The Rochester Rams Pee Wee Football Team, along with their coaches, were recognized at the Feb. 19 City Council meeting for recently winning the National Football Championship for their division at the Professional Football Hall of Fame National Championship in Canton, Ohio. The team was victorious with a score of 35-0. The Pee Wee squad, which consists of 17 boys and one girl, were presented with Mayoral Certificates of Recognition and City pins The 18 players received a well-deserved standing ovation as they were recognized for their hard work.

"We had a lot of first-year kids. we had a girl who never played before. We had to start from the bottom. It was a trying year. We're really proud of the year, we started off from the bottom and worked our way to the top," said Head Coach Terry

Lashay Harris is the Democrat Party’s candidate for Rochester City Council- South District. Ms. Harris received the unanimous support of the Monroe County Democratic Committee’s (MCDC) Executive Committee members representing the South District.

Harris is a Monroe County Legislator currently serving the 27th Legislative District. She is the Career Pathways to Public Safety Coordinator in the Rochester City School District and previously worked as the Manager of Business Development for American Medical Response. She is a past President of the 19th Ward Community Association, serves on the American Heart Association Board of Directors and is actively involved in the ROC Against Gun Violence Coalition. Additionally, Harris is a certified NYS Paramedic, a licensed Real Estate Agent, an NYS certified Instructor Coordinator and possess an NYS teaching certification in Career Technical Education.

Women's Forum at the Merriweather Library We Are Women Warriors and Western New York Peace Center will co-host a women forum at the Merriweather Library on Wednesday. March 13 at 5:30 p.m. The forum is being held to garner feedback from the March 10th Women's History Month rally that will be held in Niagara Square.

All candidates, including women candidates, who are running in the June 25th Democratic Primary are encouraged to attend to discuss community issues and concerns. This forum is for community residents input and there will be no debate or formal political speeches on the agenda.

he recent Beverly Gray Business Exchange Center event highlighting Ms. Gray’s vision of business growth for her community, was a well-attended success . An open house showcased the services provided at the center and an iconic portrait in Ms. Gray’s honor, created by artist Edreys Wajid, was unveiled.

Her family was more than appreciative and expressed hopes that the center, located at 334 E. Utica at Jefferson Ave., bearing their loved one’s name, would indeed represent all that she stood for in terms of progress for her beloved east side community.

“I’m hopeful it (the center) will prosper and create opportunities in the neighborhood for small businesses and entrepreneurs and women,” said her nephew Dwaine. Terry. “Beverly was about community. Her dream was to help bring viable resource to this area. I remember her telling me what she wanted to see…i.e. banks, supermarkets, a new library… She didn't do it alone but these were some of the things she championed,” he continued. "My family can now go by and see a building dedicated to her…my children and grandchildren will be able to do the same."

Royce Woods, the center’s executive director, took it upon himself to learn all he could about Ms. Gray when he took the position. He also reached out to her family and the community to get a better sense about who she was and what she represented. Buffalo Catches the Wave as More Black Women Seek Political Office

ast year momentum picked up nationwide for Black women seeking political office.

This year Buffalo appears to have caught the wave.

So far 12 Black women are seeking elected office from seats on the Common Council to the Buffalo School Board.

Currently circulating petitions to run in the June 25th Democratic Primary are: •Jennifer Strickland and Veronica Golden who are seeking to get on the ballot to run in the Masten District •Tina Sanders, is the only woman running for the Fillmore District seat.

There are currently no women on the Buffalo Common Council.

Also: •Katrina Martin-Bordeaux is seeking to run for the 1st Legislative District, •April Baskin is seeking re-election as 2nd District County Legislator.

•Lenora Foote-Beavers is running for Buffalo City Court Judge .

•Vanessa Glushefski and Barbara Miller Williams, outgoing 1st District Legislator, is running for City Comptroller.

In the Buffalo School Board Elections, which will be held on Tuesday, May 7 incumbents Paulette Woods (Central School Board Member) and Sharon Belton Cottman (Ferry District) are running for re-election.

The first Black Woman Elected Masten District Representative To The Buffalo Common Council In 1957,Cora P. Maloney was sworn in as a committeewoman in the Sixth District of the 13th ward. She made history, when in the same year; she was elected as Buffalo’s first Councilwoman, the first Democrat ever to be elected in the Masten District, and the first African American to be elected in the district in twenty years. She did not have the party endorsement for her first election. She was re-elected in 1959. That same year she refused to attend the U.S. Conference of Mayors in New Orleans. Because of segregation she could not stay in the same hotel as other delegates.

