Kim Jones Appointed Permanent Finance Director

T

he Rochester region is well-known for its ties to former slave, abolitionist, orator, and publisher Frederick Douglass, who made his home here from 1847 to 1872. Aside from its welldeserved place in abolitionist history, however, Rochester has a rich and varied past that is alive with stories of notable African-American citizens who helped contribute to a more progressive way of thinking not only in Rochester, but in Western New York and the state as a whole.

•Asa Dunbar is said to be the first African-American settler who cleared land for his farm in Irondequoit (near present-day Winton Road North) in 1795.

•Austin Steward, a runaway slave who came to Rochester in 1816 and opened his own meat market on what is now West Main Street. Or Frank Stewart, who started the first AfricanAmerican baseball team in 1866, called the Unexpected.

(Frederick Douglass’s son Charles is rumored to have been a member.)

•Activist Hester C. Jeffrey came to Rochester in 1891 and founded a number of local African-American women’s clubs, including the Susan B. Anthony Club for Colored Women.

•Isabella Dorsey incorporated the Dorsey Home for Dependent Colored Children in 1917.

•Dr. Charles T. Lunsford, Rochester’s first licensed African-American physician, opened his private practice at 574 Clarissa Street in 1921.

•In 1922 Dr. Van Tuly Levy became the first licensed African-American dentist in Rochester.

•The city’s first African-

American architect, Thomas Boyde, Jr., joined the Siegmund Firestone Architectural Firm in 1930. Boyde was the chief architect for the Monroe Community Home and Infirmary and contributed to the design of the Rundel Memorial Library, the Great Lake Press Building, and the Strathallan, to name a few.

•In 1931, Beatrice Amaza Howard earned the distinction of being the first African-American woman to graduate from the University of Rochester.

•Howard Coles, who founded the Frederick Douglass Voice newspaper in 1934, was a noted historian, journalist, activist, and expert on the writings of Frederick Douglass.

•In 1948, Charles Henry Price became the first African-American member of the Rochester Police Department. Price became the first African-American captain in the department 30 years later.

•Kathryn Green Hawkins, the first African-American woman in the Rochester Police Department in 1956, was promoted to lieutenant in 1964.

•Dr. Freddie Thomas, scientist, inventor, biologist, and scholar, moved to Rochester in 1952 and is known for his pioneering research in genetics and plastic surgery at the University of Rochester.

•Internationally renowned, Tony Award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan moved to Rochester in 1970.

He still resides in Rochester, serving as Artistic Director and President of Garth Fagan Dance.

Mayor Evans named Kim Jones as permanent Finance Director. Jones has served as Acting Finance Director since January, and previously was City Treasurer.

The Department of Finance Kim Jones collects revenues, manages and invests cash, manages the City’s debt and controls its financial processing. As Finance Director, Ms. Jones oversees the City’s Accounting, Treasury, Assessment, Parking, Traffic Violations Agency and Purchasing units.

“I want to thank Mayor Evans for the opportunity to be the City’s Director of Finance,” said Ms. Jones. “The stewardship of the City’s finances on behalf of its taxpayers is a longstanding source of pride for our city and I am proud to continue that tradition and to serve the citizens of Rochester as a member of Mayor Evans’ team.”

This tribute to the late Sidney Poitier, who stars in and directs "A Warm December", pays homage to an artist who was a trailblazer for many of today's Black actors and actresses in the film industry who have followed in his footsteps.

Last Sunday Rev. Timothy Newkirk of GYC Ministries and the Community Action Coalition of WNY held a balloon release and “Remembering Tiara Lott” gathering on Gold Street.

The young activist minister and his crew are no strangers to such memorials, or “boots-on-the-ground” efforts to find missing and murdered young people.

Tiara, 22, went missing last January 2021. Newkirk and company formed a search team to find her. Her body was later discovered along some train tracks in East Buffalo. U.S. Marshals are currently looking for her boyfriend Andre Whigam as a person of interest.

On Sunday the family continued their call for justice.

One family member even expressed disappointment in the pace of the “investigation.”

