Finding Families for Waiting Kids.

In response to Governor Cuomo’s NYS PAUSE executive order, all City of Rochester playgrounds, outdoor fitness equipment and athletic fields, including basketball and tennis courts, are closed until further notice. The coronavirus that causes COVID-19 can live on the hard surfaces (plastic and steel) of the city’s playground and fitness equipment for up to 72 hours according to recent studies. In addition, the close contact involved in pickup sports violates the advice of medical professionals, including the County Public Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Mendoza. There has been significant use of the City’s playground and fitness equipment, as well as, athletic facilities despite the executive order regarding social distancing.

2020 Outdoor Celebration Cancelled

After considering the effects Covid-19 is having on our nation, and specifically, on our community, in order to support the health and safety of our festival’s participants and attendees, the Juneteenth Festival of Buffalo’s Board of Directors has decided to cancel the 2020 outdoor celebration. Currently registered and prospective vendors, food service providers, parade participants, and Juneteenth Festival’s supportive community, please continue to follow us, for updates, on Facebook (Juneteenth Festival of Buffalo); our website @ juneteenthofbuffalo. com.; and in the Challenger.

Like almost every difficult decision being made, in this season, this is indeed unprecedented, as the Festival has been a staple of Buffalo’s Black community for 44 consecutive years, occurring on the first “-teens” weekend of June.

Other events that are affected by our decision include Sankofa Days, the Maafa, and Git on Da Bus; all of which are also cancelled.

Although we have no idea what our tomorrow holds, we will continue to operate with the belief that there will be ‘tomorrow,’ and continue to plan for a 2021 festival. Please, if you pray, pray for us all, and stay healthy, safe, and through it all, show love.

By Staff Reporter here are positive signs throughout the African American community that residents are taking the coronavirus seriously. Folks are wearing their masks, their gloves and practicing social distancing and other guidelines to reduce its spread.

However recent reports that COVID-19 affects African Americans disproportionately around the country is alarming. Buffalo apparently is no exception.

It’s been confirmed that the 2015 and 2011 zip codes now have highest COVID-19 rates In the City of Buffalo.

Mrs. Toni Vazquez of G-Health Enterprises, offered a novel way to take the battle to another level during last Saturday’s “Buffalo On fire” community talk show on WUFO 96.5FM radio. “ Let’s infect people with knowledge" she declared, “.…with words, texts phone calls or instagram or whatever medium young people (especially) are using these days. Let me infect 3 people with my knowledge who are out there in the streets doing things they should not be doing … interacting the way they should not be interacting out of ignorance because they just don’t know that they are ultimately killing their brother or sistrer … unknowingly killing their grandmother or grandfather…let us infect people with knowledge!”

“Black and brown people live and breathe and understand thru testimony,” she continued. “When I tell my daughter’s story – they get it - when Raul tells the story they get it – and there’s a happy ending because Nadia is still with us, but there are a ton of people who are not…young people, old people, all walks of life are losing their lives because of this disease.”

Toni Vazquez is the wife of Raul Vazquez, M.D., founder of G-Enterprises. Their daughter Nadia tested positive for COVID-19.

“We also have to take hold of our own health….” she encouraged. “We have to do better to live longer. We have to do what we can right now AND NOT WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO DO IT FOR US !”

“My job today is to infect 3 people with some knowledge , and for them to go out and infect 3 other people with knowledge - and tell them that this is real and we don’t want it to be any more detrimental to our community than it has already been!”

-Legislative ActionOn Tuesday April N.M. Baskin, Chairwoman, Erie County Legislator District 2, made public several information slides that will appear on her social media. They are COVID-19 facts specific to the Black community that note all facts and phone numbers to help the public get through this crisis.

“As of Sunday, six out of 27 COVID-19 deaths in Erie County were Black residents. This equates to 22% of the deaths. Erie County’s population is 14% African American," stated Legislator Basin. “As the Erie County Legislator representing zip codes 14215 and 14211, which are two of the hardest-hit COVID-19 zip codes in Buffalo and our county, I have made it my top priority to address the positive cases in these zip codes."

She continued: “At the same time, we have to admit a harsh reality. The factors which determine one’s ability to survive this disease are the same factors we know disproportionately affect our poor, inner city communities of color. 14215 is the tenth-poorest zip code in Erie County. The East Side suffers chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease at higher rates than other areas of the city. Given that 37% of Buffalo residents are African-Americans, we are at a greater risk during this pandemic, especially those persons who are on dialysis.

