanta, the Afro Dogs, MVP, Pastor Giles and Back to Basics Ministries.

“A lot of people came together to help pull this off, most importantly my church family.

Together we were able to make this happen," Rev. Simmmons concluded. " I thank God for the privilege to serve…It’s not about the pulpit and it’s not about pay, this ministry is serious to us...it's about taking our people to the level (where) they know somebody loves them and cares for them, and be advocates for them so they can be advocates for themselves.”

And I think that kind of perfection has to come from a greater force than there is here on earth. “[Elvin Jones] For more the more than fifty two years since the passing of one of jazz's most revered saxophonists, John William Coltrane, from this life of this world to the Hereafter, there has been much in the way of remembering him and his iconoclastic impact upon the world of music and art.

Like his contemporaries Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington and Eric Dolphy, musicians and music aficionados alike have focused on his recordings and documentaries of his life mainly to enhance their enjoyment and appreciation of his music. Very little attention is given to the factors behind his motivation and what inspired fueled his eternal quest. The purpose of this writing is to elucidate and expand the understanding of myself the general public on the spiritual, political and humanitarian motivation of the man who has even been declared a ‘saint’ in some circles. There have been many great musicians and artists but how many have been nominated for sainthood?

The Saint John Will-I-Am Coltrane African Orthodox Church in San Francisco is a place where music is religion and the classic Coltrane album A Love Supreme- which he recorded in 1964 calling it his “attempt to say ‘THANK YOU GOD’ through our work” - is the church anthem from which much of the church theology and world view comes from the music and commentary of A Love Supreme written by Trane himself: “I will do all I can to be worthy of Thee Oh Lord.

Ohnedaruth is a Sanskrit word meaning “compassion” and was given to the group by John Coltrane’s second wife, Alice Coltrane. These Ministers of Sound shepherd the rest of us toward “Coltrane consciousness.”

Alice Coltrane on her album ‘A Dynastic Trio’ dedicated the first track Ohnedaruth which was the spiritual name that she had given to her husband.

John William Coltrane, affectionately known as Trane to musicians and serious aficionados, was born in Hamlet, North Carolina September 23, 1926 but raised in High Point, North Carolina. Picking up the E flat alto horn and clarinet before settling to serious study if the alto saxophone, he graduated from high school in 1943 when he moved to be with his mother Alice in Philadelphia where she had relocated following the death of his father and maternal grandfather.

The great architect of African-American Classical music (Jazz), genius and master of the tenor and soprano saxophones, he was the son of whose parents were very spiritual and dedicated to service in the church in which his grandfather faithfully served.

John's mother, Mrs. Alice Coltrane, Sr., was a fine singer. He was blessed to have them as his parents. His father played violin and guitar in his spare time, mainly at home where he would practice as much as possible.

John Coltrane came to Buffalo for a gig at the Royal Arms in 1962 when I was a sophomore in high school. We were considered too young to enter the club so we watched and listened from outside the front of the club which had a huge plate glass window. In the band were pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones.

Herbalism: The Lost Art of Healing

"Mother Earth's medicine chest is full of healing herbs of incomparable worth" -Robin Rose Bennett The Civil Rights movement guaranteed access to facets of the larger white society that had previously been denied to us. This included access to Western Modern Medicine in ways our ancestors never had. It is now normal for us to go see doctors and specialists to satisfy our medical needs. This has proven to be both a blessing and a curse. While having access to medical care for a car accident or broken bones is vitally important, we have become overly dependent on the US Healthcare system for chronic diseases, and it has been to our detriment. We now rely on prescription medicines which inadequately address symptoms of dis-ease while ignoring the underlying root cause. The result is that we remain sick, while “they” get rich.

During our years of enslavement, we had to fend for ourselves. There was no white doctor we could go to for assistance, for either minor or major illnesses. We relied solely on the elders in the community who had the knowledge and wisdom of herbalism to create an environment where the body could heal itself at the cellular level. And it worked!

For every ailment, illness, ache or pain, there is an herb that will ease, soothe, and heal. For every problem there is an herbal solution.