-Remember Their NamesSince Tiara’s death in January of 2021, we have seen four 17-year-old girls murdered to date: • Najae Lanier 17 yearsold. Murdered on August 16, 2021, around 8:30 p.m.

She died at the scene on Page at Lawn Ave. in Black Rock. She was a student at McKinley High School.

•Lorinia Robinson 17 years-old. Murdered on December 15, 2021. She was shot on Lisbon Ave. and driven to Langfield Ave. and Suffolk where she died at the scene.

•Tyreona Wiley 17 yearsold. She was murdered at Northampton near Humboldt Ave. December 19, 2021. She was a passenger

in a car that was shot up after they had left a party.

•And most recently on January 25, 2022 another 17-year-old girl (who at press time remains unidentified by police), was murdered on Koons Ave.; allegedly shot and killed by two suspects. A 15-year old and a 19 year-old have been charged.

Two other tragic stories of note: The year before Tiara met her tragic end, Rayshionna Johnson, just 23 and the mother of three young children, was shot and killed on September 19, 2020 in the Jefferson/Glenwood area.

The year before that, Lakeeta Holloman, 23, the mother of a 3-year-old daughter, was shot and killed on Maryland Street Nov. 15, 2019 after dropping her 3-year-old daughter at daycare. The ex-boyfriend accused of killing her, Lamont Bryant, is now on trial.

-CrisisWe are facing a crisis. And we have to do more about it said Pastor Newkirk.

“Something has to change.”

For starters, he said, “we have to get a better perspective of at-risk youth” and the challenges they face. “We’re missing the mark because we don’t have a connection to them.

“Unfortunately we live in a society where individuals use weapons as a solution to any type of discrepancy.

And the weapon of choice is the hand gun, something that is easily accessible.”

To families of victims and local activists, the release of such data is just the latest reminder that violence against Black women and girls often goes ignored, and should be made a more urgent public priority.

.•The human race is of African origin. The oldest known skeletal remains of anatomically modern humans (or homo sapiens) were excavated at sites in East Africa. Human remains were discovered at Omo in Ethiopia that were dated at 195,000 years old, the oldest known in the world.

•Africans pioneered basic arithmetic 25,000 years ago. The Ishango bone is a tool handle with notches carved into it found in the Ishango region of Zaïre (now called Congo) near Lake Edward. The bone tool was originally thought to have been over 8,000 years old, but a more sensitive recent dating has given dates of 25,000 years old.

•Africans mummified their dead 9,000 years ago. A mummified infant was found under the Uan Muhuggiag rock shelter in south western Libya. The infant was buried and was mummified using a very sophisticated technique that must have taken hundreds of years to evolve. The technique predates the earliest mummies known in Ancient Egypt by at least 1,000 years. Carbon dating is controversial but the mummy may date from 7438 (±220) BC. •The first Great Pyra-

mid of Giza, the most extraordinary building in history, was a staggering 481 feet tall – the equivalent of a 40-story building. It was made of 2.3 million blocks of limestone and granite, some weighing 100 tons.

Black Health and Wellness is On My Mind Black Mental Health: Present: Past and Future Nationwide Theme of Black History Month

W

hen Carter G. Woodson established Negro History week in 1926, he realized the importance of providing a theme to focus the attention of the public.

His brainchild, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, Inc. (ASALA) is continuing Woodson’s tradition of disseminating information about Black life, history and culture to the global community.

The theme for 2022 focuses on the importance of Black Health and Wellness. This theme acknowledges the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.

In order to foster good health and wellness Black people have embarked on self-determination, mutual aid and social support initiatives to build hospitals, medical and nursing schools and community clinics. Clinics were established by individuals, grassroots organizations and mutual aid societies, such as the African Union Society, National Association of Colored Women and Black Panther Party, to provide spaces for Black people to counter the economic and health disparities and discrimination that are found at mainstream institutions. These disparities and anti-Blackness led to communities developing phrases such as “When white folks catch a cold, Black folks get pneumonia.” Initiatives to help decrease disparities have centered several outcomes, including having more diverse practitioners and representation in all segments of the medical and health programs.