Therefore, the death rates from COVID-19 are likely to be higher here than in the rest of the county."

Chairwoman Baskin pointed out that in addition, given the poverty rate of 14215, residents who have illnesses due to a lack of health care options are more likely to be hospital-

April is Minority Cancer Awareness Month Part 1 Every April, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center works to raise awareness about cancer among minority populations by recognizing Minority Cancer Awareness Month.

While we make progress every year in reducing deaths from cancer, the disease continues to be a bigger burden to minority and underserved populations. In general, minority groups in the United States are more likely to die from certain cancers than the general population, a difference known as a cancer health disparity. Scientists at Roswell Park study cancer health disparities, and while they don’t have all the answers, some causes include genetics and a lack of access to cancer screening and timely treatment services.

Here's what you should know about the four most common cancers among people of color, and what you can do to prevent them.

Breast Cancer: According to the American Cancer Society, over 33,000 African American and 24,000 Hispanic/Latino women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019. Breast cancer is projected to be the leading cause of cancer death in Hispanic women (3,200) this year, and more than 6,000 African American women will die from breast cancer in 2020.

Obesity is a major risk factor for breast cancer, and a 2016 Roswell Park-led study found that physical activity may reduce breast cancer risk for African-American women. The study found that two or more hours of weekly, vigorous exercise — such as running, walking/ climbing briskly up a hill, fast cycling, and participation in sports — was associated with a decreased breast cancer risk of up to 12%.

Women of childbearing age can reduce their breast cancer risk by breastfeeding. This is especially important for women of color, as studies show breastfeeding protects against triplenegative breast cancer. This is a more aggressive kind of breast cancer that is more common in African-American women.

Gov. Cuomo is extending the NYS PAUSE ORDER until April 29 ordering non-essential businesses and schools across New York to remain closed through the end of the month.

he Lord gave Pastor Kerr a vision that his Genesee Street building should not only be used as a church, but also to be used for community service. The occupancy above the church became a non-profit emergency homeless shelter, founded by Pastor Kerr, called My Place Home for Women and Children, which was founded in 2008.

Pastor Kerr's vision in My Place Home, provides the homeless women and children of Western New York, and Eric County with a safe and secure environment. My Place Home offers families the immediate necessities such as clothing, shoes, personal hygiene products, and three meals a day. The shelter houses 72 women and children. The vision has continued to grow and now a rapid housing component has been added. The purpose of rapid re-housing is to provide the homeless families with permanent and stable housing after a placement in emergency and temporary shelter has occurred.

My Place Home is a non-profit organization which employs over 20 employees in ministering to this vulnerable population. The Lord's will is being followed and with every step we make, we shall strive to bring more souls into the Kingdom of God. Pastor Kerr also has three churches under his leadership in the City of Buffalo; 11 churches in the Dominican Republic, and Congo as well. Pastor Kerr has built two schools in North and South Kivu, City Goma Town Congo called Temple School Complex and one school is being built in Montserrado County Liberia, Africa called District Reginald E. Kerr Christian Academy.

Rev J.C. Ballard Makes His Transition

Long-time barber and pastor J.C. Ballard died March 2 at the age of 91. Rev. Ballard was the founder and pastor of Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church and continued preaching until his passing. He opened JC’s Barber Shop in 1958.

Pastor Who Called Coronavirus ‘Hysteria’ Dies Of COVID-19 Virginia Pastor Landon Spradlin who made waves after downplaying the severity of COVID-19 and suggested that the virus was being used as a political tool and overexaggerated in an attempt to smear President Donald Trump, passed away last month from the very same virus.

WUFO’s “Talk Show Saturdays” Provide Important Voice During COVID-19 Crisis “Talk Show Saturdays” on WUFO Power 96.5 Radio has proven itself to be an important source of information for Buffalo’s Black community during the COVID-19 Crisis. The March 28th broadcasts were a good example.

-Bethesda World HarvestPastor Michael A. Badger presented a guest who worked as a professional cleaner specializing in anti-viral and anti-bacterial cleaning. In addition, the

show featured a regular guest Dr. Frances Ilozue, MD who stressed the importance of social distancing, the washing of hands and staying in touch with one’s primary physician at the first sign of feeling ill or exhibiting any of the signs of possible COVID-19 (cough fever, tiredness, difficulty breathing). She had praise for first responders, especially the doctors and nurses in the hospitals and assured that their health and safety

are a priority.