She said, “I feel I would abdicate the principles of my group if I went to the conference.” As a result of her stance, Mayor Frank A. Sedita also refused to attend the conference.

Several months prior her death, Mrs. Maloney was endorsed by the Democratic Executive Committee for Councilman-at-large, making her the first African American to be endorsed by a major political party for a city-wide elective office. Mrs. Maloney expressed her political creed as follows, “I’m a feminist. Women are the watchdogs of civilization. It’s always a feminine voice which cries for better government and better social laws.”

Mother and Son Become Artist and Activist Team By: Alexys Swygert Most people know that Duncan Kirkwood does advocacy work in our community and fights to empower parents and neighborhoods. But what most people don’t know, is that his mother Iris Kirkwood is an artist who has sent her work to several different states. Most recently on Feb 22nd, Iris Kirkwood unveiled a piece of public art titled “On My Way” that was featured at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center.

Her piece spoke to a dark past of world transit and manmade barriers created to limit opportunities for people of color. From the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade to the Trail of Tears there have been horrible atrocities committed around the movements of people from one place to another. Iris’ work with the Underground brought nearly 100 visitors to the Underground Railroad Heritage center on their opening night including observers who had never visited an art exhibit to those who were seasoned art critics.

Duncan, who attended a Historically Black College, said that “besides being proud of my mother, this exhibit and venue were important to me because Harriett Tubman is my favorite historical freedom fighter.

Not only did she resist the injustice and escape, but she went back to rescue others and show them the way to freedom.”

In Councilmember Gray's first term as an elected official, she made her mark on the city as being outspoken as it relates to political, economic, and social injustice in the way government delivers services. She was unconventional based on her natural ability to plan, develop, and implement projects. Councilmember Gray established an open door policy in her first year making her the most publicly accessible member in local government, setting her apart from her colleagues.

The once commercially vibrant Jefferson Avenue was the focus of her economic redevelopment plans. Ms. Gray secured 3.5 million dollars to design and construct a stateof-the-art Telecommunication Center as an anchor tenant for Jefferson Avenue. The historic Apollo Theater property now houses The Buffalo Municipal Communications Center, Public Education and Government (PEG channels).

Ms. Gray won re-election in 1999. As an At-Large member, In 2000, Ms. Gray was elected to the State Democratic Judicial Committee. She was the first woman to run for Mayor in Buffalo's history, and the first in opposition to an incumbent Mayor in 2001.

Her humanitarian activities were extensive. She worked with community groups and block clubs from across the city. She initiated the dialogue that led to the building of the 6th Precinct in the forgotten African American community.

She was a member of many social, civil, and political groups.

Ms. Gray was a member of the Metropolitan United Methodist Church. She participated in the re-enactment of the Slave Crossing of the Niagara River to Freedom that is sponsored annually by the Buffalo Quarters Historical Society. She was Chaplain of the Harriet Tubman 300s; a group whose mandate is to mark historical sites used by runaway slaves.

One of her favorite sayings was "To God be the Glory!"

She made her transition on Feb. 18, 2004.

Patricia A. Elliott-Patton Announces Her Candidacy for the Buffalo Board of Education East District Seat Patricia A. Elliott-Patton has formally announced her candidacy for the Buffalo Board of Education East District seat.

“As a parent in this district it is and has been my earnest effort to do everything in my power to make sure that I do my part to improve Buffalo Public Schools for all children,” stated Ms. Elliott-Patton. “As a parent, I have been an active participant in helping to shape our district and change the narrative of it from a failing district to a district in good standing. As much as I've done already, I'm willing to do more to make our schools the best that they can possibly be for our children. “ Among her many accomplishments as a parent leader, she has served as a parent facilitator/PTO President; helped to make sure the Buffalo Public Schools had after school programming and an increased number of parent centers; and was responsible for getting the district to approve funding for the Youth Risk Behavior survey to identify children in crisis to get the services they need.

“Our children deserve to have a fighter on the ground for them.

Someone who understands the process,” she concluded. “Someone who has been at the decision-making tables and have been successful in getting equitable education outcomes for children and families that work.”

Macedonia Holds Installation Service for Rev. Julian Cook, M.Div.