Herbalism is a practice that is embedded in the ancestral footprint of our DNA. Using herbs and plants for medicinal and healing purposes has been passed down through families and communities since the beginning of time. Famous Black herbalists include the true father of medicine, Imhotep, Queen Nanny of the Maroons, Dr. James Stills, George Washington Carver, and Ms. Emma Dupree. Social Workers and Mental Health Advocates Write Open Letter to Mayor Brown to Oppose New Crisis Mental Health Services Policy (To read the letter in its entirety go tothechallengernews.com)

Dear Mayor Brown and Buffalo Common Council Members: As professional social workers and mental health professionals we are writing to express our strong opposition to plans to use social workers with and/or within police departments, an intention announced by Mayor Brown on September 14, 2020. While embedding social workers into police departments and/or having social workers accompany police to mental health calls may appeal to the general public, it is ineffective, unsafe, and unproven to reduce police violence in mental health crisis situations.

As calls for police accountability become louder and louder, we do not believe that the social work profession, with many accountability structures in place, can effectively and ethically work under a system that is so pervasively lacking in accountability without jeopardizing the integrity of the profession and community.

Like police, social workers have historically been complicit in upholding and enforcing White supremacy and institutional racism, from refusing to serve Black people in early social service delivery systems, developing and protecting segregated systems, to mistreating and disrespecting Black clients, and implementing racist policies in child welfare, juvenile justice, the criminal justice system, education, health care, and other institutions. We the undersigned wholeheartedly reject continuing this harmful legacy, and refuse to be used by unjust systems to perpetuate White supremacy.

Mental health is a public health issue not a criminal justice issue. Mental health conditions are the only medical conditions that are addressed by the legal system and not the healthcare system, a harmful and outdated practice. Police presence during mental health crises criminalizes and increases the stigmatization of mental health, making those in need of preventative or crisis mental health services less likely to seek services. As we saw on September 12th, many mental health calls responded to by police have resulted in injuries and criminal charges filed against the individual in need of help. Twenty-five percent (25%) of police killings involve a person with a mental health issue. It is no secret that over-policing in Black and Brown neighborhoods and violent responses by police to mental health calls disproportionally injure, criminalize, imprison, and kill our Black and Brown neighbors. Mental health needs should be met by the mental health and healthcare system, NOT our incredibly flawed criminal legal system.

The forming of a behavioral health team within BPD is clearly a band-aid approach; a way of pushing mental and behavioral health issues within our community out of sight of the public eye. The current pandemic only exacerbates these problems. Therefore, we demand: 1. Immediate ratification of Daniel’s Law. Named in honor of Daniel Prude, this law would ban police from responding to mental health calls.

2. Mental health professionals should respond to mental health calls independent of police.

3. Creation and implementation of a Behavioral Health Advisory Council.

4. Ensure more adequate funding for crisis prevention and intervention-focused mental and behavioral health programs. Redistribute a portion of the BPD’s budget to local community-based mental and behavioral health programs and organizations focused on harm reduction to prevent crisis response in the first place.

Bills Squish The Fish Once Again in Exciting Fashion 31 - 28

My cellphone was blowing up with text messages regarding my remarks on my weekly radio show “Pro Talk Plus,” that Josh Allen is a tight end playing the quarterback position. I stand by those remarks on Josh Allen, but he is starting to come along with plenty of passes with touch on them to his receivers.

Stefon Diggs made him look very good with outstanding catches against an inferior Dolphin secondary. Bills receivers were wide open most of the day on crossing patterns that Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Josh Boyer was unable to make an adjustment to stop them.

Bills rookie tight end Reggie Gilliam: “The Dolphins were as they were on film and I’m getting comfortable with the speed of the game.”

Reggie Gilliam was my preseason pick as Buffalo Bills “Diamond in the Rough” player for the 2020 NFL season and he is already bringing in dividends for the team. A close second in my “Diamond in the Rough” is Bills wide receiver Gabriel Davis, who I followed during his last two seasons at the University of Central Florida (UCF). He also had a touchdown reception.

Davis : “I ran my route and saw Josh roll out and was able to move to back of end zone and give Josh space to throw the ball to the outside and I was able to come down with the ball.

Yes, Gabriel Davis’ fingertip catch in the back of the endzone was the same type of reception I’ve seen him make many times in critical situations for UCF. Bills General Manager Brandon Beane and Head Coach Sean McDermott have surrounded Josh Allen with plenty of high-quality receivers in order to be successful. Josh must continue to produce with the Bills schedule getting very tough for the next six weeks. The Bills remaining schedule includes The Rams, The Raiders, The Titans, The Chiefs, The Jets, The Patriots, The Seahawks, The Cardinals, The Chargers, The 49ers, The Steelers, The Broncos, The Patriots, and The Dolphins.