The rise of fields, such as Public and Community Health and Health Informatics have led to a rise in preventive care and a focus on body positivity, physical exercise, nutrition, exploring other dietary options such as veganism and vegetarianism, and gardening. Black Health and Wellness not only includes one’s physical body, but also emotional and mental health. At this point in the 21st century, our understanding of Black health and wellness is broader and more nuanced than ever.

It is well chronicled that African Americans are underrepresented in the behavioral health field. Commonly thought of as being Eurocentric in nature, many black people eschew the idea of going to therapy as something for whites. This mindset has been changing in recent years with such celebrities and sports figures as Oprah, Simone Biles, and Charlamgne da God all speaking out in different forums about their own mental health journeys.

As our community deals with the effects of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, systemic racism, disparities in the healthcare system, and COVID, the mental health of black Americans is more fragile than ever. As previously mentioned there are some who are speaking out. But years before these and others, there were groundbreaking pioneers in the field of mental health that represented our community and whose work must not be forgotten.

Two such people who specialized in the field of psychology were Francis Cecil Sumner, Ph.D. and Inez Beverly Prosser, Ph.D., the first black man and woman, respectively to earn a Ph.D. in psychology.

Dr. Sumner was one of the founding members of Howard University’s Psychology Department and Dr. Prosser’s dissertation, “The Non-Academic Development of Negro Children in Mixed and Segregated Schools,” evaluated the effects of racial inequality and racism on the development of Black children’s identity and mental health.

Dr. Maxie Clarence Maultsby, Jr., M.D., is the founder of the psychotherapeutic method, rational behavioral therapy. This form of treatment incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and counseling to produce short-term, culture and drug-free forms of psychotherapy that produce long-term therapeutic results. He also created a method of self-help, called rational self-counseling.

Another pioneer in black mental health is Beverly Daniel Tatum, Ph.D., whose book Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria And Other Conversations About Race, explored racism and its effect on the American educa-

tional system. Dr. Tatum earned the American Psychological Association Award for Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to Psychology in 2014.

And there are others: Solomon Carter Fuller, M.D., Hope Landrine, Ph.D., Joseph L. White, Ph.D., and many more. With such a rich history the question that begs to be asked, “What does the future hold for black mental health?”

I believe that this is a question best answered by the next generation of our young people. The advent of the internet has allowed for the creation of many resources for African Americans, such as BEAM (Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective), the Boris L. Henson Foundation (founded by actress Taraji P. Henson), Therapy for Black Girls, and Therapy for Black Men, have all emerged as a result of the need for expanded mental health resources for our community.

How The Black Church Came To Be...

W

hen Africans were first captured and brought to America, some enslaved Black people were Christian. More were Muslims. But the largest number, by far, were followers of traditional religions common in West Africa at the time.

West African societies, the largest source for Africans, shared a belief in a Supreme Creator, a chief deity among lesser gods, to whom they prayed and made sacrifices.

Through laws and customs honoring the gods, the ancestors of one's people, and the elderly, West Africans sought a harmonious balance between the natural and spiritual worlds.

This religious heritage also included the use of herbal medicine and charms, applied by specialists known as conjurers. Further, they made music and dance vital components of their worship practices. Enslaved men and women kept the rites, rituals, and cosmologies of Africa alive in America through stories, healing arts, song, and other forms of cul-

tural expression, creating a spiritual space apart from the white European world.

Interactions between enslaved people and Christian missionaries (and other evangelists) led to the spread of Christianity among Black Americans. Many slaveowners initially resisted these evangelistic efforts partially out of concern that if enslaved people became Christians, they would see themselves as their owners’ equals. By 1706, this fear by slaveowners had spurred legislation in at least six colonies declaring that an enslaved person’s baptism did not entail their freedom. In addition, many enslaved people who did become Christians had to deal with restrictions by masters who forbade them from attending church or prayer meetings. To get around these restrictions, and for alternatives to sermons by White clergy asking them to obey their owners, many Christian enslaved people held secret services with distinctive styles of praying, singing and worship. These services were typically held in their cabins or in nearby woods.