T

he Installation Service of Rev. Julian Armand Cook, Pastor Elect of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, 237 East North St. was held on Sunday, February 17.

Guest Preacher for the service was Rev. Miniard Culpepper, Sr. Pastor of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Boston, MA. The Reverend Cook, a native of Chicago’s South Side, is an ordained Baptist clergyman, sought-after speaker, writer, educator and public thinker.

He is a graduate of Houghton College ('13). There he majored in Music and Biblical Studies and minored in African American Studies. In April of 2013, Cook was named to "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges."

Rev. Cook is a classically trained baritone vocalist whose gifts have afforded him a number of opportunities, including performing for notable figures like Rev. Jesse L. Jackson and Congressman John Lewis. In May 2009, Cook was named a U.S. Presidential Scholar of the Arts by President Barack Obama— the nation’s highest honor that can be awarded pre-collegiate artists. As a result, he debuted in concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. From 2014-2018, Cook served as the Senior Pastor of the historic St. Mark Congregational Church, United Church of Christ of Boston, MA. Founded in 1895, St. Mark is the city's oldest Black Congregational Church.

In May 2016 Rev. Cook graduated with a Master of Divinity degree (magna cum laude) from Boston University (BU) School of Theology, where he was awarded a full scholarship as a Dean’s Fellow and Mary McLeod Bethune Scholar.

Most recently, he was appointed the Director of the Houghton College Bethel program in Buffalo, NY – an Associate of Arts degree program providing underserved students a low-cost, high-quality college education that promotes the intellectual, moral and spiritual development of a cadre of emerging leaders who are academically excellent and spiritually rooted, locally connected and globally minded, socially aware and courageously creative. He is also a Ph.D. student in Religion and Social Ethics at Drew University.

Rev. Cook is unfathomably privileged to be the husband of Mrs. Sirgourney Cook, a gifted opera singer and teacher. They reside in Buffalo, NY.

The Straight Path

Now that we know that submission (Islam) did not start 1500 hundred years ago, how do we get around the misconception that Islam is an Arab religion? (Surah 26:192-199) tells us that the Quran is in the ancient scriptures. (Surah 46:12) states that the Quran is simply the Torah in Arabic. Within this verse in Arabic, Moses is referred to as an Imam but you will find that in many English translations, the word Imam is not used.

We are constantly told that the Prophet had the Quran in one hand and a sword in the other however, this is a lie perpetuated by our own people due to the lack of knowledge. Yes, we were enslaved by the Arabs but at that time we were disobedient idolaters and every other evil thing you can think of including disregarding the direct words of God. (Surah3:187). (Surah 33:2627) shows that God gave other people power over us. All those countries that they currently occupy from Egypt to Libya and so on were where we previously resided. In (Surah 10:84), Moses is saying if you are (Muslims) rely on Allah. The Arabic word is there because of what is said in (Surah 14:4). (Surah 6:83-90) is very significant as it states that the Prophet Muhammad should follow the guidance of the Messengers who were before but almost all the practices that we see today are contrary. The reason why Islam nowadays appears to be an Arab religion is because Arab culture is wrongly integrated into the religion changing the intentions of the straight path provided by the Most High.

At Paul Robeson Theatre

World Premiere “The Sidewalk Stageplay” Based off a spoken word piece by Edreys Wajed The Paul Robeson Theatre at the African American Cultural Center will produce the World Premiere show “The Sidewalk Stageplay” written by Edreys Wajed and Paulette D. Harris. The Sidewalk Stageplay will be directed by Harris who last directed the PRT show “Native Son”and last season’s double Artie Award winning production “Skeleton Crew”.

Edreys Wajed is a Buffalo based creative entrepreneur.

He has transitioned through several crafts and artistic media throughout his life, working as a visual artist, jewelry maker, craftsman, musician, graphic designer and educator. Wajed was born and raised in Buffalo, coming from a family of multifaceted artisans His father was a jeweler and craftsman, and his mother would hand sew the family’s clothing. It wasn’t long before Wajed began to develop his own creative talents.

His work has been exhibited in group shows at the Main Street Gallery, SUNY Buffalo State and the Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology. His solo exhibition, White Lines Matter, was featured at the Western New York Book Arts Center in 2017.

Wajed has also completed public works projects. In collaboration with the Albright Knox Art Gallery and NFTA Metro, Wajed participated in the completion of the FreeEdreys Wajed dom Wall at the corner of Michigan Ave. and East Ferry Street along with three other talented artists in 2017.