The Bills defensive line will be tested in coming weeks with the middle of the line missing a big body to assist in stopping the run. Bills backup linebackers AJ Schein, and Tyrel Dodson will have to tackle punishing Rams running back Malcolm Brown and Cam Akers. Malcolm Brown ran all over a tough physical Philadelphia Eagles defense.

Yes, let the Gauntlet begin with The LA Rams coming to town with a strong offensive line and running game. I see a very physical game at Bills Stadium and with All- Pro Corner back Jaylen Ramsey coming to town to cover Stefon Diggs , it will make for another good entertaining game. This will be a true test of how far along Bills QB Josh Allen has progressed, as a strong passing game will be needed to defeat the LA Rams. I have The Bills winning 28-27 in a hard hitting, very physical contest, with Josh not turning the ball over, and the Bills defensive front having to slow down the punishing Rams running attack which will dominate for most of the day.

T-Blue Jays UpdateThe Toronto Blue Jays come back to Buffalo to close out the 60-game regular season on a Homestand against The New York Yankees, and Baltimore Orioles. After losing five games in a row, The Blue Jays pitching must improve and with star outfielder Teoscar Hernandez returning to the lineup . Teoscar hit his 16th home run of the season with a crushing blast to help lead The Blue Jays to a 6 – 3 wins over The Philadelphia Phillies. The Blue Jays can now score runs again and must keep Teoscar healthy for this week and playoffs in order to be competitive. The Blue Jays were shut out and scored three runs or less in his absence. Hin Jin Ryu is The Blue Jays only dominate starting pitcher and that must be addressed in the off season.

Hopefully Blue Jays management will spend money to bring two more high quality veteran pitchers in for next season.

Despite many producers who have tried, this is the first story that Johnson could not be more thrilled to finally co-sign, granting the rights to Henderson to do the story. “ It wasn’t a tough decision to decide on Addison, we have a lot of things in common, we both have a love for Buffalo, he’s very strong in what he does, and in addition to that he has a lot of drive and quality in what he does,” said LeRoi. The mini-series will have a twist and tell the true story of the Brother’s and how they came to be. “ I think people need to know what was behind the scenes with Rick, his family , people in business …and how Buffalo influenced Rick,” said his brother LeRoi Johnson.

He said he’s gone through a lot of producers over the years and feels Addison, who wanted to do this project 15 years ago unbeknownst to Johnson, is the best choice for the project, “ Addison and I are on the same page of what the narrative… he’s got the talent to direct and produce this project,” Johnson emphasized, “I’m the glue for Rick James, there’s nobody in this town or on the planet that knows more about my brother than I do… Addison and I are going to be partners in this all the way. ” The filmmaker plans to bring the production to Buffalo, “The energy I get from here carries me on to the stratosphere and that’s where me and LeRoi are going with this project right here in Buffalo.

Like many community-based organizations, the University District Community Development Association (UDCDA) has been working hard behind the scenes since the pandemic hit. The staff have continued to serve the community from our offices at 995 Kensington Avenue.

Although the City of Buffalo has closed all city-owned community centers since March 17th, the Gloria J. Parks Community Center has continued to provide after school and summer camp programs in a socially distanced format from within the community center.

The center’s Senior Program has resumed since July with outdoor fitness and social activities between the center, the Rails to Trails greenspace, and Shoshone Park. The senior program is planning to move temporarily indoors to 995 Kensington Avenue, starting in October to provide small group fitness, recreation and hot lunches. To help support these programs, UDCDA is holding two fundraisers on Saturday, September 26th.

First there will be a Smoked Chicken Dinner sale at Kensington-Bailey Neighborhood Housing Services at 995 Kensington and Comstock Avenues from Noon to 4 p.m. This sale is drive-through, take-out only. There will be no pre-sale.

The dinner includes 3 wings, 3 chicken tenders, 2 sides, and a roll and butter, for only $12.

Second, on that same day, September 26th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be Rummage Sale outside the Gloria J. Parks Community Center at 3242 Main Street and Heath. Furniture and household items will be available to purchase and take away. All sales are cash only. All proceeds from these fundraisers will support the agency’s work to sustain affordable housing, business growth in our neighborhoods, and to serve our seniors and youth with educational and recreational activities.