Rev. Badger ended the show on a political note: “We need a mature leader at this point we don’t need a politician trying to re-run for office,” he said referring to President Trump.

Co-host, Elder Jennifer Strickland, who is also a teacher and writer, pointed out the positives about home schooling across the city as a result of the school closings in the wake of the coronavirus health crisis. “We have to find the positive in all things that appear to be negative,” she said, adding that she was “thankful children are spending time at home with parents” and vice versa. She encouraged parents to “hang in there.” The crisis, she assured, is “introducing a whole new way of educating our children .”

“The best thing we can say is STAY HOME. It’s a God thing,” said host Pastor Janice Fisher. “Everything’s been out of order but now God is getting things in order….”

In addition to Elder Strickland, Elder Sister Alethea Davis is also a co-host.

-Buffalo On FireBuffalo On Fire, which airs at 10 a.m. is co-hosted

by Attorney Anthony Pendergrass and Rev. Kenzir M. Pointer. Their topic was also the coronavirus and its impact on the community. Pastor George Nicholas, MDiv, Senior Pastor, Lincoln Memorial United Methodist and co-convener of The African American Health Equity Task Force, called in and sounded the alarm.

When people hear the term “at risk” populations, said Pastor Nicholas, they normally think of the elderly.

“However the CDC points out that heart disease, lung disease, asthma , diabetes, a compromised immune systems from having cancer, and obesity are risk factors as well,” he said.

In Western New York African Americans are more

likely than Whites to suffer these illnesses.

“When you have a culture that discounts or diminishes the humanity of one entire community based on their race or ethnicity – the bi-product of it are these health disparities," said Rev. Nicholas.

The Health Equity Task Force all but predicted the recent increase of Black COVID-19 cases and deaths locally.

Legislators Baskin, Johnson Report to Community on COVID-19

T

he 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is a virus that causes respiratory illness in people and can spread from person-to-person. It is more contagious than the flu. There is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19. We all have an important role to play in stopping the spread and saving lives.

Given that Buffalo is the largest municipality, the largest numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases are residents of Buffalo. Residents in zip code 14215 have the highest number of positive cases so far. The large number of cases may be attributed, in part, to the high numbers of first responders, nurses, and home health aides who live in this area. We will continue to demand the bulk of Erie County’s resources go where they are truly needed – in Buffalo.

The members of the Erie County Legislature, our staff and our colleagues in county government are working together in coordination with other leaders to promote public safety.

As representatives of Erie County Legislature Districts 1 (Howard Johnson) and District 2 (April Baskin) we strongly oppose Governor Cuomo’s order requiring 20% of our local ventilators to be moved downstate. Cases of COVID-19 are increasing daily in our region and these life-saving devices must be available to local residents who need them. New York State is facing a shortage of ventilators because of mismanagement at the federal level. The Trump administration has left states to fend for themselves and placed them in competition with other states for these life-saving resources. We are calling on President Donald Trump to develop a plan to provide New York with the equipment and the supplies necessary to combat this pandemic.

In March, the Legislature proactively approved spending $5 million to respond to COVID-19. The money will be used to buy and acquire tests, testing agents, personal protective equipment (PPE) and other needs. Congress also recently passed an economic recovery package which will allow Erie County to be reimbursed for the costs associated with combating this emergency up to $159 Legislators April million.

Baskin and Regrettably, testing supplies are in short demand worldwide. County officials Howard and are working diligently with state and federal officials to obtain more tests. After Johnson. discovering that Kaleida Health had test swabs and the County had the testing chemicals, the County has partnered with Kaleida to increase testing capacity.

Due to the shortage of tests, they are being prioritized for individuals who are hospitalized and for healthcare employees. Maintaining the health of our local first responders and essential workers is imperative. We are in constant communication with the Poloncarz administration regarding Erie County’s response to this epidemic, including its effect on Buffalo’s East Side communities.