When it comes to his approach to his life, his art, and all his pursuits, Wajed’s motto is simple: “Creativity is my neighbor, I live by it!”

Artistic Director Paulette D. Harris is eager for you to be part of this creative work.

She is known for her more than thirty years work in theatre, nineteen years in television, coordinator of the Annual Pine Grill Jazz Reunion, coordinator of the August Wilson Monologue Competition, local Film Casting Director and Project Manager for Get Fokus’d Productions. The Sidewalk Stageplay where life and death fight, where wrong confronts right, where darkness meets light, what happens when the lights go down? When you think nobody is watching?

Black Expo Rescheduled for March 10th The Community Health Center of Niagara will present Black Expo 2019, an Entrepreneurial Extravaganza in celebration of Black History Month. The event was rescheduled due to inclimate weather to Sunday March 10 at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, 825 Depot West in Niagara Falls N.Y. from 1 – 5 p.m.

Team Hutch Hosts its 4th Annual Science Fair at Burchfield Penney Art Center The Willie Hutch Jones Educational and Sports Programs (WHJESP) will host its 4th Annual Science Fair sponsored by General Motors Tonawanda Engine Plant on Saturday March 9 from 12 -3 p.m. at Burchfield Penney Art Center ,1300 Elmwood Ave. The 15 year old program offers Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) curriculum. The purpose of the WHJESP Science Fair is to provide possibilities of guided research and experimentation to offer an even playing filed for under-resourced students. For the grand opening of the Beverly Gray Business Exchange Center a special portrait of the community Icon was unveiled in her honor. Executive Director Royce Woods selected artist Edreys Wajed for the portrait. “We selected Edreys because of his native roots to the community" said woods. I Love the Portrait…I find it motivating walking into the center and seeing her watching over the work we do on Jefferson Avenue,” he continued. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to her memory and legacy via my creative talent," said the artist It’s partly what I’m here for,” In our q&a Wajed talked about creating this special artistic rendering.

What was it like for you painting her?

The image I rendered, was actually my second take on her likeness.

Originally the family provided me with a different photo. There were two that I was working from, both seemed to be from a photoshoot on the steps of City Hall.

When I was younger, I’d always admire her gracefulness. Whether on the news or in the paper, she always had this powerful, professional elegance and pride.

Did you learn about her before you painted her?

I definitely knew of her before the opportunity to paint her came about. There are just some names that float about in our community, where if you don’t already know them, the chatter about them makes you want to get to know them. She was one of the those names and personalities.

What did you want to capture in the rendition of her photo?

In working on the portrait, my approach was to capture her power, grace, elegance and an expression of pride. That was what I wanted to speak from the canvas.

The family’s decision to go with the second photo was absolutely the best call. It’s important that the family’s input was considered as to how they wanted her to be remembered and captured in a painting.

What’s your hope for people’s reaction when they see the piece?

My hope is that people first recognize Beverly Gray’s strong posture, poise and look of hope and happiness on her face. Secondly I’d like to think that if they’ve seen the Freedom Wall prior to visiting the Business Center, that a connection is made between Ms. Gray and the contributions and selflessness of the 28 dignitaries on the wall. I painted her with a similar approach to my interpretations of Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, W.E.B. Dubois and others.

What’s Up Next?

I’m included in a 15 artist portraiture exhibition that opens March 8 through June 2 at Burchfield Penney Art Center.

The show really is incredible and jaw-dropping.

On Saturday March 2 the community came out in style for two sold out screenings of AK Reed Films World Premier of “Hunger Pangs” at the Tralf. “Hunger Pangs” is the latest film release shot and directed by Amire Reed, written by Duce King and produced

by John Stover. The three longtime friends who hail from Buffalo’s east side are making major strides with this new successful film project comprised of three short films (Single Mother, Marcus & Jawaun and Angel) that dives deep into the social issues and challenges of inner city life. The film heads out on tour this month for more screenings in Atlanta, Charlotte N.C., Maryland and Chicago.

First Black Achievers Black History Scholarship Luncheon

lack Achievers, Inc., along with Uniland Development Company and Belmont Management Co., Inc., recently held their first Black History Scholarship Luncheon.