Historians say the biblical story of the Israelites’ escape from Egypt provided a good deal of inspiration to the enslaved Africans. This was reflected in coded lyrics to some of their religious songs, or spirituals. In “Go Down, Moses,”

for example, the lyrics plead with the Hebrew prophet to “tell old Pharaoh, let my people go.” Frederick Douglass wrote that when he was a child, before he had escaped slavery, “a keen observer might have detected in our repeated singing of ‘O Canaan, sweet Canaan, I am bound for the land of Canaan,’ something more than a hope of reaching heaven. EAT OFF ART Artist Edreys Wajed Creates “ Better Together” Logo Buffalo artist extraordinaire, and co-founder of Eat Off Art Edreys Wajed, was selected by

the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres Foundations to design the logo for their “Better Together” fundraising campaign, which kicked off the celebration of Black History whose 2022 theme is Black Health and Wellness.

Each organization featured in the campaign has a mission that focuses on an aspect of Black Health and Wellness.

Hannah-Jones covers racial injustice for The New York Times Magazine, and has spent years chronicling the way official policy has created—and maintains—racial segregation in housing and schools. Her deeply personal reports on the Black experience in America offer a compelling case for greater equity. She is the creator and lead writer of the New York Times’ major multimedia initiative, “The 1619 Project.” Named for the year the first enslaved Africans arrived in America, the project features an ongoing series of essays and art on the relationship between slavery and everything from social infrastructure and segregation, to music and sugar—all by Black American authors, activists, journalists and more. Hannah-Jones has written extensively on the history of racism, school resegregation, and the disarray of hundreds of desegregation orders, as well as the decades-long failure of the federal government to enforce the landmark 1968 Fair Housing Act. She is currently writing a book on school segregation called “The Problem We All Live With,” to be published on the One World imprint of Penguin/Random House. Her piece “Worlds Apart” in The Nikole Hannah-Jones New York Times Magazine won the National Magazine Award for “journalism that illuminates issues of national importance” as well as the Hillman Prize for Magazine Journalism. In 2016, she was awarded a Peabody Award and George Polk Award for radio reporting for her “This American Life” story, “The Problem We All Live With.” She was named Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists, and was also named to 2019’s The Root 100 as well as Essence’s Woke 100. Her reporting has also won Deadline Club Awards, Online Journalism Awards, the Sigma Delta Chi Award for Public Service, the Fred M. Hannah-Jones co-founded the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting with the goal of increasing the number of reporters and editors of color. Global Campaign to Collect 100,000 Signatures Begins During Black History Month Betty Grant and Judge McLeod

Will the Case Against Betty Jean Grant Go to Trial?

Community activist Betty Jean Grant returned to court Wednesday to once again hear Judge Andrew C. LoTempio reject a motion from her attorney to dismiss the charges against her.

“The DA requested time to respond and in two weeks the judge will render a decision or pick a trial date,” said Grant’s attorney James A.W. McLeod. “If it goes to trial Mrs. Grant will carefully weigh her options and decide whether to have a jury trial or nonjury trial.”

Mrs. Grant is being accused of violating state election law as the result of an incident inside the polling place at the Delavan-Grider Community Center last Oct. 28.

“I still can’t figure out why they’re bothering to prosecute this lady when on film, you have at least one other person in clear violation and they do absolutely nothing about it.

Instead they’ve decided to go after my client.

“I just can’t figure it out,” continued McLeod.

"It makes no sense to take it this far instead of moving forward and attempting to resolve the issue.

“I find it a bit unusual,” said the former City Court judge.

Despite it all, he said the case looks good. On Wednesday Mrs. Grant presented some 50 letters of support from in-

Washington, D.C.: A global effort by ordinary citizens, scholars, community, and faith leaders has been undertaken to petition President Joe Biden to grant a posthumous pardon to the Honorable Marcus Garvey. Spearheaded by the Caribbean-American Political Action Committee (C-PAC), the first goal of this global effort is to gather the required 100,000 signatures necessary to elicit a response from the President. To do so, the signatures must be collected within a stipulated 30-day period.