Once the county obtains more tests, they will begin testing persons with underlying health conditions that make them vulnerable. From the 1932 ‘Tuskegee Experiment’ to the chronic lack of preventive healthcare and healthy foods in urban neighborhoods, people of color and low incomes

have long borne the brunt of abuse and neglect. Our community suffers chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease at higher rates than our white counterparts. Therefore, our legislative districts could be subject to higher rates of COVID-19 exposure than the rest of the county.

Recently, Legislator Johnson submitted a letter to Erie County District Attorney John Flynn and the Supervising Judge of the Eighth Judicial District asking them to recommend or agree to the release of non-dangerous prisoners from the custody of the Erie County Sheriff in order to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

We support the efforts of Citizen Action, Partnership for the Public Good, PUSH Buffalo and Showing Up For Racial Justice who have called for the release of non-violent prisoners in the county jails to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. As of two weeks ago, the Holding Center was at 47% of its capacity and the Correctional Facility was at 39% of capacity, due in part to bail reform, and in part due to efforts to decrease the population to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

We are in communication with the Superintendent of Jail Management and his medical staff and they have assured us there are no COVID-19 cases among prisoners. Any symptomatic prisoners are being quarantined from the general population and monitored. We are also asking that individuals who lack housing be connected with the county facilities set up for temporary shelter at SUNY Erie's Flickinger Center at the City Campus.

COVID-19 symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure. The most common symptoms are fever, cough and shortness of breath. Please consult your medical provider for any symptoms that concern you. Do not leave your home, except to get medical care.

Crisis Within A Crisis: More Black Peope Are Getting and Dying from COVID -19

S

urgeon General Jerome Adams told CBS News that African-Americans are at higher risk of contracting COVID-19.

However as of Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's information site did not include a racial breakdown. A coalition of congressional lawmakers has asked the CDC to make racial data on coronavirus testing, cases, hospitalizations and fatalities publicly available.

After agreeing that the CDC and the federal government should be tracking the impact of the coronavirus within different demographic groups, Adams said that his office had been discussing health equity prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

“But my office, long before COVID-19, has been talking about health equity, has been talking about the need to help people understand when they’re at risk and to actually intervene,” Adams said.

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams According to US News & World Report, in both Louisiana and Chicago, for example, recent statistics showed that roughly 70% of COVID-19 deaths occurred among Backs, even though they are a minority in both areas.

In North Carolina's Mecklenburg County – home of Charlotte, the state's largest city – Black people make up 32.9% of residents, but accounted for 43.7% of reported coronavirus cases as of April 4. In Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, Blacks make up about 27% percent of the population but comprised almost half of all COVID-19 infections – and, as of data early Tuesday afternoon, 71% of all fatalities.

Next door in Michigan, state health officials report that 33% of COVID-19 cases have occurred among African Americans – 10 percentage points higher than Whites, and more than twice the state's percentage of Black residents. African Americans also accounted for 41% of deaths, compared with 28% among Whites and 26% of cases for which race wasn't known.

Some experts were appalled but not surprised by the grim data, and anticipate the disparities will get worse as the pandemic grinds on.

At the same time, doe experts say they "don't know for sure" the true extent of illness and death disparities between Blacks and W hites because many states and cities have lagged on including race when compiling and releasing data on the coronavirus pandemic.

Experts have warned that long-standing health disparities between racial groups in the U.S. – such as higher rates of conditions like asthma, obesity and diabetes, along with lower access to health care among Blacks compared with Whites – place some African Americans directly in the virus' sights, leaving them at risk of contracting a serious case of COVID-19.

Surgeon General Adams added he has personally shared having high blood pressure, heart disease, asthma and being pre-diabetic.

“So I represent that legacy of growing up poor and Black in America, and I and many Black Americans are at higher risk for COVID,” Adams said. “It’s why we need everyone to do their part to slow the spread.”

Meanwhile, hidden biases White doctors have toward Black patients, and Black Americans' historical mistrust of the medical system, could exacerbate the situation, speeding the spread of the virus in struggling communities. Many Black Americans also hold low-wage jobs in which it may not be possible to work from home, potentially increasing their chances of infection.

And as bad as the news is for African Americans, experts say this may be just the end of the beginning. Southern states that have turned their backs on the Affordable Care Act, likely represent the next surge of new COVID-19 cases among Blacks and Latinos.

The high death totals among African Americans send a clear signal that the health care system must be overhauled and recalibrated to reduce disparities that the coronavirus pandemic has revealed.