Herbert L. Bellamy, CEO of Black Achievers, Inc. & Dr. Catherine Collins presented “Future Black Achiever certificates to 20 students from Sweet Home High School, Emerson School of Hospitality and Riverside Institute of Technology. Students also won door prizes which included a cell phone, computer tablet, and a sports bag.

The luncheon started out with Aja Ray a student at Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

Speakers included, Dr. Dan Hocoy- SUNY Erie President Laura Zaepfel- Uniland Senior Vice President Caleb Hutchins-Student of Park School of Buffalo-“The Current status of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dream” Noah Hutchins- Student of Park School of Buffalo-“Why I kneel” Dr. Catherine Collins, a member of the New York State Board of Regents, is the chairperson of the Erma D. Robinson Educational Incentive Award fund & Black Achievers Scholarship committee which annually provides scholarships to graduating seniors from area high schools. With ongoing support and commitment from Uniland Development Company and Belmont Management Company, we have awarded over $30,000.00 in scholarships to Western New York high school students in the past 11 years. The scholarship fund is one of the projects financed by Black Achievers, Inc. with proceeds from the annual Black Achievers Awards Banquet.

Black Achievers, Inc. will be hosting the 47th Annual Black Achievers Awards Banquet. The primary purpose for the awards event is to honor outstanding individuals and show the community the variety and quality of achievements of African Americans in Western New York. Images are powerful in our society, and this event highlights inspiring stories of personal, professional and community achievements. Over the past 46 years, Black Achievers, Inc. has honored more than 2,500 outstanding individuals.

I’m very excited to share the story of a courageous singer and songwriter who rewrote the lyrics to her life by the grace of God and the help of an Elder from Her Church ... leading her to a path of recovery from an opioid addiction - straight into the arms of her soulmate.

Put your hands together {clap} and welcome to the page (stage) as I introduce to you the journey of my featured guest Black Rose {applause} !

Born In Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic to a Haitian mother and Dominican father. the youngest of seven, three girls and four boys ... her birth name is Nicole “Cole” Walker. She was brought to America when She was just 5 years old.

Nicole gained her early education at BUILD Academy, and graduated from Hutch Tech High School.

Black Rose is her stage name. A mother of one {Naliyah 12yrs old), Cole, at one point, like most of us, lost her way. It was around the tender age of 22 when she became heavily addicted to pain medication in 2009 which was prescribed by her doctor due to a liver illness. A year had gone by and she indulged in “popping pills” otherwise known as a term of drug abuse.

Starting out singing in the church, Cole had separated her connection to the Most High during the course of her battle. Still attending services here and there she was assigned to an Elder, who went above and beyond the call of duty .

Black Rose explains how the woman was on her like “white on rice." When asked by Miss Mary (who’s no longer with us), if she was tired of being tired ... Cole’s answer was yes. She was instructed to get a bag together headed for Rehab.

Upon completion and now released from the program, Black Rose spoke of how she was standing at a bus stop without a jacket literally freezing.when she was approached by her now husband (Chief), who at that time appeared to be her knight in shining armor. Seeing this damsel in distress, the gentleman pulled his car over to offer her some heat and the coat off his back ....Chivalry is not dead !!

He continued to meet her at the same bus stop everyday, eventually gaining her trust. Just as Miss Mary, Cole finally revealed to Chief her past conditions and how it was still a constant battle, on top of reoccurring nightmares and awkward sleeping patterns.

Appreciating her honesty, he inquired about her singing abilities she’d mentioned to him from her church background at State Tabernacle and expressed an interest in hearing what she was working with. To his surprise he liked what he heard. Cole recalls a time where she was a child she and her mom would sing together. Her mother, who also has a beautiful, strong voice, encouraged Black Rose to never let the gift her of vocals slip away.

Bringing her into his group consisting of himself and another male artist {Christian} called “Black Rose Familia” it was pretty much history from there. Knowing about her odd sleeping habits he was willing to stay up sleepless nights with her composing music ... later on down the line writing the lyrics performed by the both of them at their wedding ceremony. Nicole is 10 years clean and going strong.

This young lady has performed at Milkies, Imagine, 2017’ Juneteenth of Buffalo on the Edutainment Stage with Fellow songstress Kenya Davis and was also a featured artist in one of my “CITYWIDE YOUTH OPEN MIC’S” that same year.