“Our goal is to get at a minimum, twenty-thousand signatures from each of the five continents,” says Dr. Goulda Downer, C-PAC’s Chair. “We will ask President Biden to honor the voices of our global citizens and make amends for the 1923 unjust persecution and imprisonment of the Honorable Marcus Garvey.” Marcus Garvey’s descendants believe that a Presidential pardon will acknowledge, and begin to right, the wrong committed against him, and by extension, the global community of African peoples. Marcus Garvey’s son, Dr. Julius Garvey said that “he taught us to be proud of being Black and reminded us of the power and majesty of our African heritage. The case against Marcus Garvey was politically motivated and his imprisonment unjust.”

February 2022, which is Black History month in the U.S., will be the apex of the effort. .

This global exoneration effort aims to include individuals, groups, and organizations, within the continental geographic region. The expectation is to bring local, regional, and global awareness about the effort to collect the 100,000 signatures during February’s Black History month observance.

About Marcus Garvey: Marcus Garvey was an outstanding and influential civil rights and anti-colonial leader of the early twentieth century. His movement, which espoused Black pride and Black selfreliance, economic independence, and Black unity, garnered unprecedented support around the world. The impact of his legacy still reverberates globally today. In May 1923, Garvey was unjustly convicted of mail fraud in relation to the operation of his signature program for Black economic independence, The Black Star Line. With every prosecution of a case it’s the taxpayers money involved.

This case against Betty Jean Grant he suggested, aside from being “a travesty,” is a waste of taxpayers money.

Another Case of Buffalo Public Schools Wasting Opportunities to Help Our Children?

Dear Editor: I'm reaching out to share some info about BPS' decision to not utilize supports for afterschool programming.

•To date no afterschool programming for students in K-8 has been offered •BPS just recently agreed to allow virtual afterschool programming, but this is a stop gap measure •BPS states that transportation issues prevent them from allowing afterschool to start •Millions in dollars in funding, already awarded to local agencies will have to be returned if things do not change •There has been no significant problem solving by BPS to create an alternative Buffalo Public Schools has been asked to convene a task force to strategize, to no avail.

Snow Filled Shelters Unacceptable!

I

t has been snowing in Buffalo for as long as I have lived here and I am sure, a long time before that. It is a fact fact that un-shoveled snow will clog up bus shelters and sidewalks in front of them if no one removes the snow. Compound that fact with near zero weather for almost two weeks and you have a situation where transit and bus riders are literally sitting in wheelchairs or standing in the streets because the snow and ice filled bus shelters are inaccessible to them !

When the bus riders and the community complained, the City of Buffalo and NFTA had the audacity to state that it is we, the homeowners or tenants who reside behind one of these bus shelters, who have the responsibility of shoveling them out or maintaining them; much like the arrangement with property owners and the sidewalks in front of their homes. Are they kidding us? It is either NFTA, who erected the shelters or the City of Buffalo's responsibility to shovel and maintain those bus shelters, whether they are in front of a vacant lot, occupied house or an abandoned building.

The City of Rochester NY has a municipal law that has the city maintaining all sidewalks there. Maybe the mayor of Buffalo and other elected officials should take a look at that law and investigate whether that will be good for Buffalo taxpayers. And while they are doing that, they may need to develop a plan to incorporate the problem with the city's bus shelters!

Black Mental Health Continued from page 4 Lastly, to put in bluntly, we need more African American behavioral health professionals. While blacks comprise 12% of the U.S. population, we only account for 2% of psychiatrists, 2% of psychologists, and 4% of social workers. This needs to change. If we are ever to move the needle when it comes to stigma in the African American community, we need more black mental health professionals. Behavioral health providers of all types are looking for those who can work with our people in a way that mental health specialists from other ethnic groups cannot. So, if you want to make a difference that can change a person’s life, this may be the career you’re looking for.