So be on the look out for this amazing woman and her soulful sounds in the future ... I had the pleasure of listening to a live snippet of her upcoming single Dream Chaser on BlogTalk Radio’s Take A Solar Moment w/Solar, the Communities Daughter and when I say it’s full of passion, grit & soul ___ please believe me !!!!!!!!

WUFO Radio Hosts Community Town Hall Meeting to Discuss Upcoming Election But None of the Current Council Members Show Up

ower 96.5 Mix 1080 WUFO Radio presented an on-air “Community Town Hall Meeting” at Northland Workforce Training Center, 683 Northland Ave. a few weeks ago, hosted by talk show personalities from Buffalo on Fire, HOPE Broadcast, and The Community Hour programs.

The Community Town Hall provided a forum for candidates to answer questions, share their platforms and reasons why voters should support them.

However despite a successful turnout and exchange of information, the absence of current Council Members running for re-election was raised last week on the Community Hour talk show.

Only one incumbent running for re-election in the political arena showed up during the entire 3-hour broadcast, County Legislator for the 2nd District April Baskin.

None of the incumbents seeking re-election to the Common Council showed up.

“It shows their arrogance” and the fact that they take the community for granted, said co-host Warren Galloway. “Not one (with the exception of Baskin) showed up to say why they should be reelected.”

“Is the incumbency so great they don’t have to come back and be accountable to the community?” added co-host George B. Alexander, “that they don’t have to answer to the public?”

Alexlander also questioned whether or not we should have

term limits. It was pointed out that an example of the downside of no term limits was the over 30 years that Fillmore Council Member David Franczyk has been in office, and the lack of progress in that district.

Among the political hopefuls who did show up was Duncan Kirkwood who is running for the 2nd Legislative District seat; Veronica Golden and Jennifer Strickland, who are candidates for the Masten District Seat; DeShaun Hall who is running for the Fillmore District Seat; Vanessa Glushefski and Barbara Miller Williams who are running for Comptroller; Lenora Foote-Beavers who is running for City Court Judge. Candidates running for School Bard reelection included two incumbents, Ferry district candidates Sharon Belton-Cottman and Central District representative Paulette Woods. Candidates who are running for School Board also include At-Large candidates Larry Scott, Desmond Nalls, Dr. Ann Rivera and Terrance Heard The station received praise for taking the initiative to host the forum in an effort to educate voters on issues and candidates running in the School Board election May 7th and the Primary Election June 25th.

Majority Leader Baskin Reviews the Legislature’s Major Accomplishments from 2018 Milestones achieved in Anti-Discrimination Laws, Health and Ethics Legislation and Criminal Justice reform Erie County, NY - County Legislator April Baskin, elected Majority Leader in her first term, has had 14 months of accomplishments, racking up five local laws in addition to ensuring that parks, libraries and community organizations received the funding they deserve, and has worked hard to earn the Legislature’s backing for change in our local criminal justice system.

Baskin, chosen by members of the Legislature’s Democratic majority in both 2018 and 2019 as their caucus leader, described the adopted legislation as “having substantial impact on the lives of Erie County residents and govern-ment operations.”

The new local laws include the 2018 Fair Housing Law, “one of the toughest in the nation,” Baskin noted, “that surpasses State protections by shielding source of income, family status and gender identity from landlord discrimination.” The revised county Apprentice Law, “will ensure more opportunities for residents to be included in the trade workforce. Contractors with the county who train apprentices in specific trades through mandatory training programs must now demonstrate a graduation rate of 30% or higher to maintain their contracts.”

Additionally, under Baskin’s leadership, the Democrats delivered a Public Health Law protecting residents from the dangers of second-hand smoke, and a Conversion Therapy Ban to stop the discredited practice of so-called “sexual identity therapy” that targets minors.

“We also adopted a tough new Ethics Law to hold local elected officials accountable,” said Baskin. “There must be transparent accounting of finances and conflicts of interest, and there will be strict new fines for any violations. “

Baskin points to her sponsorship of the local bail reform campaign that has earned the support of elected officials and community leaders, including NFL Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas. “We are now the only county in New York that has taken an official legislative stance on eliminating cash bail for minor offenses. But that is just the begin-ning of scrutiny on local criminal justice. Working with the community and prisoners’ rights activists, we created enough pressure for the NYS Attorney General to open an investigation into the homicide of former detainee India Cummings. And by working with the Buffalo School Board and the Erie County Department of Social Services, I was able to propose the now-adopted policy that eliminates the shackling of youth during Family Court proceedings.”

Fourteen months ago, I was new, but my fellow Legislators took a leap of faith and trusted me with the leadership position that is responsible for turning proposals into actions,” said Legislator Baskin. “Getting it done for the people is my commitment. Working with my colleagues, building relationships with the Legislature’s Chair and Minority Leader, and ensuring that community groups are heard and supported is all part of the job. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished so far, but it’s only the beginning; I’m always looking forward to what can be accomplished next.”

In addition to her role as Majority Leader, Baskin serves as Chair of the Legislature’s Public Safety Committee and serves on the Minority and Women Business Enterprise, Economic Development, and Energy & Environment committees.

Maureen Bartley More than Deserving of Citizen of the Month Honor

Dear Editor, It was great to see Maureen Bartley (owner and operator of Maureen’s Wholesale Flower Market, 441 Ellicott St. Buffalo ) honored as Citizen of the Month by Erie County Legislator Barbara Miller Williams (Cvhallenger 2/6/19).

For 5 years Maureen has donated an array of beautiful flowers to the annual Juneteenth Festival’s MAAFA Memorial Ceremony.

The Ceremony takes place on the Summer Solstice day June 21. We gather at the historic Underground Railroad River Crossing at Broderick Park to acknowledge and never forget the evil wicked heinous crime against humanity of the barbaric enslavement of African people.

Don’t Forget About Nate Boyd’s Advocacy For a long time community activist Nate Boyd has been relentlessly advocating for the rights of BMHA tenants whose voices no one else seemed to hear. Those in high places tended to write him off but he continued to bring the issues to light, particularly in the Kenfield Langfield and Commodore Perry. Nate did an amazing job of uncovering some of the nightmerish conditions poor folks had to live and suffer under. This past summer Mayor brown assured in an interview on WBEN that “change is happening every single day” to resolve many of those issues. But apparently every single day was not fast enough. Last week it was reported that a review by HUD placed BMHA among the nation’s worst public housing agencies in the nation and threatened to place it under a federal receiver. Whatever good comes out of all this for the people who live in BMHA housing, we can’t forget the role that Nate Boyd’s advocacy has played. He deserves tremendous credit for keeping the plight of the poor on the front burner.

Thankfully, it appears his work will not be in vain.

BLACK WOMEN RUNNING continued Also currently circulating petitions to run for the School Board : •Patricia Elliott-Patton who is running for East District seat; •Carolette Meadows running for Board Member at Large Last year a report released by the Erie County Commission on the Status of Women. Noted that fewer women were holding positions in Buffalo and Erie county government than before.

Most striking was the fact that there were no women holding elected political office in the City of Buffalo. The Common Council is currently made up of men only and the Democratic Party has endorsed all of the incumbents seeking re-election.

This annual event is called the NFL Combine which these super athletic mortals participate in multiple drills and tasks to show off their worth to the 32 NFL teams that await to obtain their special skillsets in this upcoming 2019 NFL Draft.

In every event, there will be people who stand out more than others and in this Rise Up Right article we will highlight the Top 2 performers from the NFL Combine.

1. D.K. Melcalf, who is a 6' 3 228 pound wideout from Ole Miss shocked the system as he ran a 4.33 40 in which could cement him as a #1 receiver. Melcalf in the NFL Combine showed that he is stronger than Khalil Mack in the bench press, faster than Brandin Cooks from the Rams, and can jump higher than Atlanta Falcons star wideout Julio Jones. Rumors are swirling swiftly over the sports world that the Buffalo Bills are looking to get D.K. with the #9 overall pick in this draft. He would be a sure fire target for Josh Allen who was obtained by the Bills with the 7th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Allen to Melcalf may have a beautiful ring to it if he is sought out for Bills fans aboard.

2. Montez Sweat, this 6'6 260 lb. defensive lineman made his mark on NFL Combine history by being the 1st defensive lineman to run a 4.41 40. He also had these marks: Bench 21 reps 40 4.41 secs Vert jump 36" Broad jump 125" 3 cone drill 7.0 secs 20 yrd. shuttle 4.29 secs But did not participate in 60 yrd. shuttle.

Montez Sweat could very well be a first round pick-up for any team who needs a push rusher and a speedy interior nightmare against the run.

Teams like Oakland, Arizona, NY Jets, NY Giants, Detroit, Atlanta, and even New England may want to put Sweat on their radars.
